Abstract
A new highly sensitive luminescent iridium(III) chemosensor, 1, was designed and synthesized for tandem detection of fluoride ions (F-) and aluminum ions (Al3+). This sensor 1 exhibited obvious luminesce quenching by hydrogen bond interactions with F-. In addition, the resulting 1-F complex can be further used to detect Al3+ through a luminesce enhancement. The detection limit (0.02 μM) of 1-F for Al3+ is far lower than the World Health Organization (7.41 μM) limit for drinking water. Importantly, chemosensor 1-F could be used to detect and quantify F- and Al3+ reversibly. This sensor achieved rapid detection of two ions, which relies on only one probe.

Abstract
A simple chemosensor YS based on coumarin group was designed and synthesized. Its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of cyanide the sensor showed an immediate visible change in color from colorless to pale yellow by naked-eyes and produced a strong blue fluorescence rapidly in DMSO/H2O (3:7, v/v). The detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor to CN- is down to 1.69×10-7M. In addition YS could show fluorescence turn-on response rapidly for Zn2+ over other metals ions such as Fe3+, Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ and Mg2+ in aqueous solutions. Notably, this sensor served as a molecular switch, which was controlled by Zn2+ and EDTA cyclically. Test strips based on YS were fabricated, which could act as a convenient and efficient CN- and Zn2+ test kit. This chemosensor could achieve the detection of two ions, which need not depend on two different sensors.

Abstract
In this study, a facile water-soluble fluorescence sensor 2-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)-amino)-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (ST) was synthesized via one-step reaction, and its fluorescence sensing performance for Al3+ both in aqueous solution and on paper substrate was evaluated. The results showed that ST exhibited an specific fluorescence "turn-on" response to Al3+ over other cations in aqueous solution as well as on the test paper. The limit of detection was found to be 3.2×10-7M, which revealed that the obtained Schiff-base based fluorescence chemosensor ST possessed a great potential for the rapid, quantitative and qualitative detection of Al3+.

Abstract
Metal ion recognition is of great significance in biological and environmental detection. So far, there is very few research related to the ferric ion sensing based on photoresponsive azobenzene derivatives. In this work, we report a highly selective fluorescent "turn-off" sensor for Fe3+ ions and the molecular sensing characteristics based on an azobenzene derivative, N-(3,4,5-octanoxyphenyl)-N'-4-[(4-hydroxyphenyl)azophenyl]1,3,4-oxadiazole (AOB-t8). The binding association constant was determined to be 6.07×103M-1 in ethanol and the stoichiometry ratio of 2:2 was obtained from Job's plot and MS spectra. The AOB-t8 might be likely to form the dimer structure through the chelation of ferric ion with the azobenzene moiety. Meanwhile, it was found that the photoisomerization property of AOB-t8 was regulated by the binding with Fe3+. With the chelation of Fe3+, the regulated molecular rigidity and the perturbed of electronic state and molecular geometry was suggested to be responsible for the accelerated isomerization of AOB-t8 to UV irradiation and the increased fluorescence lifetime of both trans- and cis-AOB-t8-Fe(III). Moreover, the reversible sensing of AOB-t8 was successfully observed by releasing the iron ion from AOB-t8-Fe(III) with the addition of citric acid.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent sensor, 1-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)urea (ocn) has been designed and applied as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for recognition of Al3+ in Tris-HCl (pH = 7.20) solution. The probe ocn exhibits an excellent selectivity to Al3+ over other examined metal ions, anions and amino acids with a prominent fluorescence 'turn-on' at 438 nm. ocn binds to Al3+ with a 2:1 binding stoichiometry and the detection limit was 0.3 μM. Furthermore, its capability of biological application was evaluated and the results showed that the sensor could be used to detect Al3+ in living cells.

Three naphthol Schiff base-type fluorescent sensors, 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)propane (L1), 1,3-Bis(1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L2) and 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L3), have been synthesized. Their recognition abilities for Al(3+) are studied by fluorescence spectra. Coordination with Al(3+) inhibited the CN isomerization of Schiff base which intensely increase the fluorescence of L1-L3. Possessing a suitable space coordination structure, L3 is a best selective probe for Al(3+) over other metal ions in MeOH-HEPES buffer (3/7, V/V, pH=6.6, 25°C, λem=435nm). A turn-on ratio over 140-fold is triggered with the addition of 1.0 equiv. Al(3+) to L3. The binding constant Ka of L3-Al(3+) is found to be 1.01×10(6.5)M(-1) in a 1:1 complex mode. The detection limit for Al(3+) is 0.05μM. Theoretical calculations have also been included in support of the configuration of the L3-Al(3+) complex. Importantly, the probe L3 has been successfully used for fluorescence imaging in colon cancer SW480 cells.

Abstract
A structurally modified quinazoline derivative (L) acts as highly selective chemosensor for Al(3+) ions in DMSO-H2O (1:9, v/v) over the other competitive metal ions. L shows a red shifted fluorescence after the addition of Al(3+) ions and later the further fluorescence enhancement is due to chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) through inhibition of photoinduced electron transfer (PET). This probe (L) detects Al(3+) ions as low as 9nM in DMSO-H2O (1:9, v/v) at biological pH. The non-cytotoxic probe (L) can efficiently detect the intercellular distribution of Al(3+) ions in living cells under a fluorescence microscope to exhibit its sensible applications in the biological systems.

Abstract
A pyrene based fluorescent probe, 3-methoxy-2-((pyren-2yl-imino)methyl)phenol (HL), was synthesized via simple one-pot reaction from inexpensive reagents. It exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity toward Al(3+) over other relevant metal ions and also displayed novel aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics in its aggregate/solid state. When bound with Al(3+) in 1:1 mode, a significant fluorescence enhancement with a turn-on ratio of over ∼200-fold was triggered via chelation-enhanced fluorescence through sensor complex (Al-L) formation, and amusingly excess addition of Al(3+), dramatic enhancement of fluorescence intensity over manifold through aggregate formation was observed. The 1:1 stoichiometry of the sensor complex (Al-L) was calculated from Job's plot based on UV-vis absorption titration. In addition, the binding site of sensor complex (Al-L) was well-established from the (1)H NMR titrations and also supported by the fluorescence reversibility by adding Al(3+) and EDTA sequentially. Intriguingly, the AIEE properties of HL may improve its impact and studied in CH3CN-H2O mixtures at high water content. To gain insight into the AIEE mechanism of the HL, the size and growth process of particles in different volume percentage of water and acetonitrile mixture were studied using time-resolved photoluminescence, dynamic light scattering, optical microscope, and scanning electron microscope. The molecules of HL are aggregated into ordered one-dimensional rod-shaped microcrystals that show obvious optical waveguide effect.

Abstract
A dual functional probe L based on rhodamine was devised and synthesized. Probe L can sense Pb(2+) and Cu(2+) in aqueous solution through two approaches: a significant fluorescence enhancement caused by Pb(2+) and a visible color change from colorless to orchid induced by Cu(2+). Competitive experiments showed that probe L had high fluorescence sensitivity for Pb(2+) and excellent colorimetric selectivity for Cu(2+) over many environmentally relevant ions. The mechanisms of L for sensing Pb(2+) and Cu(2+) have been well demonstrated by ESI-MS, (1)H NMR titration, IR, the crystal structure of L-Pb(2+) and density functional theory calculation of L-Cu(2+). In addition, fluorescence image detection of Pb(2+) in living cells displayed an enhanced fluorescence effect.

Abstract
The development of novel selective probes with high sensitivity for the detection of Al(3+) is widely considered an important research goal due to the importance of such probes in medicine, living systems and the environment. Here, we describe a new fluorescent probe, N'-(4-diethylamino-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (1), for Al(3+). Probe 1 was evaluated in a solution of acetonitrile/water (1:1 v/v). Compared with previously reported probes for Al(3+), probe 1 can be synthesized easily and in high yield. A Job plot confirmed that probe 1 is able to complex Al(3+) in a 1:1 ratio, and the binding constant was determined to be 4.25×10(8) m(-1). Moreover, the detection limit was as low as 6.7×10(-9) m, suggesting that probe 1 has a high sensitivity. Common coexistent metal ions, such as K(+), Co(2+), Ca(2+), Ba(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), Hg(2+), Ce(2+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Fe(3+), showed little or no interference in the detection of Al(3+) in solution, demonstrating the high selectivity of the probe. Finally, the ability of probe 1 to act as a fluorescent probe for Al(3+) in living systems was evaluated in Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed its utility. The results of this study suggest that 1 has appropriate properties to be developed for application as a fluorescent probe of Al(3+) for use in biological studies.

Abstract
A novel Schiff base fluorescent probe, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole-4-carbaldehyde (2'-methylquinoline-4'-formyl) hydrazone (PMHCH), for selective detection of Al(3+) has been designed and synthesized. Upon addition of various metal ions, the receptor only shows 286-fold enhancement of fluorescence intensity which might be attributed to a 1:1 stoichiometry between PMHCH and Al(3+) and the photo-induced electron transfer progress in the present of Al(3+) at 505n m. More importantly, the detection limit of PMHCH for Al(3+) could reach at 10(-7) M level.

Abstract
A new live-cell permeable, fluorescent probe comprised of a simple salicylimine-based Schiff base (SA1) has been developed for Al3+ with nano-molar sensitivity in aqueous media. SA1 was synthesized through a simple structural modification of a recently reported receptor SA2 by the incorporation of the N,Ndiethylamino (DEA) group as a fine controllable unit. This modification affects the performance of SA1 remarkably in terms of its sensitivity, water compatibility and efficiency as well as its mechanistic aspect. The presence of the DEA group in SA1 led to its dual channel emission due to the TICT state and at the same time its hydrophobic nature was also responsible for controlling the strong hydration of Al3+ ions in aqueous media which ultimately led to the high sensitivity of SA1 for Al3+. The structure of SA1 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and its binding with Al3+ was studied in detail using UVvisible, fluorescence and 1H NMR spectral studies along with mass determination. The effort of getting a single crystal of Al3+–SA1 led to single crystals of Cl−/NO3 − complexes of protonated SA1 which were fully characterized by their XRD studies.
