Abstract
Mesoporous high-surface-area activated carbon (MHSA-AC), which has a honeycomb structure, was produced from coconut shells by simultaneous chemical and physical activation and used for the rapid adsorption of an anionic dye, namely acid orange 10 (AO10), from water. Owing to its porosity and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (2283.91 m2g-1), MHSA-AC is a highly efficient adsorbent. It also has good biocompatibility and is a good immobilization carrier; the grooves on the MHSA-AC surface facilitate immobilization. Here, a new, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation (SAB) process was developed. Highly concentrated AO10 (6000 mg L-1, 20 mL) was removed with an efficiency of 100% (pH = 7, 35 °C) by SAB using cells immobilized on MHSA-AC (500 mg). The immobilized cells were used directly, without pretreatment; the SAB process is therefore simple and has good potential for application in the treatment of dyes in industrial wastewater.

Abstract
In this study, the white-rot fungus Cyathus bulleri was cultivated on low-cost agro-residues, namely wheat bran (WB), wheat straw (WS), and domestic waste orange peel (OP) for production of ligninolytic enzymes. Of the three substrates, WB and OP served as good materials for the production of laccase with no requirement of additional carbon or nitrogen source. Specific laccase activity of 94.4 U mg-1 extracellular protein and 21.01 U mg-1 protein was obtained on WB and OP, respectively. Maximum decolorization rate of 13.6 μmol h-1 U-1 laccase for reactive black 5 and 22.68 μmol h-1 U-1 laccase for reactive orange 16 (RO) was obtained with the WB culture filtrate, and 11.7 μmol h-1 U-1 laccase for reactive violet 5 was observed with OP culture filtrate. Importantly, Kiton blue A (KB), reported not to be amenable to enzymatic degradation, was degraded by culture filtrate borne activities. Products of degradation of KB and RO were identified by mass spectrometry, and a pathway of degradation proposed. WB-grown culture filtrate decolorized and detoxified real and simulated textile effluents by about 40%. The study highlights the use of inexpensive materials for the production of enzymes effective on dyes and effluents.

Abstract
This study has applied the concept of the hybrid PAC-UF process in the treatment of the final effluent of the palm oil industry for reuse as feedwater for low-pressure boilers. In a bench-scale set-up, a low-cost empty fruit bunch-based powdered activated carbon (PAC) was employed for upstream adsorption of biotreated palm oil mill effluent (BPOME) with the process conditions: 60 g/L dose of PAC, 68 min of mixing time and 200 rpm of mixing speed, to reduce the feedwater strength, alleviate probable fouling of the membranes and thus improve the process flux (productivity). Three polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes of molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 1, 5 and 10 kDa were investigated in a cross-flow filtration mode, and under constant transmembrane pressures of 40, 80, and 120 kPa. The permeate qualities of the hybrid processes were evaluated, and it was found that the integrated process with the 1 kDa MWCO UF membrane yielded the best water quality that falls within the US EPA reuse standard for boiler-feed and cooling water. It was also observed that the permeate quality is fit for extended reuse as process water in the cement, petroleum and coal industries. In addition, the hybrid system's operation consumed 37.13 Wh m-3 of energy at the highest applied pressure of 120 kPa, which is far lesser than the typical energy requirement range (0.8-1.0 kWh m-3) for such wastewater reclamation.

Abstract
Porous BiOBr/Bi2MoO6 (Br/Mo) heterostructures were designed and successfully fabricated, in which BiOBr nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of the secondary nanoplate of three-dimensional porous Bi2MoO6 architectures through a deposition-precipitation process. The as-prepared Br/Mo heterostructures were used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The batch adsorption results indicated that 50.0 wt % Br/Mo heterostructures show an enhanced adsorption capacity compared with pure Bi2MoO6 and BiOBr. The effects of initial solution, initial concentration, and contact time were systematically investigated. The optimum adsorbent amount and the pH value were determined to be 0.8 g L-1 and 2, respectively. Meanwhile, the experiments also revealed that porous Br/Mo heterostructures possess higher preferential adsorptivity for MB than that for methyl orange (MO-) and rhodamine B (RhB+). The dynamic experimental result indicated that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Weber's intraparticle diffusion model indicated that two steps took place during the adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis results showed that the adsorption is a physisorption process, which conforms to the Langmuir isotherm model. Additionally, the possible adsorption mechanism was also investigated. The present study implied that Br/Mo heterostructures are promising candidates as adsorbents for MB removal. Therefore, fabrication of semiconductor-based heterostructures could be a strategy to design new efficient adsorbents for the removal of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
Generation of secondary sludge is a major concern of textile dye removal by coagulation process. Combinatorial coagulation-biodegradation treatment system has been found efficient in degradation of coagulated textile dye sludge. Moringa oleifera seed powder (700 mg L-1) was able to coagulate textile dyestuff from real textile wastewater with 98 % color removal. Novel consortium-BBA was found to decolorize coagulated dye sludge. Parameters that significantly affect coagulation process were optimized using response surface methodology. The bench-scale stirred tank reactor (50-L capacity) designed with optimized parameters for coagulation process could efficiently remove 98, 89, 78, and 67 % of American Dye Manufacturer's Institute (ADMI) in four repetitive cycles, respectively. Solid-state fermentation composting reactor designed to treat coagulated dye sludge showed 96 % removal of dye within 10 days. Coagulation of dyes from textile wastewater and degradation of coagulated dye sludge were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Cell morphology assay, comet assay, and phytotoxicity confirmed the formation of less toxic products after coagulation and degradation mechanism.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the overall performance of a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) system integrated with nanofiltration (NF) for wastewater reclamation. It was found that the trans-membrane pressure of SMBR increased continuously while that of the SMBR with PAC was more stable, mainly because water could still pass through the PACs and membrane even though foulants adhered on the PAC surface. The presence of PAC was able to mitigate fouling in SMBR as well as in NF. SMBR-NF with PAC obtained a higher flux of 8.1 LMH compared to that without PAC (6.6 LMH). In addition, better permeate quality was obtained with SMBR-NF integrated process added with PAC. The present results suggest that the addition of PAC in integrated SMBR-NF process could possibly lead to satisfying water quality and can be operated for a long-term duration.

Abstract
Dye sludge generation is major drawback of coagulation process. Efficient hybrid technology by combining coagulation and solid state fermentation (SSF) has capacity to solve generated dye sludge problem. Coagulation of 100mg/L Reactive Red 120 (RR120) using ZnCl2 showed 99% color removal. Mixture of textile dyes (MTD) and textile wastewater (TW) showed 96% and 98% ADMI (American Dye Manufacturing Institute) removal after coagulation by ZnCl2. 92% and 94% ADMI removal from MTD and TW dye sludge and 96% decolorization of RR120 sludge was observed respectively by developed microbial consortium (DCM) in 72h under SSF. Scale up of coagulation process by coagulation reactor (CR) having 50L capacity operated for 30min/cycle. CR showed average 94% ADMI removal from TW in 10 successive cycles. Scale up of SSF composting bioreactor (CB) showed complete dye removal from dye sludge obtained from CR (500L of TW) in 30days.

Abstract
A novel branched polyamine (polyethyleneimine, PEI) functionalized mesoporous silica (MS) adsorbent is developed via a facile "grafting-to" approach. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy verified the effective surface functionalization of MS with monolayer and polymer. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to reveal the morphology of the fabricated materials. The adsorption behavior of the polyamine functionalized mesoporous silica (MS-PEI) is assessed against anionic dyes. The adsorbent characteristics of MS-PEI are compared with a monolayer platform comprising of 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APTES) functionalized mesoporous silica (MS-APTES). The adsorption behavior of the MS-PEI and MS-APTES toward anionic dyes is further evaluated by studying the effect of adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, and temperature. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models are employed to understand the adsorption mechanism. The obtained kinetic data support a pseudo-second-order adsorption behavior for both monolayer and polymer functionalized MS. The associated thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) reveal that the process of adsorption with MS-PEI is more spontaneous and energetically favored as compared to the adsorption with MS-APTES. Taken together, the novel adsorbent system derived from a combination of MS and branched polymer (MS-PEI) shows the higher absorption efficiency and capacity toward the anionic dyes than the monolayer based adsorbent (MS-APTES).

Abstract
This work presents the preliminary study of new carbonaceous materials (CMs) obtained from exhausted sludge, their use in the heterogeneous anaerobic process of biodecolorization of azo dyes and the comparison of their performance with one commercial active carbon. The preparation of carbonaceous materials was conducted through chemical activation and carbonization. Chemical activation was carried out through impregnation of sludge-exhausted materials with ZnCl2 and the activation by means of carbonization at different temperatures (400, 600 and 800°C). Their physicochemical and surface characteristics were also investigated. Sludge based carbonaceous (SBC) materials SBC400, SBC600 and SBC800 present values of 13.0, 111.3 and 202.0m(2)/g of surface area. Biodecolorization levels of 76% were achieved for SBC600 and 86% for SBC800 at space time (τ) of 1.0min, similar to that obtained with commercial activated carbons in the continuous anaerobic up-flow packed bed reactor (UPBR). The experimental data fit well to the first order kinetic model and equilibrium data are well represented by the Langmuir isotherm model. Carbonaceous materials show high level of biodecolorization even at very short space times. Results indicate that carbonaceous materials prepared from sludge-exhausted materials have outstanding textural properties and significant degradation capacity for treating textile effluents.

Abstract
We report a facile and rapid (less than 15 min) synthesis of atomically precise, dithiol-protected, silver quantum cluster, Ag7(DMSA)4 (DMSA: meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid), through a modified solid state route. The as-synthesized cluster exhibits molecular optical absorption features with a prominent λmax at ~500 nm. Composition of the cluster was confirmed using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Clusters supported on neutral alumina have been shown as better adsorbents for selective adsorption of cationic dyes (over anionic dyes) from water. This selectivity for cationic dyes was evaluated by zeta potential (ζ) measurements. The efficiency of clusters for removal of dyes is very high when compared to nanoparticles (NPs) protected with ligands (citrate and mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA)) possessing similar chemical structures as that of DMSA. The higher efficiency of clusters for the removal of dyes is attributed to their smaller size and large surface area compared to the NPs in addition to favorable electrostatic interactions between the clusters and cationic dyes. Adsorption of dyes (cationic and anionic) was enhanced when dye molecules contain hydrogen bond forming functional groups. Supported clusters have been reused up to five cycles without the loss of activity once the adsorbed dye is extracted using suitable solvents.

Abstract
During the last decade, several physico-chemical and biological techniques have been developed to remove colour from textile wastewaters. Some of these techniques rely on and many will profit from activated carbon (AC). The role of AC is versatile: (1) it acts as a dye adsorbent, not only in straightforward adsorption processes but also in AC-enhanced coagulation and membrane filtration processes; (2) it generates strong oxidising agents (mostly, hydroxyl (OH) radicals) in electrochemical dye oxidation; (3) it catalyses OH production in advanced oxidation processes; (4) it catalyses anaerobic (azo) dye reduction and supports biofilm growth in microbial dye removal. This paper reviews the role of AC in dye decolourisation, evaluates the feasibility of each AC-amended decolourisation technique and discusses perspectives on future research.

Abstract
A cationic organic flocculant epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine (EPI-DMA) was employed for the treatment of acid and direct dye. The study aims at investigating the flocculation performance of EPI-DMA for the model dye, and corresponding floc aggregation properties, which were determined by jar test and photometric dispersion analysis, respectively. The interactions between cationic flocculant and anionic dye were investigated through spectra analysis. The results showed that EPI-DMA effectively decolorized the tested acid and direct dye. The viscosity and cationicity of EPI-DMA had different influence on the removal of different dye. Chemical interaction was observed between quaternary ammonium of EPI-DMA and sulfonic group of dye. The flocculation dynamic process showed that flocs with better aggregation and sedimentation properties were produced by EPI-DMA with higher viscosity and cationicity for acid dye. Contrarily, flocs with the best aggregation and sedimentation properties were produced by EPI-DMA with the lowest viscosity and cationicity for direct dye.

Abstract
A chitin hydrogel with concentration 3 wt% (CG3) was successfully prepared from chitin solution dissolved in 8 wt% NaOH/4 wt% urea aqueous system at low temperature by crosslinking with 5 wt% epichlorohydrin. The experimental results revealed that CG3 exhibited high efficiency to remove dye (malachite green) from aqueous solution, as a result of their microporous structure, large surface area and affinity on the dye. The equilibrium process was described well by the Langmuir isotherm model, showing a monolayer adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the overall rate of dye uptake could be controlled by external mass transfer at the beginning of adsorption, while intraparticle diffusion controlled the overall rate of adsorption at a later stage. The activation energy calculated from Arrhenius equation and the result of SEM and FTIR indicated that the adsorption of malachite green on the CG3 was physical process. This work provided an attractive adsorbent for removing of the hazardous materials from wastewater.

Abstract
Activated (AC-PW) and non-activated (C-PW) carbonaceous materials were prepared from the Brazilian-pine fruit shell (Araucaria angustifolia) and tested as adsorbents for the removal of reactive orange 16 dye (RO-16) from aqueous effluents. The effects of shaking time, adsorbent dosage and pH on the adsorption capacity were studied. RO-16 uptake was favorable at pH values ranging from 2.0 to 3.0 and from 2.0 to 7.0 for C-PW and AC-PW, respectively. The contact time required to obtain the equilibrium using C-PW and AC-PW as adsorbents was 5 and 4h at 298 K, respectively. The fractionary-order kinetic model provided the best fit to experimental data compared with other models. Equilibrium data were better fit to the Sips isotherm model using C-PW and AC-PW as adsorbents. The enthalpy and entropy of adsorption of RO-16 were obtained from adsorption experiments ranging from 298 to 323 K.

Abstract
A versatile and robust adsorbent with both magnetic property and very high adsorption capacity is presented on the basis of functionalization of iron oxide-silica magnetic particles with carboxylic hyperbranched polyglycerol (Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/HPG-COOH). The structure of the resulting product was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta-potential, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the TGA results, the density of the carboxylic groups on the surface of Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/HPG-COOH is calculated to be as high as 3.0 mmol/g, posing a powerful base for adsorbing dyes and drugs. Five kinds of dyes and one representative anticancer drug were chosen to investigate the adsorption capacity of the as-prepared magnetic adsorbent. The adsorbent shows highly efficient adsorption performance for all of the adsorbates especially for the cationic dyes and drug. For example, the saturated adsorption capacity of the Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/HPG-COOH for methyl violet (MV) can reach 0.60 mmol/g, which is much higher than the previous magnetic adsorbents (usually lower than 0.30 mmol/g). 95% of MV and 90% of R6G could be adsorbed within 5 min, and both of the adsorptions reached equilibrium in about 15 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm of the adsorbents were investigated in detail and found that the kinetic and equilibrium adsorptions are well-modeled using pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. In addition, the influences of pH and ionic strength on the adsorption capacity were also examined and found that pH has much greater effect on the adsorption capacity compared with the ionic strength. Regeneration experiments showed that the Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/HPG-COOH can be well-regenerated in ethanol and partially regenerated in 1 M HCl aqueous solution. After regeneration, the magnetic adsorbents can still show high adsorption capacity even for 10 cycles of desorption-adsorption. No obvious decreases of magnetic intensity and aggregation of adsorbents can be observed even after 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption.
