Chemical-Reductant-Free Electrochemical Deuteration Reaction using Deuterium Oxide

Synthesis of Deuterated (E)-Alkene through Xanthate-Mediated Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange Reactions

Herein we have developed a reversible hydrogen-deuterium exchange reaction of nonactivated olefins. By using EtOCS₂K as a mediator, the H/D exchange reaction was realized through repeated addition and elimination reactions, demonstrating reversible H/D exchange between ordinary olefins and deuterated olefins. Using the lowest cost D₂O without precious metal catalysts and ligands, a broad spectrum of compatibility of functional groups was achieved.

Electro-mediated PhotoRedox Catalysis for Selective C(sp3 )-O Cleavages of Phosphinated Alcohols to Carbanions

We report a novel example of electro-mediated photoredox catalysis (e-PRC) in the reductive cleavage of C(sp3 )-O bonds of phosphinated alcohols to alkyl carbanions. As well as deoxygenations, olefinations are reported which are E-selective and can be made Z-selective in a tandem reduction/photosensitization process where both steps are photoelectrochemically promoted. Spectroscopy, computation, and catalyst structural variations reveal that our new naphthalene monoimide-type catalyst allows for an intimate dispersive precomplexation of its radical anion form with the phosphinate substrate, facilitating a reactivity-determining C(sp3 )-O cleavage. Surprisingly and in contrast to previously reported photoexcited radical anion chemistries, our conditions tolerate aryl chlorides/bromides and do not give rise to Birch-type reductions.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Simultaneous Olefin Hydrogenation and Alcohol Oxidation over Crystalline Porous Polymeric Carbon Nitride

Booming of photocatalytic water splitting technology (PWST) opens a new avenue for the sustainable synthesis of high-value-added hydrogenated and oxidized fine chemicals, in which the design of efficient semiconductors for the in-situ and synergistic utilization of photogenerated redox centers are key roles. Herein, a porous polymeric carbon nitride (PPCN) with a crystalline backbone was constructed for visible light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen generation by photoexcited electrons, followed by in-situ utilization for olefin hydrogenation. Simultaneously, various alcohols were selectively transformed to valuable aldehydes or ketones by photoexcited holes. The porosity of PPCN provided it with a large surface area and a short transfer path for photogenerated carriers from the bulk to the surface, and the crystalline structure facilitated photogenerated charge transfer and separation, thus enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. High reactivity and selectivity, good functionality tolerance, and broad reaction scope were achieved by this concerted photocatalysis system. The results contribute to the development of highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and synergistic redox reaction systems based on PWST for high-value-added fine chemical production.

Direct electrochemical hydrodefluorination of trifluoromethylketones enabled by non-protic conditions

CF₂H groups are unique due to the combination of their lipophilic and hydrogen bonding properties. The strength of H-bonding is determined by the group to which it is appended. Several functional groups have been explored in this context including O, S, SO and SO₂ to tune the intermolecular interaction. Difluoromethyl ketones are under-studied in this context, without a broadly accessible method for their preparation. Herein, we describe the development of an electrochemical hydrodefluorination of readily accessible trifluoromethylketones. The single-step reaction at deeply reductive potentials is uniquely amenable to challenging electron-rich substrates and reductively sensitive functionality. Key to this success is the use of non-protic conditions enabled by an ammonium salt that serves as a reductively stable, masked proton source. Analysis of their H-bonding has revealed difluoromethyl ketones to be potentially highly useful dual H-bond donor/acceptor moieties.

The electrochemical hydrodefluorination of trifluoromethylketones under non-protic conditions make this single-step reaction at deeply reductive potentials uniquely amenable to challenging electron-rich substrates and reductively sensitive functionalities.

Metal-Free Intramolecular [3+2] Cycloaddition of γ-Hydroxy Acetylenic Ketones with Alkynes for the Synthesis of Naphtho[1,2-c]furan-5-ones and Its Derivatization via a Selective C(sp2)-H Deuteration Reaction

A metal-free intramolecular [3+2] cycloaddtion has been achieved by treating benzene-linked propynol-ynes with AcOH/H₂O in a one-pot manner. The reaction provides greener, 100% atom-economic, highly regioselective, and more practical access to functionalized naphtho[1,2-c]furan-5-ones with valuable and versatile applications. The regioselective α-deuteration of naphtho[1,2-c]furan-5-ones has been also presented with excellent deuterium incorporation and chemical yields. Moreover, the fluorescent properties of naphtho[1,2-c]furan-5-one products have been investigated in solution.

Asymmetric Reduction of Aromatic α-Dehydroamino Acid Esters with Water as Hydrogen Source

The asymmetric reduction of aromatic α-dehydroamino acid esters with water as the hydrogen source was developed by a Rh/Cu co-catalytic system. The reaction tolerates various functional groups, providing a valuable synthetic tool to access chiral α-amino acid esters readily. Moreover, the present methodology also was applied in the cost-effective and easy to handle preparation of chiral deuterated α-amino esters by using D₂O.

Indirect Electrosynthesis with Halogen Ions as Mediators

Organic electrosynthesis has gained increasing research interest as it harvests electric current as redox regents, thereby providing a sustainable alternative to conventional approaches. Compared with direct electrosynthesis, indirect electrosynthesis employs mediator(s) to lower the overpotentials for substrate activation, and enhance the reaction efficiency and functional group compatibility by shifting the heterogenous electron transfer process to be homogenous. As one of the most versatile and cost-efficient mediators, halogen mediators are always combined with an irreversible halogenation reaction. Thus, the electrochemical reaction between halogen mediators and substrates doesn't directly controlled by the two standard potentials difference. In this account, our recent developments in the area of halogen-mediated indirect electrosynthesis are summarized. The anodically generated halogen species from halogenide salts have the abilities to undergo electron-transfer (ET) or hydrogen-atom- transfer (HAT) processes. The reaction features, scopes, limitations, and mechanistic rationalisations are discussed in this account. We hope our studies will contribute to the future developments to broaden the scope of halogen-mediated electrosynthesis.

Electrochemical synthesis of versatile ammonium oxides under metal catalyst-, exogenous-oxidant-, and exogenous-electrolyte-free conditions

An electrochemical oxidative cross-coupling reaction between 2.5-substituted-pyrazolin-5-ones and ammonium thiocyanate has been developed, which resulted in a series of unprecedented cross-coupling products under metal catalyst-, exogenous-oxidant-, and exogenous-electrolyte-free conditions. It is worth noting that since the resulting cross-coupling products are nearly insoluble in MeCN, the pure product could be afforded without silica gel column purification. In addition, the prepared ammonium oxides are versatile building blocks for synthesizing functionalized pyrazole derivatives.

A highly selective decarboxylative deuteration of carboxylic acids

In this paper, we report a mild and practical method for precise deuteration of aliphatic carboxylic acids by synergistic photoredox and HAT catalysis. The reaction delivers excellent D-incorporation (up to 99%) at predicted sites even in substrates bearing reactive C-H bonds or versatile functional groups. The use of a recirculation reactor with a peristaltic pump supports a scalable preparative ability (up to 50 mmol) under very mild reaction conditions. The practical and precise deuteration of readily available complex carboxylic acids makes this protocol promising for the preparation of deuterium-labelled compounds.

An electrochemical C3-sulfonylation of imidazo[1, 2-a]pyridines with sodium benzenesulfinate has been developed, providing an straightforward protocol towards biologically and synthetically useful 3-(arylsulfonyl)imidazo[1, 2-a]pyridine.

Direct electrochemical defluorinative carboxylation of α-CF3 alkenes with carbon dioxide

An unprecedented γ-carboxylation of α-CF3 alkenes with CO2 is reported. This approach constitutes a rare example of using electrochemical methods to achieve regioselectivity complementary to conventional metal catalysis. Accordingly, using platinum plate as both a working cathode and a nonsacrificial anode in a user-friendly undivided cell under constant current conditions, the γ-carboxylation provides efficient access to vinylacetic acids bearing a gem-difluoroalkene moiety from a broad range of substrates. The synthetic utility is further demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis and elaboration to several value-added products. Cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory calculations were performed to provide mechanistic insights into the reaction.

Selective α,δ-hydrocarboxylation of conjugated dienes utilizing CO2 and electrosynthesis

To date the majority of diene carboxylation processes afford the α,δ-dicarboxylated product, the selective mono-carboxylation of dienes is a significant challenge and the major product reported under transition metal catalysis arises from carboxylation at the α-carbon. Herein we report a new electrosynthetic approach, that does not rely on a sacrificial electrode, the reported method allows unprecedented direct access to carboxylic acids derived from dienes at the δ-position. In addition, the α,δ-dicarboxylic acid or the α,δ-reduced alkene can be easily accessed by simple modification of the reaction conditions.
