Supramolecular Assemblies by Charge-Transfer Interactions between Donor and Acceptor Chromophores

Aqueous Self-Assembly of Hydrophobic Molecules Influenced by the Molecular Geometry

Water, in addition to acting as a solvent, plays a constructional role in aqueous self-assembly. The hydrophobic molecule of POSS-PDI-POSS (POSS = polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, PDI = perylene diimide) has a shape anisotropy in which POSS is a ball-like bulky group and PDI is a flat aromatic group. The self-assembly of this molecule in water created assemblies with inner spaces due to the steric effect, which suppressed aromatic interactions of PDI and trapped water for the colloidal stability. By replacing POSS with dodecyl (C₁₂), C₁₂-PDI-C₁₂ aggregated with extended aromatic interaction of PDI and less inner water. The resulting aggregates tended to agglomerate and precipitate. This discovery extended the scope of aqueous self-assembly by using the building blocks without amphiphilicity and created knowledge for biophysics.

Efficient Photoinduced Electron Transfer from Pyrene-o-Carborane Heterojunction to Selenoviologen for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Reduction of Alkynes

A series of pyrene or pyrene-o-carborane-appendant selenoviologens (Py-SeV²⁺ , Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ ) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reduction of alkynes is reported. The efficient photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from electron-rich pyrene-o-carborane heterojunction (Py-Cb) with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristic to electron-deficient selenoviologen (SeV²⁺ ) (k_ET = 1.2 × 10¹⁰ s^-1 ) endows the accelerating the generation of selenoviologen radical cation (SeV^+• ) compared with Py-SeV²⁺ and other derivatives. The electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices' (ECD and EFCD) measurements and supramolecular assembly/disassembly processes of SeV²⁺ and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) results show that the PET process can be finely tuned by electrochemical and host-guest chemistry methods. By combination with Pt-NPs catalyst, the Py-Cb-SeV²⁺ -based system shows high-efficiency visible-light-driven HER and highly selective phenylacetylene reduction due to the efficient PET process.

Programmed Macromolecular Assembly by Dipole-Dipole Interactions with Aggregation-Induced Enhanced Emission in Aqueous Medium

Self-assembling polymers by bioinspired directional supramolecular interactions currently hold great scientific and technological interests. Herein, we report an unorthodox strategy based on a dipole-dipole interaction-mediated extended antiparallel dipolar assembly of a model merocyanine (MC) dye for maneuvering the self-assembly of a highly water-soluble MC-functionalized block copolymer (P2). Unlike traditional amphiphilic block copolymers featuring distinct hydrophobic segments (flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon chains or rigid nonpolar aromatic scaffolds), P2 comprises polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (PEG) as a hydrophilic block and an unconventional structure-directing acrylate block functionalized with polar MC-dyes in the side chains of every repeat unit. In the absence of any additional hydrophobic assistance, P2 spontaneously self-assembles in water through the continuous opposite alignment of its pendant MCs by multiple dipole-dipole interactions to cancel out their ground state dipole moments, which initially generates an H-aggregated species with ill-defined morphology (Aggregate 1). Upon thermal annealing, Aggregate 1 reorganizes into higher-order core-shell nanodisc-like structures (Aggregate 2) driven by the orthogonal π-stacking interactions of the rigid aromatic framework derived from the extended cofacial MC-stacks. The aromatic interiors of the nanodiscs gain colloidal stability from the externally decorated hydrophilic PEG chains. While the initially formed Aggregate 1, predominantly by dipole-dipole interactions, showed remarkable thermal stability due to the cooperative effect of the polymer chain, the hierarchical assembly guided by relatively weaker dispersion forces of the MC-stacked π-surfaces could be tailored by dilution or thermal treatment. Such organized packing of pendant MCs by the dual effect of dipole-dipole interactions and π-stacking conferred several exciting properties to the P2 assembly in water. Long-range ordered antiparallel stacking of the pendant MCs rendered outstanding aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties to the resultant nanostructures in water with increased fluorescence lifetime, quantum yield, and Stokes shift compared to nonaggregating P2 in CHCl₃. The remarkable thermal and kinetic stability of the nanodiscs, their guest loading ability, and very low critical aggregation concentration (CAC) were demonstrated by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies with an encapsulated donor-acceptor dye pair.

Stable room temperature ferroelectricity in hydrogen-bonded supramolecular assemblies of ambipolar π-systems

This article reports H-bonding driven supramolecular polymerization of naphthalimide (A)-thiophene (D)-naphthalimide (A) (AD n A, n = 1-4) conjugated ambipolar π-systems and its remarkable impact on room temperature ferroelectricity. Electrochemical studies confirm the ambipolar nature of these AD n A molecules with the HOMO-LUMO gap varying between 2.05 and 2.29 eV. Electron density mapping from ESP calculations reveals intra-molecular charge separation as typically observed in ambipolar systems. In the aggregated state, AD1A and AD2A exhibit bathochromically shifted absorption bands while AD3A and AD4A show typical H-aggregation with a hypsochromic shift. Polarization vs. electric field (P-E) measurements reveal stable room temperature ferroelectricity for these supramolecular assemblies, most prominent for the AD2A system, with a Curie temperature (T c) ≈ 361 K and saturation polarization (P s) of ∼2 μC cm-2 at a rather low coercive field of ∼2 kV cm-1. Control molecules, lacking either the ambipolar chromophore or the amide functionality, do not show any ferroelectricity, vindicating the present molecular and supramolecular design. Computational studies enable structural optimization of the stacked oligomer(s) of AD2A molecules and reveal a significant increase in the macro-dipole moment (in the range of 10-12 Debye) going from the monomer to the oligomer(s), which provides the rationale for the origin of ferroelectricity in these supramolecular polymers.

Tuning the donor-acceptor interactions in phase-segregated block molecules

The assembly of donor-acceptor molecules via charge transfer (CT) interactions gives rise to highly ordered nanomaterials with appealing electronic properties. Here, we present the synthesis and bulk co-assembly of pyrene (Pyr) and naphthalenediimide (NDI) functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMS) of discrete length. We tune the donor-acceptor interactions by connecting the pyrene and NDI to the same oligomer, forming a heterotelechelic block molecule (NDI-oDMSPyr), and to two separate oligomers, giving Pyr and NDI homotelechelic block molecules (Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS). Liquid crystalline materials are obtained for binary mixtures of Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS, while crystallization of the CT dimers occurred for the heterotelechelic NDI-oDMS-Pyr block molecule. The synergy between crystallization and phase-segregation coupled with the discrete length of the oDMS units allows for perfect order and sharp interfaces between the insulating siloxane and CT layers composed of crystalline CT dimers. We were able to tune the lamellar domain spacing and donor-acceptor CT interactions by applying pressures up to 6 GPa on the material, making the system promising for soft-material nanotechnologies. These results demonstrate the importance of the molecular design to tune the CT interactions and stability of a CT material.

Room temperature charge-transfer phosphorescence from organic donor–acceptor Co-crystals

Engineering the electronic excited state manifolds of organic molecules can give rise to various functional outcomes, including ambient triplet harvesting, that has received prodigious attention in the recent past. Herein, we introduce a modular, non-covalent approach to bias the entire excited state landscape of an organic molecule using tunable ‘through-space charge-transfer’ interactions with appropriate donors. Although charge-transfer (CT) donor–acceptor complexes have been extensively explored as functional and supramolecular motifs in the realm of soft organic materials, they could not imprint their potentiality in the field of luminescent materials, and it still remains as a challenge. Thus, in the present study, we investigate the modulation of the excited state emission characteristics of a simple pyromellitic diimide derivative on complexation with appropriate donor molecules of varying electronic characteristics to demonstrate the selective harvesting of emission from its locally excited (LE) and CT singlet and triplet states. Remarkably, co-crystallization of the pyromellitic diimide with heavy-atom substituted and electron-rich aromatic donors leads to an unprecedented ambient CT phosphorescence with impressive efficiency and notable lifetime. Further, gradual minimizing of the electron-donating strength of the donors from 1,4-diiodo-2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene (or 1,2-diiodo-3,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzene) to 1,2-diiodo-4,5-dimethylbenzene and 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene modulates the source of ambient phosphorescence emission from the ³CT excited state to ³LE excited state. Through comprehensive spectroscopic, theoretical studies, and single-crystal analyses, we elucidate the unparalleled role of intermolecular donor–acceptor interactions to toggle between the emissive excited states and stabilize the triplet excitons. We envisage that the present study will be able to provide new and innovative dimensions to the existing molecular designs employed for triplet harvesting.

Tuning Rheological Behaviors of Supramolecular Aqueous Gels via Charge Transfer Interactions

Rheological properties are critical for determining real applications of supramolecular gels in various fields. Correspondingly, the modulation of gel rheology will be very important for meeting real requirements. In this aspect, a few strategies were applied to tune the rheological behaviors of supramolecular gels, but some specific interactions like charge transfer (CT) interactions were less explored at the molecular level. Herein, we report a pyrene-containing derivative of diphenylalanine as a donor gelator and naphthalenediimide or 3,5-dinitrobenzene as matching acceptor molecules. It was found that the viscoelastic properties and strength of the original gel could be tuned through addition of different acceptor molecules to the original gel with changing the ratios of the selected acceptor molecules. As a result, storage modulus was continuously adjusted over a wide range from 190,000 to 50,000 Pa by CT interactions. Furthermore, the mechanism of the CT-induced change in rheological properties was understood and clarified through relevant techniques (e.g., UV-Vis, fluorescence, and FT-IR spectroscopy and TEM). The findings in this work would provide a novel strategy to modulate the rheological properties of supramolecular gels for adaption to broader fields of real applications.

Photochromic Polyoxometalate/Perylenediimide Donor-Acceptor Hybrid Crystals with Interesting Luminescent Properties

The self-assembly of electron-deficient protonated N, N'-dipyridyltetrachloroperylenediimide (4Cl-DPPDI) and electron-rich polyoxometalate acids H_nXM₁₂O₄₀ (POMs; X = P or Si; M = W or Mo) resulted in four isomorphous donor-acceptor hybrid crystals 1-4 with segregated POM anions and one-dimensional racemic hydrogen-bonded 4Cl-DPPDI networks as electron-donor and -acceptor components, respectively. Because of the compact contacts between the POM anions and 4Cl-DPPDI tectons induced by anion-π interactions, besides enhanced photochromism, these four unique isostructural hybrids exhibited unusual room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions. More interestingly, owing to the facial compact contacts of two racemic 4Cl-DPPDI tectons induced by lone pair-π-assisted π-π interactions, they also showed unprecedented photon upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA).

Responsive Interfacial Assemblies Based on Charge-Transfer Interactions

Charge transfer (CT) interactions have been widely used to construct supramolecular systems, such as functional nanostructures and gels. However, to date, there is no report on the generation of CT complexes at the liquid-liquid interface. Here, by using an electron-deficient acceptor dissolved in water and an electron-rich donor dissolved in oil, we present the in situ formation and assembly of CT complex surfactants (CTCSs) at the oil-water interface. With time, CTCSs can assemble into higher-order nanofilms with exceptional mechanical properties, allowing the stabilization of liquids and offering the possibility to structure liquids into nonequilibrium shapes. Moreover, due to the redox-responsiveness of the electron-deficient acceptor, the association and dissociation of CTCSs can be reversibly manipulated in a redox process, leading to the switchable assembly and disassembly of the resultant constructs.

Molecular Approach to Engineer Two-Dimensional Devices for CMOS and beyond-CMOS Applications

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted tremendous research interest over the last two decades. Their unique optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties make 2DMs key building blocks for the fabrication of novel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) and beyond-CMOS devices. Major advances in device functionality and performance have been made by the covalent or noncovalent functionalization of 2DMs with molecules: while the molecular coating of metal electrodes and dielectrics allows for more efficient charge injection and transport through the 2DMs, the combination of dynamic molecular systems, capable to respond to external stimuli, with 2DMs makes it possible to generate hybrid systems possessing new properties by realizing stimuli-responsive functional devices and thereby enabling functional diversification in More-than-Moore technologies. In this review, we first introduce emerging 2DMs, various classes of (macro)molecules, and molecular switches and discuss their relevant properties. We then turn to 2DM/molecule hybrid systems and the various physical and chemical strategies used to synthesize them. Next, we discuss the use of molecules and assemblies thereof to boost the performance of 2D transistors for CMOS applications and to impart diverse functionalities in beyond-CMOS devices. Finally, we present the challenges, opportunities, and long-term perspectives in this technologically promising field.

Synthesis and Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion of Discrete Supramolecular Topologies Featuring Half-Sandwich [Cp*Rh] Units

Although a large number of novel supramolecular topologies featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units have been reported, investigations into the properties of these architectures are astoundingly rare. In addition, the bidentate ligands employed to prepare these species have remained relatively homogeneous (i.e., symmetrical bis(pyri-4-dyl) ligands). To address these paucities in the field, the novel unsymmetrical ligand L2 and the rarely reported pyri-3-dyl ligand L3, all bearing aromatic phenazine groups (an N-heterocyclic analog of anthracene), were synthesized in addition to the common symmetrical pyri-4-dyl L1. [3]Catenane, [2]catenane, and Borromean rings assemblies were constructed successfully by the self-assembly of L1 with different building blocks. Afterward, ligand L2 was applied to prepare two novel molecular-tweezer-like compounds. Lastly, a twisted [2]catenane (relative to the [2]catenane constructed using L1) and a sandwiched metallarectangle were obtained using L3. π-π stacking interactions were observed to play a significant role in stabilizing these topologies, which also promoted nonradiative migration and triggered photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid state. In the solution state, a clear rule of thumb was derived whereby the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency increased as the π-π stacking increased, and a very high photothermal conversion efficiency (35.5-62.4%) was observed. In addition, this family of half-sandwich-based assemblies also exhibited good photothermal conversion properties in the crystalline and noncrystal powder states. This research provides a novel method to synthesize excellent NIR photothermal conversion materials featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units and points to potential applications in the near future.

Unraveling the Complexity of Supramolecular Copolymerization Dictated by Triazine-Benzene Interactions

Supramolecular copolymers formed by the noncovalent synthesis of multiple components expand the complexity of functional molecular systems. However, varying the composition and microstructure of copolymers through tuning the interactions between building blocks remains a challenge. Here, we report a remarkable discovery of the temperature-dependent supramolecular copolymerization of the two chiral monomers 4,4′,4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzamide (S-T) and 4,4′,4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tribenzamide (S-B). We first demonstrate in the homopolymerization of the two individual monomers that a subtle change from the central triazine to benzene in the chemical structure of the monomers significantly affects the properties of the resulting homopolymers in solution. Homopolymers formed by S-T exhibit enhanced stability in comparison to S-B. More importantly, through a combination of spectroscopic analysis and theoretical simulation, we reveal the complex process of copolymerization: S-T aggregates into homopolymers at elevated temperature, and upon slow cooling S-B gradually intercalates into the copolymers, to finally give copolymers with almost 80% alternating bonds at 10 °C. The formation of the predominantly alternating copolymers is plausibly contributed by preferred heterointeractions between triazine and benzene cores in S-T and S-B, respectively, at lower temperatures. Overall, this work unravels the complexity of a supramolecular copolymerization process where an intermediate heterointeraction (higher than one homointeraction and lower than the other homointeraction) presents and proposes a general method to elucidate the microstructures of copolymers responsive to temperature changes.

Recent progress and future challenges in the supramolecular polymerization of metal-containing monomers

The self-assembly of discrete molecular entities into functional nanomaterials has become a major research area in the past decades. The library of investigated compounds has diversified significantly, while the field as a whole has matured. The incorporation of metal ions in the molecular design of the (supra-)molecular building blocks greatly expands the potential applications, while also offering a promising approach to control molecular recognition and attractive and/or repulsive intermolecular binding events. Hence, supramolecular polymerization of metal-containing monomers has emerged as a major research focus in the field. In this perspective article, we highlight recent significant advances in supramolecular polymerization of metal-containing monomers and discuss their implications for future research. Additionally, we also outline some major challenges that metallosupramolecular chemists (will) have to face to produce metallosupramolecular polymers (MSPs) with advanced applications and functionalities.

Bioinspired Conjugated Tri-Porphyrin-Based Intracellular pH-Sensitive Metallo-Supramolecular Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Chemo- and Photothermal Combined Therapy

Porphyrins have been extensively used in clinical phototherapy. However, most of them exhibited absorption below 700 nm. We report conjugated tri-porphyrins showing absorption within a biological phototherapy window (700-850 nm). On this basis, bioinspired intracellular pH-sensitive metallo-supramolecular nanoparticles (NPs) are designed. They provide the simultaneous photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. After treatment by tail vein injection, the tumor was completely relieved without recurrence in a course of 27 days. These bioinspired intracellular pH-sensitive metallo-supramolecular NPs show excellent potential application in near-infrared photoacoustic imaging-guided chemo-photothermal combined therapy.

Thermodynamic Insights into Protein Adsorption on Supramolecular Assemblies of π-Amphiphiles

Nonspecific adsorption of proteins on the surface of nanocarriers plays a critical role in their cellular uptake and other biological functions. This article reports vesicular assemblies of two π-amphiphiles (NDI-1 and NDI-2) and thermodynamic aspects of their interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA). Both contain a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) core and two oligo-oxyethylene (OE) wedges but differ by the presence of the hydrazide group in NDI-1. NDI-2 exhibits a constricted π-stacking and enthalpy-driven adsorption of BSA. In contrast, NDI-1 exhibits a stronger interaction due to enhanced entropy contribution. It is postulated that a tight packing of NDI chromophores in NDI-2 results in an inadequate space in the corona, leading to the dehydration of OE chains, which contributes to the observed enthalpy-driven binding. On the other hand, due to H-bonding along the direction of π-stacking in NDI-1, an enhanced interchromophoric distance provides more space in the shell, resulting in less dehydration of the OE chains, which results in an entropy gain from the BSA binding-induced release of water from the OE chains. Intercalation of an electron-rich pyrene in the electron-deficient NDI-1 stack further reduces the grafting density of the OE chains, resulting in negligible BSA adsorption, similar to a stealth polymer. A correlation can be seen between the thermodynamic landscape of the protein adsorption and the trend of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which follows the order NDI-1 + Py < NDI-1 < NDI-2.

Dye encapsulation engineering in a tetraphenylethylene-based MOF for tunable white-light emission

The development of efficient and stable white-light emissive materials is highly desirable in displays and solid-state lighting. Here we present a high-quality white-light emitter based a dual-emitting MOF hybrid, which is achieved by dye encapsulation engineering within a robust Zr-MOF (PCN-128W) containing a highly luminescent tetraphenylethylene-based ligand. The pore confinement effect well isolates the incorporated dye molecules (trans-4-[4-(Dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide (DSM)) and therefore suppress the aggregation caused luminescence quenching. The dye emission is mainly sensitized by PCN-128W host through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), and the FRET process is incomplete, thus enabling the hybrid to feature dual emissions upon a single excitation. The emission color of DSM@PCN-128W hybrid can be systematically tuned from blue to white, and to orange by regulating the dye encapsulation content. A broad white-light emission with a considerably high quantum yield (21.2%) is obtained in the case of dye contents of 0.15 wt%. The luminescence of DSM@PCN-128W hybrid is stable in ambient air for over 1 month, and show good resistance to continuous UV light irradiation, owing to the protective MOF Matrix that largely inhibits the UV exposure to dye molecules. What's more, by combining DSM@PCN-128W with a commercial UV LED chip, we fabricate a white-light emitting prototype device showing CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.34, 0.33), a CRI of 79.1, and a CCT of 5525 K.

Tubular supramolecular alternating copolymers fabricated by cyclic peptide-polymer conjugates

Supramolecular copolymers are an emerging class of materials, which bring together different properties and functionalities of multiple components via noncovalent interactions. While it is widely acknowledged that the repeating unit sequence plays an essential role on the performance of these materials, mastering and tuning the supramolecular copolymer sequence is still an open challenge. To date, only statistical supramolecular copolymers have been reported using cyclic peptide-polymer conjugates as building blocks. To enrich the diversity of tubular supramolecular copolymers, we report here a strategy of controlling their sequences by introducing an extra complementary noncovalent interaction. Hence, two conjugates bearing one electron donor and one electron acceptor, respectively, are designed. The two conjugates can individually assemble into tubular supramolecular homopolymers driven by the multiple hydrogen bonding interactions between cyclic peptides. However, the complementary charge transfer interaction between the electron donor and acceptor makes each conjugate more favorable for complexing with its counterpart, resulting in an alternating sequence of the supramolecular copolymer. Following the same principle, more functional supramolecular alternating copolymers are expected to be designed and constructed via other complementary noncovalent interactions (electrostatic interactions, metal coordination interactions, and host-guest interactions, etc.).

Unexpected three-state hydrochromism of a donor-acceptor self-complex with fluctuations in relative humidity

Water in our environment is ever present, particularly in our atmosphere, from which it may be adsorbed by materials hygroscopically. At the molecular level, the binding of water molecules to various materials is driven by weak interactions but can have profound effects on physical properties, including the donor-acceptor interactions in charge transfer (CT) salts. Herein we present the unexpected three-state hydrochromatic switching of a bipyridinium-based donor-acceptor self-complex with changes in relative humidity (RH) and subsequent stable hydrate formation. RH is typically an overlooked variable that can vary greatly. These findings suggest that care should be taken to consider fluctuations in RH when characterizing the solid state optical band gap and CT absorption bands for organic donor-acceptor CT salt complexes.

Halogen bonding in polymer science: towards new smart materials

The halogen bond is a special non-covalent interaction, which can represent a powerful tool in supramolecular chemistry. Although the halogen bond offers several advantages compared to the related hydrogen bond, it is currently still underrepresented in polymer science. The structural related hydrogen bonding assumes a leading position in polymer materials containing supramolecular interactions, clearly indicating the high potential of using halogen bonding for the design of polymeric materials. The current developments regarding halogen bonding containing polymers include self-assembly, photo-responsive materials, self-healing materials and others. These aspects are highlighted in the present perspective. Furthermore, a perspective on the future of this rising young research field is provided.

The incorporation of halogen bonding into polymer architectures is a new approach for the design of functional materials. This perspective emphasizes the current development in the field of halogen bonding featuring polymer materials.

Dynamics in supramolecular nanomaterials

Self-assembly of amphiphilic small molecules in water leads to nanostructures with customizable structure-property relationships arising from their tunable chemistries. Characterization of these assemblies is generally limited to their static structures -e.g. their geometries and dimensions - but the implementation of tools that provide a deeper understanding of molecular motions has recently emerged. Here, we summarize recent reports showcasing dynamics characterization tools and their application to small molecule assemblies, and we go on to highlight supramolecular systems whose properties are substantially affected by their conformational, exchange, and water dynamics. This review illustrates the importance of considering dynamics in rational amphiphile design.

The Unusual Photochromic and Hydrochromic Switching Behavior of Cellulose-Embedded 1,8-Naphthalimide-Viologen Derivatives in the Solid-State

Stimuli-responsive chromic materials such as photochromics, hydrochromics, thermochromics, and electrochromics have a long history of capturing the attention of scientists due to their potential industrial applications and novelty in popular culture. However, hybrid chromic materials that combine two or more stimuli-triggered color changing properties are not so well known. Herein, we report a design strategy that has led to a series of emissive 1,8-naphthalimide-viologen dyads which exhibit unusual dual photochromic and hydrochromic switching behavior in the solid-state when embedded in a cellulose matrix. This behavior manifests as reversible solid state fluorescence hydrochromism upon changes in atmospheric relative humidity (RH), and reversible solid state photochromism upon generation of a cellulose-stabilized viologen radical cation. In this design strategy, the bipyridinium unit serves as both a water-sensitive receptor for the hydrochromic fluorophore-receptor system, and a photochromic group, capable of eliciting its own visible colorimetric response, generating a fluorescence quenching radical cation with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. These dyes can be inkjet-printed onto cellulose paper or drop-cast as cellulose powder-based films and can be unidirectionally cycled between three different states which can be characteristically visualized under UV light or visible light. The material's photochromism, hydrochromism, and underlying mechanism of action was investigated using computational analysis, dynamic vapor sorption/desorption isotherms, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and variable humidity UV-Vis adsorption and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Thin Film Growth of a Charge Transfer Cocrystal (DCS/TFPA) for Ambipolar Thin Film Transistors

The highly luminescent dicyanodistyrylbenzene-based charge-transfer (CT) cocrystal based on isometric donor and acceptor molecules with a mixing ratio of 2:1 is characterized in the thin film regime. Physical vapor deposited films prepared at different substrate temperatures are analyzed in terms of their thin film structure and transistor performance. The thin film morphologies and crystallographic properties including microstrain and mosaic spread strongly dependent on the substrate temperature. Enhanced crystal growth with rising temperatures leads to a better transistor performance reaching its maximum at 90 °C with a hole and electron mobility of 1.6 × 10^-3 and 2.3 × 10^-5 cm² V^-1 s^-1, respectively. At higher temperatures performance decreases limited by percolation pathways between the enlarged crystals.

Externally Regulated Specific Molecular Recognition Driven Pathway Selectivity in Supramolecular Polymerization

This article reveals 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) regulated pathway selectivity in the supramolecular polymerization of a naphthalene-diimide derivative (NDI-1), appended with a carboxylic acid group. In decane, NDI-1 produces ill-defined aggregate (Agg-1) due to different H-bonding motifs of the -COOH group. With one mole equivalent DMAP, the NDI-1/DMAP complex introduces new nucleation condition and exhibits a cooperative supramolecular polymerization producing J-aggregated fibrillar nanostructure (Agg-2). With 10 % DMAP and fast cooling (10 K/min), similar nucleation and open chain H-bonding with the free monomer in an anti-parallel arrangement produces identical J-aggregate (Agg-2a). With 2.5 % DMAP and slow cooling (1 K/min), a distinct nucleation and supramolecular polymerization pathway emerge leading to the thermodynamically controlled Agg-3 with face-to-face stacking and 2D-morphology. Slow cooling with 5-10 % DMAP produces a mixture of Agg-2a and Agg-3. Computational modelling studies provide valuable insights into the internal order and the pathway complexity.

Anions effect construction of 1D naphthalene diimide supramolecular chains by π interactions and fluorescence detect iodide anion

Five diverse 1D supramolecular chains, {[4-pmntd]}_n(1), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2Br^-}_n(2), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2NO₃^-}_n(3), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2ClO₄^-}_n(4), {H₂[4-pmntd]•2BF₄^-}_n(5), (where 4-pmntd was N,N'-bis (4-pyridylmethyl)naphthalene diimide) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, IR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, fluorescence detection. The anions effect construction of their 1D chain structural diversity through different π interactions. Compound 1 through the adjacent pyridine rings parallel π∙∙∙π interactions formed 1D linear chain structure. Compound 2 through Br^- anion∙∙∙π interactions and halogenbond interactions formed 1D zigzag chain structure. Compound 3 through lone pair∙∙∙π interactions of naphthalene diimide and the adjacent carboxyl group formed 1D stairway chain structure. Compound 4 through ClO₄^- anion∙∙∙π interactions formed 1D ribbon chain structure. Compound 5 through parallel π∙∙∙π interactions of the adjacent naphthalene diimide planes and pyridine rings formed 1D ladder chain structure. The five compounds' fluorescence properties and thermal stabilities were investigated. The compound 2 solution could fluorescence detection for iodide anion via fluorescence quenching.

A Donor-Acceptor [2]Catenane for Visible Light Photocatalysis

Colored charge-transfer complexes can be formed by the association between electron-rich donor and electron-deficient acceptor molecules, bringing about the narrowing of HOMO-LUMO energy gaps so that they become capable of harnessing visible light. In an effort to facilitate the use of these widespread, but nonetheless weak, interactions for visible light photocatalysis, it is important to render the interactions strong and robust. Herein, we employ a well-known donor-acceptor [2]catenane-formed by the mechanical interlocking of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and 1,5-dinaphtho[38]crown-10-in which the charge-transfer interactions between two 4,4'-bipyridinium and two 1,5-dioxynaphthalene units are enhanced by mechanical bonding, leading to increased absorption of visible light, even at low concentrations in solution. As a result, since this [2]catenane can generate persistent bipyridinium radical cations under continuous visible-light irradiation without the need for additional photosensitizers, it can display good catalytic activity in both photo-reductions and -oxidations, as demonstrated by hydrogen production-in the presence of platinum nanoparticles-and aerobic oxidation of organic sulfides, such as l-methionine, respectively. This research, which highlights the usefulness of nanoconfinement present in mechanically interlocked molecules for the reinforcement of weak interactions, can not only expand the potential of charge-transfer interactions in solar energy conversion and synthetic photocatalysis but also open up new possibilities for the development of active artificial molecular shuttles, switches, and machines.

Molecular Recognition Driven Bioinspired Directional Supramolecular Assembly of Amphiphilic (Macro)molecules and Proteins

Bioinspired self-assembly has been explored with diverse synthetic scaffolds, among which amphiphiles are perhaps the most extensively studied systems. Classical surfactants or amphiphilic block copolymers, depending on the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance, produce distinct nanostructures, which hold promise for applications ranging from biology to materials sciences. Nevertheless, their immiscibility-driven aggregation does not provide the opportunity to precisely regulate the internal order, morphology, or functional group display, which is highly desirable, especially in the context of biological applications.A new class of amphiphiles have emerged in the recent past in which the hydrophilic segment(s) is appended with a hydrophobic supramolecular-structure-directing-unit (SSDU), consisting of a π-conjugated chromophore and a H-bonding group. Self-recognition of the SSDU by attractive directional interactions governs the supramolecular assembly, which is fundamentally different than the repulsive solvent-immiscibility driven aggregation of traditional amphiphiles. Such SSDU-appended hydrophilic polymers exhibit entropy-driven highly stable self-assembly producing distinct nanostructures depending on the H-bonding functional group. For example, polymers with the hydrazide-functionalized SSDU attached form a polymersome, while in a sharp contrast, the same polymers when connected to an amide containing SSDU produce a cylindrical micelle via a spherical-micelle intermediate. This relationship holds true for a series of SSDU-attached hydrophilic polymers irrespective of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance or chemical structure, indicating that the supramolecular-assembly is primarily controlled by the specific molecular-recognition motif of the SSDU, instead of the packing parameter-based norms. Beyond synthetic polymers, SSDU-attached proteins also exhibit similar molecular-recognition driven self-assembly as well as coassembly with SSDU-attached polymers or hydrophilic wedges, producing multi-stimuli-responsive nanostructures in which the protein gains remarkable protection from thermal denaturation or enzymatic hydrolysis and exhibits redox-responsive enzymatic activity.Furthermore, SSDU-derived bola-shape π-amphiphiles have been recognized as a useful scaffold for the synthesis of unsymmetric polymersomes, rarely reported in the literature. The building block consists of a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) π-system attached to a hydrophilic functional group (ionic or nonionic) and a nonionic wedge on its two opposite arms. Extended H-bonding among the hydrazide groups, placed only on one side of the central chromophore by design, ensures stacking of the NDIs with parallel orientation and induces a preferred direction of curvature so that the H-bonded chain and consequently the functional groups attached to the same side remain at the inner-wall of the supramolecular polymersome. Automatically, the functional groups, located on the other side, are displayed at the outer surface. This design works for different amphiphiles, which by virtue of efficient and predictable functional group display, strongly influences the multivalent binding with different biological targets resulting in efficient enzyme inhibition, glycocluster effect, or antibacterial activity, depending on the nature of the functional group. By taking advantage of the electron accepting nature of the NDI, electron rich pyrene-containing amphiphiles can be costacked in alternating sequence, producing temperature and redox-responsive supramolecular polymers with NDI/pyrene stoichiometry-dependent morphology, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), functional group display, and antibacterial activity.

Folding and fluorescence enhancement with strong odd-even effect for a series of merocyanine dye oligomers

A series of merocyanine (MC) oligomers with a varying number of chromophores from two to six has been synthesized via a peptide synthesis strategy. Solvent-dependent UV/vis spectroscopic studies reveal folding processes for the MC oligomers driven by strong dipole–dipole interactions resulting in well-defined π-stacks with antiparallel orientation of the dyes. Whilst even-numbered tetramer 4 and hexamer 6 only show partial folding into dimeric units, odd-numbered trimer 3 and pentamer 5 fold into π-stacks of three and five MC units upon decreasing solvent polarity. In-depth 2D NMR studies provided insight into the supramolecular structure. For trimer 3, an NMR structure could be generated revealing the presence of a well-defined triple π-stack in the folded state. Concomitant with folding, the fluorescence quantum yield is increased for all MC oligomers in comparison to the single chromophore. Based on radiative and non-radiative decay rates, this fluorescence enhancement can be attributed to the rigidification of the chromophores within the π-stacks that affords a pronounced decrease of the non-radiative decay rates. Theoretical investigations for the double and triple dye stacks based on time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations indicate for trimer 3 a pronounced mixing of Frenkel and charge transfer (CT) states. This leads to significant deviations from the predictions obtained by the molecular exciton theory which only accounts for the Coulomb interaction between the transition dipole moments of the chromophores.

Enzyme-Induced Supramolecular Order in Pyrene Dipeptide Hydrogels for the Development of an Efficient Energy-Transfer Template

Peptide self-assembly is gathering much attention due to the precise control it provides for the arrangement of functional moieties for the fabrication of advanced functional materials. It is desirable to use a physical, chemical, or biological trigger that can control the self-assembly process. In the current article, we have applied an enzyme to induce the peptide self-assembly of an aromatic peptide amphiphile, which modulates the supramolecular order in the final gel phase material. We accessed diverse peptide hydrogels from identical gelator concentrations by simply changing the enzyme concentration, which controlled the reaction kinetics and influenced the dynamics of self-assembly. Depending upon the concentration of the enzyme, a bell-shaped relationship was observed in terms of intermolecular interactions, morphology, and properties of the final gel phase material. The access of non-equilibrium structures was further demonstrated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and rheology. This strategy is applied to construct a charge-transfer hydrogel by doping the donor hydrogel with an acceptor moiety, which exhibits efficient energy transfer. Interestingly, such structural control at the nanoscopic level can further tune the energy-transfer efficiency by simply modulating the enzyme concentration.

Solvent Effects in Supramolecular Chemistry: Linear Free Energy Relationships for Common Intermolecular Interactions

The proper choice of solvent is of major importance for all studies in supramolecular chemistry, including molecular recognition in host-guest systems, intramolecular folding, self-assembly, and supramolecular polymerization. In this Perspective, the usefulness of linear free energy relationships (LFERs) is highlighted to unravel the effect of solvents on coordinate bonding (e.g., cation-crown ether), hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding, dipolar aggregation, and π-π-stacking. For all of these intermolecular interactions widely applied in supramolecular systems, LFER relationships between the Gibbs binding energies and common solvent polarity scales including E_T(30), π*, α or β based on solvatochromic dyes, scales derived from binding processes such as Gutmann donor and acceptor numbers or hydrogen bond donor and acceptor scales, or physical functions like the Kirkwood-Onsager or the Liptay-Onsager functions could be demonstrated. These relationships can now be applied toward a better understanding of the prevailing intermolecular forces for supramolecular interactions. They further enable a rational selection of the most suitable solvent for the preparation of self-assembled materials and the estimation of binding constants without the need for time-consuming comprehensive investigations of solvents.

Stimuli responsive dynamic transformations in supramolecular gels

Supramolecular gels are formed by the self-assembly of small molecules under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. As the interactions are individually weak and reversible, it is possible to perturb the gels easily, which in turn enables fine tuning of their properties. Synthetic supramolecular gels are kinetically trapped and usually do not show time variable changes in material properties after formation. However, such materials potentially become switchable when exposed to external stimuli like temperature, pH, light, enzyme, redox, and chemical analytes resulting in reconfiguration of gel matrix into a different type of network. Such transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in alteration of physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods that have been used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. We also describe methods that allow time-dependent autonomous switching of gels into different networks enabling synthesis of next generation functional materials. Dynamic modification of gels allows construction of an array of supramolecular gels with various properties from a single material which eventually extend the limit of applications of the gels. In some cases, gel-to-gel transitions lead to materials that cannot be accessed directly. Finally, we point out the necessity and possibility of further exploration of the field.

Ionic Charge-Transfer Liquid Crystals Formed by Alternating Supramolecular Copolymerization of Liquid π-Donors and TCNQ

A new family of liquid π-donors, lipophilic dihydrophenazine (DHP) derivatives, show remarkably high π-electron-donor property which exhibit supramolecular alternating copolymerization with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), giving ionic charge-transfer (ICT) complexes. The ICT complexes form distinct columnar liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases with well-defined alternating molecular alignment as demonstrated by UV-Vis-NIR spectra, IR spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. These liquid crystalline ICT complexes display unique phase transitions in response to mechanical stress: the columnar ICT phase is converted to macroscopically oriented smectic-like mesophases upon applying shear force. Although there exist reports on the formation of ICT in the crystalline state, this study provides the first rational identification of ICT mesophases based on the spectroscopic and structural data. The liquid crystalline ICT phases are generated by strong electronic interactions between the liquid π-donors and solid acceptors. It clearly shows the significance of simultaneous fulfillment of strong π-donating ability and ordered self-assembly of the stable ICT pairs. The flexible, stimuli-responsive structural transformation of the ICT complexes offer a new perspective for designing processable CT systems with controlled hierarchical self-assembly and electronic structures.

Electron-Triggered Metamorphism in Palladium-Driven Self-Assembled Architectures

A metal-induced self-assembly strategy is used to promote the π-dimerization of viologen-based radicals at room temperature and in standard concentration ranges. Discrete box-shaped 2:2 (M:L) macrocycles or coordination polymers are formed in solution by self-assembly of a viologen-based ditopic ligand with cis-[Pd(en)(NO₃)₂], trans-[Pd(CH₃CN)₂(Cl)₂], or [Pd(CH₃CN)₄(BF₄)₂]. Changing the redox state of the bipyridium units involved in the tectons, from their dicationic state to their radical cation state, results in a reversible "inflation/deflation" of the discrete 2:2 (M:L) macrocyclic assemblies associated to a large modification in the size of their inner cavity. Viologen-centered electron transfer is also used to trigger a dissociation of the coordination polymers formed with tetrakis(acetonitrile)Pd(II), the driving force of the disassembling process being the formation of discrete box-shaped 2:2 (M:L) assemblies stabilized by π-dimerization of both viologen cation radicals.

Host-guest chemistry of giant molecular shape amphiphiles based on POSS-PDI conjugates

Giant shape amphiphiles (GSA) are giant molecules made with nano-building blocks that have distinct shapes. The incompatible packing behaviors of the nano-building blocks of GSA could create cavities within certain conformers of the GSA, but the host-guest chemistry of GSA has not been explored yet. In this study, POSS-PDI-POSS (PPP), which is made by connecting two nano-cubes, isobutyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), to a conjugated π-conjugated core, perylene diimide (PDI), is demonstrated as a novel acyclic synthetic host. In its bent conformer, PPP shows a cavity next to its PDI core. Via forming host-guest complexes with π-conjugated guests such as pyrene and perylene, PPP is found to transform from the bent-conformer into the extended-conformer, creating the steric features to accommodate guest molecules. Subsequent thermal annealing of the host-guest complexes removes the π-conjugated guests and restores the bent conformation and photophysical properties of PPP, which verifies that PPP, as a novel acyclic host, is capable of dynamic host-guest assembly. Moreover, the results prove that cavities at the molecular level can be created by connecting nano-building blocks with distinct shapes. This finding may inspire developments in the host-guest chemistry of GSA and nanomaterial innovation.

Near-infrared photon-excited energy transfer in platinum(II)-based supramolecular polymers assisted by upconverting nanoparticles

A novel hybrid supramolecular system with near-infrared photon-excited energy transfer has been successfully constructed, relying on the assistance of upconversion nanoparticles in platinum(ii)-based supramolecular polymers. The resulting hybrid system is capable of displaying intriguing photo-switchable and sequential energy transfer features.

Colored Janus Nanocylinders Driven by Supramolecular Coassembly of Donor and Acceptor Building Blocks

Janus nanocylinders exhibit nanometric dimensions, a high aspect ratio, and two faces with different chemistries (Janus character), making them potentially relevant for applications in optics, magnetism, catalysis, surface nanopatterning, or interface stabilization, but they are also very difficult to prepare by conventional strategies. In the present work, Janus nanocylinders were prepared by supramolecular coassembly in water of two different polymers functionalized with complementary assembling units. The originality of our approach consists in combining charge transfer complexation between electron-rich and electron-poor units with hydrogen bonding to (1) drive the supramolecular formation of one-dimensional structures (cylinders), (2) force the two polymer arms on opposite sides of the cylinders independently of their compatibility, resulting in Janus nanoparticles, and (3) detect coassembly through a color change of the solution upon mixing of the functional polymers.

Sulfoxide hemithioindigo tweezers - visible light addressable capture and release

Introducing responsive elements into supramolecular recognition systems offers great advantages for the control of intermolecular interactions and represents an important stepping stone towards multi-purpose and reprogrammable synthetic systems. Of particular interest is implementation of light-responsiveness because of the unique ease and precision of this signal. Here we present visible light responsive hemithioindigo-based molecular tweezers that bear a highly polar sulfoxide function as an additional recognition unit inside their binding site. Sulfur oxidation allows to simultaneously enhance all crucial properties of this receptor type i.e. photoswitching capability, thermal stability of individual switching states, binding affinity, and binding modulation upon switching. With a novel titration method the thermodynamic binding parameters were determined using reduced sample amounts. Employing these strongly enhanced molecular tweezers allowed to demonstrate photocontrol of intermolecular charge transfer in a reversible manner.

Hemithioindigo based molecular tweezers with a comprehensively improved property profile are obtained by simple oxidation of the sulfur atom.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) and oligo(dimethylsiloxane) solvent effects on aromatic donor-acceptor interactions

Solvents with a wide range of polarities, including poly(dimethylsiloxane) and oligo(dimethylsiloxane), were used to evaluate aromatic donor-acceptor interactions between pyrene and pyromellitic diimide derivatives. The donor-acceptor interactions were stronger in siloxane solvents than in aliphatic solvents, possibly because of the poor solubility of the aromatics in siloxanes.

Stepwise Adsorption of Alkoxy-Pyrene Derivatives onto a Lamellar, Non-Porous Naphthalenediimide-Template on HOPG

The development of new strategies for the preparation of multicomponent supramolecular assemblies is a major challenge on the road to complex functional molecular systems. Here we present the use of a non-porous self-assembled monolayer from uC₃₃ -NDI-uC₃₃ , a naphthalenediimide symmetrically functionalized with unsaturated 33 carbon-atom-chains, to prepare bicomponent supramolecular surface systems with a series of alkoxy-pyrene (PyrOR) derivatives at the liquid/HOPG interface. While previous attempts at directly depositing many of these PyrOR units at the liquid/HOPG interface failed, the multicomponent approach through the uC₃₃ -NDI-uC₃₃ template enabled control over molecular interactions and facilitated adsorption. The PyrOR deposition restructured the initial uC₃₃ -NDI-uC₃₃ monolayer, causing an expansion in two dimensions to accommodate the guests. As far as we know, this represents the first example of a non-porous or non-metal complex-bearing monolayer that allows the stepwise formation of multicomponent supramolecular architectures on surfaces.

Structural influence on stimuli-responsive halogen-bonded luminescent supramolecular polymers from heteroditopic isomers

Halogen-bonded (XB) supramolecular polymers from two heteroditopic, emissive hydroxyquinoline-based structural isomers displayed distinctly different crystal packing & stimuli-responsive morphologies, due to the varying XB directionality & strength.
