Electronic Communication through Unsaturated Hydrocarbon Bridges in Homobimetallic Organometallic Complexes

Zwitterionic Mixed Valence: Internalizing Counteranions into a Biferrocenium Framework toward Molecular Expression of Half-Cells in Quantum Cellular Automata

Realization of molecular quantum cellular automata (QCA), a promising architecture for molecular computing through current-free processes, requires improved understanding and application of mixed-valence (MV) molecules. In this report, we present an electrostatic approach to creating MV subspecies through internalizing opposite charges in close proximity to MV ionic moieties. This approach is demonstrated by unsymmetrically attaching a charge-responsive boron substituent to a well-known organometallic MV complex, biferrocenium. Guest anions (CN^- and F^- ) bind to the Lewis acidic boron center, leading to unusual blue-shifts of the intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) bands. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported example of a zwitterionic MV series in which the degree of positive charge delocalization can be varied by changing the bound anions, and serves to clarify the interplay between IVCT parameters. The key underlying factor is the variable zero-level energy difference in the MV states. This work provides new insight into imbuing MV molecules with external charge-responsiveness, a prerequisite of molecular QCA techniques.

Small anion-assisted electrochemical potential splitting in a new series of bistriarylamine derivatives: organic mixed valency across a urea bridge and zwitterionization

We report the synthesis of a new bistriarylamine series having a urea bridge and investigate its mixed-valence (MV) states by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. We found that the supporting electrolytes had unusual effects on potential splitting during electrochemical behavior, in which a smaller counteranion thermodynamically stabilized a MV cation more substantially than did a bulky one. The effects contrary to those reported in conventional MV systems were explained by zwitterionization through hydrogen bonding between the urea bridge and the counteranions, increasing the electronic interactions between two triarylamino units. Furthermore, we clarified the intervalence charge transfer characteristics of the zwitterionic MV state.

Anion and solvent dependency of the electronic coupling strength in mixed valent class II systems

The influence of the coordination and ion pairing properties of electrolyte anions on electronic coupling in cationic class II mixed valent species was studied. In order to cover a range of electronic coupling strengths within the class II regime, weakly coupled 2,5-diferrocenyl-3,4-thiadiazol, moderately coupled 2,5-diferrocenyl thiophene and strongly coupled N-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-2,5-diferrocenyl-1H-pyrrole were chosen as analytes. The electrochemical properties of these compounds were determined by cyclic and square wave voltammetry using electrolytes with varying ion pairing capabilities, such as [NBu₄][Cl], [NBu₄][PF₆] and [NBu₄][BArF] ([NBu₄][B(C₆F₅)₄]), as well as solvents with increasing dielectric constants (dichloromethane (ε_r = 8.93), acetone (ε_r = 20.56), acetonitrile (ε_r = 35.94) and propylene carbonate (ε_r = 64.92)). It is shown that the choice of electrolyte has a considerable impact on the electrostatic and the electron transfer features of the mixed valent compounds when solvents of low polarity and low relative permittivity such as dichloromethane are used. For the use of more polar solvents such as propylene carbonate the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties are almost electrolyte independent. The solvatochromic and ion-related changes in the spectroscopic properties are most pronounced for weakly coupled systems and decrease with an increase in the electron transfer coupling strength.

Charge-Separated Mixed Valency in an Unsymmetrical Acceptor-Donor-Donor Triad Based on Diarylboryl and Triarylamine Units

In this study, we report the generation of new mixed-valence (MV) subspecies with charge-separated (CS) characters from an unsymmetrical acceptor-donor-donor (A-D-D) triad. The triad was synthesized by attaching a dimesitylboryl group (A) to a D-D conjugate that consisted of triarylamine (NAr₃) units. The MV radical cation, obtained by chemical oxidation of the triad, exhibited a strong intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) absorption derived from the bis(NAr₃)^•+ moiety in the near-IR region. The charge-separated MV (CSMV) state, obtained by photoexcitation of the triad, caused a blue shift in IVCT energy in the femtosecond transient absorption spectra, reflecting a bias of positive charge distributions to the D end site. This resulted from increased electron density at the A site and restructuring of the central D site from NAr₃ to NAr₂ sites. Interestingly, any shift in the IVCT energy that was caused by the polarity of the solvent was minimal, reflecting the unique characteristics of the CSMV state. These findings represent the first detailed analysis of the CSMV state, including a comparison with conventional MV states. Therefore, this work provides new insights into counterion-free MV systems and their applications in molecular devices.

Influence of ligand substitution at the donor and acceptor center on MMCT in a cyanide-bridged mixed-valence system

A series of cyanide-bridged complexes [TpmRu(L_D)(μ-CN)Ru(L_P)Cp*][PF₆]₂ were investigated by changing the substitutions of the donor and acceptor sites to systemically tune MMCT.

Substituent Effects on the Electrochemistry and Electronic Coupling of Terphenyl-Bridged Cyclometalated Ruthenium-Amine Conjugated Complexes

Six terphenyl-bridged cyclometalated ruthenium-amine conjugated complexes 4(PF6)-9(PF6) were synthesized and studied. Three different substituents, methoxy, methyl, and chloro, were used to vary the electronic nature of the amine unit, and two terminal ligands 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) and trimethyl-4,4',4″-tricarboxylate-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Me3tctpy) were used to tune the electronic nature of the ruthenium component. All complexes, except 7(PF6) with the methoxy substituent and Me3tctpy ligand, display two well-separated redox waves in the potential range of +0.5 to +1.1 V versus Ag/AgCl. The regular electrochemical changes of these complexes help to establish the oxidation order of ruthenium and amine and hence of the direction of the electron transfer in odd-electron state. The degree of electronic coupling was estimated by analyzing the donor-to-acceptor charge transfer band in the near-infrared region obtained by oxidative spectroelectrochemical measurements. Electron paramagnetic resonance analyses and density functional theory calculations were performed on the one-electron oxidized forms to obtain information on the spin distribution of these complexes.

Diruthenium(ii)-capped oligothienylethynyl bridged highly soluble organometallic wires exhibiting long-range electronic coupling

Organometallic molecular wires with π-conjugation along their molecular backbones are of considerable interest for application in molecular-scale electronics. In this regard, thienylethynyl-based π-conjugated oligomers of three, five and seven thienylethynyl units with -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H termini have been successfully synthesized through stepwise Pd(0)/Cu(i)-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling. The corresponding highly soluble diruthenium(ii) diacetylide complexes (O1-Ru2, O3-Ru2, O5-Ru2 and O7-Ru2, respectively) have been prepared by the reaction of cis-Ru(dppe)2Cl2 and NaPF6 in DCM with the corresponding rigid rod-like thienylethynyl oligomers with one, three, five and seven thienylethynyl π-conjugated segments containing alkynyl termini (O1, O3, O5 and O7). These Ru(ii)-Cl capped diacetylide complexes have been further functionalized by incorporating a phenylacetynyl moiety to afford [Ru(ii)-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ph]-capped diacetylide organometallic wires (O1-Ru2-Ph, O3-Ru2-Ph, O5-Ru2-Ph and O7-Ru2-Ph). The photophysical properties of the highly soluble thienylethynyl-based oligomers and Ru(ii)-organometallic wires have been explored to understand their electronic properties. Electrochemical studies of the binuclear ruthenium(ii)-alkynyl complexes showed highly interesting results, revealing long-range electrochemical communication between the two remote Ru(ii) termini connected even with five and seven thienylethynyl units. DFT computational studies further support the long range electrochemical communication between the redox active metal termini through heavy participation of the thienylethynyl bridge in the corresponding mono-oxidized mixed valence species of the organometallic wire-like complexes.

Redox-Active Chiroptical Switching in Mono- and Bis-Iron Ethynylcarbo[6]helicenes Studied by Electronic and Vibrational Circular Dichroism and Resonance Raman Optical Activity

Introducing one or two alkynyl-iron moieties onto a carbo[6]helicene results in organometallic helicenes (2 a,b) that display strong chiroptical activity combined with efficient redox-triggered switching. The neutral and oxidized forms have been studied in detail by electronic and vibrational circular dichroism, as well as by Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed and spectra were assigned with the help of first-principles calculations. In particular, a recently developed method for ROA calculations under resonance conditions has been used to study the intricate resonance effects on the ROA spectrum of mono-iron ethynylhelicene 2 a.

Synthesis, structure, and photophysical and electrochemical properties of Ru(ii) complexes of arylene-vinylene terpyridyl conjugates

A series of arylene-vinylene π-conjugated terpyridyl ruthenium(ii) complexes, [Ru(PPh3)2Cl(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (1-4; tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl, where Ar = phenyl, tolyl, 1-naphthyl and 9-anthracenyl as substituents at the 4' position of tpy), have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The influence of the electronic nature of arylene groups on their photophysical and electrochemical properties has been investigated to understand the electronic interaction between the metal-organic redox centers. Furthermore, a σ-donor phenylacetylide group has been incorporated to accomplish [Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ru(PPh3)2(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (5-8) complexes by the substitution of a coordinated chloride ligand and to investigate the change in their redox and photophysical properties. DFT studies have been performed to gain an insight into their electronic properties by determining the HOMO-LUMO energy levels and frontier molecular orbitals of all the synthesized Ru(ii) complexes.

Phosphorescence Resulting from Interaction between Two Non-equivalent Metals on a Helical π-Conjugated Surface

A [7]helicene bis-ruthenium complex, with one ruthenium atom bound to the cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ring and the other coordinated to the arene ring at the edge of the helicene, was synthesized. This complex showed phosphorescence both in butyronitrile (Φ=31 %, 77 K) and in the solid state (Φ=18 %, 77 K). The two non-equivalent ruthenium metal atoms, attached to the helicene ligand, interact with each other upon photoabsorption and emission.

Achieving yellow emission by varying the donor/acceptor units in rod-shaped fluorenyl-alkynyl based π-conjugated oligomers and their binuclear gold(i) alkynyl complexes

Fluorenyl-alkynyl based π-conjugated rod-shaped oligomers bearing different central aromatic moieties and functionalizable di-alkynyl termini, such as H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH1), H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btz-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH2) and H-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btd-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-H (OH3) where Fl = 9,9-dioctylfluorene, Btz = N-hexylbenzotriazole, and Btd = benzothiadiazole, were successfully synthesized by a Pd(0) catalyzed Stille coupling protocol. Electron withdrawing benzothiadiazole and benzotriazole as strong to moderate acceptors and fluorene as the donor have been incorporated to adjust the Donor-Acceptor (D-A) strength for fine-tuning the bandgap (E_g) as well as the emission wavelength. The corresponding digold(i) σ-complexes (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM1), (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btz-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM2) and (PPh₃)Au-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Btd-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Fl-[triple bond, length as m-dash]-Au(PPh₃) (OM3) have also been prepared by a reaction of Au(PPh₃)Cl and methanolic NaOMe in DCM with the corresponding alkynyl functionalized oligomers to take advantage of the heavy-atom effect on their emissive properties. The synthesized rod-shaped π-conjugated fluorene based oligomers and their binuclear Au(i) σ-complexes have been unambiguously characterized by various spectroscopic tools such as FTIR and multinuclear NMR as well as MALDI-TOF and CHN analyses. The absorption and emission spectral studies exhibited a progressive red shift with increasing the electron withdrawing character of the central aromatic unit. The rod-like oligomers having alkynyl termini and the corresponding digold(i) complexes are found to be blue, cyan and yellow emissive, demonstrating the fine-tuning of the emission wavelength. Most importantly, the fluorene based π-conjugated yellow light emitters OH3 and OM3 are successfully achieved by varying the donor/acceptor moiety to the fluorenyl-alkynyl backbone. The digold(i) diacetylide organometallic wires exhibit phosphorescence at 77 K in degassed CH₂Cl₂ due to the efficient intersystem crossing from the S₁ to the T₁ excited state as induced by heavy atoms.

Bridged cyclometalated diruthenium complexes for fundamental electron transfer studies and multi-stage redox switching

Four bridged cyclometalated diruthenium systems are highlighted in this Frontier article, including strongly-coupled diruthenium complexes with a short phen-1,4-diyl or a planar pyren-2,7-diyl bridge, redox asymmetric diruthenium complexes characterized by different terminal ligands on the two ends, diruthenium complexes with a urea bridge that allows modulating the degree of electronic coupling, and those with a redox-active amine bridge with varying electronic structures. These complexes posess redox couples with low potentials and intense intervalence charge transfer absorptions in the near-infrared region in the one-electron-oxidized mixed-valent state. They are appealing not only for providing a platform for fundamental electron transfer studies but also as molecular materials with multi-stage redox switching properties.

Anion-regulated electronic communication in a cyclometalated diruthenium complex with a urea bridge

A combined study of electrochemical measurements, intervalence charge transfer analysis, and DFT calculations suggests that the degree of urea-mediated electronic coupling between two cyclometalated ruthenium sites is enhanced by the coordination of urea with Br^- or Cl^-via hydrogen bonding. In contrast, the redox waves of the diruthenium complex become highly irreversible in the presence of relatively strong basic anions such as H₂PO₄^-, F^-, or OAc^-. This work demonstrates that the anion-urea interaction can be employed to regulate the electronic coupling and electron transfer between redox-active sites, suggesting the potential applications of the urea-functionalized diruthenium complex in anion sensing and stimuli-responsive molecular electronics.
