Abstract
More than a century old, sulfonium cations are still intriguing species in the landscape of organic chemistry. On one hand they have found broad applications in organic synthesis and materials science, but on the other hand, while isoelectronic to the ubiquitous tertiary phosphine ligands, their own coordination chemistry has been neglected for the last three decades. Here we report the synthesis and full characterization of the first Rh(i) and Pt(ii) complexes of sulfonium. Moreover, for the first time, coordination of an aromatic sulfonium has been established. A thorough computational analysis of the exceptionally short S–Rh bonds obtained attests to the strongly π-accepting nature of sulfonium cations and places them among the best π-acceptor ligands available today. Our calculations also show that embedding within a pincer framework enhances their π-acidity even further. Therefore, in addition to the stability and modularity that these frameworks offer, our pincer complexes might open the way for sulfonium cations to become powerful tools in π-acid catalysis. Back to the scene: while isolobal to the ubiquitous tertiary phosphines, sulfonium cations as ligands were neglected for decades. This work revives the coordination chemistry of these species showing their potential as ligands for π-acid catalysis.![]()

Abstract
Chalcogen bonding (ChB) has emerged as a promising tool in organic synthesis. However, compared with the well-developed selenium- and tellurium-based salt catalysts, the ChB catalysis of sulfonium salts is still unknown. Here, we report a new type of alkynyl-sulfonium salt ChB catalysis for various ionic transformations, including transfer hydrogenation, bromination, bromolactonization, dimerization of 1,1-diphenylethylene, nitro-Michael addition reaction and Ritter reaction. More importantly, the photocapability of ChB was first demonstrated to generate alkynyl radicals for the synthesis of a variety of chalcogenoacetylenes. Mechanistic studies shed light on the mechanism of the photoinduced reactions and confirmed the involvement of alkynyl radicals which are difficult to generate otherwise.

Abstract
The direct cross-couplings of aryl sulfonium salts with aryl halides could be achieved by using nickel as a reaction catalyst. The reactions proceeded efficiently via C-S bond activation in the presence of magnesium turnings and lithium chloride in THF at ambient temperature to afford the corresponding biaryls in moderate to good yields, potentially serving as an attractive alternative to conventional cross-coupling reactions employing preprepared organometallic reagents.

Abstract
Thiacrown ethers have attracted much attention in host-guest chemistry. Herein, we present the polymethylation reactions of unsaturated thiacrown ethers. Unsaturated thiacrown ethers having sulfonium groups were synthesized by the reaction of corresponding unsaturated thiacrown ethers with methyl triflate. The obtained methylated unsaturated thiacrown ethers were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, UV absorption measurement, and cyclic voltammetry. The occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals of the obtained methylated unsaturated thiacrown ethers are essentially localized respectively around the sulfide groups and the sulfonium groups. Furthermore, the results of electrostatic potential maps indicated that positive charges were distributed throughout the entire unsaturated thiacrown ether moieties.

Abstract
α-Amino azines are widely found in pharmaceuticals and ligands. Herein, we report a practical method for accessing this class of compounds via photocatalyzed hydroarylation of azine-substituted enamides with the in situ-generated aryl thianthrenium salts as the radical precursor. This reaction features a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and mild conditions and is suitable for the late-stage installation of α-amino azines in complex structures.

Abstract
We disclose a direct C(sp)-, C(sp2)-, and C(sp3)-H thiolation reaction using β-sulfinylesters as the versatile sulfur source. The key step of this protocol is chemoselective C-S bond cleavage of the sulfonium salts that are formed in situ from the corresponding alkenes, alkynes, and 1,3-dicarboxyl compounds with β-sulfinylesters. The successful capture of the acrylate byproduct supports a retro-Michael reaction mechanism.

Abstract

The introduction
of thianthrene as a linchpin has proven to be
a versatile strategy for the C–H functionalization of aromatic
compounds, featuring a broad scope and fast diversification. The synthesis
of aryl thianthrenium salts has displayed an unusually high para regioselectivity, notably superior to those observed
in halogenation or borylation reactions for various substrates. We
report an experimental and computational study on the mechanism of
aromatic C–H thianthrenation reactions, with an emphasis on
the elucidation of the reactive species and the nature of the exquisite
site selectivity. Mechanisms involving a direct attack of arene to
the isolated O-trifluoracetylthianthrene S-oxide (TT+-TFA) or to the thianthrene
dication (TT2+) via electron transfer under
acidic conditions are identified. A reversible interconversion of
the different Wheland-type intermediates before a subsequent, irreversible
deprotonation is proposed to be responsible for the exceptional para selectivity of the reaction.

Abstract
Alkyl groups are one of the most widely used groups in organic synthesis. Here, a a series of thianthrenium salts have been synthesized that act as reliable alkylation reagents and readily engage in copper-catalyzed Sonogashira reactions to build C(sp3 )-C(sp) bonds under mild photochemical conditions. Diverse alkyl thianthrenium salts, including methyl and disubstituted thianthrenium salts, are employed with great functional breadth, since sensitive Cl, Br, and I atoms, which are poorly tolerated in conventional approaches, are compatible. The generality of the developed alkyl reagents has also been demonstrated in copper-catalyzed Kumada reactions.

Abstract
The reactivity of 5-(alkynyl)dibenzothiophenium salts 1 is explored in the presence of different nucleophiles, dienes, and under photochemical conditions. Reaction with lithium acetylides affords diynes in moderate yields; while depending on the substitution pattern, the reaction with sulfinates delivers either the alkyne transfer products, alkynyl sulfones, or β-(sulfonium) vinyl sulfones through addition to the C-C triple bond. Similar behavior is observed when tosylamines are used as nucleophiles. Salts of general formula 1 also react with dienes to render the corresponding Diels-Alder cycloadducts. The vinyl sulfonium salts obtained by these routes further react with nucleophiles through a Michael addition, dibenzothiophene elimination sequence. Alternatively, they also engage in photoinduced radical cyclizations to produce substituted phenanthrenes. Attempts to use this specific addition/radical cyclization sequence for the construction of the 6a,7-dehydroaporphine skeleton present in several families of alkaloids are also described.

Abstract
Sulfonium salts bearing a positively charged sulfur atom with three organic substituents have intrigued chemists for more than a century for their unusual structures and high chemical reactivity. These compounds are known to undergo facile single-electron reduction to emerge as a valuable and alternative source of aryl radicals for organic synthesis. However, the generation of non-stabilized alkyl radicals from sulfonium salts has been a challenge for several decades. Here we report the treatment of S-(alkyl) thianthrenium salts to generate non-stabilized alkyl radicals as key intermediates granting the controlled and selective outcome of the ensuing reactions under mild photoredox conditions. The value of these reagents has been demonstrated through the efficient construction of alkylboronates and other transformations, including heteroarylation, alkylation, alkenylation, and alkynylation. The developed method is practical, and provides the opportunity to convert C-OH bond to C-B and C-C bonds.

Abstract
We report a late‐stage heteroarylation of aryl sulfonium salts through activation with α‐amino alkyl radicals in a mechanistically distinct approach from previously reported halogen‐atom transfer (XAT). The new mode of activation of aryl sulfonium salts proceeds in the absence of light and photoredox catalysts, engaging a wide range of hetarenes. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of this methodology in synthetically useful cross‐coupling transformations.

Abstract
A highly efficient method for the selective formal C-H/C-H cross-coupling of azoles and (hetero)arenes was established through arylsulfonium intermediates under transition-metal catalysis, which produced a variety of 2-(hetero)aryl azoles in good to excellent yields. Advantages of the reaction included mildness, a good functional group tolerance, a wide range of substrates, a high regio- and chemoselectivity, one-pot procedures, and the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules without the use of oxidants, offering a promising strategy for the transition-metal-catalyzed C-H arylation of azoles.

Abstract
Isothiouronium salts are easily accessible and stable compounds. Herein, we report their use as versatile deoxasulfenylating agents enabling a stereoselective, thiol-free protocol for synthesis of thioethers from alcohols. The method is simple, scalable and tolerates a broad range of functional groups otherwise incompatible with other methods. Late-stage modification of several pharmaceuticals provides access to multiple analogues of biologically relevant molecules. Performed experiments give insight into the reaction mechanism. A simple and scalable method for stereoselective synthesis of thioethers directly from alcohols using isothiouronium salts is presented. The utility of this thiol-free reaction was exemplified by late-stage modification of complex molecules.![]()

Abstract
The one-pot synthesis of well-defined 5-(diarylimino) and 5-(sulfoximido)dibenzothiophenium triflates, respectively from diarylimines or sulfoximines, is reported and the structures of a series of these compounds are elucidated by X-ray crystallography. In analogy to their hypervalent I(iii) analogues, the iminoyl and sulfoximidoyl groups of these compounds can be selectively transferred to organic substrates. Specifically, the uncatalyzed imination of thiols or sulfinates proceeds with good yields, while under the mild reaction conditions offered by visible light photoredox catalysis, the radical amination of hydrazones or the sulfoximidation of benzylic, allylic and propargylic C-H bonds takes place satisfactorily.

Abstract
The one-pot synthesis of a series of sulfonium salts containing transferable diazomethyl groups is described, and the structure of these compounds is elucidated by X-ray crystallography. Under photochemical conditions, reaction of these salts with N,N-dialkyl hydrazones affords 1-(dialkylamino)-1,2,3-triazoles via diazomethyl radical addition to the azomethine carbon followed by intramolecular ring closure. The straightforward transformation of the structures thus obtained into mesoionic carbene-metal complexes is also reported and the donor properties of these new ligands characterized.

Abstract
![]()
S-Aryl dibenzothiophenium salts, obtained through a highly
regioselective C–H sulfenylation of o-benzyl-protected phenols,
are used as precursors of 6H-benzo[c]chromenes. The
reaction starts with a photocatalytically triggered single-electron transfer to the
sulfonium salt, which promotes the formation of an aryl radical via selective mesolitic
cleavage of the S–Arexo bond. Mechanistic studies reveal that this
initial radical species cyclizes following a kinetically favored 5-exo-trig pathway.
Subsequent ring expansion, favored by rearomatization, delivers the desired tricyclic
systems.

Abstract
Diverse C-P cross-couplings of arylthianthrenium salts with diarylphosphines producing various triarylphosphines via highly selective C-S bond cleavage are reported. In the absence of catalyst, the reaction of arylthianthrenium salts with diarylphosphines undergoes phosphinative ring opening exclusively via the cleavage of an endocyclic C-S bond of a thianthrene skeleton. The use of a palladacycle catalyst under otherwise the same conditions enables the phosphination via the cleavage of an exocyclic C-S bond with significantly higher speed.

Abstract
An S-selective arylation of pyridylsulfides with good functional group tolerance was developed. To demonstrate synthetic utility, the resulting pyridylsulfonium salts were used in a scalable transition-metal-free coupling protocol, yielding functionalized bipyridines with extensive functional group tolerance. This modular methodology permits selective introduction of functional groups from commercially available pyridyl halides, furnishing symmetrical and unsymmetrical 2,2'- and 2,3'-bipyridines. Iterative application of the methodology enabled the synthesis of a functionalized terpyridine with three different pyridine components.

Abstract
While aryl germanes have recently found usage as coupling partners in powerful catalytic applications, the synthetic access to this promising functionality is currently limited. This report details the straightforward synthesis of functionalized aryl triethylgermanes via formal C-H functionalization. Building on the concept of directing-group-free and site-selective C-H functionalization of arenes to thianthrenium salt intermediates, we showcase their efficient couplings with triethylgermane (Et3Ge-H) at room temperature, which was enabled by the air- and moisture-stable Pd(I) dimer, [Pd(μ-I)(PtBu3)]2. The method tolerates numerous functional groups, including valuable (pseudo)halides.
