Abstract
Dimers of tetracene molecules are formed inside helium nanodroplets and identified through covariance analysis of the emission directions of kinetic tetracene cations stemming from femtosecond laser-induced Coulomb explosion. Next, the dimers are aligned in either one or three dimensions under field-free conditions by a nonresonant, moderately intense laser pulse. The experimental angular covariance maps of the tetracene ions are compared to calculated covariance maps for seven different dimer conformations and found to be consistent with four of these. Additional measurements of the alignment-dependent strong-field ionization yield of the dimer narrow the possible conformations down to either a slipped-parallel or parallel-slightly rotated structure. According to our quantum chemistry calculations, these are the two most stable gas-phase conformations of the dimer and one of them is favorable for singlet fission.

Abstract
Singlet fission has emerged as a key mechanism of exciton multiplication in organic chromophores, generating two triplet excitons from a single photon. Singlet fission is typically studied in crystalline films or in isolated dimers. Here, we investigate an intermediate regime where through-space interactions mediate singlet fission and triplet pair recombination within isolated polymer chains. Specifically, we investigate how appending pentacenes to a polynorbornene backbone can lead to macromolecules that take advantage of through-space π-π interactions for fast singlet fission and rapid triplet pair dissociation. Singlet fission in these systems is affected by molecular dynamics, and triplet-triplet recombination is a geminate process where the rate of recombination scales with molecular-weight. We find that these pendent pentacene polymers yield free triplets with lifetimes that surpass those of crystalline chromophores in both solution as isolated polymers and in thin films.

Abstract
Entanglement of states is one of the most surprising and counterintuitive consequences of quantum mechanics, with potent applications in cryptography and computing. In organic semiconductor materials, one particularly significant manifestation is the spin-entangled triplet-pair state, which consists of a pair of localized triplet excitons coupled into an overall spin-0, -1, or -2 configuration. The most widely analyzed of these is the spin-0 pair, denoted 1(TT), which was initially invoked in the 1960s to explain delayed fluorescence in acene films. It is considered an essential gateway state for triplet-triplet annihilation and the reverse process, singlet fission, enabling interconversion between one singlet and two triplet excitons without any change in overall spin. This state has returned to the forefront of organic materials research in recent years, thanks both to its central role in the resurgent field of singlet fission and to its implication in a host of exotic new photophysical behaviors. Here we review the properties of triplet-pair states, from first principles to recent experimental results.

Abstract
A series of terrylene derivatives, such as monoazaterrylene (MATerry), 1,6-diazaterrylene (DiATerry) and pristine terrylene (Terry), were synthesized by changing the number of nitrogen atoms at the bay region (1 and 6 positions of the Terry core). The electrochemical measurements suggested that the first one-electron reduction and oxidation potentials became positively shifted with increasing numbers of nitrogen atoms. This agreed with the energies of the corresponding highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) states estimated by DFT methods. In contrast, the HOMO-LUMO gaps approximately remained constant. This trend is quite similar to the spectroscopic behaviors observed by absorption and fluorescence spectra. The solvent polarity-dependent spectroscopic trends of DiATerry suggested the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) characters. The evaluation of the excited-state dynamics in various solvents indicated the electronic configurational changes of the excited states relative to the ground state via the ICT. This was supported by the Lippert-Mataga plots. Finally, the reversible protonation and deprotonation processes were also observed.

Abstract
Singlet fission (SF) allows two charges to be generated from the absorption of a single photon and is, therefore, potentially transformative toward improving solar energy conversion. Key to the present study of SF is the design of pentacene dimers featuring a xanthene linker that strictly places two pentacene chromophores in a rigid arrangement and, in turn, enforces efficient, intramolecular π-overlap that mimics interactions typically found in condensed state (e.g., solids, films, etc.). Inter-chromophore communication ensures Davydov splitting, which plays an unprecedented role toward achieving SF in pentacene dimers. Transient absorption measurements document that intramolecular SF evolves upon excitation into the lower Davydov bands to form a correlated triplet pair at cryogenic temperature. At room temperature, the two spin-correlated triplets, one per pentacene moiety within the dimers, are electronically coupled to an excimer state. The presented results are transferable to a broad range of acene morphologies including aggregates, crystals, and films.

Abstract
Structurally well-defined TIPS-acetylene substituted tetracene (TIPS-BT1') and pentacene (TIPS-BP1') dimers utilizing a [2.2.1] bicyclic norbornyl bridge have been studied-primarily using time-resolved spectroscopic methods-to uncover mechanistic details about primary steps in singlet fission leading to formation of the biexcitonic 1TT state as well as decay pathways to the ground state. For TIPS-BP1' in room-temperature toluene, 1TT formation is rapid and complete, occurring in 4.4 ps. Decay to the ground state in 100 ns is the primary loss pathway for 1TT in this system. For TIPS-BT1', the 1TT is also observed to form rapidly (with a time constant of 5 ps), but in this case it occurs in concert with establishment of an excited-state equilibrium ( K ∼ 1) with the singlet exciton state S1 at an energy of 2.3 eV above the ground state. The equilibrated states survive for 36 ns and are lost to ground state through both radiative and nonradiative pathways via the S1 and nonradiative pathways via the 1TT. The rapidity of 1TT formation in TIPS-BT1' is at first glance surprising. However, our analysis suggests that the few-parameter rate constant expression of Marcus theory explains both individual and comparative findings in the set of systems, thus establishing benchmarks for diabatic coupling and reorganization energy needed for efficient 1TT formation. Finally, a comparison of TIPS-BT1' with previous results obtained for a close constitutional isomer (TIPS-BT1) differing in the placement of TIPS-acetylene side groups suggests that the magnitude of exchange interaction in the correlated triplet manifold plays a critical role dictating 1TT yield in the tetracenic systems.

Abstract
Unlike previously well-studied, acyclic pentacene oligomers, the first synthesis of a cyclic pentacene trimer with a fixed tubular conformation is reported. A short-step synthesis starting from common pentacenequinone yielded the target molecule with a 1.5 nanometer length and a subnanometer pore. Steady-state spectroscopic analyses revealed that the close proximity of the non-conjugated, three pentacene chromophores allows the nanotube to display stepwise electrochemical/chemical oxidation characteristics. Furthermore, time-resolved transient absorption measurements elucidated the generation of an excited triplet state of the nanotube, with high quantum yield reaching about 180 % through intramolecular singlet fission and a very long triplet lifetime.

Abstract
Separation of triplet excitons produced by singlet fission is crucial for efficient application of singlet fission materials. While earlier works explored the first step of singlet fission, the formation of the correlated triplet pair state, the focus of recent studies has been on understanding the second step of singlet fission, the formation of independent triplets from the correlated pair state. We present the synthesis and excited-state dynamics of meta- and para-bis(ethynyltetracenyl)benzene dimers that are analogues to the ortho-bis(ethynyltetracenyl)benzene dimer reported by our groups previously. A comparison of the excited-state properties of these dimers allows us to investigate the effects of electronic conjugation and coupling on singlet fission between the ethynyltetracene units within a dimer. In the para isomer, in which the two chromophores are conjugated, the singlet exciton yields the correlated triplet pair state, from which the triplet excitons can decouple via molecular rotations. In contrast, the meta isomer in which the two chromophores are cross-coupled predominantly relaxes via radiative decay. We also report the synthesis and excited-state dynamics of two para dimers with different bridging units joining the ethynyltetracenes. The rate of singlet fission is found to be faster in the dimer with the bridging unit that has orbitals closer in energy to that of the ethynyltetracene chromophores.

Abstract
Singlet fission (SF), a multiple exciton generation process that generates two triplet excitons after the absorption of one photon, can potentially enable more efficient solar cell designs by harvesting energy normally lost as heat. While low-bandgap conjugated polymers are highly promising candidates for efficient SF-based solar cells, few polymer materials capable of SF have been reported because the SF process in polymer chains is poorly understood. Using transient spectroscopy, we demonstrate a new, highly efficient (triplet yield of 160-200%) isoindigo-based donor-acceptor polymer and show that the triplet pairs are directly emissive and exhibit a time-dependent energy evolution. Importantly, aggregation in poor solvents and in films significantly lowers the singlet energy, suppressing triplet formation because the energy conservation criterion is no longer met. These results suggest a new design rule for developing intramolecular SF capable low-bandgap conjugated polymers, whereby inter-chain interactions must be carefully engineered.

Abstract
Exposing TIPS-pentacene in deaerated benzene to ionizing radiation generates a mixture of singlet- and triplet-excited states of the solute. The singlet undergoes radiative decay without spin conversion whereas the triplet undergoes radiationless decay on the microsecond time scale. The concentration of each species was established by dosimetry. The excited-singlet state is not observed on the nanosecond-time scale for a related fluorene-bridged bis(pentacene), but the triplet is present in high concentration. Failure to detect the excited-singlet state is attributed to fast intramolecular singlet-exciton fission (iSEF) which is found to produce two triplet species. A short-lived intermediate (τT = 145 ns) is identified as the species (T_T) having both pentacene units present as triplet states. The second transient is longer lived (τT = 7.5 μs) and is assigned to the corresponding species (T_G) with a single pentacene promoted to the triplet level. Dosimetry is used to conclude that iSEF partitions overwhelmingly in favor of T_G (70%) relative to T_T (25%). The total triplet yield from iSEF, therefore, is ca. 120% in this system, where the pentacene terminals are weakly coupled.

Abstract
Pentacene dimers bridged by a phenylene at ortho and meta positions [denoted as o-(Pc)2 and m-(Pc)2] were synthesized to examine intramolecular orientation-dependent multiexciton dynamics, especially focusing on singlet fission (SF) and recombination from correlated triplet pairs [(TT)]. Absorption and electrochemical measurements indicated strong intramolecular couplings of o-(Pc)2 relative to m-(Pc)2. Femtosecond and nanosecond TA measurements successfully demonstrated efficient SF in both dimers. In contrast, the dissociation process from the (TT) to the individual triplets [(2 × T)] was clearly observed in m-(Pc)2, which is in sharp contrast to a major recombination process in o-(Pc)2. Time-resolved electron spin resonance (TR-ESR) measurements demonstrated that the recombination and dissociation proceed from the quintet state of 5(TT) in m-(Pc)2. The rate constant of the SF was 2 orders of magnitude greater in o-(Pc)2 than that in m-(Pc)2 and was rationalized by enhanced electronic coupling between adjacent HOMOs of the Pc units.

Abstract
Singlet fission is a photophysical reaction in which a singlet excited electronic state splits into two spin-triplet states. Singlet fission was discovered more than 50 years ago, but the interest in this process has gained a lot of momentum in the past decade due to its potential as a way to boost solar cell efficiencies. This review presents and discusses the most recent advances with respect to the theoretical and computational studies on the singlet fission phenomenon. The work revisits important aspects regarding electronic states involved in the process, the evaluation of fission rates and interstate couplings, the study of the excited state dynamics in singlet fission, and the advances in the design and characterization of singlet fission compounds and materials such as molecular dimers, polymers, or extended structures. Finally, the review tries to pinpoint some aspects that need further improvement and proposes future lines of research for theoretical and computational chemists and physicists in order to further push the understanding and applicability of singlet fission.

Abstract
A set of flapping acene dimers fused with an 8π cyclooctatetraene (COT) ring showed distinct excited-state dynamics in solution. While the anthracene dimer showed a fast V-shaped-to-planar conformational change within 10 ps in the lowest excited singlet state, reminding us of extended Baird aromaticity, the tetracene dimer and the pentacene dimer underwent intramolecular singlet fission (SF) in different manners: A fast and reversible SF with a characteristic delayed fluorescence (FL), and a fast and quantitative SF, respectively. Conformational flexibility of the fused COT linkage plays an important role in these ultrafast dynamics, demonstrating the utility of the flapping molecular series as a versatile platform for designing photofunctional systems.

Abstract
Tunability of the open-shell character, charge asymmetry, and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of covalently linked (hetero)phenalenyl dimers are investigated by using the density functional theory method. By changing the molecular species X and substitution position (i, j) for the linker part, a variety of intermonomer distances R and relative alignments between the phenalenyl dimers can be realized from the geometry optimizations, resulting in a wide-range tuning of diradical character y and charge asymmetry. It is found that the static second hyperpolarizabilities along the stacking direction, γyyyy , are one-order enhanced for phenalenyl dimer systems exhibiting intermediate y, a feature that is in good agreement with the "y-γ correlation". By replacing the central carbon atoms of the phenalenyl rings with a boron or a nitrogen, we have also designed covalently linked heterophenalenyl dimers. The introduction of such a charge asymmetry to the open-shell systems, which leads to closed-shell ionic ground states, is found to further enhance the γyyyy values of the systems having longer intermonomer distance R with intermediate ionic character, that is, charge asymmetry. The present results demonstrate a promising potential of covalently linked NLO dimers with intermediate open-shell/ionic characters as a new building block of highly efficient NLO systems.

Abstract
Because of the potential for increasing solar cell efficiencies, significant effort has been spent understanding the mechanism of singlet fission. We provide a simple connectivity rule to predict whether the through-bond coupling will be stabilizing or destabilizing for the 1(TT) state in covalently linked singlet-fission chromophores. By drawing an analogy between the chemical system and a simple spin-lattice, one is able to determine the ordering of the multiexciton spin state via a generalized usage of Ovchinnikov's rule. This allows one to predict (without any computation) whether the 1(TT) multiexciton state will be bound or unbound with respect to the separated triplets in covalently linked singlet-fission dimers. To test our hypothesis, we have performed ab initio calculations on a systematic series of covalently linked singlet-fission dimers. Numerical examples are given, and the limitations of the proposed theory are explored.

Abstract
A new class of donor-acceptor heterodimers based on two singlet fission (SF)-active chromophores, i.e., pentacene (Pc) and perylenediimide (PDI), was developed to investigate the role of charge transfer (CT) state on the excitonic dynamics. The CT state is efficiently generated upon photoexcitation. However, the resulting CT state decays to different energy states depending on the energy levels of the CT state. It undergoes extremely rapid deactivation to the ground state in polar CH2Cl2, whereas it undergoes transformation to a Pc triplet in nonpolar toluene. The efficient triplet generation in toluene is not due to SF but CT-mediated intersystem crossing. In light of the energy landscape, it is suggested that the deep energy level of the CT state relative to that of the triplet pair state makes the CT state actually serve as a trap state that cannot undergoes an intramolecular singlet fission process. These results provide guidance for the design of SF materials and highlight the requisite for more widely applicable design principles.

Abstract
Covalently linked acene dimers are of interest as candidates for intramolecular singlet fission. We report many-electron calculations of the energies and wave functions of the optical singlets, the lowest triplet exciton, and the triplet-triplet biexciton, as well as the final states of excited state absorptions from these states in a family of phenyl-linked pentacene dimers. While it is difficult to distinguish the triplet and the triplet-triplet from their transient absorptions in the 500-600 nm region, by comparing theoretical transient absorption spectra against earlier and very recent experimental transient absorptions in the near- and mid-infrared, we conclude that the end product of photoexcitation in these particular bipentacenes is the bound triplet-triplet and not free triplets. We predict additional transient absorptions at even longer wavelengths, beyond 1500 nm, to the equivalent of the classic 21Ag- in linear polyenes.

Abstract
We have designed a series of pentacene dimers separated by homoconjugated or nonconjugated bridges that exhibit fast and efficient intramolecular singlet exciton fission (iSF). These materials are distinctive among reported iSF compounds because they exist in the unexplored regime of close spatial proximity but weak electronic coupling between the singlet exciton and triplet pair states. Using transient absorption spectroscopy to investigate photophysics in these molecules, we find that homoconjugated dimers display desirable excited-state dynamics, with significantly reduced recombination rates as compared to conjugated dimers with similar singlet fission rates. In addition, unlike conjugated dimers, the time constants for singlet fission are relatively insensitive to the interplanar angle between chromophores, since rotation about σ bonds negligibly affects the orbital overlap within the π-bonding network. In the nonconjugated dimer, where the iSF occurs with a time constant >10 ns, comparable to the fluorescence lifetime, we used electron spin resonance spectroscopy to unequivocally establish the formation of triplet-triplet multiexcitons and uncoupled triplet excitons through singlet fission. Together, these studies enable us to articulate the role of the conjugation motif in iSF.

Abstract
Using the density functional theory method, the crystalline packing effect on the singlet fission (SF) rate of oligorylenes, some of which are found to exhibit SF in crystal forms, is revealed by evaluating the effective electronic coupling (|Veff|), the square of which is proportional to the SF rate. The |Veff| values for terrylene and quaterrylene dimer models are investigated for a variety of slip-stacked forms. It is found that these values show similar dependences on the intermolecular packing as a function of lateral and longitudinal displacements of monomer frameworks, and that they are maximized in several configurations of one monomer slipped from another along the longitudinal axis. The present estimation method of the SF rate is also found to qualitatively explain the experimental SF rate difference between terrylene derivatives with different packing forms. Furthermore, by analyzing the effect of electronic couplings on the adiabatic electronic states related to SF, we predict several favorable molecular packings leading to a fast SF with a high triplet yield.

Abstract
When molecular dimers, crystalline films or molecular aggregates absorb a photon to produce a singlet exciton, spin-allowed singlet fission may produce two triplet excitons that can be used to generate two electron–hole pairs, leading to a predicted ∼50% enhancement in maximum solar cell performance. The singlet fission mechanism is still not well understood. Here we report on the use of time-resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to probe singlet fission in a pentacene dimer linked by a non-conjugated spacer. We observe the key intermediates in the singlet fission process, including the formation and decay of a quintet state that precedes formation of the pentacene triplet excitons. Using these combined data, we develop a single kinetic model that describes the data over seven temporal orders of magnitude both at room and cryogenic temperatures. Singlet fission is an important process occurring in solar cells, however the mechanism is not well understood. Here the authors reveal intermediates during singlet fission of a non-conjugated pentacene dimer, developing a single kinetic model to describe the data over seven temporal orders of magnitude at room and cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract
The photophysics of a norbornyl-bridged covalent tetracene (Tc) dimer BT1 and a monomer analogue Tc-e were studied in room-temperature nonpolar solvents. Notably in BT1, a Davydov-split band is observed in UV absorption, heralding interchromophore electronic interactions. Emission spectra indicate an acene-like vibronic progression mirroring the lowest-energy visible absorption. For BT1, this argues against excited-state excimer formation. Evidence of intramolecular singlet fission (SF) comes from a comparison of time-resolved emission decay signals collected for BT1 versus Tc-e in toluene. In BT1, the multiexcitonic (1)TT state is produced in 70 ns in 6% yield. A ratio of fission versus fusion rate constants provides an experimental measure of the SF reaction free energy at 52 meV in good agreement with previous calculations. The low SF yield corroborates our expectations that orbital symmetry effects on diabatic coupling for SF are important for dimers that cannot rely on more favorable thermodynamics.
