Sustainable aggregation-induced emission material based on pectin-l-lysine: Potential antibacterial and monitoring in food spoilage

The demand of smart food detection system which in detecting food spoilage is increasing. In this work, a new type of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compound was synthesized based on pectin (P) and l-lysine (Lys). P-Lys is an AIE active compound which has the advantages of simple synthesis, easy modification and processability, it also has good water solubility and biocompatibility. Moreover, P-Lys has potential application in detecting Fe³⁺ (oxidation from Fe²⁺) and bacterial in monitoring pork spoilage. In addition, P-Lys also has spectral antibacterial properties which can prevent pork spoilage. The research results shown that P-Lys, as a new type of food testing agent has a useful future in monitoring and protecting the freshness of food.

Anionic polymerization of nonaromatic maleimide to achieve full-color nonconventional luminescence

Nonconventional or nonconjugated luminophore without polycyclic aromatics or extended π-conjugation is a rising star in the area of luminescent materials. However, continuously tuning the emission color within a broad visible region via rational molecular design remains quite challenging because the mechanism of nonconventional luminescence is not fully understood. Herein, we present a new class of nonconventional luminophores, poly(maleimide)s (PMs), with full-color emission that can be finely regulated by anionic polymerization even at ambient temperature. Interestingly, the general characteristics of nonconventional luminescence, cluster-triggered emission, e.g., concentration-enhanced emission, are not observed in PMs. Instead, PMs have features similar to aggregation-caused quenching due to boosted intra/inter-molecular charge transfer. Such a biocompatible luminescent material synthesized from a low-cost monomer shows great prospects in large-scale production and applications, including security printing, fingerprint identification, metal ion recognition, etc. It also provides a new platform of rational molecular design to achieve full-color nonconventional luminescence without any aromatics.

Structure-Dependent Nontraditional Intrinsic Fluorescence of Aliphatic Hyperbranched Polyureas

The nontraditional intrinsic fluorescence (NTIF) of polymers containing heteroatoms has gained considerable attention due to its promising applications in label-free bioimaging. Aliphatic hyperbranched polyureas (aBPUs), which have recently shown great promise in the field of nanomedicine, bear controllable urea groups distributed on the branch points and thus are potential candidate luminogens. However, their NTIF properties and how their structures influence the NTIF properties have not been illustrated yet. Here, we addressed these issues by synthesizing a series of aBPUs with different degrees of branching (DBs) or different modifications. aBPUs exhibited an obvious NTIF phenomenon and with the increase of DBs, the NTIF enhanced as well. Chemical modifications either at the branching ends or in the interior of aBPUs could affect the NTIF performances, which were highly dependent on the types of modification. Disruption of the intra-/intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions decreased the NTIF. In addition, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified aBPUs could self-assemble into nanospheres, and the formation of nanoassembly led to 89% enhancement on NTIF compared with the homogeneous solution of aBPUs-PEG in dimethylformamide (DMF). Finally, aBPUs-PEG nanoassembly demonstrated a capability in realizing label-free material imaging in vitro. These results shed light on the rational design of the polymer structures to achieve desired fluorescence with unconventional luminophores.

Insight into the Clustering-Triggered Emission and Aggregation-Induced Emission Exhibited by an Adamantane-Based Molecular System

Chemical clustering of a nonemissive and non-AIEgen of Cb-Ph endowed a molecular system (Ad-4CP) with unique dual emissions in the solution state, a typical clustering-triggered emission (CTE), and high emission efficiency in the aggregated state, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The CTE was ascribed to intramolecular charge transfer (CT); however, the AIE was ascribed to both intra- and intermolecular CTs. The two-level CTs make the Ad-4CP exhibit remarkable excitation-dependent emissions. We believe that the present work not only delivers a peculiar molecular system with both CTE and AIE properties but also provides an example on how molecular engineering promotes the rational design of CTE and AIE systems via clusterization of suitable structural units.

Clustering and halogen effects enabled red/near-infrared room temperature phosphorescence from aliphatic cyclic imides

Pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials become increasingly important in advanced optoelectronic and bioelectronic applications. Current phosphors based on small aromatic molecules show emission characteristics generally limited to short wavelengths. It remains an enormous challenge to achieve red and near-infrared (NIR) RTP, particularly for those from nonaromatics. Here we demonstrate that succinimide derived cyclic imides can emit RTP in the red (665, 690 nm) and NIR (745 nm) spectral range with high efficiencies of up to 9.2%. Despite their rather limited molecular conjugations, their unique emission stems from the presence of the imide unit and heavy atoms, effective molecular clustering, and the electron delocalization of halogens. We further demonstrate that the presence of heavy atoms like halogen or chalcogen atoms in these systems is important to facilitate intersystem crossing as well as to extend through-space conjugation and to enable rigidified conformations. This universal strategy paves the way to the design of nonconventional luminophores with long wavelength emission and for emerging applications.

Inherent Flame-Retardant, Humid Environment Stable and Blue Luminescent Polyamide Elastomer Regulated by Siloxane Moiety

The rapid development of the polymeric materials market has created an urgent demand for the thermoplastic polyamide elastomer (TPAE) owing to its greater functionality, and ability to be synthesized via a facile and industrial route. In this work, a series of novel silicone-containing polyamides (PA1212/Si12) were successfully synthesized from 1,12-dodecarboxylic acid (LA), 1,12-dodecarbondiamine (DMDA), and 1,3-bis (amino-propyl) tetramethyldisiloxane (BATS), via a one-pot melt polycondensation method in the absence of a catalyst. FTIR, ¹H-NMR, GPC and inherent viscosity results cohesively prove that the polymerization of monomers was well conducted, and the chemical structure was in high accordance with the design. As expected, the Si12 unit-content of the copolymers regulate the properties of the series. As the feeding ratio of BATS in the diamines increases from 5 mol% to 40 mol%, the thermal transition temperatures, T_g and T_m, decline steadily before finally stabilizing at ~6 °C and 160 °C, respectively, indicating that the co-polyamides possess improved chain flexibility but restricted crystallization ability. The conspicuous evolution in crystalline morphology of the series was observed by XRD and AFM. The increased PA Si12 phase induces the crystallized PA 1212 phase to transit from a thermally-favorable large and rigid crystal structure (α phase) to a kinetically-favorable small and ductile crystal structure (γ phase). Reflected in their stress–strain behavior, PA1212/Si12 copolymers are successfully tailored from rigid plastic to ductile elastomer. The tensile strength mildly drops from above 40 MPa to ~30 MPa while the reversible elongation increases from ~50% to approximately 350%. Accordingly, the moderate surface tension differences in the monomers facilitate the efficient conduction of the co-polymerization process, and the distributed short siloxane unit in the backbone fulfills the copolymer with desirable elasticity. Interestingly, the novel silicone-containing polyamides also display Si12 unit-content dependent flame retardancy, humidity stability, and unconventional solid-state fluorescence properties. The elastomers exhibit a low bibulous rate and anti-fouling characteristics to dye droplets and mud contamination, pass the V–1 rating (UL 94) with a constantly declining PHRR value, and emit blue luminescence under a 365 nm light source. Herein, we propose a new facile strategy for developing a high-performance and multifunctional silicone-modified polyamide, which bears promising industrialization potential. In addition, this first reported silicone-containing thermoplastic polyamide elastomer, which is self-extinguishing, anti-fouling and blue-luminescent, will further broaden the application potential of thermoplastic polyamide elastomers.

Clustering emission of cucurbit[n]urils in the solid- and solution-state induced by the outer surface interactions of cucurbit[n]urils

Atypical luminescent compounds that do not contain conventional chromophores emit light due to clustering and have important basic research value and a broad range of potential applications. To date, most atypical luminescent compounds are small molecules or polymers containing groups such as cyano, carbonyl and hydroxyl. In this work, driven by some sporadic and accidental luminescence phenomena observed for cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s), the luminescent properties and mechanism of Q[n]s in the solid- and solution-state were systematically studied and the clustering emission of Q[n]s confirmed. Our experiments have revealed that the self-induced outer-surface interactions of Q[n]s (OSIQ) are the most important driving force resulting in the clustering emission of Q[n]s. Substances that can weaken the effect of self-induced OSIQ, such as the presence of various aromatic compounds and anions, may weaken or quench the clustering emission of Q[n]s. This not only reveals the new characteristics and mechanism of the clustering emission of Q[n]s, but also provides new insights on how to utilize the clustering emission of Q[n]s and construct new types of macrocyclic luminescence systems.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Nicotinic Acid and Isonicotinic Acid: Efficient Intermolecular Hydrogen-Bond Interaction in Molecular Array

Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has attracted wide interest due to its unique advantages and promising applications. However, it is still challenging to develop efficient RTP through precise molecular design. In this work, RTP is observed from two simple aromatic acids, nicotinic acid (NA) and isonicotinic acid (INA), in the crystal state. Single crystal structure analysis indicates that an intense hydrogen bond between the pyridine nitrogen atom and the carboxyl group results in zigzag and linear molecular packing modes in NA and INA crystal. From theoretical calculations, the hydrogen bond can effectively promote the intersystem crossing process and stabilize triplet exciton. The identical molecular orientations in the molecular array contribute to the larger dipole moment of INA as compared to that of NA, which should be responsible for the red-shifted photoluminescence and RTP of INA. When the hydrogen bond is destructed by grinding or deprotonation, the RTP decreases sharply, further confirming the crucial role of the hydrogen bond on RTP.

Photoluminescent polymer micelles with thermo-/pH-/metal responsibility and their features in selective optical sensing of Pd(ii) cations

Photoluminescent polymers can be divided into two types of structures: one is the well-known conventional π-conjugated rigid chain polymers bearing π-conjugated chromophores in their side chains, and the other is the common flexible polymers without π-conjugated chromophores in their main or side chains but with a feature of clustering electron-rich and/or dipole groups in their main and/or side chains. In this work, we found a new photoluminescent polymer comprising theophylline (T) and imidazole (I) residues in a suitable ratio in the side chains on the common polystyrenic block (PVB-T/I). We synthesized a block copolymer (denoted as P2) consisting of hydrophobic PVB-T/I and hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and we investigated its self-assembly into micelles and their micellar features, such as thermo-responsibility, fluorescence emission, pH, and metal ion-dependent photoluminescence, in detail. Especially, the micelles self-assembled from P2 showed intrinsic blue emission which was emitted from the charge transfer association between T and I residues in the intra-chains. Weakening the association by adjustment of the pH or addition of metal ions could evidently reduce the photoluminescence in the micellar state. Very interestingly, among many metal cations, only Pd2+, which can chelate strongly with theophylline, strongly quenched the photoluminescence from the micelles. Therefore, the polymer micelles functioned as an optical sensor for Pd(ii) ion not only by spectroscopy but also with the naked eye.

Single-component color-tunable circularly polarized organic afterglow through chiral clusterization

Circularly polarized organic afterglow (CPOA) with both long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is currently attracting great interest, but the development of multicolor-tunable CPOA in a single-component material remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report an efficient strategy to achieve multicolor CPOA molecules through chiral clusterization by implanting chirality center into non-conjugated organic cluster. Owing to excitation-dependent emission of clusters, highly efficient and significantly tuned CPOA emissions from blue to yellowish-green with dissymmetry factor over 2.3 × 10-3 and lifetime up to 587 ms are observed under different excitation wavelengths. With the distinguished color-tunable CPOA, the multicolor CPL displays and visual RTP detection of ultraviolent light wavelength are successfully constructed. These results not only provide a new paradigm for realization of multicolor-tunable CPOA materials in single-component molecular systems, but also offer new opportunities for expanding the applicability of CPL and RTP materials for diversified applications.

Truly Multicolor Emissive Hyperbranched Polysiloxane: Synthesis, Mechanism Study, and Visualization of Controlled Drug Release

Unconventional fluorescent polymers have attracted increasing attention due to their facile synthesis, excellent biocompatibility, and novel photophysical properties. In this work, a truly multicolor emissive hyperbranched polysiloxane (HBPSi-β-CD) is obtained through adjusting the distribution of electron-rich atoms and grafting β-cyclodextrin; the quantum yields of HBPSi-β-CD after being excited by 360, 420, 450, and 550 nm are 19.36, 31.46, 46.14 and 44.84%, respectively. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the truly multicolor emission is derived from the formed electron delocalization among the hydroxyl, amine, ether, and -Si(O)₃ groups due to the strong intermolecular interaction, high density of electron-rich atoms, and low steric hindrance among functional groups. The prepared polymers could serve as a multisensitivity sensor in detecting Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, and Co²⁺. The HBPSi-β-CD shows low cytotoxicity and excellent cellular imaging capability. The self-assembly of HBPSi-β-CD also possesses high drug loading capacity and pH-controlled drug release, especially, the drug delivery system could be applied in the visualization of controlled drug delivery.

Supramolecule-Originated Emission: A Room-Temperature Phosphorescence 2D Ionic H-Bond Network from Nonemissive Aliphatic Derivatives

Supramolecular materials exhibiting unique functions unavailable from their individual components are attracting great attention. Here, we report a novel supramolecule emission strategy, where the emission originated from a two-dimensional (2D) ionic hydrogen bond (H-bond) supramolecular network. High-quality crystals were obtained by rapid self-assembly of liquid aliphatic amine and ketone. The 2D ionic H-bonding network was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) that shows a planar electron system similar to aromatic species. First-principles calculations demonstrated that the charge-separated transition process and high spin-orbital coupling constants of the rigid supramolecular structure contribute to the enhanced singlet-triplet intersystem crossing process. The emission could be well regulated via the substituents of either the enol or amine part, and a maximum quantum efficiency of 26% was realized. The emission system demonstrated stable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), which is even hard to obtain for aromatic species, and the lifetime reached 0.45 s with an 8% luminescence quantum yield. For application, with liquid amine and enol as ink, high-quality RTP patterns can be fabricated by computer-controlled precision printing. Our findings will surely bring completely fresh thinking for photoluminescence and other functions purely originated by the supramolecular structure.

Hydrated hydroxide complex dominates the AIE property of nonconjugated polymeric luminophores

Nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) which always accompanied with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features has received considerable attention due to their importance in the understanding of basic luminescence principle and potential practical applications. However, the rational modulation of the NTIL of nonconventional luminophores remains difficult, on account of the limited understanding of emission mechanisms. Herein, the emission colour of nonconjugated poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) (PMVEMA) could be readily regulated from blue to red by controlling the alkalinity during the hydrolysis process. The nontraditional photoluminescence with AIE property was from the new formed p-band state, resulting from the strong overlapping of p orbitals of the clustered O atoms through space interactions. Hydrated hydroxide complexes embedded in the entangled polymer chain make big difference on the clustering of O atoms which dominates the AIE property of nonconjugated PMVEMA. These new insights into the photoluminescence mechanism of NTIL should stimulate additional experimental and theoretical studies and could benefit the molecular-level design of nontraditional chromophores for optoelectronics and other applications. Tyrosine-based photoluminescent diketopiperazine supramolecular aggregates

L-Tyrosine diketopiperazine (DKP) derivative 1 was synthesized, and the aggregation and photoluminescence behaviors were examined. A solution of 1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) gradually became viscous at room temperature, and turned into the gel state 5 hours after preparation, as confirmed by dynamic viscoelasticity measurement. A solution of 1 in THF exhibited photoluminescence. Fibrous patterns were observed by transmission electron, atomic force and fluorescence microscopies. Dynamic light scattering, semiempirical molecular orbital and density functional theory calculations, as well as molecular dynamics simulations, indicated aggregate formation. This was attributed to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, mainly between the DKP moieties and partly between the urethane moieties, resulting in π-orbital overlap of the terminal phenyl groups leading to photoluminescence.

Hydrolyzation-Triggered Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence in Biobased Nonconjugated Polymers

Amorphous nonconjugated room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) polymers have aroused ever-increasing attention. However, the variety of such polymers is still rare due to limited preparation strategies. Herein, we report a facile strategy to achieve ultralong RTP emission in biobased nonconjugated polymers through a hydrolyzation process. The investigated polymers are synthesized by free radical solution copolymerization using biomass methyl isoeugenol and maleic anhydride as monomers. Noticeably, the obtained polymers carry no conventional fluorescent units but can exhibit blue fluorescence. More interestingly, after hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide aqueous solution, the resulting hydrolyzed polymers emit both enhanced blue emission and persistent RTP (up to 400 ms) under air conditions, with reversible emission performance switched via the uptake and removal of water. Also worthy to be highlighted is that the emission can be remarkably regulated by the cations in carboxylate or the substituents on the benzene ring. The as-obtained polymers demonstrate potential applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption.

Bathochromic-Shifted Emissions by Postfunctionalization of Nonconjugated Polyketones

Most nontraditional intrinsic luminescent (NTIL) polymers currently show blue fluorescence. Tuning the emission color of NTIL polymers is of fundamental importance for their applications, but it still remains a scientific challenge. Herein, we initially develop an efficient strategy for bathochromic shifting of NTIL polymers by through-space acceptor-donor charge transfer between the in chain and the side chain. A variety of functionalized polyketones (FPK-R; where R = H, Ph, Me, tBu, F, and Cl) with furan rings built into the polymer chain were prepared by the Paal-Knorr reaction. FPK-R polymers showed bright and bathochromic-shifted fluorescence compared with their counterparts. The emission color could be tuned by changing the postfunctionalization conversion and varying the styrenic monomer substituent. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the color tunability originated from enhanced through-space charge transfer between the side chain phenyl and the in chain furan rings.

Nonconventional luminophores: characteristics, advancements and perspectives

Nonconventional luminophores devoid of remarkable conjugates have attracted considerable attention due to their unique luminescence behaviors, updated luminescence mechanism of organics and promising applications in optoelectronic, biological and medical fields. Unlike classic luminogens consisting of molecular segments with greatly extended electron delocalization, these unorthodox luminophores generally possess nonconjugated structures based on subgroups such as ether (-O-), hydroxyl (-OH), halogens, carbonyl (CO), carboxyl (-COOH), cyano (CN), thioether (-S-), sulfoxide (SO), sulfone (OSO), phosphate, and aliphatic amine, as well as their grouped functionalities like amide, imide, anhydride and ureido. They can exhibit intriguing intrinsic luminescence, generally featuring concentration-enhanced emission, aggregation-induced emission, excitation-dependent luminescence and prevailing phosphorescence. Herein, we review the recent progress in exploring these nonconventional luminophores and discuss the current challenges and future perspectives. Notably, different mechanisms are reviewed and the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism is highlighted, which emphasizes the clustering of the above mentioned electron rich moieties and consequent electron delocalization along with conformation rigidification. The CTE mechanism seems widely applicable for diversified natural, synthetic and supramolecular systems.

Sustainable Silk-Derived Multimode Carbon Dots

Carbon dots (CDs) are widely studied for years due to their unique luminescent properties and potential applications in many fields. However, aggregation-caused quenching, monotonous emission modes, and unsustainable preparation impose restrictions on their performance and practical applications. Here, this work reports the facile synthesis of sustainable silk-derived multimode emitting CDs with dispersed-state fluorescence (DSF), aggregation-induced fluorescence (AIF), and aggregation-induced room temperature phosphorescence (AIRTP) through radiating sericin proteins in a household microwave oven (800 W, 2.5 min). The structure, luminescent properties, and the mechanism are investigated and discussed. The sericin-derived CDs have graphitized cores and heteroatom-cluster-rich surfaces. The DSF corresponds to the graphitized cores and the AIF origins from the aggregation-induced abundant orbital energy levels on the heteroatom-cluster-rich surfaces. The presence of abundant hydrogen bonds and small gap between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states induces AIRTP. Finally, based on the unique multimode emission of the prepared CDs, their applications in high-performance white-light-emitting diode, information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and visual humidity sensors are demonstrated.

Boron-Catalyzed Polymerization of Phenyl-Substituted Allylic Arsonium Ylides toward Nonconjugated Emissive Materials from C3/C1 Monomeric Units

Two novel allylic arsonium ylide monomers with a phenyl (steric and electronic effect) group at different positions were synthesized and used in boron-catalyzed polymerization to produce a series of well-defined polymers, poly(2-phenyl-propenylene-co-2-phenyl-propenylidene) (P2-PhAY) and poly(3-phenyl-propenylene-co-3-phenyl-propenylidene) (P3-PhAY), with unusual structures but a controllable molecular weight and relatively low polydispersity. The backbone of these polymers consists of a mixture of C1 (chain grows by one carbon atom at a time) and C3 (chain grows by three carbon atoms at a time) monomeric units, as determined by ¹H, ¹³C, and ¹H-¹³C HSQC 2D NMR. Based on the experimental results and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations, we were able to propose a mechanism that takes into account not only the steric hindrance, but also the electron effect of the phenyl group. In addition, a nontraditional intrinsic luminescence was observed from the nonconjugated P2-PhAY and P3-PhAY; such unexpected emission is attributed to the formation of C3-unit clusters, as evidenced by ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Structural Water Molecules Confined in Soft and Hard Nanocavities as Bright Color Emitters

Molecules confined in the nanocavity and nanointerface exhibit rich, unique physicochemical properties, e.g., the chromophore in the β-barrel can of green fluorescent protein (GFP) exhibits tunable bright colors. However, the physical origin of their photoluminescence (PL) emission remains elusive. To mimic the microenvironment of the GFP protein scaffold at the molecule level, two groups of nanocavities were created by molecule self-assembly using organic chromophores and by organic functionalization of mesoporous silica, respectively. We provide strong evidence that structural water molecules confined in these nanocavities are color emitters with a universal formula of {X⁺·(OH^-·H₂O)·(H₂O) _n-1}, in which X is hydrated protons (H₃O⁺) or protonated amino (NH₃ ⁺) groups as an anchoring point, and that the efficiency of PL is strongly dependent on the stability of the main emitter centers of the structural hydrated hydroxide complex (OH^-·H₂O), which is a key intermediate to mediate electron transfer dominated by proton transfer at confined nanospace. Further controlled experiments and combined characterizations by time-resolved steady-state and ultrafast transient optical spectroscopy unveil an unusual multichannel radiative and/or nonradiative mechanism dominated by quantum transient states with a distinctive character of topological excitation. The finding of this work underscores the pivotal role of structurally bound H₂O in regulating the PL efficiency of aggregation-induced emission luminogens and GFP.

Caged structural water molecules emit tunable brighter colors by topological excitation

Intrinsically, free water molecules are a colourless liquid. If it is colourful, why and how does it emit the bright colours? We provided direct evidence that when water was trapped into the sub-nanospace of zeolites, the structural water molecules (SWs) exhibited strong tunable photoluminescence (PL) emissions from blue to red colours with unprecedented ultra-long lifetimes up to the second scale at liquid nitrogen temperature. Further controlled experiments and combined characterizations by time-resolved steady-state and ultra-fast femtosecond (fs) transient optical spectroscopy showed that the singly adsorbed hydrated hydroxide complex {OH^-·H₂O} as SWs in the confined nanocavity is the true emitter centre, whose PL efficiency strongly depends on the type and stability of the SWs, which is dominated by H-bond interactions, such as the solvent effect, pH value and operating temperature. The emission of SWs exhibits the characteristic of topological excitations (TAs) due to the many-body quantum electron correlations in confined nanocavities, which differs from the local excitation of organic chromophores. Our model not only elucidates the origin of the PL of metal nanoclusters (NCs), but also provides a completely new insight to understand the nature of heterogeneous catalysis and interface bonding (or state) at the molecule level, beyond the metal-centred d band theory.

Generating circularly polarized luminescence from clusterization-triggered emission using solid phase molecular self-assembly

Purely-organic clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) has displayed promising abilities in bioimaging, chemical sensing, and multicolor luminescence. However, it remains absent in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) due to the difficulties in well-aligning the nonconventional luminogens. We report a case of CPL generated with CTE using the solid phase molecular self-assembly (SPMSA) of poly-L-lysine (PLL) and oleate ion (OL), that is, the macroscopic CPL supramolecular film self-assembled by the electrostatic complex of PLL/OL under mechanical pressure. Well-defined interface charge distribution, given by lamellar mesophases of OL ions, forces the PLL chains to fold regularly as a requirement of optimal electrostatic interactions. Further facilitated by hydrogen bonding, the through-space conjugation (TSC) of orderly aligned electron-rich O and N atoms leads to CTE-based CPL, which is capable of transferring energy to an acceptor via a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, making it possible to develop environmentally friendly and economic CPL from sustainable and renewable materials.

Metal Cation-Responsive and Excitation-Dependent Nontraditional Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogels for Multidimensional Information Encryption

Fluorescent polymeric hydrogels especially multicolor fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (MFPHs) have important applications in information storage, encryption, and encoding. MFPHs are generally prepared by incorporating multiple traditional fluorescent materials into hydrogels. In recent years, nontraditional luminescent polymers without any traditional π-conjugated chromophores have received increasing attention. Here, we report a novel type of nontraditional MFPHs prepared by in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) in the presence of poly(itaconic acid) (PITAc). The hydrogen-bonded mechanically strong PAAm/PITAc hydrogels show strong intrinsic fluorescence, and the fluorescence emission is excitation-dependent and metal cation-responsive. More impressively, the hydrogels treated with metal cations also possess excitation-dependent fluorescence. We developed a multi-ion inkjet printing (MIIP) technique to print texts or designed patterns onto the hydrogel surface using different metal cation solutions as inks, and then variable texts or patterns appear under the irradiation of UV, violet, and blue lights. Patterns can be further changed by selective printing, erasing, or reprinting on some regions. Therefore, multidimensional information encryption is achieved. This work provides a new strategy for preparing MFPHs for wide applications.

Assemblies of Polyacrylonitrile-Derived Photoactive Polymers as Blue and Green Light Photo-Cocatalysts for Cu-Catalyzed ATRP in Water and Organic Solvents

Photoluminescent nanosized quasi-spherical polymeric assemblies prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), ht-PLPPAN, were demonstrated to have the ability to photo-induce atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) catalyzed by low, parts per million concentrations of CuII complex with tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA). Such photo induced ATRP reactions of acrylate and methacrylate monomers were performed in water or organic solvents, using ht-PLPPAN as the photo-cocatalyst under blue or green light irradiation. Mechanistic studies indicate that ht-PLPPAN helps to sustain the polymerization by facilitating the activation of alkyl bromide species by two modes: 1) green or blue light-driven photoreduction of the CuII catalyst to the activating CuI form, and 2) direct activation of dormant alkyl bromide species which occurs only under blue light. The photoreduction of the CuII complex by ht-PLPPAN was confirmed by linear sweep voltammetry performed under illumination. Analysis of the polymerization kinetics in aqueous media indicated even though CuI complexes comprised only 1-1.4% of all Cu species at equilibrium, they exhibited high activation rate constant and activated the alkyl bromide initiators five to six orders of magnitude faster than ht-PLPPAN.

Dramatically Enhanced and Red-shifted Photoluminescence Achieved by Introducing an Electron-withdrawing Group into a Non-traditional Luminescent Small Organic Compound

Small organic compounds without any traditional fluorescent chromophores are generally non-emissive, and only very few are reported to emit weak blue fluorescence. Here we synthesized a non-traditional luminescent small organic compound N-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)acrylamide (TFAM) with dramatically enhanced and red-shifted photoluminescence by introducing a strong electron-withdrawing group into acrylamide (AM). Very impressively, TFAM emits cyan (472 nm) and yellow-green (560 nm) fluorescence in solutions and solid state, respectively. TFAM also shows aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) and excitation-dependent fluorescence (EDF) characteristics, as well as temperature and metal cations-responsive fluorescence. Theoretical calculations show that the introduction of electron-withdrawing group leads to a lower energy gap between the HOMO-LUMO energy levels in TFAM than in AM. And strong cooperative hydrogen bonds are formed in TFAM molecules, resulting in rigidification of molecular conformations. The study provides a strategy for preparing non-traditional luminescent compounds with enhanced and red-shifted photoluminescence.

Seeking Aggregation-Induced Emission Materials in Food: Oat β-Glucan and Its Diverse Applications

With the basic understanding and broad application prospects of luminescent materials, the emission mechanism of unconventional luminescent agents has been revealed gradually. Here, we report a non-conjugated biomass material, oat β-glucan (oat-β-Glu), which actually does not emit light in a dilute solution but emits significantly when forming aggregates. Inherently visible emission of oat-β-Glu from the concentrated solutions and solid state could be observed. In addition, we have observed room temperature phosphorescence in oat-β-Glu powders, which is also unusual in pure organic materials. It can be proposed that the luminescence property of oat-β-Glu originates from the spatial conjugation of the oxygen atoms of oat-β-Glu. This clustering-triggered emission mechanism may well be expanded to other unconventional biomacromolecules, inspiring the rational design of luminescent agents. Due to its good biocompatibility and intrinsic emission characteristics, oat-β-Glu has shown great potential application prospects in bioimaging and biosensors.

Seeking brightness from nature: Sustainable AIE macromolecule with clustering-triggered emission of xanthan gum and its multiple applications

Unconventional biomacromolecule luminescent agents have attracted widespread attention due to the potential applications in diverse fields. In order to explore new luminescent agents and gain a comprehensive understanding of their emission mechanism, the emission behavior of xanthan gum was investigated. Xanthan gum shown obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics in concentration solution. Moreover, xanthan gum has shown potential values in intracellular imaging and can be used as a biosensor for detecting Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in human serum.

The bright fluorescence of non-aromatic molecules in aqueous solution originates from pH-induced CTE behavior

Non-aromatic fluorescent materials with inherent visible light emission have received widespread attention. In this work, a biomimetic fluorescent molecule CA-AEP with a dipeptide structure is introduced. CA-AEP will emit bright biomimetic fluorescence in aqueous solutions by adjusting the pH, which has never been reported. This unique luminescent characteristic can be rationalized by the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. In addition, CA-AEP can be used to monitor the maximum dynamic pH in the alkaline range of aqueous systems. Finally, the cytotoxicity assay to A549 cells showed that CA-AEP was non-toxic. Therefore, this work provides a new type of luminogen, which has potential application prospects in the field of environmental monitoring and cell biology.

Photoluminescence of Tilapia skin collagen: Aggregation-induced emission with clustering triggered emission mechanism and its multiple applications

There is an urgent need for natural sources of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials which have good water solubility, biocompatibility, and can be produced in large quantities. Here, Tilapia skin collagen (Tsc) is a very abundant protein in nature, with solid-phase and solution-state fluorescence emission effect and its multiple applications was explored. Due to Tsc was in high concentration or aggregation state which shown AIE property. This obvious emission can be account for clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. The photoluminescence property of Tsc not only provide a deeper understanding of the emission characteristics of proteins, but also has important guiding significance for further elucidating the basis of fluorescence properties.

Significantly Red-Shifted Emissions of Nonconventional AIE Polymers Containing Zwitterionic Components

Nonconventional luminescence polymers without any aromatic structures have attracted great interest from researchers due to their special structure and excellent biocompatibility. However, these materials mostly emit in the blue or green region, in which preparation of materials with long-wavelength (especially near-infrared) emission is still a great challenge. In this work, it is found that 2-(dimethyl amino) ethyl methacrylate (DMA) and itaconic anhydride (ITA) undergo a ring-opening reaction at room temperature, and subsequently generate zwitterionic compound (IDMA). Based on the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism, ionic bond can effectively promote the isolated electron-rich chromophores to form new emissive clusters with extended electron delocalization. Herein, two oligomers (P1 and P2) with different fluorescence emissions by controlling the concentration of zwitterionic monomers before polymerization are synthesized. It is worth noting that the maximum emission wavelength of P2 at high concentration is up to 712 nm, which is very rare in previous reports. In addition, the resulting oligomer (P2) shows typical aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE), excitation-dependent fluorescence, temperature-sensitive emission, and solvatochromism. The cytotoxicity assay demonstrates that P2 was low toxic to Huh7 and LM3 cells, and suitable for cell imaging. This research provides the possibility for rational molecular design and the feasibility of luminescence regulation.

Michael Polyaddition Approach Towards Sulfur Enriched Nonaromatic Polymers with Fluorescence-Phosphorescence Dual Emission

Nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers have attracted great attention due to their intriguing photophysical properties and promising implications in optoelectronic and biological areas. The luminescence from these nonconventional luminophores can be well rationalized by the clustering-triggered emission mechanism. Sulfur, although as an n-electron-rich element with big radius, is not been widely utilized in construction of nonconventional luminophores despite of its potential competitiveness in nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers. Herein, the "click" type Michael polyaddition is utilized to construct sulfur-bearing nonconventional luminophores, and two sulfur enriched nonaromatic poly(thioether sulfone)s (PES) are obtained, which demonstrate fluorescence-phosphorescence dual emission. More investigations concerning the monomer of bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane are further proceeded to support acquired results. Finally, the application of explosive detection by the prepared PES is also conducted.

Recent Advances in Clusteroluminescence

Clusteroluminescence is a phenomenon whereby the aggregation or clustering of non-conjugated electron-rich units leads to the emission of light at long wavelengths. This phenomenon was first discovered in poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. In recent years, clusteroluminescence has attracted growing research interest and its photophysical properties and mechanism have been thoroughly studied. In this review, we first briefly introduce the development of different types of clusteroluminogens. Then we highlight recent developments in clusteroluminescence, including mechanistic studies, the disclosure of room-temperature phosphorescence, and the extension of emission to the longer-wavelength region. Lastly, we demonstrate a few applications in various fields. With advantages such as being earth-abundant, biocompatible and biodegradable, clusteroluminogens are envisioned to be commonplace in the future.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Fluorescent Gels: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

The development of fluorescent gels, if not the current focus, is at the center of recent efforts devoted to the invention of a new generation of gels. Fluorescent gels have numerous properties that are intrinsic to the gel structure, with additional light-emitting properties making them attractive for different applications. This review focuses on current studies associated with the development of fluorescent gels using aggregation-induced emission fluorophores (AIEgens) to ultimately suggest new directions for future research. Here, we discuss major drawbacks of the methodologies used frequently for the fabrication of fluorescent gels using traditional fluorophores compared to those using AIEgens. The fabrication strategies to develop AIE-based fluorescent gels, including physical mixing, soaking, self-assembly, noncovalent interactions, and permanent chemical reactions, are discussed thoroughly. New and recent findings on developing AIE-active gels are explained. Specifically, physically prepared AIE-based gels including supramolecular, ionic, and chemically prepared AIE-based gels are discussed. In addition, the intrinsic fluorescent properties of natural gels, known as clustering-triggered fluorescent gel, and new and recent relevant findings published in peer-reviewed journals are explained. This review also revealed the biomedical applications of AIE-based fluorescent hydrogels including drug delivery, biosensors, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. In conclusion, the current research situation and future directions are identified.
