Abstract
BACKGROUND Garlic (Allium sativum) has been shown to have important benefits in individuals at high cardiovascular risk. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the administration of aged garlic extract (AGE) on the risk factors that constitute the cluster of metabolic syndrome (MS). METHODS AND DESIGN Double-blind, crossover, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the effect of 1.2 g/day of AGE (Kyolic), for 24 weeks of treatment (12 weeks of AGE and 12 weeks of placebo), on subjects with MS. RESULTS The administration of AGE increased the plasma levels of adiponectin (P = 0.027). No serious side effects associated with the intervention were reported. CONCLUSION The present results have shown for the first time that the administration of AGE for 12 weeks increased plasma adiponectin levels in patients with MS. This suggests that AGE might be a useful, novel, nonpharmacological therapeutic intervention to increase adiponectin and to prevent cardiovascular (CV) complications in individuals with MS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess different factors influencing adiponectinemia in obese and normal-weight women; to identify factors associated with the variation (Δ) in adiponectinemia in obese women following a 6-month weight loss program, according to surgical/non-surgical interventions. METHODS We studied 100 normal-weight women and 112 obese premenopausal women; none of them was on any medical treatment. Women were characterized for anthropometrics, daily macronutrient intake, smoking status, contraceptives use, adiponectin as well as IL-6 and TNF-α serum concentrations. RESULTS Adiponectinemia was lower in obese women (p < 0.001), revealing an inverse association with waist-to-hip ratio (p < 0.001; r = -0.335). Normal-weight women presented lower adiponectinemia among smokers (p = 0.041); body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, TNF-α levels, carbohydrate intake, and smoking all influence adiponectinemia (r(2) = 0.436). After weight loss interventions, a significant modification in macronutrient intake occurs followed by anthropometrics decrease (chiefly after bariatric procedures) and adiponectinemia increase (similar after surgical and non-surgical interventions). After bariatric intervention, Δ adiponectinemia was inversely correlated to Δ waist circumference and Δ carbohydrate intake (r(2) = 0.706). CONCLUSION Anthropometrics, diet, smoking, and TNF-α levels all influence adiponectinemia in normal-weight women, although explaining less than 50% of it. In obese women, anthropometrics modestly explain adiponectinemia. Opposite to non-surgical interventions, after bariatric surgery adiponectinemia increase is largely explained by diet composition and anthropometric changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arterial stiffness and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) constitute validated cardiovascular prognostic markers. Adiponectin and its receptors 1 (AdipoR1) and 2 (AdipoR2) are involved in coronary artery disease (CAD). We investigated whether AdipoR1 and R2 mRNA and protein expression are associated with arterial stiffness, IMT and extent of coronary atherosclerosis. METHODS We studied 71 patients (61 men, 10 women) with angiographically proven CAD. We measured: (i) monocyte expression of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 mRNA (quantitative real-time PCR) and protein expression (flow cytometry) (iii) adiponectin, metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and C-reactive protein (CRP) blood levels, (iv) carotid-femoral artery pulse wave velocity (PWV) and carotid IMT. RESULTS Patients with multi-vessel CAD had higher AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 mRNA than those with single-vessel (P < 0.05). PWV was associated with AdipoR1 mRNA (r = 0.474), AdipoR1 protein (r = 0.228), AdipoR2 mRNA (r = 0.716), AdipoR2-protein (r = 0.261), adiponectin (r = 0.236), and MMP-9 (r = 0.350) (P < 0.05, for all correlations). After adjustment for age, sex, waist-hip ratio, and mean blood pressure both AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 mRNA remained independent determinants of PWV (R(2) = 0.35 and R(2) = 0.57, P < 0.05). IMT was also associated with AdipoR2 mRNA, AdipoR2 protein, and MMP-9 (P < 0.05). Increased expression of ADR2 mRNA significantly related to MMP-9 (r = 0.210), and CRP (r = 0.531) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Increased mRNA and protein expression of adiponectin receptors is related with increased aortic stiffness, coronary and peripheral atherosclerosis in patients with CAD. The interrelation of AdipoR2 with inflammatory markers, PWV and IMT suggests a compensatory increase of these receptors to counteract the excess inflammatory and atherogenic process in CAD. Abstract
UNLABELLED Fat cells or adipocytes are distributed ubiquitously throughout the body and are often regarded purely as energy stores. However, recently it has become clear that these adipocytes are engine rooms producing large numbers of metabolically active substances with both endocrine and paracrine actions. White adipocytes surround almost every blood vessel in the human body and are collectively termed perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). It is now well recognized that PVAT not only provides mechanical support for any blood vessels it invests, but also secretes vasoactive and metabolically essential cytokines known as adipokines, which regulate vascular function. The emergence of obesity as a major challenge to our healthcare systems has contributed to the growing interest in adipocyte dysfunction with a view to discovering new pharmacotherapeutic agents to help rescue compromised PVAT function. Very few PVAT studies have been carried out on human tissue. This review will discuss these and the hypotheses generated from such research, as well as highlight the most significant and clinically relevant animal studies showing the most pharmacological promise. Abstract
AIMS The present study investigated alteration of abdominal visceral fat mass (VFM) and its relationship to adipokines and insulin resistance (IR) in obese and non-obese type 2 diabetes and normoglycemic subjects. METHODS Twenty-two diabetic patients and 37 normoglycemic controls were subgrouped into obese and non-obese according to their BMI. VFM was quantified by computed tomography. Plasma adiponectin and resistin, two adipokines exert contrary effects on insulin sensitivity were measured. Insulin sensitivity was evaluated by an established HOMA model. RESULTS Obese subjects showed remarkably expanded VFM, while non-obese diabetes obtained more abundant VFM than non-obese controls (104 ± 50 cm(2)vs. 77 ± 26 cm(2), P<0.05). Plasma adiponectin was only significantly decreased in obese diabetes. Plasma resistin was increased in diabetes, but compared between obese and non-obese subjects. Diabetic patients and obese controls were significantly insulin resistant. HOMA-IR index positively correlated to VFM in both groups (r=0.563, P=0.011 for diabetes and r=0.671, P=0.000 for controls). In diabetes but not controls, plasma adiponectin negatively related to VFM (r=-0.687, P=0.000) and HOMA-IR index (r=-0.659, P=0.002), while resistin had no relation to IR and VFM in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Increased VFM may lead to IR by mechanisms beyond adipokines in Chinese type 2 diabetic and normoglycemic subjects.

Abstract
We used a ProteoChip coated with a calixcrown derivative protein linker to measure adiponectin and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels and compared the results with commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Adiponectin and MCP-1 levels in normal human serum and RAW264 cell supernatants, respectively, were measured. The ProteoChip quantification results correlated with those from the ELISA kits; however, the ProteoChip required less sample volume, exhibited higher sensitivity, and had a wider detection range. The ProteoChip was capable of detecting and quantifying small amounts of protein, possibly replacing ELISA kits in evaluating the levels of adiponectin and MCP-1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is an adipocyte-secreted hormone proposed to link obesity with insulin resistance. However, the role of RBP4 in cardiovascular complications is yet to be fully understood. The present study is aimed to decipher the association between RBP4 with pro-inflammatory cytokines and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in diet-induced obese and hyperlipidaemic mice. To understand the correlation, rimonabant, an anti-obesity drug, has been used to relieve the atherosclerotic predisposition. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Adipose and/or aortic tissue expressions of RBP4, pro-inflammatory cytokine genes and circulating LDL levels were measured in high fat (HF)-fed female C57BL/6 and high cholesterol (HC)-fed apolipoprotein E3 (ApoE3) Leiden mice. KEY RESULTS Mice fed a HF diet had a significantly increased adipose expression of RBP4, TNF-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) and down-regulated adiponectin mRNA levels. A significant increase in aortic RBP4 and MCP-1 expression and circulating levels of LDL and C-reactive protein (CRP) was found in the ApoE3 mice fed a HC diet. Interestingly, rimonabant treatment lowered the elevated aortic RBP4, MCP-1 expressions and significantly reduced the serum levels of LDL, CRP, RBP4 and MCP-1. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Our results indicate that RBP4 is positively associated with markers of inflammation in obese and pro-atherogenic conditions and could play a role in a predisposition to atherosclerosis. Furthermore, our results indicate that rimonabant may improve vascular function by modulating RBP4 along with pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
eNOS activation resulting in mitochondrial biogenesis is believed to play a central role in life span extension promoted by calorie restriction (CR). We investigated the mechanism of this activation by treating vascular cells with serum from CR rats and found increased Akt and eNOS phosphorylation, in addition to enhanced nitrite release. Inhibiting Akt phosphorylation or immunoprecipitating adiponectin (found in high quantities in CR serum) completely prevented the increment in nitrite release and eNOS activation. Overall, we demonstrate that adiponectin in the serum from CR animals increases NO• signaling by activating the insulin pathway. These results suggest this hormone may be a determinant regulator of the beneficial effects of CR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Omega-3 fatty acids and fenofibrate are both used to treat patients with hypertriglyceridemia. However, a head-to-head comparison of the lipoprotein and metabolic effects of these two medicines has not been published. METHODS This was a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study. Age, sex, and body mass index were matched among groups. All patients were recommended to maintain a low fat diet. Fifty patients in each group were given placebo, omega-3 fatty acids 2 g (most commonly used dosage in Korean patients), or fenofibrate 160 mg, respectively daily for 2 months. RESULTS Omega-3 fatty acids therapy decreased triglycerides by 21% and triglycerides/HDL cholesterol and improved flow-mediated dilation (P<0.01), however, did not significantly change insulin, plasma adiponectin levels, and insulin sensitivity (determined by QUICKI) relative to baseline measurements. Fenofibrate therapy decreased total cholesterol, triglycerides by 29%, and triglycerides/HDL-cholesterol (all P<0.01) and improved flow-mediated dilation when compared with baseline. When compared with placebo and omega-3 fatty acids, fenofibrate therapy decreased non-HDL cholesterol (P<0.001) and triglycerides/HDL cholesterol (P=0.016) while increasing HDL cholesterol (P<0.001) and apolipoprotein AI (P=0.001). Of note, when compared with omega-3 fatty acids, fenofibrate therapy decreased fasting insulin (P=0.023) and increased plasma adiponectin (P=0.002) and insulin sensitivity (P=0.015). CONCLUSIONS Omega-3 fatty acids and fenofibrate therapy promoted similar changes in triglycerides and endothelium-dependent dilation. However, fenofibrate therapy had substantially better effects on lipoprotein and metabolic profiles in patients with hypertriglyceridemia.

Abstract
Adiponectin is an adipose tissue-specific hormone which is inversely associated with metabolic alterations related to atherosclerosis. Polymorphisms in the adiponectin gene (AdipoQ) have been related to low adiponectin levels as well as several cardiovascular risk factors, but this association remains controversial. In our study we investigated the relationship between the AdipoQ T45G (rs: 2241766) and G276T (rs: 1501299) polymorphisms and adiponectin concentrations, blood pressure, and lipid and insulin levels, in a population-based sample of 12- to 16-year-old children. The study included 815 healthy Spanish children (388 boys and 427 girls). Plasma glucose and lipid levels were determined by standard methods. Insulin concentrations were measured by RIA, and serum adiponectin levels were determined by ELISA. The AdipoQ T45G and AdipoQ G276T polymorphisms were determined by TaqMan(®) allelic discrimination assays. ANOVA or t test allowed for comparison of the studied parameters across genotypes or genotype groups, respectively. A linear regression analysis was performed to examine the independent relationships of the lipid variables with BMI (body mass index), AdipoQ G276T polymorphism and the interaction between the two. When independently comparing the effect of these polymorphisms in normal-weight and overweight children, we observed that overweight boys carriers of the minor allele T had significantly lower TC, LDL-C and apo A-I levels than non-carriers, but these differences were not apparent in normal-weight boys. Furthermore, linear regression analysis demonstrated that interaction between the BMI and the AdipoQ G276T polymorphism is a significant factor explaining the variations of TC and LDL-C levels. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an association between the AdipoQ G276T polymorphism and lipid levels in overweight boys alone, thereby suggesting that the influence of the AdipoQ polymorphisms on cardiovascular risk factors may be dependent on BMI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a systematic review with a meta-analysis for addressing the association between circulating adiponectin levels and the risk of colorectal cancer and adenoma. METHODS Multiple electronic sources including MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Science Citation Index Expanded databases were searched to identify relevant studies for this systematic review. All existing observational studies that examined the relationship between circulating adiponectin and colorectal cancer or adenoma were included. Weighted mean difference and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated and pooled using meta-analysis methods. RESULTS Overall 13 case control or nested case control studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 6175 participants and 3015 cases of colorectal cancer and adenoma were included in this meta-analysis. The weighted mean difference (95% CI) were -1.084 µg/mL (-1.836, -0.331), P = 0.005 in colorectal cancer and -1.43 µg/mL (-2.231, -0.628), P = 0.000 in adenoma. In men, a 2% decreased risk of colorectal neoplasm for a 1 µg/mL increment in adiponectin levels was observed (OR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-0.99) whereas among women there is no evidence of such a trend (OR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.97-1.01). CONCLUSIONS Patients with colorectal cancer and adenoma demonstrated markedly lower adiponectin values than controls, yet there was significant heterogeneity among studies. A negative dose response relationship between levels of adiponectin and the risk of colorectal neoplasm was observed in men.

Abstract
Recently, we identified ganglioside GM2 activator protein (GM2AP) as a novel adipokine, and revealed that treatment of cultured cells with GM2AP impairs insulin signal transduction. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of GM2AP on glucose metabolism in vivo. Injection of recombinant GM2AP in mice significantly lowered blood glucose levels in glucose tolerance tests. Administration of GM2AP to mice for 10 days increased serum insulin levels, whereas the contents of glucose, leptin and FFA were significantly decreased. Stimulation of calcium influx and insulin secretion by GM2AP was observed in hamster insulinoma HIT-T15 cells. Blockage of GM2AP function by specific antibodies inhibited GM2AP-induced insulin secretion. These results provide novel insights into the physiological functions of GM2AP in obesity.

Abstract
Adiponectin is an adipokine first described just over a decade ago. Produced almost exclusively by adipocytes, adiponectin circulates in high concentrations in human plasma. Research into this hormone has revealed it to have insulin-sensitizing, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective roles. This review discusses the history, biology and physiological role of adiponectin and explores its role in disease, with specific focus on adiponectin in inflammation and sepsis. It appears that an inverse relationship exists between adiponectin and inflammatory cytokines. Low levels of adiponectin have been found in critically ill patients, although data are limited in human subjects at this stage. The role of adiponectin in systemic inflammation and critical illness is not well defined. Early data suggest that plasma levels of adiponectin are decreased in critical illness. Whether this is a result of the disease process itself or whether patients with lower levels of this hormone are more susceptible to developing a critical illness is not known. This observation of lower adiponectin levels then raises the possibility of therapeutic options to increase circulating adiponectin levels. The various options for modulation of serum adiponectin (recombinant adiponectin, thiazolidinediones) are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The adipocyte-secreted hormone adiponectin exerts important cardioprotective and antidiabetic effects. Little is known about its effect on vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), key cells in restenosis, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS Using human coronary artery VSMC, we found that recombinant adiponectin in the high-molecular-weight or trimeric forms but not the globular form induced VSMC differentiation through a mechanism similar to the classic feedback signaling used by rapamycin, a drug known to effectively inhibit restenosis on drug-eluting stents. Using a combination of pharmacological agents, small interfering RNA, and overexpression approaches, we demonstrated that adiponectin activated 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase α2 isoform, leading to inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 and S6K1. This in turn stabilized insulin receptor substrate-1, driving Akt2-mediated inhibition of FoxO4 and subsequent contractile protein induction. Although adiponectin and rapamycin have similarly beneficial effects on VSMC phenotype in both cell and organ culture, a direct comparison of the effects of rapamycin versus adiponectin on endothelial cells revealed distinct differences: rapamycin inhibited Akt phosphorylation, whereas adiponectin maintained it. Importantly, Akt activity preserves endothelial function. CONCLUSION Adiponectin promotes VSMC differentiation and preserves endothelial cell Akt signaling, suggesting that targeting the adiponectin pathway may have advantages over rapamycin in developing new drug-eluting stent therapeutics.

Abstract
Reciprocal relationships between endothelial dysfunction and insulin resistance suggest that therapies improving endothelial dysfunction will simultaneously improve insulin sensitivity and other metabolic parameters. However, previous studies with some statins either did not alter insulin sensitivity or promoted insulin resistance despite significant improvements in endothelial dysfunction and decreases in circulating pro-inflammatory markers. This may be due to pleiotropic or off-target effects of some statins to cause insulin resistance by diverse mechanisms unrelated to endothelial dysfunction. Indeed, there is evidence of other differential metabolic actions of distinct statins including effects on hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibition, isoprotenoid synthesis, calcium release, glucose transport, insulin secretion, and/or insulin resistance. Pravastatin increases expression of adiponectin mRNA, enhances adiponectin secretion, increases plasma levels of adiponectin, and enhances insulin sensitivity in mice and humans. Clinical studies including large scale randomized controlled trials demonstrate potential differences between individual statins, with pravastatin promoting risk reduction for new onset of diabetes. Conversely, other statins including atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, and simvastatin all promote significant increase in this risk. Given the frequent concordance of metabolic diseases including diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome with cardiovascular diseases associated with hyperlipidemia, it is important to understand the potential metabolic risks and benefits of therapies with distinct statins. In this review, we discuss these differential effects of statins on metabolic homeostasis and insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
In an attempt to discover novel adipokines, we performed proteomics analyses using culture medium from differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and first identified GM2AP. The levels of GM2AP mRNA and protein were augmented by adipogenesis in cultured adipocytes and expression in adipose tissue and serum of obese mice or human subjects was found to be significantly higher than in lean counterparts. Exposure of 3T3-L1 adipocytes to GM2AP protein accelerated dissociation of insulin receptor-beta (IRβ) from caveolin-1, and interrupted insulin signal transduction. Abrogation of GM2AP function by specific antibodies augmented glucose uptake. Furthermore, treatment of rat pheochromocytoma PC12 NS1 cells with GM2AP impaired NGF signal transduction. Taken together, these results provide novel insights into the physiological functions of GM2AP in obesity.

Abstract
Despite proliferating literature, the exact relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and alterations in glucose metabolism is still controversial. There is growing evidence to suggest that OSA imposes adverse effects on glucose metabolism, but the translation into clinical effect is not well delineated. Many potential mechanisms are being explored, mostly relating to peripheral tissue response to insulin and more recently regarding pancreatic beta cell function of insulin secretion. The effect of OSA on glucose metabolism is likely to be influenced by many personal characteristics. Age, degree of adiposity, lifestyle, comorbidities, and even the stage of glucose disorder itself may modify the relationship between OSA and glucose metabolism. In the biologic system of the human body, all these interact to culminate in clinically relevant outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherosclerotic process starts at an early age and is linked to obesity. However, the exact pathophysiological mechanism is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin and metabolic syndrome and early arteriosclerosis. SUBJECTS 176 obese and 88 normal children. METHODS Ultrasound measurement was performed to investigate IMT, FMD, carotid artery compliance (CAC). Adiponectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Adiponectin levels correlated negatively with obese markers, blood pressure, fasting insulin, high sensitive CRP, HOMA-IR and IMT; marginally positively associated with CAC and HDL-c. The risk of metabolic syndrome increased 3.43 times when adiponectin levels were less than 7060 ng/ml. Heavy obesity, hypertension, low HDL-c, fasting hyperinsulin, High LDL-c and metabolic syndrome percentage were different in three groups according to the cut-off value of adiponectin. CONCLUSIONS Low adiponectin levels are associated with a high incidence of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
While type 2 diabetes is well-known to be associated with poorer cognitive performance, few studies have reported on the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and contributing factors, such as insulin-resistance (HOMA-IR), low adiponectin-, and high C-reactive protein (CRP)- levels. We studied whether these factors are related to cognitive function and which of the MetS components are independently associated. The study was embedded in an ongoing family-based cohort study in a Dutch population. All participants underwent physical examinations, biomedical measurements, and neuropsychological testing. Linear regression models were used to determine the association between MetS, HOMA-IR, adiponectin levels, CRP, and cognitive test scores. Cross-sectional analyses were performed in 1,898 subjects (mean age 48 years, 43% men). People with MetS had significantly higher HOMA-IR scores, lower adiponectin levels, and higher CRP levels. MetS and high HOMA-IR were associated with poorer executive function in women (P = 0.03 and P = 0.009). MetS and HOMA-IR are associated with poorer executive function in women.

Abstract
The proinflammatory and proatherogenic mediator, soluble CD40 ligand (CD40L), is increased in the metabolic syndrome (MS) and released from platelets. We hypothesized that adiponectin modulates platelet function, and we sought to evaluate the association of adiponectin and sCD40L levels with platelet aggregation in MS and the effects of adiponectin on platelet aggregation and activation. Platelet aggregation and circulating adiponectin, sCD40L and P-selectin were determined in 30 controls and 30 patients with MS. Also, in vitro studies were performed in platelet-rich plasma from nine healthy volunteers. Adiponectin receptors were demonstrated by Western blotting and flow cytometry. ADP and epinephrine platelet aggregation was measured after preincubation with adiponectin. sCD40L and P-selectin secretion was measured in the supernatants by ELISA. Patients with MS had higher sCD40L and P-selectin than controls (5.96 +/- 0.50 vs. 4.28 +/- 0.41 ng/ml, P < 0.05, and 151 +/- 8 vs. 122 +/- 9 ng/ml, P < 0.05). By contrast, adiponectin was lower in patients with MS than in controls (5.25 +/- 0.30 vs. 7.35 +/- 0.34 microg/ml, P < 0.001). Higher platelet aggregation was found in MS. Adiponectin inversely correlated with P-selectin (R = -0.35, P = 0.009), sCD40L (r = -0.24, P = 0.05) and epinephrine and collagen induced aggregation (r = -0.80, P = 0.005; r = -0.70, P = 0.011). Platelets express the receptors for adiponectin. Platelet aggregatory response to epinephrine and ADP significantly decreased following preincubation with adiponectin (96 +/- 4 vs. 23 +/- 3%, P < 0.001, and 102 +/- 9 vs. 85 +/- 9%, P = 0.004). Adiponectin prevented platelet sCD40L release (1.63 +/- 0.15 vs. 2.04 +/- 0.20 ng/ml, P < 0.001). Enhanced platelet aggregation and activation markers are found in MS associated with low adiponectin concentrations. Novel evidence is provided demonstrating that adiponectin has antithrombotic properties, since it inhibits platelet aggregation and platelet activation.

Abstract
Obesity, a highly prevalent condition, is heterogeneous with regard to its impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Epidemiological observations and metabolic investigations have consistently demonstrated that the accumulation of excess visceral fat is related to an increased risk of CVD as well as several metabolic and inflammatory perturbations. In the past decade, data from several studies have served to emphasize that atherosclerosis has an inflammatory component that may contribute to several key pathophysiological processes. Study data have also highlighted the finding that the expanded visceral fat is infiltrated by macrophages that conduct "cross-talk" with adipose tissue through several significant mechanisms. In this review, we provide, in the context of CVD risk, an up-to-date account of the complex interactions that occur between a dysfunctional adipose tissue phenotype and inflammation.
