Abstract
Biodegradable polymers are of current interest and chemical functionality in such materials is often demanded in advanced biomedical applications. Functional groups often are not tolerated in the polymerization process of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and therefore protective groups need to be applied. Advantageously, several orthogonally reactive functions are available, which do not demand protection during ROP. We give an insight into available, orthogonally reactive cyclic monomers and the corresponding functional synthetic and biodegradable polymers, obtained from ROP. Functionalities in the monomer are reviewed, which are tolerated by ROP without further protection and allow further post-modification of the corresponding chemically functional polymers after polymerization. Synthetic concepts to these monomers are summarized in detail, preferably using precursor molecules. Post-modification strategies for the reported functionalities are presented and selected applications highlighted.

Abstract
CO2 conversion covers a wide range of possible application areas from fuels to bulk and commodity chemicals and even to specialty products with biological activity such as pharmaceuticals. In the present review, we discuss selected examples in these areas in a combined analysis of the state-of-the-art of synthetic methodologies and processes with their life cycle assessment. Thereby, we attempted to assess the potential to reduce the environmental footprint in these application fields relative to the current petrochemical value chain. This analysis and discussion differs significantly from a viewpoint on CO2 utilization as a measure for global CO2 mitigation. Whereas the latter focuses on reducing the end-of-pipe problem "CO2 emissions" from todays' industries, the approach taken here tries to identify opportunities by exploiting a novel feedstock that avoids the utilization of fossil resource in transition toward more sustainable future production. Thus, the motivation to develop CO2-based chemistry does not depend primarily on the absolute amount of CO2 emissions that can be remediated by a single technology. Rather, CO2-based chemistry is stimulated by the significance of the relative improvement in carbon balance and other critical factors defining the environmental impact of chemical production in all relevant sectors in accord with the principles of green chemistry.

Abstract
A new lanthanum heteroscorpionate complex has shown exceptional catalytic activity for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide. This catalyst system also promotes the reaction of bio-based epoxides to give an important class of bis(cyclic carbonates) that can be further used for the production of bio-derived non-isocyanate polyurethanes. The catalytic process requires low catalyst loading and mild reaction conditions for the synthesis of a wide range of cyclic carbonates.

Abstract
The depolymerization of poly(limonene carbonate) (PLC) initiated by 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) was investigated. The strong organic base TBD was capable of deprotonating the OH-terminated PLC, leading to fast degradation via backbiting reactions at high temperature. An interesting feature of the base-initiated breakdown of PLC lies in the quantitative depolymerization into the corresponding initial limonene oxide monomer. This result implies the complete back-to-monomer recyclability of the fully biobased PLC, which accordingly can be considered as a really sustainable material. Additionally, the stability of PLC when exposed to TBD was enhanced by an end-capping reaction, which further supported the proposed degradation pathway.

Abstract
Salalen-aluminum complexes were synthesized and used as catalysts in the reactions of CO2 with different epoxides. The reaction of cyclohexene oxide and CO2 was thoroughly investigated. In particular, the effect of the reaction conditions (nature and equivalents of the co-catalyst, CO2 pressure, and temperature) and of the ligands (substituents on the ancillary ligand, nature of the labile ligand, and nature of the nitrogen-donor atoms) on the results of this reaction was studied. The cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with terminal epoxides bearing different functional groups was realized. Moreover, NMR mechanistic studies provided information on the catalytic cycle. Interestingly, the characterization of an intermediate species in the mechanism of the reaction of cyclohexene oxide with CO2 , catalyzed by one of the salalen-aluminum complexes, was accomplished.

Abstract
Chromium(III) chlorido amine-bis(phenolate) complexes paired with nucleophilic co-catalysts are a promising family of catalysts for the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides to selectively produce polycarbonates with a very high degree of carbonate linkages. Single-component catalyst systems can be prepared, where the neutral nucleophile, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), is coordinated to the metal site to provide a stable octahedral CrIII complex. These complexes possess the potential for both anionic (from the chlorido ligand) or neutral (DMAP) nucleophilic epoxide ring-opening during the proposed rate-determining initiation step. Concentration effect studies support a first-order dependence of the polymerization rate on the concentration of single-component catalyst. End-group analysis of polycarbonates by MALDI-TOF MS indicate the presence of predominantly DMAP-initiated chains as well as the occurrence of chain-transfer events resulting in ether linkages, likely from the presence of cyclohexene diol formed by the reaction of cyclohexene oxide and adventitious water.

Abstract
A series of vanadium compounds supported by tetradentate aminobis(phenolate) ligands were screened for catalytic reactivity in the reaction of propylene oxide (PO) with CO2 : [VO(OMe)(O2 NOBuMeMeth )], [VO(OMe)(ON2 OBuMe )], [VO(OMe)(O2 NNBuBuPy )], and [VO(OMe)(O2 NOBuBuFurf )]. They showed similar reactivities, but reaction rates were higher for [VO(OMe)(ON2 OBuMe )], which was studied in more detail. Turnover frequencies for conversion of PO over 500 h-1 were observed. Activation energies were determined experimentally through in situ IR spectroscopy for propylene carbonate (48.2 kJ mol-1 ), styrene carbonate (45.6 kJ mol-1 ), and cyclohexene carbonate (54.7 kJ mol-1 ) formation.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with accessible Lewis acid sites are finding increasing application in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, the structural instability of MOFs when they are exposed to high temperature and/or high pressure often limits their applicability. In this study, two strategies were applied to achieve a MOF catalyst with high stability, activity and selectivity in the reaction of CO2 with styrene oxide to produce styrene carbonate. In the first approach, a MOF with linkers with high connectivity as MIL-100(Cr) was studied, leading to promising activity and recyclability in consecutive catalytic runs without loss of activity. In the second strategy, a MOF with linkers with lower connectivity but with encapsulated Keggin phosphotungstic acid (MIL-101(Cr)[PTA]) was prepared. However, the activity of this catalyst decreased upon reuse as a consequence of deterioration of the MOF. Further investigations were dedicated to the enhancement of the catalytic performance of MIL-100 and included the variation of the metal centre as well as the type and loading of organic salt acting as nucleophile source. This allowed tuning the nature of the organic halide to the specific porous structure of MIL-100(Cr) to prevent diffusion limitations. The best catalytic performance was obtained for MIL-100(Cr) in combination with EMIMBr ionic liquid, which gave very high styrene carbonate yield (94 %) with complete selectivity after 18 h of reaction at mild temperature (60 °C).

Abstract
A bimetallic aluminium(salphen) complex is reported as a sustainable, efficient and inexpensive catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide. In the presence of this complex and tetrabutylammonium bromide, terminal and internal epoxides reacted at 50 °C and 10 bar carbon dioxide pressure to afford their corresponding cyclic carbonates in yields of 50-94 % and 30-71 % for terminal and internal cyclic carbonates, respectively. Mechanistic studies using deuterated epoxides and an analogous monometallic aluminium(salphen) chloride complex support a mechanism for catalysis by the bimetallic complex, which involves intramolecular cooperative catalysis between the two aluminium centres.

Abstract
Stereochemically inert cationic cobalt(III) complexes were shown to be one-component catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide at 50 °C and 5 MPa carbon dioxide pressure. The optimal catalyst possessed an iodide counter anion and could be recycled. A catalytic cycle is proposed in which the ligand of the cobalt complexes acts as a hydrogen-bond donor, activating the epoxide towards ring opening by the halide anion and activating the carbon dioxide for subsequent reaction with the halo-alkoxide. No kinetic resolution was observed when terminal epoxides were used as substrates, but chalcone oxide underwent kinetic resolution.

Abstract
The review summarizes current trends and developments in the polymerization of alkylene oxides in the last two decades since 1995, with a particular focus on the most important epoxide monomers ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), and butylene oxide (BO). Classical synthetic pathways, i.e., anionic polymerization, coordination polymerization, and cationic polymerization of epoxides (oxiranes), are briefly reviewed. The main focus of the review lies on more recent and in some cases metal-free methods for epoxide polymerization, i.e., the activated monomer strategy, the use of organocatalysts, such as N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) as well as phosphazene bases. In addition, the commercially relevant double-metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst systems are discussed. Besides the synthetic progress, new types of multifunctional linear PEG (mf-PEG) and PPO structures accessible by copolymerization of EO or PO with functional epoxide comonomers are presented as well as complex branched, hyperbranched, and dendrimer like polyethers. Amphiphilic block copolymers based on PEO and PPO (Poloxamers and Pluronics) and advances in the area of PEGylation as the most important bioconjugation strategy are also summarized. With the ever growing toolbox for epoxide polymerization, a "polyether universe" may be envisaged that in its structural diversity parallels the immense variety of structural options available for polymers based on vinyl monomers with a purely carbon-based backbone.

Abstract
A heterogenized catalyst on a highly porous covalent triazine framework was synthesized and characterized to have a coordination environment similar to that of its homogeneous counterpart. The catalyst efficiently converted CO2 into formate through hydrogenation with a turnover number of 5000 after 2 h and an initial turnover frequency of up to 5300 h(-1) ; both of these values are the highest reported to date for a heterogeneous catalyst, which makes it attractive toward industrial application. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst was found to be stable in air and was recycled by simple filtration without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract
Two new one-component aluminium-based catalysts for the reaction between epoxides and carbon dioxide have been prepared. The catalysts are composed of aluminium–salen chloride complexes with trialkylammonium groups directly attached to the aromatic rings of the salen ligand. With terminal epoxides, the catalysts induced the formation of cyclic carbonates under mild reaction conditions (25–35 °C; 1–10 bar carbon dioxide pressure). However, with cyclohexene oxide under the same reaction conditions, the same catalysts induced the formation of polycarbonate. The catalysts could be recovered from the reaction mixture and reused.

Abstract
The atom-efficient reaction of CO2 with a variety of epoxides has been efficiently achieved employing iron pyridylamino-bis(phenolate) complexes as bifunctional catalysts. The addition of a Lewis base co-catalyst allowed significant reduction in the amount of iron complex needed to achieve high epoxide conversions. The possibility of controlling the selectivity of the reaction towards either cyclic carbonate or polycarbonate was evaluated. An efficient switch in selectivity could be achieved when cyclic epoxides such as cyclohexene oxide and the seldom explored 1,2-epoxy-4-vinylcyclohexane were used as substrates. The obtained poly(vinylcyclohexene carbonate) presents pending vinyl groups, which allowed post-synthetic cross-linking by reaction with 1,3-propanedithiol. The cross-linked polycarbonate displayed a substantial increase in the glass transition temperature and chemical resistance, thus opening new opportunities for the application of these green polymers.

Abstract
The selective and effective synthesis of organic carbonates under mild conditions, starting from carbon dioxide and oxiranes, catalyzed by metal complexes is currently a focus of interest for both industrial and academic researchers. We recently developed a novel thioether-triphenolate iron(iii) catalyst (Ct-Bu) that has proven to be highly active for the coupling of CO2 with epoxides, resulting in cyclic organic carbonates under solvent-free conditions. In the current work, the properties of this novel class of catalysts were extensively investigated. In particular, the steric properties of the ligand were modulated by changing the substituents of the aromatic rings in order to obtain a deeper knowledge of the relationship between the complex structure and catalytic performance/selectivity for these iron complexes. Notably, the less steric demanding iron(iii) CH complex synthesized shows, when activated by n-tetrabutylammonium bromide, an impressive turnover frequency (TOF) of 3800 h−1 for the formation of propylene carbonate and glycerol carbonate which are, by far, the highest reported for an iron based catalyst and compares well with the most active catalyst based on other metals.
