A Suite of Tetraphenylethylene-Based Discrete Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles: Controllable Structure and Stoichiometry, Aggregation-Induced Emission, and Nitroaromatics Sensing

Biotinylated platinum(ii) metallacage towards targeted cancer theranostics

A biotinylated metallacage was prepared via metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, combining fluorescence, anti-cancer and targeted properties into a single entity. The metallacage was successfully employed for targeted cell imaging and therapy, offering a platform for cancer theranostics.

Single-molecule conductance in a unique cross-conjugated tetra(aminoaryl)ethene

A 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)ethene with three paths of π-conjugation, linear-cis, linear-trans and a cross-conjugation, has been prepared. The molecule is able to bind to gold electrodes forming molecular junctions for single-molecule conductance measurements. Only two regimes of conduction are found experimentally. The modelling of the conductance allows to assign them to through-bond transmission in the linear case, while the cross-conjugated channel is further assisted by through-space transmission, partially alleviating the destructive quantum interference.

Coordination-Induced Emission from Tetraphenylethylene Units and Their Applications

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

Investigating the structure–fluorescence properties of tetraphenylethylene fused imidazole AIEgens: reversible mechanofluorochromism and polymer matrix controlled fluorescence tuning

A series of stimuli-responsive AIEgens of tetraphenylethylene (TPE) fused imidazole derivatives (1–7) were synthesized, and their substituent controlled fluorescence properties in the solid state were explored.

Fluorescent AIE-Active Materials for Two-Photon Bioimaging Applications

Fluorescence imaging has been widely used as a powerful tool for in situ and real-time visualization of important analytes and biological events in live samples with remarkably high selectivity, sensitivity, and spatial resolution. Compared with one-photon fluorescence imaging, two-photon fluorescence imaging exhibits predominant advantages of minimal photodamage to samples, deep tissue penetration, and outstanding resolution. Recently, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have become a preferred choice in two-photon fluorescence biological imaging because of its unique bright fluorescence in solid and aggregate states and strong resistance to photobleaching. In this review, we will exclusively summarize the applications of AIE-active materials in two-photon fluorescence imaging with some representative examples from four aspects: fluorescence detection, in vitro cell imaging, ex vivo tissue imaging, and in vivo vascular imaging. In addition, the current challenges and future development directions of AIE-active materials for two-photon bioimaging are briefly discussed.

Color-Tunable and ESIPT-Inspired Solid Fluorophores Based on Benzothiazole Derivatives: Aggregation-Induced Emission, Strong Solvatochromic Effect, and White Light Emission

Organic solid materials with color-tunable emissions have been extensively applied in various fields. However, a rational design and facile synthesis of an ideal fluorophore are still challenging due to the undesirable aggregation-caused quenching effect in concentrated solution and solid form. Herein, we have developed a series of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT)-derived color-tunable solid emitters by switching functional groups at the ortho-position of a hydroxyl group via formylation and an aldol condensation reaction. By tuning the electron-withdrawing ability and the π-conjugated framework introduced by the functional groups, fluorophores emit light covering the full-color range from blue to near-infrared regions with high quantum yields in their solid form and show a significant solvatochromic effect in polar solvents. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) or aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) involving fluorescence mechanism, along with their inter/intramolecular interactions in crystals, are elucidated to depict the key factors for tunable emissions and high emitting efficiency. Furthermore, high-quality white-light-emitting materials are obtained in various solvents and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films with combined fluorophores. Overall, these studies report a promising strategy for the construction of organic solid materials with color-tunable emission and shed light on methods for obtaining desirable emission efficiency.

Dissipative aggregation-induced emission behaviour of an amino-functionalized tetraphenylethene using a pH oscillator

A dissipative aggregation-induced emission (DAIE) system is successfully fabricated by coupling a stimuli-responsive AIE luminogens (AIEgens) with a pH oscillator. The novel DAIE system exhibits reversible, autonomous and sustainable AIE behaviour. Moreover, the DAIE behaviour can be regulated with the system temperature. The novel strategy will boost the development of bioinspired intelligent systems for real-world applications.

Aggregation-induced phosphorescence sensitization in two heptanuclear and decanuclear gold-silver sandwich clusters

The strategy of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) has been proven to be efficient in wide areas and has recently been adopted in the field of metal nanoclusters. However, the relationship between atomically precise clusters and AIEE is still unclear. Herein, we have successfully obtained two few-atom heterometallic gold-silver hepta-/decanuclear clusters, denoted Au6Ag and Au9Ag, and determined their structures by X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry. The nature of the Au^I⋯Ag^I interactions thereof is demonstrated through energy decomposition analysis to be far-beyond typical closed-shell metal-metal interaction dominated by dispersion interaction. Furthermore, a positive correlation has been established between the particle size of the nanoaggregates and the photoluminescence quantum yield for Au6Ag, manifesting AIEE control upon varying the stoichiometric ratio of Au : Ag in atomically-precise clusters.

Supramolecular coordination complexes as diagnostic and therapeutic agents

The metal-based drugs represented by cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin, prevail in cancer treatment, whereas new therapeutics are extremely slow to step into the clinic. Poor pharmacokinetics, multidrug resistance, and severe side effects greatly limit the development of metal-based anticancer drugs. The robustness and modular composition of supramolecular coordination complexes allow for the incorporation of novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, showing promising potentials for precise cancer theranostics. In this mini review, we highlight the recent advances in the development of supramolecular coordination complexes as diagnostic and therapeutic agents. The key focuses of these reports lie in searching sophisticated coordination ligands and nanoformulations that can potentially solve the issues faced by current metal-based drugs including imaging, resistance, toxicity, and pharmacological deficiencies.

Ratiometric Turn-On Fluorophore Displacement Ensembles for Nitroaromatic Explosives Detection

There is a recognized need in the area of explosives detection for fluorescence-based sensing systems that are capable of not only producing a turn-on response but also generating a distinctive spectral signature for a given analyte. Here, we report several supramolecular ensembles displaying efficient fluorophore displacement that give rise to an increase in fluorescence intensity upon exposure to various nitroaromatic compounds. The synthetic supramolecular constructs in question consist of a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based pyrrolic macrocycle, benzo-TTF-calix[4]pyrrole (Bz-TTF-C4P), and fluorescent dyes, monomeric or dimeric naphthalenediimide (NDI) and perylenediimide (PDI) derivatives, as well as chloride or hexafluorophosphate (PF₆^-) salts of rhodamine 6G (Rh-6G). In chloroform solution, these assemblies exist in the form of discrete supramolecular complexes or oligomeric aggregates depending on the specific dye combinations in question. Each ensemble was tested as a potential explosive-responsive fluorescence indicator displacement assay (FIDA) by challenging it with a series of di- and trinitroaromatic compounds and examining the change in fluorescence spectral characteristics. Upon addition of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), either a "turn-on" or a "turn-off" fluorescent response was observed depending on the nature of the constituent fluorophore and, where applicable, the counteranion. The FIDAs based on the PDI derivatives were found to display not only a ratiometric fluorescence enhancement but also analyte-dependent spectral changes when treated with NACs. The NAC-induced fluorescence spectral response of each ensemble was rationalized on the basis of various solution-phase spectroscopic studies, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Over one century after discovery: pyrylium salt chemistry emerging as a powerful approach for the construction of complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules

Over one century after its discovery, pyrylium salt chemistry has been extensively applied in preparing light emitters, photocatalysts, and sensitizers. In most of these studies, pyrylium salts acted as versatile precursors for the preparation of small molecules (such as furan, pyridines, phosphines, pyridinium salts, thiopyryliums and betaine dyes) and poly(pyridinium salt)s. In recent decades, pyrylium salt chemistry has emerged as a powerful approach for constructing complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules. In this perspective, we attempt to summarize the representative efforts of synthesizing and self-assembling large, complex architectures using pyrylium salt chemistry. We believe that this perspective not only highlights the recent achievements in pyrylium salt chemistry, but also inspires us to revisit this chemistry to design and construct macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules with increasing complexity and desired function.

Seeing luminescence appear as crystals crumble. Isolation and subsequent self-association of individual [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ ions in crystals

Non-luminescent, isostructural crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6)·C6H6 (E = As, Sb) lose benzene upon standing in air to produce green luminescent (E = As) or blue luminescent (E = Sb) powders. Previous studies have shown that the two-coordinate cation, [(C6H11NC)2Au]+, self-associates to form luminescent crystals that contain linear or nearly linear chains of cations and display unusual polymorphic, vapochromic, and/or thermochromic properties. Here, we report the formation of non-luminescent crystalline salts in which individual [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ ions are isolated from one another. In [(C6H11NC)2Au](BArF24) ((BArF24)- is tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) each cation is surrounded by two anions that prohibit any close approach of the gold ions. Crystallization of [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6) (E = As or Sb, but not P) from benzene solution produces colorless, non-emissive crystals of the solvates [(C6H11NC)2Au](EF6)·C6H6. These two solvates are isostructural and contain columns in which cations and benzene molecules alternate. With the benzene molecules separating the cations, the shortest distances between gold ions are 6.936(2) Å for E = As and 6.9717(19) Å for E = Sb. Upon removal from the mother liquor, these crystals crack due to the loss of benzene from the crystal and form luminescent powders. Crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](SbF6)·C6H6 that powder out form a pale yellow powder with a blue luminescence with emission spectra and powder X-ray diffraction data that show that the previously characterized [(C6H11NC)2Au](SbF6) is formed. In the process, the distances between the gold(i) ions decrease to ∼3 Å and half of the cyclohexyl groups move from an axial orientation to an equatorial one. Remarkably, when crystals of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6)·C6H6 stand in air, they lose benzene and are converted into the yellow, green-luminescent polymorph of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) rather than the colorless, blue-luminescent polymorph. Paradoxically, the yellow, green-luminescent powder that forms as well as authentic crystals of the yellow, green-luminescent polymorph of [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) are sensitive to benzene vapor and are converted by exposure to benzene vapor into the colorless, blue-luminescent polymorph.

The Covalent and Coordination Co-Driven Assembly of Supramolecular Octahedral Cages with Controllable Degree of Distortion

Discovering and constructing novel and fancy structures is the goal of many supramolecular chemists. In this work, we propose an assembly strategy based on the synergistic effect of coordination and covalent interactions to construct a set of octahedral supramolecular cages and adjust their degree of distortion. Our strategy innovatively utilizes the addition of sulfur atoms of a metal sulfide synthon, [Et₄N][Tp*WS₃] (A), to an alkynyl group of a pyridine-containing linker, resulting in a novel vertex with low symmetry, and of Cu(I) ions. By adjusting the length of the linker and the position of the reactive alkynyl group, the control of the deformation degree of the octahedral cages can be realized. These supramolecular cages exhibit enhanced third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. The results offer a powerful strategy to construct novel distorted cage structures as well as control the degree of distortion of supramolecular geometries.

Aggregation-Induced Emissive and Circularly Polarized Homogeneous Sulfono-γ-AApeptide Foldamers

Through our continuous effort in developing a new class of foldamers, we have both designed and synthesized homogenous sulfono-γ-AApeptides using tetraphenylethylene (TPE) moieties attached to the backbone as luminogenic sidechains. Based on previous crystal structures, we have found that these foldamers adopted a left-handed 414-helix. Due to the constraint of the helical scaffold, the rotation of the TPE moieties were restricted, leading to fluorescent emissive properties with high quantum yields not only at the aggregate state but also in solution. Investigation of the relationship between the structure and fluorescence behavior reveals that emission was induced by the combined effect of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and the rotated restriction from the backbone. Furthermore, as the packing mode of the luminogens could be precisely adjusted by the helical backbone, these foldamers were found to be circularly polarizable with relatively large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum). Interestingly, possessing cationic amphipathic structures similar to that of host-defense peptides (HDPs), these sulfono-γ-AApeptides were able to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) through membrane interactions.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

Emissive Metallacycle-Crosslinked Supramolecular Networks with Tunable Crosslinking Densities for Bacterial Imaging and Killing

The chemical structures and topologies of the crosslinks in supramolecular networks play a crucial role in their properties and functions. Herein, the preparation of a type of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM)-based supramolecular networks crosslinked by emissive hexagonal metallacycles is presented. The topological connections in these networks greatly affect their properties, as evidenced by their differences in absorption, emission, lower critical solution temperature, and modulus along with the variation of crosslinking densities. The integration of PNIPAAM and metallacycles in the networks benefits them improved bioavailability, making them serve as reagents for bacterial imaging and killing. This study provides a strategy to prepare cavity-crosslinked polymer networks for antibacterial applications.

Stable and Well-Organized Near-Infrared Platinum(II)-Acetylide-Based Metallacycles-Mediated Cancer Phototherapy

The development of metallacycles with high stability and intense near-infrared (NIR) absorption is important for biomedical applications. However, very few molecular design strategies have been developed on such metallacycles. Herein, we report a new series of stable and well-defined NIR-absorbing metallacycles (M1-M3) through the Pt-acetylide coordination with highly efficient photoconversion performance for cancer phototherapy. The metallacycles showed high stability and strong NIR absorption, and the absorption peaks were red shifted approximately 30 nm in comparison with their corresponding precursors. The introduction of Pt into metallacycles promotes significant photoconversions, including the singlet-to-triplet and nonradiative transitions. Moreover, the fabricated M3 nanoparticles (M3-NPs) showed favorable photoconversions into both thermal effect and singlet oxygen generation upon NIR irradiation, achieving tumor ablation. This novel design of Pt-acetylide metallacycles possesses not only complex topological architectures but also a valuable paradigm for precise cancer phototherapy, which is important for grafting stimuli-responsive functional groups into metallacycles for the development of high-performance biomedical supramolecular materials.

Tetraphenylethylene(TPE)-Containing Metal-Organic Nanobelt and Its Turn-on Fluorescence for Sulfide (S2-)

A metal-organic supramolecular nanobelt was synthesized by quantitative self-assembling terpyridine-functionized tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and Cd²⁺, which only showed a weak emission both in solution or aggregated state. Nevertheless, nanobelt complex could be transferred to a fluorescence turn-on sensor to S^2- by taking advantage of the structural transformation from nanobelt to its fluorescent ligand.

Construction of Supramolecular Liquid-Crystalline Metallacycles for Holographic Storage of Colored Images

Design and construction of new functionalized supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) via coordination-driven self-assembly strategy is highly important in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present a family of well-defined metallacycles decorated with mesogenic forklike dendrons through the strategy of coordination-driven self-assembly. Due to the existence of mesogenic forklike dendrons, the obtained metallacycles displayed the smectic A liquid crystal phase at room temperature while their precursors exhibited the rectangular columnar liquid crystal phase. Interestingly, by taking advantage of the electrostatic interactions between the positively charged metallacycle and the negatively charged heparin, the doping of heparin induced a significant change of the liquid-crystalline behaviors of metallacycles. More importantly, the prepared liquid-crystalline metallacycles could be further applied for holographic storage of colored images. Notably, the rhomboidal metallacycle and hexagonal metallacycle gave rise to different holographic performances although they featured a similar liquid crystal phase behavior. Therefore, this research not only provides the first successful example of supramolecular liquid-crystalline metallacycles for holographic storage of colored images but also opens a new door for supramolecular liquid-crystalline metallacycles toward advanced optical applications.

Luminescent Metallacycle-Cored Liquid Crystals Induced by Metal Coordination

Two rhomboidal metallacycles based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly are presented. Because metal-coordination interactions restrict the rotation of phenyl groups on tetraphenylethene units, these metallacycles were emissive both in solution and in solid state, and their aggregation-induced emission properties were well-retained. Moreover, the rhomboidal metallacyclic structures offer a platform for intermolecular packing beneficial for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Therefore, although neither of building blocks shows mesogenic properties, both thermotropic and lyotropic (in DMF) mesophases were observed in one of metallacycles, indicating that mesophases could be induced by metal-coordination interactions. This study not only reveals the mechanism for the formation of cavity-cored liquid crystals, but also provides a convenient approach to preparing supramolecular luminescent liquid crystals, which will serve as good candidates for chemo sensors and liquid crystal displays.

Emissive Platinum(II) Cages with Reverse Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer for Multiple Sensing

It is quite challenging to realize fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two chromophores with specific positions and directions. Herein, through the self-assembly of two carefully selected fluorescent ligands via metal-coordination interactions, we prepared two tetragonal prismatic platinum(II) cages with a reverse FRET process between their faces and pillars. Bearing different responses to external stimuli, these two emissive ligands are able to tune the FRET process, thus making the cages sensitive to solvents, pressure, and temperature. First, these cages could distinguish structurally similar alcohols such as n-butanol, t-butanol, and i-butanol. Furthermore, they showed decreased emission with bathochromic shifts under high pressure. Finally, they exhibited a remarkable ratiometric response to temperature over a wide range (223-353 K) with high sensitivity. For example, by plotting the ratio of the maximum emission (I₆₀₀/I₄₈₀) of metallacage 4b against the temperature, the slope reaches 0.072, which is among the highest values for ratiometric fluorescent thermometers reported so far. This work not only offers a strategy to manipulate the FRET efficiency in emissive supramolecular coordination complexes but also paves the way for the future design and preparation of smart emissive materials with external stimuli responsiveness.

Self-Assembled Saccharide-Functionalized Amphiphilic Metallacycles as Biofilms Inhibitor via "Sweet Talking"

Bacterial biofilms are troublesome in the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases due to their inherent resistance to antibiotic therapy. Exploration of alternative antibiofilm reagents provides opportunities to achieve highly effective treatments. Herein, we propose a strategy to employ self-assembled saccharide-functionalized amphiphilic metallacycles ([2+2]-Gal, [3+3]-Gal, and [6+6]-Gal) with multiple positive charges as a different type of antibacterial reagent, marrying saccharide functionalization that interact with bacteria via "sweet talking". These self-assembled glyco-metallacycles gave various nanostructures (nanoparticles, vesicles or micron-sized vesicles) with different biofilms inhibition effect on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Especially, the peculiar self-assembly mechanism, superior antibacterial effect and biofilms inhibition distinguished the [6+6]-Gal from other metallacycles. Meanwhile, in vivo S. aureus pneumonia animal model experiments suggested that [6+6]-Gal could relieve mice pneumonia aroused by S. aureus effectively. In addition, the control study of metallacycle [3+3]-EG₅ confirmed the significant role of galactoside both in the self-assembly process and the antibacterial efficacy. In view of the superior effect against bacteria, the saccharide-functionalized metallacycle could be a promising candidate as biofilms inhibitor or treatment agent for pneumonia.

Host-Guest Recognition and Fluorescence of a Tetraphenylethene-Based Octacationic Cage

We report the synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional tetraphenylethene-based octacationic cage that shows host-guest recognition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. coronene) in organic media and water-soluble dyes (e.g. sulforhodamine 101) in aqueous media through CH⋅⋅⋅π, π-π, and/or electrostatic interactions. The cage⊃coronene exhibits a cuboid internal cavity with a size of approximately 17.2×11.0×6.96 ų and a "hamburger"-type host-guest complex, which is hierarchically stacked into 1D nanotubes and a 3D supramolecular framework. The free cage possesses a similar cavity in the crystalline state. Furthermore, a host-guest complex formed between the octacationic cage and sulforhodamine 101 had a higher absolute quantum yield (Φ_F =28.5 %), larger excitation-emission gap (Δλ_ex-em =211 nm), and longer emission lifetime (τ=7.0 ns) as compared to the guest (Φ_F =10.5 %; Δλ_ex-em =11 nm; τ=4.9 ns), and purer emission (Δλ_FWHM =38 nm) as compared to the host (Δλ_FWHM =111 nm).

Porosity-driven large amplitude dynamics for nitroaromatic sensing with fluorescent films of alternating D-π-A molecules

We report herein the structural properties and nitroaromatic sensing performances of fluorescent thin films formed by alternating donor-acceptor π-conjugated chromophores. The incorporation of a flexible one-dimensional alkyl chain in the chromophore backbone drastically accelerates by more than one order of magnitude the sensing dynamics for the detection of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) vapors.

Detection of Nitroaromatics by Pyrene-Labeled Starch Nanoparticles

Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) were hydrophobically modified by using 1-pyrenebutyric acid (PyBA) with degrees of substitution (DS) between 0.0006 and 0.11. Fluorescence quenching studies were conducted on the pyrene-labeled starch nanoparticles (Py-SNPs) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water with nitromethane (NM), 4-mononitrotoluene (MNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) to assess the mode of quenching of the pyrene labels in the two solvents. In DMSO where pyrene, starch, and the quenchers were soluble, a decrease in fluorescence signal was the result of dynamic encounters between the excited pyrene labels and the nitrated quenchers. In water where starch could be dispersed but pyrene and the nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) were sparingly soluble, quenching took place through the binding of NACs to pyrene aggregates. Py(11)-SNPs (Py-SNPs with a DS of 0.11)-coated filter papers (Py-CFPs) were prepared as fluorescence sensors. The fluorescence emitted by Py-CFPs was quenched to 25% of its original value within 10 ± 2, 72 ± 20, and 23 ± 4 s upon exposure to vapors of MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. When known amounts of NACs were deposited onto Py-CFPs, their limit of detection (LOD) when the fluorescence decreased by more than 3 standard deviations (3σ) from its original value equaled 9.2 ± 0.8, 3.3 ± 0.5, and 0.20 ± 0.02 ng/mm² for MNT, DNT, and TNT, respectively. These response times and LODs were among the best values reported to date in the scientific literature for fluorescence sensors. The selectivity of the Py-CFPs toward NACs was also investigated by comparing their response to the presence of non-nitrated aromatics, amines, and aromatic ketones. Quenching was only observed with the latter family of chemicals tested, but with much lower efficiency compared to TNT, thus reflecting some level of selectivity toward this specific NAC.

Self-assembly of emissive metallocycles with tetraphenylethylene, BODIPY and terpyridine in one system

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) related (supra)molecules have been intensively investigated due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect based on the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR). Meanwhile, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) tends to emit intense fluorescence with high quantum yields. Herein, we combined TPE, BODIPY and terpyridine (TPY) into one system to study the emissive behaviour of organic building block as well as a self-assembled metallo-supramolecule. The TPY and BODIPY substituents with bulky sizes provide strong hindrance to restrict the rotation of the phenyl groups on TPE, leading to enhancement of emissive properties in both solution and aggregation states. Furthermore, the BODIPY-TPE-TPY ligand (L) was assembled with Zn (II) through coordination-driven self-assembly to form a cyclic dimer (D) with typical AIE characteristics.

Helical Sulfono-γ-AApeptides with Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was intensively studied because of packing of small molecules and polymers; however, mid-molecular-weight (1000-3000) molecular scaffold containing a precise number of AIE luminogens is rare. Herein, we report the investigation of three tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-modified sulfono-γ-AApeptides in which multiple TPE moieties are conjugated to the chiral right-handed helical peptidomimetic backbone as functional side chains. The crystal structure of the TPE-α/sulfono-γ-AA peptide 1 demonstrates that because of the rigid helical scaffold of the TPE-α/sulfono-γ-AA peptides, the intramolecular rotations of the TPE with short linker are restricted, therefore leading to the boosted fluorescent emission in solution. Peptides 2 and 3 exhibit aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), possibly because of the combination of both AIE and rotation restriction. Moreover, because of their preoriented assembly induced by the right-handed helical scaffold, these emissive chiral luminogens show effective circularly polarized luminescence signals with high dissymmetry factor glum. Finally, the amphiphilic nature of TPE-α/sulfono-γ-AA peptides could enable them to penetrate the bacterial membranes and exhibit strong fluorescence. Their antimicrobial activity and labeling-free character could further augment their potential applications in both materials and biomedical sciences.
