Abstract
Organocatalysts for polymerization have known a huge interest over the last two decades. Among them, heterocyclic nitrogen bases are widely used to catalyse the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of heterocycles such as cyclic carbonates. We have investigated the ring-opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) catalysed by DMAP (4-dimethylaminopyridine) and TBD (1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene) as case studies in the presence of methanol as co-initiator by Density Functional Theory (DFT). A dual mechanism based on H-bond activation of the carbonyl moieties of the monomer and a basic activation of the alcohol co-initiator has been shown to occur more preferentially than a direct nucleophilic attack of the carbonate monomer by the heterocyclic nitrogen catalyst. The rate-determining step of the mechanism is the ring opening of the TMC molecule, which is slightly higher than the nucleophilic attack of the TMC carbonyl by the activated alcohol. The calculations also indicate TBD as a more efficient catalyst than DMAP. The higher energy barrier found for DMAP vs. TBD, 23.7 vs. 11.3 kcal·mol−1, is corroborated experimentally showing a higher reactivity for the latter.

Abstract
As a biodegradable elastomer, poly(1,8-octanediol-co-citrate) (POC) has been widely applied in tissue engineering and implantable electronics. However, the unclear degradation mechanism has posed a great challenge for the better application and development of POC. To reveal the degradation mechanism, here, we present a systematic investigation into in vivo and in vitro degradation behaviors of POC. Initially, critical factors, including chemical structures, hydrophilic and water-absorbency characteristics, and degradation reaction of POC, are investigated. Then, various degradation-induced changes during in vitro degradation of POC-x (POC with different cross-linking densities) are monitored and discussed. The results show that (1) cross-linking densities exponentially drop with degradation time; (2) mass loss and PBS-absorption ratio grow nonlinearly; (3) the morphology on the cross-section changes from flat to rough at a microscopic level; (4) the cubic samples keep swelling until they collapse into fragments from a macro view; and (5) the mechanical properties experience a sharp drop at the beginning of degradation. Finally, the in vivo degradation behaviors of POC-x are investigated, and the results are similar to those in vitro. The comprehensive assessment suggests that the in vitro and in vivo degradation of POC occurs primarily through bulk erosion. Inflammation responses triggered by the degradation of POC-x are comparable to poly(lactic acid), or even less obvious. In addition, the mechanical evaluation of POC in the simulated application environment is first proposed and conducted in this work for a more appropriate application. The degradation mechanism of POC revealed will greatly promote the further development and application of POC-based materials in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Long-term presence of M1 macrophages causes serious foreign body reaction (FBR), which is the main reason for the failure of biological scaffold integration. Inducing M2 polarization of macrophages near scaffolds to reduce foreign body response has been widely researched. In this work, inspired by the special capability of tumor exosomes in macrophages M2 polarization, we integrate tumor-derived exosomes into biological scaffolds to minimize the FBR. In brief, breast cancer cell-derived exosomes are loaded into polycaprolactone-b-polyethylene glycol-b-polycaprolactone (PCL-PEG-PCL) fiber scaffold through physical adsorption and entrapment to constructed bioactive engineered scaffold. In cellular experiments, we demonstrate bioactive engineered scaffold based on PCL-PEG-PCL and exosomes can promote the transformation of macrophages from M1 to M2 through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. In addition, the exosomes release gradually from scaffolds and act on the macrophages around the scaffolds to reduce FBR in a subcutaneous implant mouse model. Compared with PCL-PEG-PCL scaffolds without exosomes, bioactive engineered scaffolds reduce significantly inflammation and fibrosis of tissues around the scaffolds. Therefore, cancer cell-derived exosomes show the potential for constructing engineered scaffolds in inhibiting the excessive inflammation and facilitating tissue formation.

Abstract
Zinc and its alloys are the best candidates for biodegradable cardiovascular stents due to their good corrosion rate and biocompatibility in vasculature. However, the cytotoxicity caused by the rapid release of zinc ions during the initial degradation stage and the lack of an anticoagulant function are huge challenges for their practical clinical applications. In this work, we developed a zinc ion-crosslinked polycarbonate/heparin composite coating via electrophoretic deposition (EPD) to improve the biocompatibility and provide anticoagulant functions for Zn-alloy stents. Both electrochemical tests and in vitro immersion tests demonstrated an enhanced corrosion resistance and lower Zn ion release rate of the coated Zn alloys. Enhanced adhesion and proliferation of endothelial cells on coated Zn alloys were also observed, indicating faster reendothelialization than that on bare Zn alloys. Moreover, the surface erosion of the composite coating led to the uniform and long-term release of heparin, which remarkably inhibited the adhesion and activation of platelets, and may have endowed the coated Zn-alloy stents with long-term anticoagulant functions.

Abstract
Herein, N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) are utilized as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of functional aliphatic carbonates. This emerging class of catalysts provides high reactivity and rapid conversion. Aiming for the polymerization of monomers with high side chain functionality, six-membered carbonates derived from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (bis-MPA) served as model compounds. Tuning the reactivity of NHO from predominant side chain transesterification at room temperature toward ring-opening at lowered temperatures (-40 °C) enables controlled ROP. These refined conditions give narrowly distributed polymers of the hydrophobic carbonate 5-methyl-5-benzyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one (MTC-OBn) (Đ < 1.30) at (pseudo)first-order kinetic polymerization progression. End group definition of these polymers demonstrated by mass spectrometry underlines the absence of side reactions. For the active ester monomer 5-methyl-5-pentafluorophenyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxane-2-one (MTC-PFP) with elevated side chain reactivity, a cocatalysis system consisting of NHO and the Lewis acid magnesium iodide is required to retune the reactivity from side chains toward controlled ROP. Excellent definition of the products (Đ < 1.30) and mass spectrometry data demonstrate the feasibility of this cocatalyst approach, since MTC-PFP has thus far only been polymerized successfully using acidic catalysts with moderate control. The broad feasibility of our findings was further demonstrated by the synthesis of block copolymers for bioapplications and their successful nanoparticular assembly. High tolerability of NHO in vitro with concentrations ranging up to 400 μM (equivalent to 0.056 mg/mL) further emphasize the suitability as a catalyst for the synthesis of bioapplicable materials. The polycarbonate block copolymer mPEG44-b-poly(MTC-OBn) enables physical entrapment of hydrophobic dyes in sub-20 nm micelles, whereas the active ester block copolymer mPEG44-b-poly(MTC-PFP) is postfunctionalizable by covalent dye attachment. Both block copolymers thereby serve as platforms for physical or covalent modification of nanocarriers for drug delivery.

Abstract
A new catalytic route has been developed for the coupling of epoxides and CO2 affording polymerizable six-membered bicyclic carbonates. Cyclic epoxides equipped with a β-positioned OH group can be transformed into structurally diverse bicyclic cyclic carbonates in good yields and with high selectivity. Key to the chemo-selectivity is the difference between the reactivity of syn- and anti-configured epoxy alcohols, with the latter leading to six-membered ring carbonate formation in the presence of a binary AlIII aminotriphenolate complex/DIPEA catalyst. X-ray analyses show that the conversion of the syn-configured substrate evolves via a standard double inversion pathway providing a five-membered carbonate product, whereas the anti-isomer allows for activation of the oxirane unit of the substrate opposite to the pendent alcohol. The potential use of these bicyclic products is shown in ring-opening polymerization offering access to rigid polycarbonates with improved thermal resistance.

Abstract
As a biodegradable and biocompatible biomaterial, aliphatic polycarbonates (APCs) have attracted substantial attention in terms of post-polymerization modification (PPM) for functionalization. A strategy for the introduction of sulfur(VI)-fluoride exchange (SuFEx) click chemistry into APCs for PPM is proposed for the first time in this work. 4'-(Fluorosulfonyl)benzyl 5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxane-5-carboxylate (FMC) was designed as a SuFEx clickable cyclic carbonate for APCs via ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and an operational and nontoxic synthetic route was achieved. FMC managed to undergo both ROP and PPM through the SuFEx click chemistry organocatalytically without constraining or antagonizing each other, using 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (TBD) as a co-organocatalyst here. Its ROP was systematically investigated, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the acid-base catalytic mechanism in the anionic ROP. Exploratory investigations into PPM by SuFEx of poly(FMC) were conducted as biomaterials, and the one-pot strategies to achieve both ROP and SuFEx were confirmed.

Abstract
The dual-initiator technique allows the polymerization of different monomers from orthogonal polymerization mechanisms to obtain block copolymers (BCPs). In this study, it is attempted to combine photoiniferter living free radical polymerization and organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) to design a hydroxyl-functionalized carbamodithioate, i.e., 4-(hydroxymethyl)benzyl diethylcarbamodithioate (HBDC), which can integrate photoiniferter polymerization of acrylamide monomers and ROP of cyclic carbonates. As a proof of concept, the monomer applicability is further extended to acrylates and lactones. The results confirm that the two polymerization systems are experimentally compatible in a stepwise sequence as well as in a simultaneous one-pot process to synthesize BCPs. It is reasonable to assume that HBDC can allow for simple and efficient one-pot access to well-defined BCPs from a larger range of monomers, which is more advantageous from the operational, economical, and environmental points of view.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide is a renewable, inexhaustible, and cheap alternative to fossil resources for the production of fine chemicals and plastics. It can notably be converted into exovinylene cyclic carbonates, unique synthons gaining momentum for the preparation of an impressive range of important organic molecules and functional polymers, in reactions proceeding with 100 % atom economy under mild operating conditions in most cases. This Review summarizes the recent advances in their synthesis with particular attention on describing the catalysts needed for their preparation and discussing the unique reactivity of these CO2 -based heterocycles for the construction of diverse organic building blocks and (functional) polymers. We also discuss the challenges and the future perspectives in the field.

Abstract
The development of innovative synthetic polymer systems to overcome the trade-offs between the polymer's depolymerizability and performance properties is in high demand for advanced material applications and sustainable development. In this contribution, we prepared a class of aromatic cyclic esters (M1-M5) from thiosalicylic acid and epoxides by facile one-pot synthesis. Ring-opening polymerization of Ms afforded aromatic polyesters P(M)s with high molecular weights and narrow dispersities. The physical and mechanical properties of P(M)s can be modulated by stereocomplexation and regulation of the side-chain flexibility of the polymers, ultimately achieving high-performance properties such as high thermal stability and crystallinity (Tm up to 209 °C), as well as polyolefin-like high mechanical strength, ductility, and toughness. Furthermore, the functionalizable moieties of P(M)s have driven a wide array of post-polymerization modifications toward access to value-added materials. More importantly, the P(M)s were able to selectively depolymerize into monomers in excellent yields, thus establishing its circular life cycle.

Abstract
A novel manganese metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF) termed UAEU-50 assembled from a benzenedicarboxylate linker (BDC) and trinuclear manganese clusters was synthesized and fully characterized using different spectroscopic and analytic techniques (e.g., X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). UAEU-50 adopted a hexagonal layer structure and exhibited superior thermal stability and robust chemical stability. Photocatalytic activities of UAEU-50 were investigated using the cycloaddition of CO2 to different epoxides, forming cyclic carbonates. Impressively, UAEU-50 can transform up to 90% photocatalytic CO2 conversion to cyclic carbonates in the visible-light region at ambient conditions.

Abstract
It is very interesting to synthesize high value-added chemicals from CO2 under mild conditions with low energy consumption. Here, we report that a novel catalyst, Zn(betaine)2Br2, can efficiently promote the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides to synthesize cyclic carbonates under ambient conditions (30 °C, 1 atm). DFT calculations provide important insights into the mechanism, particularly the unusual synergistic catalytic action of Zn2+, Br- and NR4+, which is the critical factor for the outstanding performance of Zn(betaine)2Br2. The unique features of the catalyst are that it is cheap, green and very easy to prepare.

Abstract
Monomer design plays an important role in the development of polymers with desired thermal properties and chemical recyclability. Here we prepared a class of seven-membered ring carbonates containing trans-cyclohexyl fused rings. These monomers showed excellent activity for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) with turnover frequency (TOF) up to 6 × 105 h-1 and catalyst loading down to 50 ppm, which yielded high-molecular-weight polycarbonates (Mn up to 673 kg/mol) with great thermostability (Td > 300 °C). Ultimately, the resulting polycarbonates can completely depolymerize into their corresponding cyclic dimers that can repolymerize to synthesize the starting polymers in moderate yields, demonstrating a potential route to achieve chemical recycling. Postfunctionalization of the unsaturated polycarbonate was conducted through cross-linking reaction and "click" reaction under UV irradiation.

Abstract
The lack of selectivity between tumor and healthy cells, along with inefficient reactive oxygen species production in solid tumors, are two major impediments to the development of anticancer Ru complexes. The development of photoinduced combination therapy based on biodegradable polymers that can be light activated in the "therapeutic window" would be beneficial for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of Ru complexes. Herein, a biodegradable Ru-containing polymer (poly(DCARu)) is developed, in which two different therapeutics (the drug and the Ru complex) are rationally integrated and then conjugated to a diblock copolymer (MPEG-b-PMCC) containing hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) and cyano-functionalized polycarbonate with good degradability and biocompatibility. The polymer self-assembles into micelles with high drug loading capacity, which can be efficiently internalized into tumor cells. Red light induces the generation of singlet oxygen and the release of anticancer drug-Ru complex conjugates from poly(DCARu) micelles, hence inhibiting tumor cell growth. Furthermore, the phototherapy of polymer micelles demonstrates remarkable inhibition of tumor growth in vivo. Meanwhile, polymer micelles exhibit good biocompatibility with blood and healthy tissues, which opens up opportunities for multitherapeutic agent delivery and enhanced phototherapy.

Abstract
Two well-known low-ceiling-temperature (LCT) monomers, γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL) toward ring-opening polymerization (ROP) to polyester and cyclohexene toward ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to poly(cyclic olefin), are notoriously "nonpolymerizable". Here we present a strategy to render not only polymerizability of both the γ-BL and cyclohexene sites, orthogonally, but also complete and orthogonal depolymerization, through creating an LCT/LCT hybrid, bicyclic lactone/olefin (BiL=). This hybrid monomer undergoes orthogonal polymerization between ROP and ROMP, depending on the catalyst employed, affording two totally different classes of polymeric materials from this single monomer: polyester P(BiL=)ROP via ROP and functionalized poly(cyclic olefin) P(BiL=)ROMP via ROMP. Intriguingly, both P(BiL=)ROP and P(BiL=)ROMP are thermally robust but chemically recyclable under mild conditions (25-40 °C), in the presence of a catalyst, to recover cleanly the same monomer via chain unzipping and scission, respectively. In the ROP, topological and stereochemical controls have been achieved and the structures characterized. Furthermore, the intact functional group during the orthogonal polymerization (i.e., the double bond in ROP and the lactone in ROMP) is utilized for postfunctionalization for tuning materials' thermal and mechanical performances. The impressive depolymerization orthogonality further endows selective depolymerization of both the ROP/ROMP copolymer and the physical blend composites into the same starting monomer.
