Porous carbon-based adsorption systems for natural gas (methane) storage

The use of gas fuel has considerable environmental advantages over traditional types of fuel based on petroleum products or fossil coal. The adsorption technology for methane (natural gas) uptake, storage and transportation can serve as a connecting link in gas supply to customers. The review considers characteristics of adsorption systems for methane storage. The key methods used for the synthesis of microporous carbon adsorbents based on various organic and inorganic carbon-containing compounds are described. Methods for increasing the efficiency of methane storage systems based on carbon adsorbents are analyzed. Theoretical approaches to optimization of the properties of methane – carbon adsorbent systems are discussed.

Progress on Incorporating Zeolites in Matrimid®5218 Mixed Matrix Membranes towards Gas Separation

Membranes, as perm-selective barriers, have been widely applied for gas separation applications. Since some time ago, pure polymers have been used mainly for the preparation of membranes, considering different kinds of polymers for such preparation. At this point, polyimides (e.g., Matrimid^®5218) are probably one of the most considered polymers for this purpose. However, the limitation on the performance relationship of polymeric membranes has promoted their enhancement through the incorporation of different inorganic materials (e.g., zeolites) into their matrix. Therefore, the aim of this work is to provide an overview about the progress of zeolite embedding in Matrimid^®5218, aiming at the preparation of mixed matrix membranes for gas separation. Particular attention is paid to the relevant experimental results and current findings. Finally, we describe the prospects and future trends in the field.

Direct determination of graphene quantum dots based on terbium-sensitized luminescence

Graphene quantum dots (GQD) were determined in water samples using terbium-sensitized luminescence (TSL). Terbium ions complex with GQD due to the carboxylic groups that are usually present in these nanomaterials, increasing the luminescence signal of terbium. In Tb(III)-GQD complexes, GQD absorb energy at their characteristic excitation wavelength and transfer it to terbium ion, which emits at its particular emission wavelength. The analytical signal, measured at λ_exc=257nm and λ_em=545nm, increases proportionally to GQD concentration between 50 and 500μgL^-1. Under optimum conditions, the proposed method presents a detection limit of 15μgL^-1 and is selective to GQD in the presence of other nanomaterials of similar size. As GQD are highly water-soluble, they are potential contaminants in environmental or drinking waters water samples, and hence the method was applied to the analysis of different drinking waters which were the target samples for the application of the developed method.

Preparation of stable tetraethylenepentamine-modified ordered mesoporous silica sorbents by recycling natural Equisetum ramosissimum

It is well-known that global warming of the earth is caused by the progressive increase of CO₂ concentration in the environment due to the huge utilization of fossil fuels. As a result, the development of an efficient and economic method to capture CO₂ from large stationary sources, such as coal-fired power plants, cement and steel factories, and so on is urgent. In this study, ordered mesoporous silicas (E-SBA-15) have been prepared by using Equisetum ramosissimum plants as the silica sources and their subsequently incorporating with amino-containing compounds (tetraethylenepentamine, TEPA) and stabilizers (titanium isopropoxide, TIP). A variety of different spectroscopic and analytical techniques, such as nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, low-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are used to characterize the physicochemical properties of various materials. CO₂ adsorption capacities of prepared sorbents at 75 °C are obtained by TGA at atmospheric pressure. Among all sorbents, TEPA impregnated E-SBA-15 sorbents possess the highest CO₂ sorption capacity (1.60 mmol CO₂ g^-1_sorbent) under ambient pressure using dry 15% CO₂. However, TEPA/TIP incorporated E-SBA-15 sorbents exhibit enhanced durability during repeated sorption-desorption cycles compared to the above-mentioned sorbents. This significant enhancement in the stability of CO₂ sorption-desorption process is most likely due to the decreased decomposition/leaching of TEPA which is restricted via the steric effect of TIP. These synthesized sorbents from inexpensive resources (agricultural waste) exhibit good sorbent capacity and surpassing regenerability, revealing a promising CO₂ sorbent for the cost-effective applications in a cyclic adsorption process.
