Abstract
Herein, we report an efficient synthetic method for polysubstituted pentafulvenes via palladium-catalyzed deacetylative [2+2+1] annulation of enones with alkynes. Aryl-, alkenyl-, and alkyl-substituted α,β-enones were suitable substrates, affording the pentafulvene products in moderate to good yields. This protocol shows excellent compatibility with sensitive halides, free hydroxyl groups, and heterocycles. One-pot gram-scale synthesis and further applications in the late-stage modification of natural products demonstrate the synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract
A metal-free oxidative decarboxylation reaction of propiolic acids mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents is described. This decarboxylative C-O bond-forming reaction used a combination of (diacetoxyiodo)benzene and aromatic, heteroaromatic or aliphatic propiolic acids to give the corresponding α-acetoxy ketones. Preliminary mechanistic studies based on both DFT calculations and high-resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS) suggested that the reaction proceeded through decarboxylation to form a propargyl iodide intermediate. This reaction provides an attractive alternative to existing methods for the exclusive synthesis of α-acyloxy ketones.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed decarboxylative elimination reaction of (hetero)aromatic propionic acids to vinyl (hetero)arenes has been developed. This method furnishes alkenes from carboxylic acids without the need for stochiometric Pb or Ag additives or expensive or specialized photocatalysts. A series of mechanistic experiments indicate that the reaction proceeds via benzylic deprotonation and subsequent radical decarboxylation; a pathway that is distinct from the single-electron-transfer mechanisms implicated in related decarboxylative elimination reactions.

Abstract
The development of an efficient and straightforward method for decarboxylative coupling using common alkyl carboxylic acid is of great value. However, decarboxylative coupling with nucleophiles always needs stoichiometric chemical oxidants or substrate prefunctionalization. Herein, we report a protocol for Cu-catalyzed enantioselective decarboxylative cyanation via the merger of photocatalysis and electrochemistry. CeCl3 and Cu/BOX were used as co-catalysts to promote the decarboxylation and cyanation, and both catalysts were regenerated via anodic oxidation. This method establishes a proof of concept enantioselective transformation via photoelectrocatalysis. Studies by DFT calculations provided mechanistic insight on enantioselectivity control.

Abstract
Decarboxylative protonation is a general deletion tactic to replace polar carboxylic acid groups with hydrogen or its isotope. Current methods rely on the pre-activation of acids, non-sustainable hydrogen sources, and/or expensive/highly oxidizing photocatalysts, presenting challenges to their wide adoption. Here we show that a cooperative iron/thiol catalyst system can readily achieve this transformation, hydrodecarboxylating a wide range of activated and unactivated carboxylic acids and overcoming scope limitations in previous direct methods. The reaction is readily scaled in batch configuration and can be directly performed in deuterated solvent to afford high yields of d-incorporated products with excellent isotope incorporation efficiency; characteristics not attainable in previous photocatalyzed approaches. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate a radical mechanism and kinetic results of unactivated acids (KIE=1) are consistent with a light-limited reaction.

Abstract
In contrast to the rapid growth of electrophotocatalysis in recent years, enantioselective catalytic reactions powered by this unique methodology remain rare. In this work, we report an electrophotochemical metal-catalyzed protocol for direct asymmetric decarboxylative cyanation of aliphatic carboxylic acids. The synergistic merging of electrophotochemical cerium catalysis and asymmetric electrochemical copper catalysis permits mild reaction conditions for the formation and utilization of the key carbon centered radicals by combining the power of light and electrical energy. Electrophotochemical cerium catalysis enables radical decarboxylation to produce alkyl radicals, which could be effectively intercepted by asymmetric electrochemical copper catalysis for the construction of C-CN bonds in a highly stereoselective fashion. This environmentally benign method smoothly converts a diverse array of arylacetic acids into the corresponding alkyl nitriles in good yields and enantioselectivities without using chemical oxidants or pre-functionalization of the acid substrates and can be readily scaled up.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed successive activation and functionalization of arene/heteroarene is one of the most fundamental transformations in organic synthesis and leads to privileged scaffolds in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fine chemicals. Particularly, transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization of arenes with carbene precursors via metal carbene migratory insertion has been well studied. As a result, diverse carbene precursors have been evaluated, such as diazo compounds, sulfoxonium ylides, triazoles, etc. In addition, there have been significant developments with the use of iodonium ylides as carbene precursors in recent years, and these reactions proceed with high efficiencies and selectivities. This review provides a comprehensive overview of iodonium ylides in C-H functionalizations, including the scope, limitations, and their potential synthetic applications.

Abstract
AbstractDuring the past few years, electrochemical oxidative reactions through radical intermediates have emerged as an environmentally-benign, powerful platform for the facile formation of C–E (E = C, N, S, Se, O and Hal) bonds through single-electron-transfer (SET) processes at the electrodes. Functionalized unsaturated molecules and unusual structural motifs can, for instance, be directly constructed under exceedingly mild reaction conditions through initial radical attack onto alkynes. This minireview highlights the recent advances in electrooxidation in radical reactions until June 2022, with a particular focus on radical additions onto alkynes.

Abstract
The development of palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling methods for the activation of C(sp2)-Br bonds facilitated access to arene-rich molecules, enabling a concomitant increase in the prevalence of this structural motif in drug molecules in recent decades. Today, there is a growing appreciation of the value of incorporating saturated C(sp3)-rich scaffolds into pharmaceutically active molecules as a means to achieve improved solubility and physiological stability, providing the impetus to develop new coupling strategies to access these challenging motifs in the most straightforward way possible. As an alternative to classical two-electron chemistry, redox chemistry can enable access to elusive transformations, most recently, by interfacing abundant first-row transition-metal catalysis with photoredox catalysis. As such, the functionalization of ubiquitous and versatile functional handles such as (aliphatic) carboxylic acids via metallaphotoredox catalysis has emerged as a valuable field of research over the past eight years. In this Account, we will outline recent progress in the development of methodologies that employ aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic carboxylic acids as adaptive functional groups. Whereas recent decarboxylative functionalization methodologies often necessitate preactivated aliphatic carboxylic acids in the form of redox-active esters or as ligands for hypervalent iodine reagents, methods that enable the direct use of the native carboxylic acid functionality are highly desired and have been accomplished through metallaphotoredox protocols. As such, we found that bench-stable aliphatic carboxylic acids can undergo diverse transformations, such as alkylation, arylation, amination, and trifluoromethylation, by leveraging metallaphotoredox catalysis with prevalent first-row transition metals such as nickel and copper. Likewise, abundant aryl carboxylic acids are now able to undergo halogenation and borylation, enabling new entry points for traditional, primarily palladium- or copper-catalyzed cross-coupling strategies. Given the breadth of the functional group tolerance of the employed reaction conditions, the late-stage functionalization of abundant carboxylic acids toward desired targets has become a standard tool in reaction design, enabling the synthesis of various diversified drug molecules. The rapid rise of this field has positively inspired pharmaceutical discovery and will be further accelerated by novel reaction development. The achievement of generality through reaction optimization campaigns allows for future breakthroughs that can render protocols more reliable and applicable for industry. This article is intended to highlight, in particular, (i) the employment of aliphatic and (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids as powerful late-stage adaptive functional handles in drug discovery and (ii) the need for the further development of still-elusive and selective transformations. We strongly believe that access to native functionalities such as carboxylic acids as adaptive handles will further inspire researchers across the world to investigate new methodologies for complex molecular targets.

Abstract
Sulfoximines are synthetically important scaffolds and serve important roles in drug discovery. Currently, there is no solution to decarboxylative sulfoximination of benzoic acids; although thoroughly investigated, limited substrate scope and harsh reaction conditions still hold back traditional thermal aromatic decarboxylative functionalization. Herein, we realize the first decarboxylative sulfoximination of benzoic acids via photo-induced ligand to copper charge transfer (copper-LMCT)-enabled decarboxylative carbometalation. The transformation proceeds under mild reaction conditions, has a broad substrate scope, and can be applied to late-stage functionalization of complex small molecules.

Abstract
The preparation of high value-added boronic acids from cheap and plentiful carboxylic acids is desirable. To date, the decarboxylative borylation of carboxylic acids is generally realized through the extra step synthesized redox-active ester intermediate or in situ generated carboxylic acid covalent derivatives above 150 °C reaction temperature. Here, we report a direct decarboxylative borylation method of carboxylic acids enabled by visible-light catalysis and that does not require any extra stoichiometric additives or synthesis steps. This operationally simple process produces CO2 and proceeds under mild reaction conditions, in terms of high step economy and good functional group compatibility. A guanidine-based biomimetic active decarboxylative mechanism is proposed and rationalized by mechanistic studies. The methodology reported herein should see broad application extending beyond borylation.

Abstract
An efficient and inexpensive protocol for the direct decarboxylative fluorination of aliphatic carboxylic acids catalyzed with iron salts under visible light is presented. This new method allows the facile fluorination of a diverse array of carboxylic acids even on gram scale using a Schlenk flask without loss of efficiency. Mechanistic studies suggest that the photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer process enables the generation of the key step to generate the carboxyl radical intermediates.

A mild, selective and redox-neutral Cp*Ir(III)- and Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation of salicylaldehydes with fluorovinyl tosylates is reported. The use of monofluorovinyl tosylate favors the synthesis of C2- and C3-substitution-free chromones via C-H activation/β-F elimination/annulation, whereas difluorovinyl tosylate leads to the construction of C2-fluoroalkoxy chromones. Mild reaction conditions and good functional-group tolerance were observed. Further functionalization of the resulting chromones via halogenation, alkynylation, alkylation and hydrocyanation was successfully realized.

Abstract
Here, we describe a copper-mediated tandem decarboxylative coupling/annulation protocol of o-hydroxyaryl enaminones with 3-indoleacetic acids. A series of 3-indolmethyl-chromones were afforded in up to 97% yield. A one-pot method for 3-indolmethyl-chromones from o-hydroxy acetophenones, N, N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal, and 3-indoleacetic acids was also developed. Derivatization of the products was conducted to provide various indolmethyl-substituted pyrimidines. Moreover, a biological evaluation revealed that some compounds had anti-influenza viral activities.

Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed decarbonylative thioetherification of carboxylic acids with thiols was developed. Under the reaction conditions, benzoic acids, cinnamic acids, and benzyl carboxylic acids coupled with various thiols including both aromatic and aliphatic ones produce the corresponding thioethers in up to 99% yields. Moreover, this reaction was applicable to the modification of bioactive molecules such as 3-methylflavone-8-carboxylic acid, probenecid, and flufenamic acid, and the synthesis of acaricide chlorbenside. These results well demonstrated the potential synthetic value of this new reaction in organic synthesis.

Abstract
A new and metal-free three-component method for the synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted quinolines via the reactions of anilines, α-keto acids and alkyl lactates is reported. The reactions proceed in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid (p-TSA) and tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) to provide diverse quinoline products via the construction of new CC double, C-C single and CN double bonds without producing any organic mass-based side product. Notably, the anti-inflammatory activity of the quinolines has been investigated by measuring their ability to inhibit NO release by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced RAW264.7 cells, leading to the identification of 4i, 4t and 4x as potent anti-inflammatory compounds in vitro.

Abstract
Natural allocolchicine and analogues derived thereof a tricyclic 6-7-6-system have been found as key scaffold of various biologically relevant molecules. However, the direct preparation of the allocolchicine motif remains difficult to date. Herein, we report on an electrooxidative radical cyclization of biarylynones with various carbon- and heteroatom-centered radical precursors via a sequential radical addition/7-endo-trig/radical cyclization domino reaction. This approach provides a step-economical and strategically novel disconnection for the facile assembly of a wide range of carbocyclic 6-7-6 fused ring systems. Remarkably, the sulfonyl group on the products could be easily removed by photocatalysis at room temperature with high yields.
