Abstract
Metal dithiolene complexes—M(dmit)2—are key building blocks for magnetic, conducting, and optical molecular materials, with singular electronic structures resulting from the mixing of the metal and dmit ligand orbitals. Their use in the design of magnetic and conducting materials is linked to the control of the unpaired electrons and their localized/delocalized nature. It has been recently found that UV–Vis light can control the spin distribution of some [Cu(dmit)2]−2 salts in a direct and reversible way. In this work, we study the optical response of these salts and the origin of the differences observed in the EPR spectra under UV–Vis irradiation by means of wave function-based quantum chemistry methods. The low-lying states of the complex have been characterized and the electronic transitions with a non-negligible oscillator strength have been identified. The population of the corresponding excited states promoted by the UV–Vis absorption produces significant changes in the spin distribution, and could explain the changes observed in the system upon illumination. The interaction between neighbor [Cu(dmit)2]−2 complexes is weakly ferromagnetic, consistent with the relative orientation of the magnetic orbitals and the crystal packing, but in disagreement with previous assignments. Our results put in evidence the complex electronic structure of the [Cu(dmit)2]−2 radical and the relevance of a multideterminantal approach for an adequate analysis of their properties.

Abstract
The single-component molecular conductor [Pt(dmdt)2] is a sought-after ambient-pressure molecular Dirac electron system, which exhibits a high temperature-insensitive conductivity and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility nearly vanishing below 120 K. First-principles DFT calculations reveal that Dirac cones emerge along the a* direction, and form Dirac nodal lines.

Abstract
Whereas low-temperature (-78 °C) reaction of the lithium dithiolene radical 1. with boron bromide gives the dibromoboron dithiolene radical 2. , the parallel reaction of 1. with (C6 H11 )2 BCl (0 °C) affords the dicyclohexylboron dithiolene radical 3. . Radicals 2. and 3. were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis, and EPR spectroscopy. The nature of these radicals was also probed computationally. Under mild conditions, 3. undergoes unexpected thiourea-mediated B-C bond activation to give zwitterion 4, which may be regarded as an anionic dithiolene-modified carbene complex of the sulfenyl cation RS+ (R=cyclohexyl).

Abstract
Gold and nickel bisdithiolene complexes with methyl and tert-butyl substituted thiophenetetrathiafulavalenedithiolate ligands (α-mtdt and α-tbtdt) were prepared and characterized. These complexes were obtained, under anaerobic conditions, as tetrabutylammonium salts. The diamagnetic gold monoanion (n-Bu4N)[Au(α-mtdt)2] (3) and nickel dianionic species (n-Bu4N)x[Ni(α-mtdt)2] (x = 1,2) (4) were similar to the related non-substituted extended thiophenic-TTF (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene) bisdithiolenes. However the introduction of the large, bulky substituent tert-butyl, led to the formation of a Au (I) dinuclear complex, (n-Bu4N)2[Au2(α-tbtdt)2] (5). The neutral methyl substituted gold and nickel complexes were easily obtained through air or iodine exposure as polycrystalline or amorphous fine powder. [Au(α-mtdt)2] (6) and [Ni(α-mtdt)2] (7) polycrystalline samples display properties of a metallic system with a room temperature electrical conductivity of 0.32 S/cm and ≈4 S/cm and a thermoelectric power of ≈5 µV/K and ≈32 µV/K, respectively. While [Au(α-mtdt)2] (6) presented a Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility typical of conducting systems, in [Ni(α-mtdt)2] (7) large magnetic susceptibilities indicative of high spin states were observed. Both electric transport properties and magnetic properties for gold and nickel [M(α-mtdt)2] are indicative that these compounds are single component molecular conductors.

Abstract
We have synthesized and characterized the mixed-ligand dimolybdenum paddlewheel complex Na[(DAniF)3Mo2(C3S5)] (Na[1]; DAniF = N,N'-di-p-anisylformamidinate, dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), which has a six-membered chelating [Mo2S2C2] ring created by equatorial coordination of the dmit (C3S5) ligand to the Mo2 unit. One-electron oxidation of Na[1] using Cp2FePF6 yields the neutral complex [(DAniF)3Mo2(C3S5)] ([1]), and removal of two electrons from Na[1] using AgBPh4 gives [(DAniF)3Mo2(C3S5)]BPh4 ([1]BPh4). In the crystal structures, [1]- and [1] present dihedral angles of 118.9 and 142.3° between the plane defined by the Mo-Mo bond vector and the dmit ligand, respectively, while DFT calculations show that in [1]+ the Mo-Mo bond and the dmit ligand are coplanar. Complex [1] is paramagnetic with a g value of 1.961 in the EPR spectrum and has a Mo-Mo bond distance of 2.133(1) Å, increased from 2.0963(9) Å for [1]-. Consistently, a broad absorption band is observed for [1] in the near-IR region, which arises from charge transfer from the dmit ligand to the cationic Mo25+ centers. Interestingly, complex [1]+ has an aromatic [Mo2S2C2] core, as evidenced by a large diamagnetic anisotropy, in addition to the coplanarity of the core structure, which shifts downfield the 1H NMR signal of the horizontal methine proton (ArN-(CH)-NAr) but upfield those of the vertical protons, relative to the methine proton resonances for the precursor ([1]-). The magnetic anisotropy (Δχ = χ⊥ - χ∥) for the [Mo2S2C2] ring in [1]+ is -105.5 ppm cgs, calculated from the McConnell equation, which is about 2-fold larger than that for benzene. The aromaticity of the [Mo2S2C2] ring is supported by theoretical studies, including single-point calculations and gauge-including atomic orbital (GIAO) NMR spectroscopic calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level. DFT calculations also show that the [Mo2S2C2] core in [1]+ possesses a set of three highest occupied and three lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals in π character, corresponding to those of benzene in symmetry, and six π electrons that conform to the Hückel 4n + 2 rule for aromaticity. Therefore, this study shows that an aromatic [Mo2S2C2] core is formed by coupling the δ orbital of the Mo≣Mo bond with the π orbital of the C═C bond through the bridging atoms (S), thus validating the equivalency in bonding functionality between δ and π orbitals.

Abstract
Among single component molecular conductors, neutral radical gold dithiolene complexes [(R-thiazdt)2 Au]. derived from the N-alkyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (R-thiazdt) ligand provide an extensive series of conducting, non-dimerized, half-filled band systems. Analogues of the known R=isopropyl (iPr) derivative were investigated here with R=NMe2 , cyclopropyl (cPr) and n-propyl (nPr), aiming at rationalizing the different solid state structures adopted by these compounds despite very closely related substituents on the heterocyclic nitrogen atom. An original crisscross organization within dimerized chains is observed with R=NMe2 , differing however from the analogous iPr derivative by a 180° rotation of the heterocyclic nitrogen substituent. On the other hand, the cyclopropyl and n-propyl substituents lead to robust, uniform, non-dimerized chains with a strongly 1 D electronic structure and a formal half-filled electronic structure. The semiconducting behaviour of these two radical complexes is characteristic of a Mott insulator, whose sensitivity to external pressure has been evaluated up to 2.5 GPa.

Abstract
Sulfurization of anionic N-heterocyclic dicarbene, [:C{[N(2,6-Pri2C6H3)]2CHCLi}]n (2), with elemental sulfur (in a 1:2 ratio) in Et2O at low temperature gives 3 by inserting two sulfur atoms into the Li-C (i.e., C2 and C4) bonds in polymeric 2. Further reaction of 3 with 2 equiv of elemental sulfur in THF affords 4• via unexpected C-H bond activation, which represents the first anionic dithiolene radical to be structurally characterized in the solid state. Alternatively, 4• may also be synthesized directly by reaction of 1 with sulfur (in a 1:4 ratio) in THF. Reaction of 4• with GeCl2·dioxane gives an anionic germanium(IV)-bis(dithiolene) complex (5). The nature of the bonding in 4• and 5 was probed by experimental and theoretical methods.

Abstract
Identifying the metal ions that optimize charge transport and charge density in metal–organic frameworks is critical for systematic improvements in the electrical conductivity in these materials.
Identifying the metal ions that optimize charge transport and charge density in metal–organic frameworks is critical for systematic improvements in the electrical conductivity in these materials. In this work, we measure the electrical conductivity and activation energy for twenty different MOFs pertaining to four distinct structural families: M2(DOBDC)(DMF)2 (M = Mg2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+); H4DOBDC = 2,5-dihydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), M2(DSBDC)(DMF)2 (M = Mn2+, Fe2+; H4DSBDC = 2,5-disulfhydrylbenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid), M2Cl2(BTDD)(DMF)2 (M = Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+; H2BTDD = bis(1H-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-b],[4′,5′-i]dibenzo[1,4]dioxin), and M(1,2,3-triazolate)2 (M = Mg2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+). This comprehensive study allows us to single-out iron as the metal ion that leads to the best electrical properties. The iron-based MOFs exhibit at least five orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity and significantly smaller charge activation energies across all different MOF families studied here and stand out materials made from all other metal ions considered here. We attribute the unique electrical properties of iron-based MOFs to the high-energy valence electrons of Fe2+ and the Fe3+/2+ mixed valency. These results reveal that incorporating Fe2+ in the charge transport pathways of MOFs and introducing mixed valency are valuable strategies for improving electrical conductivity in this important class of porous materials.

Abstract
Single-component molecular conductors can provide a variety of electronic states. We demonstrate here that the Dirac electron system emerges in a single-component molecular conductor under high pressure. First-principles density functional theory calculations revealed that Dirac cones are formed in the single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)2] (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate), which shows temperature-independent resistivity (zero-gap behavior) at 12.6 GPa. The Dirac cone formation in [Pd(dddt)2] can be understood by a tight-binding model. The Dirac points originate from the HOMO and LUMO bands, each of which is associated with different molecular layers. Overlap of these two bands provides a closed intersection at the Fermi level (Fermi line) if there is no HOMO-LUMO coupling. Two-step HOMO-LUMO couplings remove the degeneracy on the Fermi line, resulting in gap formation. The Dirac cones emerge at the points where the Fermi line intersects with a line on which the HOMO-LUMO coupling is zero.

Abstract
Metallic conduction generally requires high carrier concentration and wide bandwidth derived from strong orbital interaction between atoms or molecules. These requisites are especially important in organic compounds because a molecule is fundamentally an insulator; only multi-component salts with strong intermolecular interaction-namely, only charge transfer complexes and conducting polymers-have demonstrated intrinsic metallic behaviour. Herein we report a single-component electroactive molecule, zwitterionic tetrathiafulvalene(TTF)-extended dicarboxylate radical (TED), exhibiting metallic conduction even at low temperatures. TED exhibits d.c. conductivities of 530 S cm-1 at 300 K and 1,000 S cm-1 at 50 K with copper-like electronic properties. Spectroscopic and theoretical investigations of the carrier-generation mechanism and the electronic states of this single molecular species reveal a unique electronic structure with a spin-density gradient in the extended TTF moieties that becomes, in itself, a metallic state.

Abstract
Three transition metal coordination polymers (CPs) based on the redox-active dimethylthio-tetrathiafulvalene-bicarboxylate (L) and 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) ligands, formulated as [MnL(bpp)]n (1), [CdL(bpp)]n (2), and [Cd2L(bpp)2(H2O)(C2O4)0.5]n·n(ClO4)·n(H2O) (3), are crystallographically characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural 2-D polymers, and 3 features an unusual 3-D metal-organic framework (MOF). The 3-D MOF is constructed from tetranuclear cluster nodes built through the μ2-O bridge of the TTF ligand, which is first found for TTF coordination polymers. It is found that the channel generated by the 3-D MOF exerts a confinement effect on the formation of TTF dimers. The TTF dimers show strong intradimer interaction with partial electron transfer or charge transfer, and hence, the Cd compound 3 has relatively good photocurrent response property in comparison with that of 2-D Cd compound 2.

Abstract
The π-conjugated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) annulated ligand was introduced into a dicyanometallate for the first time, leading to the synthesis of the versatile redox-active dicyanideferrite building block [(n-Bu)4N][Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2] (H2TTFbp = N-(2-(4,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-5-(picolinamido) benzo[d][1,3]dithiol-6-yl) picol inamide). The incorporation of the new precursor with chiral MnIII Schiff-base complexes resulted in two enantiopure one-dimensional complexes, [Mn((R,R)-salphen)Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2]n (2-(RR)) and [Mn((S,S)-salphen)Fe(TTFbp)(CN)2]n (2-(SS)) (Salphen = N,N'-1,2-diphenylethylene-bis(salicylideneiminato) dianion), which were synthesized and structurally characterized. Circular dichroism (CD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra confirmed the enantiomeric nature of the optically active complexes, and structural analyses revealed the formation of neutral cyanide-bridged double chains in 2-(RR) and 2-(SS). Solution and solid state CV studies revealed the redox-active characteristics of the complexes. Antiferromagnetic couplings were detected between FeIII and MnIII centers within a chain, and a field-induced magnetic phase transition was observed (TN = 4.8 K). The introduction of electroactivity and chirality into cyanide-bridged complexes with interesting magnetic properties leads the way towards new multifunctional materials.

Abstract
Crystals of [Pd(tmdt)2] (tmdt = trimethylenetetrathiafulvalenedithiolate) were prepared in order to investigate their physical properties. The electrical resistivity of [Pd(tmdt)2] was measured on single crystals using two-probe methods and showed that the room-temperature conductivity was 100 S·cm(-1). The resistivity behaviors implied that [Pd(tmdt)2] was a semimetal at approximately room temperature and became narrow-gap semiconducting as the temperature was decreased to the lowest temperature. X-ray structural studies on small single crystals of [Pd(tmdt)2] at temperatures of 20-300 K performed using synchrotron radiation at SPring-8 showed no distinct structural change over this temperature region. However, small anomalies were observed at approximately 100 K. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra were measured over the temperature range of 2.7-301 K. The ESR intensity increased as the temperature decreased to 100 K and then decreased linearly as the temperature was further decreased to 50 K, where an abrupt decrease in the intensity was observed. To investigate the magnetic state, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were performed in the temperature range of 2.5-271 K, revealing broadening below 100 K. The NMR relaxation rate gradually increased below 100 K and formed a broad peak at approximately 50 K, followed by a gradual decrease down to the lowest temperature. These results suggest that most of the sample undergoes the antiferromagnetic transition at approximately 50 K with the magnetic ordering temperatures distributed over a wide range up to 100 K. These electric and magnetic properties of [Pd(tmdt)2] are quite different from those of the single-component molecular (semi)metals [Ni(tmdt)2] and [Pt(tmdt)2], which retain their stable metallic states down to extremely low temperatures. The experimental results and the band structure calculations at the density functional theory level showed that [Pd(tmdt)2] may be an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator with a strong electron correlation.

Abstract
While the introduction of large, bulky substituents such as tert-butyl, -SiMe3, or -Si(isopropyl)3 has been used recently to control the solid state structures and charge mobility of organic semiconductors, this crystal engineering strategy is usually avoided in molecular metals where a maximized overlap is sought. In order to investigate such steric effects in single component conductors, the ethyl group of the known [Au(Et-thiazdt)2] radical complex has been replaced by an isopropyl one to give a novel single component molecular conductor denoted [Au(iPr-thiazdt)2] (iPr-thiazdt: N-isopropyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate). It exhibits a very original stacked structure of crisscross molecules interacting laterally to give a truly three-dimensional network. This system is weakly conducting at ambient pressure (5 S·cm(-1)), and both transport and optical measurements evidence a slowly decreasing energy gap under applied pressure with a regime change around 1.5 GPa. In contrast with other conducting systems amenable to a metallic state under physical or chemical pressure, the Mott insulating state is stable here up to 4 GPa, a consequence of its peculiar electronic structure.

Abstract
The first examples of chiral single component conductors are reported. Both (S,S) and (R,R) enantiomers of 5,6-dimethyl-5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate (dm-dddt) ligand have been used to prepare anionic metal bis(dithiolene) complexes formulated as ([(n-Bu)4N][M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni), which are isostructural according to single crystal X-ray analysis. Single crystal transport measurements indicate semiconducting behavior for the anionic radical Ni complexes, with low room temperature conductivity values and high activation energies. Electrocrystallization experiments provided neutral [M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni) complexes. The neutral radical gold compounds show intermolecular S···S interactions in the solid state giving rise to layers interconnected through weak C-H···S hydrogen bonds. The most peculiar structural feature concerns a dissymmetry between the two dithiolene moieties, while the nickel counterpart is symmetric. Single crystal resistivity measurements show thermally activated behavior for the open-shell gold complexes, with room temperature conductivity values of 0.02-0.04 S·cm(-1) and activation energies strongly influenced by hydrostatic pressure. A thorough theoretical study on nickel anion radical and gold neutral radical bis(dithiolene) complexes applied to the chiral complexes [M(dm-dddt)2] (M = Au, Ni(-)) and to a series of previously reported compounds addressed the issue of symmetry versus asymmetry from an electronic coupling perspective between the two dithiolene ligands. It results that neutral gold complexes with dithiolene ligands without extended delocalization are Class II mixed-valent compounds in the Robin and Day classification, presenting an inherent tendency toward asymmetric structures, which can be however modulated by the intermolecular organization in the solid state.
