A review on metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis and applications

State of the art and prospects of zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in dairy wastewater

Water is an essential resource for humans, animals, and plants. Water is also necessary for the manufacture of many products such as milk, textiles, paper, and pharmaceutical composites. During manufacturing, some industries generate a large amount of wastewater containing numerous contaminants. In the dairy industry, for each litre of drinking milk produced, about 10 L of wastewater is generated. Despite this environmental footprint, the production of milk, butter, ice cream, baby formula, etc., are essential in many households. Common contaminants in dairy wastewater include high biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), salts as well as nitrogen and phosphorus derivatives. Nitrogen and phosphorus discharges are one of the leading causes in the eutrophication of rivers and oceans. Porous materials have long held significant potential as a disruptive technology for wastewater treatment. However, thus far they have been understudied for use in dairy wastewater treatment. Ordered porous materials, such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), represent classes of porous materials with significant potential for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. This review explores the different zeolites and MOFs applied in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater and the prospect of their potential for use in wastewater management in the dairy industry.

Innovative Metal-Organic Frameworks for Targeted Oral Cancer Therapy: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be very effective carriers for drug delivery in various biological applications. In recent years, the development of hybrid nanostructures has made significant progress, including developing an innovative MOF-loaded nanocomposite with a highly porous structure and low toxicity that can be used to fabricate core-shell nanocomposites by combining complementary materials. This review study discusses using MOF materials in cancer treatment, imaging, and antibacterial effects, focusing on oral cancer cells. For patients with oral cancer, we offer a regular program for accurately designing and producing various anticancer and antibacterial agents to achieve maximum effectiveness and the lowest side effects. Also, we want to ensure that the anticancer agent works optimally and has as few side effects as possible before it is tested in vitro and in vivo. It is also essential that new anticancer drugs for cancer treatment are tested for efficacy and safety before they go into further research.

Construction of High Quantum Yield Lanthanide Luminescent MOF Platform by In Situ Doping and Its Temperature Sensing Performance

Lanthanide luminescent MOF materials show excellent luminescent properties. However, obtaining lanthanide luminescent MOFs with high quantum yield is a challenging research. A novel bismuth-based metal-organic framework [Bi(SIP)(DMF)₂] was constructed by solvothermal method, utilizing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaH₂SIP) and Bi(NO₃)₃·5H₂O. Thereafter, doped MOFs (Ln-Bi-SIP, Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy, Yb, Nd, Er) with different luminescent properties have been obtained by in situ doping with different lanthanide metal ions, among which Eu-Bi-SIP, Tb-Bi-SIP, Sm-Bi-SIP, and Dy-Bi-SIP have high quantum yield. What is special is that the doping amount of Ln³⁺ ions is very low, and the doped MOF can achieve high luminescence quantum yields. EuTb-Bi-SIP obtained by Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ codoping and Dy-Bi-SIP exhibit good temperature sensing performance over a wide temperature range with the maximum sensitivity S_r of 1.6%·K^-1 (433 K) and 2.6%·K^-1, respectively (133 K), while the cycling experiments also show good repeatability in the assay temperature range. Finally, considering the practical application value, EuTb-Bi-SIP was blended with an organic polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce a thin film, which shows different color changes at different temperatures.

Multimetallic nanoparticles decorated metal-organic framework for boosting peroxidase-like catalytic activity and its application in point-of-care testing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a sort of promising peroxidase-like nanozyme but face the challenge that the inorganic nodes in most of the MOF structures are generally blocked by the organic linkers. Further enhancement or activation of their peroxidase-like activity plays an important role in developing MOF-based nanozymes. Herein, a multimetallic nanoparticle (NP) decorated-MOF, Cu/Au/Pt NP decorated-Cu-TCPP(Fe) nanozyme (CuAuPt/Cu-TCPP(Fe)) was synthesized in situ and served as a peroxidase-like nanozyme. The peroxidase-like activity of this stable CuAuPt/Cu-TCPP(Fe) nanozyme was enhanced due to the decreased potential barriers for *OH generation in the catalytic process. Owing to the remarkable peroxidase-like activity, a CuAuPt/Cu-TCPP(Fe)-based colorimetric assay was established for the sensitive determination of H₂O₂ and glucose with the limit of detection (LOD) of 9.3 µM and 4.0 µM, respectively. In addition, a visual point-of-care testing (POCT) device was developed by integrating the CuAuPt/Cu-TCPP(Fe)-based test strips with a smartphone and was employed for a portable test of 20 clinical serum glucose samples. The results determined by this method agree well with the values deduced by clinical automatic biochemical analysis. This work not only represents an inspiration for the usage of MNP/MOF composite as a novel nanozyme for POCT diagnosis, but also provides a deeper insight and understanding into the enhanced enzyme-mimic effect of MNP-hybrid MOF composites, which in turn will guide the engineering of MOF-based functional nanomaterials. Stabilization of Pd NPs over the surface of β-cyclodextrin incorporated UiO-66-NH2 for the C-C coupling reaction

Here, we prepared UiO-66-NH₂ and employed a post-synthesis modification method for its functionalization with a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) organic compound. The resulting composite was employed as a support for the heterogenization of the Pd NPs. Various techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and elemental mapping, were used to characterize UiO-66-NH₂@β-CD/Pd_NPs, indicating its successful preparation. Three C-C coupling reactions, including the Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira coupling reactions, were promoted using the produced catalyst. As a result of the PSM, the proposed catalyst displays improved catalytic performance. In addition, the suggested catalyst was highly recyclable up to 6 times.

Dual-targeting lanthanide-ICG-MOF nanoplatform for cancer Theranostics: NIR II luminescence imaging guided sentinel lymph nodes surgical navigation

Sentinel lymph node imaging is important for breast tumor staging and prediction of postoperative metastasis. However, clinical sentinel lymph node imaging has limitations such as low specificity, low contrast, and short retention time. The combination of bio-conjugates chemistry and luminescence technology may achieve the specific targeting effect. In this research, we designed a dual-targeting composite nanoprobe (∼50 nm) using a metal-organic framework (MOF) as carrier, loaded with lanthanide and ICG, and combined with hyaluronic acid and folic acid to detect metastatic lymph nodes. The coupled hyaluronic acid and folic acid can target to the tumor cells and dentritic cells with a dual-targeting effect. The FA-HA/ZIF-8@ICG nanoprobes can accumulate rapidly in sentinel lymph node with a stronger luminescence intensity (1.6 times) than that of normal popliteal lymph nodes in vivo, thus distinguish metastatic sentinel lymph node from normal effectively. Furthermore, due to the MOF carrier, the integrated lanthanide and near-infrared dye by transferring the absorbed excitation energy from ICG to Nd³⁺ can enhance the signal-to-background ratio of NIR II imaging and have long retention time in vivo imaging. Finally, the FA-HA/ICG@Ln@ZIF-8 nanoplatform increased the penetration depth and contrast of imaging, prolonged the retention time, and achieved the sentinel lymph nodes surgical resection. This study has important implications for lymph node imaging and surgical navigation.

Nickel-Cobalt Salen Organometallic Complexes Encapsulated in Mesoporous NaA Nanozeolite for Electrocatalytic Quantification of Ascorbic Acid and Paracetamol

Goal of current study was fabrication of novel voltammetric nanosensor for the synchronize quantification of ascorbic acid (AA) and paracetamol (PAR) by nickel-cobalt salen complexes encapsulated in the supercages of NaA nanozeolite modified carbon paste electrode (NiCoSalenA/CPE). For this purpose, NiCoSalenA nanocomposite was firstly prepared and characterized by various methods. Also, cyclic voltammetry (CV), choronoamperometry (CHA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were utilized to evaluate performance of the modified electrodes. The effects of pH and modifier amount were considered on the electrochemical oxidation of AA and PAR on the surface of NiCoSalenA/CPE. Results from this method indicated that pH of 3.0 in phosphate buffer solution (0.1 M) and 15 wt% of NiCoSalenA nanocomposite in the modified CPE results in the maximum current density. The oxidation signals of AA and PAR was amplified affectively at NiCoSalenA/CPE versus unmodified CPE. The limit of detection (LOD) and linear dynamic range (LDR) for the simultaneous measurement of them were founds to be 0.82 and 2.73-80.70 for AA and 0.51 µM, 1.71-32.50 and 32.50-137.60 µM for PAR, respectively. The catalytic rate constants (kcat) were attained to be 3.73 × 107 and 1.27 × 107 cm3 mol-1 s-1 for AA and PAR via CHA method, respectively. Also, the amounts of diffusion coefficient (D) were found to be 1.12 × 10-7 and 1.92 × 10-7 cm2 s-1 for AA and PAR, respectively. The average value of electron transfer rate constant between NiCoSalenA/CPE and PAR was obtained to be 0.016 s-1. The NiCoSalen-A/CPE displayed worthy stability, repeatability and extraordinary recovery for simultaneous measurements of AA and PAR. Application of offered sensor was confirmed by quantifying concentrations of AA and PAR in human serum solution as a real sample.

Rapid detection of foodborne pathogens in diverse foodstuffs by universal electrochemical aptasensor based on UiO-66 and methylene blue composites

Rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens in complex environments is essential for food protection. A universal electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated for the detection of three common foodborne pathogens, including Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). The aptasensor was developed based on the homogeneous and membrane filtration strategy. Zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66)/methylene blue (MB)/aptamer composite was designed as a signal amplification and recognition probe. Bacteria were quantitatively detected by the current changes of MB. By simply changing the aptamer, different bacteria could be detected. The detection limits of E. coli, S. aureus and S. typhimurium were 5, 4 and 3 CFU·mL^-1, respectively. In humidity and salt environments, the stability of the aptasensor was satisfactory. The aptasensor exhibited satisfactory detection performance in different real samples. This aptasensor has excellent potential for rapid detection of foodborne pathogens in complex environments.

Effect of a Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework Structure on the Properties of Its Composite with Polyaniline

Composites of polyaniline (PANI) and Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂, were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of MOF templates with the MOF content in the resulting materials (78.2 and 86.7 wt %, respectively) close to the theoretical value (91.5 wt %). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the morphology of the composites was set by the morphology of the MOFs, whose structure was mostly preserved after the synthesis, based on the X-ray diffraction data. Vibrational and NMR spectroscopies pointed out that MOFs participate in the protonation of PANI and conducting polymer chains were grafted to amino groups of UiO-66-NH₂. Unlike PANI-UiO-66, cyclic voltammograms of PANI-UiO-66-NH₂ showed a well-resolved redox peak at around ≈0 V, pointing at the pseudocapacitive behavior. The gravimetric capacitance of PANI-UiO-66-NH₂, normalized per mass of the active material, was also found to be higher compared to that of pristine PANI (79.8 and 50.5 F g^-1, respectively, at 5 mV s^-1). The introduction of MOFs into the composites with PANI significantly improved the cycling stability of the materials over 1000 cycles compared to the pristine conducting polymer, with the residual gravimetric capacitance being ≥100 and 77%, respectively. Thus, the electrochemical performance of the prepared PANI-MOF composites makes them attractive materials for application in energy storage.

Smart Nanomaterials in Cancer Theranostics: Challenges and Opportunities

Cancer is ranked as the second leading cause of death globally. Traditional cancer therapies including chemotherapy are flawed, with off-target and on-target toxicities on the normal cells, requiring newer strategies to improve cell selective targeting. The application of nanomaterial has been extensively studied and explored as chemical biology tools in cancer theranostics. It shows greater applications toward stability, biocompatibility, and increased cell permeability, resulting in precise targeting, and mitigating the shortcomings of traditional cancer therapies. The nanoplatform offers an exciting opportunity to gain targeting strategies and multifunctionality. The advent of nanotechnology, in particular the development of smart nanomaterials, has transformed cancer diagnosis and treatment. The large surface area of nanoparticles is enough to encapsulate many molecules and the ability to functionalize with various biosubstrates such as DNA, RNA, aptamers, and antibodies, which helps in theranostic action. Comparatively, biologically derived nanomaterials perceive advantages over the nanomaterials produced by conventional methods in terms of economy, ease of production, and reduced toxicity. The present review summarizes various techniques in cancer theranostics and emphasizes the applications of smart nanomaterials (such as organic nanoparticles (NPs), inorganic NPs, and carbon-based NPs). We also critically discussed the advantages and challenges impeding their translation in cancer treatment and diagnostic applications. This review concludes that the use of smart nanomaterials could significantly improve cancer theranostics and will facilitate new dimensions for tumor detection and therapy.

Cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks in molecular delivery, detection, separation, and capture: An updated critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination compounds with tuneable structures and controllable functions. However, the biological toxicity of traditional MOFs materials is often inevitable, making their application in the biological field have many limitations. Therefore, frontier research increasingly focuses on developing biocompatible MOFs materials. Cyclodextrins (CDs), derived from starch, are favored by various biomaterials due to their good biosafety and are often seen in the preparation and application of MOFs materials. This review describes the features of MOFs materials, and the various preparation methods of CD-MOFs are analyzed in detail from the perspective of CD classification. Additionally, the promising applications of CD-MOFs materials for delivery, detection, separation, and capture of active molecules in recent studies are systematically discussed and summarized. In terms of safety, the CD-MOFs materials are meticulously summarized. Finally, this review presents the challenges and future prospects regarding the current CD-MOFs-based materials, which will shed new light on the application of such materials in various fields.

Topological Entropy Characterization, NMR and ESR Spectral Patterns of Coronene-Based Transition Metal Organic Frameworks

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are topical crystalline materials with high porosity and inner surface areas synthesized from naturally occurring minerals. Such MOFs with transition metals have attracted considerable attention because of their fascinating morphological diversity and tunable characteristics. The coronene-based structural frameworks with transition metal atoms are synthesized by repeating a fixed coronene unit at several levels. In this study, topological indices and NMR and ESR spectral patterns are computed for these MOFs to shed light on their structures and spectral properties. We obtained mathematical expressions of topological indices based on degree and degree-sum values of MOFs for the rectangular, hexagonal, and parallelogram peripheral shapes. Furthermore, the entropy measures of these novel frameworks are evaluated with the help of index functionals and compared to a wide range of degree-based descriptors. The NMR and ESR spectral patterns have been obtained from the distance degree vector sequences and symmetries for the three MOFs.

CO2 Capture and Gas Storage Capacities Enhancement of HKUST-1 by Hybridization with Functionalized Graphene-like Materials

The role of graphene related material (GRM) functionalization on the structural and adsorption properties of MOF-based hybrids was deepened by exploring the use of three GRMs obtained from the chemical demolition of a nanostructured carbon black. Oxidized graphene-like (GL-ox), hydrazine reduced graphene-like (GL), and amine-grafted graphene-like (GL-NH₂) materials have been used for the preparation of Cu-HKUST-1 based hybrids. After a full structural characterization, the hybrid materials underwent many adsorption-desorption cycles to evaluate their capacities to capture CO₂ and store CH₄ at high pressure. All the MOF-based samples showed very high specific surface area (SSA) values and total pore volumes, but different pore size distributions attributed to the instauration of interactions between the MOF precursors and the specific functional groups on the GRM surface during MOF growth. All the samples showed a good affinity toward both gases (CO₂ and CH₄) and a comparable structural stability and integrity (possible aging was excluded). The trend of the maximum storage capacity values of the four MOF samples toward CO₂ and CH₄ was HKUST-1/GL-NH₂ > HKUST-1 > HKUST-1/GL-ox > HKUST-1/GL. Overall, the measured CO₂ and CH₄ uptakes were in line with or higher than those already reported in the open literature for Cu-HKUST-1 based hybrids evaluated in similar conditions.

Pressure-Induced Structural Effects in the Square Lattice () Topology Coordination Network Sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX

A high-pressure study of a switching coordination network of square lattice topology (sql) loaded with o-xylene (OX), [Co(4,4'-bipyridine)₂(NCS)₂] _n ·4nC₈H₁₀ (sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX), was conducted up to approximately 1 GPa to investigate pressure-induced structural changes. Previous reports revealed that sql-1-Co-NCS exhibits multiple phases thanks to its ability to switch between closed (nonporous) and several open (porous) phases in the presence of various gases, vapors, and liquids. Networks of such properties are of topical interest because they can offer high working capacity and improved recyclability for gas adsorption. The monoclinic crystal structure of sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX at 100 K was previously reported to show an increase in interlayer separation of more than 100% compared to the corresponding closed phase, sql-1-Co-NCS, when exposed to gases or vapors under ambient conditions. Herein, a tetragonal crystal form of sql-1-Co-NCS·4OX (space group I4/mmm, Phase I) that exists at 0.1 MPa/303 K is reported. Exposure of Phase I to high pressure using penetrable pressure transmitting media (OX and 1:1 vol MeOH/EtOH) did not result in further separation of the sql networks. Rather, compression of the crystals and release of adsorbed OX molecules occurred. These pressure-induced changes are discussed in terms of structural voids, framework conformation, and molecular packing of the sql layers. Although Phase I retained tetragonal symmetry throughout the investigated pressure range, the interlayer voids occupied by OX molecules were significantly reduced between 0.3 and 0.5 GPa; further compression above 0.5 GPa induced structural disorder. Additionally, analysis of the electron count present in the pores of sql-1-Co-NCS confirmed the multistep evacuation of OX molecules from the crystal, and two intermediate phases, Ia and Ib, differing in the OX loading level, are postulated.

MOFs Containing Solid-State Electrolytes for Batteries

The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has been a very attractive research area that has received widespread attention in the modern world. SSEs can be divided into different types, some of which can be combined with MOFs to improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries by taking advantage of the high surface area and high porosity of MOFs. However, it also faces many serious problems and challenges. In this review, different types of SSEs are classified and the changes in these electrolytes after the addition of MOFs are described. Afterward, these SSEs with MOFs attached are introduced for different types of battery applications and the effects of these SSEs combined with MOFs on the electrochemical performance of the cells are described. Finally, some challenges faced by MOFs materials in batteries applications are presented, then some solutions to the problems and development expectations of MOFs are given.

Inorganic nanoparticles as scaffolds for bioorthogonal catalysts

Bioorthogonal transition metal catalysts (TMCs) transform therapeutically inactive molecules (pro-drugs) into active drug compounds. Inorganic nanoscaffolds protect and solubilize catalysts while offering a flexible design space for decoration with targeting elements and stimuli-responsive activity. These "drug factories" can activate pro-drugs in situ, localizing treatment to the disease site and minimizing off-target effects. Inorganic nanoscaffolds provide structurally diverse scaffolds for encapsulating TMCs. This ability to define the catalyst environment can be employed to enhance the stability and selectivity of the TMC, providing access to enzyme-like bioorthogonal processes. The use of inorganic nanomaterials as scaffolds TMCs and the use of these bioorthogonal nanozymes in vitro and in vivo applications will be discussed in this review.

A Brief Overview of the Microstructural Engineering of Inorganic-Organic Composite Membranes Derived from Organic Chelating Ligands

This review presents a concise conceptual overview of membranes derived from organic chelating ligands as studied in several works. The authors' approach is from the viewpoint of the classification of membranes by matrix composition. The first part presents composite matrix membranes as a key class of membranes and makes a case for the importance of organic chelating ligands in the formation of inorganic-organic composites. Organic chelating ligands, categorized into network-modifying and network-forming types, are explored in detail in the second part. Four key structural elements, of which organic chelating ligands (as organic modifiers) are one and which also include siloxane networks, transition-metal oxide networks and the polymerization/crosslinking of organic modifiers, form the building blocks of organic chelating ligand-derived inorganic-organic composites. Three and four parts explore microstructural engineering in membranes derived from network-modifying and network-forming ligands, respectively. The final part reviews robust carbon-ceramic composite membranes as important derivatives of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers for selective gas separation under hydrothermal conditions when the proper organic chelating ligand and crosslinking conditions are chosen. This review can serve as inspiration for taking advantage of the wide range of possibilities presented by organic chelating ligands.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Sensors for Human Amyloid Diseases

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are versatile compounds with emergent applications in the fabrication of biosensors for amyloid diseases. They hold great potential in biospecimen protection and unprecedented probing capabilities for optical and redox receptors. In this Review, we summarize the main methodologies employed in the fabrication of MOF-based sensors for amyloid diseases and collect all available data in the literature related to their performance (detection range, limit of detection, recovery, time of analysis, among other parameters). Nowadays, MOF sensors have evolved to a point where they can, in some cases, outperform technologies employed in the detection of several amyloid biomarkers (amyloid β peptide, α-synuclein, insulin, procalcitonin, and prolactin) present in biological fluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid and blood. A special emphasis has been given by researchers on Alzheimer's disease monitoring to the detriment of other amyloidosis that are underexploited despite their societal relevance (e.g., Parkinson's disease). There are still important obstacles to overcome in order to selectively detect the various peptide isoforms and soluble amyloid species associated with Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, MOF contrast agents for imaging peptide soluble oligomers in living humans are also scarce (if not nonexistent), and action in this direction is unquestionably required to clarify the contentious link between the amyloidogenic species and the disease, guiding research toward the most promising therapeutic strategies.

XRD and Spectroscopic Investigations of ZIF-Microchannel Glass Plates Composites

In this study, new composite materials comprising zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) structures and microchannel glass (MCG) plates were fabricated using the hydrothermal method and their morphological and spectral properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. XRD studies of powder samples revealed the presence of an additional phase for a ZIF-8 sample, whereas ZIF-67 samples, which were prepared through two different chemical routes, showed no additional phases. A detailed analysis of the FTIR and micro-Raman spectra of the composite samples revealed the formation of stable ZIF structures inside the macropores of the MCG substrate. The hydrophilic nature of the MCG substrate and its interaction with the ZIF structure resulted in the formation of stable ZIF-MCG composites. We believe that these composite materials may find a wide range of important applications in the field of sensors, molecular sieving.

A monolithic composite based on zeolite-like metal-organic framework@divinylbenzene polymer separates azeotropic fluorocarbon mixture efficiently

Organic monolithic columns are mainly used to separate macromolecules; however, many attempts to extend their performance toward small molecules were examined by incorporating micro- and nanoparticles. The incorporation technique enabled utilizing organic monoliths in gas chromatography (GC) for small molecules, which are still scarce. Here, we prepared a composite matrix of capillary monolithic columns of a zeolite-like metal-organic framework with a sodalite topology (sod-ZMOF) and Divinylbenzene polymer (DVB) for GC separations under 0.5 MPa. Relatively short DVB monolithic columns (18 cm long × 0.25 mm i.d.) incorporated with a tiny amount of sod-ZMOF nanoparticles (0.7 and 1.17 wt%) with an average particle size of 225 nm were successfully fabricated and used to separate linear alkanes and polar probes mixtures with increasing resolution up to 3.7 and 5.1 times, respectively, compared to a blank DVB monolithic column. A high-performance separation of linear alkanes series mixture (methane to decane) was exhibited in less than 2 min. McReynolds constants revealed that sod-ZMOF provided the composite monolith with a nonpolar character yielding a negative average polarity value smaller than the standard squalene column. An Excellent retention time of pentane and octane day-to-day reproducibility was achieved during 16 days and over more than 500 runs with RSD% of 2.25% and 3.3% using a composite monolithic column with 5 mg mL^-1 sod-ZMOF (5-ZMOF@DVB). In addition, a qualitative determination of the gas mixture content of three commercially available Lighter gas cartridges was performed via the 5-ZMOF@DVB column. Finally, successfully separating an azeotropic freon mixture of difluoromethane (R-32) and pentafluoroethane (R-125) was achieved with a selectivity of up to 4.84. A further thermodynamic study related the preferential adsorption of R-125 to entropic factors rather than enthalpic while trapping inside ZMOF pores. This work sheds light on utilizing the infinite diversity of MOFs and combining their properties with high permeability and easily fabricated organic monoliths for GC separations of light molecules and gasses. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of GC as an easy and fast approach for the preliminary evaluation of the separation efficiency of porous polymers.

Combining microfluidic paper-based platform and metal-organic frameworks in a single device for phenolic content assessment in fruits

A microfluidic paper-based device (µPAD) has been combined with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for total phenolic compounds (TPC) quantification in fruit samples for the first time. The performance of the µPAD, based upon the vertical flow approach, was enhanced in order to determine the TPC content with high accuracy in fruit samples. The method was based on the traditional Folin-Ciocalteu Index using gallic acid or oenotannin as reference phenolic compounds. This novel design and construction of the device are in agreement with the principles of Green Chemistry avoiding wax technology (lower toxicity). The analytical parameters that affect the colorimetric method (using digital imaging of the colored zone) performance were optimized including design, sample volume, and MOF amount. Then, the analytical features of the developed method were investigated such as dynamic range (1.6-30 mg L^-1), limit of detection (0.5 mg L^-1), and precision (RSD < 9%). Besides, the in-field analysis is achievable with a color stability up to 6 h after the loading process of the sample and storage stability for at least 15 days without performance losses (under vacuum at - 20 °C). Furthermore, the MOF ZIF-8@paper was characterized to study its composition and the successful combination. The feasibility of the proposed method was demonstrated by determining the TPC in 5 fruit samples using oenotannin as reference solute. The accuracy was validated by comparison of the data with the results obtained with the recommended protocol proposed by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

Ultramicroporous iron-isonicotinate MOFs combining size-exclusion kinetics and thermodynamics for efficient CO2/N2 gas separation

Two ultramicroporous 2D and 3D iron-based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been obtained by solvothermal synthesis using different ratios and concentrations of precursors. Their reduced pore space decorated with pendant pyridine from tangling isonicotinic ligands enables the combination of size-exclusion kinetic gas separation, due to their small pores, with thermodynamic separation, resulting from the interaction of the linker with CO₂ molecules. This combined separation results in efficient materials for dynamic breakthrough gas separation with virtually infinite CO₂/N₂ selectivity in a wide operando range and with complete renewability at room temperature and ambient pressure.

One-Step Synthesis of Al-Doped UiO-66 Nanoparticle for Enhanced Removal of Organic Dyes from Wastewater

In this study, a series of Al-doped metal-organic frameworks (Al_xZr_(1-x)-UiO-66) were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N₂ sorption measurement, suggested that the Al doping was uniform and barely influenced the crystallinity, chemical stability, and thermal stability of the materials. Two cationic dyes, safranine T (ST) and methylene blue (MB), were selected for investigating the adsorption performances of Al-doped UiO-66 materials. Al_0.3Zr_0.7-UiO-66 exhibited 9.63 and 5.54 times higher adsorption capacities than UiO-66, 498 mg/g and 251 mg/g for ST and MB, respectively. The improved adsorption performance can be attributed to π-π interaction, hydrogen bond, and the coordination between the dye and Al-doped MOF. The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models explained the adsorption process well, which indicated that the dye adsorption on Al_0.3Zr_0.7-UiO-66 mostly occurred through chemisorption on homogeneous surfaces. A thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption capacity did not decrease significantly after four cycles.

One-step fabrication of hydrophobic metal-organic framework@covalent organic framework hybrid as sorbent for high-performance solid-phase extraction of flavonoids

Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) exhibit excellent extraction performance in sample pretreatment, but their wider application is hindered by some inherent drawbacks. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel MOF@COF hybrid material with large specific surface area, good chemical stability and reusability, which is suitable as a solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the efficient extraction of flavonoids. Importantly, due to the synergistic effect, the obtained MOF@COF hybrid material showing a higher extraction efficiency than individual MOF and COF. This is mainly due to the obtained MOF@COF hybrid material combines the high specific surface area of MOF and multiple interactions (hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction) with flavonoids conferred by the COF structure. Then, a sensitive analytical method for flavonoids with ideal linear range (1-500 ng mL^-1), low detection limit (0.15-0.41 ng mL^-1) and good repeatability (2.64-6.20%) was developed under optimized conditions. In addition, the MOF@COF hybrid sorbent has better selectivity for hydrophobic targets containing multiple hydrogen bond acceptors/donors. Finally, the established method was applied to the determination of flavonoids in different food samples, and satisfactory recoveries (81.4-102.1%) were obtained, which initially confirmed its applicability.

Biomedically-relevant metal organic framework-hydrogel composites

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are incredibly versatile three-dimensional porous materials with a wide range of applications that arise from their well-defined coordination structures, high surface areas and porosities, as well as ease of structural tunability due to diverse compositions achievable. In recent years, following advances in synthetic strategies, development of water-stable MOFs and surface functionalisation techniques, these porous materials have found increasing biomedical applications. In particular, the combination of MOFs with polymeric hydrogels creates a class of new composite materials that marries the high water content, tissue mimicry and biocompatibility of hydrogels with the inherent structural tunability of MOFs in various biomedical contexts. Additionally, the MOF-hydrogel composites can transcend each individual component such as by providing added stimuli-responsiveness, enhancing mechanical properties and improving the release profile of loaded drugs. In this review, we discuss the recent key advances in the design and applications of MOF-hydrogel composite materials. Following a summary of their synthetic methodologies and characterisation, we discuss the state-of-the-art in MOF-hydrogels for biomedical use - cases including drug delivery, sensing, wound treatment and biocatalysis. Through these examples, we aim to demonstrate the immense potential of MOF-hydrogel composites for biomedical applications, whilst inspiring further innovations in this exciting field.

Novel strategies for the formulation and processing of aluminum metal-organic framework-based sensing systems toward environmental monitoring of metal ions

Aluminum is a relatively inexpensive and abundant metal for the mass production of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Aluminum-based MOFs (Al-MOFs) have drawn a good deal of research interest due to their unique properties for diverse applications (e.g., excellent chemical and structural stability). This review has been organized to highlight the current progress achieved in the synthesis/functionalization of Al-MOF materials with the special emphasis on their sensing application, especially toward metal ion pollutants in the liquid phase. To learn more about the utility of Al-MOF-based sensing systems, their performances have been evaluated for diverse metallic components in reference to many other types of sensing systems (in terms of the key quality assurance (QA) criteria such as limit of detection (LOD)). Finally, the challenges and outlook for Al-MOF-based sensing systems are discussed to help expand their real-world applications.

Recent advances in fluorescence chemosensors for ammonia sensing in the solution and vapor phases

Developing low-cost and reliable sensor systems for the detection of trace amounts of toxic gases is an important area of research. Ammonia (NH₃) is a commonly produced industrial chemical and a harmful colorless pungent gas released from various manufacturing and processing industries. Continuous exposure to NH₃ vapor causes serious menace to human health, microorganisms, and the ecosystem. Exposure to relatively higher concentrations of NH₃ severely affects the respiratory system and leads to kidney failure, nasal erosion ulcers, and gastrointestinal diseases. Excessive accumulation of NH₃ in the biosphere can cause various metabolic disruptions. As a consequence of this, therefore, suitable sensing methods for selective detection and quantification of trace amounts of NH₃ are of utmost need to protect the environment and living systems. Given this, there have been significant research advances in the preceding years on the development of fluorescence chemosensors for efficient sensing and monitoring of the trace concentration of NH₃ both in solution and vapor phases. This review article highlights several fluorescence chemosensors reported until recently for sensing and quantifying NH₃ in the vapor phase or ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) in the solution phase. The wide variety of fluorescence chemosensors discussed in this article are systematically gathered according to their structures, functional properties, and fluorescence sensing properties. Finally, the usefulness and existing challenges of using the fluorescence-based sensing method for NH₃ detection and the future perspective on this research area have also been highlighted.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Colloidal Particle Synthesis, Assembly, and Application

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from metal nodes and organic ligands have received significant attention over the past two decades for their fascinating porous properties and broad applications. Colloidal MOFs (CMOFs) not only inherit the intrinsic properties of MOFs, but can also serve as building blocks for self-assembly to make functional materials. Compared to bulk MOFs, the colloidal size of CMOFs facilitates further manipulation of CMOF particles in a single or collective state in a liquid medium. The resulting crystalline order obtained by self-assembly in position and orientation can effectively improve performance. In this review, we summarize the latest developments of CMOFs in synthesis strategies, self-assembly methods, and related applications. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities of CMOFs in synthesis and assembly, by which we hope that CMOFs can be further developed into new areas for a wider range of applications.

Carbon Capture Materials in Post-Combustion: Adsorption and Absorption-Based Processes

Global warming and climate changes are among the biggest modern-day environmental problems, the main factor causing these problems is the greenhouse gas effect. The increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulted in capturing increased amounts of reflected sunlight, causing serious acute and chronic environmental problems. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached 421 ppm in 2022 as compared to 280 in the 1800s, this increase is attributed to the increased carbon dioxide emissions from the industrial revolution. The release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere can be minimized by practicing carbon capture utilization and storage methods. Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) has four major methods, namely, pre-combustion, post-combustion, oxyfuel combustion, and direct air capture. It has been reported that applying CCUS can capture up to 95% of the produced carbon dioxide in running power plants. However, a reported cost penalty and efficiency decrease hinder the wide applicability of CCUS. Advancements in the CCSU were made in increasing the efficiency and decreasing the cost of the sorbents. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in utilizing both physical and chemical sorbents to capture carbon. This includes amine-based sorbents, blended absorbents, ionic liquids, metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents, zeolites, mesoporous silica materials, alkali-metal adsorbents, carbonaceous materials, and metal oxide/metal oxide-based materials. In addition, a comparison between recently proposed kinetic and thermodynamic models was also introduced. It was concluded from the published studies that amine-based sorbents are considered assuperior carbon-capturing materials, which is attributed to their high stability, multifunctionality, rapid capture, and ability to achieve large sorption capacities. However, more work must be done to reduce their cost as it can be regarded as their main drawback.

Structural Properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks at Elevated Thermal Conditions via a Combined Density Functional Tight Binding Molecular Dynamics (DFTB MD) Approach

The performance of different density functional tight binding (DFTB) methods for the description of six increasingly complex metal-organic framework (MOF) compounds have been assessed. In particular the self-consistent charge density functional tight binding (SCC DFTB) approach utilizing the 3ob and matsci parameter sets have been considered for a set of four Zn-based and two Al-based MOF systems. Moreover, the extended tight binding for geometries, frequencies, and noncovalent interactions (GFN2-xTB) approach has been considered as well. In addition to the application of energy minimizations of the respective unit cells, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at constant temperature and pressure conditions (298.15 K, 1.013 bar) have been carried out to assess the performance of the different DFTB methods at nonzero thermal conditions. In order to obtain the XRD patterns from the MD simulations, a flexible workflow to obtain time-averaged XRD patterns from (in this study 5000) individual snapshots taken at regular intervals over the simulation trajectory has been applied. In addition, the comparison of pair-distribution functions (PDFs) directly accessible from the simulation data shows very good agreement with experimental reference data obtained via measurements employing synchrotron radiation in case of MOF-5. The comparison of the lattice constants and the associated X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns with the experimental reference data demonstrate, that the SCC DFTB approach provides a highly efficient and accurate description of the target systems.

Vapochromic effect in switchable molecular-based spin crossover compounds

Coordination complexes based on transition metal ions displaying [Ar]3d⁴-3d⁷ electronic configurations can undergo the likely most spectacular switchable phenomena found in molecular coordination chemistry, the well-known Spin Crossover (SCO). SCO phenomena is a detectable, reproducible and reversible switch that occurs between the high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) electronic states of the transition metal actuated by different stimuli (i.e. light, temperature, pressure, the presence of an analyte). Moreover, the occurrence of SCO phenomena causes different outputs, one of them being a colour change. Altogether, an analyte in gas form could be detected by naked eye once it has triggered the corresponding HS ↔ LS transition. This vapochromic effect could be used to detect volatile molecules using a low-cost technology, including harmful chemical substances, gases and/or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are present in our environment, in our home or at our workplace. The present review condenses all reported iron coordination compounds where the colour change induced by a given molecule in its gas form is coupled to a HS ↔ LS spin transition. Special emphasis has been made on describing the nature of the post-synthetic modification (PSM) taking place in the material upon the analyte uptake. In this case, three types of PSM can be distinguished: based on supramolecular contacts and/or leading to a coordinative or covalent bond. In the latter, a colour change not only indicates the switch of the spin state in the material but also the formation of a new compound with different properties. It is important to indicate that some of the SCO coordination compounds discussed in the current report have been part of other spin crossover reviews, that have gathered thermally induced SCO compounds and the influence of guest molecules on the SCO behaviour. However, in the majority of examples in these reviews, the change of colour upon the uptake of analytes is not associated with a spin transition at room temperature. In addition, the observed colour variations have been mainly discussed in terms of host-guest interactions, when they can also be induced by a PSM taking place in different sites of the molecule, like the Fe(II) coordination sphere or by chemically altering its inorganic and/or organic linkers. Therefore, we present here for the first time an exhaustive compilation of all systems in which the interaction between the coordination compounds and the vapour analytes leads to a colour change due to a spin transition in the metal centre at room temperature.

Combination of Enzymes with Materials to Give Them Antimicrobial Features: Modern Trends and Perspectives

Multidrug-resistant bacteria form serious problems in many areas, including medicine and the food industry. At the same time, great interest is shown in the transfer or enhancement of antimicrobial properties to various materials by modifying them with enzymes. The use of enzymes in biomaterials with antimicrobial properties is important because enzymes can be used as the main active components providing antimicrobial properties of functionalized composite biomaterials, or can serve as enhancers of the antimicrobial action of certain substances (antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides, metal nanoparticles, etc.) against cells of various microorganisms. Enzymes can simultaneously widen the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of biomaterials. This review presents the most promising enzymes recently used for the production of antibacterial materials, namely hydrolases and oxidoreductases. Computer modeling plays an important role in finding the most effective combinations between enzymes and antimicrobial compounds, revealing their possible interactions. The range of materials that can be functionalized using enzymes looks diverse. The physicochemical characteristics and functionalization methods of the materials have a significant impact on the activity of enzymes. In this context, fibrous materials are of particular interest. The purpose of this review is to analyze the current state of the art in this area.

Enhanced sorption in an indium-acetylenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework with unexpected chains of cis-μ-OH-connected {InO6} octahedra

Single crystals of the new metal-organic framework (MOF) In-adc (HHUD-4) were obtained through the reaction of linear acetylenedicarboxylic acid (H₂adc) with In(NO₃)₃·xH₂O as a racemic conglomerate in the chiral tetragonal space groups P4₃22 and P4₁22. Fundamentally different from other MOFs with linear linkers and trans-μ-OH-connected infinite {MO₆} secondary building units as in the MIL-53-type, the linear adc^2- linker leads to the formation of cis-μ-OH connected {InO₆} polyhedra, which have otherwise only been found before for V-shaped ligands, as in CAU-10-H. A far-reaching implication of this finding is the possibility that trans-μ-OH/straight MIL-53-type MOFs will have polymorphs of CAU-10-H cis-μ-OH/helical topology and vice versa. HHUD-4 is a microporous MOF with a BET surface area of up to 940 m² g^-1 and a micropore volume of up to 0.39 cm³ g^-1. Additionally, HHUD-4 features good adsorption uptakes of 3.77 mmol g^-1 for CO₂ and 1.25 mmol g^-1 for CH₄ at 273 K and 1 bar, respectively, and a high isosteric heat of adsorption of 11.4 kJ mol^-1 for H₂ with a maximum uptake of 6.36 mmol g^-1 at 77 K and 1 bar. Vapor sorption experiments for water and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, cyclohexane and n-hexane yielded uptake values of 135, 269, 116 and 205 mg g^-1, respectively, at 293 K. While HHUD-4 showed unremarkable results for water uptake and low stability for water, it exhibited good stability with steep VOC uptake steps at low relative pressures and a high selectivity of 17 for benzene/cyclohexane mixtures.

Preparation, Characterization, and Wound Healing Assessment of Curcumin-Loaded M-MOF (M = Cu, Zn)@Polycaprolactone Nanocomposite Sponges

The fabrication of multifunctional scaffolds has attracted much attention in biological fields. In this research, some novel composites of Cu(II) or Zn(II) metal-organic framework (M-MOF) and polycaprolactone (PCL), M-MOF@PCL, have been fabricated as multifunctional scaffolds for application in the tissue engineering (TE) field. The porous three-dimensional sponges were prepared by the salt leaching method. Then, the M-MOF@PCL composite sponges have been prepared by in situ synthesis of M-MOF in the presence of the as-obtained PCL sponge to gain a new compound with proper features for biological applications. Finally, curcumin was attached to the M-MOF@PCL as a bioactive compound that can act as a wound-healing agent, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory. The presence of the M-MOF in final composites was investigated by different methods such as FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared), XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscope), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), and TEM (transmission electron microscope). SEM images confirmed the porous structure of the as-obtained composites. According to the EDS and TEM images, M-MOFs were uniformly incorporated throughout the PCL sponges. The water sorption capacities of the blank PCL, Cu-MOF@PCL, and Zn-MOF@PCL were determined as 56%, 155%, and 119%, respectively. In vivo investigation on a third-degree burn model in adult male Wistar rats exhibited an accelerated wound healing for Cu-MOF@PCL compared to with Zn-MOF@PCL and the control group.

A Zn(II)-Metal-Organic Framework Based on 4-(4-Carboxy phenoxy) Phthalate Acid as Luminescent Sensor for Detection of Acetone and Tetracycline

As hazardous environmental pollutants, residual tetracycline (TC) and acetone are harmful to the ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the presence of these pollutants in the environment. In this work, using Zn (II) salt, 4-(4-carboxy phenoxy) phthalic acid (H₃L), and 3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl) pyridine (BMP), a new metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) known as [Zn₃(BMP)₂L₂(H₂O)₄]·2H₂O was synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method. The Zn-MOF has a three-dimensional framework based on the [Zn1N₂O₂] and [Zn2N₂O₄] nodes linked by a tridentate bridge BMP ligand and an L ligand with the μ₁:η¹η⁰/μ₁:η¹η⁰/μ₀:η⁰η⁰ coordination mode. There were two kinds of left- and right-handed helix chains, Zn1-BMP and Zn1-BMP-Zn1-L. The complex was stable in aqueous solutions with pH values of 4-10. The Zn-MOF exhibited a strong emission band centered at 385 nm owing to the π*→π electron transition of the ligand. It showed high luminescence in some common organic solvents as well as in the aqueous solutions of pH 4-10. Interestingly, TC and acetone effectively quenched the luminescence of the Zn-MOF in aqueous solution and enabled the Zn-MOF to be used as a sensor to detect TC and acetone. The detection limits of TC and acetone were observed to be 3.34 µM and 0.1597%, respectively. Even in acidic (pH = 4) and alkaline (pH = 10) conditions, the Zn-MOF showed a stable luminescence sensing capability to detect TC. Luminescence sensing of the Zn-MOF for TC in urine and aquaculture wastewater systems was not affected by the interfering agent. Furthermore, the mechanism of sensing TC was investigated in this study. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer and photoinduced electron transfer were found to be the possible quenching mechanisms via UV-Vis absorption spectra/the excitation spectra measurements and DFT calculations.

Construction of BiOCl/Ti-MOFs type-II heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic performance for multiple antibiotics removal

The increased threats to environmental and human health caused by the widespread use of antibiotics have increased the need for efficient technologies for removing antibiotic remnants from wastewater after production. Photocatalysis, which is non-toxic, highly efficient, and low energy consumption, has played a vital role in wastewater treatment among the aforementioned technologies. Therefore, a MIL-125(Ti)/BiOCl type-II heterojunction photocatalyst was fabricated using solvothermal method. Investigations remarkably revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst for multiple antibiotics degradation (tetracycline and ofloxacin) was attributed to the construction of a heterojunction, which inhibits carrier recombination and enhances visible-light absorption. Furthermore, the radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance determined superoxide radicals and holes to be the main species in the photocatalytic process. Finally, we presented a potential photocatalytic mechanism that could account for the observations. Overall, this study offered guidelines for developing more photocatalysts with visible-light responses and removing multiple antibiotics from water more efficiently.

Optimization and Synthesis of a La-TMA MOF with Some Improvements in Its Properties

A La-TMA metal-organic framework (MOF) made up of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate and La(III) was synthesized by a different methodology compared to those in previous reports. By using various approaches, the structural characteristics and physical properties of the La-TMA MOF were analyzed. Eventually, the results showed micro-hexagonal hollow tubes with a high crystallinity grade and thermal stability (up to 400 °C) and a higher surface area compared with those from earlier reports. The BET surface area of a similar previous MOF was about 14.8 m²/g; however, in the current project, the BET surface area increased to about 34.49 m²/g and the Langmuir surface area to 42.3 m²/g.

High-throughput platforms for microextraction techniques

The proposal of high-throughput platforms in microextraction-based approaches is important to offer sustainable and efficient tools in analytical chemistry. Particularly, automated configurations exhibit enormous potential because they provide accurate and precise results in addition to less analyst intervention. Recently, significant achievements have been obtained in proposing affordable platforms for microextraction techniques capable of being integrated with different analytical instrumentations. Considering the evolution of these approaches, this article describes innovative high-throughput platforms that have recently been proposed for the analysis of varied matrices, with special attention to laboratory-made devices. Additionally, some challenges, opportunities, and trends regarding these experimental workflows are pointed out.

Quasi-Cu-MOFs: highly improved water stability and electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 reduction among pristine 3D MOFs

QHKUST-1 calcined at 250 °C for 1 h maintains the perfect octahedral morphology of HKUST-1 and exhibits superior moisture stability and enhanced electrocatalytic activity compared to the original water-sensitive HKUST-1.
