Nonconventional Three-Component Hierarchical Host–Guest Assembly Based on Mo-Blue Ring-Shaped Giant Anion, γ-Cyclodextrin, and Dawson-type Polyoxometalate

Gas-Phase Fragmentation of Host-Guest Complexes of Cyclodextrins and Polyoxometalates

Gas-phase fragmentation pathways of host-guest complexes of cyclodextrins (CDs) and polyoxometalates (POMs) were examined using collision-induced dissociation (CID). The host-guest complexes studied here were composed of two different classes of POMs-Keggin (PW₁₂O₄₀^3-) and Lindqvist (M₆O₁₉^2-, M = Mo, W)-and three types of CDs (α-, β-, and γ-CD) differing in the diameter of the inner cavity. The CD-POM complexes were generated either by mixing methanol solutions of POM and CD or through a one-step acidic condensation of tetraoxometalates MO₄^2- (M = Mo, W) with CDs for complexes with Keggin and Lindqvist anions, respectively, and introduced into the gas phase using electrospray ionization (ESI). We observe distinct differences in fragmentation pathways of the complexes of Keggin and Lindqvist POMs under high- and low-energy CID conditions. Specifically, direct dissociation and proton transfer from CD to POM accompanied by the separation of fragments is observed in CID of Keggin CD-POM complexes. In contrast, dissociation of CD complexes with Lindqvist POMs is dominated by the simultaneous loss of multiple water molecules. This unusual fragmentation channel is attributed to dissociation of the POM cluster inside the CD cavity accompanied by covalent bond formation between the fragments and CD and elimination of multiple water molecules. The observed covalent coupling of metal oxide clusters opens up opportunities for derivatization of macrocyclic host molecules using collisional excitation of gaseous non-covalent complexes.

Self-Assembly of Short Chain Poly- N-isopropylacrylamid Induced by Superchaotropic Keggin Polyoxometalates: From Globules to Sheets

We show here for the first time that short chain poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), one of the most famous thermoresponsive polymers, self-assembles in water to form (i) discrete nanometer-globules and (ii) micrometric sheets with nm-thickness upon addition of the well-known Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ (PW). The type of self-assembly is controlled by PW concentration: at low PW concentrations, PW adsorbs on PNIPAM chains to form globules consisting of homogeneously distributed PWs in PNIPAM droplets of several nm in size. Upon further addition of PW, a phase transition from globules to micrometric sheets is observed for PNIPAMs above a polymer critical chain length, between 18 and 44 repeating units. The thickness of the sheets is controlled by the PNIPAM chain length, here from 44 to 88 repeating units. The PNIPAM sheets are electrostatically stabilized PWs accumulated on each side of the sheets. The shortest PNIPAM chain with 18 repeating units produces PNIPAM/PW globules with 5-20 nm size but no sheets. The PW/PNIPAM self-assembly arises from a solvent mediated mechanism associated with the partial dehydration of PW and of the PNIPAM, which is related to the general propensity of POMs to adsorb on neutral hydrated surfaces. This effect, known as superchaotropy, is further highlighted by the significant increase in the lower critical solubilization temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM observed upon the addition of PW in the mM range. The influence of the POM nature on the self-assembly of PNIPAM was also investigated by using H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀ (SiW) and H₃PMo₁₂O₄₀ (PMo), i.e. changing the POM's charge density or polarizability in order to get deeper understanding on the role of electrostatics and polarizability in the PNIPAM self-assembly process. We show here that the superchaotropic behavior of POMs with PNIPAM polymers enables the formation and the shape control of supramolecular organic-inorganic hybrids.

Polyoxometalates as components of supramolecular assemblies

The non-covalent interaction of polyoxometalates (POMs) with inorganic- or organic-based moieties affords hybrid assemblies with specific physicochemical properties that are of high interest for both fundamental and applied studies, including the discovery of conceptually new compounds and unveiling the impact of their intra-supramolecular relationships on the fields of catalysis, molecular electronics, energy storage and medicine. This minireview summarises the recent advances in the synthetic strategies towards the formation of such non-covalent POM-loaded assemblies, shedding light on their key properties and the currently investigated applications. Four main emerging categories according to the nature of the conjugate are described: (i) POMs in metal-organic frameworks, (ii) POMs merged with cationic metal complexes, (iii) architectures generated with solely POM units and (iv) POMs assembled with organic molecular networks.

Polyoxometalate-Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Tunable Structure to Customized Storage Functionality

Self-assembly allows structures to organize themselves into regular patterns by using local forces to find the lowest-energy configuration. However, assembling organic and inorganic building blocks in an ordered framework remains challenging due to  difficulties in rationally interfacing two dissimilar materials. Herein, the ensemble of polyoxometalates (POMs) and cyclodextrins (CDs) as molecular building blocks (MBBs) has yielded two unprecedented POM-CD-MOFs, namely [PW₁₂O₄₀]^3- and α-CD MOF (POT-CD) as well as [P₁₀Pd_15.5O₅₀]^19- and γ-CD MOF (POP-CD), with distinct properties not shared by their isolated parent MBBs. Markedly, the POT-CD features a nontraditional enhanced Li storage behavior by virtue of a unique "amorphization and pulverization" process. This opens the door to a new generation of hybrid materials with tuned structures and customized functionalities.

Tuning the chaotropic effect as an assembly motif through one-electron transfer in a rhenium cluster

As small change as one electron transfer within the hydrophilic rhenium cluster [{Re₆Se₈}(CN)₆]^4−/3− induces dramatic alteration in supramolecular self-assembly properties with γ-cyclodextrin as a result of chaotropic effect driven process.

Hierarchical multi-shell 66-nuclei silver nanoclusters trapping subvalent Ag6 kernels

Hierarchical nano structures are hard to fabircate. Here, we present three novel hierarchical multi-shell 66-nuclei silver nanoclusters, trapping ultrasmall Ag64+ nano-fragments by nine MoO42- ions. This Ag6@(MoO4)9 core is further wrapped by an outer Ag60 shell. The Ag6 kernel evolves from reduction involving DMF solvent. Carboxylate ligands are very important in the modulation of the polygon patterns on the Ag60 shell.

Cyclodextrin-Driven Formation of Double Six-Ring (D6R) Silicate Cage: NMR Spectroscopic Characterization from Solution to Crystals

Identification and isolation of secondary building units (SBUs) from synthesis media of zeolites still represent a challenging task for chemists. The cage structure anion Si12O3012− known as the double six-ring (D6R) was synthesized from α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) mediated alkaline silicate solutions and conditions of its stability and reactivity in aqueous solution were studied by using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a novel polymorph of the hybrid complex K12Si12O30·2α-CD·nD2O (n ≈ 30–40), which crystallizes in the orthorhombic C2221 space group symmetry with a = 14.841(4) Å, b = 25.855(6) Å, and c = 41.91(1) Å. The supramolecular adduct of the silicate anion sandwiched by two α-CDs forms a perfect symmetry matching the H-bonding donor-acceptor system between the organic macrocycle and the D6R unit. The driving force of such a hybrid assembly has found to be strongly dependent on the nature of the cation present as large alkali counter ions (K+, Rb+ and Cs+), which stabilize the D6R structure acting as templates. Lastly, we provided the first 29Si MAS NMR measurement of 3Q Si in an isolated D6R unit that allows the verification of the linear correlation between the chemical shift and <SiOSi> bond angle for 3Q Si species in DnR cages (n = 3, 4, 6).

Host-Guest-Induced Environment Tuning of 3d Ions in a Polyoxopalladate Matrix

A series of unprecedented supramolecular associates of phenylarsonate-capped {M^II Pd^II ₁₂ O₈ }-type (M=Co, Ni and Zn) polyoxopalladates with α-cyclodextrins (α-CD) was obtained and characterized in the solid state (single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses), in aqueous solution (¹ H and ¹³ C NMR) and in the gas phase (ESI-MS). The non-covalent host-guest interactions between the organopolyoxoanions and α-CD rings alter the O₈ coordination environment of a 3d transition metal ion (M^II ) situated at the center of a cuboid polyoxododecapalladate shell. This synthetically controlled "chemical pressure" effectively induces axial distortion of the otherwise cubic polyoxopalladate environment between two trans-positioned α-CD moieties. Its effect on the magnetic properties and the electronic structure of the Co^II derivative was assessed in a combined SQUID magnetometry, EPR, X-ray magnetic circular/linear dichroism (XMCD/XMLD), and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy study.

The Chaotropic Effect as an Assembly Motif in Chemistry

Following up on scattered reports on interactions of conventional chaotropic ions (for example, I- , SCN- , ClO4- ) with macrocyclic host molecules, biomolecules, and hydrophobic neutral surfaces in aqueous solution, the chaotropic effect has recently emerged as a generic driving force for supramolecular assembly, orthogonal to the hydrophobic effect. The chaotropic effect becomes most effective for very large ions that extend beyond the classical Hofmeister scale and that can be referred to as superchaotropic ions (for example, borate clusters and polyoxometalates). In this Minireview, we present a continuous scale of water-solute interactions that includes the solvation of kosmotropic, chaotropic, and hydrophobic solutes, as well as the creation of void space (cavitation). Recent examples for the association of chaotropic anions to hydrophobic synthetic and biological binding sites, lipid bilayers, and surfaces are discussed.

Host-Guest Binding Hierarchy within Redox- and Luminescence-Responsive Supramolecular Self-Assembly Based on Chalcogenide Clusters and γ-Cyclodextrin

Water-soluble salts of anionic [Re₆ Q₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- (Q=S, Se, Te) chalcogenide octahedral rhenium clusters react with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) producing a new type of inclusion compounds. Crystal structures determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed supramolecular host-guest assemblies resulting from close encapsulations of the octahedral cluster within two γ-CDs. Interestingly, nature of the inner Q ligands influences strongly the host-guest conformation. The cluster [Re₆ S₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- interacts preferentially with the primary faces of the γ-CD while the bulkier clusters [Re₆ Se₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- and [Re₆ Te₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- exhibit specific interactions with the secondary faces of the cyclic host. Furthermore, analysis of the crystal packing reveals additional supramolecular interactions that lead to 2D infinite arrangements with [Re₆ S₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- or to 1D "bamboo-like" columns with [Re₆ Se₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- and [Re₆ Te₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- species. Solution studies, using multinuclear NMR methods, ESI-MS and Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) corroborates nicely the solid-state investigations showing that supramolecular pre-organization is retained in aqueous solution even in diluted conditions. Furthermore, ITC analysis showed that host-guest stability increases significantly ongoing from S to Te. At last, we report herein that deep inclusion alters significantly the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the octahedral clusters, allowing redox tuning and near IR luminescence enhancement.

Self-Assembly in Polyoxometalate and Metal Coordination-Based Systems: Synthetic Approaches and Developments

Utilizing new experimental approaches and gradual understanding of the underlying chemical processes has led to advances in the self-assembly of inorganic and metal–organic compounds at a very fast pace over the last decades. Exploitation of unveiled information originating from initial experimental observations has sparked the development of new families of compounds with unique structural characteristics and functionalities. The main source of inspiration for numerous research groups originated from the implementation of the design element along with the discovery of new chemical components which can self-assemble into complex structures with wide range of sizes, topologies and functionalities. Not only do self-assembled inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems belong to families of compounds with configurable structures, but also have a vast array of physical properties which reflect the chemical information stored in the various “modular” molecular subunits. The purpose of this short review article is not the exhaustive discussion of the broad field of inorganic and metal–organic chemical systems, but the discussion of some representative examples from each category which demonstrate the implementation of new synthetic approaches and design principles.

A HPLC-ICP-AES technique for the screening of [XW11NbO40]n− aqueous solutions

Induced chirality and reversal of phosphomolybdate cluster via modulating its interaction with cyclodextrins

Direct-induced chirality of a metal–oxide cluster by cyclodextrins was realized and the reversals of the induced Cotton signals were modulated by introducing a competitive guest and/or substituting by different cyclodextrins.
