Abstract
The superbulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylimidazol-2-ylidene (IDip*Me) and its 4-methoxy analogue (IDip*OMe) reacted instantaneously with carbon disulfide to afford the corresponding imidazolium-2-dithiocarboxylate zwitterions in high yields. These new dithiolate ligands were fully characterized and their coordination chemistry toward common Re(i) and Ru(ii) metal sources was thoroughly investigated. Neutral [ReBr(CO)3(S2C·NHC)] chelates featured three facially-arranged carbonyl groups on a distorted octahedron, whereas cationic [RuCl(p-cymene)(S2C·NHC)]PF6 complexes displayed a piano-stool geometry. The molecular structures of the six new compounds revealed that the NHC·CS2 inner salts were highly flexible. Indeed, the torsion angle between their anionic and cationic moieties varied between ca. 63° in the free ligands and 3° in the ruthenium complexes. Concomitantly, the S-C-S bite angle underwent a contraction from 131° to 110-113° upon chelation. Computation of the %VBur parameter showed that the dithiocarboxylate unit of the NHC·CS2 betaines chiefly determined the steric requirements of the imidazolium moieties, irrespective of the metal center involved in the complexation. The replacement of the p-methyl substituents of IDip*Me with p-methoxy groups in IDip*OMe did not significantly affect the ligand bulkiness. The more electron-donating methoxy group led, however, to small changes in various IR wavenumbers used to probe the electron donor properties of the carbene moiety.

Abstract
An exceptionally hindered class of enantiopure NHC ligands has been developed. While racemic forms had previously been utilized, a scalable and practical route to the enantiopure form of this ligand class is described utilizing a Buchwald-Hartwig N,N-diarylation in a highly sterically demanding environment. Using this newly accessible ligand class, nickel-catalyzed enantioselective reductive coupling reactions of aldehydes and alkynes have been developed. These studies illustrate that the newly available NHC ligands are well suited for simultaneous control of regio- and enantioselectivity, even in cases with internal alkynes possessing only very subtle steric differences between two aliphatic substituents. The steric demand of the new ligand class enables a complementary regiochemical outcome compared with previously described enantioselective processes. Using this method, a number of allylic alcohol derivatives were efficiently obtained with high regioselectivity (up to >95:5) and high enantioselectivity (up to 94% ee). The reaction conditions can also be extended to the reaction of aldehydes and allenes, providing silyl-protected allylic alcohol derivatives possessing a terminal methylene substituent. Computational studies have explained the origin of the exceptional steric demand of this ligand class, the basis for enantioselectivity, and the cooperative relationship of the aldehyde, alkyne, and ligand in influencing enantioselectivity.

Abstract
The synthesis and co-ordination chemistry of a new 'bulky yet flexible' N-heterocyclic carbene ("IPaul") is reported. This carbene has spatially-defined steric impact; steric maps show that two quadrants are very bulky while the other two are quite open. The electronic properties of this carbene are very similar to those of other 1,3-diarylimidazol-2-ylidenes. Copper, silver, iridium, and nickel complexes of the new ligand have been prepared. In solution, the ligand adopts two different conformations, while X-ray crystallographic analyses of the transition metal complexes suggest that the syn-conformer is preferred in the solid state due to intermolecular interactions. The copper(i) chloride complex of this new ligand has been shown to be highly-active in the hydrosilylation of carbonyl compounds, when compared to the analogous IPr, IMes, IPr* and IPr*(OMe) complexes.

Abstract
This study presents the influence of various substituents on the photophysical features of heteroleptic copper(I) complexes bearing both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and dipyridylamine (dpa = dipyridylamine skeleton corresponding to ligand L1) ligands. The luminescent properties have been compared to our recently reported archetypal blue emitting [Cu(IPr)(dpa)][PF6] complex. The choice of the substituents on both ligands has been guided to explore the effect of the electron donor/acceptor and "push-pull" on the emission wavelengths and photoluminescence quantum yields. A selection of the best candidates in terms of their photophysical features were applied for developing the first blue light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on copper(I) complexes. The device analysis suggests that the main concern is the moderate redox stability of the complexes under high applied driving currents, leading to devices with moderate stabilities pointing to a proof-of-concept for further development. Nevertheless, under low applied driving currents the blue emission is stable, showing performance levels competitive to those reported for blue LECs based on iridium(III) complexes. Overall, this work provides valuable guidelines to tackle the design of enhanced NHC copper complexes for lighting applications in the near future.

Abstract
The portfolio of acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADACs) has been substantially expanded, owing to the synthesis of eleven new formamidinium salts, mostly of the type [(iPr2N)CH(NRR')][PF6], for use as immediate carbene precursors. The corresponding ADACs (iPr2N)C(NRR') were sufficiently stable for isolation in the case of NRR' = 2-methylpiperidino (13), 3-methylpiperidino (14), 4-methylpiperidino (15), morpholino (17) and NiPrPh (20), but had to be trapped in situ in the case of NRR' = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino (12) and NiPrMe (19). The tetraaryl-substituted ADACs (Ph2N)2C (22) and (Ph2N)C[N(C6F5)2] (24) also could only be generated and trapped in situ. Trapping with elemental selenium was particularly efficient, affording the corresponding selenourea derivative in all cases, whereas trapping with [{Rh(μ-Cl)(cod)}2] did not work for 12 and 24. The (77)Se NMR chemical shifts, δ((77)Se), of the selenourea compounds derived from the new ADACs lie in the range 450-760 ppm, which indicates a much higher electrophilicity and π-accepting capability of ADACs in comparison with NHCs, which typically exhibit δ((77)Se)<200 ppm. The extreme low-field shift of 758 ppm observed for 12Se can be rationalised by the results of DFT calculations, which revealed that ADAC 12 has a minimum energy conformation with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino unit perpendicular to the N2C plane, which suppresses the π donation of this amino group and causes an unusually low LUMO energy and high electrophilicity.

Abstract
The chemistry of Au(I) complexes with two types of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands has been explored, using the sterically less demanding dimethyl derivative Me2CAAC and the 2-adamantyl ligand AdCAAC. The conversion of (AdCAAC)AuCl into (AdCAAC)AuOH by treatment with KOH is significantly accelerated by the addition of tBuOH. (AdCAAC)AuOH is a convenient starting material for the high-yield syntheses of (AdCAAC)AuX complexes by acid/base and C-H activation reactions (X = OAryl, CF3CO2, N(Tf)2, C2Ph, C6F5, C6HF4, C6H2F3, CH2C(O)C6H4OMe, CH(Ph)C(O)Ph, CH2SO2Ph), while the cationic complexes [(AdCAAC)AuL]+ (L = CO, CN t Bu) and (AdCAAC)AuCN were obtained by chloride substitution from (AdCAAC)AuCl. The reactivity toward variously substituted fluoroarenes suggests that (AdCAAC)AuOH is able to react with C-H bonds with pKa values lower than about 31.5. This, together with the spectroscopic data, confirm the somewhat stronger electron-donor properties of CAAC ligands in comparison to imidazolylidene-type N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). In spite of this, the oxidation of Me2CAAC and AdCAAC gold compounds is much less facile. Oxidations proceed with C-Au cleavage by halogens unless light is strictly excluded. The oxidation of (AdCAAC)AuCl with PhICl2 in the dark gives near-quantitative yields of (AdCAAC)AuCl3, while [Au(Me2CAAC)2]Cl leads to trans-[AuCl2(Me2CAAC)2]Cl. In contrast to the chemistry of imidazolylidene-type gold NHC complexes, oxidation products containing Au-Br or Au-I bonds could not be obtained; whereas the reaction with CsBr3 cleaves the Au-C bond to give mixtures of [AdCAAC-Br]+[AuBr2]- and [(AdCAAC-Br)]+ [AuBr4]-, the oxidation of (AdCAAC)AuI with I2 leads to the adduct (AdCAAC)AuI·I2. Irrespective of the steric demands of the CAAC ligands, their gold complexes proved more resistant to oxidation and more prone to halogen cleavage of the Au-C bonds than gold(I) complexes of imidazole-based NHC ligands.

Abstract
The relationship between the NMR chemical shifts of phosphinidene and selenourea compounds and the π-accepting ability of the related carbene ligands has been investigated.
The electronic nature of the interaction of NHCs with metal centres is of interest when exploring their properties, how these properties influence those of metal complexes, and how these properties might depend on ligand structure. Selenourea and phosphinidene complexes have been proposed to allow the measurement of the π-accepting ability of NHCs, independent of their σ-donating ability, via the collection of 77Se or 31P NMR spectra, respectively. Herein, the synthesis and characterisation of selenoureas derived from a range of imidazol-2-ylidenes, 4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidenes and triazol-2-ylidenes are documented. Computational studies are used to explore the link between the shielding of the selenium centre and the electronic properties of the NHCs. Results show that δSe is correlated to the energy gap between a filled lone pair orbital on Se and the empty π* orbital corresponding to the Se–NHC bond. Bond energy decomposition analysis indicated no correlation between the orbital σ-contribution to bonding and the chemical shielding, while a good correlation was found between the π-contribution to bonding and the chemical shielding, confirming that this technique is indeed able to quantify the ability of NHCs to accept π-electron density. Calculations conducted on phosphinidene adducts yielded similar results. With the link between δSe and δP and π-back bonding ability clearly established, these compounds represent useful ways in which to fully understand and quantify this aspect of the electronic properties of NHCs.

by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand identity in
the hydrosilylation step and is preserved in the subsequent cross-coupling
reaction. This methodology affords streamlined access to functionalized
1,1-disubstituted alkenes with excellent regiocontrol.

We describe the coordination chemistry of the primary phosphine PH2C(O)NH2 (phosphinecarboxamide) to form the novel complexes W(CO)5(PH2C(O)NH2) (1) and cis-Mo(CO)4(PH2C(O)NH2)2 (2).
