Abstract
Microbial contamination of medical devices and treatment rooms leads to several detrimental hospital and device-associated infections. Antimicrobial copper coatings are a new approach to control healthcare-associated infections (HAI’s). This review paper focuses on the efficient methods for depositing highly adherent copper-based antimicrobial coatings onto a variety of metal surfaces. Antimicrobial properties of the copper coatings produced by various deposition methods including thermal spray technique, electrodeposition, electroless plating, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and sputtering techniques are compared. The coating produced using different processes did not produce similar properties. Also, process parameters often could be varied for any given coating process to impart a change in structure, topography, wettability, hardness, surface roughness, and adhesion strength. In turn, all of them affect antimicrobial activity. Fundamental concepts of the coating process are described in detail by highlighting the influence of process parameters to increase antimicrobial activity. The strategies for developing antimicrobial surfaces could help in understanding the mechanism of killing the microbes.

Abstract
Protein-based conductive materials are gaining attention as alternative components of electronic devices for value-added applications. In this regard, soy protein isolate (SPI) was processed by extrusion in order to obtain SPI pellets, subsequently molded into SPI films by hot pressing, resulting in homogeneous and transparent films, as shown by scanning electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy analyses, respectively. During processing, SPI denatured and refolded through intermolecular interactions with glycerol, causing a major exposition of tryptophan residues and fluorescence emission, affecting charge distribution and electron transport properties. Regarding electrical conductivity, the value found (9.889 × 10−4 S/m) is characteristic of electrical semiconductors, such as silicon, and higher than that found for other natural polymers. Additionally, the behavior of the films in contact with water was analyzed, indicating a controlled swelling and a hydrolytic surface, which is of great relevance for cell adhesion and spreading. In fact, cytotoxicity studies showed that the developed SPI films were biocompatible, according to the guidelines for the biological evaluation of medical devices. Therefore, these SPI films are uniquely suited as bioelectronics because they conduct both ionic and electronic currents, which is not accessible for the traditional metallic conductors.

Abstract
In recent decades, environmental concerns and increasing consumer demand for healthy and nutritious food products with prolonged shelf life have made the food packaging industry pay more attention to the preparation of multifunctional biodegradable packaging films based on biopolymers containing active components such as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents. In this study, bio-nanocomposite films were fabricated from gelatin (G) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and different concentrations of zinc oxide (ZnO) and/or Selenium (Se) nanoparticles (NPs) by the casting method. The mechanical, barrier, optical, and structural (FTIR, XRD, and SEM) properties of the films were investigated along with their antibacterial and antioxidant features. The incorporation of ZnO and Se NPs improved the physicomechanical and water resistance of G/CNF films. In this regard, the maximum tensile strength value was obtained for the G/CNF containing 5% w/w ZnO NPs (G/CNF/ZnO3) and G/CNF containing 0.1% w/w Se NPs (G/CNF/Se2) films (~2.20-fold and ~2.13-fold higher than the G/CNF film, respectively). Also, G/CNF with 3% w/w ZnO NPs (G/CNF/ZnO2) film had the lowest water vapor permeability and water solubility among all films. Results of the disc diffusion assay showed a stronger antibacterial effect of ZnO NPs compared with Se NPs. The bacterial susceptibility to the antibacterial films was as follows: Listeria monocytogenes > Escherichia coli > Staphylococcus aureus > Pseudomonas fluorescens. The G/CNF films incorporated with Se nanoparticles possessed the higher property of scavenging free radicals in comparison films containing ZnO nanoparticles. Also, the combination of Se NPs and ZnO NPs enhanced the antioxidant effect of the films. In conclusion, gelatin-based edible films containing CNFs, ZnO NPs, and Se NPs can be used in the development of active food packaging products.

Abstract
A chitosan-based nanocomposite film with tannic acid (TA) as a cross-linker and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) as a reinforcing agent was developed with a solution casting technique. TA and TiO2 are biocompatible with chitosan, and this paper studied the synergistic effect of the cross-linker and the reinforcing agent. The addition of TA enhanced the ultraviolet blocking and mechanical properties of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film. The reinforcement of TiO2 in chitosan/TA further improved the nanocomposite film's mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan or chitosan/TA film. The thermal stability of the chitosan-based nanocomposite film was slightly enhanced, whereas the swelling ratio decreased. Interestingly, its water vapor barrier property was also significantly increased. The developed chitosan-based nanocomposite film showed potent antioxidant activity, and it is promising for active food packaging.

Abstract
In the present work cassava starch/agar Ag and ZnO nanocomposite films were prepared by the solution casting method. The structural, physical and antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposite films were studied as a function of the concentration of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles. The results of the thermogravimetric analysis showed 8-15% degradation of both the nanocomposite films at 150°C endorsing the thermal stability of the films. Scanning electron microscopic analysis reveals the uniform blending of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles with a starch/agar matrix with tiny waves like appearance on the surface. The incorporation of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles in the film was found to reduce the moisture content, water solubility and water vapour permeability with increase in the concentration of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles. The growth kinetics study of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of Ag and ZnO blended nanocomposite films showed promising results especially against Gram-negative P. aeruginosa. Thus, the film synthesised in the present study bears the potential to be used as active packaging material to prevent food from bacterial contamination and spoilage.

Abstract
The prompt treatment of burn wounds is essential but can be challenging in remote parts of Africa, where burns from open fires are a constant hazard for children and suitable medical care may be far away. Consequently, there is an unmet need for an economical burn wound dressing with a sustained antimicrobial activity that might be manufactured locally at low cost. This study describes and characterizes the novel preparation of a silver nitrate-loaded/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film. Using controlled heating cycles, films may be crosslinked with in situ silver nanoparticle production using only a low heat oven and little technical expertise. Our research demonstrated that heat-curing of PVA/silver nitrate films converted the silver to nanoparticles. These films swelled in water to form a robust, wound-compatible hydrogel which exhibited controlled release of the antibacterial silver nanoparticles. An optimal formulation was obtained using 5% (w/w) silver nitrate in PVA membrane films that had been heated at 140 °C for 90 min. Physical and chemical characterization of such films was complemented by in vitro studies that confirmed the effective antibacterial activity of the released silver nanoparticles against both gram positive and negative bacteria. Overall, these findings provide economical and simple methods to manufacture stable, hydrogel forming wound dressings that release antibiotic silver over prolonged periods suitable for emergency use in remote locations.

Abstract
In this work, the modification of agar is presented with the synergistic effect of bacterial cellulose reinforcement and succinic acid crosslinked agar. The effect of crosslinking agar with succinic acid on tensile strength and water absorption were studied. Crosslinking was confirmed with Fourier infrared spectroscopy. The tensile strength of agar was increased by 70% by succinic acid crosslinking (from55 ± 9.97 MPa to 93.40 ± 9.97 MPa) and the crosslinked agar absorbed only 18.66% water compared to uncrosslinked agar. The tensile strength of agar was increased by 56% by bacterial cellulose reinforcement (55 ± 9.97 MPa to 86.30 ± 14.70 MPa). The strength of agar was improved by 101% by the synergistic effect of bacterial cellulose reinforcement and succinic acid crosslinking (55 ± 9.97 MPa to 111 ± 12.30 MPa). Cytocompatibility studies of the developed films suggested that the crosslinked samples can also have potential applications in biomedical engineering apart from packaging applications.

Abstract
Aquatic products are extremely perishable due to their biological composition. Conventional preservation methods such as freezing, chemical treatments, packaging, and so forth are unable to inhibit enzymatic and microbiological spoilage efficiently and/or energy intensive and/or potentially toxic. However, the demand of consumers for aquatic products with long shelf life and high quality has urged the food industries to pursuit highly effective preservation methods for shelf life extension of aquatic products. Nanotechnology-related shelf life prolongation process possess the ability to overcome the drawbacks of conventional preservation technologies due to its unique properties. In this article, the aquatic products spoilage mechanisms, recent application of nanotechnology-related preservation techniques for aquatic products as well as the risk and regulation of nanomaterials have been reviewed. It has been shown that nanotechnology-related preservation techniques can effectively extend the shelf life without impairing the quality of aquatic products. However, the safety of nanotechnology is still remained controversial, therefore, the application of nanotechnology should be considered cautiously.

Abstract
Antibacterial sugar palm starch biopolymer composite films were developed and derived from renewable sources and inorganic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as main ingredients for antibacterial coatings. The composite films were produced by solution casting method and the mechanical and physicochemical properties were determined by tensile test, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), antibacterial screening test and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images. It was found that mechanical and antibacterial properties of biocomposite films were improved after the addition of AgNPs compared with the film without active metals. The weakness of neat biocomposite films was improved by incorporating inorganic AgNPs as a nanofiller in the films' matrix to avoid bacterial growth. The results showed that the tensile strength ranged between 8 kPa and 408 kPa and the elasticity modulus was between 5.72 kPa and 9.86 kPa. The addition of AgNPs in FTIR analysis decreased the transmittance value, caused small changes in the chemical structure, caused small differences in the intensity peaks, and produced longer wavelengths. These active films increased the degradation weight and decomposition temperature due to the more heat-stable AgNPs. Meanwhile, the average inhibited areas measured were between 7.66 and 7.83 mm (Escherichia coli), 7.5 and 8.0 mm (Salmonella cholerasuis), and 0.1 and 0.5 mm for Staphylococcus aureus. From the microscopic analysis, it was observed that the average size of all microbes for 1 wt% and 4 wt% AgNPs ranged from 0.57 to 2.90 mm. Overall, 3 wt% AgNP nanofiller was found to be the best composition that fulfilled all the mechanical properties and had better antimicrobial properties. Thus, the development of an organic-inorganic hybrid of antibacterial biopolymer composite films is suitable for antibacterial coatings.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNP L) synthesis using the active compounds of lemon juice was optimized. The obtained nanoparticles were included in starch-based film formulations, studying the relevant properties that condition their application in the packaging area. The optimized conditions for AgNP L' synthesis were 30 min at 90 °C, which led to the lowest nanoparticle size (5.5 nm) with the highest associated stability (ζ= -29.5 mV) up to 90 days. Nanocomposite films resulted with an orange tone that increased with AgNP L concentration (14.3-143 ppm). Water vapor permeability decreased while tensile mechanical resistance increased up to an aggregate of 71.5 ppm of AgNP L, indicating the nanoparticles' reinforcement of the polymer matrix. Besides, the citric acid content provided by lemon juice also affected the starch-based relevant film properties. Regarding antimicrobial capacity, a synergic effect between active compounds of lemon juice and silver nanoparticles was evidenced, being Salmonella spp. the most sensitive bacteria.

Abstract
Agar is a biopolymer extracted from certain red algae. The continuous and transparent film made from agar gum is becoming a common and renewable alternative for plastic-based food packaging materials. However, plain agar film suffers from brittleness, high moisture permeability, and poor thermal stability. Considerable researches have been devoted to improving the properties of agar films to extend their applications. These include reinforcements by nanomaterials, blending with other biopolymers, and incorporating plasticizers, hydrophobic components, or antimicrobial agents into their structure. This article comprehensively reviews the functional properties and defects of edible films made from agar gum. Also, it describes various strategies and components used to make an agar film with desirable properties. Moreover, the applications of agar-based edible films with improved functionality for food packaging are discussed.

Abstract
Thymol and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were used to develop poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based films with antioxidant and antibacterial performance. Different amounts of thymol (6 and 8 wt%) and 1 wt% Ag-NPs were added to PLA to produce the active films. Ag-NPs and thymol were successfully identified in the nanocomposite structures using spectroscopic techniques. A kinetic study was performed to evaluate the release of thymol and Ag-NPs from the nanocomposites to an aqueous food simulant (ethanol 10%, v/v) at 40 °C. The diffusion of thymol from the polymer matrix was affected by the presence of non-migrating Ag-NPs, which showed non-Fickian release behavior. The ternary system including 1 wt% Ag-NPs and 8 wt% thymol showed clear antibacterial performance by reducing the cell viability of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by around 40% after 3 and 24 h of storage at 4, 25, and 37 °C compared to neat PLA. Significant antioxidant behavior of all active films was also confirmed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The obtained nanocomposite films based on PLA and the addition of Ag-NPs and thymol were proven to have combined antioxidant and antibacterial performance, with controlled release of thymol. These formulations have potential applications in the development of innovative and customized active packaging systems to increase the shelf-life of food products.

Abstract
The active multilayer packaging films were formed from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyamide containing a 2% antimicrobial agent in one of the LDPE sides of the film (LDPE/polyamide/LDPE-2% antimicrobial agent). The antimicrobial agents used were potassium sorbate (PS-film), nisin (N-film), or chitosan (CTS-film). The effects of antimicrobial incorporation on water vapor permeability (P), diffusivity (D eff ), and solubility (S o and S H ) of the active and control films (LDPE/polyamide/LDPE) were investigated. A dynamic vapor sorption analyzer (DVS) was used to estimate the sorption isotherms of the films at 25 °C. Peleg was found to be the best equation to describe sorption behaviors. The addition of PS and nisin into the film matrix resulted in a lower P than that of the control film. The D eff values of the active films were lower than those of control films, except for the CTS-film. The high water-holding capacity of PS and nisin might limit the D eff of the respective films. It was found that Henry's law was applicable to relate P, D eff , and S o and S H values of the multilayer film [correlation coefficient (r) = 0.909-0.971]. The mechanical and thermal properties of the active films were not significantly affected by the incorporation of PS and nisin (p > 0.05). However, the impact of stress and elongation (transverse direction) on the CTS-film was lower than on other films, which indicated that chitosan improved the mechanical properties of the film.

Abstract
Packaging is an integral part of food products, allowing the preservation of their quality. It plays an important role, protecting the packed product from external conditions, maintaining food quality, and improving properties of the packaged food during storage. Nevertheless, commonly used packaging based on synthetic non-biodegradable polymers causes serious environmental pollution. Consequently, numerous recent studies have focused on the development of biodegradable packaging materials based on biopolymers. In addition, biopolymers may be classified as active packaging materials, since they have the ability to carry different active substances. This review presents the latest updates on the use of silver nanoparticles in packaging materials based on biopolymers. Silver nanoparticles have become an interesting component of biodegradable biopolymers, mainly due to their antimicrobial properties that allow the development of active food packaging materials to prolong the shelf life of food products. Furthermore, incorporation of silver nanoparticles into biopolymers may lead to the development of materials with improved physical-mechanical properties.

Abstract
Antimicrobial materials are widely used for inhibition of microorganisms in the environment. It has been established that bacterial growth can be restrained by silver nanoparticles. Combining these with other antimicrobial agents, such as ZnO, may increase the antimicrobial activity and the use of carrier substrate makes the material easier to handle. In the paper, we present an antimicrobial nanocomposite based on silver nanoparticles nucleated in general silicate nanostructure ZnO·mSiO2. First, we prepared the silicate fine net nanostructure ZnO·mSiO2 with zinc content up to 30 wt% by precipitation of sodium water glass in zinc acetate solution. Silver nanoparticles were then formed within the material by photoreduction of AgNO3 on photoactive ZnO. This resulted into an Ag-ZnO·mSiO2 composite with silica gel-like morphology and the specific surface area of 250 m2/g. The composite, alongside with pure AgNO3 and clear ZnO·mSiO2, were successfully tested for antimicrobial activity on both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains and yeast Candida albicans. With respect to the silver content, the minimal inhibition concentration of Ag-ZnO·mSiO2 was worse than AgNO3 only for gram-negative strains. Moreover, we found a positive synergistic antimicrobial effect between Ag and Zn agents. These properties create an efficient and easily applicable antimicrobial material in the form of powder.

Abstract
The antibacterial ability of in situ prepared nanometer-sized silver particles, immobilized in agar-agar films, was studied as a function of the concentration of co-dopant, magnesium ions. Content of inorganic components in hybrid films was determined using inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy, and found to be low (<2 wt.-%). Morphology of prepared hybrid films, studied by transmission electron microscopy, revealed the presence of non-agglomerated and randomly distributed 10-20 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the agar-agar matrices. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the distinct chemical interaction between Ag NPs and polymer chains. Thermogravimetric analysis, as well as the determination of tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break showed improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties of agar-agar matrices upon the incorporation of Ag NPs due to high compatibility between the hydrophilic organic component and inorganic components. The complete microbial reduction of Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureuswas observed for all agar-silver films, while satisfactory results were observed for Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa (≥99.6%). The release of Ag+ ions is suppressed by the increase of the concentration of Mg2+ ions and it was found to be significantly smaller (≤0.24 ppm) than the harmful ecological level (1 ppm).

Abstract
The inclusion of nanotechnologies in aquaculture and seafood preservation confronts a new edge that deserves attention in the recent trends of global food sector. Nanotechnology, being a novel and innovative approach has paved way to open up new perspective for the analysis of biomolecules, targeted drug delivery, protein or cells, clinical diagnosis, development of non-viral vectors for gene therapy, as transport vehicle for DNA, disease therapeutics etc. The current and potential use of nanotechnology would show the way to progression of smart and high performing fish. The comparative evaluation of extremely sophisticated nanotechnology with conventional process engineering proposes new prospectus in technological developments for superior water and wastewater technology processes. Nanoparticles have comprehensive advantages for management of drugs as liberation of vaccines and therefore hold the assurance for civilized protection of farmed fish against disease-causing pathogens. This review article explores the present concerns of food security, climate change as well as sustainability that are explored by the researchers in the area of nanotechnology, development of marine produce, along with its preservation and aquaculture.

Abstract
Soft electrodes have been known as a key component in the engineering of flexible, wearable, and implantable energy-saving or powering devices. As environmental issues are emerging, the increase of electronic wastes due to the short replacement cycle of electronic products has become problematic. To address this issue, development of eco-friendly and recyclable materials is important, but has not yet been fully investigated. In this study, we demonstrated hydrogel-based electrode materials composed of agarose and spherical activated carbon (agar/SAC) that are easy to shape and recycle. Versatile engineering processes were applied thanks to the reversible gelation of the agarose matrix which enables the design of soft electrodes into various shapes such as thin films with structural hierarchy, microfibers, and even three-dimensional structures. The reversible sol–gel transition characteristics of the agar matrix enables the retrieval of materials and subsequent re-configuration into different shapes and structures. The electrical properties of the agar/SAC composite gels were controlled by gel compositions and ionic strength in the gel matrix. Finally, the composite gel was cut and re-contacted, forming conformal contact to show immediate restoration of the conductivity.

Abstract
This work reports the production and characterization of biodegradable and eco-friendly films based on cashew gum polysaccharide (CGP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), using the statistical design strategy. Results show that CGP/PVA films are pH stimuli-responsive, allowing their use in a magnitude of biotechnological applications. The morphological and dimensional characterization evidences a positive influence of polymers in the dimensional properties. In addition, the microstructural analysis shows that films have different morphologies depending on the content of polymers and oxidant agent. On the other hand, the thickness and light transmission values are positively influenced by CGP and PVA and negatively influenced by NaIO₄. Results from mechanical properties show that the traction force is positively influenced by NaIO₄, while the elongation is only affected by the PVA concentration. In summary, considering the morphological, optical and mechanical properties of the CGP/PVA films it is possible to suggest their utilization in different fields as promising packaging materials or matrices for immobilization and/or encapsulation of biomolecules.
