Fe(II)-phthalocyanine supported on chitosan aerogel as a catalyst for oxidation of alcohols and alkyl arenes

Manipulation of materials is considered as one of the eminent strategies to create desirable catalysts. In this regard, increasing surface area and decreasing dimensions of catalysts have been widely employed on account of effectiveness of these methods. Herein, aerogel form of chitosan as a sustainable, and high aspect ratio compound is employed as a green support for the catalytic purposes. Chitosan aerogel was modified with Fe(II)-phthalocyanine to produce a heterogeneous catalyst for oxidation reactions. The synthesized catalyst promoted the oxidation reactions of alcohols and alkyl arenes to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones using H2O2 as an oxidant in 24 h. The reactions for aliphatic and aromatic alcohols gave turnover numbers of 106-109 at 80 °C and 106-117 at room temperature, respectively. The oxidations of alkyl arenes were carried out with turnover numbers laying in the range of 106-117 at 100 °C. The low toxicity, inexpensive nature, and recycling possibility of the catalyst accompanied by the reaction mild conditions, clean oxidant, and excellent yields offer chitosan aerogel modified with Fe(II)-phthalocyanine as a promising catalyst for oxidation reactions.

Heterometallic Al6Zn12 nano-plate with π-conjugated ligand: synthesis and nonlinear absorption properties

Presented herein is the synthesis, structure, and optical properties of the aluminum(III)-zinc(II) heterometallic compound AlOC-57. This compound was found to form a large unit cell (approximately sixteen thousand atoms) and a three-shell nano-plate structure. Based on the Z-scan patterns, the third-order nonlinear optical response of the heterometallic nano-plate was mainly attributed to its nonlinear absorption (reverse saturable absorption).

Recent advances in electrocatalysis with phthalocyanines

Applications of phthalocyanines (Pcs) in electrocatalysis-including the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)-have attracted considerable attention recently. Pcs and their derivatives are more attractive than many other macrocycles as electrocatalysts since, although they are structurally related to natural porphyrin complexes, they offer the advantages of low cost, facile synthesis and good chemical stability. Moreover, their high tailorability and structural diversity mean Pcs have great potential for application in electrochemical devices. Here we review the structure and composition of Pcs, methods of synthesis of Pcs and their analogues, as well as applications of Pc-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts. Optimization strategies for Pc-based materials for electrocatalysis of ORR, CO₂RR, OER and HER are proposed, based on the mechanisms of the different electrochemical reactions. We also discuss the structure/composition-catalytic activity relationships for different Pc materials and Pc-based electrocatalysts in order to identify future practical applications. Finally, future opportunities and challenges in the use of molecular Pcs and Pc derivatives as electrocatalysts are discussed.

A sextuple-decker heteroleptic phthalocyanine heterometallic samarium-cadmium complex with crystal structure and nonlinear optical properties in solution and gel glass

A sextuple-decker heteroleptic phthalocyanine heterometallic compound (1) with a subunit arrangement of {(Pc)Sm(Pc)Cd(Pc*)Cd(Pc*)Cd(Pc)Sm(Pc)} has been prepared and analyzed using various spectroscopic instruments, in which four unsubstituted phthalocyanine anions (Pc) and two substituted analogues (Pc*) with n-pentoxyl substituents at eight peripheral positions are connected through the complexation of two Sm(III) and three Cd(II) ions. In particular, its sextuple-decker structure has been disclosed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The solution and gel glass forms of this compound display third-order nonlinear optical properties due to the intrinsic conjugated nature over the sextuple-decker sandwich complex.

Optical, Electrochemical, Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Investigations of 3,4,5-Trimethoxy Phenyl Substituted Non-Aqueous Phthalocyanines

A new series of non-aqueous phthalocyanines having 3,4,5-trimethoxy phenyl group at peripheral positions in which the central cavity possessing Cu(II), Zn(II), and without metals has been synthesized, and its absorption, fluorescence (steady-state and excited state lifetimes), electrochemical, and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were evaluated. Absorption studies data suggest that all three phthalocyanines obey Beer-Lambert's law, and the redox properties indicate that both oxidation and reduction reactions are macrocyclic centered. The singlet quantum yields were measured in different solvents and were found to be in the range of 0.2-0.5 in the case of free-base, whereas it was in the range of 0.1-0.5 in zinc derivative, while the time-resolved fluorescence data revealed lifetimes of typically a few ns. The third-order NLO properties were investigated using the Z-scan technique with kilohertz (for retrieving true electronic nonlinearities) and megahertz repetition rate femtosecond pulses at 800 nm. Intensity-dependent Z-scan studies revealed robust NLO coefficients for solutions and thin films (two-photon absorption cross-sections of 9,300-57,000 GM) of these molecules suggesting a strong potential for optical switching, imaging, and optical limiting applications.

Switchable Aromaticity of Phthalocyanine via Reversible Nucleophilic Aromatic Addition to an Electron-Deficient Phosphorus(V) Complex

Reversible nucleophilic addition to a phthalocyanine core was observed for the first time for the electron-deficient cationic phosphorus(V) complex [PcP(OMe)₂]⁺, whose reaction with KOH afforded a highly distorted nonaromatic adduct bearing an OH group at one of the α-pyrrolic carbon atoms. This adduct was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI HRMS, and NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, together with quantum-chemical modeling. The acidic treatment of this adduct restored aromaticity and recovered the starting cationic complex. The reversible aromaticity breakage resulted in dramatic changes in the photophysical properties of the studied complex, which could pave the way to novel switchable Pc-based compounds and materials.

Zinc-[7]helicenocyanine and Its Discrete π-Stacked Homochiral Dimer

In this communication, we demonstrate a novel approach to prepare a discrete dimer of chiral phthalocyanine (Pc) by exploiting the flexible molecular geometry of helicenes, which enables structural interlocking and strong aggregation tendency of Pcs. Synthesized [7]helicene‐Pc hybrid molecular structure, zinc‐[7]helicenocyanine (Zn‐7HPc), exclusively forms a stable dimeric pair consisting of two homochiral molecules. The dimerization constants were estimated to be as high as 8.96×10⁶ M⁻¹ and 3.42×10⁷ M⁻¹ in THF and DMSO, respectively, indicating remarkable stability of dimer. In addition, Zn‐7HPc exhibited chiral self‐sorting behavior, which resulted in preferential formation of a homochiral dimer also in the racemic sample. Two phthalocyanine subunits in the dimeric form strongly communicate with each other as revealed by a large comproportionation constant and observation of an IV‐CT band for the thermodynamically stable mixed‐valence state.

A Janus-Type Phthalocyanine for the Assembly of Photoactive DNA Origami Coatings

Design and synthesis of novel photosensitizer architectures is a key step toward new multifunctional molecular materials. Photoactive Janus-type molecules provide interesting building blocks for such systems by presenting two well-defined chemical functionalities that can be utilized orthogonally. Herein a multifunctional phthalocyanine is reported, bearing a bulky and positively charged moiety that hinders their aggregation while providing the ability to adhere on DNA origami nanostructures via reversible electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, triethylene glycol moieties render a water-soluble and chemically inert corona that can stabilize the structures. This approach provides insight into the molecular design and synthesis of Janus-type sensitizers that can be combined with biomolecules, rendering optically active biohybrids.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic Properties and Redox Behavior Kinetics of Rare-Earth Bistetrakis-4-[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenoxy]phthalocyaninato Metal Complexes with Er, Lu and Yb

Novel bistetrakis-4-[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)phenoxy]phthalocyaninato of complexes erbium, lutetium and ytterbium were synthesized using a template fusion method to prevent any polymerization process. The complexes were separated from the reaction mixtures and characterized by NMR, IR and electron absorption spectroscopy. The spectroscopic properties of the metal phthalocyaninates in chloroform, acetone and tetrahydrofuran were studied. The regular bathochromic shift in the Er-Yb-Lu series was determined. In acetone medium all the complexes obtained were found to exist in an equilibrium state between neutral and reduced forms. The linearity of Lambert-Bouger-Beer curves makes it possible to study the kinetics of redox processes in the presence of phenylhydrazine and bromine. The lutetium complex showed better reducing properties and turned fully into the reduced form, while the erbium and ytterbium ones changed only partially. Upon oxidizing all the phthalocyaninates transformed into a mixture of oxidized and neutral-radical forms. The extinction coefficients and effective redox constants were calculated.

Porphyrin-based supramolecular assemblies and their applications in NLO and PDT

Tetrapyrrolic systems largely inspired by nature have attracted much attention in organic electronics and biomedical applications owing to their planar structure and extended [Formula: see text]-conjugated double bonds. As a result, delocalization of [Formula: see text]-electron cloud leads the excellent optical absorption and fluorescent properties. Nonetheless, the utilization of non-covalent interactions result in the self-assembled nanostructures providing applications in bioimaging and electronics. In this review, it is demonstrated that the recent reports on the self-assembly in tetrapyrrolic systems via supramolecular interactions lead to well-defined nanoarchitectures. Moreover, the importance of porphyrin based derivatives in nanoelectronics and chemotherapeutic applications is reported. Therefore, the inclination of tetrapyrroles towards the design and development of novel supramolecular nanostructures are considered the hallmark for nanorobotics, shape memory polymers and bionic arms.

Oxidation of diclofenac in the presence of iron(II) octacarboxyphthalocyanine

This paper presents the results of the research on the influence of catalytic activity of iron(II) octacarboxyphthalocyanines (FePcOC) on the transformation of diclofenac (DCF) which is the most popular anti-inflammatory analgesic. Diclofenac poses a serious threat to the natural environment. The paper demonstrates that diclofenac, in the presence a monomeric form of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine and hydroxyl radicals (HO^•) (from H₂O₂), undergoes a transformation into diclofenac-2,5-iminoquinone (DCF-2,5-IQ), causing distinct changes in the UV-Vis absorption spectrum. In the presence of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine and H₂O₂, the previously colourless diclofenac solution becomes intense orange. As a result, a new band at approx. 450 nm appears in the absorption spectrum. HPLC analysis has shown that the concentration of diclofenac decreases with time. TD-DFT calculations using the CAM-B3LYP/6-31+G (d, p) method have been conducted to confirm experimental data concerning the formation of a new band at λ_max = 450 nm.

Synthesis, characterization, third-order non-linear optical properties and DFT studies of novel SUBO bridged ball-type metallophthalocyanines

Novel 4,4'-(((2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane-3,9-diyl)bis(2-methylpropane-2,1-diyl))bis(oxy)) (SUBO) bridged ball-type metallophthalocyanines were synthesized starting from 4,4'-(((2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane-3,9-diyl)bis(2-methylpropane-2,1-diyl))bis(oxy))diphthalonitrile with convenient metal salts in 2-N,N-dimethylaminoethanol. A new bisphthalonitrile compound was obtained from 2,2'-(2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5]undecane-3,9-diyl)bis(2-methylpropan-1-ol) and 4-nitrophthalonitrile in acetonitrile at reflux temperature in the presence of potassium carbonate as a catalyst. The structural characterization of the compounds was performed by elemental analysis, and infrared, ultraviolet-visible and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopic methods. Nonlinear absorptions of the phthalocyanine complexes were measured using the Z-scan technique with 7 ns pulse duration at a 532 nm wavelength. It is obvious that ball-type copperphthalocyanine has a high nonlinear absorption coeffıcient and imaginary component of the third-order susceptibility compared to other complexes. Therefore, ball-type copperphthalocyanine can be regarded as a very good candidate for optical limiting applications. Density functional theory was used for geometry optimizations and time-dependent density functional theory calculations of electronic transitions in order to compare with the experimental results. Molecular orbital and nonlinear optical analyses were also performed with density functional theory at the CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)/LANL2DZ level. The nonlinear optical analyses show that ball-type copperphthalocyanine has significantly better nonlinear optical properties in comparison to a common reference compound, urea.

Organic Heterojunction Devices Based on Phthalocyanines: A New Approach to Gas Chemosensing

Organic heterostructures have emerged as highly promising transducers to realize high performance gas sensors. The key reason for such a huge interest in these devices is the associated organic heterojunction effect in which opposite free charges are accumulated at the interface making it highly conducting, which can be exploited in producing highly sensitive and faster response kinetics gas sensors. Metal phthalocyanines (MPc) have been extensively studied to fabricate organic heterostructures because of the large possibilities of structural engineering which are correlated with their bulk thin film properties. Accordingly, in this review, we have performed a comprehensive literature survey of the recent researches reported about MPc based organic heterostructures and their application in gas sensors. These heterostructures were used in Organic Field-Effect Transistor and Molecular Semiconductor-Doped Insulator sensing device configurations, in which change in their electrical properties such as field-effect mobility and saturation current in the former and current at a fixed bias in the latter under redox gases exposure were assessed to determine the chemosensing performances. These sensing devices have shown very high sensitivity to redox gases like nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone and ammonia (NH3), which monitoring is indispensable for implementing environmental guidelines. Some of these sensors exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity to NH3 demonstrated by a detection limit of 140 ppb and excellent signal stability under variable humidity, making them among the best NH3 sensors.
