Switchable Full-Color Reflective Photonic Ellipsoidal Particles

Continuous microfluidic fabrication of anisotropic microparticles for enhanced wastewater purification

Anisotropic microparticles containing functional nanomaterials have attracted growing interest due to their enhanced performance in diverse applications ranging from catalysts to environmental remediation. However, the preparation of anisotropic microparticles with highly controlled morphologies and dimensions usually suffers from a limited material choice. Here, we develop a facile strategy to continuously prepare anisotropic microparticles with their shapes changing from spherical to pear-like, maraca-like and rod-like for enhanced water decontamination. Anisotropic microparticles are produced by deforming oil-droplet templates within microfibers and then locking their shapes via thermo/photo-polymerization. The sizes and geometries of the oil-droplet templates are precisely controlled by varying the fluid flow conditions. In addition, porous spherical and rod-like microparticles are functionalized for photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants by incorporating functional TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Compared to spherical microparticles with equal volume, functionalized rod-like microparticles exhibit better performance in removal of contaminants due to their larger specific surface area, which facilitates the contact between the loaded catalysts and organic pollutants. Moreover, the magnetic rod-like microparticles can be easily recovered and reused without deterioration of catalytic performance. The proposed strategy in this study is useful for producing anisotropic microparticles with well-tailored shapes via different polymerization methods and extending their potential applications.

Molecular Weight Dependent Morphological Transitions of Bottlebrush Block Copolymer Particles: Experiments and Simulations

The molecular weights and chain rigidities of block copolymers can strongly influence their self-assembly behavior, particularly when the block copolymers are under confinement. We investigate the self-assembly of bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs) confined in evaporative emulsions with varying molecular weights. A series of symmetric BBCPs, where polystyrene (PS) and polylactide (PLA) side-chains are grafted onto a polynorbornene (PNB) backbone, are synthesized with varying degrees of polymerization of the PNB (N_PNB) ranging from 100 to 300. Morphological transitions from onion-like concentric particles to striped ellipsoids occur as the N_PNB of the BBCP increases above 200, which is also predicted from coarse-grained simulations of BBCP-containing droplets by an implicit solvent model. This transition is understood by the combined effects of (i) an elevated entropic penalty associated with bending lamella domains of large molecular weight BBCP particles and (ii) the favorable parallel alignment of the backbone chains at the free surface. Furthermore, the morphological evolutions of onion-like and ellipsoidal particles are compared. Unlike the onion-like BBCP particles, ellipsoidal BBCP particles are formed by the axial development of ring-like lamella domains on the particle surface, followed by the radial propagation into the particle center. Finally, the shape anisotropies of the ellipsoidal BBCP particles are analyzed as a function of particle size. These BBCP particles demonstrate promising potential for various applications that require tunable rheological, optical, and responsive properties.

Self-Assembled Photonic Microsensors with Strong Aggregation-Induced Emission for Ultra-Trace Quantitative Detection

Ultratrace quantitative detection based on fluorescence is highly desirable for many important applications such as environmental monitoring or disease diagnosis, which however has remained a great challenge because of limited and irregular fluorescence responses to analytes at ultralow concentrations. Herein the problem is circumvented via local enrichment and detection of analytes within a microsensor, that is, photonic porous microspheres grafted with aggregation-induced emission gens (AIEgens). The obtained microspheres exhibit dual structural and molecular functions, namely, bright structural colors and strong fluorescence. Large fluorescence quenching induced by nitrophenol compounds in an aqueous environment is observed at ultralow concentrations (10^-12-10^-8 mol/L), enabling quantitative detection at a ppb level (ng/L). This is achieved within a porous structure with good connectivity between the nanopores to improve analyte diffusion, an internal layer of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) for analyte enrichment via hydrogen bonding, and homogeneous distribution of AIEgens within the PEO layer for enhanced fluorescence quenching. The fluorescent porous microspheres can be readily obtained in a single step templated by well-ordered water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion droplets with AIE amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymers as the effective stabilizer.

Frustrated Microparticle Morphologies of a Semicrystalline Triblock Terpolymer in 3D Soft Confinement

Self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) in three-dimensional (3D) confinement of emulsion droplets has emerged as a versatile route for the formation of functional micro- and nanoparticles. While the self-assembly of amorphous coil-coil BCPs is fairly well documented, less is known about the behavior of crystalline-coil BCPs. Here, we demonstrate that confining a linear ABC triblock terpolymer with a crystallizable middle block in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions results in a range of microparticles with frustrated inner structure originating from the conflict between crystallization and curved interfaces. Polystyrene-block-polyethylene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PE-b-PMMA, S₃₂E₃₆M₃₂⁹³) in toluene droplets was subjected to different preparation protocols. If evaporation was performed well above the bulk crystallization temperature of the PE block (T_evap > T_c), S₃₂E₃₆M₃₂⁹³ first microphase-separated into microparticles with lamella morphology followed by crystallization into a variety of frustrated morphologies (e.g., bud-like, double staircase, spherocone). By evaporating at significantly lower temperatures that allow the PE block to crystallize from solution (T_evap < T_c), S₃₂E₃₆M₃₂⁹³ underwent crystallization-driven self-assembly into patchy crystalline-core micelles, followed by confinement assembly into lenticular microparticles with compartmentalized hexagonal cylinder lattices. The frequency of these frustrated morphologies depends on polymer concentration and the evaporation protocol. These results provide a preliminary understanding of the morphological behavior of semicrystalline block copolymers in 3D soft confinement and may provide alternative routes to structure multicompartment microparticles from a broader range of polymer properties.

Responsive Nanostructured Polymer Particles

Responsive polymer particles with switchable properties are of great importance for designing smart materials in various applications. Recently, the self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) and polymer blends within evaporative emulsions has led to advances in the shape-controlled synthesis of polymer particles. Despite extensive recent progress on BCP particles, the responsive shape tuning of BCP particles and their applications have received little attention. This review provides a brief overview of recent approaches to developing non-spherical polymer particles from soft evaporative emulsions based on the physical principles affecting both particle shape and inner structure. Special attention is paid to the stimuli-responsive, shape-changing nanostructured polymer particles, i.e., design of polymers and surfactant pairs, detailed experimental results, and their applications, including the state-of-the-art progress in this field. Finally, the perspectives on current challenges and future directions in this research field are presented, including the development of surfactants with higher reversibility to multiple stimuli and polymers with unique structural functionality, and diversification of polymer architectures.

Transformable Colloidal Polymer Particles with Ordered Internal Structures

Based on studies combining experiments and simulations, internally ordered colloidal particles that are able to undergo morphological transformations both in shape and internal structure are presented. The particles are prepared by emulsion solvent evaporation-induced 3D soft confined assembly of di-block copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP). Control over the solvent selectivity leads to a dramatic change in shape and internal structure for particles. Pupa-like particles of lamellar morphology are obtained when using a non-selective solvent, while patchy particles possessing a plum pudding structure formed when the solvent is selective for PS-block. More interestingly, 3D soft confined annealing drives order-order morphological transformation of the particles. The morphology of reshaped particles can be well controlled by varying the solvent selectivity, annealing time, and interfacial interaction. The experimental results can be explained based on simulations. This study can offer considerable scope for the design of new stimuli-responsive colloidal particles for potential applications in photonic crystal, drug delivery and release, sensor and smart coating, etc.

Structure and Shear Response of Janus Colloid-Polymer Mixtures in Solution

We investigate the structure and rheological properties of dilute colloid-polymer mixtures at rest and under shear via molecular simulations that take into account hydrodynamic interactions. Mixtures of amphiphilic Janus colloids (JCs) and hydrophobic/amphiphilic polymers are considered for various solvent qualities and polymer concentrations. Free polymers, small polymer droplets, and hybrid aggregates coexist in mixtures with slightly hydrophobic homopolymers. As the solvent quality worsens, all polymers aggregate into small droplets, covered and stabilized by the JCs. In mixtures with amphiphilic polymers, we observe the coexistence of free polymers, purely polymeric micelles, and hybrid aggregates. At low shear rates, all mixtures exhibit a Newtonian-like response with intrinsic shear viscosities that are up to 2 times as large as of pure suspensions of nonadsorbing colloids at the same concentration. Furthermore, the mean aggregation number increases slightly due to the flow-enhanced collision of aggregates. At larger shear rates, however, the aggregates break up, the polymers align in the flow direction, and the mixtures exhibit shear-thinning. This shear-induced breakup occurs at stronger shear compared to pure JC suspensions, indicating that the adsorbed polymers reinforce the hybrid aggregates.

Responsive Photonic Crystal Microcapsules of Block Copolymers with Enhanced Monochromaticity

Self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) has been developed as a promising approach for constructing photonic crystal (PC) microspheres for dynamic optical modulation. However, high curvature in the center of microspheres usually distorts the periodic core structure, leading to an inconsistency of photonic bandgap and poor monochromaticity of structural color. Herein, we report a simple yet robust strategy for fabricating responsive PC microcapsules of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) through self-emulsification strategy. Interestingly, the microcapsules exhibit bright structural color with significantly enhanced monochromaticity, compared to their solid counterpart, since the microcapsules have no irregular cores. The structural colors of the PC microcapsules not only exhibit a variability through binary mixing of BCPs but also show a responsiveness to pH value. As a colored microcarrier, the PC microcapsules show a potential for visualizing the pH-dependent release behavior of encapsulated hydrophilic cargos on account of pH-responsive structural color.

Angular-Independent Photonic Pigments via the Controlled Micellization of Amphiphilic Bottlebrush Block Copolymers

Photonic materials with angular-independent structural color are highly desirable because they offer the broad viewing angles required for application as colorants in paints, cosmetics, textiles, or displays. However, they are challenging to fabricate as they require isotropic nanoscale architectures with only short-range correlation. Here, porous microparticles with such a structure are produced in a single, scalable step from an amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymer. This is achieved by exploiting a novel "controlled micellization" self-assembly mechanism within an emulsified toluene-in-water droplet. By restricting water permeation through the droplet interface, the size of the pores can be precisely addressed, resulting in structurally colored pigments. Furthermore, the reflected color can be tuned to reflect across the full visible spectrum using only a single polymer (M_n  = 290 kDa) by altering the initial emulsification conditions. Such "photonic pigments" have several key advantages over their crystalline analogues, as they provide isotropic structural coloration that suppresses iridescence and improves color purity without the need for either refractive index matching or the inclusion of a broadband absorber.
