Abstract
People show a robust tendency to gaze at other human beings when viewing images or videos, but were also found to relatively avoid gaze at others in several real-world situations. This discrepancy, along with theoretical considerations, spawned doubts about the appropriateness of classical laboratory-based experimental paradigms in social attention research. Several researchers instead suggested the use of immersive virtual scenarios in eliciting and measuring naturalistic attentional patterns, but the field, struggling with methodological challenges, still needs to establish the advantages of this approach. Here, we show using eye-tracking in a complex social scenario displayed in virtual reality that participants show enhanced attention towards the face of an avatar at near distance and demonstrate an increased reactivity towards her social gaze as compared to participants who viewed the same scene on a computer monitor. The present study suggests that reactive virtual agents observed in immersive virtual reality can elicit natural modes of information processing and can help to conduct ecologically more valid experiments while maintaining high experimental control.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent mental disorders in children and adolescents which may effectively be treated by several forms of exposure therapy. An emerging approach to exposure is virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), but a literature search synthesis focusing specifically on the use of VRET in children and adolescents is still lacking. This systematic review sets out to provide an overview concerning VRET for the treatment of anxiety disorders in this age group. Four published trials covering an overall sample of 100 participants between the ages of 8 and 16 years were found during a systematic literature search and were included in the current review. Results reveal that participants show clinical improvements regarding anxiety symptoms after VRET. Nevertheless, the high potential of virtual reality as a tool for treating children and adolescents with anxiety disorders is contrasted by a considerable lack of controlled trials. Despite the evidence of VRET in adult samples, there is a need for more research with younger cohorts in order to be able to support this promising field of application.

Abstract
Abstract. Psychosocial stress has been shown to alter social
perception and behavior. In the present study, we investigated whether a
standardized psychosocial stressor modulates the perceptual sensitivity for
positive and negative facial emotions and the tendency to allocate attention to
facial expressions. Fifty-four male participants underwent the Trier Social
Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G) or a nonstressful control condition before they
performed a facial emotions detection task and a facial dot-probe task to assess
attention for positive and negative facial expressions. Saliva samples were
collected over the course of the experiment to measure free cortisol and alpha
amylase. In response to the TSST-G, participants showed marked increases in
subjective stress, salivary cortisol, and alpha amylase compared to the control
condition. In the control condition, detection performance was higher for angry
compared to happy facial expressions, while in the stressful condition this
difference was reversed. Here, participants were more sensitive to happy
compared to angry facial expressions. Attention was unaffected by psychosocial
stress. The results suggest that psychosocial stress shifts social perception in
terms of detection sensitivity for facial expressions toward positive social
cues, a pattern that is consistent with the tendency to seek social support for
coping with stress.

The availability of biological markers that objectively quantify stress is a highly relevant issue. However, experimental evidence suggests that most physiological changes elicited by emotional stressors do not reflect their intensity and are not useful for this purpose. Thus, we review experimental evidence in animals and humans about the putative validity of neuroendocrine and sympathetic/parasympathetic variables to measure stress. Plasma levels of some hormones (e.g. ACTH, glucocorticoids, prolactin and catecholamines) have been found to reflect, at least under certain conditions, the intensity of emotional stressors in animals and probably in humans. However, the temporal resolution of hormone changes is insufficient to reflect the very dynamic psychological processes taking place while experiencing stressors. Cardiovascular parameters (e.g. heart rate and blood pressure) have much better temporal resolution but their validity as markers of stressor intensity either in animals or humans is problematic. Skin conductance and pupil dilation appear to be promising. Additional and more systematic studies are needed to demonstrate the actual validity of stress-induced physiological changes to quantify stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maladaptive responses to stressors can lead to poor physical and psychological health outcomes. Laboratory studies of stress induction commonly use the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). The TSST has been shown to reliably induce a stress response, most commonly measured via cortisol reactivity. Recently, researchers have used virtual environment versions of the TSST (V-TSST) in place of the traditional TSST. The V-TSST has many advantages over the traditional TSST, including increased standardization and use of fewer resources, but V-TSST has yet to be quantitatively reviewed and compared to the traditional TSST. This review aims to quantifying the effectiveness of V-TSST with a meta-analysis of cortisol response effects and identify potential moderating variables that are more likely to induce a cortisol response with V-TSST. METHODS Literature searches were conducted including the key words Trier Social Stress Test, TSST, and virtual reality. Thirteen studies were included in this meta-analysis after meeting the inclusion criteria of utilizing a V-TSST and having cortisol measurements at baseline and peak stress to assess cortisol reactivity. The standardized mean gain effect size was used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION There was a medium average effect size (ESsg = 0.65) across all studies for increase in cortisol from baseline to peak measurement. Significant moderating effects were seen for participant age, sex, and level of immersivity of the virtual environment. Studies in which participants were under 25 years old, or all male, showed greater effect sizes for cortisol reactivity. Virtual environments that were more immersive also evidenced greater effect sizes. Although the V-TSST is effective at inducing psychosocial stress, the magnitude of this response is less than the traditional TSST. Based on these results, recommendations for future research are provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The social brain is dysfunctional in numerous stress-related psychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE The definition of social brain networks and their susceptibility for social environmental stress. It is also reviewed how social brain networks are disrupted in schizophrenia, autism and conduct disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS Literature search in PubMed. RESULTS The social brain consists of several subnetworks that act in concert to foster empathy. Interestingly, except for the mirror neuron system, the neural networks of the social brain have been reported to be vulnerable to social environmental stress and have also been highlighted as being compromised in psychiatric disorders. As an example, schizophrenia is related to dysfunction in social perception, mentalizing, and affiliation, whereas the most pronounced deficits in autism are seen during social perception and mentalizing. Patients with conduct disorder are more prone to dysfunction in perception, affiliation and aversion. CONCLUSION Social stress affects subnetworks also compromised in psychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is plausible that the social brain might mediate the association between social stress and psychiatric disorders. To advance ecological validity in social neuroscience, recent research has highlighted the role of hyperscanning and virtual reality as means by which a more naturalistic assessment of social interactions might be feasible.

Abstract
Immersive virtual reality (VR) emerges as a promising research and clinical tool. However, several studies suggest that VR induced adverse symptoms and effects (VRISE) may undermine the health and safety standards, and the reliability of the scientific results. In the current literature review, the technical reasons for the adverse symptomatology are investigated to provide suggestions and technological knowledge for the implementation of VR head-mounted display (HMD) systems in cognitive neuroscience. The technological systematic literature indicated features pertinent to display, sound, motion tracking, navigation, ergonomic interactions, user experience, and computer hardware that should be considered by the researchers. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of 44 neuroscientific or neuropsychological studies involving VR HMD systems was performed. The meta-analysis of the VR studies demonstrated that new generation HMDs induced significantly less VRISE and marginally fewer dropouts. Importantly, the commercial versions of the new generation HMDs with ergonomic interactions had zero incidents of adverse symptomatology and dropouts. HMDs equivalent to or greater than the commercial versions of contemporary HMDs accompanied with ergonomic interactions are suitable for implementation in cognitive neuroscience. In conclusion, researchers' technological competency, along with meticulous methods and reports pertinent to software, hardware, and VRISE, are paramount to ensure the health and safety standards and the reliability of neuroscientific results.

Abstract
Living in a disadvantaged neighborhood is associated with worse health and early mortality. Although many mechanisms may partially account for this effect, disadvantaged neighborhood environments are hypothesized to elicit stress and emotional responses that accumulate over time and influence physical and mental health. However, evidence for neighborhood effects on stress and emotion is limited due to methodological challenges. In order to address this question, we developed a virtual reality experimental model of neighborhood disadvantage and affluence and examined the effects of simulated neighborhoods on immediate stress and emotion. Exposure to neighborhood disadvantage resulted in greater negative emotion, less positive emotion, and more compassion, compared to exposure to affluence. However, the effect of virtual neighborhood environments on blood pressure and electrodermal reactivity depended on parental education. Participants from families with lower education exhibited greater reactivity to the disadvantaged neighborhood, while those from families with higher education exhibited greater reactivity to the affluent neighborhood. These results demonstrate that simulated neighborhood environments can elicit immediate stress reactivity and emotion, but the nature of physiological effects depends on sensitization to prior experience.

Abstract
Facial emotion recognition is an important prerequisite for social cognition. There is, however, limited evidence on how the ability to detect facial emotions is influenced by acute stress and the associated physiological reactions. In this study, two groups of healthy male participants were either exposed to a psychosocial stressor - an adaptation of the Trier Social Stress Test in virtual reality (n = 23) - or a non-stressful control task in the virtual environment (n = 20). Afterwards, both groups completed a computerized facial recognition task based on the signal detection theory presenting happy vs. angry faces with three different expression intensities. Saliva samples were taken at seven time points over the course of the experiment and used to analyze concentrations of free salivary cortisol and alpha amylase. Analyses using repeated-measures analyses of variance revealed a significant increase in emotion detection performance and significantly shorter response latencies in the stress group independent of emotional valence or emotion intensity. However, increased task performance in the stress group could not be predicted by stress-induced cortisol or alpha amylase secretion. The results suggest that enhanced detection of emotional cues after stress might be an adaptive response as an increased sensitivity to social cues might help individuals to detect potential threats or sources of social support in their social environment. Lay Summary Socially evaluative stress facilitates the subsequent recognition of emotions. After having performed a task in a virtual environment, two groups of participants were asked to detect emotion expressions on pictures of faces that were presented to them on a computer screen. Statistical comparison of groups indicates that the group that had previously been subjected to a stressful job interview showed better results and became faster in detecting displayed emotions than the control group that had previously performed a non-stressful task.
