Biodegradable polyphosphoester micelles act as both background-free 31P magnetic resonance imaging agents and drug nanocarriers

In vivo monitoring of polymers is crucial for drug delivery and tissue regeneration. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a whole-body imaging technique, and heteronuclear MRI allows quantitative imaging. However, MRI agents can result in environmental pollution and organ accumulation. To address this, we introduce biocompatible and biodegradable polyphosphoesters, as MRI-traceable polymers using the ³¹P centers in the polymer backbone. We overcome challenges in ³¹P MRI, including background interference and low sensitivity, by modifying the molecular environment of ³¹P, assembling polymers into colloids, and tailoring the polymers' microstructure to adjust MRI-relaxation times. Specifically, gradient-type polyphosphonate-copolymers demonstrate improved MRI-relaxation times compared to homo- and block copolymers, making them suitable for imaging. We validate background-free imaging and biodegradation in vivo using Manduca sexta. Furthermore, encapsulating the potent drug PROTAC allows using these amphiphilic copolymers to simultaneously deliver drugs, enabling theranostics. This first report paves the way for polyphosphoesters as background-free MRI-traceable polymers for theranostic applications.

TAFPred: Torsion Angle Fluctuations Prediction from Protein Sequences

Protein molecules show varying degrees of flexibility throughout their three-dimensional structures. The flexibility is determined by the fluctuations in torsion angles, specifically phi (φ) and psi (ψ), which define the protein backbone. These angle fluctuations are derived from variations in backbone torsion angles observed in different models. By analyzing the fluctuations in Cartesian coordinate space, we can understand the structural flexibility of proteins. Predicting torsion angle fluctuations is valuable for determining protein function and structure when these angles act as constraints. In this study, a machine learning method called TAFPred is developed to predict torsion angle fluctuations using protein sequences directly. The method incorporates various features, such as disorder probability, position-specific scoring matrix profiles, secondary structure probabilities, and more. TAFPred, employing an optimized Light Gradient Boosting Machine Regressor (LightGBM), achieved high accuracy with correlation coefficients of 0.746 and 0.737 and mean absolute errors of 0.114 and 0.123 for the φ and ψ angles, respectively. Compared to the state-of-the-art method, TAFPred demonstrated significant improvements of 10.08% in MAE and 24.83% in PCC for the phi angle and 9.93% in MAE, and 22.37% in PCC for the psi angle.

Conversion-Type Cathode Materials for Aqueous Zn Metal Batteries in Nonalkaline Aqueous Electrolytes: Progress, Challenges, and Solutions

Aqueous Zn metal batteries are attractive as safe and low-cost energy storage systems. At present, due to the narrow window of the aqueous electrolyte and the strong reliance of the Zn2+ ion intercalated reaction on the host structure, the current intercalated cathode materials exhibit restricted energy densities. In contrast, cathode materials with conversion reactions can promise higher energy densities. Especially, the recently reported conversion-type cathode materials that function in nonalkaline electrolytes have garnered increasing attention. This is because the use of nonalkaline electrolytes can prevent the occurrence of side reactions encountered in alkaline electrolytes and thereby enhance cycling stability. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review on the reaction mechanisms, progress, challenges, and solutions to these cathode materials. In this review, four kinds of conversion-type cathode materials including MnO2 , halogen materials (Br2 and I2 ), chalcogenide materials (O2 , S, Se, and Te), and Cu-based compounds (CuI, Cu2 O, Cu2 S, CuO, CuS, and CuSe) are reviewed. First, the reaction mechanisms and battery structures of these materials are introduced. Second, the fundamental problems and their corresponding solutions are discussed in detail in each material. Finally, future directions and efforts for the development of conversion-type cathode materials for aqueous Zn batteries are proposed.

MAO- and Borate-Free Activating Supports for Group 4 Metallocene and Post-Metallocene Catalysts of α-Olefin Polymerization and Oligomerization

Modern industry of advanced polyolefins extensively uses Group 4 metallocene and post-metallocene catalysts. High-throughput polyolefin technologies demand the use of heterogeneous catalysts with a given particle size and morphology, high thermal stability, and controlled productivity. Conventional Group 4 metal single-site heterogeneous catalysts require the use of high-cost methylalumoxane (MAO) or perfluoroaryl borate activators. However, a number of inorganic phases, containing highly acidic Lewis and Brønsted sites, are able to activate Group 4 metal pre-catalysts using low-cost and affordable alkylaluminums. In the present review, we gathered comprehensive information on MAO- and borate-free activating supports of different types and discussed the surface nature and chemistry of these phases, examples of their use in the polymerization of ethylene and α-olefins, and prospects of the further development for applications in the polyolefin industry.

Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy Definition of Peroxy Intermediates in Catechol Dioxygenases: Factors that Determine Extra- versus Intradiol Cleavage

The extradiol dioxygenases (EDOs) and intradiol dioxygenases (IDOs) are nonheme iron enzymes that catalyze the oxidative aromatic ring cleavage of catechol substrates, playing an essential role in the carbon cycle. The EDOs and IDOs utilize very different FeII and FeIII active sites to catalyze the regiospecificity in their catechol ring cleavage products. The factors governing this difference in cleavage have remained undefined. The EDO homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (HPCD) and IDO protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (PCD) provide an opportunity to understand this selectivity, as key O2 intermediates have been trapped for both enzymes. Nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (in conjunction with density functional theory calculations) is used to define the geometric and electronic structures of these intermediates as FeII-alkylhydroperoxo (HPCD) and FeIII-alkylperoxo (PCD) species. Critically, in both intermediates, the initial peroxo bond orientation is directed toward extradiol product formation. Reaction coordinate calculations were thus performed to evaluate both the extra- and intradiol O-O cleavage for the simple organic alkylhydroperoxo and for the FeII and FeIII metal catalyzed reactions. These results show the FeII-alkylhydroperoxo (EDO) intermediate undergoes facile extradiol O-O bond homolysis due to its extra e-, while for the FeIII-alkylperoxo (IDO) intermediate the extradiol cleavage involves a large barrier and would yield the incorrect extradiol product. This prompted our evaluation of a viable mechanism to rearrange the FeIII-alkylperoxo IDO intermediate for intradiol cleavage, revealing a key role in the rebinding of the displaced Tyr447 ligand in this rearrangement, driven by the proton delivery necessary for O-O bond cleavage.

MoS2 Photoelectrodes for Hydrogen Production: Tuning the S-Vacancy Content in Highly Homogeneous Ultrathin Nanocrystals

Tuning the electrocatalytic properties of MoS2 layers can be achieved through different paths, such as reducing their thickness, creating edges in the MoS2 flakes, and introducing S-vacancies. We combine these three approaches by growing MoS2 electrodes by using a special salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. This procedure allows the growth of ultrathin MoS2 nanocrystals (1-3 layers thick and a few nanometers wide), as evidenced by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. This morphology of the MoS2 layers at the nanoscale induces some specific features in the Raman and photoluminescence spectra compared to exfoliated or microcrystalline MoS2 layers. Moreover, the S-vacancy content in the layers can be tuned during CVD growth by using Ar/H2 mixtures as a carrier gas. Detailed optical microtransmittance and microreflectance spectroscopies, micro-Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements with sub-millimeter spatial resolution show that the obtained samples present an excellent homogeneity over areas in the cm2 range. The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of these MoS2 layers were investigated using electrodes with relatively large areas (0.8 cm2). The prepared MoS2 cathodes show outstanding Faradaic efficiencies as well as long-term stability in acidic solutions. In addition, we demonstrate that there is an optimal number of S-vacancies to improve the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical performances of MoS2.

Design, characterization and applications of nanocolloidal hydrogels

Nanocolloidal gels (NCGs) are an emerging class of soft matter, in which nanoparticles act as building blocks of the colloidal network. Chemical or physical crosslinking enables NCG synthesis and assembly from a broad range of nanoparticles, polymers, and low-molecular weight molecules. The synergistic properties of NCGs are governed by nanoparticle composition, dimensions and shape, the mechanism of nanoparticle bonding, and the NCG architecture, as well as the nature of molecular crosslinkers. Nanocolloidal gels find applications in soft robotics, bioengineering, optically active coatings and sensors, optoelectronic devices, and absorbents. This review summarizes currently scattered aspects of NCG formation, properties, characterization, and applications. We describe the diversity of NCG building blocks, discuss the mechanisms of NCG formation, review characterization techniques, outline NCG fabrication and processing methods, and highlight most common NCG applications. The review is concluded with the discussion of perspectives in the design and development of NCGs.

Manipulating Peierls Distortion in van der Waals NbOX2 Maximizes Second-Harmonic Generation

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials, featuring relaxed phase-matching conditions and highly tunable optical nonlinearity, endow them with potential applications in nanoscale nonlinear optical (NLO) devices. Despite significant progress, fundamental questions in 2D NLO materials remain, such as how structural distortion affects second-order NLO properties, which call for advanced regulation and in situ diagnostic tools. Here, by applying pressure to continuously tune the displacement of Nb atoms in 2D vdW NbOI₂, we effectively modulate the polarization and achieve a 3-fold boost of the second-harmonic generation (SHG) at 2.5 GPa. By introducing a Peierls distortion parameter, λ, we establish a quantitative relationship between λ and SHG intensity. Importantly, we further demonstrate that the SHG enhancement can be achieved under ambient conditions by anionic substitution to tune the distortion in NbO(I_1-xBr_x)₂ (x = 0-1) compounds, where the chemical tailoring simulates the pressure effects on the structural optimization. Consequently, NbO(I_0.60Br_0.40)₂ with λ = 0.17 exhibits a giant SHG of over 2 orders of magnitude higher than that in monolayer WSe₂, reaching the record-high value among reported 2D vdW NLO materials. This work unambiguously demonstrates the correlation between Peierls distortion and SHG property and, more broadly, opens new paths for the development of advanced NLO materials by manipulating the structure distortions.

Reversible Modulation of the Electronic and Spatial Environment around Ni(0) Centers Bearing Multifunctional Carbene Ligands with Triarylaluminum

Designing and modulating the electronic and spatial environments surrounding metal centers is a crucial issue in a wide range of chemistry fields that use organometallic compounds. Herein, we demonstrate a Lewis-acid-mediated reversible expansion, contraction, and transformation of the spatial environment surrounding nickel(0) centers that bear N-phosphine oxide-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes (henceforth referred to as (S)PoxIms). Reaction between tetrahedral (syn-κ-C,O-(S)PoxIm)Ni(CO)₂ and Al(C₆F₅)₃ smoothly afforded heterobimetallic Ni/Al species such as trigonal-planar {κ-C-Ni(CO)₂}(μ-anti-(S)PoxIm){κ-O-Al(C₆F₅)₃} via a complexation-induced rotation of the N-phosphine oxide moieties, while the addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine resulted in the quantitative regeneration of the former Ni complexes. The corresponding interconversion also occurred between (SPoxIm)Ni(η²:η²-diphenyldivinylsilane) and {κ-C-Ni(η²:η²-diene)}(μ-anti-SPoxIm){κ-O-Al(C₆F₅)₃} via the coordination and dissociation of Al(C₆F₅)₃. The shape and size of the space around the Ni(0) center was drastically changed through this Lewis-acid-mediated interconversion. Moreover, the multinuclear NMR, IR, and XAS analyses of the aforementioned carbonyl complexes clarified the details of the changes in the electronic states on the Ni centers; i.e., the electron delocalization was effectively enhanced among the Ni atom and CO ligands in the heterobimetallic Ni/Al species. The results presented in this work thus provide a strategy for reversibly modulating both the electronic and spatial environment of organometallic complexes, in addition to the well-accepted Lewis-base-mediated ligand-substitution methods.

Optical Control of G-Actin with a Photoswitchable Latrunculin

Actin is one of the most abundant proteins in eukaryotic cells and a key component of the cytoskeleton. A range of small molecules have emerged that interfere with actin dynamics by either binding to polymeric F-actin or monomeric G-actin to stabilize or destabilize filaments or prevent their formation and growth, respectively. Amongst these, the latrunculins, which bind to G-actin and affect polymerization, are widely used as tools to investigate actin-dependent cellular processes. Here, we report a photoswitchable version of latrunculin, termed opto-latrunculin (OptoLat), which binds to G-actin in a light-dependent fashion and affords optical control over actin polymerization. OptoLat can be activated with 390 - 490 nm pulsed light and rapidly relaxes to the inactive form in the dark. Light activated OptoLat induced depolymerization of F-actin networks in oligodendrocytes and budding yeast, as shown by fluorescence microscopy. Subcellular control of actin dynamics in human cancer cell lines was demonstrated by live cell imaging. Light-activated OptoLat also reduced microglia surveillance in organotypic mouse brain slices while ramification was not affected. Incubation in the dark did not alter the structural and functional integrity of microglia. Together, our data demonstrate that OptoLat is a useful tool for the elucidation of G-actin dependent dynamic processes in cells and tissues.

Carbon-Free Conversion of SiO2 to Si via Ultra-Rapid Alloy Formation: Toward the Sustainable Fabrication of Nanoporous Si for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon has the potential to improve lithium-ion battery (LIB) performance substantially by replacing graphite as an anode. The sustainability of such a transformation, however, depends on the source of silicon and the nature of the manufacturing process. Today's silicon industry still overwhelmingly depends on the energy-intensive, high-temperature carbothermal reduction of silica─a process that adversely impacts the environment. Rather than use conventional thermoreduction alone to break Si-O bonds, we report the efficient conversion of SiO₂ directly to Mg₂Si by a microwave-induced Mg plasma within 2.5 min at merely 200 W under vacuum. The underlying mechanism is proposed, wherein electrons with enhanced kinetics function readily as the reductant while the "bombardment" from Mg cations and electrons promotes the fast nucleation of Mg₂Si. The 3D nanoporous (NP) Si is then fabricated by a facile thermal dealloying step. The resulting hierarchical NP Si anodes deliver stable, extended cycling with excellent rate capability in Li-ion half-cells, with capacities several times greater than graphite. The microwave-induced metal plasma (MIMP) concept can be applied just as efficiently to the synthesis of Mg₂Si from Si, and the chemistry should be extendable to the reduction of multiple metal(loid) oxides via their respective Mg alloys.

Droplet-Driven Self-Propelled Devices Fabricated by a Femtosecond Laser

Self-propelled autonomous devices have broad application prospects in energy conservation, environmental protection, and biomedical engineering. Nevertheless, the driving force always consumes external energy or special chemicals. Here, a novel and green droplet-driven device (DDD) consisting of superhydrophilic triangles on a superhydrophobic plate is processed only by a femtosecond laser. The water droplet flows into water along the superhydrophilic channel and forms a jet to provide driving force for the DDD, whose strength can be manipulated by changing the point angle of the triangle and the volume of the droplet. By fabricating multiple or special channels, the DDD can translate and rotate along the designed track and even carry objects. This provides a new route for the fabrication of green self-propelled autonomous devices and their applications in the fields of intelligent systems and environmental protection.

Nanoelectrochemistry in electrochemical phase transition reactions

Electrochemical phase transition is important in a range of processes, including gas generation in fuel cells and electrolyzers, as well as in electrodeposition in battery and metal production. Nucleation is the first step in these phase transition reactions. A deep understanding of the kinetics, and mechanism of the nucleation and the structure of the nuclei and nucleation sites is fundamentally important. In this perspective, theories and methods for studying electrochemical nucleation are briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on nanoelectrochemistry and single-entity electrochemistry approaches. Perspectives on open questions and potential future approaches are also discussed.

Light-controlled enzymatic synthesis of γ-CD using a recyclable azobenzene template

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are important molecular hosts for hydrophobic guests in water and extensively employed in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries to encapsulate drugs, flavours and aromas. Compared with α- and β-CD, the wide-scale use of γ-CD is currently limited due to costly production processes. We show how the yield of γ-CD in the enzymatic synthesis of CDs can be increased 5-fold by adding a tetra-ortho-isopropoxy-substituted azobenzene template irradiated at 625 nm (to obtain the cis-(Z)-isomer) to direct the synthesis. Following the enzymatic reaction, the template can then be readily recovered from the product mixture for use in subsequent reaction cycles. Heating induces thermal cis-(Z) to trans-(E) relaxation and consequent dissociation from γ-CD whereupon the template can then be precipitated by acidification. For this study we designed and synthesised a set of three water-soluble azobenzene templates with different ortho-substituents and characterised their photoswitching behaviour using UV/vis and NMR spectroscopy. The templates were tested in cyclodextrin glucanotransferase-mediated dynamic combinatorial libraries (DCLs) of cyclodextrins while irradiating at different wavelengths to control the cis/trans ratios. To rationalise the behaviour of the DCLs, NMR titrations were carried out to investigate the binding interactions between α-, β- and γ-CD and the cis and trans isomers of each template.

Catalytic vs. uncatalyzed [2 + 2] photocycloadditions of quinones with alkynes

Photoreactions of quinones with alkynes under catalytic and non-catalytic conditions were studied. In contrast to recent reports, simple irradiation with blue light is sufficient to trigger [2 + 2] photocycloadditions, which afford either fused cyclobutenes or reactive para-quinone methides (p-QMs) depending on the quinone structure. Revision of the chemo- and regioselectivity of the uncatalyzed photoreactions provided useful insight into their overlooked relatedness to the recently developed catalytic protocols. Experimental evidence indicates that the reactivity of the photochemically generated p-QMs is sufficient to perform uncatalyzed reactions with nucleophiles, which can help to explain the existing transformations and develop new cascade transformations involving quinones and alkynes.

Atomically precise chiral silver clusters based on non-chiral ligands for acid/base stimulated luminescence response

Chiral metal nanoclusters synthesized by non-chiral ligands are usually in the form of racemates. Thus, resolving racemic compounds continues to be a great challenge. Herein, we report a case of the racemic compound hexanuclear silver cluster (Ag6-Rac) protected by the non-chiral sulfhydryl ligand sodium 1H-1,2,3-triazole-5-thiolate (SHTT) and 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (dpppy). The homochiral clusters in Ag6-Rac are able to spontaneously crystallize and undergo chiral resolution to obtain a racemic conglomerate (Ag6-S/Ag6-R) by solvent-induced crystallization. Interestingly, the Ag6-Rac clusters exhibit strong luminescence in solid and solution, which can respond to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and reversible cycling over five times using diethylamine (DEA). This work provides a new research model for resolving racemic clusters and constructing stimulus-responsive clusters.

Regioselective C-F Bond Transformations of Silyl Difluoroenolates

Herein, we report the development of a nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of silyl difluoroenolates with aryl zinc reagents via C-F bond cleavage. Treatment of a stoichiometric amount of Ni(0)/N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) with silyl difluoroenolates in the presence of a lithium salt resulted in C-F bond cleavage to selectively afford the corresponding (Z)-alkenyl Ni complexes. On the basis of the observations, we developed a catalytic cross-coupling reaction that selectively delivers a single geometric isomer of a fluoroenolate.

High-Performance Li-S Batteries with a Minimum Shuttle Effect: Disproportionation of Dissolved Polysulfide to Elemental Sulfur Catalyzed by a Bifunctional Carbon Host

A long cycle-life Li-S battery (both the coin cell and pouch cell) is reported with minimum shuttle effect. The performance was achieved with a bifunctional carbon material with three unique features. The carbon can catalyze the disproportionation of dissolved long-chain polysulfide ions to elemental sulfur; the carbon can ensure homogeneous precipitation of Li sulfide on the host carbon, and the carbon has a honeycomb porous structure, which can store sulfur better. All the features are demonstrated experimentally and reported in this paper. Few dissolved polysulfides are found by high-performance liquid chromatography in the electrolyte of the Li-S batteries during cycling, and only dissolved elemental sulfur is detected. The unique porous structure of the carbon made from raw silk is revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The N-containing functionalities that were introduced to carbon from the amino acids of raw silk can catalyze the disproportionation of the dissolved S_n^2- to solid S₈ at the cathode side, thereby mitigating the shuttle effect. In addition, the hierarchical honeycomb porous structures generated by a carbonization process can physically trap high-order lithium polysulfides and sustain the volume change of sulfur. With the synergistic effects of the unique structures and characteristics of the carbon prepared at 800 °C, the sulfur/carbon composite delivers a high reversible capacity of over 1000 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles with a sulfur content of 1.2 mg cm^-2 in a pouch cell.

G4-DNA formation and chromatin remodelling are interdependent in human cells

DNA G-quadruplexes (G4s) have been identified as important biological targets for transcriptional, translational, and epigenetic regulation. The stabilisation of G4s with small molecule ligands has emerged as a technique to regulate gene expression and as a potential therapeutic approach for human diseases. Here, we demonstrate that ligand stabilisation of G4s causes altered chromatin accessibility dependent on the targeting specificity of the molecule. In particular, stabilisation of a target G4 using the highly specific GTC365 ligand resulted in differential accessibility of 61 genomic regions, while the broad-targeting G4 ligand, GQC-05, stabilised many G4s and induced a global shift towards increased accessibility of gene promoter regions. Interestingly, while we observed distinct effects of each ligand on RNA expression levels and the induction of DNA double-stranded breaks, both ligands modified DNA damage response pathways. Our work represents the dual possibility of G4-stabilising ligands for specific or global chromatin modulation via unique targeting characteristics.

A Pd-catalyzed highly selective three-component protocol for trisubstituted allenes

Herein we report the first example of a Pd-catalyzed highly selective three-component reaction of alkynyl-1,4-diol dicarbonates, organoboronic acids, and malonate anions for the efficient synthesis of trisubstituted 2,3-allenyl malonates not readily available by the known protocols. The reaction demonstrates an excellent regio- and chemo-selectivity for both the oxidative addition referring to the two C-O bonds and the subsequent coupling with the nucleophile with a remarkable functional group compatibility. A series of control experiments confirm a unique mechanism involving β-O elimination forming alka-1,2,3-triene and the subsequent insertion of its terminal C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond into the Ar-Pd bond.

Real-time cell metabolism assessed repeatedly on the same cells via para-hydrogen induced polarization

Signal-enhanced or hyperpolarized nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy stands out as a unique tool to monitor real-time enzymatic reactions in living cells. The singlet state of para-hydrogen is thereby one source of spin order that can be converted into largely enhanced signals of e.g. metabolites. Here, we have investigated a parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) approach as a biological assay for in vitro cellular metabolic characterization. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to perform consecutive measurements yielding metabolic information on the same sample. We observed a strongly reduced pyruvate-to-lactate conversion rate (flux) of a Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer cell line L1236 treated with FK866, an inhibitor of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) affecting the amount of NAD⁺ and thus NADH in cells. In the consecutive measurement the flux was recovered by NADH to the same amount as in the single-measurement-per-sample and provides a promising new analytical tool for continuous real-time studies combinable with bioreactors and lab-on-a-chip devices in the future.

Reversible Switch in Charge Storage Enabled by Selective Ion Transport in Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Solid-electrolyte interphases (SEIs) in advanced rechargeable batteries ensure reversible electrode reactions at extreme potentials beyond the thermodynamic stability limits of electrolytes by insulating electrons while allowing the transport of working ions. Such selective ion transport occurs naturally in biological cell membranes as a ubiquitous prerequisite of many life processes and a foundation of biodiversity. In addition, cell membranes can selectively open and close the ion channels in response to external stimuli (e.g., electrical, chemical, mechanical, and thermal), giving rise to "gating" mechanisms that help manage intracellular reactions. We wondered whether the chemistry and structure of SEIs can mimic those of cell membranes, such that ion gating can be replicated. That is, can SEIs realize a reversible switching between two electrochemical behaviors, i.e., the ion intercalation chemistry of batteries and the ion adsorption of capacitors? Herein, we report such SEIs that result in thermally activated selective ion transport. The function of open/close gate switches is governed by the chemical and structural dynamics of SEIs under different thermal conditions, with precise behaviors as conducting and insulating interphases that enable battery and capacitive processes within a finite temperature window. Such an ion gating function is synergistically contributed by Arrhenius-activated ion transport and SEI dissolution/regrowth. Following the understanding of this new mechanism, we then develop an electrochemical method to heal the SEI layer in situ. The knowledge acquired in this work reveals the possibility of hitherto unknown biomimetic properties of SEIs, which will guide us to leverage such complexities to design better SEIs for future battery chemistries.

Stimulus-responsive peptide hydrogels: a safe and least invasive administration approach for tumor treatment

Tumours, with increasing mortality around the world, have bothered human beings for decades. Enhancing the targeting of antitumor drugs to tumour tissues is the key to enhancing their antitumor effects. The tumour microenvironment is characterised by a relatively low pH, overexpression of certain enzymes, redox imbalance, etc. Therefore, smart drug delivery systems that respond to the tumour microenvironment have been proposed to selectively release antitumor drugs. Among them, peptide hydrogels as a local drug delivery system have received much attention due to advantages such as high biocompatibility, degradability and high water-absorbing capacity. The combination of peptide segments with different physiological functions allows for tumour targeting, self-aggregation, responsiveness, etc. Morphological and microstructural changes in peptide hydrogels can occur when utilising the inherent pathological microenvironment of tumours to trigger drug release, which endows such systems with limited adverse effects and improved therapeutic efficiency. Herein, this review outlined the driving forces, impact factors, and sequence design in peptide hydrogels. We also discussed the triggers to induce the transformation of peptide-based hydrogels in the tumour microenvironment and described the advancements of peptide-based hydrogels for local drug delivery in tumour treatment. Finally, we gave a brief perspective on the prospects and challenges in this field.

A novel, efficient and magnetically recyclable Cu-Ni bimetallic alloy nanoparticle as a highly active bifunctional catalyst for Pd-free Sonogashira and C-N cross-coupling reactions: a combined theoretical and experimental study

In this study, a Fe3O4@SiO2@Cyt-Ni/Cu nanocomposite as a novel heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst was synthesized which exhibits efficient performance for the Sonogashira and C-N cross-coupling reactions. The characterization of the catalyst was studied by FT-IR, PXRD, VSM, EDX, TEM, FE-SEM and TGA analyses. The geometry optimization and relative energies of the designed bimetallic complexes were theoretically determined using density functional theory (DFT) calculation at the B3LYP/6-31G**/LANL2DZ level. The catalyst showed good activity in the coupling of various aryl halides with alkynes (Sonogashira reaction) as well as aryl halide with N-heterocycles and achieved coupling products with good to high yields for all of them in a short time. The high catalytic performance could be due to the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu, which causes the reaction to proceed more efficiently. This heterogeneous nanocatalyst could be easily recovered from the reaction mixture with an external magnet and reused for 7 consecutive runs with minimal loss of catalytic activity.

Theoretical Study of the Molecular Passivation Effect of Lewis Base/Acid on Lead-Free Tin Perovskite Surface Defects

Extensive research has been recently conducted to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells. However, the charge carriers are easily trapped by the defect sites located at the interface between the perovskite layer and the electrode, which decreases the PCE. To reduce such defect sites, the passivation technique is frequently employed to coat small molecules on the perovskite surface during the manufacturing process. To clarify the passivation mechanism from a molecular viewpoint, we performed density functional theory calculations to target Pb-free Sn perovskites (CH₃NH₃SnI₃). We investigated the passivation effect of Lewis base/acid molecules, such as ethylene diamine (EDA) and iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB), and discussed behaviors of the defect levels within the bandgap as they have strong negative impacts on the PCE. The adsorption of EDA/IPFB on the Sn perovskite surface can remove the defect levels from the bandgap. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of interactions with molecular orbitals.

Theoretical Insight into the Mechanism of Cu(I)-Catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] Cycloaddition to β-Pyrrolinones: Azaheterocycle Formation and Assisted Dehydrogenation with Solvent MeNO2

The construction of multisubstituted β-pyrrolinones from simple starting materials remains a great challenge. Recently, a novel Cu(I)-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition reaction was developed for rapid access to fully substituted β-pyrrolinones, which are difficult to synthesize through traditional methods as this approach may involve unusual C-nucleophilic addition of enamines and umpolung of imines. Elucidating the reaction mechanism may inspire the development of new methodologies via the unusual C-nucleophilic addition of enamines and imines. However, the reaction mechanism is still unclear because none of the intermediates was observed during the reaction process. In this work, we employed theoretical and computational chemistry to investigate the possible pathway. Finally, the calculated results indicate that ketene formed by the Wolff rearrangement of α-diazo-β-ketoester reacts with enamine formed by the addition of alkynes and amine, affording the five-membered azaheterocycle, and this process involves the formation of a six-membered ring intermediate and sequential isomerization, and the further dehydrogenation needs to be assisted with solvent MeNO₂.

Fe3O4 supported [Cu(ii)(met)(pro-H)2] complex as a novel nanomagnetic catalytic system for room temperature C-O coupling reactions

In this study, a newly-designed copper(ii) complex of metformin and l-proline which was immobilized on Fe₃O₄ MNPs was developed. The structure of the catalyst platform was fully characterized using spectroscopic analyses. Moreover, the catalytic activity of [Fe₃O₄@Cu(ii)(Met)(Pro-H)₂] was investigated in a one-pot synthesis of a variety of functionalized ethers in reasonable to excellent yields through Ullman reaction in an aqueous environment using various aryl halides, phenol, and Cs₂CO₃ and without using any external Cu-reducing agents. Notably, gentle catalytic conditions, quick reaction times, applicability, low cost, and preventing dangerous chemicals and solvents during synthesis and catalytic application are some of the superior properties of the [Fe₃O₄@Cu(ii)(Met)(Pro-H)₂] complex. Furthermore, the catalyst can be reused for several runs (at least eight times) without remarkable loss in efficiency.

Force field-inspired transformer network assisted crystal density prediction for energetic materials

Machine learning has great potential in predicting chemical information with greater precision than traditional methods. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have become increasingly popular in recent years, as they can automatically learn the features of the molecule from the graph, significantly reducing the time needed to find and build molecular descriptors. However, the application of machine learning to energetic materials property prediction is still in the initial stage due to insufficient data. In this work, we first curated a dataset of 12,072 compounds containing CHON elements, which are traditionally regarded as main composition elements of energetic materials, from the Cambridge Structural Database, then we implemented a refinement to our force field-inspired neural network (FFiNet), through the adoption of a Transformer encoder, resulting in force field-inspired Transformer network (FFiTrNet). After the improvement, our model outperforms other machine learning-based and GNNs-based models and shows its powerful predictive capabilities especially for high-density materials. Our model also shows its capability in predicting the crystal density of potential energetic materials dataset (i.e. Huang & Massa dataset), which will be helpful in practical high-throughput screening of energetic materials.

Improvement of optical properties of AISI 304 as a solar absorber using a pulsed fiber laser

Solar energy is an environmentally friendly and inexhaustible natural resource. It can be converted into thermal energy by using concentrated solar power (CSP) methods. One of the key components of CSP is a solar absorber, which absorbs concentrated solar radiation and converts it into heat. Recently, there have been many studies on enhancing the solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency of solar absorbers. In this work, a pulsed fiber laser was used to modify the surface of AISI 304 stainless steel as a solar absorbing material. By varying the energy density, surface roughness and oxide films can be formed, which affect the solar absorptance and thermal emittance of the substrate. The surface characteristics and corresponding optical properties were investigated. The surface roughness was measured to be in the range of 9-158 nm. Due to heat generated during engraving, metal surface oxidation occurs on the AISI 304 substrate, resulting in different values of solar absorptance and thermal emittance. Compared with the unmodified surface, the modified AISI 304 surfaces resulted in solar absorptance ranging from 58.57% to 91.78%, and the thermal emittance ranged from 10.56% to 32.90%. Consequently, the solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency was improved from 50.09% to 81.69%, and the technique can be used for solar absorbing applications.

Exploring the Interplay between Metabolic Pathways and Taxane Production in Elicited Taxus baccata Cell Suspensions

Taxus cell cultures are a reliable biotechnological source of the anticancer drug paclitaxel. However, the interplay between taxane production and other metabolic pathways during elicitation remains poorly understood. In this study, we combined untargeted metabolomics and elicited Taxus baccata cell cultures to investigate variations in taxane-associated metabolism under the influence of 1 µM coronatine (COR) and 150 µM salicylic acid (SA). Our results demonstrated pleiotropic effects induced by both COR and SA elicitors, leading to differential changes in cell growth, taxane content, and secondary metabolism. Metabolite annotation revealed significant effects on N-containing compounds, phenylpropanoids, and terpenoids. Multivariate analysis showed that the metabolomic profiles of control and COR-treated samples are closer to each other than to SA-elicited samples at different time points (8, 16, and 24 days). The highest level of paclitaxel content was detected on day 8 under SA elicitation, exhibiting a negative correlation with the biomarkers kauralexin A2 and taxusin. Our study provides valuable insights into the intricate metabolic changes associated with paclitaxel production, aiding its potential optimization through untargeted metabolomics and an evaluation of COR/SA elicitor effects.

Lipid Corona Formation on Micro- and Nanoplastic Particles Modulates Uptake and Toxicity in A549 Cells

Plastic waste is a global issue leaving no continents unaffected. In the environment, ultraviolet radiation and shear forces in water and land contribute to generating micro- and nanoplastic particles (MNPP), which organisms can easily take up. Plastic particles enter the human food chain, and the accumulation of particles within the human body is expected. Crossing epithelial barriers and cellular uptake of MNPP involves the interaction of plastic particles with lipids. To this end, we generated unilamellar vesicles from POPC (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine) and POPS (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine) and incubated them with pristine, carboxylated, or aminated polystyrene spheres (about 1 µm in diameter) to generate lipid coronas around the particles. Lipid coronas enhanced the average particle sizes and partially changed the MNPP zeta potential and polydispersity. In addition, lipid coronas led to significantly enhanced uptake of MNPP particles but not their cytotoxicity, as determined by flow cytometry. Finally, adding proteins to lipid corona nanoparticles further modified MNPP uptake by reducing the uptake kinetics, especially in pristine and carboxylated plastic samples. In conclusion, our study demonstrates for the first time the impact of different types of lipids on differently charged MNPP particles and the biological consequences of such modifications to better understand the potential hazards of plastic exposure.

Review on the Discovery of Novel Natural Herbicide Safeners

The phytotoxicity of herbicides on crops is a major dilemma in agricultural production. Fortunately, the emergence of herbicide safeners is an excellent solution to this challenge, selectively enhancing the performance of herbicides in controlling weeds while reducing the phytotoxicity to crops. But owing to their potential toxicity, only a tiny proportion of safeners are commercially available. Natural products as safeners have been extensively explored, which are generally safe to mammals and cause little pollution to the environment. They are typically endogenous signal molecules or phytohormones, which are generally difficult to extract and synthesize, and exhibit relatively lower activity than commercial products. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt rational design approaches to modify the structure of natural safeners. This paper reviews the application, safener effects, structural characteristics, and modifications of natural safeners and provides insights on the discovery of natural products as potential safeners in the future.

Two novel Ln8 clusters bridged by CO32- effectively convert CO2 into oxazolidinones and cyclic carbonates

It is difficult and challenging to design and construct high-nuclearity Ln(III)-based clusters due to the high coordination numbers and versatile coordination geometries of Ln(III) ions. Herein, two novel octanuclear Ln(III)-based clusters [Ln₈(H₂L^-)₄(HL^2-)₄(NO₃)₆ (CO₃)₂](NO₃)₂·2CH₃CN (Ln = Nd (1) and Sm (2)) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The X-ray single analysis reveals that both 1 and 2 are octanuclear structures and the eight central Ln(III) ions are bridged by two CO₃^2- anions. Catalytic study revealed that 1 and 2 can effectively catalyze the cycloaddition reaction of CO₂ and aziridines or epoxides simultaneously under mild conditions. What is more, cluster 1, as a heterogeneous catalyst, can be reused at least three times without obvious loss in catalytic activity for coupling of CO₂ and epoxides. To our knowledge, cluster 1 is the first Ln(III)-based cluster catalyst used for the conversion of CO₂ with aziridines or epoxides simultaneously. This work provides a successful strategy to integrate high-nuclear Ln(III)-based clusters for CO₂ conversion, which may open a new space for the construction of multifunctional high-nuclear Ln(III)-based clusters as efficient catalysts for CO₂ conversion.

Composition-Defined Optical Properties and the Direct-to-Indirect Transition in Core-Shell In1-xGaxP/ZnS Colloidal Quantum Dots

Semiconductors are commonly divided into materials with direct or indirect band gaps based on the relative positions of the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band in crystal momentum (k) space. It has, however, been debated if k is a useful quantum number to describe the band structure in quantum-confined nanocrystalline systems, which blur the distinction between direct and indirect gap semiconductors. In bulk III-V semiconductor alloys like In_1-xGa_xP, the band structure can be tuned continuously from the direct- to indirect-gap by changing the value of x. The effect of strong quantum confinement on the direct-to-indirect transition in this system has yet to be established because high-quality colloidal nanocrystal samples have remained inaccessible. Herein, we report one of the first systematic studies of ternary III-V nanocrystals by utilizing an optimized molten-salt In-to-Ga cation exchange protocol to yield bright In_1-xGa_xP/ZnS core-shell particles with photoluminescence quantum yields exceeding 80%. We performed two-dimensional solid-state NMR studies to assess the alloy homogeneity and the extent of surface oxidation in In_1-xGa_xP cores. The radiative decay lifetime for In_1-xGa_xP/ZnS monotonically increases with higher gallium content. Transient absorption studies on In_1-xGa_xP/ZnS nanocrystals demonstrate signatures of direct- and indirect-like behavior based on the presence or absence, respectively, of excitonic bleach features. Atomistic electronic structure calculations based on the semi-empirical pseudopotential model are used to calculate absorption spectra and radiative lifetimes and evaluate band-edge degeneracy; the resulting calculated electronic properties are consistent with experimental observations. By studying photoluminescence characteristics at elevated temperatures, we demonstrate that a reduced lattice mismatch at the III-V/II-VI core-shell interface can enhance the thermal stability of emission. These insights establish cation exchange in molten inorganic salts as a viable synthetic route to nontoxic, high-quality In_1-xGa_xP/ZnS QD emitters with desirable optoelectronic properties.

Photoinduced C(sp3)-H Functionalization of Glycine Derivatives: Preparation of Unnatural α-Amino Acids and Late-Stage Modification of Peptides

ConspectusPeptides are essential components of living systems and contribute to critical biological processes, such as cell proliferation, immune defense, tumor formation, and differentiation. Therefore, peptides have attracted considerable attention as targets for the development of therapeutic products. The incorporation of unnatural amino acid residues into peptides can considerably impact peptide immunogenicity, toxicity, side effects, water solubility, action duration, and distribution and enhance the peptides' druggability. Typically, the direct modification of natural amino acids is a practical and effective approach for promptly obtaining unnatural amino acids. However, selective functionalization of multiple C(sp³)-H bonds with comparable chemical reactivities in the peptide side chains remains a formidable challenge. Furthermore, chemical modifications aimed at highly reactive (nucleophilic and aromatic) groups on peptide side chains can interfere with the biological activity of peptides.In recent years, the rapid advancement of photoinduced radical reactions has made photoredox radical-radical cross-coupling a practical approach for constructing C(sp³)-C(sp³) bonds under mild conditions. Glycine, a naturally occurring amino acid and the fundamental skeleton of all α-amino acids, provides a basis for the alkylated modification of its own α-C(sp³)-H bond under mild conditions. This Account describes our recent research endeavors for systematically investigating the photocatalytic α-C(sp³)-H alkylation of glycine derivatives via radical-radical coupling between N-aryl glycinate-derived radicals and various alkyl radicals. In 2018, we disclosed the photoinduced Cu-catalyzed decarboxylative α-C(sp³)-H alkylation of glycine derivatives. Subsequently, we developed a catalyst-free method for alkylating glycine derivatives and glycine residues in peptides via electron donor-acceptor (EDA)-complex-promoted single electron transfer. Moreover, we developed a photoinduced method for the radical alkylation of N-aryl glycinate α-C(sp³)-H bonds using unactivated alkyl chlorides (iodides) under photocatalyst-free conditions. Notably, by building on racemic alkylations of glycine derivatives and glycine-residue-containing peptides, we recently stereoselectively alkylated the N-aryl glycinate α-C(sp³)-H bond using a dual-functional Cu catalyst generated in situ for synthesizing a series of unnatural chiral α-amino and C-glycoamino acids.We have developed a series of methods for synthesizing unnatural amino acids through the α-C(sp³)-H alkylation of glycine derivatives using photoredox-promoted radical coupling as a key strategy. These methods are efficient and versatile and can be used for the late-stage modification of peptides in various contexts. Our work builds on the fundamental importance of glycine as the basic scaffold of all α-amino acids and highlights the potential of radical-based chemistry for developing chemical transformations in peptide synthesis. These findings have broad implications for chemical biology and may open doors for discovering peptide drugs and developing therapeutics.

Achieving High Selectivity in Photocatalytic Oxidation of Toluene on Amorphous BiOCl Nanosheets Coupled with TiO2

The inert C(sp³)-H bond and easy overoxidation of toluene make the selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde a great challenge. Herein, we present that a photocatalyst, constructed with a small amount (1 mol %) of amorphous BiOCl nanosheets assembled on TiO₂ (denoted as 0.01BOC/TiO₂), shows excellent performance in toluene oxidation to benzaldehyde, with 85% selectivity at 10% conversion, and the benzaldehyde formation rate is up to 1.7 mmol g^-1 h^-1, which is 5.6 and 3.7 times that of bare TiO₂ and BOC, respectively. In addition to the charge separation function of the BOC/TiO₂ heterojunction, we found that the amorphous structure of BOC endows its abundant surface oxygen vacancies (Ov), which can further promote the charge separation. Most importantly, the surface Ov of amorphous BOC can efficiently adsorb and activate O₂, and amorphous BOC makes the product, benzaldehyde, easily desorb from the catalyst surface, which alleviates the further oxidation of benzaldehyde, and results in the high selectivity. This work highlights the importance of the microstructure based on heterojunctions, which is conducive to the rational design of photocatalysts with high performance in organic synthesis.

Surface Functional Groups Affect Iron (Hydr)oxide Heterogeneous Nucleation: Implications for Membrane Scaling

Because of its favorable thermodynamics and fast kinetics, heterogeneous solid nucleation on membranes triggers early-stage mineral scaling. Iron (hydr)oxide, a typical membrane scale, initially forms as nanoparticles that interact with surface functional groups on membranes, but these nanoscale phenomena are difficult to observe in real time. In this study, we utilized in situ grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering and ex situ atomic force microscopy to examine the heterogeneous nucleation of iron (hydr)oxide on surface functional groups commonly used in membranes, including hydroxyl (OH), carboxyl (COOH), and fluoro (F) groups. We found that, compared to nucleation on hydrophilic OH- and COOH-surfaces, the high hydrophobicity of an F-modified surface significantly reduced the extents of both heterogeneously and homogeneously formed iron (hydr)oxide nucleation. Moreover, on the OH-surface, the high functional group density of 0.76 nmol/cm² caused faster heterogeneous nucleation than that on a COOH-surface, with a density of 0.28 ± 0.04 nmol/cm². The F-surface also had the highest heterogeneous nucleation energy barrier (26 ± 0.6 kJ/mol), followed by COOH- (23 ± 0.8 kJ/mol) and OH- (20 ± 0.9 kJ/mol) surfaces. The kinetic and thermodynamic information provided here will help us better predict the rates and extents of early-stage scaling of iron (hydr)oxide nanoparticles in membrane processes.

H2O Derivatives Mediate CO Activation in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis: A Review

The process of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is commonly described as a series of reactions in which CO and H₂ are dissociated and adsorbed on the metals and then rearranged to produce hydrocarbons and H₂O. However, CO dissociation adsorption is regarded as the initial stage of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and an essential factor in the control of catalytic activity. Several pathways have been proposed to activate CO, namely direct CO dissociation, activation hydrogenation, and activation by insertion into growing chains. In addition, H₂O is considered an important by-product of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions and has been shown to play a key role in regulating the distribution of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products. The presence of H₂O may influence the reaction rate, the product distribution, and the deactivation rate. Focus on H₂O molecules and H₂O-derivatives (H*, OH* and O*) can assist CO activation hydrogenation on Fe- and Co-based catalysts. In this work, the intermediates (C*, O*, HCO*, COH*, COH*, CH*, etc.) and reaction pathways were analyzed, and the H₂O and H₂O derivatives (H*, OH* and O*) on Fe- and Co-based catalysts and their role in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction process were reviewed.

Ru(II)-catalyzed synthesis of poly-substituted furans via intermolecular oxidative annulation reaction of ethyl 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanoates with aryl alkynes/heteroaryl alkynes

The oxidative annulation reaction of ethyl 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanoates with internal alkynes proceeds efficiently in the presence of a Ru(II)-catalyst, a copper oxidant and an additive such as AgSbF₆ to give poly-substituted furans, which offers a novel method for the selective construction of poly-substituted furans. The reaction has wider substrate scope with simple starting materials, and the desired tetrasubstituted furans were prepared in good to excellent yields.

Deep-Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Realized by a Dynamic Interfacial Ion Exchange

The external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the sky-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has reached 18.65%. However, the EQE of the deep-blue PeLEDs is still inferior to that of sky-blue PeLEDs, which restricts the PeLED application in displays. Herein, a novel dynamic interfacial ion-exchange technique is developed to obtain deep-blue PeLEDs. By spin-coating quaternary ammonium chloride on top of a quasi-2D green perovskite film, a 68 nm spectral transition from green light emission at 513 nm to deep-blue light emission at 445 nm has been successfully realized. To the best of our knowledge, it is the largest spectrum transition ever achieved. By further introducing tricyclohexylphosphine oxide into the perovskite precursor solution to passivate defects, high-quality deep-blue PeLEDs have been fabricated with color coordinates at (0.13, 0.06). The maximum EQE reaches 1.8%, and the peak luminance reaches 847 cd/m².

Microporous Organic Network: Superhydrophobic Coating to Protect Metal-Organic Frameworks from Hydrolytic Degradation

Despite the rapid development of versatile metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the synthesis of water-stable MOFs remains challenging, which significantly limits their practical applications. Herein, a novel engineering strategy was developed to prepare superhydrophobic MOFs by an in situ fluorinated microporous organic network (FMON) coating. Through controllable modification, the resulting MOF@FMON retained the porosity and crystallinity of the pristine MOFs. Owing to the superhydrophobicity of the FMON and the feasibility of MOF synthesis, the FMON coating could be in situ integrated with various water-sensitive MOFs to provide superhydrophobicity. The coating thickness and hydrophobicity of the MOF@FMON composites were easily regulated by changing the FMON monomer concentration. The MOF@FMON composites exhibited excellent oil/water separation and catalytic activities and enhanced durability in aqueous solutions. This study provides a general approach for the synthesis of superhydrophobic MOFs, expanding the application scope of MOFs.

Covalently Functionalized MoS2 Initiated Gelation of Hydrogels for Flexible Strain Sensing

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with superior mechanical and electrical conductivity, are one of the most promising two-dimensional materials for creating a generation of intelligent and flexible electronic devices. However, due to the high van der Waals and electrostatic attraction, TMD nanomaterials tend to aggregate in dispersants to achieve a stable state, thus severely limiting their further applications. Surface chemical modification is a common strategy for improving the dispersity of TMD nanomaterials; however, there are still constraints such as limited functionalization methods, low grafting rate, and difficult practice application. Thus, it is challenging to develop innovative surface modification systems. Herein, we covalently modify an olefin molecule on surface-inert MoS₂, and the modified MoS₂ can be used as not only a catalyst for hydrogel polymerization, but also a cross-linker in the hydrogel network. Specifically, allyl is covalently grafted onto chemically exfoliated MoS₂, and this modified MoS₂ can be uniformly dispersed in polar solvents (such as acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and ethanol), remaining stable for more than 2 weeks. The allyl-modified MoS₂ can catalyze the polymerization of polyacrylamide hydrogel and then integrate in the network, which increases the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel. The flexible sensor based on the composite hydrogel exhibits an ideal operating range of 600% and a quick response time of 150 ms. At the same time, the flexible device can also track the massive axial stretching movements of human joints, making it a reliable option for the next wave of wearable sensing technology.

BINOL and triazole-containing Janus rings and 29-8-29-membered tricyclic ladder-type hybridized siloxane: application in the fluorescence sensing of anions

Tetrachloro- and tetraazide-substituted all-cis-tetraphenylcyclotetrasiloxanes (all-cis-T₄) 2 and 3 were synthesized in high yields and were fully characterized. Then the precursor 3 underwent CuAAC click reaction with monopropargyl BINOL 4 and dipropargyl BINOL 6 to give the novel BINOL and triazole-containing all-cis-T₄ cyclic siloxane 5 and the 29-8-29-membered-ring ladder-type hybrid siloxane 7. The sensing ability of compounds 5 and 7 towards anions was studied as well, and it was observed that 7 could selectively recognize iodides through synergistic C-H⋯I hydrogen bonding, resulting in an impressive fluorescence quenching with a K_sv of 8.10 × 10⁴ M^-1.

A heteroleptic fused bi-cuboctahedral Cu21S2 cluster

A new dicationic cluster, [Cu₂₁S₂{S₂CNⁿBu₂}₉(C₂Ph)₆]²⁺, where the Cu21S2 kernel consists of two S@Cu₁₂ cuboctahedra sharing a triangular Cu₃ face is reported. Its waist part is bridged by three dithiocarbamate ligands, each in a hexaconnective, hexametallic (μ₃, μ₃) coordination pattern, an unprecedented feature in Cu nanocluster chemistry.

Regulating excitonic effects in non-oxide based XPSe3 (X = Cd, Zn) monolayers towards enhanced photocatalysis for overall water splitting

The non-oxide 2D materials have garnered considerable interest due to their potential utilization as photocatalysts, which offer a superior substitute to metal-oxide-based photocatalysts. This study investigates the impact of the dielectric environment on the size and binding energy of excitons in atomically thin, experimentally synthesized semiconducting monolayers [XPSe₃, X = (Cd, Zn)] to address the critical problem of electron-hole recombination, which significantly hinders the efficiency of most photocatalysts. We employ a precise non-hydrogenic model surpassing the hydrogenic-based Mott-Wannier model. Our findings are among the first few demonstrations of an increase in exciton size (and decrease in exciton binding energy) as environmental screening increases. These findings have implications for photocatalytic water splitting and are not limited to metal phosphorus trichalcogenides, but can be applied to other classes of 2D materials as well. This work also compares metal-oxide photocatalysts, which have been the focus of much research over the past five decades, to non-oxide-based metal phosphorus trichalcogenide photocatalysts, which offer a superior alternative due to their ability to address issues such as light-harvesting inability in the visible spectrum and unwanted charge recombination centres. Furthermore, the implications of this study extend beyond photocatalysts and are significant for the design and development of next-generation optoelectronic devices that incorporate excitonic processes, such as solar cells, photodetectors, LEDs, etc.

Animal models of Parkinson's disease: bridging the gap between disease hallmarks and research questions

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. More than 200 years after its first clinical description, PD remains a serious affliction that affects a growing proportion of the population. Prevailing treatments only alleviate symptoms; there is still neither a cure that targets the neurodegenerative processes nor therapies that modify the course of the disease. Over the past decades, several animal models have been developed to study PD. Although no model precisely recapitulates the pathology, they still provide valuable information that contributes to our understanding of the disease and the limitations of our treatment options. This review comprehensively summarizes the different animal models available for Parkinson's research, with a focus on those induced by drugs, neurotoxins, pesticides, genetic alterations, α-synuclein inoculation, and viral vector injections. We highlight their characteristics and ability to reproduce PD-like phenotypes. It is essential to realize that the strengths and weaknesses of each model and the induction technique at our disposal are determined by the research question being asked. Our review, therefore, seeks to better aid researchers by ensuring a concrete discernment of classical and novel animal models in PD research.

A modular chemigenetic calcium indicator enables in vivo functional imaging with near-infrared light

Genetically encoded fluorescent calcium indicators have revolutionized neuroscience and other biological fields by allowing cellular-resolution recording of physiology during behavior. However, we currently lack bright, genetically targetable indicators in the near infrared that can be used in animals. Here, we describe WHaloCaMP, a modular chemigenetic calcium indicator built from bright dye-ligands and protein sensor domains that can be genetically targeted to specific cell populations. Fluorescence change in WHaloCaMP results from reversible quenching of the bound dye via a strategically placed tryptophan. WHaloCaMP is compatible with rhodamine dye-ligands that fluoresce from green to near-infrared, including several dye-ligands that efficiently label the central nervous system in animals. When bound to a near-infrared dye-ligand, WHaloCaMP1a is more than twice as bright as jGCaMP8s, and shows a 7× increase in fluorescence intensity and a 2.1 ns increase in fluorescence lifetime upon calcium binding. We use WHaloCaMP1a with near-infrared fluorescence emission to image Ca2+ responses in flies and mice, to perform three-color multiplexed functional imaging of hundreds of neurons and astrocytes in zebrafish larvae, and to quantitate calcium concentration using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM).

Solid-Phase Synthesis of Nannocystin Ax and Its Analogues

Solid-phase total synthesis of nannocystin Ax (1) was disclosed. A coupling reaction between a peptide and a polyketide moiety was conducted on a solid support, and macrocyclization was achieved by Mitsunobu cyclization. The established synthetic route was efficient to prepare its analogues, which contain different types of peptide moieties.

Covalent organic frameworks for direct photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide from water, air and sunlight

Solar-driven photosynthesis is a sustainable process for the production of hydrogen peroxide, the efficiency of which is plagued by side reactions. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that can form suitable intermediates and inhibit side reactions show great promise to photo-synthesize H₂O₂. However, the insufficient formation and separation/transfer of photogenerated charges in such materials restricts the efficiency of H₂O₂ production. Herein, we provide a strategy for the design of donor-acceptor COFs to greatly boost H₂O₂ photosynthesis. We demonstrate that the optimal intramolecular polarity of COFs, achieved by using suitable amounts of phenyl groups as electron donors, can maximize the free charge generation, which leads to high H₂O₂ yield rates (605 μmol g^-1 h^-1) from water, oxygen and visible light without sacrificial agents. Combining in-situ characterization with computational calculations, we describe how the triazine N-sites with optimal N 2p states play a crucial role in H₂O activation and selective oxidation into H₂O₂. We further experimentally demonstrate that H₂O₂ can be efficiently produced in tap, river or sea water with natural sunlight and air for water decontamination.

From plant to cancer drug: lessons learned from the discovery of taxol

Many researchers in the natural product sciences dream of discovering a successful drug. For almost all of us, this dream will never be realized. Among the heroes of our past, though, there is a team whose efforts led to the discovery of not one but two new drugs. Dr Monroe Wall and Dr Mansukh Wani isolated and solved the structures for taxol and camptothecin, plant-based compounds that continue to play a critical role in cancer therapy today. Since the 1960s and 1970s when Wall, Wani and collaborators did their seminal work, there have been tremendous technological advances in the natural product sciences. With access to most sophisticated technology, it might be expected that the rate of discovery of new drugs from plants and other sources would have sped up. However, this has not come to pass. Why is this? Is it that the promise of new drug candidates from plant-based sources has been exhausted? Has our fascination with new technologies and with the promise of the genomics revolution caused us to stop investing effort and resources in the practices that are proven to yield success? With this Viewpoint, we share the story of taxol's discovery, highlighting critical challenges that were overcome and considering their relevance to botanical natural products drug discovery today. We hope that consideration of lessons learned from the past will help fuel success by researchers currently studying plants with the goal of discovering promising therapeutic leads.
