Abstract
Activation of C-H bonds assisted by a directing group is indispensable in organic synthesis. Among them, utilizing oxidative directing groups that can serve as an internal oxidant to drive the Mn/Mn+2 catalytic cycle has recently become a promising strategy. A survey of published reactions involving N-alkoxyamides or N-acyloxyamides reveals that not all N-O bonds act as an internal oxidant. We have therefore systematically investigated the effect of the oxidative groups on a model reaction catalyzed by Ru(II), Rh(III), and Pd(II) complexes. DFT calculations show that N-methoxy and N-acyloxy groups oxidize Ru(II) to Ru(IV) and Rh(III) to Rh(V), but cannot oxidize a cyclo-Pd(II) intermediate to Pd(IV). The stability of the metal imido intermediate 7-M (M = Ru, Rh, and Pd) controls whether the oxidation occurs or not. N-Acyloxy groups show a more pronounced selectivity than N-methoxy to oxidize Ru(II) and Rh(III) species, while no distinctive effect is observed for Pd(II).

Abstract
It has been established that an unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl (Cp) Rh(III) complex is an effective catalyst for the oxidative ortho-olefination of phenyl carbamates with both acrylates and styrenes under mild conditions. In addition, diolefination of a protected BINOL (1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diol) proceeded in high yields and disubstituted acrylates could participate in this catalysis. Experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies elucidated that an electron-deficient nature of the unsubstituted CpRh(III) complex accelerates both the electrophilic aryl C-H rhodation and the rate-limiting alkene insertion steps.

Abstract
The generalization of related asymmetric processes in organocatalyzed reactions is an ongoing challenge due to subtle, noncovalent interactions that drive selectivity. The lack of transferability is often met with a largely empirical approach to optimizing catalyst structure and reaction conditions. This has led to the development of diverse structural catalyst motifs and inspired unique design principles in this field. Bifunctional hydrogen bond donor (HBD) catalysis exemplifies this in which a broad collection of enantioselective transformations has been successfully developed. Herein, we describe the use of data science methods to connect catalyst and substrate structural features of an array of reported enantioselective bifunctional HBD catalysis through an iterative statistical modeling process. The computational parameters used to build the correlations are mechanism-specific based on the proposed transition states, which allows for analysis into the noncovalent interactions responsible for asymmetric induction. The resulting statistical models also allow for extrapolation to out-of-sample examples to provide a prediction platform that can be used for future applications of bifunctional hydrogen bond donor catalysis. Finally, this multireaction workflow presents an opportunity to build statistical models unifying various modes of activation relevant to asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract
RhIII -catalyzed C-H functionalization reaction yielding isoindolinones from aryl hydroxamates and ortho-substituted styrenes is reported. The reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature, and tolerates a range of functional groups. Experimental and computational investigations support that the high regioselectivity observed for these substrates results from the presence of an ortho-substituent embedded in the styrene. The resulting isoindolinones are valuable building blocks for the synthesis of bioactive compounds. They provide easy access to the natural-product-like compounds, isoindolobenzazepines, in a one-pot two-step reaction. Selected isoindolinones inhibited Hedgehog (Hh)-dependent differentiation of multipotent murine mesenchymal progenitor stem cells into osteoblasts.

Abstract
C-H activation reactions enable chemists to unveil new retrosynthetic disconnections and streamline conventional synthetic approaches. A long-standing challenge in C-H activation is the inability to distinguish electronically and sterically similar C-H bonds. Although numerous synergistic combinations of transition-metal complexes and chelating directing groups have been utilized to distinguish C-H bonds, undirected regioselective C-H functionalization strategies remain elusive. Here we report a regioselective C-H activation/amination reaction of various unsymmetrical dialkyl-substituted alkenes. The regioselectivity of C-H activation is correlated to the electronic properties of allylic C-H bonds indicated by the corresponding 1JCH coupling constants. A linear relationship between the difference in the 1JCH coupling constants of the two competing allylic C-H bonds (Δ1JCH) and the C-H activation barriers (ΔΔG‡) has also been determined.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of iridium(III) catalysts that bear an amide-pendant cyclopentadienyl ligand ([CpA IrI2 ]2 ) is reported. These [CpA IrI2 ]2 catalysts were obtained from the complexation of a CpA ligand precursor with [Ir(cod)OAc]2 followed by oxidation. Double aromatic homologation reactions of benzamides with alkynes by fourfold C-H activation proceeded in good to high yield with these [CpA IrI2 ]2 catalysts, demonstrating their superior catalytic performance in this challenging transformation.

Abstract
A first quantitative model for calculating the nucleophilicity of alkanes is described. A statistical treatment was applied to the analysis of the reactivity of 29 different alkane C-H bonds towards in situ generated metal carbene electrophiles. The correlation of the recently reported experimental reactivity with two different sets of descriptors comprising a total of 86 parameters was studied, resulting in the quantitative descriptor-based alkane nucleophilicity (QDEAN) model. This model consists of an equation with only six structural/topological descriptors, and reproduces the relative reactivity of the alkane C-H bonds. This reactivity can be calculated from parameters emerging from the schematic drawing of the alkane and a simple set of sums.

Abstract
We report a RhIII -catalyzed regio- and diastereoselective synthesis of δ-lactams from readily available acrylamide derivatives and unactivated alkenes. The reaction provides a rapid route to a diverse set of δ-lactams in good yield and stereoselectivity, which serve as useful building blocks for substituted piperidines. The regioselectivity of the reaction with unactivated terminal alkene is significantly improved by using Cpt ligand on the RhIII catalyst. The synthetic utility of the reaction is demonstrated by the preparation of a potential drug candidate containing a trisubstituted piperidine moiety. Mechanistic studies show that the reversibility of the C-H activation depends on the choice of Cp ligand on the RhIII catalyst. The irreversible C-H activation is observed and becomes turnover-limiting with [Cpt RhCl2 ]2 as catalyst.

Abstract
A strategy for the synthesis of isoxazolidine/1,2-oxazinane-fused isoquinolin-1(2H)-ones from alkyne-tethered N-alkoxyamides is described, in which cheap Mn(acac)2 is used as a catalyst to facilitate a radical cascade annulation. The method features mild conditions, additive-free reaction and broad substrate scope. It is the first example via manganese/air catalytic systems to construct isoquinolin-1(2H)-one heterocycles.

Abstract
It has been established that a cyclopentadienyl (Cp) RhIII complex with two aryl groups and a pendant amide moiety catalyzes the formal Lossen rearrangement/alkenylation cascade of N-pivaloyl heterole carboxamides with internal alkynes, leading to alkenylheteroles. Interestingly, the use of sterically demanding internal alkynes afforded not the alkenylation but the [3+2] annulation products ([5,5]-fused heteroles). In these reactions, the pendant amide moiety of the CpRhIII complex may accelerate the formal Lossen rearrangement. The use of five-membered heteroles may deter reductive elimination to form strained [5,5]-fused heteroles; instead, protonation proceeds to give the alkenylation products. Bulky alkyne substituents accelerate the reductive elimination to allow the formation of the [5,5]-fused heteroles.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(Bpin)(PEt3)3] (1), [Rh(H)(PEt3)3] (5) and [Rh(Me)(PEt3)3] (14) were employed in reactions with pentafluorostyrene affording coordination of the olefin and C-F or C-H bond activation. Control of the reaction conditions allowed for selective activation reactions at different positions at the fluorinated aromatic ring. The rhodacycle trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2(2-C6F4))(PEt3)2] (7) was identified as an intermediate for an activation at the 2-position. Reactivity studies of the latter with CO led to the generation of trans-[Rh(F)(CH2CH2C6F4)(CO)(PEt3)2] (10). Stoichiometric and catalytic hydroboration reactions were achieved using complexes 1 or 5 as catalysts.

Abstract
New iridium(III)-bipyridonate complexes having cyclopentadienyl ligands with a series of alkyl substituents were synthesized for the purpose of tuning the catalytic activity for acceptorless dehydrogenation reactions. A comparison of the catalytic activity was performed for the reaction of alcoholic substrates such as 1-phenylethanol, 2-octanol, and benzyl alcohol. The 1-t-butyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl iridium complex exhibited the best performance, which surpassed that of the 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) iridium catalyst in the dehydrogenation reaction of alcohols. The catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline was also examined. The highest efficiency was obtained in the reaction catalyzed by the same t-butyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl iridium complex.

Abstract
We have developed a formal [4+1] approach to pyrrolidines from readily available unactivated terminal alkenes as 4-carbon partners. The reaction provides a rapid construction of various pyrrolidine containing structures, especially for the diastereoselective synthesis of spiro-pyrrolidines. Mechanistic investigation suggests a Rh(III)-catalyzed intermolecular aziridination of the alkene and subsequent acid-promoted ring expansion for the pyrrolidine formation.

Abstract
A Rh(III)-catalyzed undirected C-H activation/alkene insertion to synthesize diversified indole-fused polycyclics has been developed. Intramolecular electrophilic cyclization generated a 3-indolyl rhodium species that went through an aryl-to-aryl 1,4-rhodium migration to realize the C-H activation. The subsequent [4 + 2] carboannulation or hydroarylation of alkenes could be achieved, respectively, by simply adjusting the additives of the reaction.

Abstract
![]()
The
development of catalytic enantioselective methods is routinely
carried out using easily accessible and prototypical substrates. This
approach to reaction development often yields asymmetric methods that
perform poorly using substrates that are sterically or electronically
dissimilar to those used during the reaction optimization campaign.
Consequently, expanding the scope of previously optimized catalytic
asymmetric reactions to include more challenging substrates is decidedly
nontrivial. Here, we address this challenge through the development
of a systematic workflow to broaden the applicability and reliability
of asymmetric conjugate additions to substrates conventionally regarded
as sterically and electronically demanding. The copper-catalyzed asymmetric
conjugate addition of alkylzirconium nucleophiles to form tertiary
centers, although successful for linear alkyl chains, fails for more
sterically demanding linear α,β-unsaturated ketones. Key
to adapting this method to obtain high enantioselectivity was the
synthesis of modified phosphoramidite ligands, designed using quantitative
structure–selectivity relationships (QSSRs). Iterative rounds
of model construction and ligand synthesis were executed in parallel
to evaluate the performance of 20 chiral ligands. The copper-catalyzed
asymmetric addition is now more broadly applicable, even tolerating
linear enones bearing tert-butyl β-substituents.
The presence of common functional groups is tolerated in both nucleophiles
and electrophiles, giving up to 99% yield and 95% ee across 20 examples.

Abstract
An intramolecular Ir(III)-catalyzed regiodivergent oxyamination of unactivated alkenes provides valuable γ-lactams, γ-lactones and δ-lactams. The regioselectivity is controlled by the electronically tunable cyclopentadienyl Ir(III)-complexes enabling oxyamination via either 5-exo or 6-endo pathways. With respect to the mechanism, we propose a highly reactive [3.1.0] bicycle intermediate derived from Ir(V) nitrene-mediated aziridination to be a key intermediate toward the synthesis of γ-lactams.

Abstract
The sustainable synthesis of relevant scaffolds for their use in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and materials sectors constitutes one of the most urgent challenges that the chemical community needs to overcome. In this context, the development of innovative and more efficient catalytic processes based on a fundamental understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms remains a largely unresolved challenge for academic and industrial chemists. Herein, selected examples of computational and experimental knowledge-driven approaches for the rational design of transition-metal-catalyzed transformations are discussed.

Abstract
Copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (Cu-ATRP) is one of the most widely used controlled radical polymerization techniques. Notwithstanding the extensive mechanistic studies in the literature, the transition states of the activation/deactivation of the growing polymer chain, a key equilibrium in Cu-ATRP, have not been investigated computationally. Therefore, the understanding of the origin of ligand and initiator effects on the rates of activation/deactivation is still limited. Here, we present the first computational analysis of Cu-ATRP activation transition states to reveal factors that affect the rates of activation and deactivation. The Br atom transfer between the polymer chain and the Cu catalyst occurs through an unusual bent geometry that involves pronounced interactions between the polymer chain end and the ancillary ligand on the Cu catalyst. Therefore, the rates of activation/deactivation are determined by both the electronic properties of the Cu catalyst and the ligand-initiator steric repulsions. In addition, our calculations revealed the important role of ligand backbone flexibility on the activation. These theoretical analyses led to the identification of three chemically meaningful descriptors, namely HOMO energy of the catalyst ( EHOMO), percent buried volume ( Vbur%), and distortion energy of the catalyst (Δ Edist), to describe the electronic, steric, and flexibility effects on reactivity, respectively. A robust and simple predictive model for ligand effect on reactivity is thereby established by correlating these three descriptors with experimental activation rate constants using multivariate linear regression. Validation using a structurally diverse set of ligands revealed the average error is less than ±2 kcal/mol compared to the experimentally derived activation energies. The same approach was also applied to develop a predictive model for reactivity of different alkyl halide initiators using R-X bond dissociation energy (BDE) and Cu-X halogenophilicity as descriptors.

Abstract
Ligands, especially phosphines and carbenes, can play a key role in modifying and controlling homogeneous organometallic catalysts, and they often provide a convenient approach to fine-tuning the performance of known catalysts. The measurable outcomes of such catalyst modifications (yields, rates, selectivity) can be set into context by establishing their relationship to steric and electronic descriptors of ligand properties, and such models can guide the discovery, optimization, and design of catalysts. In this review we present a survey of calculated ligand descriptors, with a particular focus on homogeneous organometallic catalysis. A range of different approaches to calculating steric and electronic parameters are set out and compared, and we have collected descriptors for a range of representative ligand sets, including 30 monodentate phosphorus(III) donor ligands, 23 bidentate P,P-donor ligands, and 30 carbenes, with a view to providing a useful resource for analysis to practitioners. In addition, several case studies of applications of such descriptors, covering both maps and models, have been reviewed, illustrating how descriptor-led studies of catalysis can inform experiments and highlighting good practice for model comparison and evaluation.

Abstract
An unprecedented Pd-catalyzed alkyne insertion/C-H activation/intramolecular [4 + 2] carboannulation of alkenes has been reported. In this transformation, the C-H activation was triggered by an in situ generated alkenylpalladium species via the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of aryl iodides and alkynes. Subsequently, the resulting five-membered C, C-palladacycle intermediates were added across the alkenes, providing a unique approach to access diversified polycyclics in good efficiency. Two new rings and three C-C bonds were formed in one pot.

Abstract
It has been established that a newly developed moderately electron-deficient cyclopentadienyl (Cp)-Rh(III) complex, bearing ester and pendant amide moieties on the Cp ring [CpARh(III)], is able to catalyze the aerobic oxidative olefination of benzamides, bearing nonspecial carbamoyl groups, with styrenes including disubstituted ones at relatively low temperature (60-80 °C). The presence of both the ester and pendant acidic N-phenylcarbamoyl moieties on the CpA ligand play important roles in facilitation of the catalysis without sacrificing thermal stability of the complex.
