Abstract
Recently, functional dressings that can protect the wound area from dehydration and bacterial infection and support healing have gained importance in place of passive dressings. This study aimed to develop temporary and regenerative xanthan/gelatin (XGH) and keratin/xanthan/gelatin hydrogels (KXGHs) that have high absorption capacity and applicability as a wound dressing that can provide local delivery of Vitamin C (VC). Firstly, xanthan/gelatin hydrogels were produced by crosslinking with different glycerol concentrations and characterized to determine the hydrogel composition. According to their weight ratios, xanthan, gelatin, and glycerol hydrogels are named. If their weight ratio is 1:1:2 (w/w/w), the group name is selected as X1:GEL1:GLY2. X1:GEL1:GLY2 hydrogel was selected for biocompatibility, mechanical property, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and porosity. The addition of keratin to X1:GEL1:GLY2 improved L929 fibroblasts viability and increased protein release. Water vapor transmission of XGHs and KXGHs was between 3059.09 ± 126 and 4523 ± 133 g m-2 d-1; therefore, they can be suitable for granulating, low to moderate exudate wounds. XGH and KXGHs loaded with VC had higher water uptake, making it more convenient for exudate wounds. VC was released for 100 h, and VC containing XGHs and KXGHs increased the collagen synthesis of L929 fibroblasts. All of the hydrogels (XGH, KXGH, and VC-KXGHs) inhibited the bacteria transmission. In conclusion, our results suggest that VC-XGH and VC-KXGH can be candidates for temporary wound dressing materials for skin wounds.

Abstract
In this study, Ag nanoparticles were firstly reduced on the surface of lignin nanoparticles (LNPAg) by direct reaction of silver nitrate without the use of a catalyst. Thermogravimetric analysis, Zeta potential and transmission electron microscopy measurements were performed to give evidence of the effectiveness of the reaction. After that, glutaraldehyde crosslinked PVA hydrogels, were produced by addition of unmodified LNP and Ag loaded LNP (LNPAg) in presence of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Thermal, mechanical, rheological, microstructural and biological anti-oxidative and anti-bacterial properties of the resulted hydrogels were investigated. It was proved that all the three nanofillers were homogeneously dispersed in PVA, and the pore diameter of the hydrogels was in the range of 0.5-2.0 μm. Nevertheless, the hydrogels showed high toughness, long-term and repeatable adhesiveness to a variety of substrates. In particular, composite hydrogels containing LNPAg nanoparticles showed excellent radical scavenging and antibacterial activities. Consequently, the effects of PVA-2CNC-2LNPAg on wound healing in mice model of full-thickness skin resection were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining, taking as a reference the PVA-2CNC-2LNP system. The results showed that the wound healing time of PVA-2CNC-2LNPAg group was faster than that of neat PVA and PVA-2CNC, highlighting the role of LNPAg in enhancing the contact-active anti-oxidative and antibacterial activities mechanism in composite hydrogels. We expected that PVA hydrogels incorporating LNPAg could be used as green and efficient biomedical wound dressing materials.

Abstract
A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract (GLE) has potential applications as a wound dressing with good antibacterial activity. This study succeeded in fabricating a PVA hydrogel containing GLE using the freeze–thaw (FT) method. By varying the GLE concentration, we can adjust the physical properties of the hydrogel. The addition of GLE results in a decrease in cross-linking during gelation and an increase in the pore size of the hydrogels. The increase of the pore size made the swelling increase and the mechanical strength decrease. The weight loss of the hydrogel also increases because the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) dissolves the GLE. Increasing the GLE concentration caused the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) absorbance peaks to widen due to hydrogen bonds formed during the FT process. The crystalline phase was transformed into an amorphous phase in the PVA/GLE hydrogel based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization showed a significant decrease in the hydrogel weight over temperatures of 30–150 °C due to the evaporation of water from the hydrogel matrix. The zone of inhibition of the PVA/GLE hydrogel increased with antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus of 17.93% per gram and 15.79% per gram against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with guava leaf extract (GLE) has potential applications as a wound dressing with good antibacterial activity.![]()

Abstract
Injectable hydrogels with multifunctional tunable properties comprising biocompatibility, anti-oxidative, anti-bacterial, and/or anti-infection are highly preferred to efficiently promote diabetic wound repair and its development remains a challenge. In this study, we report chondroitin sulphate (CS) and sodium alginate (SA)-based injectable hydrogel using solvent casting method loaded with curcumin that could potentiate reepithelization, increase angiogenesis, and collagen deposition at wound microenvironment to endorse healing cascade. The physical interaction and self-assembly of chondroitin sulfate grafted alginate (CS-Alg-g-PF127) hydrogel were confirmed using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and cytocompatibility was confirmed by fibroblast viability assay. The Masson's trichrome (MT) and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) results revealed that blank chondroitin sulfate grafted alginate (CS-Alg-g-PF127) and CUR loaded CS-Alg-g-PF127 hydrogel had promising tissue regenerative ability, and showing enhanced wound healing compared to other treatment groups. The controlled release of CUR from injectable hydrogel was evaluated by drug release studies and pharmacokinetic profile (PK) using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that exhibited the mean residence time (MRT) and area under the curve (AUC) was increased up to 16.18 h and 203.64 ± 30.1 μg/mL*h, respectively. Cytotoxicity analysis of the injectable hydrogels using 3 T3-L1 fibroblasts cells and in vivo toxicity evaluated by subcutaneous injection for 24 h followed by histological examination, confirmed good biocompatibility of CUR loaded CS-Alg-g-PF127 hydrogel. Interestingly, the results of in vivo wound healing by injectable hydrogel showed the upregulation of fibroblasts-like cells, collagen deposition, and differentiated keratinocytes stimulating dermo-epidermal junction, which might endorse that they are potential candidates for excisional wound healing models.

Abstract
Introduction: Water soluble polysaccharides are versatile structural materials that can be used for the design of biocompatible hydrogels and wet dressings in wound healing applications. Glycol chitosan (GC) is an example of a multifunctional water-soluble chitosan derivative that has inherent wound healing properties and reactive sites for chemical modification.Areas covered: United States (US) patent US2019202998A1 describes the preparation of a novel wound healing technology based on a three-dimensional (3D) crosslinked GC hydrogel (GCH) wet dressing, prepared via the synthesis of PEG1K-biscarboxylic acid-g-Glycol Chitosan-g-methacrylate using visible light induced photocrosslinking. The selected polymeric network enables the encapsulation of additional growth factors or bioactives on reactive sites. Wet dressings in US2019202998A1 were evaluated against a commercially available control for in vitro release, cytotoxicity, and in vivo wound healing ability in a preliminary mouse model, with the overall wound healing performance consistent with related GC-based hydrogels.Expert opinion: Comprehensive biocompatibility and antimicrobial testing of the hydrogel is not reported in US2019202998A1, and is recommended as further work to enable clinical applicability. The invention disclosed in US2019202998A1 can potentially be integrated with 3D bioprinting and sensor technology for the preparation of 'smart' hydrogel wound dressings, and is a potential area for future research.

Abstract
Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymeric networks capable of absorbing large amounts of water or biological fluids with the properties resembling natural living tissues. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/N-succinyl chitosan (NSCS)/lincomycin hydrogels for wound dressing were prepared by the freezing/thawing method, then characterized by FTIR, SEM, and TGA. The compression strength, swelling behavior, water retention capacity, antibacterial activity, drug release and cytotoxicity were systematically investigated. The results showed that the introduction of NSCS remarkably enhanced the swelling capacity, leading to the maximum swelling ratio of 19.68 g/g in deionized water. The optimal compression strength of 0.75 MPa was achieved with 30 % NSCS content.Additionally, the incorporation of lincomycin brought a remarkable antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Specifically, 77.71 % of Staphylococcus aureus was inhibited with 75 μg/mL lincomycin, while the MTT assay demonstrated the nontoxic nature of the composite hydrogels. In summary, this PVA/NSCS/lincomycin hydrogel showed promising potential for wound dressing.

Abstract
Age and diabetes related slow-healing or chronic wounds may result in morbidity and mortality through persistent biofilms infections and prolonged inflammatory phase. Nano-materials [metal/metal oxide NPs (39%), lipid vehicles (21%), polymer NPs (19%), ceramic nanoparticles (NPs) (14%), and carbon nanomaterials (NMs) (7%)] can be introduced as a possible next-generation therapy because of either their intrinsic wound healing activity or via carrying bioactive compounds including, antibiotics, antioxidants, growth factor or stem cell. The nanomaterials have been shown to implicate in all four stages of wound healing including hemostasis (polymer NPs, ceramic NPs, nanoceria-6.1%), inflammation (liposome/vesicles/solid lipid NPs/polymer NPs/ceramic NPs/silver NPs/gold NPs/nanoceria/fullerenes/carbon-based NPs-32.7%), proliferation (vesicles/liposome/solid lipid NPs/gold NPs/silver NPs/iron oxide NPs/ceramic NPs/copper NPs/self-assembling elastin-like NPs/nanoceria/micelle/dendrimers/polymer NPs-57.1%), remodeling (iron oxide NPs/nanoceria-4.1%). Natural compounds from alkaloids, flavonoids, retinoids, volatile oil, terpenes, carotenoids, or polyphenolic compounds with proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, or antimicrobial characteristics are also well known for their potential to accelerate the wound healing process. In the current paper, we survey the potential and properties of nanomaterials and microbial compounds in improving the process of wound and scar healing. Finally, we review the potential biocompounds for incorporation to nano-material in perspective to designate more effective or multivalent wound healing natural or nano-based drugs.

Abstract
Wound management remains a challenge worldwide, although there are several developed wound dressing materials for the management of acute and chronic wounds. The wound dressings that are currently used include hydrogels, films, wafers, nanofibers, foams, topical formulations, transdermal patches, sponges, and bandages. Hydrogels exhibit unique features which make them suitable wound dressings such as providing a moist environment for wound healing, exhibiting high moisture content, or creating a barrier against bacterial infections, and are suitable for the management of exuding and granulating wounds. Biopolymers have been utilized for their development due to their non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. Hydrogels have been prepared from biopolymers such as cellulose and chitosan by crosslinking with selected synthetic polymers resulting in improved mechanical, biological, and physicochemical properties. They were useful by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and also mimic skin structure, inducing skin regeneration. Loading antibacterial agents into them prevented bacterial invasion of wounds. This review article is focused on hydrogels formulated from two biopolymers-chitosan and cellulose-for improved wound management.

Abstract
Vitreous, an essential dioptric medium for the human eyes, must be filled with artificial materials once damaged. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCTS) is one of the most important water-soluble chitosan derivatives with improved biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA) was prepared as crosslinking reagent. CMCTS and OHA were used to develop a biocompatible, self-repairing and in-situ injectable hydrogel for vitreous substitutes. Results showed the hydrogel with controllable swelling properties, high transparency, acceptable cytocompatibility on mouse fibroblast L929 and histocompatibility in vivo. Furthermore, hydrogel was injected in-situ into the vitreous cavity after vitrectomy on New Zealand Rabbits, no significant and persistent adverse effects were observed during the 90-day follow-up period. In addition, the hydrogel maintained intraocular pressure of the operated eyes and the inherent position of the retina. Collectively, this injectable, biodegradable, nontoxic hydrogel possessed enormous potential to become a vitreous substitute material.

Abstract
ZnO-Nanoparticle-Chitosan (ZnO-NP-CH) composite has potential biomedical and food applications due to its better antimicrobial activity. However, the presence of nano-metal-oxide in the composite makes the material unsuitable for any food applications. Moreover, the cost involved in the preparation of Zinc Oxide-Nano-Particle (ZnO-NP) is a major limitation for commercial food applications. Hence a suitable alternative for ZnO-NP is highly needed for food application. Since ZnO-Bulk Particles (ZnO-BP) are food grade and there is no study on the composite prepared from ZnO-Bulk Particle-Chitosan (ZnO-BP-CH), in the present study, antimicrobial activity was assessed for ZnO-BP-CH and compared with ZnO-NP-CH. Based on the study, it was observed that in the individual form of ZnO-NP possessed significantly higher antimicrobial activity than ZnO-BP. The composite form of ZnO-NP-CH and ZnO-BP-CH possessed higher antimicrobial activity than chitosan. However, no significant difference was observed between the composite forms. Hence, ZnO-BP-CH could be recommended as a suitable alternative to ZnO-NP-CH for future studies related to chitosan with ZnO composite to avoid costly nanomaterials preparation.

Abstract
Nanotechnology-based fabricated wound dressings are known as appropriate substrates to enhance healing in both acute and chronic wounds. These types of materials have the ability to deliver therapeutic agents. In this study, a wound dressing including heparinized zinc oxide nanoparticles in combination with chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) was developed to investigate its antibacterial and regenerative properties in a rat model of full thickness skin wounds. By adding nanoparticles, the mechanical strength increased up to twice as compared to the sample without nanoparticles. In addition, heparin release profile follows the Hixson-Crowell release kinetic. Protein adsorption enhanced by adding nanoparticles in hydrogels and the prepared wound dressings were completely biocompatible. In terms of antibacterial activity, the minimum inhibitory concentration decreased by conjugation of heparin on the surface of zinc oxide nanoparticles compared to the non-functionalized nanoparticles, and, this shows the increased antibacterial synergistic effect by adding heparin to nanoparticles. Furthermore, it was found that the heparinized zinc oxide nanoparticles effectively accelerate wound closure, re-epithelialization and decrease collagen deposition compared to other groups after implantation. Hence, the prepared wound dressings have the capacity to significantly enhance healing of acute wounds.

Abstract
Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are chronic severe complications of diabetes disease and remain a worldwide clinical challenge with social and economic consequences. Diabetic wounds can cause infection, amputation of lower extremities, and even death. Several factors including impaired angiogenesis, vascular insufficiency, and bacterial infections result in a delayed process of wound healing in diabetic patients. Treatment of wound infections using traditional antibiotics has become a critical status. Thus, finding new therapeutic strategies to manage diabetic wounds is urgently needed. Nanotechnology has emerged as an efficient approach for this purpose. This review aimed to summarize recent advances using nanotechnology for the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide widely used in biomedicine, for instance for wound dressing. Hydroxyapatite is a very bioactive calcium phosphate which, if modified with an appropriate element (iron Fe), can also have UV-absorbing properties. In this work, we report the study of films of chitosan incorporated with iron-modified hydroxyapatite of natural origin (from cod fish bones); this combination led to an innovative chitosan-based material with excellent and advanced functional properties. The films showed very high UV absorption (Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) value higher than 50). This is the first time that a chitosan-based material has shown such high UV protection properties. The films also showed to be non-cytotoxic, and possessed antimicrobial activity towards both Gram-positive and negative strains. Their mechanical properties, optimised with an experimental design approach, confirmed their potential use as multifunctional wound dressing, capable of reducing bacterial infections and, at the same time, protecting from UV light.

Abstract
Globally, the fourth most prevalent devastating form of trauma are burn injuries. Ideal burn wound dressings are fundamental to facilitate the wound healing process and decrease pain in lower time intervals. Conventional dry dressing treatments, such as those using absorbent gauze and/or absorbent cotton, possess limited therapeutic effects and require repeated dressing changes, which further aggravate patients' suffering. Contrariwise, hydrogels represent a promising alternative to improve healing by assuring a moisture balance at the burn site. Most studies consider hydrogels as ideal candidate materials for the synthesis of wound dressings because they exhibit a three-dimensional (3D) structure, which mimics the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) of skin in regard to the high-water amount, which assures a moist environment to the wound. There is a wide variety of polymers that have been used, either alone or blended, for the fabrication of hydrogels designed for biomedical applications focusing on treating burn injuries. The aim of this paper is to provide an up-to-date overview of hydrogels applied in burn wound dressings.

Abstract
Injectable hydrogels with high anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties are highly desirable for clinical application. In the present study, injectable hydrogels were prepared based on carboxymethyl chitosan and oxidized hyaluronic acid. Blueberry anthocyanins (BA), which are known for their antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, were successfully loaded into the hydrogels. The gelation kinetics and mechanical properties of the hydrogels were investigated. Oxidized hyaluronic acid with an oxidation degree of 38.1% conferred a suitable gelation time (~70 s) and mechanical properties (76.0 kPa compression stress at strain of 80%) of the hydrogel. The injectable BA-loaded hydrogel significantly accelerated the wound healing process in a full-thickness skin wound model in rats, promoted epithelial and tissue regeneration, exerted antiinflammatory effects, and promoted collagen deposition and angiogenesis. Besides, the hydrogel could upregulate the expression of VEGF and IL-10 proteins, downregulate the NF-κB level, and promote macrophage transformation from M1 phenotype to M2. The promotion of the BA-loaded hydrogel on wound healing were mainly realized by its biological effects, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and regulation of various wound healing related factors. The results suggested that BA and the hydrogels exert synergistic effects in promoting wound healing. Injectable BA-loaded hydrogels appear to be promising candidates for wound healing application.

Abstract
The present study investigated effects of low-level laser therapy with cellulose nanocrystals/cellulose nanofibrils loaded in nanoemulsion (NE) against skin cancer cells on apoptosis. The nanoemulsion was fabricated and characterized by the standard methods. The toxicity level by cytotoxicity assays, generation of reactive singlet oxygen (ROS) and antioxidant potential, cell proliferation and migration were confirmed by using standard assays. The cellular uptake efficacy was evaluated by differential staining. The protein levels of EGFR, PI3K, AKT, ERK, GAPDH, and β-actin were detected by western blot. The samples showed a spherical shaped structure with the average size confirmed strong and stable hydrogen bonding forces with high degradation temperature and endothermic transition peaks. The fabricated samples showed no toxicity and high cell proliferation by generating more singlet oxygen levels and antioxidants. The intracellular signaling pathways was regulated with high protein expression levels, which was stimulated by specific molecules for cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation in cancer cells. The results proved that combined treatment regulated the intracellular signaling pathways in cancer cells. The current study showed a novel strategy for improving therapeutic efficacy of nanoemulsion by using low-level laser therapy. Further, the current favorable outcomes will be evaluated in in vivo animal models.

Abstract
Chitin and its derivative chitosan are popular constituents in wound-treatment technologies due to their nanoscale fibrous morphology and attractive biomedical properties that accelerate healing and reduce scarring. These abundant natural polymers found in arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls affect almost every phase of the healing process, acting as hemostatic and antibacterial agents that also support cell proliferation and attachment. However, key differences exist in the structure, properties, processing, and associated polymers of fungal and arthropod chitin, affecting their respective application to wound treatment. High purity crustacean-derived chitin and chitosan have been widely investigated for wound-treatment applications, with research incorporating chemically modified chitosan derivatives and advanced nanocomposite dressings utilizing biocompatible additives, such as natural polysaccharides, mineral clays, and metal nanoparticles used to achieve excellent mechanical and biomedical properties. Conversely, fungi-derived chitin is covalently decorated with -glucan and has received less research interest despite its mass production potential, simple extraction process, variations in chitin and associated polymer content, and the established healing properties of fungal exopolysaccharides. This review investigates the proven biomedical properties of both fungal- and crustacean-derived chitin and chitosan, their healing mechanisms, and their potential to advance modern wound-treatment methods through further research and practical application.

Abstract
Wound healing is a series of different dynamic and complex phenomena. Many studies have been carried out based on the type and severity of wounds. However, to recover wounds faster there are no suitable drugs available, which are highly stable, less expensive as well as has no side effects. Nanomaterials have been proven to be the most promising agent for faster wound healing among all the other wound healing materials. This review briefly discusses the recent developments of wound healing by nanotechnology, their applicability and advantages. Nanomaterials have unique physicochemical, optical, and biological properties. Some of them can be directly applied for wound healing or some of them can be incorporated into scaffolds to create hydrogel matrix or nanocomposites, which promote wound healing through their antimicrobial, as well as selective anti- and pro-inflammatory, and proangiogenic properties. Owing to their high surface area to volume ratio, nanomaterials have not only been used for drug delivery vectors but also can affect wound healing by influencing collagen deposition and realignment and provide approaches for skin tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) provide a promising means of creating custom-tailored cell lines for cellular therapies. Their application in regenerative medicine, however, depends on the possibility that the maintenance and differentiation of cells and organs occur under defined conditions. One major component of stem cell culture systems is the substrate, where the cells must attach and proliferate. The present study aimed to investigate the putative cytotoxic effects of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based matrices on the in vitro culture of mouse fetal fibroblasts. In addition, the PVA-based hydrogels were used to determine the capacity of bovine induced pluripotent stem cells (biPSCs) to adhere and proliferate on synthetic substrates. Our results show that both cell types interacted with the substrate and presented proliferation during culture. The biPSCs formed new colonies when cell suspensions were placed onto the hydrogel surface for culture. These results may represent a new characterized xeno-free clinical grade culture system to be widely applied in cell-based therapies.

Abstract
Treatment of burn injury is clinically challenging one, therefore several steps and noteworthy approaches have been taken to improve wound mechanisms. Citrus pectin plays a stabilizing agent to synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The present study is focused on ZnO loaded collagen/chitosan nanofibrous were synthesized by electrospinning method using ZnO NPs. The chemical structure, phase purity and morphological observation were investigated under spectroscopic and mircoscopic techniques and demonstrated their suitable properties as a wound healing material. In addition, that prepared nanoparticles loaded biopolymeric fibrous nanomaterial showed suitable antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacterial pathogens and also in vitro studies was confirmed the enhanced proliferation, cell viability and biocompatibility. In vitro evaluations have been exhibited acceptable cell proliferation is observed throughout the ZnO loaded Coll/CS nanofibrous within 3 days, which was comparable to the control material. In vivo wound healing ability was monitored on the rat wound experimental model. From the in vivo observations, revealed that the loaded of ZnO NPs with Coll/CS nanofibrous can effectively quicken wound healing mechanism, expressed in the initial stage healing process. These results suggest that ZnO loaded collagen/chitosan nanofibrous is a potential candidate for wound healing applications with enhanced biological properties.
