A critical review of selenium biogeochemical behavior in soil-plant system with an inference to human health

The relationship between urinary selenium levels and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A nested case–control study

Background

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for the human body. Serum Se and urinary Se are also biomarkers to assess Se exposure status. However, studies focusing on the association between urinary Se and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are rare.

Objective

To investigate the association between urinary Se and the risk of GDM.

Methods

A nested case–control study based on a prospective birth cohort in Wuhan, China, which focuses on the effects of prenatal environmental factors exposure on pregnant women and children’s health was conducted. Two hundred and twenty-six cases and 452 controls were included. Maternal urine samples were collected before GDM diagnosis, and the urinary Se levels were determined. We assessed the association of urinary Se with GDM by conditional logistic regression with maternal urinary Se level as a categorical variable, and estimated the association between Se and glucose levels by multiple linear regression. The potential modifier roles of maternal age and fetal sex have also been assessed.

Results

Lower urinary level of Se was significantly associated with a higher risk of GDM (OR = 2.35 for the tertile 1, 95% CI:1.36-4.06; adjusted OR = 1.79 for the tertile 2, 95%CI:1.09-2.95; p for trend = 0.01). Fetal sex had an interaction with Se in the association with GDM. The association was more pronounced among pregnant women with female fetuses than with male fetuses.

Discussion

Our study suggested a significant negative association between urinary Se and the risk of GDM, and this association may vary depending on the fetal sex.

Bioconversion of inorganic selenium to less toxic selenium forms by microbes: A review

In recent years, microbial conversion of inorganic selenium into an efficient and low-toxic form of selenium has attracted much attention. With the improvement of scientific awareness and the continuous progress of nanotechnology, selenium nanoparticles can not only play the unique functions of organic selenium and inorganic selenium but also have higher safety, absorption and biological activity than other selenium forms. Therefore, the focus of attention has gradually shifted beyond the level of selenium enrichment in yeast to the combination of biosynthetic selenium nanoparticles (BioSeNPs). This paper primarily reviews inorganic selenium and its conversion to less toxic organic selenium and BioSeNPs by microbes. The synthesis method and potential mechanism of organic selenium and BioSeNPs are also introduced, which provide a basis for the production of specific forms of selenium. The methods to characterize selenium in different forms are discussed to understand the morphology, size and other characteristics of selenium. In general, to obtain safer and higher selenium content products, it is necessary to develop yeast resources with higher selenium conversion and accumulation.

Selenium Speciation in Se-Enriched Soybean Grains from Biofortified Plants Grown under Different Methods of Selenium Application

Since soybean is widely cultivated around the world and has a high protein content, it is a great nutritional vehicle for increasing the dietary uptake of selenium (Se). Several studies have evaluated biofortification with Se through fertilizer application in several crops. However, it is not clear how each method and source affect the total Se content or Se species in soybean grains. This work aimed to assess the total Se content and Se speciation in Se-enriched soybean grains produced under different Se application methods in the field. The treatments consisted of Se application (soil or foliar), using organic or inorganic Se sources at 10 g ha−1 or 80 g ha−1, in two genotypes. The results showed that all treatments with inorganic Se (soil and foliar) increased the Se content in grains compared with the control. More than 80% of the total Se in grains was present as selenomethionine (SeMet), and the speciation was affected by the Se source and the method of application. The treatments using inorganic Se, applied via soil or foliar, produced the highest content of Se as SeMet in soybean grains. Finally, we propose that the preservation of the Se species in products derived from soybean grains be evaluated as the following step.

Se(IV)/Se(VI) adsorption mechanisms on natural and on Ca-modified zeolite for Mediterranean soils amended with the modified zeolite: prospects for agronomic applications

In the present study, the ability of a modified CaCl2 zeolite (Ca-Z) to both increase Se(IV) availability and restrict Se(VI) mobility in soils is examined. As it was resulted from batch experiments and verified by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopies, higher amounts of both Se species adsorbed on Ca-Z compared to natural zeolite (Z-N) forming outer-sphere complexes while the oxidation state did not alter during agitation of samples. Thereafter, Ca-Z was incorporated in six Greek soils, divided into acid and alkaline, at a 20% (w/w) rate and a series of equilibrium batch experiments were performed with soils alone and soils-Ca-Z mixtures to investigate sorption and desorption processes and mechanisms. The acid soils, either treated with Ca-Z or not, adsorbed higher amounts of Se(IV) than alkaline ones, whereas soils alone did not adsorb Se(VI) but impressively high adsorption of Se(VI) occurred in the Ca-Z-treated soils. Desorption of Se(IV) was higher from the Ca-Z-treated soils and especially from the acid soils. Higher distribution coefficients of desorption than the distribution coefficients of sorption were observed, clearly pointing to a hysteresis mechanism. The experimental data fitted with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. In the presence of Ca-Z, the Langmuir qm values increased indicating higher Se(IV) retention while Langmuir bL values decreased suggesting lower bonding strength and higher Se(IV) mobility. Overall, treating the soils with Ca-Z increased Se(IV) adsorption and mobility whereas it provided sites for Se(VI) adsorption that did not exist in the studied soils.

GPX4 utilization by selenium is required to alleviate cadmium-induced ferroptosis and pyroptosis in sheep kidney

Cadmium (Cd), a persistent and harmful heavy metal in the environment, can accumulate in the kidneys and cause nephrotoxicity. Selenium (Se) is a beneficial natural element that alleviates the toxicity of Cd. To ascertain the relationship between the protective mechanism of Se against Cd nephrotoxicity and ferroptosis and pyroptosis, we randomly divided 48 sheep into four groups and treated them with Cd chloride and/or sodium selenite for 50 days. The data confirmed that Cd apparently resulted in impaired kidney histology and function, depletion of GSH and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate contents and CAT and SOD activities, elevation of MDA level, as well as the reduction in selenoprotein mRNA (GPX1, GPX4, TXNRD1, SELP) levels and GPX4 protein level and immunofluorescence intensity. Meanwhile, Cd induced ferroptosis by causing iron overload, up-regulating PTGS2, NCOA4, TFR1, and LC3B mRNA levels and PTGS2 and LC3B-II/LC3B-I protein levels, reducing SLC7A11 and FTH1 mRNA and protein levels, and enhancing the immunofluorescence co-localization of FTH1/LC3B. Moreover, it was also found that Cd triggered pyroptosis, which was evidenced by the increase of NLRP3 immunohistochemical positive signal, GSDMD-N immunofluorescence intensity, IL-1β and IL-18 release and the levels of pyroptosis-related mRNA (NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, GSDMD, IL-1β and IL-18) and proteins (NLRP3, Caspase-1p20, GSDMD-N, IL-1β and IL-18). Notably, Se increased the expression level of GPX4 and the transcription factors TFAP2c and SP1, and ameliorated Cd-induced changes in aforementioned factors. In conclusion, GPX4 utilization by Se might be required to alleviate Cd-induced ferroptosis and pyroptosis in sheep kidney.

Identification of the spatial patterns and controlling factors of Se in soil and rice in Guangxi through hot spot analysis

Selenium (Se) is essential to human health, anti-cancer, possessing antioxidant, and antiviral properties. In this study, the spatial patterns of rice Se and their varying relationship with soil Se on a regional scale were studied using hot spot analysis for the agricultural soils in Guangxi. According to the hot and cold spot maps, rice Se correlates positively with soil Se in Guangxi agricultural soils. High rice Se accompanies high soil Se in the central part of Guangxi (e.g., Liuzhou, Laibin), and low rice Se is in line with low soil Se in the western part (e.g., Baise). However, the hot spot analysis maps indicate that southwestern Guangxi exhibits a special characteristic of low rice Se with high soil Se (e.g., Chongzuo). This special pattern is strongly associated with the high concentrations of Fe₂O₃ (ferromanganese nodules) in the carbonate rock area. The hot spot analysis proves useful in revealing the spatial patterns of rice Se in Guangxi and identifying the hidden patterns.

Topographic constraints on the distribution of selenium in the supergene environment: A case study at Yutangba, China

The local topography and leaching conditions significantly affect the spatial distribution of selenium (Se) in the local environment. However, the driving factors controlling Se distribution have not been well addressed. In this paper, taking Yutangba, a village known for human selenosis in China, as an example, we demonstrate how topographic factors influence the spatial distribution of Se in soils and plants. In the scenarios of slope ≤25°, the correlations among slope and soil/extractable/plant Se are significantly negative (P < 0.05), whereas they become weak or unclear when the slope is > 25°, suggesting that 25° of slope is a critical transition boundary. Similar observations were further verified by the soil erosion modulus (SEM) and the surface runoff intensity index (SRI), indicating that Se transport via soil erosion is limited and accounts for 11.2-17% of the soil Se, while surface runoff plays a dominant role in the Se distribution, accounting for 83-88.1%. Soil extractable Se is negatively correlated with SRI (Pearson r = -0.87 at slope < 25°), showing that the migration capacity of Se is higher at steep terrain and controlled by topography through soil erosion and surface runoff. The positive relationship between plant Se and soil/extractable Se demonstrates that topography indirectly influences plant Se through soil Se bioavailability. Abnormally local Se enrichment observed at the elevated steep hillside (>25°) in northwestern Yutangba primarily was resulted from the weathering of Se-rich rocks. These observations confirm that the topographic slope gradient influences the transport and spatial distribution of soil Se, implying that topography should be considered when studying the spatial distribution of soil Se at a regional scale, especially for the Se-poor belt in China.

Spatial Metallomics Reveals Preferable Accumulation of Methylated Selenium in a Single Seed of the Hyperaccumulator Cardamine violifolia†

Cardamine violifolia is a Se hyperaccumulator found in Enshi, China. In this study, spatial metallomics was applied to visualize the distribution and speciation of Se in a single seed of C. violifolia. It was found that Se reached 1729.89 ± 28.14 mg/kg and the main Se species were SeCys and SeMet in bulk seeds. Further in situ study on a single seed found that the methylated Se species located mostly in the episperm. This is the first visualized evidence of the in situ distribution of methylated Se species in the seeds of C. violifolia. In all, spatial metallomics finds a preferable accumulation of methylated Se species in the seed coat, which deepens the understanding of the tolerance of Se by C. violifolia. The protocol applied in this study may also be used for the understanding of the tolerance of heavy metals/metalloids in other hyperaccumulators.

Evaluation of Selenium Nanoparticles in Inducing Disease Resistance against Spot Blotch Disease and Promoting Growth in Wheat under Biotic Stress

In the present study, SeNPs were synthesized using Melia azedarach leaf extracts and investigated for growth promotion in wheat under the biotic stress of spot blotch disease. The phytosynthesized SeNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The in vitro efficacy of different concentrations of phytosynthesized SeNPs (i.e., 100 μg/mL, 150 μg/mL, 200 μg/mL, 250 μg/mL, and 300 μg/mL) was evaluated using the well diffusion method, which reported that 300 μg/mL showed maximum fungus growth inhibition. For in vivo study, different concentrations (10, 20, 30, and 40 mg/L) of SeNPs were applied exogenously to evaluate the morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters under control conditions and determine when infection was induced. Among all treatments, 30 mg/L of SeNPs performed well and increased the plant height by 2.34% compared to the control and 30.7% more than fungus-inoculated wheat. Similarly, fresh plant weight and dry weight increased by 17.35% and 13.43% over the control and 20.34% and 52.48% over the fungus-treated wheat, respectively. In leaf surface area and root length, our findings were 50.11% and 10.37% higher than the control and 40% and 71% higher than diseased wheat, respectively. Plant physiological parameters i.e., chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content, were increased 14, 133, and 16.1 times over the control and 157, 253, and 42 times over the pathogen-inoculated wheat, respectively. Our findings regarding carotenoid content, relative water content, and the membrane stability index were 29-, 49-, and 81-fold higher than the control and 187-, 63-, and 48-fold higher than the negative control, respectively. In the case of plant biochemical parameters, proline, sugar, flavonoids, and phenolic contents were recorded at 6, 287, 11, and 34 times higher than the control and 32, 107, 33, and 4 times more than fungus-inoculated wheat, respectively. This study is considered the first biocompatible approach to evaluate the potential of green-synthesized SeNPs as growth-promoting substances in wheat under the spot blotch stress and effective management strategy to inhibit fungal growth.

Antifungal activity of green synthesized selenium nanoparticles and their effect on physiological, biochemical, and antioxidant defense system of mango under mango malformation disease

Plant extract-based green synthesis of nanoparticles is an emerging class of nanotechnology that has revolutionized the entire field of biological sciences. Green synthesized nanoparticles are used as super-growth promoters and antifungal agents. In this study, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were synthesized using Melia azedarach leaves extract as the main reducing and stabilizing agent and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The green synthesized SeNPs were exogenously applied on Mangifera indica infected with mango malformation disease. The SeNPs at a concentration of 30 μg/mL were found to be the best concentration which enhanced the physiological (chlorophyll and membrane stability index), and biochemical (proline and soluble sugar) parameters. The antioxidant defense system was also explored, and it was reported that green synthesized SeNPs significantly reduced the biotic stress by enhancing enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities. In vitro antifungal activity of SeNPs reported that 300 μg/mL concentration inhibited the Fusarium mangiferae the most. This study is considered the first biocompatible approach to evaluate the potential of green synthesized SeNPs to improve the health of mango malformation-infected plants and effective management strategy to inhibit the growth of F. mangifera.

Intercropping of Cyphomandra betacea with Different Ploidies of Solanum Sect. Solanum (Solanaceae) Wild Vegetables Increase Their Selenium Uptakes

Selenium (Se) deficiency causes various diseases in humans. Se can be obtained from fruits and vegetables. In this study, the fruit tree Cyphomandra betacea was intercropped with three Solanum sect. Solanum (Solanaceae) wild vegetables [diploid (S. photeinocarpum), tetraploid (colchicine-induced S. photeinocarpum), and hexaploid (S. nigrum)], respectively, and Se uptakes of these plants were determined by a pot experiment. Intercropping decreased the biomass, photosynthetic pigment content, and superoxide dismutase activity of C. betacea, but increased the peroxidase (POD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, and soluble protein content of C. betacea. These indicators' values of sect. Solanum increased after intercropping. The contents of Se increased in C. betacea and sect. Solanum after intercropping. Intercropped with diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid increased the shoot Se contents in C. betacea by 13.73%, 17.49%, and 26.50%, respectively, relative to that of C. betacea monoculture. Intercropped with C. betacea increased the shoot Se contents in diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid by 35.22%, 68.86%, and 74.46%, respectively, compared with their respective monoculture. The biomass and Se content of intercropped sect. Solanum showed linear relationships with the biomass and Se content of their monocultures. The biomass and Se content of intercropped C. betacea also exhibited linear relationships with that of sect. Solanum monocultures. Correlation and grey relational analyses revealed that the CAT activity, POD activity, and soluble protein content were the top three indicators closely associated with the C. betacea shoot Se content. The POD activity, soluble protein content, and translocation factor were the top three indicators closely associated with sect. Solanum shoot Se content. Therefore, intercropping can promote the Se uptake in C. betacea and sect. Solanum wild vegetables.

Mechanisms of changing speciation and bioavailability of selenium in agricultural mollisols of northern cold regions

The distribution, speciation, and bioavailability of selenium (Se) - an essential micronutrient for human beings - in agricultural soils influence the resource recovery of agricultural benefits and the sustainable use of Se in agroecosystems. Quantitative understanding in this regard however remains limited in the world's mollisol agroecosystems, despite their critical importance in securing global food supply. Herein, a systematic investigation of Se in the river sediment-irrigation water-mollisols-rhizosphere-rice seeds continuum, at the core zone of the northern mollisol regions, was conducted to elucidate the hydrological-hydrogeochemical processes and mechanisms responsible for the distribution and bioavailability of Se. The content of total Se in the mollisols ranged between 0.12 and 0.54 mg/kg with an average of 0.31 mg/kg. At the riverside flood plains, humic-acid bound Se accounted on average for 39 % of total Se. This pool of Se can be transformed to water-soluble and ion-exchangeable Se(VI), supporting a higher potential of Se bioavailability at riparian agricultural mollisols. For mollisol lands far from the river channels, the topography affects the speciation and partitioning of Se presumably through regulating water retention and organic matter transport. Moreover, altering pH and redox conditions in response to irrigation with the river water may boost Se bioavailability in weakly acidic and high Eh mollisols. It can be in part ascribed to the transformation of organic-bound Se along with infiltrated oxygenated water that leads to the increase of water-soluble and ion-exchangeable Se. These findings reinforce that hydrological-hydrogeochemical perturbations due to irrigation with surface water need to be assessed carefully in the management of Se resources in the mollisol agroecosystems.

Selenium species transforming along soil-plant continuum and their beneficial roles for horticultural crops

Selenium (Se) acquirement from daily diet can help reduce the risk of many diseases. The edible parts of crop plants are the main source of dietary Se, while the Se content in crops is determined by Se bioavailability in soil. We summarize recent research on the biogeochemical cycle of Se driven by specific microorganisms and emphasize the oxidizing process in the Se cycle. Moreover, we discuss how plant root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms affect soil Se availability. Finally, we cover beneficial microorganisms, including endophytes, that promote crop quality and improve crop tolerance to environmental stresses. Se availability to plants depends on the balance between adsorption and desorption, reduction, methylation and oxidation, which are determined by interactions among soil properties, microbial communities and plants. Reduction and methylation processes governed by bacteria or fungi lead to declined Se availability, while Se oxidation regulated by Se-oxidizing microorganisms increases Se availability to plants. Despite a much lower rate of Se oxidization compared to reduction and methylation, the potential roles of microbial communities in increasing Se bioavailability are probably largely underestimated. Enhancing Se oxidation and Se desorption are crucial for the promotion of Se bioavailability and uptake, particularly in Se-deficient soils. Beneficial roles of Se are reported in terms of improved crop growth and quality, and enhanced protection against fungal diseases and abiotic stress through improved photosynthetic traits, increased sugar and amino acid contents, and promoted defense systems. Understanding Se transformation along the plant-soil continuum is crucial for agricultural production and even for human health.

Iron plaque effects on selenium and cadmium stabilization in Cd-contaminated seleniferous rice seedlings

Dietary intake of selenium (Se)-enriched rice has benefit for avoiding Se-deficient disease, but there is a risk of excessive cadmium (Cd) intake. Through hydroponic culture and adsorption-desorption experiments, this paper focused on Se and Cd uptake in rice seedlings associated with the interactive effects of Se (Se⁴⁺ or Se⁶⁺), Cd, and iron (Fe) plaque. The formation of Fe plaque was promoted by Fe²⁺ and inhibited by Cd but not related with Se species. Shoot Se (Se⁴⁺ or Se⁶⁺) uptake was not affected by Fe plaque in most treatments, except that shoot Se concentrations were decreased by Fe plaque when Se⁴⁺ and Cd co-exposure. Shoot Cd concentrations were always inhibited by Fe plaque, regardless of Se species. Inhibiting Cd adsorption onto root surface (Se⁴⁺  + Cd) or increased Cd retention in Fe plaque (Se⁶⁺  + Cd) is an important mechanism for Fe plaque to reduce Cd uptake by rice. However, we found that DCB Cd concentrations (Cd adsorbed by Fe plaque) were not always positively correlated with Fe plaque amounts and always negatively correlated with the distribution ratios of Cd mass in root to that in Fe plaque (abbreviated as DRCMRF; r =  - 0.942^**); meanwhile, with the increase of DCB Fe concentration, the directions of variations of DCB Cd concentration and DRCMRF were affected by Se species. It indicated that the root system is also an important factor to affect DCB Cd concentration and inhibit Cd uptake, which is mediated by Se species. This paper provides a new understanding of Fe plaque-mediated interactive effect of Se and Cd uptakes in rice, which is beneficial for the remediation of Cd-contaminated and Cd-contaminated seleniferous areas.

Biological Activity of Selenium and Its Impact on Human Health

Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring metalloid element essential to human and animal health in trace amounts but it is harmful in excess. Se plays a substantial role in the functioning of the human organism. It is incorporated into selenoproteins, thus supporting antioxidant defense systems. Selenoproteins participate in the metabolism of thyroid hormones, control reproductive functions and exert neuroprotective effects. Among the elements, Se has one of the narrowest ranges between dietary deficiency and toxic levels. Its level of toxicity may depend on chemical form, as inorganic and organic species have distinct biological properties. Over the last decades, optimization of population Se intake for the prevention of diseases related to Se deficiency or excess has been recognized as a pressing issue in modern healthcare worldwide. Low selenium status has been associated with an increased risk of mortality, poor immune function, cognitive decline, and thyroid dysfunction. On the other hand, Se concentrations slightly above its nutritional levels have been shown to have adverse effects on a broad spectrum of neurological functions and to increase the risk of type-2 diabetes. Comprehension of the selenium biochemical pathways under normal physiological conditions is therefore an important issue to elucidate its effect on human diseases. This review gives an overview of the role of Se in human health highlighting the effects of its deficiency and excess in the body. The biological activity of Se, mainly performed through selenoproteins, and its epigenetic effect is discussed. Moreover, a brief overview of selenium phytoremediation and rhizofiltration approaches is reported.

Synergy of Selenium and Silicon to Mitigate Abiotic Stresses: a Review

It is evident the increase in the occurrence of different stresses that impact agriculture and so there has been an increase in research to study stress mitigators including silicon (Si) and selenium (Se). However, the great challenge to be answered would be to assess whether it is possible to maximize these benefits by combining these two elements. Therefore, this review focused on discussing the feasibility of combining Se and Si in mitigating abiotic stresses and also measuring gains in yield and quality of agricultural products. These are the main challenges of plant mineral nutrition with these two elements for sustainable cultivation, ensuring food security with the possibility of improving human health. As the mode of application of an element can change absorption and assimilation processes and consequently the plant's response, it is important to consider research with supply of these elements via the foliar and root route. Thus, we highlighted the potential of the combined application of Se and Si and whether or not they are relevant to overcome the individual application in stress mitigation or even in plants without stress. In addition, we pointed out new directions for research on this topic in order to reinforce the combined use of stress relievers and their potential benefit to crop plants.

Fluvial Deposition and Land Use Change Control Selenium Occurrence in Mollisols of Cold Region Agroecosystems

Mollisols support the most productive agroecosystems in the world. Despite their critical links to food quality and human health, the varying distributions of selenium (Se) species and factors governing Se mobility in the mollisol vadose zone remain elusive. This research reveals that, in northern mollisol agroecosystems, Se hotspots (≥0.32 mg/kg) prevail along the regional river systems draining the Lesser Khingan Mountains, where piedmont Se-rich oil shales are the most probable source of regional Se. While selenate and selenite dominate Se species in the water-soluble and absorbed pools, mollisol organic matter is the major host for Se. Poorly crystalline and crystalline Fe oxides are subordinate in Se retention, hosting inorganic and organic Se at levels comparable to those in the adsorbed pool. The depth-dependent distributions of mollisol Se species for the non-cropland and cropland sites imply a predominance of reduced forms of Se under the mildly acidic and reducing conditions that, in turn, are variably impacted by agricultural land use. These findings therefore highlight that fluvial deposition and land use change together are the main drivers of the spatial variability and speciation of mollisol Se.

First review on the selenium status in Germany covering the last 50 years and on the selenium content of selected food items

INTRODUCTION

Selenium is important for human health. However, the selenium status and selenium intake of the German population has not been recorded in a representative study so far.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Thus, literature from the last 50 years was screened in a systematic way and the results of various studies were pulled together to shed light on the selenium status of the German population. Moreover, the selenium content of selected food items that were either found on the German market or grown in Germany was researched and evaluated.

RESULTS

Of 3542 articles identified, 37 studies met the inclusion criteria. These 37 studies comprised a total of 8,010 healthy adults living in Germany with a weighted arithmetic mean of 82 μg/l selenium in plasma or serum. The results will form a basis for interpreting upcoming results from national food consumption surveys. Furthermore, 363 selenium values for 199 food items were identified out of 20 data sources-published or analysed between 2002 and 2019. An estimation of the selenium intake of the German population will be possible with this data in future nutrition surveys.

A membrane-based green and low-cost system for ensuring safe drinking water in a selenium-affected region

Towards an efficient, low-cost solution to the problem of contamination of groundwater by selenium leached out from earth's mineral crust, a new system is developed using a novel graphene-based nanocomposite membrane. The system not only purified selenium-contaminated groundwater with high degree but also ensured safe disposal of the rejected selenium through algorithmic chemical stabilization in a mineral matrix. All experiments were conducted with live contaminated water from selenium affected area rather than using synthetic solution in a semi-pilot unit involving a largely fouling-free flat sheet cross-flow membrane module. Pure water flux of up to 190 Lm^-2h^-1(LMH) with 96-97% selenium rejection at an optimum operating pressure of only 14 bar could be achieved. Rejected selenium was stabilized in mineral matrix through chemical coagulation-precipitation using suitable coagulants following prior optimization of the critical operating parameters by Model-based calibration toolbox (MATLAB R2020a). A high degree of stabilization efficiency (99.8%) could be achieved as reflected in an error-index of only 1.13%. For selenium-affected region, the membrane-integrated hybrid treatment system proved to be a potential candidate technology offering safe drinking water at an approximate cost of only 1.77 $/m³ which was found to be affordable to the consumers in subsequent willingness to pay survey.

The Integral Boosting Effect of Selenium on the Secondary Metabolism of Higher Plants

Selenium is a micronutrient with a wide range of functions in animals, including humans, and in microorganisms such as microalgae. However, its role in plant metabolism remains ambiguous. Recent studies of Se supplementation showed that not only does it increase the content of the element itself, but also affects the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plants. The purpose of this review is to analyze and summarize the available data on the place of selenium in the secondary metabolism of plants and its effect on the accumulation of some plant metabolites (S- and N-containing secondary metabolites, terpenes, and phenolic compounds). In addition, possible molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways underlying these effects are discussed. It should be noted that available data on the effect of Se on the accumulation of secondary metabolites are inconsistent and contradictory. According to some studies, selenium has a positive effect on the accumulation of certain metabolites, while other similar studies show a negative effect or no effect at all. The following aspects were identified as possible ways of regulating plant secondary metabolism by Se-supplementation: changes occurring in primary S/N metabolism, hormonal regulation, redox metabolism, as well as at the transcriptomic level of secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In all likelihood, the confusion in the results can be explained by other, more complex regulatory mechanisms in which selenium is involved and which affect the production of metabolites. Further study on the involvement of various forms of selenium in metabolic and signaling pathways is crucial for a deeper understanding of its role in growth, development, and health of plants, as well as the regulatory mechanisms behind them.

Highland barley grain and soil surveys reveal the widespread deficiency of dietary selenium intake of Tibetan adults living along Yalung Zangpo River

Objective

In order to assess selenium (Se) flux through the soil-plant-human chain in Tibet plateau and explore the reason why local Tibetan adult residents from large scale agricultural production areas in Tibet lacked daily Se intake.

Methods

A total of 210 intact highland barley plants and their corresponding cultivated topsoil samples were collected in fields of 14 agricultural counties along Yalung Zangpo River and quantitative dietary data were collected from a cross-sectional survey using a cultural-specific food frequency questionnaire that contained all local Tibetan foods in 2020.

Results

The mean value of The estimated daily Se dietary intake by each participant was 17.1 ± 1.9 μg/day/adult, the Se concentration in topsoil and highland barley grain were 0.128 ± 0.015 mg/kg and 0.017 ± 0.003 mg/kg, respectively. Although highland barley was the first contributor of dietary Se in local adult residents (34.2%), the dietary Se intake provided by highland barley only about 10% of the EAR value (50 μg/day/adult) currently. A significantly positive relationship was determined between soil total Se content (STSe), available Se content (SASe) and highland barley grain Se content (GSe). The amount of Se in food system depends on a number of soil properties (TOC, pH, clay content, Fe/Mn/Al oxides), climate variables (MAP, MAT) and terrain factor (altitude).

Conclusion

To sum up, it can be inferred that the insufficient dietary Se intake of Tibetan adult population living along Yalung Zangbo River is mainly caused by the low Se content in highland barley grain, which was result from the low Se content in cultivated soil. In order to enable adult participants in the present study to achieve recommended dietary Se-intake levels, agronomic fortification with selenised fertilizers applied to highland barley could be a great solution. It is necessary to combine the influencing factors, and comprehensively consider the spatial variation of local soil properties, climatic and topographic conditions, and planting systems.

Nano-selenium and Macleaya cordata Extracts Improved Immune Function and Reduced Oxidative Damage of Sows and IUGR Piglets After Heat Stress of Sows in Late Gestation

To investigate the effects of nano-selenium (nano-Se) and Macleaya cordata extracts (MCE) on immune function and oxidative damage of sows and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) piglets exposed to heat stress (HS) in large-scale farms, a 2 × 2 factorial design was adopted in this test, and the two factors were nano-Se (0, 0.50 mg/kg) and MCE (0, 500 mg/kg). A total of 80 sows ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc, parity 2) were used in a 25-day trial from day 90 of gestation to delivery with 20 replications per group and 1 sow per replication. The dietary treatments of sows were as follows: (1) CON group, basic diet (0.30 mg/kg added Se, sodium selenite); (2) Nano-Se group, basic diet (0.00 mg/kg added Se) + 0.50 mg/kg added nano-Se; (3) MCE group, basic diet (0.00 mg/kg added Se) + 500 mg/kg added MCE; and (4) Combined group, basic diet (0.00 mg/kg added Se) + 0.50 mg/kg added nano-Se and 500 mg/kg added MCE. The activities of serum SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px of sows and IUGR piglets were significantly increased in MCE group and combined group, and the MDA content was extremely decreased. There were extreme differences in serum IgG level of sows and IUGR piglets, colostrum, and serum IgM level of IUGR piglets in MCE group and combined group compared with CON group. Maternal combined diets increased greatly the levels of serum IL-10 and IFN-γ of sows and IUGR piglets, and decreased extremely the contents of serum IL-1β and TNF-α. MCE alone or combination with nano-Se in sow diets decreased greatly mRNA level of Hsp70 and increased mRNA level of Hsp27 in sows and IUGR piglets. In conclusion, nano-Se and/or MCE can be added to sow diets for the amelioration of HS-induced oxidative damage through improving immune function.

Antioxidant effects of Se-glutathione peroxidase in alcoholic liver disease

Oxidative damage induced by ethanol and its metabolites is one of the factors that fuels the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Selenium (Se) is an effective cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and has antioxidant effects that improve ALD. In patients with ALD, ethanol-induced oxidative damage inhibits the synthesis of related Se-containing proteins such as: selenoprotein P (Sepp1), albumin (ALB), and GPx in the liver, thus decreasing the overall Se level in patients. Both Se deficiency and excess can affect the expression of GPx, resulting in damage to the antioxidant defense system. This damage enhances oxidative stress by increasing the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body, which aggravates the inflammatory response, lipid metabolism disorder, and lipid peroxidation and worsens ALD symptoms. A cascade of oxidative damages caused by ALD will deplete selenium deposition in the body, stimulate the expression of Gpx1, Sepp1, and Gpx4, and thus mobilize systemic selenoproteins, which can restore GPx activity in the hepatocytes of ALD patients, reduce the levels of reactive oxygen species and alleviate oxidative stress, the inflammatory response, lipid metabolism disorder, and lipid peroxidation, thus helping to mitigate ALD. This review provides a reference for future ALD studies that evaluate the regulation of Se levels and contributes to studies on the potential pathological mechanisms of Se imbalance in ALD.

Foliar Application of Reaction Products Derived from Selenite Removal by Iron Monosulfide for Brassica rapa ssp. Chinensis L

The extensive application of FeS in environmental remediation requires the recovery and reuse of reaction products between FeS and pollutants. Therefore, foliar application of reaction products derived from selenite [Se(IV)] removal by FeS for pak choi was performed. The removal rate of Se(IV) by 100 mg/L FeS was 0.047 h^-1. 93.2% of Se(IV) was reduced to Se(0), and FeS was correspondingly oxidized to goethite (78.9%), lepidocrocite (21.1%), and S(0) (91.5%) based on the analysis of X-ray absorption fine structure. The reaction products promoted the growth of pak choi in terms of fresh biomass, vitamin C, and protein, ascribed to the key roles of Fe and S in enhancing the electron transfer rate and light conversion rate. Furthermore, the application of reaction products decreased by 64% of disease incidence as compared with the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola-infected control. The total Se content in plants increased to 576 μg/kg and was composed of 11.9% of SeMeCys, 29.8% of SeMet, and 58.3% of SeCys after exposure to reaction products, which is beneficial to the human dietary intake from pak choi. This study demonstrated that the reaction products between FeS and Se(IV) could be recovered and applied as a nano-enabled strategy to prevent crop insecurity.

Artemisia argyi water extract promotes selenium uptake of peach seedlings

Soil in most areas of the world is selenium (Se) deficient, which results a low Se content in agricultural products. To improve the fruit tree Se accumulation, the effects of different Artemisia argyi water extract concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400-fold dilutions) on the growth and Se accumulation of peach seedlings were studied by a pot experiment. A 300- and 400-fold dilution of A. argyi water extract increased the root and shoot biomass (dry weight), leaf chlorophyll a content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and peroxidase (POD) activity of peach seedlings, but decreased the leaf chlorophyll a/b. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations had no significant effects on peach leaf chlorophyll a content of peach seedlings, but increased the leaf carotenoid content, catalase (CAT) activity, and soluble protein content. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations increased the total Se, inorganic Se, and organic contents in roots and shoots of peach seedlings to some extent. Furthermore, A. argyi water extract concentration exhibited a linear relationship with the root and shoot total Se contents. Compared with the control, the 100-, 200-, 300-, and 400-fold dilutions of A. argyi water extract increased the shoot total Se content by 18.95%, 31.31%, 39.32%, and 51.59%, respectively. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations also increased the leaf Se metabolism-related enzyme activities of peach seedlings, including the activities of adenosine triphosphate sulfurase (ATPS), adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase (APR), and serine acetyltransferase (SAT), as well as selenocysteine methyltransferase (SMT) to some extent. Moreover, correlation and grey relational analyses revealed the root total Se content, CAT activity, and ATPS activity to be closely associated with the total shoot Se content. Therefore, applying A. argyi water extract can thus promote the growth and Se uptake of peach seedlings, and the future study should focus on the application effects of Se uptake in peach fruits.

The importance and status of the micronutrient selenium in South Africa: a review

Selenium (Se) is a vital micronutrient with widespread biological action but leads to toxicity when taken in excessive amounts. The biological benefits of Se are mainly derived from its presence in active sites of selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx). An enzyme whose role is to protect tissues against oxidative stress by catalysing the reduction of peroxidase responsible for various forms of cellular damage. The benefits of Se can be harvested when proper regulations of its intake are used. In South Africa, Se distribution in people's diets and animals are low with socio-economic factors and heterogeneous spread of Se in soil throughout the country playing a significant role. The possible causes of low Se in soils may be influenced by underlying geological material, climatic conditions, and anthropogenic activities. Sedimentary rock formations show higher Se concentrations compared to igneous and metamorphic rock formations. Higher Se concentrations in soils dominates in humid and sub-humid areas of South Africa. Furthermore, atmospheric acid deposition dramatically influences the availability of Se to plants. The studies reviewed in this article have shown that atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is the most utilised analytical technique for total Se concentration determination in environmental samples and there is a lack of speciation data for Se concentrations. Shortcomings in Se studies have been identified, and the future research directions of Se in South Africa have been discussed.

Selenium: a potent regulator of ferroptosis and biomass production

Emerging evidence supports the notion that selenium (Se) plays a beneficial role in plant development for modern crop production and is considered an essential micronutrient and the predominant source of plants. However, the essential role of selenium in plant metabolism remains unclear. When used in moderate concentrations, selenium promotes plant physiological processes such as enhancing plant growth, increasing antioxidant capacity, reducing reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation and offering stress resistance by preventing ferroptosis cell death. Ferroptosis, a recently discovered mechanism of regulated cell death (RCD) with unique features such as iron-dependant accumulation of lipid peroxides, is distinctly different from other known forms of cell death. Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity plays a significant role in scavenging the toxic by-products of lipid peroxidation in plants. A low level of GPX activity in plants causes high oxidative stress, which leads to ferroptosis. An integrated view of ferroptosis and selenium in plants and the selenium-mediated nanofertilizers (SeNPs) have been discussed in more recent studies. For instance, selenium supplementation enhanced GPX4 expression and increased TFH cell (Follicular helper T) numbers and the gene transcriptional program, which prevent lipid peroxidase and protect cells from ferroptosis. However, though ferroptosis in plants is similar to that in animals, only few studies have focused on plant-specific ferroptosis; the research on ferroptosis in plants is still in its infancy. Understanding the implication of selenium with relevance to ferroptosis is indispensable for plant bioresource technology. In this review, we hypothesize that blocking ferroptosis cell death improves plant immunity and protects plants from abiotic and biotic stresses. We also examine how SeNPs can be the basis for emerging unconventional and advanced technologies for algae/bamboo biomass production. For instance, algae treated with SeNPs accumulate high lipid profile in algal cells that could thence be used for biodiesel production. We also suggest that further studies in the field of SeNPs are essential for the successful application of this technology for the large-scale production of plant biomass.

Toxic effects of antimony in plants: Reasons and remediation possibilities-A review and future prospects

Antimony (Sb) is a dangerous heavy metal (HM) that poses a serious threat to the health of plants, animals, and humans. Leaching from mining wastes and weathering of sulfide ores are the major ways of introducing Sb into our soils and aquatic environments. Crops grown on Sb-contaminated soils are a major reason of Sb entry into humans by eating Sb-contaminated foods. Sb toxicity in plants reduces seed germination and root and shoot growth, and causes substantial reduction in plant growth and final productions. Moreover, Sb also induces chlorosis, causes damage to the photosynthetic apparatus, reduces membrane stability and nutrient uptake, and increases oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing plant growth and development. The threats induced by Sb toxicity and Sb concentration in soils are increasing day by day, which would be a major risk to crop production and human health. Additionally, the lack of appropriate measures regarding the remediation of Sb-contaminated soils will further intensify the current situation. Therefore, future research must be aimed at devising appropriate measures to mitigate the hazardous impacts of Sb toxicity on plants, humans, and the environment and to prevent the entry of Sb into our ecosystem. We have also described the various strategies to remediate Sb-contaminated soils to prevent its entry into the human food chain. Additionally, we also identified the various research gaps that must be addressed in future research programs. We believe that this review will help readers to develop the appropriate measures to minimize the toxic effects of Sb and its entry into our ecosystem. This will ensure the proper food production on Sb-contaminated soils.

Comparative physiological and soil microbial community structural analysis revealed that selenium alleviates cadmium stress in Perilla frutescens

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity not only affects plant growth and development, but also affects human health through the food chain. Several studies have demonstrated that Selenium (Se) alleviates Cd stress in plants; however, whether and how Se-alleviated Cd stress by regulating the structure of soil microbial community remain largely unclear. Here, we investigated the alleviating effects of exogenous applied Se (foliar spraying or root application) on plant growth under Cd stress in perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) by measuring the biomass, photosynthetic fluorescence parameters, root cell wall components and soil microbial community structure and diversity. Under Cd stress, perilla seedlings supplemented with Se increased chlorophyll content. Foliar spraying Se increased the levels of relative chlorophyll content (ΦII), photosynthetic system II (Φ_PSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) in perilla leaves under Cd stress; while, root application of Se increased the levels of photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), water use efficiency (WUE) and stomatal limitation value (Ls) under Cd stress. Compared with Cd toxicity alone, root application of Se increased the contents of hemicellulosic 1 and hemicellulosic 2 in the cell wall of perilla roots. Cd toxicity or root application of Se did not affect soil bacterial community diversity. Root application of Se increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Fibrobacteres, Sphingomonas and Nitrosospira in Cd-contaminated soil, and thereby improving soil microbial community structure, finally promoting the growth of perilla seedlings.

Combined effect of humic acid and vetiver grass on remediation of cadmium-polluted water

Effective treatment of water pollution is an economic and social requirement globally. Humic acid (HA) is a popular mitigator for such waters. However, the combined effect of HA and restorative plants on cadmium (Cd) remediation is not well understood. Therefore, we experimented on Cd remediation using HA along with vetiver grass and HA-vetiver grass. We observed that vetiver grass effectively removed Cd at 15～30 mg/L. The accumulation capacity of the root was significantly higher than the shoots (P < 0.05), and Cd distribution followed the trend: cell wall > organelle > soluble substance (F1 > F2 > F3). The plant's accumulation capacity against 25 mg/L Cd was higher than for other treatments. The root accumulation capacity was much higher (702.3 mg/L) than those without added HA. However, upon adding 200 and 250 mg/L HA, the phytoremediation of Cd in the root and shoot significantly reduced (P < 0.05). Conversely, HA improved the Cd removal efficiency of the plants, notably at a lower HA concentration (150 mg/L). In addition, HA (especially at 150 mg/L) influences Cd distribution in vetiver cells (P < 0.05) and can significantly increase the proportion of Cd in the root cytoplasm. Consequently, a low HA concentration can significantly improve Cd accumulation in the vetiver, shorten the metal's bioremediation cycle, and improve the biological absorption efficiency.

Rape straw application facilitates Se and Cd mobilization in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils by enhancing microbial iron reduction

Many naturally seleniferous soils are faced with Cd contamination problem, which severely limits crop cultivation in these areas. Straw returning has been widely applied in agricultural production due to its various benefits to soil physicochemical properties, soil fertility, and crops yield. However, effects of straw application on the fates of Se and Cd in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils remain largely unclear. Therefore, the effects of straw application on the fates of Se and Cd in Cd-contaminated seleniferous soils were investigated in this study. The results showed that iron reduction driven by Clostridium and Anaeromyxbacter was responsible for the variations in Se and Cd fates in soil. Straw application respectively increased the gene copy numbers of Clostridium and Anaeromyxbacter by 19.5-56.3% and 33.6-39.8%, thus promoting iron reductive dissolution, eventually resulting in a high release amount of Se and Cd from Fe(III) (oxyhydr) oxides. Under reducing conditions, the released Cd was adsorbed by the newly formed metal sulfides or reacted with sulfides to generate CdS precipitates. Straw application decreased the soil exchangeable Se and soil exchangeable Cd concentration during flooding phase. However, straw application significantly increased Se/Cd in soil solution which had the highest bioavailability during flooding. In addition, straw application increased soil exchangeable Se concentration, but it had no significant effects on soil exchangeable Cd concentration after soil drainage. Taken together, straw application increased Se bioavailability and Cd mobility. Therefore, straw application is an effective method for improving Se bioavailability, but it is not suitable for the application to Cd-contaminated paddy soils. In the actual agricultural production, straw could be applied in seleniferous soils to improve Se bioavailability. At the same time, straw application should be cautious to avoid the release of Cd from Cd-contaminated soil.

Functional constituents of plant-based foods boost immunity against acute and chronic disorders

Plant-based foods are becoming an increasingly frequent topic of discussion, both scientific and social, due to the dissemination of information and exchange of experiences in the media. Plant-based diets are considered beneficial for human health due to the supply of many valuable nutrients, including health-promoting compounds. Replacing meat-based foods with plant-based products will provide many valuable compounds, including antioxidants, phenolic compounds, fibers, vitamins, minerals, and some ω3 fatty acids. Due to their high nutritional and functional composition, plant-based foods are beneficial in acute and chronic diseases. This article attempts to review the literature to present the most important data on nutrients of plant-based foods that can then help in the prevention of many diseases, such as different infections, such as coronavirus disease, pneumonia, common cold and flu, asthma, and bacterial diseases, such as bronchitis. A properly structured plant-based diet not only provides the necessary nutrients but also can help in the prevention of many diseases.

Arsenic as hazardous pollutant: Perspectives on engineering remediation tools

Arsenic (As) is highly toxic metal (loid) that impairs plant growth and proves fatal towards human population. It disrupts physiological, biochemical and molecular attributes of plants associated with water/nutrient uptake, redox homeostasis, photosynthetic machineries, cell/membrane damage, and ATP synthesis. Numerous transcription factors are responsive towards As through regulating stress signaling, toxicity and resistance. Additionally, characterization of specific genes encoding uptake, translocation, detoxification and sequestration has also explained their underlying mechanisms. Arsenic within soil enters the food chain and cause As-poisoning. Plethora of conventional methods has been used since decades to plummet As-toxicity, but the success rate is quite low due to environmental hazards. Henceforth, exploration of effective and eco-friendly methods is aimed for As-remediation. With the technological advancements, we have enumerated novel strategies to address this concern for practicing such techniques on global scale. Novel strategies such as bioremediation, phytoremediation, mycorrhizae-mediated remediation, biochar, algal-remediation etc. possess extraordinary results. Moreover, nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule has also been explored in relieving As-stress through reducing oxidative damages and triggering antioxidative responses. Other strategies such as role of plant hormones (salicylic acid, indole-3-acetic acid, jasmonic acid) and micro-nutrients such as selenium have also been elucidated in As-remediation from soil. This has been observed through stimulated antioxidant activities, gene expression of transporters, defense genes, cell-wall modifications along with the synthesis of chelating agents such as phytochelatins and metallothioneins. This review encompasses the updated information about As toxicity and its remediation through novel techniques that serve to be the hallmarks for stress revival. We have summarised the genetic engineering protocols, biotechnological as well as nanotechnological applications in plants to combat As-toxicity.

Speciation of Selenium in Selenium-Enriched Foods by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Herein, a method was established for the speciation of six selenium species by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS/MS). The factors affecting separation were carefully investigated, including ionic strength, pH, and methanol content. Six species of selenium could be completely separated within 20 min, under the mobile phase of 25 mM citric acid in pH = 4.0 containing 2% methanol. The detection limits of selenite (Se(IV)), selenate (Se(VI)), selenomethionine (SeMet), selenocystine (SeCys2), methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys), and selenoethionine (SeEt) were 0.04, 0.02, 0.05, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.15 ng mL−1, respectively. To verify the practicality of this method, the analysis of selenium-enriched foods such as selenium-enriched spring water, selenium-enriched salts, and selenium-enriched tea were conducted, and recovery of 93.7–105% was achieved with RSD < 5%, revealing the high practical utility of the proposed method.

Selenium content and nutritional quality of Brassica chinensis L enhanced by selenium engineered nanomaterials: The role of surface charge

Selenium engineered nanomaterials (Se ENMs)-enabled agriculture has developed rapidly, however, the roles of surface charge in the bioavailability and enrichment efficiency of Se ENMs are still unknown. Herein, various Se ENMs of homogenous size (40-60 nm) and different surface charges (3.2 ± 0.7, -29.0 ± 0.4, and 45.5 ± 1.3 mV) were prepared to explore the Se content and nutritional quality in Brassica chinensis L. The results demonstrated that soil application of various Se ENMs (0.05 mg kg^-1) displayed different bio-availabilities via modulating the secretion of root exudates (e.g., tartaric, malic, and citric acids), microbial community composition (e.g., Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, Paracoccus, Bacillus and Rhizobium) and root cell wall. Negatively charged Se ENMs (Se (-)) showed the highest Se content in the shoot of B. chinensis (3.7-folds). Se (-) also significantly increased yield (156.9%) and improved nutritional quality (e.g., ascorbic acid, amino acids, flavonoids, fatty acids, and tricarboxylic acid) of B. chinensis. Moreover, after harvest, the Se (-) did not lead to significant change in Se residue in soil, but the amount of Se residue in soil was increased by 5.5% after applying the traditional Se fertilizer (selenite). Therefore, this study provides useful information for producing Se-fortified agricultural products, while minimizing environmental risk.

Selenium distribution in cultivated Argosols and Gleyosols of dry and paddy lands: A case study in Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China

Distribution pattern of selenium (Se) fractions in soil could influence Se content in crops and thereby intake of Se in human body. In order to investigate the effects of soil types and farming conditions on Se distribution in small-scaled cultivated land developed under the same conditions of climate, topography and parent materials, two types of soils (i.e., Argosols and Gleyosols) from paddy and dry lands in the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China were selected. Total Se (T-Se) content in Argosols was influenced by organic carbon (Org C) content and pH of bulk topsoil. In Gleyosols, it was mainly affected by Org C content in dry land and pH in paddy land, respectively. In rice root associated topsoil, organic matter associated Se (OM-Se) accounted for 70% of T-Se. Compared with pH (median 6.10) and OM weakly bound Se (OW-Se) (0.14 ± 0.04 mg kg^-1) of Argosols, the higher pH (median 6.77) resulted in less OW-Se (0.10 ± 0.04 mg kg^-1) of Gleyosols. Vertical distribution of Se in borehole cores within the depth of 0-900 cm was mainly affected by the soil type. Se accumulated mainly within 0-150 cm depth (horizon A, E and B) in Argosols and above 40 cm depth (horizon H), existing prominently as OM strongly bound Se (OS-Se), in Gleyosols. Within the depth of 0-150 cm, various Se fractions for both soils were probably controlled by reductive fixation and complexation of Org C; In the alkaline paddy land, DOM-complexed Se was the main composition of A-Se. The findings of this study could help in understanding the mechanisms of Se distribution and enrichment in soils developed under different formation processes and farming conditions.

Wet deposition of atmospheric selenium and sensitivity to emission and precipitation patterns

Wet deposition has been well recognized to be affected by species concentration and precipitation; nevertheless, the regimes in the controlling factor of concentration or precipitation have not yet been clarified. Using a trace element, selenium (Se), with dual effects on human health as a testbed, we first reproduce the spatial distribution of atmospheric Se concentrations and wet deposition fluxes through GEOS-Chem on a global scale, and examine the spatial patterns and relative importance of anthropogenic emissions vs. natural emissions over various regions around the world. We find that over most Northern Hemisphere continental regions, anthropogenic emissions are the dominant source for atmospheric Se concentration and deposition, while it is dominated by natural sources in the other areas. Nested grid simulations covering China and the continental United States are further conducted. The factors (i.e., Se concentration and precipitation) controlling the wet deposition flux of atmospheric Se are analyzed in detail, through the construction of wet deposition-concentration-precipitation (WETD-C-P) diagram for two regions (mainland China and the continental United States) based on the monthly results. The two regions show distinctive features, reflecting the different spatial patterns of Se emissions and precipitation. Both Se emissions and precipitation are higher in the eastern United States than that in the western United States. In contrast, the emissions and precipitation in northern and southern China show dipole features with stronger emissions over the northern side and higher precipitation on the southern side. We further investigate the impacts of future emission changes in China on atmospheric Se deposition and its sensitivity to emissions and precipitation, revealing a modulation of regime shifts, i.e., from the precipitation dominant regime to the concurrent governance of both precipitation and emissions. The proposed WETD-C-P relationship is useful in elucidating the regime and factors governing the spatial and temporal variations in wet deposition.

Voyage of selenium from environment to life: Beneficial or toxic?

Selenium (Se), a naturally occurring metalloid, is an essential micronutrient for life as it is incorporated as selenocysteine in proteins. Although beneficial at low doses, Se is hazardous at high concentrations and poses a serious threat to various ecosystems. Due to this contrasting 'dual' nature, Se has garnered the attention of researchers wishing to unravel its puzzling properties. In this review, we describe the impact of selenium's journey from environment to diverse biological systems, with an emphasis on its chemical advantage. We describe the uneven distribution of Se and how this affects the bioavailability of this element, which, in turn, profoundly affects the habitat of a region. Once taken up, the subsequent incorporation of Se into proteins as selenocysteine and its antioxidant functions are detailed here. The causes of improved protein function due to the incorporation of redox-active Se atom (instead of S) are examined. Subsequently, the reasons for the deleterious effects of Se, which depend on its chemical form (organo-selenium or the inorganic forms) in different organisms are elaborated. Although Se is vital for the function of many antioxidant enzymes, how the pro-oxidant nature of Se can be potentially exploited in different therapies is highlighted. Furthermore, we succinctly explain how the presence of Se in biological systems offsets the toxic effects of heavy metal mercury. Finally, the different avenues of research that are fundamental to expand our understanding of selenium biology are suggested.

Enrichment characteristics and dietary evaluation of selenium in navel orange fruit from the largest navel orange-producing area in China (southern Jiangxi)

Diet is the main intake source of selenium (Se) in the body. Southern Jiangxi is the largest navel orange-producing area in China, and 25.98% of its arable land is Se-rich. However, studies on the Se-rich characteristics and Se dietary evaluation of navel orange fruits in the natural environment of southern Jiangxi have not been reported. This study was large-scale and in situ samplings (n = 492) of navel oranges in southern Jiangxi with the goal of investigating the coupling relationships among Se, nutritional elements, and quality indicators in fruits and systematically evaluating Se dietary nutrition to the body. The results indicated that the average content of total Se in the flesh was 4.92 μg⋅kg^-1, and the percentage of Se-rich navel oranges (total Se ≥ 10 μg⋅kg^-1 in the flesh) was 7.93%, of which 66.74% of the total Se was distributed in the pericarp and 33.26% in the flesh. The average content of total Se in the flesh of Yudu County was the highest at 5.71 μg⋅kg^-1. There was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between Se, Cu, and Zn in the Se-rich flesh. According to the Se content in the flesh, the Se dietary nutrition evaluation was carried out, and it was found that the Se-enriched navel orange provided a stronger Se nutritional potential for the human body. These findings will help to identify Se enrichment in navel orange fruit in China's largest navel orange-producing area and guide the selection of Se-rich soils for navel orange production in the future.

Selenium uptake and accumulation in winter wheat as affected by level of phosphate application and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Selenium (Se) is an advantageous element to crops. However, the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), phosphate (P) and selenite in soil on Se uptake by winter wheat remain elusive. Pot trials were carried out including seven levels of P (0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 or 400 mg kg^-1) and non-mycorrhizal inoculation (NM), inoculation of Funneliformis mosseae (F.m) or Glomus versiforme (G.v). The present results found that grain phosphorus concentration increased with increase of P level from 0 to 100 mg kg^-1 and then tended to plateau, while grain Se concentration decreased with the level of P from 0 to 400 mg kg^-1. Based on mathematical modeling, inoculation of F.m or G.v dramatically improved grain Se concentration by 16.90% or 12.53% under the lower level of P (48.76 mg kg^-1). Furthermore, partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) identified that both up-regulated of the expression of AMF-inducible phosphate transporter and improved Se bioavailability in rhizosphere soil contributed to enhancing plant Se concentration under P levels ≤ 100 mg kg^-1. The present study demonstrated that AMF combined with 48.76 mg kg^-1 P applied in soil can not only achieve high grain yield, but also fully exploit the biological potential of Se uptake in wheat.

Characteristics of Se in water-soil-plant system and threshold of soil Se in seleniferous areas in Enshi, China

Se-enrichment characteristics in water-soil-plant system and dietary Se status of local residents in seleniferous areas were investigated. Results showed that Se in well water might mainly derived from Se-enriched shales and coals, and Se mobility in seleniferous soils was relatively low with less than 6.7% bioavailable forms in high-Se areas. Soil Se with irrigation, precipitation and fertilization sources contributed more to soil Se than Se-enriched shales and coals in low-Se areas, resulting in slightly higher mobility of Se in low-Se soils. Se concentration in edible parts of main crops ranged from 0.005 mg kg^-1 to 4.17 mg kg^-1, and cereal plants had a higher Se-enrichment ability than tuber plants. The probable dietary Se intake (PDI) in high-Se areas was decreased to 959.3 μg d^-1 in recent years, which might be attributed to tap water as drinking water in recent year rather than well water-dependent and changes in dietary structure, but still far above the permissible value of 400 μg d^-1. Reducing cereal-derived dietary Se intake is an important strategy to better Se nutrition status in high-Se areas. After synthesis considerations on soil Se bioavailability and PDI of Se, the soil total Se of 4 mg kg^-1 and the soil available Se content of 0.32 mg kg^-1 were proposed to be the reference threshold values of soil Se excess in high-Se areas in Enshi, respectively.

Selenium Uptake by Lettuce Plants and Se Distribution in Soil Chemical Phases Affected by the Application Rate and the Presence of a Seaweed Extract-Based Biostimulant

To tackle selenium (Se) malnutrition, biofortification is among the proposed strategies. A biostimulant application in soils is thought to support a plant’s growth and productivity. Biofortification with Se(VI) may lead to a leaching hazard due to the high mobility of Se(VI) in the soil environment. In this study, the effect of the application of two Se(VI) rates—5 and 10 mg kg−1 soil—and a biostimulant on the Se uptake by lettuce plants and on the Se(VI) distribution in soil fractions following the plants harvest, was investigated. Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) concentrations in plants were also determined. A high Se(VI) rate suppressed plant growth, leading to a significant fresh weight decrease from 12.28 to 7.55 g and from 14.6 to 2.43 g for the control and high Se(VI) without and with biostimulants, respectively. Impaired plant growth was verified by the SPAD, NDVI and NDRE measurements. The significantly highest Se concentration in plants, 325 mg kg−1, was recorded for the high Se(VI) rate in the presence of the biostimulant. Compared to controls, the low Se(VI) rate significantly decreased P and increased the S concentrations in plants. The post-harvest soil fractionation revealed that, in the presence of the biostimulant, the Se(VI) soluble fraction increased from 0.992 to 1.3 mg kg−1 at a low Se(VI) rate, and decreased from 3.T85 to 3.13 mg kg−1 at a high Se(VI) rate. Nevertheless, at a low Se(VI) rate, 3.6 and 3.1 mg kg−1 of the added Se(VI) remained in the soil in less mobile forms, in the presence or absence of the biostimulant, respectively. This study indicated that the exogenous application of Se in soil exerted dual effects on lettuce growth and Se availability, depending on the level of selenate applied.

Transcriptome analysis provides new insight into the distribution and transport of selenium and its associated metals in selenium-rich rice

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans and obtained from diary diets. The consumption of selenium-rich agricultural food is an efficient way to obtain selenium, but the quality and safety of selenium-rich agro-food are always affected by their associated heavy metals, even poses a potential threaten to human health. In this research, a sampling survey of heavy metals contents in selenium-rich rice was conducted, 182 sets of selenium-rich rice samples were collected from five selenium-rich rice-producing areas of China, and the accumulation of selenium and cadmium were found to be associated in rice and soil. Subsequently, a pot experiment was performed in the greenhouse via treating the soil samples with 12 different concentrations of selenium and heavy metals, and the contents of selenium and cadmium in rice grain were confirmed to be significantly associated. Moreover, transcriptome analysis revealed that the up-regulation of transporter-coding may promote the absorption of selenium and cadmium. The expression of antioxidant-coding genes and cadmium chelator transporter coding-genes was up-regulated to reduce the toxicity of cadmium. Meanwhile, the up-regulation of key genes of the ascorbic acid-glutathione metabolic pathway were responsible for the association between selenium and cadmium in Se-rich rice. Our work suggested the correlation between selenium and cadmium accumulation in selenium-rich rice, clarified their accumulation mechanism, provides a direction for the scientific production of selenium-rich agro-foods.

Assessment of cadmium and lead tolerance potential of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) and its implications for phytoremediation and human health

Soil contamination with Cd and Pb is a worldwide problem which not only degrades the environment but also poses a serious threat for human and animal health. Phytoremediation of these contaminated soils using halophytic plants like quinoa presents an opportunity to clean the soils and use them for crop production. The current experiment was performed to evaluate the Cd and Pb tolerance potential of quinoa and subsequently its implications for human health. Three weeks old quinoa seedlings were exposed to Cd (30, 60 and 90 mg kg^-1) and Pb (50, 100 and 150 mg kg^-1) levels along with a control. The results revealed that plant height decreased at highest levels of soil Cd and Pb. Shoot, root and seed dry weight decreased with increasing levels of soil Cd and Pb. Tissue Cd and Pb concentrations increased with increasing levels of Cd and Pb in soil, the highest Cd was found in roots while the lowest in seeds. The highest Pb concentration was found in shoots at low Pb level, while in roots at high level of Pb. Increasing levels of Cd and Pb stimulated the activities of measured antioxidant enzymes and decreased membrane stability index. The health risk assessments of Cd and Pb revealed that hazard quotient was < 1 for both the metals. However, the results of total hazard quotient showed that value was < 1 for Pb and 1.19 for Cd showing potential carcinogenicity. This study demonstrates that quinoa has good phytoremediation potential for Cd and Pb however, the risk of Cd toxicity is challenging for human health.

Treatment technologies for selenium contaminated water: A critical review

Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Enhanced phytoremediation of selenium using genetically engineered rice plants

Selenium (Se) is a micronutrient essential for human and animal health. However, Se is toxic at high levels because the nonspecific substitution of cysteine by selenocysteine could lead to protein malfunction. In an attempt to prevent nonspecific selenocysteine incorporation into proteins, we simultaneously overexpressed the gene encoding selenocysteine lyase from Homo sapiens (HsSL), which specifically catalyzes the decomposition of selenocysteine into elemental Se⁰ and alanine, and the gene encoding selenocysteine methyltransferase from Astragalus bisulcatus (AbSMT), which methylates selenocysteine into methylselenocysteine in rice. The transgenic plants showed normal growth under standard conditions. Se treatment resulted in higher levels of alanine and methylselenocysteine in transgenic plants than in wild-type plants, which indicated that this approach might have successfully redirected Se flow in the plant. Overexpression of HsSL and AbSMT in rice also endows transgenic plants with hyposensitivity to Se stress at the seed germination stage. The transgenic plants showed enhanced selenate and selenite tolerance, which was simultaneously supported by fresh weight values. Moreover, our phytoremediation assay revealed that the transgenic plants exhibited greatly improved Se elimination capabilities and accumulated about 38.5% and 128.6% more Se than wild-type plants when treated with selenate and selenite, respectively. This study offers hope that genetically modified plants could play a role in the restoration of Se-contaminated environment.

Selenium in Brazil nuts: An overview of agronomical aspects, recent trends in analytical chemistry, and health outcomes

Se is an essential element in mammals. We review how its bioavailability in soil and the ability of plants to accumulate Se in foods depends on the soil Se profile (including levels and formats), besides to describe how the various selenoproteins have important biochemical functions in the body and directly impact human health. Owing to its favorable characteristics, the scientific community has investigated selenomethionine in most nut matrices. Among nuts, Brazil nuts have been highlighted as one of the richest sources of bioavailable Se. We summarize the most commonly used analytical methods for Se species and total Se determination in nuts. We also discuss the chemical forms of Se metabolized by mammals, human biochemistry and health outcomes from daily dietary intake of Se from Brazil nuts. These findings may facilitate the understanding of the importance of adequate dietary Se intake and enable researchers to define methods to determine Se species.

The influence of sea animals on selenium distribution in tundra soils and lake sediments in maritime Antarctica

The biogeochemical behavior of selenium (Se) has been extensively studied in Se-enriched or Se contaminated soils at low and middle latitudes. However, the Se distribution patterns have not been studied in tundra ecosystems of remote Antarctica. Here, the soils/sediments were collected from penguin and seal colonies, their adjacent tundra and lakes, tundra marsh, human-activity areas, normal tundra and the periglacial in maritime Antarctica, and total Se and seven operationally defined Se fractions were analyzed. Overall the regional distribution of Se levels showed high spatial heterogeneity (coefficient of variation, CV = 114%) in tundra soils, with the highest levels in penguin (mean 6.12 ± 2.66 μg g^-1) and seal (mean 2.29 ± 1.43 μg g^-1) colony soils, and the lowest in normal tundra soils and periglacial sediments (<0.5 μg g^-1). The contribution rates of penguins and seals to tundra soil Se levels amounted to 91.7% and 78.0%. The lake sediment Se levels (mean 2.15 ± 0.87 μg g^-1) close to penguin colonies were one order of magnitude higher than those (mean 0.49 ± 0.87 μg g^-1) around normal tundra. Strong positive correlations (p < 0.01) of Se concentrations between lake sediments and adjacent tundra soils, and lower Se: P (<0.001) and S: P (<1) ratios in the lake sediments close to penguin colonies, indicated the infiltration or leaching of penguin guano as the predominant Se source in lake sediment. The Se species in penguin and seal guano were dominated by SeCys₂ (76.6%) and SeMet (73.5%), respectively. The evidence from the predominant proportions of total organic matter-bound Se (Se_om, 67%-70% of total Se) in penguin or seal colony soils further supported penguin or seal guano had a great influence on the distribution patterns of Se fractions in the tundra. This study confirmed that sea animal activities transported substantial amount Se from ocean to land, and significantly altered the biogeochemical cycle of Se in maritime Antarctica.

Influence of tree species on selenium and iodine partitioning in an experimental forest ecosystem

Storage of selenium and iodine can greatly vary between forest ecosystems, but the influence of tree species on partitioning and recycling of those elements remains elusive. In this study, contents of Se and I were measured in tree compartments, litterfall, humus, and soil horizons in monospecific stands of Douglas fir, pine, spruce, beech, and oak under identical climatic and edaphic conditions. The cycle of each element was characterized in terms of stocks and fluxes. Lowest concentrations were in wood (Se: 8-13 μg kg^-1; I: <16.5 μg kg^-1). Senescing organs had higher Se and I content, than the living parts of trees due to direct exposure to atmospheric deposition, with some variation between coniferous and deciduous trees. For all stands, low amounts of Se and I were involved in biological cycle as reflected by low root uptake. In humus, the enrichment of elements greatly increased with the stage of organic matter (OM) degradation with average factors of 10 and 20 for Se and I. OM degradation and element persistence in humus was influenced by tree species. Deciduous trees, with low biomass, and fast degradation of OM stored less Se and I in humus compared to fir and spruce with high humus biomass. Interestingly, tree species did not affect soil reserves of Se and I. Concentration ranges were 331-690 μg Se kg^-1 and 4.3-14.5 mg I kg^-1. However, the divergent vertical profiles of the elements in the soil column indicated greater mobility of I. Selenium concentrations regularly decreased with depth in correlation with OM and Fe oxides content. For iodine, the maximum iodine concentration at a soil depth of 15 to 35 cm was caused by a parallel precipitation/sorption behavior of aluminium and organic iodine dissolved in the topsoil.
