Many factors, including temperature, pH, redox state, light, and magnetic fields, are being studied for their potential to affect a material's properties, interactions, structure, and/or dimensions. New tissue engineering and drug delivery methods are made possible by the ability of living systems to respond to both external stimuli and their own internal signals) for example, materials composed of stimuliresponsive polymers that self assemble or undergo phase transitions or morphology transformation. The researcher examines the potential of smart materials as controlled drug release vehicles in tissue engineering, aiming to enable the localized regeneration of injured tissue by delivering precisely dosed drugs at precisely timed intervals.

Piezoelectricity, Pyroelectricity, and Ferroelectricity in Biomaterials and Biomedical Applications

Piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric materials are considered unique biomedical materials due to their dielectric crystals and asymmetric centers that allow them to directly convert various primary forms of energy in the environment, such as sunlight, mechanical energy, and thermal energy, into secondary energy, such as electricity and chemical energy. These materials possess exceptional energy conversion ability and excellent catalytic properties, which have led to their widespread usage within biomedical fields. Numerous biomedical applications have demonstrated great potential with these materials, including disease treatment, biosensors, and tissue engineering. For example, piezoelectric materials are used to stimulate cell growth in bone regeneration, while pyroelectric materials are applied in skin cancer detection and imaging. Ferroelectric materials have even found use in neural implants that record and stimulate electrical activity in the brain. This paper reviews the relationship between ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric effects and the fundamental principles of different catalytic reactions. It also highlights the preparation methods of these three materials and the significant progress made in their biomedical applications. The review concludes by presenting key challenges and future prospects for efficient catalysts based on piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Sonocatalytic cancer therapy: theories, advanced catalysts and system design

Treating cancer remains one of the most formidable challenges in modern medicine, with traditional treatment options often being limited by poor therapeutic outcomes and unacceptable side effects. Nanocatalytic therapy activates tumor-localized catalytic reactions in situ via nontoxic or minimally toxic nanocatalysts responding to unique cues from the tumor microenvironment or external stimuli. In particular, sonocatalytic cancer therapy is a promising approach that has emerged as a potential solution to this problem through the combination of ultrasound waves and catalytic materials to selectively target and destroy cancer cells. Compared to light, ultrasound exhibits higher spatial precision, lower energy attenuation, and superior tissue penetrability, furnishing more energy to catalysts. Multidimensional modulation of nanocatalyst structures and properties is pivotal to maximizing catalytic efficiency given constraints in external stimulative energy as well as substrate types and levels. In this review, we discuss the various theories and mechanisms underlying sonocatalytic cancer therapy, as well as advanced catalysts that have been developed for this application. Additionally, we explore the design of sonocatalytic cancer therapy systems, including the use of heterojunction catalysts and the optimal conditions for achieving maximum therapeutic effects. Finally, we highlight the potential benefits of sonocatalytic cancer therapy over traditional cancer treatments, including its noninvasive nature and lower toxicity.

Review of Piezoelectrical Materials Potentially Useful for Peripheral Nerve Repair

It has increasingly been recognized that electrical currents play a pivotal role in cell migration and tissue repair, in a process named "galvanotaxis". In this review, we summarize the current evidence supporting the potential benefits of electric stimulation (ES) in the physiology of peripheral nerve repair (PNR). Moreover, we discuss the potential of piezoelectric materials in this context. The use of these materials has deserved great attention, as the movement of the body or of the external environment can be used to power internally the electrical properties of devices used for providing ES or acting as sensory receptors in artificial skin (e-skin). The fact that organic materials sustain spontaneous degradation inside the body means their piezoelectric effect is limited in duration. In the case of PNR, this is not necessarily problematic, as ES is only required during the regeneration period. Arguably, piezoelectric materials have the potential to revolutionize PNR with new biomedical devices that range from scaffolds and nerve-guiding conduits to sensory or efferent components of e-skin. However, much remains to be learned regarding piezoelectric materials, their use in manufacturing of biomedical devices, and their sterilization process, to fine-tune their safe, effective, and predictable in vivo application.

Piezoelectric Effect Modulates Nanozyme Activity: Underlying Mechanism and Practical Application

Nanozyme activity relies on surface electron transfer processes. Notably, the piezoelectric effect plays a vital role in influencing nanozyme activity by generating positive and negative charges on piezoelectric materials' surfaces. This article comprehensively reviews the potential mechanisms and practical applications of regulating nanozyme activity through the piezoelectric effect. The article first elucidates how the piezoelectric effect enables nanozymes to exhibit catalytic activity. It is highlighted that the positive and negative charges produced by this effect directly participate in redox reactions, leading to the conversion of materials from an inactive to an active state. Moreover, the piezoelectric field generated can enhance nanozyme activity by accelerating electron transfer rates or reducing binding energy between nanozymes and substrates. Practical applications of piezoelectric nanozymes are explored in the subsequent section, including water pollutant degradation, bacterial disinfection, biological detection, and tumor therapy, which demonstrate the versatile potentials of the piezoelectric effect in nanozyme applications. The review concludes by emphasizing the need for further research into the catalytic mechanisms of piezoelectric nanozymes, suggesting expanding the scope of catalytic types and exploring new application areas. Furthermore, the promising direction of synergistic catalytic therapy is discussed as an inspiring avenue for future research.

3D Printed Polymer Piezoelectric Materials: Transforming Healthcare through Biomedical Applications

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a promising manufacturing platform in biomedical engineering. It offers significant advantages in fabricating complex and customized biomedical products with accuracy, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and reproducibility. The rapidly growing field of three-dimensional printing (3DP), which emphasizes customization as its key advantage, is actively searching for functional materials. Among these materials, piezoelectric materials are highly desired due to their linear electromechanical and thermoelectric properties. Polymer piezoelectrics and their composites are in high demand as biomaterials due to their controllable and reproducible piezoelectric properties. Three-dimensional printable piezoelectric materials have opened new possibilities for integration into biomedical fields such as sensors for healthcare monitoring, controlled drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, microfluidic, and artificial muscle actuators. Overall, this review paper provides insights into the fundamentals of polymer piezoelectric materials, the application of polymer piezoelectric materials in biomedical fields, and highlights the challenges and opportunities in realizing their full potential for functional applications. By addressing these challenges, integrating 3DP and piezoelectric materials can lead to the development of advanced sensors and devices with enhanced performance and customization capabilities for biomedical applications.

Exo Supportive Devices: Summary of Technical Aspects

Human societies have been trying to mitigate the suffering of individuals with physical impairments, with a special effort in the last century. In the 1950s, a new concept arose, finding similarities between animal exoskeletons, and with the goal of medically aiding human movement (for rehabilitation applications). There have been several studies on using exosuits with this purpose in mind. So, the current review offers a critical perspective and a detailed analysis of the steps and key decisions involved in the conception of an exoskeleton. Choices such as design aspects, base materials (structure), actuators (force and motion), energy sources (actuation), and control systems will be discussed, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, examples of exosuits (full-body, upper-body, and lower-body devices) will be presented and described, including their use cases and outcomes. The future of exoskeletons as possible assisted movement solutions will be discussed-pointing to the best options for rehabilitation.

Recent advances in tailoring stimuli-responsive hybrid scaffolds for cardiac tissue engineering and allied applications

To recapitulate bio-physical properties and functional behaviour of native heart tissues, recent tissue engineering-based approaches are focused on developing smart/stimuli-responsive materials for interfacing cardiac cells. Overcoming the drawbacks of the traditionally used biomaterials, these smart materials portray outstanding mechanical and conductive properties while promoting cell-cell interaction and cell-matrix transduction cues in such excitable tissues. To date, a large number of stimuli-responsive materials have been employed for interfacing cardiac tissues alone or in combination with natural/synthetic materials for cardiac tissue engineering. However, their comprehensive classification and a comparative analysis of the role played by these materials in regulating cardiac cell behaviour and in vivo metabolism are much less discussed. In an attempt to cover the recent advances in fabricating stimuli-responsive biomaterials for engineering cardiac tissues, this review details the role of these materials in modulating cardiomyocyte behaviour, functionality and surrounding matrix properties. Furthermore, concerns and challenges regarding the clinical translation of these materials and the possibility of using such materials for the fabrication of bio-actuators and bioelectronic devices are discussed.

Piezoelectric materials for neuroregeneration: a review

The purpose of nerve regeneration via tissue engineering strategies is to create a microenvironment that mimics natural nerve growth for achieving functional recovery. Biomaterial scaffolds offer a promising option for the clinical treatment of large nerve gaps due to the rapid advancement of materials science and regenerative medicine. The design of biomimetic scaffolds should take into account the inherent properties of the nerve and its growth environment, such as stiffness, topography, adhesion, conductivity, and chemical functionality. Various advanced techniques have been employed to develop suitable scaffolds for nerve repair. Since neuronal cells have electrical activity, the transmission of bioelectrical signals is crucial for the functional recovery of nerves. Therefore, an ideal peripheral nerve scaffold should have electrical activity properties similar to those of natural nerves, in addition to a delicate structure. Piezoelectric materials can convert stress changes into electrical signals that can activate different intracellular signaling pathways critical for cell activity and function, which makes them potentially useful for nerve tissue regeneration. However, a comprehensive review of piezoelectric materials for neuroregeneration is still lacking. Thus, this review systematically summarizes the development of piezoelectric materials and their application in the field of nerve regeneration. First, the electrical signals and natural piezoelectricity phenomenon in various organisms are briefly introduced. Second, the most commonly used piezoelectric materials in neural tissue engineering, including biocompatible piezoelectric polymers, inorganic piezoelectric materials, and natural piezoelectric materials, are classified and discussed. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of piezoelectric materials for application in nerve regeneration are proposed.

Stretchable piezoelectric biocrystal thin films

Stretchability is an essential property for wearable devices to match varying strains when interfacing with soft tissues or organs. While piezoelectricity has broad application potentials as tactile sensors, artificial skins, or nanogenerators, enabling tissue-comparable stretchability is a main roadblock due to the intrinsic rigidity and hardness of the crystalline phase. Here, an amino acid-based piezoelectric biocrystal thin film that offers tissue-compatible omnidirectional stretchability with unimpaired piezoelectricity is reported. The stretchability was enabled by a truss-like microstructure that was self-assembled under controlled molecule-solvent interaction and interface tension. Through the open and close of truss meshes, this large scale biocrystal microstructure was able to endure up to 40% tensile strain along different directions while retained both structural integrity and piezoelectric performance. Built on this structure, a tissue-compatible stretchable piezoelectric nanogenerator was developed, which could conform to various tissue surfaces, and exhibited stable functions under multidimensional large strains. In this work, we presented a promising solution that integrates piezoelectricity, stretchability and biocompatibility in one material system, a critical step toward tissue-compatible biomedical devices.

Advances in Bioresorbable Triboelectric Nanogenerators

With the growing demand for next-generation health care, the integration of electronic components into implantable medical devices (IMDs) has become a vital factor in achieving sophisticated healthcare functionalities such as electrophysiological monitoring and electroceuticals worldwide. However, these devices confront technological challenges concerning a noninvasive power supply and biosafe device removal. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensure continuous operation and patient comfort and minimize the physical and economic burden on the patient and the healthcare system. This Review highlights the promising capabilities of bioresorbable triboelectric nanogenerators (B-TENGs) as temporary self-clearing power sources and self-powered IMDs. First, we present an overview of and progress in bioresorbable triboelectric energy harvesting devices, focusing on their working principles, materials development, and biodegradation mechanisms. Next, we examine the current state of on-demand transient implants and their biomedical applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and future perspectives of B-TENGs, aimed at expanding their technological scope and developing innovative solutions. This Review discusses advancements in materials science, chemistry, and microfabrication that can advance the scope of energy solutions available for IMDs. These innovations can potentially change the current health paradigm, contribute to enhanced longevity, and reshape the healthcare landscape soon.

Recent development of piezoelectric biosensors for physiological signal detection and machine learning assisted cardiovascular disease diagnosis

As cardiovascular disease stands as a global primary cause of mortality, there has been an urgent need for continuous and real-time heart monitoring to effectively identify irregular heart rhythms and to offer timely patient alerts. However, conventional cardiac monitoring systems encounter challenges due to inflexible interfaces and discomfort during prolonged monitoring. In this review article, we address these issues by emphasizing the recent development of the flexible, wearable, and comfortable piezoelectric passive sensor assisted by machine learning technology for diagnosis. This innovative device not only harmonizes with the dynamic mechanical properties of human skin but also facilitates continuous and real-time collection of physiological signals. Addressing identified challenges and constraints, this review provides insights into recent advances in piezoelectric cardiac sensors, from devices to circuit systems. Furthermore, this review delves into the integration of machine learning technologies, showcasing their pivotal role in facilitating continuous and real-time assessment of cardiac status. The synergistic combination of flexible piezoelectric sensor design and machine learning holds substantial potential in automating the detection of cardiac irregularities with minimal human intervention. This transformative approach has the power to revolutionize patient care paradigms.

Highly Effective and Efficient Self-Assembled Multilayer-Based Electrode Passivation for Operationally Stable and Reproducible Electrolyte-Gated Transistor Biosensors

To ensure the operational stability of transistor-based biosensors in aqueous electrolytes during multiple measurements, effective electrode passivation is crucially important for reliable and reproducible device performances. This paper presents a highly effective and efficient electrode passivation method using a facile solution-processed self-assembled multilayer (SAML) with excellent insulation property to achieve operational stability and reproducibility of electrolyte-gated transistor (EGT) biosensors. The SAML is created by the consecutive self-assembly of three different molecular layers of 1,10-decanedithiol, vinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, and 1-octadecanethiol. This passivation enables EGT to operate stably in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) during repeated measurements over multiple cycles without short-circuiting. The SAML-passivated EGT biosensor is fabricated with a solution-processed In2O3 thin film as an amorphous oxide semiconductor working both as a semiconducting channel in the transistor and as a functionalizable biological interface for a bioreceptor. The SAML-passivated EGT including In2O3 thin film is demonstrated for the detection of Tau protein as a biomarker of Alzheimer's disease while employing a Tau-specific DNA aptamer as a bioreceptor and a PBS solution with a low ionic strength to diminish the charge-screening (Debye length) effect. The SAML-passivated EGT biosensor functionalized with the Tau-specific DNA aptamer exhibits ultrasensitive, quantitative, and reliable detection of Tau protein from 1 × 10-15 to 1 × 10-10 M, covering a much larger range than clinical needs, via changes in different transistor parameters. Therefore, the SAML-based passivation method can be effectively and efficiently utilized for operationally stable and reproducible transistor-based biosensors. Furthermore, this presented strategy can be extensively adapted for advanced biomedical devices and bioelectronics in aqueous or physiological environments.

Reactive oxygen species for therapeutic application: Role of piezoelectric materials

This perspective article emphasizes the significant role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in in vivo remedial therapy of various diseases and complications, capitalizing on their potential reactivity. Among the various influencers, herein, piezoelectric materials driven ROS generation activity is primarily considered. Intrinsic non-centrosymmetry of piezoelectric materials makes them suitable for distinct dipole formation in the presence of external mechanical stimuli. Such characteristics prompt the positioning of opposite charged carriers to execute associated redox transformations that effectively participate to generate ROS in the aqueous media of the cell cytoplasm, organelles and nucleus. The immense reactivity of piezoelectric material driven ROS is fostered to terminate cellular toxicity or curtail tumor cell growth, due to their higher specificity. This perspective considers the conjugated performance of piezoelectric materials and ultrasound which can remotely generate electrical charges that promote ROS production for therapeutic application. In particular, a substantial synopsis is provided for the remedial activity of numerous piezocatalytic materials in tumor cell apoptosis, antibacterial treatment, dental care and neurological disorders. Subsequently, the report precisely demonstrates the methods involving various spectrophotometric approaches for the analysis of the ROS. Finally, the key challenges of piezoelectric material-based therapy are discussed and systematic future progress is outlined.

Surface Functional Modification by Ti3 C2 Tx MXene on PLLA Nanofibers for Optimizing Neural Stem Cell Engineering

Optimizing cell substrates by surface modification of neural stem cells (NSCs), for efficient and oriented neurogenesis, represents a promising strategy for treating neurological diseases. However, developing substrates with the advanced surface functionality, conductivity, and biocompatibility required for practical application is still challenging. Here, Ti3 C2 Tx MXene is introduced as a coating nanomaterial for aligned poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) nanofibers (M-ANF) to enhance NSC neurogenesis and simultaneously tailor the cell growth direction. Ti3 C2 Tx MXene treatment provides a superior conductivity substrate with a surface rich in functional groups, hydrophilicity, and roughness, which can provide biochemical and physical cues to support NSC adhesion and proliferation. Moreover, Ti3 C2 Tx MXene coating significantly promotes NSC differentiation into both neurons and astrocytes. Interestingly, Ti3 C2 Tx MXene acts synergistically with the alignment of nanofibers to promote the growth of neurites, indicating enhanced maturation of these neurons. RNA sequencing analysis further reveals the molecular mechanism by which Ti3 C2 Tx MXene modulates the fate of NSCs. Notably, surface modification by Ti3 C2 Tx MXene mitigates the in vivo foreign body response to implanted PLLA nanofibers. This study confirms that Ti3 C2 Tx MXene provides multiple advantages for decorating the aligned PLLA nanofibers to cooperatively improve neural regeneration.

From bedside to portable and wearable: development of a conformable ultrasound patch for deep breast tissue imaging

A breakthrough study from Du et al. has developed a wearable, ultrasound imaging patch for standardized and reproducible breast tissue imaging. The technology utilizes a honeycomb patch design to facilitate guided movement of the ultrasound array, enabling comprehensive, multiangle breast imaging. The system was validated in vitro and in vivo with a single human subject and has the potential for early-stage breast cancer detection. This study addressed the current limitations of wearable ultrasound technologies, including imaging over large, curvilinear organs and integration of superior piezoelectric materials for high-performance ultrasound arrays. The transition of ultrasound from the bedside to portable and wearable devices will pave the way for integration with big data collection, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnosis and personalized ultrasonographic profile generation, for rapid and objective measurements. This advancement is especially important in the context of breast cancer, where early diagnosis and assessment of medical therapy responses are paramount to patient care.

Advantages and Prospective Implications of Smart Materials in Tissue Engineering: Piezoelectric, Shape Memory, and Hydrogels

Conventional biomaterial is frequently used in the biomedical sector for various therapies, imaging, treatment, and theranostic functions. However, their properties are fixed to meet certain applications. Smart materials respond in a controllable and reversible way, modifying some of their properties because of external stimuli. However, protein-based smart materials allow modular protein domains with different functionalities and responsive behaviours to be easily combined. Wherein, these "smart" behaviours can be tuned by amino acid identity and sequence. This review aims to give an insight into the design of smart materials, mainly protein-based piezoelectric materials, shape-memory materials, and hydrogels, as well as highlight the current progress and challenges of protein-based smart materials in tissue engineering. These materials have demonstrated outstanding regeneration of neural, skin, cartilage, bone, and cardiac tissues with great stimuli-responsive properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and biofunctionality.

Dual-Layer All-Textile Flexible Pressure Sensor Coupled by Silver Nanowires with Ti3C2-Mxene for Monitoring Athletic Motion during Sports and Transmitting Information

At present, wearable flexible pressure sensors have broad application prospects in fields such as motion monitoring and information transmission. However, it is still a challenge to design flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity over a large sensing range and simple fabrication. Here, we use a simple "dipping-drying" method to fabricate a fabric-based flexible pressure sensor by coupling silver nanowires (AgNWs) with Ti3C2-MXene. The interaction between MXene and AgNWs helps realize a dual-layer sensing network, achieving good synergistic effects between pressure sensitivity and sensing range. The effects of the material combination and dip-coating sequence on the sensor's performance are systematically studied. The results show that the sensor was impregnated sequentially with AgNWs solution, and the MXene solution has the highest sensitivity (0.168 kPa-1) over a wide range (190 kPa). Meanwhile, it has the advantages of low response hysteresis and detection limit, as well as good linearity and durability. We further demonstrate the application of this sensor in human physiological signal monitoring and motion pattern recognition. It can also encrypt and transmit information according to different pressing states. In addition, the proposed pressure sensor array exhibits spatial resolution detection capabilities, laying the foundation for applications in the fields of motion monitoring and human-computer interaction.

Effective Orthodontic Tooth Movement via an Occlusion-Activated Electromechanical Synergistic Dental Aligner

Malocclusion is a prevalent dental health problem plaguing over 56% worldwide. Mechanical orthodontic aligners render directional teeth movement extensively used for malocclusion treatment in the clinic, while mechanical regulation inefficiency prolongs the treatment course and induces adverse complications. As a noninvasive physiotherapy, an appropriate electric field plays a vital role in tissue metabolism engineering. Here, we propose an occlusion-activated electromechanical synergistic dental aligner that converts occlusal energy into a piezo-excited alternating electric field for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. Within an 18-day intervention, significantly facilitated orthodontic results were obtained from young and aged Sprague-Dawley rats, increasing by 34% and 164% in orthodontic efficiency, respectively. The different efficiencies were attributed to age-distributed periodontal tissue status. Mechanistically, the electromechanical synergistic intervention modulated the microenvironment, enhanced osteoblast and osteoclast activity, promoted alveolar bone metabolism, and ultimately accelerated tooth movement. This work holds excellent potential for personalized and effective treatment for malocclusions, which would vastly reduce the suffering of the long orthodontic course.

Biodegradable Piezoelectric Polymers: Recent Advancements in Materials and Applications

Recent materials, microfabrication, and biotechnology improvements have introduced numerous exciting bioelectronic devices based on piezoelectric materials. There is an intriguing evolution from conventional unrecyclable materials to biodegradable, green, and biocompatible functional materials. As a fundamental electromechanical coupling material in numerous applications, novel piezoelectric materials with a feature of degradability and desired electrical and mechanical properties are being developed for future wearable and implantable bioelectronics. These bioelectronics can be easily integrated with biological systems for applications, including sensing physiological signals, diagnosing medical problems, opening the blood-brain barrier, and stimulating healing or tissue growth. Therefore, the generation of piezoelectricity from natural and synthetic bioresorbable polymers has drawn great attention in the research field. Herein, the significant and recent advancements in biodegradable piezoelectric materials, including natural and synthetic polymers, their principles, advanced applications, and challenges for medical uses, are reviewed thoroughly. The degradation methods of these piezoelectric materials through in vitro and in vivo studies are also investigated. These improvements in biodegradable piezoelectric materials and microsystems could enable new applications in the biomedical field. In the end, potential research opportunities regarding the practical applications are pointed out that might be significant for new materials research.

Perspectives on recent advancements in energy harvesting, sensing and bio-medical applications of piezoelectric gels

The development of next-generation bioelectronics, as well as the powering of consumer and medical devices, require power sources that are soft, flexible, extensible, and even biocompatible. Traditional energy storage devices (typically, batteries and supercapacitors) are rigid, unrecyclable, offer short-lifetime, contain hazardous chemicals and possess poor biocompatibility, hindering their utilization in wearable electronics. Therefore, there is a genuine unmet need for a new generation of innovative energy-harvesting materials that are soft, flexible, bio-compatible, and bio-degradable. Piezoelectric gels or PiezoGels are a smart crystalline form of gels with polar ordered structures that belongs to the broader family of piezoelectric material, which generate electricity in response to mechanical stress or deformation. Given that PiezoGels are structurally similar to hydrogels, they offer several advantages including intrinsic chirality, crystallinity, degree of ordered structures, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, emphasizing their potential applications ranging from power generation to bio-medical applications. Herein, we describe recent examples of new functional PiezoGel materials employed for energy harvesting, sensing, and wound dressing applications. First, this review focuses on the principles of piezoelectric generators (PEGs) and the advantages of using hydrogels as PiezoGels in energy and biomedical applications. Next, we provide a detailed discussion on the preparation, functionalization, and fabrication of PiezoGel-PEGs (P-PEGs) for the applications of energy harvesting, sensing and wound healing/dressing. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion of the current challenges and future directions of P-PEGs.

Current trends in the detection and removal of heavy metal ions using functional materials

The shortage of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution is an acute global issue, which has a great impact on environmental protection and human health. Therefore, the exploitation of new strategies for designing and synthesizing green, efficient, and economical materials for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions is crucial. Among the various methods for the detection and removal of heavy ions, advanced functional systems including nanomaterials, polymers, porous materials, and biomaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past several years due to their capabilities of real-time detection, excellent removal efficiency, anti-interference, quick response, high selectivity, and low limit of detection. In this tutorial review, we review the general design principles underlying the aforementioned functional materials, and in particular highlight the fundamental mechanisms and specific examples of detecting and removing heavy metal ions. Additionally, the methods which enhance water purification quality using these functional materials have been reviewed, also current challenges and opportunities in this exciting field have been highlighted, including the fabrication, subsequent treatment, and potential future applications of such functional materials. We envision that this tutorial review will provide invaluable guidance for the design of functional materials tailored towards the detection and removal of heavy metals, thereby expediting the development of high-performance materials and fostering the development of more efficient approaches to water pollution remediation.

Hydroxyapatite-filled osteoinductive and piezoelectric nanofibers for bone tissue engineering

Osteoporotic-related fractures are among the leading causes of chronic disease morbidity in Europe and in the US. While a significant percentage of fractures can be repaired naturally, in delayed-union and non-union fractures surgical intervention is necessary for proper bone regeneration. Given the current lack of optimized clinical techniques to adequately address this issue, bone tissue engineering (BTE) strategies focusing on the development of scaffolds for temporarily replacing damaged bone and supporting its regeneration process have been gaining interest. The piezoelectric properties of bone, which have an important role in tissue homeostasis and regeneration, have been frequently neglected in the design of BTE scaffolds. Therefore, in this study, we developed novel hydroxyapatite (HAp)-filled osteoinductive and piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanofibers via electrospinning capable of replicating the tissue's fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM) composition and native piezoelectric properties. The developed PVDF-TrFE/HAp nanofibers had biomimetic collagen fibril-like diameters, as well as enhanced piezoelectric and surface properties, which translated into a better capacity to assist the mineralization process and cell proliferation. The biological cues provided by the HAp nanoparticles enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of seeded human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) as observed by the increased ALP activity, cell-secreted calcium deposition and osteogenic gene expression levels observed for the HAp-containing fibers. Overall, our findings describe the potential of combining PVDF-TrFE and HAp for developing electroactive and osteoinductive nanofibers capable of supporting bone tissue regeneration.

Biodegradable Electroactive Nanofibrous Air Filters for Long-Term Respiratory Healthcare and Self-Powered Monitoring

The concept of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based fibrous air filters, in which the electroactive fibers are ready to enhance the electrostatic adsorption by sustainable energy harvesting, is appealing for long-term respiratory protection and in vivo real-time monitoring. This effort discloses a self-reinforcing electroactivity strategy to confer extreme alignment and refinement of the electrospun poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers, significantly facilitating formation of electroactive phases (i.e., β-phase and highly aligned chains and dipoles) and promotion of polarization and electret properties. It endowed the PLA nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) with largely increased surface potential and filtration performance, as exemplified by efficient removal of PM0.3 and PM2.5 (90.68 and 99.82%, respectively) even at the highest airflow capacity of 85 L/min. With high electroactivity and a well-controlled morphology, the PLA NFMs exhibited superior TENG properties triggered by regular respiratory vibrations, enabling 9.21-fold increase of surface potential (-1.43 kV) and nearly 68% increase of PM0.3 capturing (94.3%) compared to those of conventional PLA membranes. The remarkable TENG mechanisms were examined to elaborately monitor the personal respiration characteristics, particularly those triggered large and rapid variations of output voltages like coughing and tachypnea. Featuring desirable biocompatibility and degradability, the self-powered PLA NFMs permit promising applications in the fabrication of ecofriendly air filters toward high-performance purification and intelligent monitoring.

Conformable ultrasound breast patch for deep tissue scanning and imaging

Ultrasound is widely used for tissue imaging such as breast cancer diagnosis; however, fundamental challenges limit its integration with wearable technologies, namely, imaging over large-area curvilinear organs. We introduced a wearable, conformable ultrasound breast patch (cUSBr-Patch) that enables standardized and reproducible image acquisition over the entire breast with less reliance on operator training and applied transducer compression. A nature-inspired honeycomb-shaped patch combined with a phased array is guided by an easy-to-operate tracker that provides for large-area, deep scanning, and multiangle breast imaging capability. The in vitro studies and clinical trials reveal that the array using a piezoelectric crystal [Yb/Bi-Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3] (Yb/Bi-PIN-PMN-PT) exhibits a sufficient contrast resolution (~3 dB) and axial/lateral resolutions of 0.25/1.0 mm at 30 mm depth, allowing the observation of small cysts (~0.3 cm) in the breast. This research develops a first-of-its-kind ultrasound technology for breast tissue scanning and imaging that offers a noninvasive method for tracking real-time dynamic changes of soft tissue.

Fundamental Understanding of Multicellular Triboelectric Nanogenerator with Different Electrical Configurations

The single-cell triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) often produces insufficient energy, leading to the use of a multicellular TENG structure. This work experimented with and simulated a dual-cell TENG with various configurations in parallel and series arrangements. The working principle of charge generation during each phase of a contact-separation cycle was explained through the analysis and comparison of five electrical configurations of a dual-cell TENG. Our observations indicate that measuring the output charge of a TENG provides a more reliable performance comparison. Finally, multicellular TENG with four cells arranged in an X-shape (X-TENG), self-supporting structure is fabricated and further experimented with, validating our conjectures derived from a dual-cell TENG.

Understanding the Role of M13 Bacteriophage Thin Films on a Metallic Nanostructure through a Standard and Dynamic Model

The dynamic and surface manipulation of the M13 bacteriophage via the meeting application demands the creation of a pathway to design efficient applications with high selectivity and responsivity rates. Here, we report the role of the M13 bacteriophage thin film layer that is deposited on an optical nanostructure involving gold nanoparticles/SiO₂/Si, as well as its influence on optical and geometrical properties. The thickness of the M13 bacteriophage layer was controlled by varying either the concentration or humidity exposure levels, and optical studies were conducted. We designed a standard and dynamic model based upon three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D FDTD) simulations that distinguished the respective necessity of each model under variable conditions. As seen in the experiments, the origin of respective peak wavelength positions was addressed in detail with the help of simulations. The importance of the dynamic model was noted when humidity-based experiments were conducted. Upon introducing varied humidity levels, the dynamic model predicted changes in plasmonic properties as a function of changes in NP positioning, gap size, and effective index (this approach agreed with the experiments and simulated results). We believe that this work will provide fundamental insight into understanding and interpreting the geometrical and optical properties of the nanostructures that involve the M13 bacteriophage. By combining such significant plasmonic properties with the numerous benefits of M13 bacteriophage (like low-cost fabrication, multi-wavelength optical characteristics devised from a single structure, reproducibility, reversible characteristics, and surface modification to suit application requirements), it is possible to develop highly efficient integrated plasmonic biomaterial-based sensor nanostructures.

Diagnosis of invasive fungal infections: challenges and recent developments

BACKGROUND

The global burden of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) has shown an upsurge in recent years due to the higher load of immunocompromised patients suffering from various diseases. The role of early and accurate diagnosis in the aggressive containment of the fungal infection at the initial stages becomes crucial thus, preventing the development of a life-threatening situation. With the changing demands of clinical mycology, the field of fungal diagnostics has evolved and come a long way from traditional methods of microscopy and culturing to more advanced non-culture-based tools. With the advent of more powerful approaches such as novel PCR assays, T2 Candida, microfluidic chip technology, next generation sequencing, new generation biosensors, nanotechnology-based tools, artificial intelligence-based models, the face of fungal diagnostics is constantly changing for the better. All these advances have been reviewed here giving the latest update to our readers in the most orderly flow.

A detailed literature survey was conducted by the team followed by data collection, pertinent data extraction, in-depth analysis, and composing the various sub-sections and the final review. The review is unique in its kind as it discusses the advances in molecular methods; advances in serology-based methods; advances in biosensor technology; and advances in machine learning-based models, all under one roof. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no review covering all of these fields (especially biosensor technology and machine learning using artificial intelligence) with relevance to invasive fungal infections.

CONCLUSION

The review will undoubtedly assist in updating the scientific community's understanding of the most recent advancements that are on the horizon and that may be implemented as adjuncts to the traditional diagnostic algorithms.

Snowflake-inspired and blink-driven flexible piezoelectric contact lenses for effective corneal injury repair

The cornea is a tissue susceptible to various injuries and traumas with a complicated cascade repair process, in which conserving its integrity and clarity is critical to restoring visual function. Enhancing the endogenous electric field is recognized as an effective method of accelerating corneal injury repair. However, current equipment limitations and implementation complexities hinder its widespread adoption. Here, we propose a snowflake-inspired, blink-driven flexible piezoelectric contact lens that can convert mechanical blink motions into a unidirectional pulsed electric field for direct application to moderate corneal injury repair. The device is validated on mouse and rabbit models with different relative corneal alkali burn ratios to modulate the microenvironment, alleviate stromal fibrosis, promote orderly epithelial arrangement and differentiation, and restore corneal clarity. Within an 8-day intervention, the corneal clarity of mice and rabbits improves by more than 50%, and the repair rate of mouse and rabbit corneas increases by over 52%. Mechanistically, the device intervention is advantageous in blocking growth factors' signaling pathways specifically involved in stromal fibrosis whilst preserving and harnessing the signaling pathways required for indispensable epithelial metabolism. This work put forward an efficient and orderly corneal therapeutic technology utilizing artificial endogenous-strengthened signals generated by spontaneous body activities.

Highly piezoelectric, biodegradable, and flexible amino acid nanofibers for medical applications

Amino acid crystals are an attractive piezoelectric material as they have an ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficient and have an appealing safety profile for medical implant applications. Unfortunately, solvent-cast films made from glycine crystals are brittle, quickly dissolve in body fluid, and lack crystal orientation control, reducing the overall piezoelectric effect. Here, we present a material processing strategy to create biodegradable, flexible, and piezoelectric nanofibers of glycine crystals embedded inside polycaprolactone (PCL). The glycine-PCL nanofiber film exhibits stable piezoelectric performance with a high ultrasound output of 334 kPa [under 0.15 voltage root-mean-square (Vrms)], which outperforms the state-of-the-art biodegradable transducers. We use this material to fabricate a biodegradable ultrasound transducer for facilitating the delivery of chemotherapeutic drug to the brain. The device remarkably enhances the animal survival time (twofold) in mice-bearing orthotopic glioblastoma models. The piezoelectric glycine-PCL presented here could offer an excellent platform not only for glioblastoma therapy but also for developing medical implantation fields.

Ferroelectret nanogenerators for the development of bioengineering systems

Bioengineering devices and systems will become a practical and versatile technology in society when sustainability issues, primarily pertaining to their efficiency, sustainability, and human-machine interaction, are fully addressed. It has become evident that technological paths should not rely on a single operation mechanism but instead on holistic methodologies that integrate different phenomena and approaches with complementary advantages. As an intriguing invention, the ferroelectret nanogenerator (FENG) has emerged with promising potential in various fields of bioengineering. Utilizing the changes in the engineered macro-scale electric dipoles to create displacement current (and vice versa), FENGs have been demonstrated to be a compelling strategy for bidirectional conversion of energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in integrating FENGs in bioengineering systems, focusing on the applications with the most potential and the underlying current constraints.

A Thorough Investigation of Electronic, Optical, Mechanical, and Thermodynamic Properties of Stable Glasslike Sodium Germanate under Compressive Hydrostatic Pressure: Ab Initio Study

In this paper, we have tried to elucidate the variation of structural, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of glasslike Na₂GeO₃ under compressive isotropic pressure within a framework of density functional theory (DFT). The result shows stable structural (orthorhombic → tetragonal) and electronic (indirect → direct) phase transitions at P ∼ 20 GPa. The electronic band gap transition plays a key role in the enhancement of optical properties. The results of the thermodynamic properties have shown that Na₂GeO₃ follows Debye's low-temperature specific heat law and the classical thermodynamic of the Dulong-Petit law at high temperature. The pressure sensitivity of the electronic properties led us to compute the piezoelectric tensor (both in relaxed and clamped ions). We have observed significant electric responses in the form of a piezoelectric coefficient under applied pressure. This property suggested that Na₂GeO₃ could be a potential material for energy harvest in future energy-efficient devices. As expected, Na₂GeO₃ becomes harder and harder under compressive pressure up to the phase transition pressure (∼20 GPa) which can be read from Pugh's ratio (k_H) > 1.75, however, at pressures above 20 GPa k_H < 1.75, which may be due to the formation of fractures at high pressure.

Piezoelectric Nanomaterials Activated by Ultrasound in Disease Treatment

Electric stimulation has been used in changing the morphology, status, membrane permeability, and life cycle of cells to treat certain diseases such as trauma, degenerative disease, tumor, and infection. To minimize the side effects of invasive electric stimulation, recent studies attempt to apply ultrasound to control the piezoelectric effect of nano piezoelectric material. This method not only generates an electric field but also utilizes the benefits of ultrasound such as non-invasive and mechanical effects. In this review, important elements in the system, piezoelectricity nanomaterial and ultrasound, are first analyzed. Then, we summarize recent studies categorized into five kinds, nervous system diseases treatment, musculoskeletal tissues treatment, cancer treatment, anti-bacteria therapy, and others, to prove two main mechanics under activated piezoelectricity: one is biological change on a cellular level, the other is a piezo-chemical reaction. However, there are still technical problems to be solved and regulation processes to be completed before widespread use. The core problems include how to accurately measure piezoelectricity properties, how to concisely control electricity release through complex energy transfer processes, and a deeper understanding of related bioeffects. If these problems are conquered in the future, piezoelectric nanomaterials activated by ultrasound will provide a new pathway and realize application in disease treatment.

Sonopiezoelectric Nanomedicine and Materdicine

Endogenous electric field is ubiquitous in a multitude of important living activities such as bone repair, cell signal transduction, and nerve regeneration, signifying that regulating the electric field in organisms is highly beneficial to maintain organism health. As an emerging and promising research direction, piezoelectric nanomedicine and materdicine precisely activated by ultrasound with synergetic advantages of deep tissue penetration, remote spatiotemporal selectivity, and mechanical-electrical energy interconversion, have been progressively utilized for disease treatment and tissue repair by participating in the modulation of endogenous electric field. This specific nanomedicine utilizing piezoelectric effect activated by ultrasound is typically regarded as "sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine". This comprehensive review summarizes and discusses the substantially employed sonopiezoelectric nanomaterials and nanotherapies to provide an insight into the internal mechanism of the corresponding biological behavior/effect of sonopiezoelectric biomaterials in versatile disease treatments. This review primarily focuses on the sonopiezoelectric biomaterials for biosensing, drug delivery, tumor therapy, tissue regeneration, antimicrobia, and further illuminates the underlying sonopiezoelectric mechanism. In addition, the challenges and developments/prospects of sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine are analyzed for promoting the further clinical translation. It is earnestly expected that this kind of nanomedicine/biomaterials-enabled sonopiezoelectric technology will provoke the comprehensive investigation and promote the clinical development of the next-generation multifunctional materdicine.

Balloon Catheter-Integrated Piezoelectric Micropyramid Arrays for Measuring Vascular Stiffness

Atherosclerosis is one of the severe cardiovascular diseases in which blood vessels lose elasticity and the lumen narrows. If atherosclerosis worsens, it commonly leads to acute coronary syndrome (ACS) due to the rupture of vulnerable plaque or aortic aneurysm. As the mechanical properties of vascular tissues vary from their conditions, measuring the vascular stiffness of an inner blood vessel wall may be applied to the accurate diagnosis of atherosclerotic symptoms. Therefore, early mechanical detection of vascular stiffness is highly needed for immediate medical attention for ACS. Even with conventional examination methods such as intravascular ultrasonography and optical coherence tomography, several limitations still remain that make it difficult to directly determine the mechanical properties of the vascular tissue. As piezoelectric materials convert mechanical energy to electricity without an external power source, a piezoelectric nanocomposite could be utilized as a balloon catheter-integrated mechanical sensor on its surface. Here, we present piezoelectric nanocomposite micropyramid balloon catheter (p-MPB) arrays for measuring vascular stiffness. We study the structural characterization and feasibility of p-MPB as endovascular sensors by conducting finite element method analyses. Also, multifaceted piezoelectric voltages are measured by compression/release tests, in vitro vascular phantom tests, and ex vivo porcine heart tests to confirm that the p-MPB sensor properly operates in blood vessels.

The fundamentals and applications of piezoelectric materials for tumor therapy: recent advances and outlook

Malignant tumors are one of the main diseases leading to death, and the vigorous development of nanotechnology has opened up new frontiers for antitumor therapy. Currently, researchers are focused on solving the biomedical challenges associated with traditional anti-tumor medical methods, promoting the research and development of nano-drug carriers and new nano-drugs, which brings great hope for improving the curative effect and reducing toxic and side effects. Among the new systems being investigated, piezoelectric nano biomaterials, including ferroelectrics, piezoelectric and pyroelectric materials, have recently received extensive attention for antitumor applications. By coupling force, light, magnetism or heat and electricity, polarized charges are generated in these materials microscopically, forming a piezo-potential and establishing a built-in electric field. Polarized charges can directly act on the materials in the tumor micro-environment and also assist in the separation of carriers and inhibit recombination based on piezoelectric theory and piezoelectric optoelectronic theory. Based on this, piezoelectric materials convert various forms of primary energy (such as light energy, mechanical energy, thermal energy and magnetic energy) from the surrounding environment into secondary energy (such as electrical energy and chemical energy). Herein, we review the basic theory and principles of piezoelectric materials, pyroelectric materials and ferroelectric materials as nanomedicine. Then, we summarize the types of piezoelectric materials reported to date and their wide applications in treatment, imaging, device construction and probe detection in various tumor treatment fields. Based on this, we discuss the relevant characteristics and post-processing strategies of nano piezoelectric biomaterials to obtain the maximum piezoelectric response. Finally, we present the key challenges and future prospects for the development of ferroelectric, piezoelectric and pyroelectric nanomaterial-based nanoagents for efficient energy harvesting and conversion for desirable therapeutic outcomes.

Expedient secondary functions of flexible piezoelectrics for biomedical energy harvesting

Flexible piezoelectrics realise the conversion between mechanical movements and electrical power by conformally attaching onto curvilinear surfaces, which are promising for energy harvesting of biomedical devices due to their sustainable body movements and/or deformations. Developing secondary functions of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters is becoming increasingly significant in recent years via aiming at issues that cannot be addressed or mitigated by merely increasing piezoelectric efficiencies. These issues include loose interfacial contact and pucker generation by stretching, power shortage or instability induced by inadequate mechanical energy, and premature function degeneration or failure caused by fatigue fracture after cyclic deformations. Herein, the expedient secondary functions of flexible piezoelectrics to mitigate above issues are reviewed, including stretchability, hybrid energy harvesting, and self-healing. Efforts have been devoted to understanding the state-of-the-art strategies and their mechanisms of achieving secondary functions based on piezoelectric fundamentals. The link between structural characteristic and function performance is unravelled by providing insights into carefully selected progresses. The remaining challenges of developing secondary functions are proposed in the end with corresponding outlooks. The current work hopes to help and inspire future research in this promising field focusing on developing the secondary functions of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters.

Boosting the Piezoelectric Sensitivity of Amino Acid Crystals by Mechanical Annealing for the Engineering of Fully Degradable Force Sensors

Biodegradable piezoelectric force sensors can be used as implantable medical devices for monitoring physiological pressures of impaired organs or providing essential stimuli for drug delivery and tissue regeneration without the need of additional invasive removal surgery or battery power. However, traditional piezoelectric materials, such as inorganic ceramics and organic polymers, show unsatisfactory degradability, and cytotoxicity. Amino acid crystals are biocompatible and exhibit outstanding piezoelectric properties, but their small crystal size makes it difficult to align the crystals for practical applications. Here, a mechanical-annealing strategy is reported for engineering all-organic biodegradable piezoelectric force sensors using natural amino acid crystals as piezoelectric materials. It is shown that the piezoelectric constant of the mechanical-annealed crystals can reach 12 times that of the single crystal powders. Moreover, mechanical annealing results in flat and smooth surfaces, thus improving the contact of the crystal films with the electrodes and leading to high output voltages of the devices. The packaged force sensors can be used to monitor dynamic motions, including muscle contraction and lung respiration, in vivo for 4 weeks and then gradually degrade without causing obvious inflammation or systemic toxicity. This work provides a way to engineer all-organic and biodegradable force sensors for potential clinical applications.

Centimeter-Sized Piezoelectric Single Crystal of Chiral Bismuth-Based Hybrid Halide with Superior Electrostrictive Coefficient

The lead-free hybrid perovskite piezoelectrics possess advantages of easy processing, light weight, and low-toxicity over inorganic ceramics. However, the lack of understanding in structure-property relationships hinders exploration of new molecular piezoelectric crystals with excellent performances. Herein, by introducing chiral α-phenylethylammonium (α-PEA⁺ ) cations into bismuth-based hybrid halides, centimeter-sized (R-α-PEA)₄ Bi₂ I₁₀ and (S-α-PEA)₄ Bi₂ I₁₀ single crystals with a superior piezoelectric voltage coefficient g₂₂ of 309 mV m N^-1 , are obtained. Structural rigidity in crystals leads to a remarkable electrostrictive coefficient Q₂₂ of 25.8 m⁴ C^-2 , nearly 20 times higher than that of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), which is beneficial to improve piezoelectricity with the synergistic effect of chirality. Moreover, the as-grown crystals show outstanding phase stability from 173 K to ≈470 K. This work suggests a design strategy based on rigidity and chirality to exploit novel piezoelectrics among hybrid metal halides.

Linguistic Analysis Identifies Emergent Biomaterial Fabrication Trends for Orthopaedic Applications

The expanse of publications in tissue engineering (TE) and orthopedic TE (OTE) over the past 20 years presents an opportunity to probe emergent trends in the field to better guide future technologies that can make an impact on musculoskeletal therapies. Leveraging this trove of knowledge, a hierarchical systematic search method and trend analysis using connected network mapping of key terms is developed. Within discrete time intervals, an accelerated publication rate for anatomic orthopedic tissue engineering (AOTE) of osteochondral defects, tendons, menisci, and entheses is identified. Within these growing fields, the top-listed key terms are extracted and stratified into evident categories, such as biomaterials, delivery method, or 3D printing and biofabrication. It is then identified which categories decreased, remained constant, increased, or emerged over time, identifying the specific emergent categories currently driving innovation in orthopedic repair technologies. Together, these data demonstrate a significant convergence of material types and descriptors used across tissue types. From this convergence, design criteria to support future research of anatomic constructs that mimic both the form and function of native tissues are formulated. In summary, this review identifies large-scale trends and predicts new directions in orthopedics that will define future materials and technologies.

Ultrasound nanomedicine and materdicine

The conventional microbubble-based ultrasound biomedicine clinically plays a vital role in providing the dynamic detection of macro and microvasculature and disease theranostics. However, the intrinsic limitation of particle size severely decreases the treatment effectiveness due to their vascular transport characteristics, which promotes the development and application of multifunctional ultrasound-responsive nanomaterials. Herein, we put forward a research field of "ultrasound nanomedicine and materdicine", referring to the interdiscipline of ultrasound, nanobiotechnology and materials, which seeks to produce specific biological effects for addressing the challenges faced and dilemma of conventional ultrasound medicine. We comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art scientific advances in the latest progress in constructing ultrasound-based platforms and ultrasound-activated sonosensitizers, ranging from the synthesis strategies, biological functions to ultrasound-triggered therapeutic applications. Ultimately, the unresolved challenges and clinical-translation potentials of ultrasound nanomedicine and materdicine are discussed and prospected in this evolving field.

Recent Progress of Biomaterials-Based Epidermal Electronics for Healthcare Monitoring and Human-Machine Interaction

Epidermal electronics offer an important platform for various on-skin applications including electrophysiological signals monitoring and human-machine interactions (HMI), due to their unique advantages of intrinsic softness and conformal interfaces with skin. The widely used nondegradable synthetic materials may produce massive electronic waste to the ecosystem and bring safety issues to human skin. However, biomaterials extracted from nature are promising to act as a substitute material for the construction of epidermal electronics, owing to their diverse characteristics of biocompatibility, biodegradability, sustainability, low cost and natural abundance. Therefore, the development of natural biomaterials holds great prospects for advancement of high-performance sustainable epidermal electronics. Here, we review the recent development on different types of biomaterials including proteins and polysaccharides for multifunctional epidermal electronics. Subsequently, the applications of biomaterials-based epidermal electronics in electrophysiological monitoring and HMI are discussed, respectively. Finally, the development situation and future prospects of biomaterials-based epidermal electronics are summarized. We expect that this review can provide some inspirations for the development of future, sustainable, biomaterials-based epidermal electronics.

Pencil-Drawn Generator Built-in Actuator for Integrated Self-Powered/Visual Dual-Mode Sensing Functions and Rewritable Display

Multifunctionality is important to the development of next-generation actuators and intelligent robots. However, current multi-functional actuating systems are achieved based on the integration of diverse functional units with complex design, especially lacking in multi-mode sensing and displaying functions. Herein, a light-driven actuator integrated with self-powered/visual dual-mode sensing functions and rewritable display function is proposed. The actuator demonstrates a bending curvature of 0.93 cm-1 under near-infrared light irradiation. Meanwhile, by embedding a pencil-drawn graphite generator and thermochromic materials, the actuator also provides two independent sensing functions. First, owing to the photo-thermoelectric effect of graphite, the actuator spontaneously outputs a self-powered voltage (Seebeck coefficient: 23 µV K-1 ), which can reflect the deformation trend of actuator. Second, color changes occur on the actuator during deformation, which provide a visual sensing due to the thermochromic property. Furthermore, the actuator can be utilized as a rewritable display, owing to the integrated color-memorizing component. Intelligent robots, switches, and smart homes are further demonstrated as applications. All of them can spontaneously provide self-powered and visual sensing signals to demonstrate the working states of actuating systems, accompanied by rewritable displays on the actuators. This study will open a new direction for self-powered devices, multi-functional actuators, and intelligent robots.

A Comprehensive Review on Barium Titanate Nanoparticles as a Persuasive Piezoelectric Material for Biomedical Applications: Prospects and Challenges

Stimulation of cells with electrical cues is an imperative approach to interact with biological systems and has been exploited in clinical practices over a wide range of pathological ailments. This bioelectric interface has been extensively explored with the help of piezoelectric materials, leading to remarkable advancement in the past two decades. Among other members of this fraternity, colloidal perovskite barium titanate (BaTiO₃ ) has gained substantial interest due to its noteworthy properties which includes high dielectric constant and excellent ferroelectric properties along with acceptable biocompatibility. Significant progression is witnessed for BaTiO₃ nanoparticles (BaTiO₃ NPs) as potent candidates for biomedical applications and in wearable bioelectronics, making them a promising personal healthcare platform. The current review highlights the nanostructured piezoelectric bio interface of BaTiO₃ NPs in applications comprising drug delivery, tissue engineering, bioimaging, bioelectronics, and wearable devices. Particular attention has been dedicated toward the fabrication routes of BaTiO₃ NPs along with different approaches for its surface modifications. This review offers a comprehensive discussion on the utility of BaTiO₃ NPs as active devices rather than passive structural unit behaving as carriers for biomolecules. The employment of BaTiO₃ NPs presents new scenarios and opportunity in the vast field of nanomedicines for biomedical applications.

Piezoelectric Bioactive Glasses Composite Promotes Angiogenesis by the Synergistic Effect of Wireless Electrical Stimulation and Active Ions

Insufficient angiogenesis frequently occurs after the implantation of orthopedic materials, which greatly increases the risk of bone defect reconstruction failure. Therefore, the development of bone implant with improved angiogenic properties is of great importance. Mimicking the extracellular matrix clues provides a more direct and effective strategy to modulate angiogenesis. Herein, inspired by the bioelectrical characteristics of the bone microenvironment, a piezoelectric bioactive glasses composite (P-KNN/BG) based on the incorporation of polarized potassium sodium niobate is constructed, which could effectively promote angiogenesis. It is found that P-KNN/BG has exceptional wireless electrical stimulation performance and sustained active ions release. In vitro cell experiments reveal that P-KNN/BG enhances endothelial cell adhesion, migration, and differentiation via activating the eNOS/NO signaling pathway, which might be contributed to cell membrane hyperpolarization induced by wireless electrical stimulation increase the influx of active ions into the cells. In vivo chick chorioallantoic membrane experiment demonstrates that P-KNN/BG shows excellent pro-angiogenic capacity and biocompatibility. This work broadens the current understanding of bioactive materials with bionic electrical properties, which brings new insights into the clinical treatment of bone defect repair.

A review of piezoelectric MEMS sensors and actuators for gas detection application

Piezoelectric microelectromechanical system (piezo-MEMS)-based mass sensors including the piezoelectric microcantilevers, surface acoustic waves (SAW), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT), and film bulk acoustic wave resonators (FBAR) are highlighted as suitable candidates for highly sensitive gas detection application. This paper presents the piezo-MEMS gas sensors' characteristics such as their miniaturized structure, the capability of integration with readout circuit, and fabrication feasibility using multiuser technologies. The development of the piezoelectric MEMS gas sensors is investigated for the application of low-level concentration gas molecules detection. In this work, the various types of gas sensors based on piezoelectricity are investigated extensively including their operating principle, besides their material parameters as well as the critical design parameters, the device structures, and their sensing materials including the polymers, carbon, metal-organic framework, and graphene.

Low-temperature processing of screen-printed piezoelectric KNbO3 with integration onto biodegradable paper substrates

The development of fully solution-processed, biodegradable piezoelectrics is a critical step in the development of green electronics towards the worldwide reduction of harmful electronic waste. However, recent printing processes for piezoelectrics are hindered by the high sintering temperatures required for conventional perovskite fabrication techniques. Thus, a process was developed to manufacture lead-free printed piezoelectric devices at low temperatures to enable integration with eco-friendly substrates and electrodes. A printable ink was developed for screen printing potassium niobate (KNbO₃) piezoelectric layers in microns of thickness at a maximum processing temperature of 120 °C with high reproducibility. Characteristic parallel plate capacitor and cantilever devices were designed and manufactured to assess the quality of this ink and evaluate its physical, dielectric, and piezoelectric characteristics; including a comparison of behaviour between conventional silicon and biodegradable paper substrates. The printed layers were 10.7-11.2 μm thick, with acceptable surface roughness values in the range of 0.4-1.1 μm. The relative permittivity of the piezoelectric layer was 29.3. The poling parameters were optimised for the piezoelectric response, with an average longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient for samples printed on paper substrates measured as d _{33, eff, paper}  = 13.57 ± 2.84 pC/N; the largest measured value was 18.37 pC/N on paper substrates. This approach to printable biodegradable piezoelectrics opens the way forward for fully solution-processed green piezoelectric devices.

Wearable Sensors and Smart Devices to Monitor Rehabilitation Parameters and Sports Performance: An Overview

A quantitative evaluation of kinetic parameters, the joint's range of motion, heart rate, and breathing rate, can be employed in sports performance tracking and rehabilitation monitoring following injuries or surgical operations. However, many of the current detection systems are expensive and designed for clinical use, requiring the presence of a physician and medical staff to assist users in the device's positioning and measurements. The goal of wearable sensors is to overcome the limitations of current devices, enabling the acquisition of a user's vital signs directly from the body in an accurate and non-invasive way. In sports activities, wearable sensors allow athletes to monitor performance and body movements objectively, going beyond the coach's subjective evaluation limits. The main goal of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of wearable technologies and sensing systems to detect and monitor the physiological parameters of patients during post-operative rehabilitation and athletes' training, and to present evidence that supports the efficacy of this technology for healthcare applications. First, a classification of the human physiological parameters acquired from the human body by sensors attached to sensitive skin locations or worn as a part of garments is introduced, carrying important feedback on the user's health status. Then, a detailed description of the electromechanical transduction mechanisms allows a comparison of the technologies used in wearable applications to monitor sports and rehabilitation activities. This paves the way for an analysis of wearable technologies, providing a comprehensive comparison of the current state of the art of available sensors and systems. Comparative and statistical analyses are provided to point out useful insights for defining the best technologies and solutions for monitoring body movements. Lastly, the presented review is compared with similar ones reported in the literature to highlight its strengths and novelties.

Piezocatalytic Medicine: An Emerging Frontier using Piezoelectric Materials for Biomedical Applications

Emerging piezocatalysts have demonstrated their remarkable application potential in diverse medical fields. In addition to their ultrahigh catalytic activities, their inherent and unique charge-carrier-releasing properties can be used to initiate various redox catalytic reactions, displaying bright prospects for future medical applications. Triggered by mechanical energy, piezocatalytic materials can release electrons/holes, catalyze redox reactions of substrates, or intervene in biological processes to promote the production of effector molecules for medical purposes, such as decontamination, sterilization, and therapy. Such a medical application of piezocatalysis is termed as piezocatalytic medicine (PCM) herein. To pioneer novel medical technologies, especially therapeutic modalities, this review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research progress in piezocatalytic medicine. First, the principle of piezocatalysis and the preparation methodologies of piezoelectric materials are introduced. Then, a comprehensive summary of the medical applications of piezocatalytic materials in tumor treatment, antisepsis, organic degradation, tissue repair and regeneration, and biosensing is provided. Finally, the main challenges and future perspectives in piezocatalytic medicine are discussed and proposed, expecting to fuel the development of this emerging scientific discipline.

Soft, Super-Elastic, All-Polymer Piezoelectric Elastomer for Artificial Electronic Skin

Piezoelectric sensors are widely used in wearable devices to mimic the functions of human skin. However, it is considerably challenging to develop soft piezoelectric materials that can exhibit high sensitivity, stretchability, super elasticity, and suitable modulus. In this study, a soft skin-like piezoelectric polymer elastomer composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and a novel elastic substrate polyacrylonitrile is prepared by combining the radical polymerization and freeze-drying processes. Dipole-dipole interaction results in the phase transition of PVDF (α phase to β phase), which enhances the electrical and mechanical performances. Thus, we achieve a high piezoelectric coefficient (d_33max = 63 pC/N), good stretchability (211.3-259.3%), super compressibility (subjected to 99% compression strain without cracking), and super elasticity (100% recovery after extreme compression) simultaneously for the elastomer. The soft composite elastomer produces excellent electrical signal output (V_ocmax = 253 mV) and responds rapidly (15 ms) to stress-induced polarization effects. In addition, the elastomer-based sensor accurately detects various physiological signals such as gestures, throat vibrations, and pulse waves. The developed elastomers exhibit excellent mechanical properties and high sensitivity, which helps facilitate their application as artificial electronic skin to sense subtle external pressure in real time.
