Enhancement of Cr(VI) removal efficiency via adsorption/photocatalysis synergy using electrospun chitosan/g-C3N4/TiO2 nanofibers

Production of polyacrylonitrile/ionic covalent organic framework hybrid nanofibers for effective removal of chromium(VI) from water

Hexavalent Cr(VI) found in industrial wastewater is a proven carcinogen which causes serious health issues in humans around the world. This study presents a novel method to enhance the Cr(VI) oxyanion removal from wastewater by polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers through incorporation of a guanidinium-based ionic covalent organic framework (BT-DG) in the nanofibers structure. Simple electrospinning technique was employed to produce PAN nanofibers and BT-DG was synthesized through condensation between benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde and N,N'-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride. In-situ polymerization of BT-DG onto PAN nanofibers resulted in generation of hybrid PAN-BT-DG nanofibers. This modified PAN-BT-DG was characterized by obtaining its point of zero charge (PZC), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology and surface elements and oxidation states by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PAN-BT-DG exhibited positive surface charge below pH 4, making it an outstanding adsorbent, for Cr(VI) removal. Cr(VI) adsorption onto PAN-BT-DG followed pseudo second order kinetics and adsorption data fitted well to Freundlich isotherm model. Highest Cr(VI) removal was obtained at 55 ℃ with a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of 173 mg/g at pH 3. Kinetic studies revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption onto PAN-BT-DG is endothermic and thermodynamically feasible. Desorption studies were conducted on PAN-BT-DG using 1 M NaOH as the stripping solvent and PAN-BT-DG exhibited excellent regeneration after five consecutive cycles.

A comprehensive review on electrospun nanohybrid membranes for wastewater treatment

Electrospinning, being a versatile and straightforward method to produce nanofiber membranes, has shown significant advancement in recent years. On account of the unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, mechanical strength, and controllable surface morphologies, electrospun nanofiber membranes have been found to have a great potential in many disciplines. Pure electrospun fiber mats modified with different techniques of surface modification and additive incorporation have exhibited enhanced properties compared to traditional membranes and are even better than the as-prepared electrospun membranes. In this review, we have summarized recently developed electrospun nanohybrids fabricated by the incorporation of functional specific nanosized additives to be used in various water remediation membrane techniques. The adsorption, filtration, photocatalytic, and bactericidal capabilities of the hybrid membranes in removing common major water pollutants such as metal ions, dyes, oils, and biological pollutants have been discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future research pathways to fill the gaps existing in water remediation have been suggested.

Cr(VI)-imprinted polymer wrapped on urchin-like Bi2S3 for reduced photocorrosion and improved photoreduction of aqueous Cr(VI)

Just like other metal sulfides, the misfortune of photocorrosion and undesired photogenerated electron-hole recombination for Bi₂S₃ was inevitable. In this work, a viable route to reduce photocorrosion of Bi₂S₃ and improve photoreduction of aqueous Cr(VI) was developed via "dressed" a Cr(VI) imprinting polymer (Cr(VI)-IP) on urchin-like Bi₂S₃ (U-Bi₂S₃). Cr(VI)-IP wrapped on the three dimensional U-Bi₂S₃ was implemented by a bulk polymerization. The wrapped Cr(VI)-IP enabled to fast enrich and adsorb Cr(VI) on U-Bi₂S₃ leading to improve the photoreduced efficiency of photogenerated carriers and restrain the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. What's more, Cr(VI)-IP wrapped on U-Bi₂S₃ was just like an "armor" which could support the three dimensional construction of U-Bi₂S₃ from the structural collapse of photocorrosion and retard the direct contact of oxygen and H₂O from the surrounding media. As expected, the obtained U-Bi₂S₃@Cr(VI)-IP exhibited higher photostability, adsorption, photoreduction capacities towards the target Cr(VI) than the bare U-Bi₂S₃. The photocatalytic kinetic constant of U-Bi₂S₃@Cr(VI)-IP was 6 times higher than U-Bi₂S₃. After 3 times recycling uses, the morphology, crystal structure and chemical constitution of U-Bi₂S₃@Cr(VI)-IP were maintained. In addition, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by U-Bi₂S₃@Cr(VI)-IP was kept at 58% whereas U-Bi₂S₃ was almost lost to zero.

A comprehensive review on preparation, functionalization and recent applications of nanofiber membranes in wastewater treatment

The direct discharge of significant amounts of polluted water into water bodies causes adverse ecological and human health effects. This severe deterioration in water quality creates significant challenges to meet the growing demand for clean water. Therefore, the world urgently needs environmentally friendly advanced technology to overcome this global crisis. In this regard, nanofiber-based membrane filtration is a promising technique in wastewater remediation because of their huge surface area, extremely porous structure, amenable pore size/pore size distribution, variety of material choices, and flexibility to modification with other functional materials. However, despite their unique properties, fouling, poor mechanical properties, shrinkage, and deformation are major drawbacks of nanofiber membranes for treating wastewater. This review presents a comprehensive overview of nanofiber membranes' fabrication and function in water purification applications as well as providing novel approaches to overcoming/alleviating the mentioned disadvantages. The review first presents nanofiber membrane preparation methods, focusing on electrospinning as a versatile and viable technique alongside discussing the parameters controlling nanofiber morphology. Afterward, the functionalization of nanofiber membranes by combining them with other nanomaterials, such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, and biomolecules, were demonstrated and discussed. In addition, nanofiber membranes functionalized with microorganisms were highlighted. Finally, we introduced and discussed in detail the most relevant and recent advances in nanofiber applications in wastewater treatment in the context of removing different pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients, radioactive elements, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, dyes, and pesticides). Moreover, the promising antimicrobial ability of nanofiber membranes in removing microorganisms from wastewater has been fully underscored. We believe this comprehensive review could provide researchers with preliminary data and guide both researchers and producers engaged in the nanofiber membrane industry, letting them focus on the research gaps in wastewater treatment.

Insight into the synergistic adsorption-reduction character of chromium(VI) onto poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylene pentamine) microsphere in synthetic wastewater

Facile fabrication of the ultra-high-performance adsorbent can effectively ameliorate the Cr(VI)-pollution elimination in sewage control. Herein, a simple synthesis strategy is proposed to tap a versatile chelating resin poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylene pentamine) (PPTA) with respect to Cr(VI) removal from solution. Multiple changing factors which affect the adsorption behavior of PPTA are explored sequentially, such as initial pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, foreign ions, etc. The microstructure and functional mechanism of synthetic adsorbent are investigated systematically by means of various characterizations including TEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS, etc. Consequently, the as-prepared PPTA-3 microsphere by reactant ratio of 1: 1 represents a brilliant synergistic adsorption and reduction result for Cr(VI) by the drastic electrostatic interaction of -NH₃⁺ and -OH₂⁺ groups, including satisfactory removal efficiency which closes to 100 % in low concentration, favorable specificity for the influence from coexistent ions (Mo(VI), Mn(VII), Cl^-, Cr(III), etc), and passable recyclability. Following the surpassingly fitting with Langmuir isotherm model, its maximum capacity reaches 714.29 mg g^-1 at 30 °C. The removal performance is essentially in agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetics, simultaneously, suffers the rate-limiting impact depending on intra-particle diffusion process. In brief, this newly developed chelating resin presents an effective means with regard to the Cr(VI)-wastewater treatment or other uses in the future.

Natural pyrite improved steel slag towards environmentally sustainable chromium reclamation from hexavalent chromium-containing wastewater

Currently, varied processes adopted to remove hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution have been realized to cause secondary pollution. As such, this study explored a green method for aqueous hexavalent chromium (Cr(Ⅵ)) reclamation by waste steel slag (SS) enhanced by natural pyrite (NP). Compared with the sole SS or NP, more efficient Cr(Ⅵ) removal was achieved by NP-SS at an initial pH value ranging from 1 to 8, resulting in a final pH value of 7-8. Cr(Ⅵ) in the solution could be initially reduced to Cr(III) by Fe²⁺ provided by NP, which was then bound with the OH^- in the solution and the supersaturated calcium silicate hydrate on the surface of SS. In addition, the stearic acid anions existing on the surface of SS could promote the adsorption of Cr(III) to form chromium stearate. The used adsorbent could be potentially used for chromium smelting. Overall, this study provides a feasible and environmental sustainable solution to chromium reclamation from hexavalent chromium-containing wastewater.

Visible-light-driven Z-scheme Zn3In2S6/AgBr photocatalyst for boosting simultaneous Cr (VI) reduction and metronidazole oxidation: Kinetics, degradation pathways and mechanism

It is urgently needed to develop high-performance materials that can synchronously remove heavy metals and organic pollutants. Herein, the visible-light responsive Zn₃In₂S₆/AgBr composites were prepared for concurrent removals of metronidazole (MNZ) and Cr (VI). In the Cr (VI)-MNZ coexisting system, the removals of MNZ and Cr (VI) using the optimized Zn₃In₂S₆/AgBr-15 photocatalyst reached 98.2% and 94.8% within 2 h, respectively; higher than those using counterparts. The radical species trapping and electron spin resonance (ESR) results demonstrated that ·OH was the most dominated species for MNZ oxidation, and photo-generated electrons were responsible for Cr (VI) reduction. Besides, slight competition for ·O₂- during the simultaneous MNZ degradation and Cr (VI) reduction occurred. Energy band structure analysis, ESR and the outstanding photocatalytic performance for MNZ and Cr (VI) removals demonstrated that the Zn₃In₂S₆/AgBr-15 was a Z-scheme photocatalyst, which promoted photo-induced carrier's separation. Possible MNZ degradation pathways and mechanism over the Z-scheme Zn₃In₂S₆/AgBr were also proposed based on the identified intermediates. This study could inspire new ideas for design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Recent developments in polysaccharide-based electrospun nanofibers for environmental applications

Electrospinning has become an inevitable approach to produce nanofibrous structures for diverse environmental applications. Polysaccharides, due to their variety of types, biobased origins, and eco-friendly, and renewable nature are wonderful materials for the said purpose. The present review discusses the electrospinning process, the parameters involved in the formation of electrospun nanofibers in general, and the polysaccharides in specific. The selection of materials to be electrospun depends on the processing conditions and properties deemed desirable for specific applications. Thereby, the conditions to electrospun polysaccharides-based nanofibers have been focused on for possible environmental applications including air filtration, water treatment, antimicrobial treatment, environmental sensing, and so forth. The polysaccharide-based electrospun membranes, for instance, due to their active adsorption sites could find significant potential for contaminants removal from the aqueous systems. The study also gives some recommendations to overcome any shortcomings faced during the electrospinning and environmental applications of polysaccharide-based matrices.

Research progress of adsorption and removal of heavy metals by chitosan and its derivatives: A review

Chitosan has received widespread attention as an adsorbent for pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potentials. Chitosan has abundant hydroxyl and amino groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, it has defects such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability, and low mechanical strength, which limit the application of chitosan in wastewater treatment. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to improve its performance via crosslinking and graft modification. The porosity and specific surface area of chitosan in powder form are not ideal, therefore, physical modification has been attempted to generate chitosan nanoparticles and hydrogel. Chitosan has also been integrated with other materials (e.g. graphene, zeolite) resulting in composite materials with improved adsorption performance. This review mainly focuses on reports about the application of chitosan and its derivatives to remove different heavy metals. The preparation strategy, adsorption mechanism, and factors affecting the adsorption performance of adsorbents for each type of heavy metal are discussed in detail. Recent reports on important organic pollutants (dyes and phenol) removal by chitosan and its derivatives are also briefly discussed.

Synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of different antibiotics in seawater by a porous g-C3N4/calcined-LDH and its application in synthetic mariculture wastewater

In this work, a modified g-C₃N₄/MgZnAl-calcined layered double hydroxide composite (M-CN/cLDH) was successfully fabricated via a template method. The composite material is a hierarchical porous flower-like nanostructure self-assembled from stacked hybrid flakes. The 3D M-CN/cLDH architectures exhibit a synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis for eliminating typical tetracycline antibiotics in seawater, i.e., oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and doxycycline (DXC). The synergistic removal rate of OTC in seawater of M-CN/cLDH is 2.73 times higher than that of g-C₃N₄ after 120 min of visible-light illumination, and M-CN/cLDH also performs better adsorption-photocatalytic degradation on OTC in the continuous flow reaction process. The superior adsorption capability of the M-CN/cLDH is attributed to the open porous structures of cLDH, and its excellent photocatalytic degradation activity is ascribed to the closely bonded heterojunctions between g-C₃N₄ (CN) and cLDH double layers. The mass spectra reveals the degradation pathways of OTC, and its byproducts are less toxic after degradation for 120 min. The exploration of the M-CN/cLDH in synthetic mariculture wastewater suggested a huge potential for its practical application. With the assistance of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation pretreatment, the material can effectively retain the high OTC removal rate in the synthetic mariculture wastewater circumstance.

Polysaccharide-based (nano)materials for Cr(VI) removal

Chromium is a potentially poisonous and carcinogenic species, which originates from human activities and various industries such as leather, steel, iron, and electroplating industries. Chromium is present in various oxidation states, among which hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is highly toxic as a natural contaminant. Therefore, chromium, particularly Cr(VI), must be eliminated from the environment, soil, and water to overcome significant problems due to its accumulation in the environment. There are different approaches such as adsorption, ion exchange, photocatalytic reduction, etc. for removing Cr(VI) from the environment. By converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III), its toxicity is reduced. Cr(III) is essential for the human diet, even in small amounts. Today, biopolymers such as alginate, cellulose, gum, pectin, starch, chitin, and chitosan have received much attention for the removal of environmental pollutants. Biopolymers, particularly polysaccharides, are very useful compounds due to their OH and NH₂ functional groups and some advantages such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and accessibility. Therefore, they can be widely applied in catalytic applications and as efficient adsorbents for the removal of toxic compounds from the environment. This review briefly investigates the application of polysaccharide-based (nano)materials for efficient Cr(VI) removal from the environment using adsorption/reduction, photocatalytic, and chemical reduction mechanisms.

A reusable chitosan/TiO2@g-C3N4 nanocomposite membrane for photocatalytic removal of multiple toxic water pollutants under visible light

Photocatalysis has been proved to be a promising approach in wastewater purification. However, it is hard to recycle powdery photocatalysts from wastewater in industry, but immobilizing them using larger materials can overcome this drawback. For that reason, TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ was embedded into chitosan to synthesize a highly reusable and visible-light-driven chitosan/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite membrane (CTGM). CTGM showed enhanced photoactivity and the photocatalytic efficiencies of the toxic water pollutants methyl orange (M.O.), rhodamine B (Rh.B), chromium (VI) (Cr (VI)), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and atrazine (ATZ) were more than 90% under visible light at ambient conditions. Significantly, CTGM was easy to recycle and showed excellent reusability: there was no decrease in the photocatalytic decolorization efficiency of Rh.B throughout 10 cycles. A continuous-flow photocatalysis system was set up and 90% of Rh.B was effectively decolorized. A simple approach was developed to prepare a novel, effective and visible-light-driven membrane that was easy to reuse, and a feasible photocatalysis continuous-flow system was designed to be a reference for wastewater treatment in industry.

Van der Waals enhanced interfacial interaction in cellulose/zinc oxide nanocomposite coupled by graphitic carbon nitride

In-depth understanding of interfacial property is the key to guiding the synthesis of biomass composites with desired performance. However, the exploration is of great challenge due to limitations of experimental techniques in locating hydrogen, requiring large/good crystals and detecting a weak interaction like van der Waals (vdW). Herein, we experimentally and computationally investigated the composite cellulose/zinc oxide/g-C₃N₄. Hydrothermal synthesis afforded cellulose/ZnO, and then fabricated the ternary composite by adding g-C₃N₄ under ultrasonic condition. Three components are found to co-exist in the composite, and the ZnO nanoparticle is attaching to cellulose and coupling with g-C₃N₄. These experimental findings were corroborated by relativistic DFT calculations. The interfacial coupling is elaborated as contributions of dative bonds, hydrogen bonds and vdW interaction. The vdW is increased by a factor of 4.23 in the ZnO/g-C₃N₄ interface. This improves electron-hole separation and offers prospective application of the composite in photocatalysis, antibacteria and gas sensing.

Integrated photocatalysis-adsorption-membrane separation in rotating reactor for synergistic removal of RhB

A synergistic system of integrated photocatalysis-adsorption-membrane separation in a rotating reactor was designed. The composite membrane was prepared via filtration process under vacuum, and it was composed of graphene oxide (GO) acted as the separation membrane, activated carbon (AC) as the adsorbent and Ag@BiOBr as the photocatalyst, respectively. In this Ag@BiOBr/AC/GO membrane system, rotation of the membrane could avoid the light-shielding effect from organic color pollutants to achieve the complete removal of pollutants. More importantly, the synergistic effect among photocatalysis, adsorption and membrane separation in rotating reactor was significant for the efficient removal of rhodamine B (RhB). In the Ag@BiOBr/AC/GO composite membrane, GO membrane layer could reject the organic molecular by the assistance of AC layer with efficient adsorption capacity, and Ag@BiOBr at outer layer could photodegrade the organics under visible light irradiation. The photocatalysis process could solve the problem of membrane fouling and adsorption could assist GO membrane for stopping the permeation of pollutants. Meanwhile, GO membrane was not only beneficial for catalyst recovery, but also could concentrate the pollutants via the membrane separation to accelerate the photocatalytic degradation. At the same time, both the photocatalysis degradation and membrane separation could promote the adsorption ability of AC. This synergistic system showed the significant potential for the practical application in the future.

Porous and hydrophobic graphene-based core-shell sponges for efficient removal of water contaminants

Water pollution is a global environmental problem that has attracted great concern, and functional carbon nanomaterials are widely used in water treatment. Here, to optimize the removal performance of both oil/organic matter and dye molecules, we fabricated porous and hydrophobic core-shell sponges by growing graphene on three-dimensional stacked copper nanowires. The interconnected pores between the one-dimensional nanocore-shells construct the porous channels within the sponge, and the multilayered graphene shells equip the sponge with a water contact angle over 120° even under acidic and alkaline environments, which enables fast and efficient cleanup of oil on or under the water. The core-shell sponge can absorb oil or organic solvents with densities 40-90 times its own, and its oil-sorption capacity is much larger than those of other porous materials like activated carbon and loofah. On the other hand, the adsorption behavior of the core-shell sponge to dyes including methyl orange (MO) and malachite green (MG), also common water pollutants, was also measured. Dynamic adsorption of MG under cyclic compression demonstrated a higher adsorption rate than that in the static state, and an acidic environment was favorable for the adsorption of MO molecules. Finally, the adsorption isotherm for MO molecules was analyzed and fitted with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics were studied in depth as well.

Preparation of a porous carbon material by hydrothermal activation of itaconic acid fermentation waste liquid and its efficient adsorption of Cr(vi)
