TiL4 -Coordinated Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots as an Efficient Contrast Agent for In Vivo Photoacoustic Imaging of Cancer

MXenes: Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Applications in Ultrafast Photonics

Recently, 2D materials are in great demand for various applications such as optical devices, supercapacitors, sensors, and biomedicine. MXenes as a kind of novel 2D material have attracted considerable research interest due to their outstanding mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Especially, the excellent nonlinear optical response enables them to be potential candidates for the applications in ultrafast photonics. Here, a review of MXenes synthesis, optical properties, and applications in ultrafast lasers is presented. First, aqueous acid etching and chemical vapor deposition methods for preparing MXenes are introduced, in which the storage stability and challenges of the existing synthesis techniques are also discussed. Then, the optical properties of MXenes are discussed specifically, including plasmonic properties, optical detection, photothermal effects, and ultrafast dynamics. Furthermore, the typical ultrafast pulsed lasers enabled by MXene-based saturable absorbers operated at different wavelength regions are summarized. Finally, a summary and outlook on the development of MXenes is presented in the perspectives section.

Nonlinear Photonics Using Low-Dimensional Metal-Halide Perovskites: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites have exhibited significantly superior nonlinear optical properties compared to traditional semiconductor counterparts, thanks to their peculiar physical and electronic structures. Their exceptional nonlinear optical characteristics make them excellent candidates for revolutionizing widespread applications. However, the research of nonlinear photonics based on low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites is in its infancy. There is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth summary of this research realm. Here, the state-of-the-art research progress related to third-and higher-order nonlinear optical properties of low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites with diverse crystal structures from 3D down to 0D, together with their practical applications, is summarized comprehensively. Critical discussions are offered on the fundamental mechanisms beneath their exceptional nonlinear optical performance from the physics viewpoint, attempting to disclose the role of intrinsic attributes (e.g., composition, bandgap, size, shape, and structure) and external modulation strategies (e.g., developing core-shell structures, transition metal ion doping, and hybridization with dielectric microspheres) in tuning the response. Additionally, their potential applications in nonlinear photonics, nonlinear optoelectronics, and biophotonics are systematically and thoroughly summed up and categorized. Lastly, insights into the current technical challenges and future research opportunities of nonlinear photonics based on low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites are provided.

Current Advances in Black Phosphorus-Based Drug Delivery Systems for Cancer Therapy

Cancer has been one of the major threats to the lives of human beings for centuries. Traditional therapy is more or less faced with certain defects, such as poor targeting, easy degradation, high side effects, etc. Therefore, in order to improve the treatment efficiency of drugs, an intelligent drug delivery system (DDS) is considered as a promising solution strategy. Due to their special structure and large specific surface area, 2D materials are considered to be a good platform for drug delivery. Black phosphorus (BP), as a new star of the 2D family, is recommended to have the potential to construct DDS by virtue of its outstanding photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and biodegradable properties. This tutorial review is intended to provide an introduction of the current advances in BP-based DDSs for cancer therapy, which covers topics from its construction, classified by the types of platforms, to the stimuli-responsive controlled drug release. Moreover, their cancer therapy applications including mono-, bi-, and multi-modal synergistic cancer therapy as well as the research of biocompatibility are also discussed. Finally, the current status and future prospects of BP-based DDSs for cancer therapy are summarized.

Coordination-Driven Enhancement of Radiosensitization by Black Phosphorus via Regulating Tumor Metabolism

Coordination-driven surface modification is an effective strategy to achieve nanosystem functionalization and improved physicochemical performance. Black phosphorus (BP)-based nanomaterials demonstrate great potential in cancer therapy, but their poor stability, low X-ray mass attenuation coefficient, and nonselectivity limit the application in radiotherapy. Herein, we used unsaturated iridium complex to coordinate with BP nanosheets to synthesize a two-dimensional layered nanosystem (RGD-Ir@BP) with higher biostability. Ir complex improves the photoelectric properties and photoinduced charge carrier dynamics of BP, hence Ir@BP generated more singlet oxygen after X-ray irradiation. In in vivo experiments, with X-ray irradiation, RGD-Ir@BP effectively inhibited nasopharyngeal carcinoma tumor growth but with minor side effects. Additionally, based on untargeted metabolomics analysis, the combined treatment specifically down-regulated the tumor proliferative mark of prostaglandin E2 in cancer cells. In general, this study provides a design strategy of high-performance coordination-driven BP-based nanosensitizer in cancer radiotherapy.

Broadband Nonlinear Photonics in Few-Layer Borophene

In this paper, 2D borophene is synthesized through a liquid-phase exfoliation. The morphology and structure of as-prepared borophene are systemically analyzed, and the Z-scan is used to measure the nonlinear optical properties. It is found that the saturable absorber (SA) properties of borophene make it serve as an excellent broadband optical switch, which is strongly used for mode-locking in near- and mid-infrared laser systems. Ultrastable pulses with durations as short as 792 and 693 fs are successfully delivered at the central wavelengths of 1063 and 1560 nm, respectively. Furthermore, stable pulses at a wavelength of 1878 nm are demonstrated from a thulium mode-locked fiber laser based on the same borophene SA. This research reveals a significant potential for borophene used in lasers helping extending the frontiers of photonic technologies.

Boron Quantum Dots for Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Photothermal Therapy

Photothermal therapy is a new type of tumor therapy with great potential. An ideal photothermal therapy agent should have high photothermal conversion effect, low biological toxicity, and degradability. The development of novel photothermal therapy agents with these properties is of great demand. In this study, we synthesized boron quantum dots (BQDs) with an ultrasmall hydrodynamic diameter. Both in vitro and in vivo studies show that the as-synthesized BQDs have good biological safety, high photoacoustic imaging performance, and photothermal conversion ability, which can be used for photoacoustic imaging-guided photothermal agents for tumor treatment. Our investigations confirm that the BQDs hold great promise in tumor theranostic applications.

Black Phosphorus as Multifaceted Advanced Material Nanoplatforms for Potential Biomedical Applications

Black phosphorus is one of the emerging members of two-dimensional (2D) materials which has recently entered the biomedical field. Its anisotropic properties and infrared bandgap have enabled researchers to discover its applicability in several fields including optoelectronics, 3D printing, bioimaging, and others. Characterization techniques such as Raman spectroscopy have revealed the structural information of Black phosphorus (BP) along with its fundamental properties, such as the behavior of its photons and electrons. The present review provides an overview of synthetic approaches and properties of BP, in addition to a detailed discussion about various types of surface modifications available for overcoming the stability-related drawbacks and for imparting targeting ability to synthesized nanoplatforms. The review further gives an overview of multiple characterization techniques such as spectroscopic, thermal, optical, and electron microscopic techniques for providing an insight into its fundamental properties. These characterization techniques are not only important for the analysis of the synthesized BP but also play a vital role in assessing the doping as well as the structural integrity of BP-based nanocomposites. The potential role of BP and BP-based nanocomposites for biomedical applications specifically, in the fields of drug delivery, 3D printing, and wound dressing, have been discussed in detail to provide an insight into the multifunctional role of BP-based nanoplatforms for the management of various diseases, including cancer therapy. The review further sheds light on the role of BP-based 2D platforms such as BP nanosheets along with BP-based 0D platforms-i.e., BP quantum dots in the field of therapy and bioimaging of cancer using techniques such as photoacoustic imaging and fluorescence imaging. Although the review inculcates the multimodal therapeutic as well as imaging role of BP, there is still research going on in this field which will help in the development of BP-based theranostic platforms not only for cancer therapy, but various other diseases.

Multifunctional layered black phosphorene-based nanoplatform for disease diagnosis and treatment: a review

As an outstanding two-dimensional material, black phosphorene, has attracted significant attention in the biomedicine field due to its large surface area, strong optical absorption, distinct bioactivity, excellent biocompatibility, and high biodegradability. In this review, the preparation and properties of black phosphorene are summarized first. Thereafter, black phosphorene-based multifunctional platforms employed for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including cancer, bone injuries, brain diseases, progressive oxidative diseases, and kidney injury, are reviewed in detail. This review provides a better understanding of the exciting properties of black phosphorene, such as its high drug-loading efficiency, photothermal conversion capability, high 1O2 generation efficiency, and high electrical conductivity, as well as how these properties can be exploited in biomedicine. Finally, the research perspectives of black phosphorene are discussed.

Black phosphorus quantum dots encapsulated in anionic waterborne polyurethane nanoparticles for enhancing stability and reactive oxygen species generation for cancer PDT/PTT therapy

Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) with excellent biocompatibility, outstanding photothermal and photodynamic efficacies have attracted significant attention in cancer therapy. However, the low environmental stability and poor dispersity of BPQDs limit their practical applications. In the present work, biocompatible anionic waterborne polyurethane (WPU) nanoparticles were synthesized from castor oil to encapsulate the BPQDs. The WPU-BPQDs with a BPQDs loading capacity of about 13.8% (w/w) exhibited significantly improved dispersion and environmental stability without affecting the photothermal efficiency of BPQDs. Intriguingly, it was found that WPU encapsulation led to significant enhancement in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation of BPQDs, which indicated the enhanced photodynamic efficacy of the encapsulated BPQDs as compared to the bare BPQDs. The effect of solution pH on the ROS generation efficiency of BPQDs and the pH variation caused by BPQDs degradation was then investigated to explore the possible mechanism. In acidic solution, ROS generation was suppressed, while BPQDs degradation led to the acidification of the solution. Fortunately, after being encapsulated inside the WPU nanoparticles, the degradation rate of BPQDs became slower, while the acidic environment around BPQDs was favorably regulated by WPU nanoparticles having a special electrochemical double layer consisting of interior COO^- and exterior NH(Et₃)⁺, thus endowing the WPU-BPQDs-boosted production of ROS as compared to the bare BPQDs. Considering the undesired acidic tumor environment, this unique pH regulation effect of WPU-BPQDs would be beneficial for in vivo photodynamic efficacy. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that WPU-BPQDs could effectively improve photodynamic therapy (PDT) and maintain outstanding photothermal therapy (PTT) effects. Together with the excellent dispersity, biocompatibility, and easy biodegradability, WPU-BPQDs can be a promising agent for PDT/PTT cancer treatments.

Nonlinear optical absorption features in few-layered hybrid Ti3C2(OH)2/Ti3C2F2 MXene for optical pulse generation in the NIR region

In the present work, we report the structural properties of the two dimensional (2D) few-layered Ti₃C₂(OH)₂/Ti₃C₂F₂ hybrid MXene synthesized via the HF acid etching method. Various characterizations were exploited to demonstrate the 2D layered structural properties of the hybrid MXene membranes. The density functional theory (DFT) simulation indicated the hybrid MXene possessed the small enough band gap, which could benefit the nonlinear optical applications in the infrared region. By the conventional open-aperture Z-scan technique, typical nonlinear saturable features were measured. Consequently, the hybrid MXene membranes exhibited the excellent saturable absorption properties at 1 and 1.3 µm. As a saturable absorber, passively Q-switched Nd:YVO₄ lasers with the prepared hybrid MXene membranes were realized at 1 and 1.3 µm, respectively, producing the stable Q-switching pulse train with a shortest duration of 130 ns.

Antimonene Quantum Dots as an Emerging Fluorescent Nanoprobe for the pH-Mediated Dual-Channel Detection of Tetracyclines

Antimonene quantum dots (AMQDs) are attracting considerable attention due to their fascinating physicochemical properties. However, research on their semiconductor characteristics, especially the photoluminescence performance, is still in a preliminary stage and the experimental verification is scarcely reported, significantly restricting their further applications. Herein, the photoluminescence property of AMQDs is experimentally verified. The AMQDs are prepared by probe sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation and show robust blue fluorescence, and the photoluminescence is hardly affected by pH. In view of the derivatization reaction of tetracyclines (TET) at different pHs, AMQDs are developed as a pH-mediated dual-channel ratiometric fluorescent probe for TET detection. Under acidic conditions, the AMQDs' probe exhibits unique recognition behavior due to the inherent fluorescence of TET and the solvent-enhancing effect, that is, the fluorescence changes from blue to red. Under alkaline conditions, this fluorescent probe realizes the transition from blue to yellow-green because of the decomposition of TET. The limits of detection are 27 × 10^-9 and 74 × 10^-9 m, respectively. The high sensitivity and remarkable fluorescence changes make AMQDs ideal probes for TET sensing. Additionally, this is the first report on the photoluminescence property of AMQDs. It is believed that this work will open a new avenue for AMQDs in optical sensing fields.

Revival of Zeolite-Templated Nanocarbon Materials: Recent Advances in Energy Storage and Conversion

Nanocarbon materials represent one of the hottest topics in physics, chemistry, and materials science. Preparation of nanocarbon materials by zeolite templates has been developing for more than 20 years. In recent years, novel structures and properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons have been evolving and new applications are emerging in the realm of energy storage and conversion. Here, recent progress of zeolite-templated nanocarbons in advanced synthetic techniques, emerging properties, and novel applications is summarized: i) thanks to the diversity of zeolites, the structures of the corresponding nanocarbons are multitudinous; ii) by various synthetic techniques, novel properties of zeolite-templated nanocarbons can be achieved, such as hierarchical porosity, heteroatom doping, and nanoparticle loading capacity; iii) the applications of zeolite-templated nanocarbons are also evolving from traditional gas/vapor adsorption to advanced energy storage techniques including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, fuel cells, metal-O2 batteries, etc. Finally, a perspective is provided to forecast the future development of zeolite-templated nanocarbon materials.

Magnesium-doped Nanostructured Titanium Surface Modulates Macrophage-mediated Inflammatory Response for Ameliorative Osseointegration

Background

Next generation of coating materials on the surface of implants is designed with a paradigm shift from an inert material to an osteoimmunomodulatory material. Regulating immune response to biomedical implants through influencing the polarization of macrophage has been proven to be an effective strategy.

Methods

Through anodization and hydrothermal treatment, magnesium ion incorporated TiO₂ nanotube array (MgN) coating was fabricated on the surface of titanium and it is hypothesized that it has osteoimmunomodulatory properties. To verify this assumption, systematic studies were carried out by in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Results

Mg ion release behavior results showed that MgN coating was successfully fabricated on the surface of titanium using anodization and hydrothermal technology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the morphology of the MgN coating on the titanium. The expression of inflammation-related genes (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) was downregulated in MgN group compared with TiO₂ nanotube (NT) and blank Ti groups, but anti-inflammatory genes (IL-10 and IL-1ra) were remarkably upregulated in the MgN group. The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that MgN coating influenced macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype compared with NT and blank-Ti groups, which enhanced osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells rBMSCs in conditioned media (CM) generated by macrophages.

Conclusion

MgN coating on the titanium endowed the surface with immune-regulatory features and exerted an advantageous effect on osteogenesis, thereby providing excellent strategies for the surface modification of biomedical implants.

Redox responsive nanoparticle encapsulating black phosphorus quantum dots for cancer theranostics

Effective cancer treatment puts high demands for cancer theranostics. For cancer diagnostics, optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology (including photothermal optical coherence tomography (PT-OCT)) has been widely investigated since it induces changes in optical phase transitions in tissue through environmental changes (such as temperature change for PT-OCT). In this report, redox responsive nanoparticle encapsulating black phosphorus quantum dots was developed as a robust PT-OCT agent. Briefly, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are incorporated into cysteine-based poly-(disulfide amide) (Cys-PDSA) to form stable and biodegradable nanoagent. The excellent photothermal feature allows BPQD/Cys-PDSA nanoparticles (NPs) as a novel contrast agent for high-resolution PT-OCT bioimaging. The Cys-PDSA can rapidly respond to glutathione and effectively release BPQDs and drugs in vitro and in vivo. And the obtained NPs exhibit excellent near-infrared (NIR) photothermal transduction efficiency and drug delivery capacity that can serve as novel therapeutic platform, with very low chemo drug dosage and side effects. Both of the polymer and BPQD are degradable, indicating this platform is a rare PT-OCT agent that is completely biodegradable. Overall, our research highlights a biodegradable and biocompatible black phosphorus-based nanoagent for both cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Mediated Drug Release from Nanovehicles by Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots for Efficient Therapy of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an intractable disease involving a sticky mucus layer and nanoagents with mucus-penetrating capability offer a new way to deliver drugs. However, drug release from nanovehicles requires optimization to enhance the therapeutic effects of COPD therapy. Herein, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are combined with PEGylated chitosan nanospheres containing the antibiotic amikacin (termed PEG@CS/BPQDs-AM NPs). As a drug-delivery system, the hydrophilicity of PEG and positive charge of CS facilitate the penetration of nanovehicles through the mucus layer. The nanovehicles then adhere to the mucous membrane. Furthermore, the BPQDs degrade rapidly into nontoxic PO₄ ^3- and acidic H⁺ , thereby promoting the dissociation of PEGylated CS nanospheres, accelerating the release of AM, decreasing the vitality of biofilms for ease of eradication. Our results reveal that drug delivery mediated by BPQDs is a feasible and desirable strategy for precision medicine and promising for the clinical therapy of COPD.

Emerging metal ion-coordinated black phosphorus nanosheets and black phosphorus quantum dots with excellent stabilities

In this work, emerging metal ion-coordinated black phosphorus nanosheets (M@BPNSs) and quantum dots (M@BPQDs) were prepared via the sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation of bulk black phosphorus (BP) crystals in the presence of a metal ion (M) and solvothermal reaction of the exfoliated few-layer M@BP nanosheets. Based on theoretical calculations, a bonding mode exists between M and BP. Consequently, the adsorption energies of M on BP via the bonding mode are lower than that of M on BP via the non-bonding mode. Under the bonding mode, the adsorption energy of Zn2+ (-2.04 eV) on BP is lower than other M. Zn2+, serves as the preferred M and can be easily adsorbed on the surface of BP. We experimentally prepared emerging M@BPNSs and M@BPQDs, characterized, and compared various morphologies, microstructures and spectra under different conditions. It is verified, that the surface coordination of M with BP protects BP from oxidization and degradation of its nanostructures upon exposure to O2 and H2O. In comparison to the bare BPNSs, Zn@BPNSs showed high microstructural stability. Moreover, in comparison to bare BPQDs, Zn@BPQDs exhibited high colloidal stability and excellent stabilities with fluorescence and photothermal conversion performances. The long-term stabilities are due to the M-coordination with BP through P-M bonding on BP nanostructures. Thus, the excellent long-term stabilities in microstructure, fluorescence and photothermal conversion levels endow the emerging two-dimensional M@BPNSs and zero-dimensional M@BPQDs with great prospects towards promising applications, especially in electronics, optoelectronics, optical and biomedical fields.

A Non-Invasive Nanoprobe for In Vivo Photoacoustic Imaging of Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque

Vulnerable atherosclerotic (AS) plaque is the major cause of cardiovascular death. However, clinical methods cannot directly identify the vulnerable AS plaque at molecule level. Herein, osteopontin antibody (OPN Ab) and NIR fluorescence molecules of ICG co-assembled Ti₃ C₂ nanosheets are reported as an advanced nanoprobe (OPN Ab/Ti₃ C₂ /ICG) with enhanced photoacoustic (PA) performance for direct and non-invasive in vivo visual imaging of vulnerable AS plaque. The designed OPN Ab/Ti₃ C₂ /ICG nanoprobes successfully realize obvious NIR fluorescence imaging toward foam cells as well as the vulnerable AS plaque slices. After intravenous injection of OPN Ab/Ti₃ C₂ /ICG nanoprobes into AS model mice, in vivo imaging results show a significantly enhanced PA signal in the aortic arch accumulated with vulnerable plaque, well indicating the remarkable feasibility of OPN Ab/Ti₃ C₂ /ICG nanoprobes to distinguish the vulnerable AS plaque. The proposed OPN Ab/Ti₃ C₂ /ICG nanoprobes not only overcome the clinical difficulty to differentiate vulnerable plaque, but also achieve the non-invasively specific in vivo imaging of vulnerable AS plaque at molecule level, greatly promoting the innovation of cardiovascular diagnosis technology.

Recent Progress, Challenges, and Prospects in Two-Dimensional Photo-Catalyst Materials and Environmental Remediation

The successful photo-catalyst library gives significant information on feature that affects photo-catalytic performance and proposes new materials. Competency is considerably significant to form multi-functional photo-catalysts with flexible characteristics. Since recently, two-dimensional materials (2DMs) gained much attention from researchers, due to their unique thickness-dependent uses, mainly for photo-catalytic, outstanding chemical and physical properties. Photo-catalytic water splitting and hydrogen (H2) evolution by plentiful compounds as electron (e-) donors is estimated to participate in constructing clean method for solar H2-formation. Heterogeneous photo-catalysis received much research attention caused by their applications to tackle numerous energy and environmental issues. This broad review explains progress regarding 2DMs, significance in structure, and catalytic results. We will discuss in detail current progresses of approaches for adjusting 2DMs-based photo-catalysts to assess their photo-activity including doping, hetero-structure scheme, and functional formation assembly. Suggested plans, e.g., doping and sensitization of semiconducting 2DMs, increasing electrical conductance, improving catalytic active sites, strengthening interface coupling in semiconductors (SCs) 2DMs, forming nano-structures, building multi-junction nano-composites, increasing photo-stability of SCs, and using combined results of adapted approaches, are summed up. Hence, to further improve 2DMs photo-catalyst properties, hetero-structure design-based 2DMs' photo-catalyst basic mechanism is also reviewed.

Intelligent Drug Delivery Microparticles with Visual Stimuli-Responsive Structural Color Changes

BACKGROUND

Particle-based drug delivery systems (DDSs) have a demonstrated value for drug discovery and development. However, some problems remain to be solved, such as limited stimuli, visual-monitoring.

AIM

To develop an intelligent multicolor DDSs with both near-infrared (NIR) controlled release and macroscopic color changes.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Microparticles comprising GO/pNIPAM/PEGDA composite hydrogel inverse opal scaffolds, with dextran and calcium alginate hydrogel were synthesized using SCCBs as the template. The morphology of microparticle was observed under scanning electron microscopy, and FITC-dextran-derived green fluorescence images were determined using a confocal laser scanning microscope. During the drug release, FITC-dextran-derived green fluorescence images were captured using fluorescent inverted microscope. The relationship between the power of NIR and the drug release rate was obtained using the change in optical density (OD) values. Finally, the amount of drug released could be estimated quantitatively used the structural color or the reflection peak position.

RESULTS

A fixed concentration 8% (v/v) of PEGDA and 4mg/mL of GO was chosen as the optimal concentration based on the balance between appropriate volume shrinkage and structure color. The FITC-dextran was uniformly encapsulated in the particles by using 0.2 wt% sodium alginate. The microcarriers shrank because of the photothermal response and the intrinsic fluorescence intensity of FITC-dextran in the microparticles gradually decreased at the same time, indicating drug release. With an increasing duration of NIR irradiation, the microparticles gradually shrank, the reflection peak shifted toward blue and the structural color changed from red to orange, yellow, green, cyan, and blue successively. The drug release quantity can be predicted by the structural color of microparticles.

CONCLUSION

The multicolor microparticles have great potential in drug delivery systems because of its vivid reporting color, excellent photothermal effect, and the good stimuli responsivity.

Engineering Mono-Chalcogen Nanomaterials for Omnipotent Anticancer Applications: Progress and Challenges

Belonging to the chalcogen group, the elements selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) are located in Group VI-A of the periodic table. Zero-valent nanodimensioned Se (nano-Se) and Te (nano-Te) have displayed important biomedical applications in recent years. The past two decades have witnessed an explosion in novel cancer treatment strategies using nano-Se and nano-Te as aggressive weapons against tumors. Indeed, they are both inorganic nanomedicines that suppress tumor cell proliferation, diffusion, and metastasis. Abundant synthesis strategies for rational and precise surface decoration of nano-Se and nano-Te make them significant players in resisting cancers by means of powerful multi-modal treatment methods. This review focuses on the design and engineering of nano-Se- and nano-Te-based nanodelivery systems and their precise uses in cancer treatment. The corresponding anticancer molecular mechanisms of nano-Se and nano-Te are discussed in detail. Given their different photo-induced behaviors, the presence or absence of near infrared illumination is used as a defining characteristic when describing the anticancer applications of nano-Se and nano-Te. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of nano-Se and nano-Te are summarized and highlighted.

Two-Dimensional Theranostic Nanomaterials in Cancer Treatment: State of the Art and Perspectives

As the combination of therapies enhances the performance of biocompatible materials in cancer treatment, theranostic therapies are attracting increasing attention rather than individual approaches. In this review, we describe a variety of two-dimensional (2D) theranostic nanomaterials and their efficacy in ablating tumors. Though many literature reports are available to demonstrate the potential application of 2D nanomaterials, we have reviewed here cancer-treating therapies based on such multifunctional nanomaterials abstracting the content from literature works which explain both the in vitro and in vivo level of applications. In addition, we have included a discussion about the future direction of 2D nanomaterials in the field of theranostic cancer treatment.

Photothermal Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Black Phosphorus/Gold Nanocomposites against Pathogenic Bacteria

Black phosphorus (BP) as a layered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor material with a tunable band gap has attracted growing attention for promising applications in diverse fields including biotechnology owing to its excellent physical and chemical properties. In this study, BP crystals were synthesized using a chemical vapor transport method and exfoliated into BP nanosheets in deoxygenated water or hexane. Next, monodisperse Au nanoparticles that were synthesized using a surfactant-assisted chemical reduction method were assembled on exfoliated BP nanosheets hexane to yield BP/Au nanocomposites. The photothermal antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of BP nanosheets and BP/Au nanocomposites were investigated against Enterococcus faecalis, a pathogenic biofilm-forming bacterium, by studying the photothermal effect and bacterial growth curve and using colony counting and live/dead fluorescence staining methods under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Thanks to the higher photothermal conversion efficiency of BP/Au nanocomposites than that of bare BP nanosheets under NIR light irradiation, they destructed the bacterial cell membrane more efficiently than bare BP with the biofilm inhibition rate of 58%. It should be noted that this is the first study on the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of BP/Au nanocomposites via a photothermal process under NIR light irradiation. This work shows the potential of BP/Au nanocomposites in fighting against pathogenic bacteria and paves the way for the exploration of antibacterial platforms based on the biocompatible 2D semiconductor BP.

2D materials beyond graphene toward Si integrated infrared optoelectronic devices

Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, it has become a worldwide hot topic due to its fascinating properties. However, the zero band gap and weak light absorption of graphene strictly restrict its applications in optoelectronic devices. In this regard, semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) materials are thought to be promising candidates for next-generation optoelectronic devices. Infrared (IR) light has gained intensive attention due to its vast applications, including night vision, remote sensing, target acquisition, optical communication, etc. Consequently, the generation, modulation, and detection of IR light are crucial for practical applications. Due to the van der Waals interaction between 2D materials and Si, the lattice mismatch of 2D materials and Si can be neglected; consequently, the integration process can be achieved easily. Herein, we review the recent progress of semiconducting 2D materials in IR optoelectronic devices. Firstly, we introduce the background and motivation of the review. Then, the suitable materials for IR applications are presented, followed by a comprehensive review of the applications of 2D materials in light emitting devices, optical modulators, and photodetectors. Finally, the problems encountered and further developments are summarized. We believe that milestone investigations of IR optoelectronics based on 2D materials beyond graphene will emerge soon, which will bring about great industrial revelations in 2D material-based integrated nanodevice commercialization.

Marriage of black phosphorus and Cu2+ as effective photothermal agents for PET-guided combination cancer therapy

The use of photothermal agents (PTAs) in cancer photothermal therapy (PTT) has shown promising results in clinical studies. The rapid degradation of PTAs may address safety concerns but usually limits the photothermal stability required for efficacious treatment. Conversely, PTAs with high photothermal stability usually degrade slowly. The solutions that address the balance between the high photothermal stability and rapid degradation of PTAs are rare. Here, we report that the inherent Cu²⁺-capturing ability of black phosphorus (BP) can accelerate the degradation of BP, while also enhancing photothermal stability. The incorporation of Cu²⁺ into BP@Cu nanostructures further enables chemodynamic therapy (CDT)-enhanced PTT. Moreover, by employing ⁶⁴Cu²⁺, positron emission tomography (PET) imaging can be achieved for in vivo real-time and quantitative tracking. Therefore, our study not only introduces an “ideal” PTA that bypasses the limitations of PTAs, but also provides the proof-of-concept application of BP-based materials in PET-guided, CDT-enhanced combination cancer therapy.

A balance between high stability and rapid degradation is required for effective photothermal anti-cancer agents. Here, the authors use Cu²⁺ to accelerate the degradation of black phosphorus nanosheets while enhancing its photothermal ability and apply this material for PET-guided, CDT-enhanced combination cancer therapy in mice.

Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus: An Emerging Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (2D BP), an emerging material, has aroused tremendous interest once discovered. This is due to the fact that it integrates unprecedented properties of other 2D materials, such as tunable bandgap structures, outstanding electrochemical properties, anisotropic mechanical, thermodynamic, and photoelectric properties, making it of great research value in many fields. The emergence of 2D BP has greatly promoted the development of electrochemical energy storage devices, especially lithium-ion batteries. However, in the application of 2D BP, there are still some problems to be solved urgently, such as the difficulty in the synthesis of large-scale high-quality phosphorene, poor environmental stability, and the volume expansion as electrode materials. Herein, according to the latest research progress of 2D BP in the field of energy storage, we systematically summarize and compare the preparation methods of phosphorene and discuss the basic structure and properties of BP, especially the environmental instability and passivation techniques. In particular, the practical application and challenges of 2D BP as anode material for lithium-ion batteries are analyzed in detail. Finally, some personal perspectives on the future development and challenges of BP are presented.

Solution-gated transistors of two-dimensional materials for chemical and biological sensors: status and challenges

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been the focus of materials research for many years due to their unique fascinating properties and large specific surface area (SSA). They are very sensitive to the analytes (ions, glucose, DNA, protein, etc.), resulting in their wide-spread development in the field of sensing. New 2D materials, as the basis of applications, are constantly being fabricated and comprehensively studied. In a variety of sensing applications, the solution-gated transistor (SGT) is a promising biochemical sensing platform because it can work at low voltage in different electrolytes, which is ideal for monitoring body fluids in wearable electronics, e-skin, or implantable devices. However, there are still some key challenges, such as device stability and reproducibility, that must be faced in order to pave the way for the development of cost-effective, flexible, and transparent SGTs with 2D materials. In this review, the device preparation, device physics, and the latest application prospects of 2D materials-based SGTs are systematically presented. Besides, a bold perspective is also provided for the future development of these devices.

2D Material Optoelectronics for Information Functional Device Applications: Status and Challenges

Graphene and the following derivative 2D materials have been demonstrated to exhibit rich distinct optoelectronic properties, such as broadband optical response, strong and tunable light-mater interactions, and fast relaxations in the flexible nanoscale. Combining with optical platforms like fibers, waveguides, grating, and resonators, these materials has spurred a variety of active and passive applications recently. Herein, the optical and electrical properties of graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXene, and their derivative van der Waals heterostructures are comprehensively reviewed, followed by the design and fabrication of these 2D material-based optical structures in implementation. Next, distinct devices, ranging from lasers to light emitters, frequency convertors, modulators, detectors, plasmonic generators, and sensors, are introduced. Finally, the state-of-art investigation progress of 2D material-based optoelectronics offers a promising way to realize new conceptual and high-performance applications for information science and nanotechnology. The outlook on the development trends and important research directions are also put forward.

Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots Cause Nephrotoxicity in Organoids, Mice, and Human Cells

Quantum dots (QDs) have numerous potential applications in lighting, engineering, and biomedicine. QDs are mainly excreted through the kidney due to their ultrasmall sizes; thus, the kidneys are target organs of QD toxicity. Here, an organoid screening platform is established and used to study the nephrotoxicity of QDs. Organoids are templated from monodisperse microfluidic Matrigel droplets and found to be homogeneous in both tissue structure and functional recapitulation within a population and suitable for the quantitative screening of toxic doses. Kidney organoids are proved displaying higher sensitivity than 2D-cultured cell lines. Similar to metal-containing QDs, black phosphorus (BP)-QDs are found to have moderate toxicity in the kidney organoids. The nephrotoxicity of BP-QDs are validated in both mice and human renal tubular epithelial cells. BP-QDs are also found to cause insulin insensitivity and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the kidney. Furthermore, ER stress-related IRE1α signaling is shown to mediate renal toxicity and insulin insensitivity caused by BP-QDs. In summary, this work demonstrates the use of constructed kidney organoids as 3D high-throughput screening tools to assess nanosafety and further illuminates the effects and molecular mechanisms of BP-QD nephrotoxicity. The findings will hopefully enable improvement of the safety of BP-QD applications.

Emerging pnictogen-based 2D semiconductors: sensing and electronic devices

Pnictogens are an intensively studied group of monoelemental two-dimensional materials. This group of elements consists of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. In this group, the elements adopt two different layered structural allotropes, orthorhombic structure with true van der Waals layered interactions and rhombohedral structure, where covalent interactions between layers are also present. The orthorhombic structure is well known for phosphorus and arsenic, and the rhombohedral structure is the most thermodynamically stable allotropic modification of arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. Due to the electronic structure of pnictogen layers and their semiconducting character, these materials have huge application potential for electronic devices such as transistors and sensors including photosensitive devices as well as gas and electrochemical sensors. While photodetection and gas sensing applications are often related to lithography processed materials, chemical sensing proceeds in a liquid environment (either aqueous or non-aqueous) and can be influenced by surface oxidation of these materials. In this review, we explore the current state of pnictogen applications in sensing and electronic devices including transistors, photodetectors, gas sensors, and chemical/electrochemical sensors.

Engineering of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides MXenes for cancer therapeutics and diagnostics

The 2D layered structured material with unique surface terminations and properties have showed great potential in variety of biomedical research fields including drug delivery and cancer therapeutics which forms the major focus of this review. MXenes as a multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, has also received momentous research interest in oncology resulting from its intriguing structure and fascinating properties of magnetism and photodynamic properties such as luminescent, conductivity, magnetism, non-toxicity and its bio compatibility. This reported review intends to cover exclusively the synthesis and utilization of MXenes in oncological applications, and subsequently its future outlook in cancer therapeutic, diagnostic and theranostics. The versatile and unique physio-chemistry of MXenes permits fine tuning of its properties towards oncological applications ranging from the cancer therapeutic (e.g., photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy) to cancer imaging (e.g., CT/MRI/PA imaging) as well as cancer theranostic applications. We have started the discussion by portraying the broad picture of physio-chemical aspects of MXenes followed by its drug delivery functionalities. Subsequently, ROS mediated therapeutic strategies of photodynamic therapy and radiotherapy as well as light triggered functionalities of MXenes were detailed comprehensively. In the middle of the gallery, various imaging and sensing aspects of MXenes were elucidated. Finally, we have concluded by explaining the combined therapy and diagnostic functions (theranostics) of MXenes. To put it in perspective, the current challenges and new opportunities in MXenes also discussed will give great realistic insights to motivate further research in realizing MXene as an intelligent oncological tool.

ROS-Mediated Selective Killing Effect of Black Phosphorus: Mechanistic Understanding and Its Guidance for Safe Biomedical Applications

Black phosphorus (BP)-based nanomaterials have distinguished advantages and potential applications in various biomedical fields. However, their biological effects in physiological systems remain largely unexplored. Here, we systematically revealed a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated mechanism for the selective killing of cancer cells by BP-based nanosheets. The treatment with BP-based materials can induce higher levels of ROS in cancer cells than in normal cells, leading to significant changes in the cytoskeleton, cell cycle arrest, DNA damage, and apoptosis in tumor cell lines. We revealed that the decreased superoxide dismutase activity by lipid peroxides could be an essential mechanism of the selectively higher ROS generation induced by BP-based nanosheets in cancer cells. In addition, the selective killing effect only occurred within a certain dosage range (named "SK range" in this study). Once exceeding the SK range, BP-based materials could also induce a high ROS production in normal tissues, leading to detectable DNA damage and pathological characteristics in normal organs and raising safety concerns. These findings not only shed light on a new mechanism for the selective killing of cancer cells by BP-based materials but also provide deep insights into the safe use of BP-based therapies.

Recent Advances in Strain-Induced Piezoelectric and Piezoresistive Effect-Engineered 2D Semiconductors for Adaptive Electronics and Optoelectronics

The development of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors has attracted widespread attentions in the scientific community and industry due to their ultra-thin thickness, unique structure, excellent optoelectronic properties and novel physics. The excellent flexibility and outstanding mechanical strength of 2D semiconductors provide opportunities for fabricated strain-sensitive devices and utilized strain tuning their electronic and optic-electric performance. The strain-engineered one-dimensional materials have been well investigated, while there is a long way to go for 2D semiconductors. In this review, starting with the fundamental theories of piezoelectric and piezoresistive effect resulted by strain, following we reviewed the recent simulation works of strain engineering in novel 2D semiconductors, such as Janus 2D and 2D-Xene structures. Moreover, recent advances in experimental observation of strain tuning PL spectra and transport behavior of 2D semiconductors are summarized. Furthermore, the applications of strain-engineered 2D semiconductors in sensors, photodetectors and nanogenerators are also highlighted. At last, we in-depth discussed future research directions of strain-engineered 2D semiconductor and related electronics and optoelectronics device applications.

Graphene and other 2D materials: a multidisciplinary analysis to uncover the hidden potential as cancer theranostics

Cancer represents one of the main causes of death in the world; hence the development of more specific approaches for its diagnosis and treatment is urgently needed in clinical practice. Here we aim at providing a comprehensive review on the use of 2-dimensional materials (2DMs) in cancer theranostics. In particular, we focus on graphene-related materials (GRMs), graphene hybrids, and graphdiyne (GDY), as well as other emerging 2DMs, such as MXene, tungsten disulfide (WS2), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), black phosphorus (BP), silicene, antimonene (AM), germanene, biotite (black mica), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and others. The results reported in the scientific literature in the last ten years (>200 papers) are dissected here with respect to the wide variety of combinations of imaging methodologies and therapeutic approaches, including drug/gene delivery, photothermal/photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, and immunotherapy. We provide a unique multidisciplinary approach in discussing the literature, which also includes a detailed section on the characterization methods used to analyze the material properties, highlighting the merits and limitations of the different approaches. The aim of this review is to show the strong potential of 2DMs for use as cancer theranostics, as well as to highlight issues that prevent the clinical translation of these materials. Overall, we hope to shed light on the hidden potential of the vast panorama of new and emerging 2DMs as clinical cancer theranostics.

Coordination-Driven Hierarchical Assembly of Hybrid Nanostructures Based on 2D Materials

2D materials have received tremendous scientific and engineering interests due to their remarkable properties and broad-ranging applications such as energy storage and conversion, catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, and so forth. To further enhance their performance and endow them with new functions, 2D materials are proposed to hybridize with other nanostructured building blocks, resulting in hybrid nanostructures with various morphologies and structures. The properties and functions of these hybrid nanostructures depend strongly on the interfacial interactions between 2D materials and other building blocks. Covalent and coordination bonds are two strong interactions that hold high potential in constructing these robust hybrid nanostructures based on 2D materials. However, most 2D materials are chemically inert, posing problems for the covalent assembly with other building blocks. There are usually coordination atoms in most of 2D materials and their derivatives, thus coordination interaction as a strong interfacial interaction has attracted much attention. In this review, recent progress on the coordination-driven hierarchical assembly based on 2D materials is summarized, focusing on the synthesis approaches, various architectures, and structure-property relationship. Furthermore, insights into the present challenges and future research directions are also presented.

Advanced Black Phosphorus Nanomaterials for Bone Regeneration

Bone regeneration remains a great clinical challenge. Two-dimensional materials, especially graphene and its derivative graphene oxide, have been widely used for bone regeneration. Since its discovery in 2014, black phosphorus (BP) nanomaterials including BP nanosheets and BP quantum dots have attracted considerable scientific attention and are considered as prospective graphene substitutes. BP nanomaterials exhibit numerous advantages such as excellent optical and mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, excellent biocompatibility, and good biodegradation, all of which make them particularly attractive in biomedicine. In this review, we comprehensively summarize recent advances of BP-based nanomaterials in bone regeneration. The advantages are reviewed, the different synthesis methods of BP are summarized, and the applications to promote bone regeneration are highlighted. Finally, the existing challenges and perspectives of BP in bone regeneration are briefly discussed.

Recent advances in two-dimensional-material-based sensing technology toward health and environmental monitoring applications

Monitoring harmful and toxic chemicals, gases, microorganisms, and radiation has been a challenge to the scientific community for the betterment of human health and environment. Two-dimensional (2D)-material-based sensors are highly efficient and compatible with modern fabrication technology, which yield data that can be proficiently used for health and environmental monitoring. Graphene and its oxides, black phosphorus (BP), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), metal oxides, and other 2D nanomaterials have demonstrated properties that have been alluring for the manufacture of highly sensitive sensors due to their unique material properties arising from their inherent structures. This review summarizes the properties of 2D nanomaterials that can provide a platform to develop high-performance sensors. In this review, we have also discussed the advances made in the field of infrared photodetectors and electrochemical sensors and how the structural properties of 2D nanomaterials affect sensitivity and performance. Further, this review highlights 2D-nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors that can be used to check for contaminations from heavy metals, organic/inorganic compounds, poisonous gases, pesticides, bacteria, antibiotics, etc., in water or air, which are severe risks to human wellbeing as well as the environment. Moreover, the limitations, future prospects, and challenges for the development of sensors based on 2D materials are also discussed for future advancements.

Biodegradable and bioabsorbable sensors based on two-dimensional materials

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, including graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), have attracted considerable attention for the last decade due to their unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties. Recently, as their unique characteristics of biocompatibility and biodegradation are known, research on applying them in diagnostic and therapeutic applications has received considerable attention. This review provides a broad overview of recent reports on the biocompatibility and biodegradability of 2D materials and highlights recent progress in biodegradable and bioabsorbable sensors for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Black Phosphorus-Based Semiconductor Heterojunctions for Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Solar-to-hydrogen (H₂ ) conversion has been regarded as a sustainable and renewable technique to address aggravated environmental pollution and global energy crisis. The most critical aspect in this technology is to develop highly efficient and stable photocatalysts, especially metal-free photocatalysts. Recently, black phosphorus (BP), as a rising star 2D nanomaterial, has captured enormous attention in photocatalytic water splitting owing to its widespread optical absorption, adjustable direct band gap, and superior carrier migration characteristics. However, the rapid charge recombination of pristine BP has seriously limited its practical application as photocatalyst. The construction of BP-based semiconductor heterojunctions has been proven to be an effective strategy for enhancing the separation of photogenerated carriers. This Minireview attempts to summarize the recent progress in BP-based semiconductor heterojunctions for photocatalytic water splitting, including type-I and type-II heterojunctions, Z-Scheme systems, and multicomponent heterojunctions. Finally, a brief summary and perspective on the challenges and future directions in this field are also provided.

Recent advances in two-dimensional ferromagnetism: materials synthesis, physical properties and device applications

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism is critical for both scientific investigation and technological development owing to its low-dimensionality that brings in quantization of electronic states as well as free axes for device modulation. However, the scarcity of high-temperature 2D ferromagnets has been the obstacle of many research studies, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and thin-film spintronics. Indeed, in the case of the isotropic Heisenberg model with finite-range exchange interactions as an example, low-dimensionality is shown to be contraindicated with ferromagnetism. However, the advantages of low-dimensionality for micro-scale patterning could enhance the Curie temperature (T_C) of 2D ferromagnets beyond the T_C of bulk materials, opening the door for designing high-temperature ferromagnets in the 2D limit. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the field of 2D ferromagnets, including their material systems, physical properties, and potential device applications.

Recent advances in solution-processed photodetectors based on inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials

Due to their excellent and tailorable optoelectronic performance, low cost, facile fabrication, and compatibility with flexible substrates, solution-processed inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials have attracted extensive interest for next-generation photodetector applications. This review gives a comprehensive compilation of solution-processed photodetectors. The basic structures of the device and important parameters of photodetectors will be firstly summarized. Then the development of various solution processing technologies containing solution synthesis and liquid phase film-forming processes for the preparation of semiconductor films is described. From the materials science point of view, we give a comprehensive overview about the current status of solution processed semiconductor materials including inorganic and hybrid photo-active materials for the application of photodetectors. Moreover, challenges and future trends in the field of solution-processed photodetectors are proposed.

Advances in nanomaterials for photodynamic therapy applications: Status and challenges

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), as a non-invasive therapeutic modality that is alternative to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, is extensively investigated for cancer treatments. Although conventional organic photosensitizers (PSs) are still widely used and have achieved great progresses in PDT, the disadvantages such as hydrophobicity, poor stability within PDT environment and low cell/tissue specificity largely limit their clinical applications. Consequently, nano-agents with promising physicochemical and optical properties have emerged as an attractive alternative to overcome these drawbacks of traditional PSs. Herein, the up-to-date advances in the fabrication and fascinating applications of various nanomaterials in PDT have been summarized, including various types of nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials, and two-dimensional nanomaterials, etc. In addition, the current challenges for the clinical use of PDT, and the corresponding strategies to address these issues, as well as future perspectives on further improvement of PDT have also been discussed.
