Effects of energy drink ingestion on alcohol intoxication

BACKGROUND

Well-known reports suggest that the use of energy drinks might reduce the intensity of the depressant effects of alcohol. However, there is little scientific evidence to support this hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS

The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of the simultaneous ingestion of an alcohol (vodka(37.5%v/v)) and an energy drink (Red Bull-3.57 mL/kg), compared with those presented after the ingestion of an alcohol or an energy drink alone. Twenty-six young healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to 2 groups that received 0.6 or 1.0 g/kg alcohol, respectively. They all completed 3 experimental sessions in random order, 7 days apart: alcohol alone, energy drink alone, or alcohol plus energy drink. We evaluated the volunteers' breath alcohol concentration, subjective sensations of intoxication, objective effects on their motor coordination, and visual reaction time.

RESULTS

When compared with the ingestion of alcohol alone, the ingestion of alcohol plus energy drink significantly reduced subjects' perception of headache, weakness, dry mouth, and impairment of motor coordination. However, the ingestion of the energy drink did not significantly reduce the deficits caused by alcohol on objective motor coordination and visual reaction time. The ingestion of the energy drink did not alter the breath alcohol concentration in either group.

CONCLUSIONS

Even though the subjective perceptions of some symptoms of alcohol intoxication were less intense after the combined ingestion of the alcohol plus energy drink, these effects were not detected in objective measures of motor coordination and visual reaction time, as well as on the breath alcohol concentration.

Sugar-dependent rats show enhanced intake of unsweetened ethanol

Rats show signs of dependence on sugar when it is available intermittently, including bingeing, withdrawal, and cross-sensitization with amphetamine. In the current study, we sought to determine whether sugar-dependent rats would show increased intake of unsweetened ethanol and, conversely, whether intermittent access to ethanol would augment sugar consumption. In Experiment 1, with intermittent versus ad libitum access to ethanol, Sprague-Dawley rats were given escalating concentrations of ethanol (1%, 2%, 4%, 7%, and 9%) over the course of 20 days. Rats in the intermittent ethanol access group, with 12-h daily access, consumed more 4%, 7%, and 9% ethanol during the first hour of access, and more 9% ethanol daily, than did rats in the ad libitum ethanol access group. In Experiment 2, with ethanol as a gateway to sugar intake, the rats from Experiment 1 were switched to 10% sucrose with 12-h daily access for 1 week. Rats in the intermittent ethanol access group consumed significantly more sugar than was consumed by rats in a control group with no prior ethanol experience. In Experiment 3, with sugar as a gateway to ethanol to determine whether sugar dependence leads to increased ethanol intake, four groups were maintained for 21 days according to the following designations: intermittent access to sugar and chow, ad libitum access to sugar and chow, intermittent access to chow, or ad libitum access to chow. Four days later, all groups were switched to intermittent ethanol access, as described in Experiment 1. The group with intermittent access to sugar and chow consumed the most 9% ethanol, supporting the suggestion that sugar dependence alters a rat's proclivity to drink ethanol. These results may relate to the co-morbidity between binge-eating disorders and alcohol intake and the tendency of people abstaining from alcohol to consume excessive amounts of sugar. In conclusion, bingeing on either ethanol or sugar fosters intake of the other.

Does an Energy Drink Modify the Effects of Alcohol in a Maximal Effort Test?

BACKGROUND

There are popular reports on the combined use of alcohol and energy drinks (such as Red Bull and similar beverages, which contain caffeine, taurine, carbohydrates, etc.) to reduce the depressant effects of alcohol on central nervous system, but no controlled studies have been performed. The main purpose of this study was to verify the effects of alcohol, and alcohol combined with energy drink, on the performance of volunteers in a maximal effort test (cycle ergometer) and also on physiological indicators (oxygen uptake, ventilatory threshold, respiratory exchange rate, heart rate, and blood pressure), biochemical variables (glucose, lactate, insulin, cortisol, ACTH, dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline), and blood alcohol levels.

METHODS

Fourteen healthy subjects completed a double-blind protocol made up of four sessions: control (water), alcohol (1.0 g/kg), energy drink (3.57 ml/kg Red Bull), and alcohol + energy drink, each 1 week apart. The effort test began 60 min after drug or control ingestion, and the dependent variables were measured until 60 min after the test.

RESULTS

Heart rate at the ventilatory threshold was higher in the alcohol and alcohol + energy drink sessions in comparison with control and energy drink sessions. Although in comparison to the control session, the peak oxygen uptake was 5.0% smaller after alcohol ingestion, 1.4% smaller after energy drink, and 2.7% smaller after the combined ingestion, no significant differences were detected. Lactate levels (30 min after drug ingestion, 30 and 60 min after the effort test) and noradrenaline levels (30 min after the effort test) were higher in the alcohol and alcohol + energy drink sessions compared with the control session.

CONCLUSIONS

The performance in the maximal effort test observed after alcohol + energy drink ingestion was similar to that observed after alcohol only. No significant differences between alcohol and alcohol + energy drink were detected in the physiological and biochemical parameters analyzed. Our findings suggest that energy drinks, at least in the tested doses, did not improve performance or reduce alterations induced by acute alcohol ingestion.

Use of caffeine-based products and tobacco in relation to the consumption of alcohol. An examination of putative relationships in a group of alcoholics in Israel

The relations between the intake of alcohol and that of caffeinated beverages, as well as cigarette smoking, was examined in a group of chronic alcoholics in an Israeli treatment center. When data from the total sample was analyzed, relationships between alcohol and caffeinated beverages intake and between alcohol intake and smoking were observed. Caffeine use and smoking were also related. In addition, a subgroup of subjects with a family history of alcoholism revealed correlations between alcohol and caffeine consumption, between alcohol intake and smoking, as well as caffeine use and smoking. Subjects without a family history of alcoholism also showed relationships between alcohol and caffeine use and smoking. However, coffee intake and tobacco use was not related in this subgroup. The relevance of the findings to previous reports concerning alcohol drinking and smoking as well as the intake of coffee appear to be consistent with a notion of interaction between these respective behaviors occurring at a behavioral level rather than a genetic one.

Augmentation of corticosterone release by means of a caffeine-ethanol interaction in rats

We examined whether the acute treatment with caffeine delivered before an ethanol injection would augment plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels. The effect of caffeine on blood ethanol levels was also assessed. After 10 days of acclimatization to the colony room conditions, male Wistar rats were injected with either caffeine (5 mg/kg, ip) or saline 30 min before the delivery of ethanol (0.8 g/kg, ip) or saline, respectively. Trunk blood was then collected at 15 and 30 min after the ethanol injection for determination of plasma CORT and blood ethanol levels. CORT was measured with the use of radioimmunoassay, and blood ethanol levels were determined with the use of gas chromatography. The results showed that although caffeine and ethanol delivered singly failed to augment plasma CORT levels, the combination of both drugs produced elevations in plasma CORT levels at 15 and 30 min. These findings were found to be unrelated to changes in ethanol metabolism as caffeine failed to alter blood ethanol levels within the period tested. It was argued that the present elevations in plasma CORT levels observed in animals administered caffeine and ethanol may play a role in the caffeine-induced elevations in ethanol drinking observed elsewhere.
