Applications of Graphene in Five Senses, Nervous System, and Artificial Muscles

Graphene remains of great interest in biomedical applications because of biocompatibility. Diseases relating to human senses interfere with life satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, the restoration by artificial organs or sensory devices may bring a bright future by the recovery of senses in patients. In this review, we update the most recent progress in graphene based sensors for mimicking human senses such as artificial retina for image sensors, artificial eardrums, gas sensors, chemical sensors, and tactile sensors. The brain-like processors are discussed based on conventional transistors as well as memristor related neuromorphic computing. The brain-machine interface is introduced for providing a single pathway. Besides, the artificial muscles based on graphene are summarized in the means of actuators in order to react to the physical world. Future opportunities remain for elevating the performances of human-like sensors and their clinical applications.

Controllable Preparation of Highly Crystalline Sulfur-Doped Π-Conjugated Polyimide Hollow Nanoshell for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

In this study, a series of highly crystalline π-conjugated polyimide photocatalysts with porous nano hollow shell (HSPI) was prepared for the first time by the hard template method by adjusting the addition ratio of the template precursor. SiO₂ nanospheres not only serve as template agents but also as dispersants to make precursors of SPI more uniform, and the degree of polymerization will be better, resulting in significantly enhanced crystallinity of HSPI relative to bulk SPI (BSPI). More strikingly, it is found that HSPI has a larger specific surface area, stronger visible light absorption, and higher separation efficiency of photogenerated electron and hole pairs compared with BSPI by various spectral means characterization analysis. These favorable factors significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) by HSPI. This work provides a promising approach for the preparation of cheap, efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable photocatalysts.

Stabilization and Performance Enhancement Strategies for Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Solar-energy-powered photocatalytic fuel production and chemical synthesis are widely recognized as viable technological solutions for a sustainable energy future. However, the requirement of high-performance photocatalysts is a major bottleneck. Halide perovskites, a category of diversified semiconductor materials with suitable energy-band-enabled high-light-utilization efficiencies, exceptionally long charge-carrier-diffusion-length-facilitated charge transport, and readily tailorable compositional, structural, and morphological properties, have emerged as a new class of photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution, CO₂ reduction, and various organic synthesis reactions. Despite the noticeable progress, the development of high-performance halide perovskite photocatalysts (HPPs) is still hindered by several key challenges: the strong ionic nature and high hydrolysis tendency induce instability and an unsatisfactory activity due to the need for a coactive component to realize redox processes. Herein, the recently developed advanced strategies to enhance the stability and photocatalytic activity of HPPs are comprehensively reviewed. The widely applicable stability enhancement strategies are first articulated, and the activity improvement strategies for fuel production and chemical synthesis are then explored. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives associated with the application of HPPs in efficient production of fuels and value-added chemicals are presented, indicating the irreplaceable role of the HPPs in the field of photocatalysis.

Nanoarchitecture of a Two-Dimensional Few-Layer Graphene Oxide/π-Conjugated Polyimide Composite for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

A novel two-dimensional graphene oxide/sulfur-doped polyimide (GO/SPI) hybrid polymer photocatalyst was synthesized by a facile ultrasonic chemical method. The characterization results showed that the skeleton structure of SPI was not changed when the few layers of GO were wrapped on the surface. Due to the excellent charge transport characteristics of GO and the strong π-π stacking interaction between two-dimensional GO and SPI, the photogenerated carrier transport capability of the GO/SPI composites was significantly enhanced compared with that of SPI. The efficient transmission and separation of photogenerated charge carriers significantly improve the photocatalytic degradation of the methyl orange activity of the GO/SPI composite. This work provides a facile and new way for the synthesis of metal-free inorganic-organic composite photocatalysts with high efficiency and low cost.

A review: studying the effect of graphene nanoparticles on mechanical, physical and thermal properties of polylactic acid polymer

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a linear aliphatic polyester thermoplastic made from renewable sources such as sugar beet and cornstarch. Methods of preparation of polylactic acid are biological and chemical. The advantages of polylactic acid are biocompatibility, easily processing, low energy loss, transparency, high strength, resistance to water and fat penetration and low consumption of carbon dioxide during production. However, polylactic acid has disadvantages such as hydrophobicity, fragility at room temperature, low thermal resistance, slow degradation rate, permeability to gases, lack of active groups and chemical neutrality. To overcome the limitations of PLA, such as low thermal stability and inability to absorb gases, nanoparticles such as graphene are added to improve its properties. Extensive research has been done on the introduction of graphene nanoparticles in PLA, and all of these studies have been studied. In this study, we intend to study a comprehensive study of the effect of graphene nanoparticles on the mechanical, thermal, structural and rheological properties of PLA/Gr nanocomposites and also the effect of UV rays on the mechanical properties of PLA/Gr nanocomposites.

Linkage-Affected Donor–Acceptor Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

The depletion of traditional fossil energy and the resulting environmental pollution forces people to explore new energy sources. Direct use of solar energy is now a viable solution for solving these problems. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a porous crystalline material; their well-defined two-dimensional or three-dimensional frameworks can ensure the orderly arrangement of photoelectric active units, giving them potential photoelectric conversion applications. The tunable structural features endow COFs many advantages in photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light. This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress on photoelectronic donor–acceptor (D-A) COFs with tunable structure for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and will provide a feasible guiding strategy for applying this type of COFs in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy investigation into the electron transfer mechanism in photocatalysis

Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) is a powerful technique for monitoring the electron transfer kinetics in photocatalysis. Several important works have successfully elucidated the electron transfer mechanism in heterojunction photocatalysts (HPs) using fs-TAS measurements, and thus a timely summary of recent advances is essential. This feature article starts with a thorough interpretation of the operating principle of fs-TAS equipment, and the fundamentals of the fs-TAS spectra. Subsequently, the applications of fs-TAS in analyzing the dynamics of photogenerated carriers in semiconductor/metal HPs, semiconductor/carbon HPs, semiconductor/semiconductor HPs, and multicomponent HPs are discussed in sequence. Finally, the significance of fs-TAS in revealing the ultrafast interfacial electron transfer process in HPs is summarized, and further research on the applications of fs-TAS in photocatalysis is proposed. This feature article will provide deep insight into the mechanism of the enhanced photocatalytic performance of HPs from the perspective of electron transfer kinetics.

Progression of Quantum Dots Confined Polymeric Systems for Sensorics

The substantial fluorescence (FL) capabilities, exceptional photophysical qualities, and long-term colloidal stability of quantum dots (QDs) have aroused a lot of interest in recent years. QDs have strong and wide optical absorption, good chemical stability, quick transfer characteristics, and facile customization. Adding polymeric materials to QDs improves their effectiveness. QDs/polymer hybrids have implications in sensors, photonics, transistors, pharmaceutical transport, and other domains. There are a great number of review articles available online discussing the creation of CDs and their many uses. There are certain review papers that can be found online that describe the creation of composites as well as their many different uses. For QDs/polymer hybrids, the emission spectra were nearly equal to those of QDs, indicating that the optical characteristics of QDs were substantially preserved. They performed well as biochemical and biophysical detectors/sensors for a variety of targets because of their FL quenching efficacy. This article concludes by discussing the difficulties that still need to be overcome as well as the outlook for the future of QDs/polymer hybrids.

Anchoring Co3O4 nanoparticles on conjugated polyimide ultrathin nanosheets: construction of a Z-scheme nano-heterostructure for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Efficient utilization of solar energy for photocatalytic hydrogen production and degradation of organic pollutants is one of the most promising approaches to solve the energy shortage and environmental pollution. A series of Co₃O₄/sulfur-doped polyimide (CO/SPI) direct Z-scheme nano-heterostructure photocatalysts was successfully prepared via a facile green thermal treatment method. The effects of Co₃O₄ nanoparticles on the structure, morphology, and optoelectronic properties of CO/SPI composite samples were systematically characterized by different spectroscopic methods. Characterization results confirmed that Co₃O₄ nanoparticles as an acid oxide catalyst promoted the oxidation stripping of bulk SPI to form SPI ultrathin nanosheets. Thus, the Co₃O₄ nanoparticles were firmly embedded on SPI ultrathin nanosheets to construct a direct Z-type CO/SPI nanostructure junction. Therefore, the activity and cycle stability of photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production and organic pollutant degradation were greatly improved under solar light irradiation. In particular, the 0.5CO/SPI composite sample displayed the highest activity with an average production rate of 127.2 μmol g^-1 h^-1, which is nearly 13 times and 106 times higher than that of SPI and Co₃O₄. This work provides a new avenue for constructing efficient inorganic-organic nanoheterostructured Z-type photocatalysts and takes an important step towards the efficient utilization of renewable energy.

Ultrafine oxygenophilic nanoalloys induced by multifunctional interstitial boron for methanol oxidation reaction

Interface construction is one of the most feasible approaches to optimize the physical and chemical properties of noble metal-based catalysts and consequently improve their catalytic performance. Herein, the design of effective reaction interfaces by bimetallic, trimetallic or polymetallic alloying has been extensively explored. In this research, metalloid boron (B) was alloyed within palladium-iridium (Pd-Ir) nanoalloy supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) to promote the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media. Being benefited from this, the optimum Pd7IrBx/NG catalyst exhibited enhanced EOR activity mass activity (1141.7 mA mg-1) and long-term stability (58.2 % current density retention rate after 500 cycles of cyclic voltammetry). The mechanism was further studied by electrochemical experiments and characterization, which highlighted that the multifunctional effect of electronic effect and strain effect and kinetic optimization induced by boron doping played a very positive role on MOR.

Advancing charge carriers separation and transformation by nitrogen self-doped hollow nanotubes g-C3N4 for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

The rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, low utilization of visible light and weak oxidation capacity significantly limit the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic pollutants. Doping is used as a conventional strategy for regulating the electronic structure of photocatalysts to obtain a wider light absorption, but also suffers from the problems of reduced charge mobility and oxidation capacity, which is not conducive to photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. To address this issue, a nitrogen self-doped hollow nanotubes g-C₃N₄ (N-PCN) was synthesized by synergistic self-doping and quantum confinement effects. The N-PCN exhibits excellent efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of TC compared to the pristine g-C₃N₄. The synthesized N-PCN has a more positive conduction band minimum and can generate more photogenerated electrons to reduce oxygen to superoxide radicals. In addition, experimental and theoretical evidence shows that N-self-doping not only suppresses the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers but also facilitates the adsorption of oxygen molecules. Consequently, more superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen are generated through oxygen activation process.

Constructing NCuS Interface Chemical Bonds over SnS2 for Efficient Solar-Driven Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

The restricted charge transfer and slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) dynamics tremendously hamper the realistic implementation of SnS₂ photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, a novel strategy is developed to construct interfacial NCuS bonds between NC skeletons and SnS₂ (CuNC@SnS₂ ) for efficient PEC water splitting. Compared with SnS₂ , the PEC activity of CuNC@SnS₂ photoelectrode is tremendously heightened, obtaining a current density of 3.40 mA cm² at 1.23 V_RHE with a negatively shifted onset potential of 0.04 V_RHE , which is 6.54 times higher than that of SnS₂ . The detailed experimental characterizations and theoretical calculation demonstrate that the interfacial NCuS bonds enhance the OER kinetic, reduce the surface overpotential, facilitate the separation of photon-generated carriers, and provide a fast transmission channel for electrons. This work presents a new approach for modulating charge transfer by interfacial bond design in heterojunction photoelectrodes toward promoting PEC performance and solar energy application.

First-Principles Investigation of Adsorption Behaviors and Electronic, Optical, and Gas-Sensing Properties of Pure and Pd-Decorated GeS2 Monolayers

The extensive applications of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal disulfides in gas sensing prompt us to explore the adsorption, electronic, optical, and gas-sensing properties of the pure and Pd-decorated GeS₂ monolayers interacting with NO₂, NO, CO₂, CO, SO₂, NH₃, H₂S, HCN, HF, CH₄, N₂, and H₂ gases by using first-principles methods. Our results showed that the pure GeS₂ monolayer is not appropriate to develop gas sensors. The stability of the Pd-decorated GeS₂ (Pd-GeS₂) monolayer was determined by binding energy, transition state theory, and molecular dynamics simulations, and the Pd decoration has a significant effect on adsorption strength and the change in electronic properties (especially electrical conductivity). The Pd-GeS₂ monolayer-based sensor has relatively high sensitivity toward NO and NO₂ gases with moderate recovery time. In addition, the adsorption of NO and NO₂ can conspicuously change the optical properties of the Pd-GeS₂ monolayer. Therefore, the Pd-GeS₂ monolayer is predicted to be reusable and a highly sensitive (optical) gas sensing material for the detection of NO and NO₂.

Membranes prepared from graphene-based nanomaterials for water purification: a mini-review

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBnMs) are currently regarded as a critical building block for the fabrication of membranes for water purification due to their advantageous properties such as easy surface modification of functional groups, adjustable interlayer pore channels for solvent transportation, robust mechanical properties, and superior photothermal capabilities. By combining graphene derivatives with other emerging materials, heteroatom doping and rational design of a three-dimensional network can enhance water transportation and evaporation rates through channels of GBnM laminates and such layered structures have been applied in various water purification technologies. Herein, this mini-review summarizes recent progress in the synthesis of GBnMs and their applications in water treatment technologies, specifically, nanofiltration (NF) and solar desalination (SD). Finally, personal perspectives on the challenges and future directions of this promising nanomaterial are also provided.

Multiconfiguration b-AsP-based doping systems with enriched elements (C and O): novel materials for spintronic devices

Black arsenical phosphorus (b-AsP), a derivative of black phosphorus, is a bimetallic alloy compound with the advantage of high carrier mobility, high stability, and tailorable configuration. However, lack of an effective tool to facilitate the application of AsP as a magnetic device. Herein, band gap modulation and the introduction of magnetism can be achieved by doping non-metallic atoms in three different AsP configurations. And the doping of the same atom will cause variation in the electronic structure depending on the configuration. Surprisingly, doping with both enriched elements C and O transforms AsP into a magnetic material. Furthermore, the source of the magnetic moment is explained by solving the wave function of the doped AsP, which is caused by the orbital coupling of the C and O atoms to AsP. To excavate the potentials of this magnetic AsP system for magnetic devices, field-effect transistors based on two doped armchair AsP3 nanoribbons are simulated. The devices show considerable negative differential conductivity effect and good spin filtering efficiency. These findings suggest that AsP doping with enriched elements C and O could be an excellent candidate for future spintronics applications.

Research Progress on Graphite-Derived Materials for Electrocatalysis in Energy Conversion and Storage

High-performance electrocatalysts are critical to support emerging electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. Graphite-derived materials, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts and electrocatalyst supports for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR). Effective modification/functionalization of graphite-derived materials can promote higher electrocatalytic activity, stability, and durability. In this review, the mechanisms and evaluation parameters for the above-outlined electrochemical reactions are introduced first. Then, we emphasize the preparation methods for graphite-derived materials and modification strategies. We further highlight the importance of the structural changes of modified graphite-derived materials on electrocatalytic activity and stability. Finally, future directions and perspectives towards new and better graphite-derived materials are presented.

Enhanced Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants via a ZIF-67-Derived Co-N Codoped Carbon Matrix Catalyst

Stable and efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has been achieved via a ZIF-67-derived Co-embedded N-doped nanoporous carbon material catalyst (Co-N/C). The catalyst features a well-distributed structure, suitable specific surface area, and more active sites according to the various characterization analyses. The photocatalytic activity of Co-N/C was evaluated by the degradation of the target pollutant Rhodamine B (RhB). As a result, RhB could establish an adsorption-desorption equilibrium in the dark within 30 min and was thoroughly degraded into H2O and CO2 by Co-N/C under 500 W visible light irradiation in 40 min. Moreover, radical-quenching experiments and reactive oxygen species monitoring were performed to further probe the plausible photodegradation mechanism of RhB. Co-N/C is also appropriate for other alternative dyes and antibiotics affording ideal removal efficiencies. After the reaction, Co-N/C could be facilely separated by an external magnetic field and reused for eight reaction cycles without obvious deactivation of its photocatalytic properties. This study is expected to provide an instructive guideline for the design of efficient and recyclable composite photocatalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks for a broad range of environmental remediation processes.

Graphene Synthesis Techniques and Environmental Applications

Graphene is fundamentally a two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics. It has a versatile surface chemistry and large surface area. It is a carbon nanomaterial, which comprises sp² hybridized carbon atoms placed in a hexagonal lattice with one-atom thickness, giving it a two-dimensional structure. A large number of synthesis techniques including epitaxial growth, liquid phase exfoliation, electrochemical exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, and chemical vapor deposition are used for the synthesis of graphene. Graphene prepared using different techniques can have a number of benefits and deficiencies depending on its application. This study provides a summary of graphene preparation techniques and critically assesses the use of graphene, its derivates, and composites in environmental applications. These applications include the use of graphene as membrane material for the detoxication and purification of water, active material for gas sensing, heavy metal ions detection, and CO₂ conversion. Furthermore, a trend analysis of both synthesis techniques and environmental applications of graphene has been performed by extracting and analyzing Scopus data from the past ten years. Finally, conclusions and outlook are provided to address the residual challenges related to the synthesis of the material and its use for environmental applications.

Efficient degradation of alkyl imidazole ionic liquids in simulated sunlight irradiated periodate system: Kinetics, reaction mechanisms, and toxicity evolution

As a class of emerging aquatic pollutants, alkylimidazole-based ionic liquids (AM-ILs) have received extensive attention due to the large acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Therefore, in order to protect both aquatic organisms and human beings, it is necessary to seek an efficient and environmental-friendly technology for removal of AM-ILs from water bodies. In this work, we found that under simulated sunlight (Xe lamp) irradiation, periodate (KIO₄, PI) could efficiently degrade 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide ([HMMIm]Br), a representative AM-ILs with six carbon atoms in the side chain. Kinetics experiments on the degradation of [HMMIm]Br were performed, and the results showed that a high degradation efficiency (≥90.00%) of the cation ([HMMIm]⁺) was still maintained under harsh water conditions of strong acidity/alkaliny or with various non-target inorganic ions. More importantly, the anion of bromide ion (Br^-) was not oxidized to the carcinogenic bromate (BrO₃^-) in current reaction system. The excited stated PI (marked as PI*) was detected by Laser flash photolysis, and it was an important reactive species for [HMMIm]⁺ degradation. As rationalized by theoretical calculations and scavenging experiments, the main oxidation mechanisms of [HMMIm]⁺ were hydroxyl radicals induced substitution reaction, PI* initiated electron and double oxygen transfer, and direct photolysis mediated chemical bond cleavage reaction, which contributed to 73%, 21%, and 6% of [HMMIm]⁺ degradation, respectively. Moreover, toxicity evaluation by ECOSAR software indicated that the oxidation products were generally less toxic to three aquatic organisms (fish, water flea, and green algae) than the target molecule [HMMIm]Br. In conclusion, this work proposed novel oxidation mechanisms of sunlight-activated PI system, and the findings may inspire further researches on the application of photoactivated hypervalent acids in water purification.

Molybdenum Carbide-Based Photocatalysts: Synthesis, Functionalization, and Applications

As an effective non-noble, molybdenum carbide (Mo_xC: MoC or Mo₂C) has attracted extensive attention and is regarded as a promising research area in the near future owing to its good biocompatibility, high stability, band gap adjustability, rich valence states, and excellent catalytic activity. This Perspective summarizes the recent progress and achievements for the molybdenum carbide-based catalysts. First, the crystal and band structures of molybdenum carbides are generally presented. Second, various modifying strategies for molybdenum carbides are outlined to enhance the photocatalytic performance, including doping engineering, vacancy engineering, morphology and structure engineering, and the establishment of molybdenum carbide-based composite catalysts. Finally, potential applications in the photocatalysis area of molybdenum carbide-based photocatalyst are generalized. Future development trends and perspective for this promising material are also discussed.

Capture and detection of Escherichia coli with graphene aerogels

Some pathogenic bacteria may cause serious food poisoning as well as catastrophic infections. Thus, it is critical to identify bacteria using simple, quick, and sensitive methods. Herein, we fabricate a graphene aerogel-based biosensing system to capture and detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) with high specificity and sensitivity. A graphene aerogel is prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method without any reducing reagent. With the help of E. coli antibodies and the graphene foam with a porous structure, E. coli can be captured using the detection substrate with high specificity and selectivity. The electrical resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results of the graphene aerogel foam changed with high sensitivity during E. coli adhesion. Moreover, the resistance change of the graphene device can still be observed when the E. coli concentration was as low as 10 cfu mL^-1, while there is no obvious resistance change in the use of Staphylococcus aureus. The subsequent EIS test also found that the charge transfer resistance (R_ct) of the detection substrate gradually increased during the E. coli capture process. This nanoelectronic biosensor is simple, quick, safe, and very sensitive, and it may be used as a high-throughput platform for pathogenic bacterial detection, bacterial research, and antimicrobial drug screening.

Reductive Carbon-Carbon Coupling on Metal Sites Regulates Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction in Water Using ZnSe Quantum Dots

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) consisting of precious-metal-free elements show attractive potentials towards solar-driven CO₂ reduction. However, the inhibition of hydrogen (H₂ ) production in aqueous solution remains a challenge. Here, we describe the first example of a carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling reaction to block the competing H₂ evolution in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction in water. In a specific system taking ZnSe QDs as photocatalysts, the introduction of furfural can significantly suppress H₂ evolution leading to CO evolution with a rate of ≈5.3 mmol g^-1  h^-1 and a turnover number (TON) of >7500 under 24 h visible light. Meanwhile, furfural is upgraded to the self-coupling product with a yield of 99.8 % based on the consumption of furfural. Mechanistic insights show that the reductive furfural coupling reaction occurs on surface Zn-sites to consume electrons and protons originally used for H₂ production, while the CO formation pathway at surface anion vacancies from CO₂ remains.

Laser Processing of Flexible In-Plane Micro-supercapacitors: Progresses in Advanced Manufacturing of Nanostructured Electrodes

Flexible in-plane architecture micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) are competitive candidates for on-chip miniature energy storage applications owing to their light weight, small size, high flexibility, as well as the advantages of short charging time, high power density, and long cycle life. However, tedious and time-consuming processes are required for the manufacturing of high-resolution interdigital electrodes using conventional approaches. In contrast, the laser processing technique enables high-efficiency high-precision patterning and advanced manufacturing of nanostructured electrodes. In this review, the recent advances in laser manufacturing and patterning of nanostructured electrodes for applications in flexible in-plane MSCs are comprehensively summarized. Various laser processing techniques for the synthesis, modification, and processing of interdigital electrode materials, including laser pyrolysis, reduction, oxidation, growth, activation, sintering, doping, and ablation, are discussed. In particular, some special features and merits of laser processing techniques are highlighted, including the impacts of laser types and parameters on manufacturing electrodes with desired morphologies/structures and their applications on the formation of high-quality nanoshaped graphene, the selective deposition of nanostructured materials, the controllable nanopore etching and heteroatom doping, and the efficient sintering of nanometal products. Finally, the current challenges and prospects associated with the laser processing of in-plane MSCs are also discussed. This review will provide a useful guidance for the advanced manufacturing of nanostructured electrodes in flexible in-plane energy storage devices and beyond.

Recent advances and challenges in 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts for solar fuels applications

Although photocatalytic technology has emerged as an effective means of alleviating the projected future fuel crisis by converting sunlight directly into chemical energy, no visible-light-driven, low-cost, and highly stable photocatalyst has been developed to date. Due to considerably higher interfacial contact with numerous reactive sites, effective charge transmission and separation ability, and strong redox potentials, the focus has now shifted to 2D/2D heterojunction systems, which have exhibited effective photocatalytic performance. The fundamentals of 2D/2D photocatalysis for different applications and the classification of 2D/2D materials are first explained in this paper, followed by strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of various 2D/2D heterojunction systems. Following that, current breakthroughs in 2D/2D metal-based and metal-free heterojunction photocatalysts, as well as their applications for H₂ evolution via water splitting, CO₂ reduction, and N₂ fixation, are discussed. Finally, a brief overview of current constraints and predicted results for 2D/2D heterojunction systems is also presented. This paper lays out a strategy for developing efficient 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts and sophisticated technology for solar fuel applications in order to address the energy issue.

PLLA/Graphene Nanocomposites Membranes with Improved Biocompatibility and Mechanical Properties

In this work, nanocomposite membranes based on graphene and polylactide were evaluated for mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Single-layer graphene (SLG), graphene nanosheets (GNS), and poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) were prepared through layer-by-layer deposition and homogeneous mixing. The results revealed that PLLA/SLG nanocomposites and PLLA/GNS nanocomposites could show enhanced mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The addition of a tiny amount of SLG significantly improved Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the PLLA matrix by 15.9% and 32.8% respectively, while the addition of the same mass ratio of GNS boosted the elongation at break of the PLLA matrix by 79.7%. These results were ascribed to the crystallinity and interfacial interaction differences resulting from graphene incorporation. Also, improved biocompatibility was observed with graphene incorporation. Such nanocomposites membranes showed a lot of potential as environment-friendly and biomedical materials.

Heteroatom-Doped Graphenes as Actively Interacting 2D Encapsulation Media for Mg-Based Hydrogen Storage

Nanoencapsulation using graphene derivatives enables the facile fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposites with unique microstructures and has been generally applied to many fields of energy materials. Particularly, metal hydrides such as MgH₂ encapsulated by graphene derivatives have emerged as a promising hybrid material for overcoming the disadvantageous properties of Mg-based hydrogen storage. Although the behavior of the graphene-Mg nanoencapsulation interface has been studied for many composite materials, the direct modification of graphene with nonmetal foreign elements for changing the interfacial behavior has been limitedly reported. In this regard, using B-doped graphene and N-doped graphene as nanoencapsulation media for tuning the interfacial behavior of graphene derivative-Mg nanoparticles, we present altered hydrogen storage kinetics of heteroatom-doped (B and N) graphene-Mg composites. The effect of heteroatom doping is studied in terms of bonding configurations and heteroatom doping concentrations. The enhancement in hydrogen uptake was observed for all of the heteroatom-doped graphene-Mg nanocomposites. On the other hand, a few samples exhibit significantly low activation energy at the early stage of desorption, which can be related to the facilitated nucleus formation. Density functional theory calculation indicates that B-doping and N-doping accelerate hydrogen absorption kinetics in different ways, aiding charge transfer and inducing surface deformation of Mg nanoparticles, respectively. Their effects can be augmented in the presence of structural defects on graphene, such as vacancies, pores, or graphene edges. These results demonstrate that hydrogen storage kinetics of Mg-based systems can be altered by utilizing heteroatom-doped graphene oxide derivatives as 2D nanoencapsulation media, suggesting that the addition of a nonmetal doping element can also be applied to Mg-based hydrogen storage by modifying the nanoencapsulation interface without forming Mg alloy phases.

2D/3D S-scheme heterojunction of carbon nitride/iodine-deficient bismuth oxyiodide for photocatalytic hydrogen production and bisphenol A degradation

A novel 2D/3D S-scheme carbon nitride/iodine-deficient bismuth oxyiodide (g-C₃N₄/BiO_1.2I_0.6) heterojunction was constructed for the first time by calcining a mixture of g-C₃N₄ nanosheets and flower-like BiOI. Irradiated by visible light, this g-C₃N₄/BiO_1.2I_0.6 heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production and BPA degradation activity with high cycle stability. In particular, the photocatalytic activity of 0.2-C₃N₄/BiO_1.2I_0.6 could reach 1402.7 μmol g^-1 h^-1 (hydrogen production rate) and 0.01155 min^-1 (apparent rate of bisphenol A degradation), which were 3.5 and 3.2 times that of g-C₃N₄ respectively. The remarkable photocatalytic performance was due to the efficient charge separation of g-C₃N₄/BiO_1.2I_0.6 and the formation of S-scheme heterojunction, which maintained strong photocatalytic reduction and oxidation potentials. Noticeably, the charge density difference and band offsets of the g-C₃N₄/BiO_1.2I_0.6 were calculated. The results revealed that a built-in electric field (IEF) was created. The values of the valence band offset (ΔE_VBO) and the conduction band offset (ΔE_CBO) were -0.84 and -1.27 eV, respectively, which further demonstrated the formation of S-scheme photocatalytic charge transfer mechanism.

Construction of α-Fe2O3/Sulfur-Doped Polyimide Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalyst with Enhanced Solar Light Photocatalytic Activity

A novel two-dimensional α-Fe₂O₃/sulfur-doped polyimide (FO/SPI) direct Z-scheme photocatalyst was successfully constructed by a facile thermal treatment method. The effects of α-Fe₂O₃ nanosheets on the morphology, chemical structure, and photoelectronic properties of FO/SPI composites were systematically characterized by different spectroscopic means. These methods include X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transient fluorescence spectra, and so forth. It was confirmed that the small amounts of α-Fe₂O₃ can availably facilitate exfoliation of bulk SPI, resulting in a transformation of SPI from bulk to 2D layered composite that illustrates tight interface through the coordination Fe-N bond and an all-solid-state direct Z-scheme junction. Thus, the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron/hole pairs were significantly enhanced, which greatly promoted improvement of the photocatalytic activity of the FO/SPI composite for methyl orange degradation under solar light. This work provides a new approach to constructing efficient inorganic-organic Z-scheme photocatalyst based on strong interface interaction.
