Two-Step Synthesis of Boron-Fused Double Helicenes

Twist to Boost: Circumventing Quantum Yield and Dissymmetry Factor Trade-Off in Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) enables promising applications in asymmetric photonics. However, the performances of CPL molecules do not yet meet the requirements of these applications. The shortcoming originates from the trade-off in CPL between the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and the photoluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_PL). In this study, we developed a molecular strategy to circumvent this trade-off. Our approach takes advantage of the strong propensity of [Pt(N^C^N)Cl], where the N^C^N ligand is 1-(2-oxazoline)-3-(2-pyridyl)phenylate, to form face-to-face stacks. We introduced chiral substituents, including (S)-methyl, (R)- and (S)-isopropyl, and (S)-indanyl groups, into the ligand framework. This asymmetric control induces torsional displacements that give homohelical stacks of the Pt(II) complexes. X-ray single-crystal structure analyses for the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex reveal the formation of a homohelical dimer with a Pt···Pt distance of 3.48 Å, which is less than the sum of the van der Waals radii of Pt. This helical stack elicits the metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) transition that exhibits strong chiroptical activity due to the electric transition moment making an acute angle to the magnetic transition moment. The PLQY and g_PL values of the MMLCT phosphorescence emission of the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex are 0.49 and 8.4 × 10^-4, which are improved by factors of ca. 6 and 4, respectively, relative to the values of the unimolecular emission (PLQY, 0.078; g_PL, 2.4 × 10^-4). Our photophysical measurements for the systematically controlled Pt(II) complexes reveal that the CPL amplifications depend on the chiral substituent. Our investigations also indicate that excimers are not responsible for the enhanced chiroptical activity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, organic electroluminescence devices were fabricated. The MMLCT emission devices were found to exhibit simultaneous enhancements in the external quantum efficiency (EQE, 9.7%) and the electroluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_EL, 1.2 × 10^-4) over the unimolecular emission devices (EQE, 5.8%; g_EL, 0.3 × 10^-4). These results demonstrate the usefulness of using the chiroptically active MMLCT emission for achieving an amplified CPL.

Circularly Polarized Fluorescent Helicene-Boranils: Synthesis, Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties

Mono- and di-boranil-substituted helicenes were prepared by BF₂ -borylation of the corresponding anils, readily synthesized by condensation of 2-amino- and 2,15-diamino-helicenes with 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde. After enantiomeric resolution using HPLC, their chiroptical properties including circularly polarized fluorescence in solution and in PMMA films were investigated and rationalized with the help of NMR, X-ray and quantum-chemical calculations.

One tool to bring them all: Au-catalyzed synthesis of B,O- and B,N-doped PAHs from boronic and borinic acids

The isoelectronic replacement of C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds with ⁻BN⁺ bonds in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widely used tool to prepare novel optoelectronic materials. Far less well explored are corresponding B,O-doped PAHs, although they have a similarly high application potential. We herein report on the modular synthesis of B,N- and B,O-doped PAHs through the [Au(PPh₃)NTf₂]-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of BN–H and BO–H bonds across suitably positioned C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bonds in the key step. Readily available, easy-to-handle o-alkynylaryl boronic and borinic acids serve as starting materials, which are either cyclized directly or first converted into the corresponding aminoboranes and then cyclized. The reaction even tolerates bulky mesityl substituents on boron, which later kinetically protect the formed B,N/O-PAHs from hydrolysis or oxidation. Our approach is also applicable for the synthesis of rare doubly B,N/O-doped PAHs. Specifically, we prepared 1,2-B,E-naphthalenes and -anthracenes, 1,5-B₂-2,6-E₂-anthracenes (E = N, O) as well as B,O₂-containing and unprecedented B,N,O-containing phenalenyls. Selected examples of these compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography; their optoelectronic properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, electron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Using a new unsubstituted (B,O)₂-perylene as the substrate for late-stage functionalization, we finally show that the introduction of two pinacolatoboryl (Bpin) substituents is possible in high yield and with perfect regioselectivity via an Ir-catalyzed C–H borylation approach.

Singly and doubly B,E-doped PAHs were synthesized using a protocol that starts from easy-to-handle boronic and borinic acids and offers the possibility to choose between the preparation of B,O- and B,N-PAHs in the final reaction step.

The spectral-shapes of absorption, emission, ECD and CPL of a fluorene-fused [7]helicene: Vibronic effect and solvent inhomogenous broadening

We compute the line shapes of absorption (ABS), emission (EMI), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of a fluorene-fused [7]helicene. To elucidate different physico-chemical factors responsible for the spectral shapes, we account for Franck-Condon (FC) contribution, Herzberg-Teller (HT) effect and Duschinsky rotation, as well as the solvent inhomogenous broadening. The latter is connected to the solvent reorganization energy which is calculated with the state-specific (SS) implementation of Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM). To understand the relative importance of different effects of equilibrium geometry displacements, frequencies changes, and Duschinsky mixing, we carefully compare and discuss the results of Adiabatic Hessian (AH), Adiabatic Shift and Frequencies (ASF), and Adiabatic Shift (AS) models in details. Our results agree with the experimental spectra very well. They show that FC contribution dominates the spectral shapes and HT effect leads to the break of mirror images between absorptive (ABS + ECD) and emissive (EMI + CPL) spectra.

BNB-doped phenalenyls - aromaticity switch upon one-electron reduction

Fully aromatic, luminescent, and highly robust BNB-doped phenalenyls have been prepared, which are isoelectronic to the phenalenyl cation. B-Fluoromesityl-substitution leads to fluorescence in an extremely narrow range and significant increase in the reduction potential. Detailed theoretical investigations revealed an intramolecular aromaticity switch upon one-electron reduction.

Modular Synthesis of Organoboron Helically Chiral Compounds: Cutouts from Extended Helices

Two types of helically chiral compounds bearing one and two boron atoms were synthesized by a modular approach. Formation of the helical scaffolds was executed by the introduction of boron to flexible biaryl and triaryl derived from small achiral building blocks. All-ortho-fused azabora[7]helicenes feature exceptional configurational stability, blue or green fluorescence with quantum yields (Φfl ) of 18-24 % in solution, green or yellow solid-state emission (Φfl up to 23 %), and strong chiroptical response with large dissymmetry factors of up to 1.12×10-2 . Azabora[9]helicenes consisting of angularly and linearly fused rings are blue emitters exhibiting Φfl of up to 47 % in CH2 Cl2 and 25 % in the solid state. As revealed by the DFT calculations, their P-M interconversion pathway is more complex than that of H1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis shows clear differences in the packing arrangement of methyl and phenyl derivatives. These molecules are proposed as primary structures of extended helices.

Access to benzo-fused aza[7]helicene via unexpected indolization of alkyne-amine

An efficient base-mediated indolization of alkyne-amine for the synthesis of quinolone-fused indole was developed and further applied to synthesize di- and triaza[7]helicenes bearing two and three pentagons, respectively.

Doubly Boron-Doped TADF Emitters Decorated with ortho-Donor Groups for Highly Efficient Green to Red OLEDs

Doubly boron-doped thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on a 9,10-diboraanthracene (DBA) acceptor decorated with ortho-donor groups (Cz2oDBA, 2; BuCz2oDBA, 3; DMAC2oDBA, 4) are prepared to realize high-efficiency green-to-red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). X-ray diffraction analyses of 2 and 4 reveal the symmetrical and highly twisted ortho-donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure of the emitters. The twisted conformation leads to a very small energy splitting (ΔE_ST <0.08 eV) between the excited singlet and triplet states that gives rise to strong TADF, as supported by theoretical studies. Depending on the strength of the donor moieties, the emission color is fine-tuned in the visible region from green (2) to yellow (3) to red (4). Carbazole-containing 2 and 3 exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) approaching 100 %, whereas DMAC-substituted 4 is moderately emissive (PLQY=44 %) in a doped host film. Highly efficient green-to-red TADF-OLEDs are realized with the proposed ortho-D-A-D compounds as emitters. The green and yellow OLEDs incorporating Cz2oDBA (2) and BuCz2oDBA (3) emitters exhibit high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26.6 % and 21.6 %, respectively. In particular, the green device shows an excellent power efficiency above 100 lm W^-1 . A red OLED fabricated with a DMAC2oDBA (4) emitter exhibits a maximum EQE of 10.1 % with an electroluminescence peak at 615 nm.

Molecular engineering enabling reversible transformation between helical and planar conformations by cyclization of alkynes

Molecular engineering enabling reversible transformation between helical and planar conformations is described herein. Starting from easily available 2-(pyridin-2-yl)anilines and alkynes, a one-pot strategy is set up for the synthesis of aza[4]helicenes via two successive rhodium-catalyzed C–H activation/cyclizations. Helical pyrrolophenanthridiziniums can be transformed into planar conformations through the cleavage of acidic pyrrole N–H, leading to turn-off fluorescence. NMR spectra, single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT calculations demonstrate that the formation of an intramolecular C–H⋯N hydrogen bond is beneficial to stabilize the pyrrole nitrogen anion of the planar molecule and provide increased planarity. The reversible conformation transformations can be finely adjusted by the electron-donating and -withdrawing groups on the π⁺-fused pyrrole skeleton in the physiological pH range, thus affording an opportunity for pH-controlled intracellular selective fluorescence imaging. Pyrrolophenanthridiziniums show turn-on fluorescence in lysosomes owing to the acidic environment of lysosomes and turn-off fluorescence out of lysosomes, indicating the occurrence of the deprotonation reaction outside lysosomes and the corresponding transformation from helical to planar conformations.

One-pot synthesis of aza[4]helicenes is accomplished through two successive C–H activation/cyclizations, which exhibit on/off fluorescence switching through reversible transformation between helical and planar conformations.

OBO-Fused Benzo[fg]tetracene as Acceptor With Potential for Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters

Six luminophores bearing an OBO-fused benzo[fg]tetracene core as an electron acceptor were designed and synthesized. The molecular structures of three molecules (PXZ-OBO, 5PXZ-OBO, 5DMAC-OBO) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and revealed significant torsion between the donor moieties and the OBO acceptor with dihedral angles between 75.5 and 86.2°. Photophysical studies demonstrate that blue and deep blue emission can be realized with photoluminescence maxima (λ_PL) ranging from 415 to 480 nm in mCP films. The emission energy is modulated by simply varying the strength of the donor heterocycle, the number of donors, and their position relative to the acceptor. Although the DMAC derivatives show negligible delayed emission because of their large singlet-triplet excited state energy difference, ΔE_ST, PXZ-based molecules, especially PXZ-OBO with an experimental ΔE_ST of 0.25 eV, demonstrate delayed emission in blend mCP films at room temperature, which suggests triplet exciton harvesting occurs in these samples, potentially by thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Naphthalene diimide-incorporated helical thienoacene: a helical molecule with high electron mobility, good solubility, and thermally stable solid phase

A Naphthalene diimide (NDI)-incorporated helical thienoacene was developed. The compound has high electron mobility (1.4 cm2 V-1 s-1) thanks to its two-dimensional π-π interaction assisted by the intermolecular C-HO hydrogen bonding of the NDI moieties. Moreover, its bow-shaped π-skeleton reduces molecular fluctuation and gives the compound a thermally stable solid phase, which enables us to fabricate thermally stable organic devices.

Insights for vibronic effects on spectral shapes of electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence of aza[7]helicene

We present a systematic study of vibrationally resolved absorption (ABS), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), emission (EMI), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of aza[7]helicene. Because of the rare experience of theoretical CPL calculation, a variety of harmonic models have been employed to compute the vibronic structures. To fully understand the vibronic effects on the spectral shapes, Franck-Condon (FC) and Herzberg-Teller (HT) contributions, Duschinsky mixings and temperature effect have all been taken into consideration. The performance of different alternative approximate methods has been carefully compared and discussed in detail. The results show that Vertical Hessian (VH) model has a slight better performance on the spectral shapes than Adiabatic Hessian (AH), especially for CPL spectrum. The thermal excitation effect has led to a reduced resolution and a broader spectral width. The moderate HT effects on the different spectral shapes have been addressed. The dissymmetry factors have been correctly reproduced and the main vibronic features of the four different spectral shapes have been successfully captured. A good estimation of the overall spectral width, relative position and relative height of different spectral bands has been presented. The nice agreement with the experiment allows us to present a detailed interpretation of the spectral shapes.

Solution-Processable Pure Green Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter Based on the Multiple Resonance Effect

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials based on the multiple resonance (MR) effect are applied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), combining high color purity and efficiency. However, they are not fabricated via solution-processing, which is an economical approach toward the mass production of OLED displays. Here, a solution-processable MR-TADF material (OAB-ABP-1), with an extended π-skeleton and bulky substituents, is designed. OAB-ABP-1 is synthesized from commercially available starting materials via a four-step process involving one-shot double borylation. OAB-ABP-1 presents attractive photophysical properties, a narrow emission band, a high photoluminescence quantum yield, a small energy gap between S₁ and T₁ , and low activation energy for reverse intersystem crossing. These properties are attributed to the alternating localization of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals induced by the boron, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms. Furthermore, to facilitate charge recombination, two novel semiconducting polymers with similar ionization potentials to that of OAB-ABP-1 are synthesized for use as interlayer and emissive layer materials. A solution-processed OLED device is fabricated using OAB-ABP-1 and the aforementioned polymers; it exhibits pure green electroluminescence with a small full-width at half-maximum and a high external quantum efficiency with minimum efficiency roll-off.

Build-up of double carbohelicenes using nitroarenes: dual role of the nitro functionality as an activating and leaving group

The construction of double carbohelicenes is highly fascinating yet challenging work. Disclosed herein is a streamlined and simplified synthetic route to double carbohelicenes starting from nitroarenes through sequential nitro-activated ortho-C-H arylation, denitrative alkenylation and intramolecular cyclodehydrogenation. In this synthetic strategy, the nitro group plays a dual role namely as a leaving group for the denitrative alkenylation and as an activating group for ortho-C-H arylation, which is distinct from those of aryl halides in a conventional coupling reaction. In this work, the palladium-catalyzed Heck-type alkenylation of nitroarenes has been presented, in which the conventionally inert Ar-NO2 bond is cleaved. This work provides a novel synthetic strategy for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

BNB-Doped Phenalenyls: Modular Synthesis, Optoelectronic Properties, and One-Electron Reduction

A highly modular synthesis of BNB- and BOB-doped phenalenyls is presented. Treatment of the 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged boronic acid anhydride 1 with LiAlH₄/Me₃SiCl afforded the corresponding 1,8-naphthalenediyl-supported diborane(6) 2, which served as the starting material for all subsequent transformations. Upon addition of MesMgBr/Me₃SiCl, 2 was readily converted to the tetraorganyl diborane(6) 5. The further heteroatoms were finally introduced through the reaction of 2 with (Me₃Si)₂NR' or 5 with H₂NR' or H₂O (R' = H, Me, p-Tol). A helically twisted, fully BNB-embedded PAH 11 was prepared by combining 2 with a dibrominated m-terphenylamine, followed by a Grignard-mediated double ring-closure reaction. All compounds devoid of B-H bonds show favorable optoelectronic properties, such as luminescence and reversible reduction behavior. In the case of the BNB-phenalenyl 7 (BMes, NMe), the radical-anion salt K[7^•] was generated through chemical reduction with K metal and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. K[7^•] is not long-term stable in a THF/c-hexane solution, but abstracts an H atom with formation of the diamagnetic BNB-doped 1H-phenalene K[7H].

Rhodium-Catalyzed Highly Diastereo- and Enantioselective Synthesis of a Configurationally Stable S-Shaped Double Helicene-Like Molecule

An S-shaped double helicene-like molecule (>99 % ee), possessing stable helical chirality, has been synthesized by the rhodium(I)/difluorphos complex-catalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective intramolecular double [2+2+2] cycloaddition of a 2-naphthol- and benzene-linked hexayne. The collision between two terminal naphthalene rings destabilizes the helical chirality of the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule, but the introduction of two additional fused benzene rings significantly increases the configurational stability. Thus, no epimerization and racemization were observed even at 100 °C. The enantiopure S-shaped double helicene-like molecule forms a trimer through the multiple C-H⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅O interactions in the solid-state. The trimers stack to form columnar packing structures, in which neighboring stacks have opposite dipole directions. The accumulation of helical structures in the same direction in the S-shaped double helicene-like molecule enhanced the chiroptical properties.

Indole-Based Aza[n]helicenes (n=5, 6) with Violet-Blue Fluorescence and Two-Photon Absorption (TPA)

A series of indole-based helicenes, namely, 15-hexyl-15H-tetraphenyl[1,2-e]indole (HTPI), 14-hexyl-14H-benzo[4',5']thieno [2',3':7,8]naphtha[1,2-e]indole (HBTNI), 7-hexyl-7H-indolo[5,4-k] phenanthridine (HIPD) and 3-hexyl-3H-phenanthro[4,3-e]indole (HPI) were successfully synthesized by three- or four-step reactions. They exhibited good solubility and high thermal stability of T_d =247, 388, 294 and 251 °C, respectively. These compounds emit violet-blue light with maximum emission peaks at 415, 397, 397 and 391 nm in hexane. Among them, HBTNI had excellent thermal stability, narrow and sharp emission peaks, and highest photoluminescence quantum yield (0.32). Thus, HBTNI was an ideal candidate for the violet-blue emitters of OLEDs. Furthermore, the four compounds had two-photon absorption and two-photon excited fluorescence. HTPI showed the maximum TPA with the TPA cross-section (δ) of 171.5 GM at 770 nm. They were rare examples of helicenes with both violet-blue emission and TPA.

Vibrationally resolved electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectra of a boron-fused double helicene: A theoretical study

In this work, we present the theoretical study of the vibrationally resolved absorption (ABS), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), emission (EMI), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of a boron-fused double helicene, with a detailed and complete discussion of the alternative possible approximate methods. Given the fact that few examples of CPL calculations exist, the potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been constructed and compared with Adiabatic (AH) and Vertical Hessian (VH) models. All the vibronic calculations have accounted for Duschinsky mixings, Franck-Condon (FC) effect and Herzberg-Teller (HT) contribution. Moreover, different HT expansions have been checked and compared, by computing the derivatives of the electric and magnetic dipole transition moments around the equilibrium geometries of the initial and final states. Our results show that both AH and VH models have well reproduced the experimental vibronic structures and VH model shows a better performance in the simulation of spectral lineshapes. They also show that HT effects dominate the shapes of EMI and CPL, tuning the relative heights of the different vibronic peaks, improving the agreement with the experiment for EMI. Moreover, HT effects are the main reason for the mirror-symmetry breaking between ECD and CPL spectra. Furthermore, interesting interference effects between FC and HT contributions have also been addressed.

Perylene Diimide-Embedded Double [8]Helicenes

The rational design and modification of the helix is of significance for fully promoting properties of configurationally stable materials for various applications in chiral science. Herein, a straightforward, sterically less demanding synthetic approach involving hybridization between two [6]helicene subunits and a perylene diimide (PDI) scaffold are presented, affording perylene diimide-embedded double [8]helicenes (PD8Hs) which represent the highest double carbohelicenes reported thus far. Due to the structural features of PDI and [6]helicene, the PD8Hs have six stereoisomers including two pairs of enantiomers and two mesomers. Such structural diversity is unprecedented in the realm of double helicenes. The absolute configuration of these PD8Hs was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, revealing that the subtle configurational differences lead to great variation in the superhelical structure and molecular packing arrangement. Due to the embedding of the PDI chromophore, the PD8Hs possess outstanding fluorescence quantum yields of approximately 30%. Two pairs of enantiomers were resolved by chiral HPLC, and the chiroptical properties were evaluated using circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy, of which PD8H-6R exhibited excellent chiroptical performances in both the absorption and emission ranges with dissymmetry factors |g_abs| of 0.012 and |g_lum| of 0.002.

Synthesis of bis-BN-Naphthalene-Fused Oxepins and Their Photoluminescence Including White-Light Emission

A series of novel bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepin derivatives were synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction from brominated 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes and cis-bis(boryl)alkenes. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins feature a planar framework. The electronic and photophysical properties of the novel BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which disclosed the distinct electronic and photophysical properties of the analogous hydrocarbon system. Interestingly, dual-fluorescent emissions were observed upon dissolving N-substituted derivatives 10-14 in dimethyl sulfoxide. Tunable emission colors especially for white-light emissions can be achieved by controlling the ratio of solvents, concentration, or temperature using only a single-molecule compound.

Stereospecific Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Propeller-Shaped C90 H48 PAH

Herein, we have synthesized an enantiomerically pure propeller-shaped PAH, C90 H48 , possessing three [7]helicene and three [5]helicene subunits. This compound can be obtained in gram quantities in a straightforward manner. The photophysical and chiroptical properties were investigated using UV/Vis absorption and emission, optical rotation and circular dichroism spectroscopy, supported by DFT calculations. The nonlinear optical properties were investigated by two-photon absorption measurements using linearly and circularly polarized light. The extremely twisted structure and packing of the homochiral compound were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Charging OBO-Fused Double [5]Helicene with Electrons

Chemical reduction of OBO-fused double[5]helicene with Group 1 metals (Na and K) has been investigated for the first time. Two doubly-reduced products have been isolated and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a solvent-separated ion triplet (SSIT) with Na+ ions and a contact-ion pair (CIP) with K+ ion. As the key structural outcome, the X-ray crystallographic analysis discloses the consequences of adding two electrons to the double helicene core in the SSIT without metal binding and reveals the preferential binding site in the CIP with K+ counterions. In both products, an increase in the twisting of the double helicene core upon charging was observed. The negative charge localization at the central core has been identified by theoretical calculations, which are in full agreement with X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic results. Notably, it was confirmed that the two-electron reduction of OBO-fused double[5]helicene is reversible.

Functionalization of 9-thioxanthone at the 1-position: From arylamino derivatives to [1]benzo(thio)pyrano[4,3,2-de]benzothieno[2,3-b]quinolines of biological interest

Original 1-amino substituted thioxanthone derivatives were easily prepared from the bare heterocycle by a deprotometalation-iodolysis-copper-catalyzed CN bond formation sequence. This last reaction delivered mono- or/and diarylated products depending on the aniline involved. 1-Amino-9-thioxanthone was also prepared and reacted with 2-iodoheterocycles. Interestingly, while 1-(arylamino)-9-thioxanthones could be isolated, their subsequent cyclization was found to deliver original hexacyclic derivatives of helicoidal nature. Evaluation of their photophysical properties revealed high fluorescence in polar media, indicating potential applications for biological imaging. These compounds being able to inhibit PIM1 kinase, their putative binding mode was examined through molecular modeling experiments. Altogether, these results tend to suggest the discovery of a new family of fluorescent PIM inhibitors and pave the way for their future rational optimization.

Heteroatom-Doped Nanographenes with Structural Precision

Nanographenes, which are defined as nanoscale (1–100 nm) graphene cutouts, include quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and quasi-zero-dimensional graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) larger than 1 nm can be viewed as GQDs with atomically precise molecular structures and can thus be termed nanographene molecules. As a result of quantum confinement, nanographenes are promising for next-generation semiconductor applications with finite band gaps, a significant advantage compared with gapless two-dimensional graphene. Similar to the atomic doping strategy in inorganic semiconductors, incorporation of heteroatoms into nanographenes is a viable way to tune their optical, electronic, catalytic, and magnetic properties. Such properties are highly dependent not only on the molecular size and edge structure but also on the heteroatom type, doping position, and concentration. Therefore, reliable synthetic methods are required to precisely control these structural features. In this regard, bottom-up organic synthesis provides an indispensable way to achieve structurally well-defined heteroatom-doped nanographenes.

Polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds have attracted great attention of organic chemists for decades. Research in this direction has been further promoted by modern interest in supramolecular chemistry and organic electronics. The rise of graphene in the 21st century has endowed large polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds with a new role as model systems for heteroatom-doped graphene. Heteroatom-doped nanographene molecules are in their own right promising materials for photonic, optoelectronic, and spintronic applications because of the extended π conjugation. Despite the significant advances in polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds, heteroatom-doped nanographene molecules with sizes of over 1 nm and their relevant GNRs are still scarce.

In this Account, we describe the synthesis and properties of large heteroatom-doped nanographenes, mainly summarizing relevant advances in our group in the past decade. We first present several examples of heteroatom doping based on the prototypical nanographene molecule, i.e., hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC), including nitrogen-doped HBC analogues by formal replacement of benzene with other heterocycles (e.g., aromatic pyrimidine and pyrrole and antiaromatic pyrazine) and sulfur-doped nanographene molecules via thiophene annulation. We then introduce heteroatom-doped zigzag edges and a variety of zigzag-edged nanographene molecules incorporating nitrogen, boron, and oxygen atoms. We finally summarize heteroatom-doped GNRs based on the success in the molecular cases. We hope that this Account will further stimulate the synthesis and applications of heteroatom-doped nanographenes with a combined effort from different disciplines.

Coumarin-Annelated Regioisomeric Heptahelicenes: Influence of Helicity on Excited-State Properties and Chiroptical Properties

Two regioisomeric pairs of heptahelical mono- and biscoumarins that are differentiated by "inward" and "outward" disposition of the pyran-2-one moiety have been synthesized and investigated to understand the influence of helicity on excited-state and chiroptical properties. A slight variation in the helicities is found to manifest in contrasting excited-state properties of coumarin-annelated heptahelicenes; in addition to the intramolecular charge transfer, structural relaxation in the excited state is shown from theoretical calculations to cause decrease in the fluorescence quantum yield for a system with higher helicity. The optically pure enantiomers of heptahelical coumarins exhibit helicity-dependent chiroptical properties, namely, specific rotations, molar ellipticities, Cotton effects, and anisotropic dissymmetry factors. Theoretical calculations point to factors that are not readily explicable.
