Interfacial mode coupling as the origin of the enhancement of T(c) in FeSe films on SrTiO3

Spectroscopic evidence of superconductivity pairing at 83 K in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films

Single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO₃ substrate (FeSe/STO) have attracted much attention because of their possible record-high superconducting critical temperature (T_c) and distinct electronic structures. However, it has been under debate on how high its T_c can really reach due to the inconsistency of the results from different measurements. Here we report spectroscopic evidence of superconductivity pairing at 83 K in single-layer FeSe/STO films. By preparing high-quality single-layer FeSe/STO films, we observe strong superconductivity-induced Bogoliubov back-bending bands that extend to rather high binding energy ~ 100 meV by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements. They provide a new definitive benchmark of superconductivity pairing that is directly observed up to 83 K. Moreover, we find that the pairing state can be further divided into two temperature regions. These results indicate that either T_c as high as 83 K is achievable, or there is a pseudogap formation from superconductivity fluctuation in single-layer FeSe/STO films.

How high the superconducting transition temperature can reach in single layer FeSe/SrTiO₃ films has been under debate. Here, the authors use Bogoliubov back-bending bands as a benchmark and demonstrate that superconductivity pairing can be realized up to 83 K in this system.

Magic Doping and Robust Superconductivity in Monolayer FeSe on Titanates

The enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on titanates opens a fascinating pathway toward the rational design of high-temperature superconductors. Utilizing the state-of-the-art oxide plus chalcogenide molecular beam epitaxy systems in situ connected to a synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscope, epitaxial LaTiO3 layers with varied atomic thicknesses are inserted between monolayer FeSe and SrTiO3, for systematic modulation of interfacial chemical potential. With the dramatic increase of electron accumulation at the LaTiO3/SrTiO3 surface, providing a substantial surge of work function mismatch across the FeSe/oxide interface, the charge transfer and the superconducting gap in the monolayer FeSe are found to remain markedly robust. This unexpected finding indicate the existence of an intrinsically anchored "magic" doping within the monolayer FeSe systems.

Recent Advances in 2D Superconductors

The emergence of superconductivity in 2D materials has attracted much attention and there has been rapid development in recent years because of their fruitful physical properties, such as high transition temperature (T_c ), continuous phase transition, and enhanced parallel critical magnetic field (B_c ). Tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploring different physical parameters to figure out the mechanisms behind the unexpected superconductivity phenomena, including adjusting the thickness of samples, fabricating various heterostructures, tuning the carrier density by electric field and chemical doping, and so on. Here, different types of 2D superconductivity with their unique characteristics are introduced, including the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductivity in ultrathin films, high-T_c superconductivity in Fe-based and Cu-based 2D superconductors, unconventional superconductivity in newly discovered twist-angle bilayer graphene, superconductivity with enhanced B_c , and topological superconductivity. A perspective toward this field is then proposed based on academic knowledge from the recently reported literature. The aim is to provide researchers with a clear and comprehensive understanding about the newly developed 2D superconductivity and promote the development of this field much further.

Incommensurate smectic phase in close proximity to the high-Tc superconductor FeSe/SrTiO3

Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO₃, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists and gradually fades away with increasing film thickness, while it suddenly vanishes in monolayer FeSe, indicative of an abrupt smectic phase transition. Surface alkali-metal doping can suppress the smectic phase and induce high-T_c superconductivity in bilayer FeSe. Our observations provide evidence that the monolayer FeSe is in close proximity to the smectic phase, and its superconductivity is likely enhanced by this electronic instability as well.

The relation between enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO₃ and the large nematicity in multilayer FeSe on SrTiO₃ remains not well understood. Here, the authors observe a long-range smectic phase in bilayer FeSe films but vanishes in monolayer FeSe, providing a new instability to help enhance the superconductivity.

Autonomous Computing Materials

Conventional materials are reaching their limits in computation, sensing, and data storage capabilities, ushered in by the end of Moore's law, myriad sensing applications, and the continuing exponential rise in worldwide data storage demand. Conventional materials are also limited by the controlled environments in which they must operate, their high energy consumption, and their limited capacity to perform simultaneous, integrated sensing, computation, and data storage and retrieval. In contrast, the human brain is capable of multimodal sensing, complex computation, and both short- and long-term data storage simultaneously, with near instantaneous rate of recall, seamless integration, and minimal energy consumption. Motivated by the brain and the need for revolutionary new computing materials, we recently proposed the data-driven materials discovery framework, autonomous computing materials. This framework aims to mimic the brain's capabilities for integrated sensing, computation, and data storage by programming excitonic, phononic, photonic, and dynamic structural nanoscale materials, without attempting to mimic the unknown implementational details of the brain. If realized, such materials would offer transformative opportunities for distributed, multimodal sensing, computation, and data storage in an integrated manner in biological and other nonconventional environments, including interfacing with biological sensors and computers such as the brain itself.

Proximity control of interlayer exciton-phonon hybridization in van der Waals heterostructures

Van der Waals stacking has provided unprecedented flexibility in shaping many-body interactions by controlling electronic quantum confinement and orbital overlap. Theory has predicted that also electron-phonon coupling critically influences the quantum ground state of low-dimensional systems. Here we introduce proximity-controlled strong-coupling between Coulomb correlations and lattice dynamics in neighbouring van der Waals materials, creating new electrically neutral hybrid eigenmodes. Specifically, we explore how the internal orbital 1s-2p transition of Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs in monolayer tungsten diselenide resonantly hybridizes with lattice vibrations of a polar capping layer of gypsum, giving rise to exciton-phonon mixed eigenmodes, called excitonic Lyman polarons. Tuning orbital exciton resonances across the vibrational resonances, we observe distinct anticrossing and polarons with adjustable exciton and phonon compositions. Such proximity-induced hybridization can be further controlled by quantum designing the spatial wavefunction overlap of excitons and phonons, providing a promising new strategy to engineer novel ground states of two-dimensional systems.

Here, the authors demonstrate proximity-controlled strong-coupling between Coulomb correlations and lattice dynamics in neighbouring van der Waals materials (WSe₂ and a gypsum layer), creating electrically neutral hybrid exciton-phonon eigenmodes called excitonic Lyman polarons.

MgO surface lattice phonons observation during interstellar ice transition

Relevant information on the origins of the solar system and the early evolution of life itself can be derive from systematic and controlled exploration of water ice here on Earth. Therefore, over the last decades, a huge effort on experimental methodologies has been made to study the multiple crystal ice phases, which are observed outside our home-gravitational-potential. By employing (100)-oriented MgO lattice surface as a microcantilever sensor, we conducted the first ever study on the dynamics of the Structural Phase Transition at 185 K in water ice by means of coherent elastic scattering of electron diffraction. We estimate the amount of phonons caused by this transition applying precise quantum computing key tools, and resulting in a maximum value of 1.23 ± 0.02. Further applications of our microcantilever sensor were assessed using unambiguous mapping of the surface stress induced by the c([Formula: see text]) → p([Formula: see text]) Structural Phase Transition of the interstellar ice formulated on the Williamsom-Hall model. This development paves the way and thus establishes an efficient characterization tool of the surface mechanical strains of materials with potential applications arising from interstellar ice inclusive glaciers to the wide spectrum of solid-state physics.

Electron-plasmon interaction induced plasmonic-polaron band replication in epitaxial perovskite SrIrO3 films

Electron-boson interaction is fundamental to a thorough understanding of various exotic properties emerging in many-body physics. In photoemission spectroscopy, photoelectron emission due to photon absorption would trigger diverse collective excitations in solids, including the emergence of phonons, magnons, electron-hole pairs, and plasmons, which naturally provides a reliable pathway to study electron-boson couplings. While fingerprints of electron-phonon/-magnon interactions in this state-of-the-art technique have been well investigated, much less is known about electron-plasmon coupling, and direct observation of the band renormalization solely due to electron-plasmon interactions is extremely challenging. Here by utilizing integrated oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discover the long sought-after pure electron-plasmon coupling-induced low-lying plasmonic-polaron replica bands in epitaxial semimetallic SrIrO₃ films, in which the characteristic low carrier concentration and narrow bandwidth combine to provide a unique platform where the electron-plasmon interaction can be investigated kinematically in photoemission spectroscopy. This finding enriches the forms of electron band normalization on collective modes in solids and demonstrates that, to obtain a complete understanding of the quasiparticle dynamics in 5d electron systems, the electron-plasmon interaction should be considered on equal footing with the acknowledged electron-electron interaction and spin-orbit coupling.

Metal-Insulator Transition and Emergent Gapped Phase in the Surface-Doped 2D Semiconductor 2H-MoTe_{2}

Artificially created two-dimensional (2D) interfaces or structures are ideal for seeking exotic phase transitions due to their highly tunable carrier density and interfacially enhanced many-body interactions. Here, we report the discovery of a metal-insulator transition (MIT) and an emergent gapped phase in the metal-semiconductor interface that is created in 2H-MoTe_{2} via alkali-metal deposition. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we found that the electron-phonon coupling is strong at the interface as characterized by a clear observation of replica shake-off bands. Such strong electron-phonon coupling interplays with disorder scattering, leading to an Anderson localization of polarons which could explain the MIT. The domelike emergent gapped phase could then be attributed to a polaron extended state or phonon-mediated superconductivity. Our results demonstrate the capability of alkali-metal deposition as an effective method to enhance the many-body interactions in 2D semiconductors. The surface-doped 2H-MoTe_{2} is a promising candidate for realizing polaronic insulator and high-T_{c} superconductivity.

Angle, Spin, and Depth Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy on Quantum Materials

The role of X-ray based electron spectroscopies in determining chemical, electronic, and magnetic properties of solids has been well-known for several decades. A powerful approach is angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, whereby the kinetic energy and angle of photoelectrons emitted from a sample surface are measured. This provides a direct measurement of the electronic band structure of crystalline solids. Moreover, it yields powerful insights into the electronic interactions at play within a material and into the control of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom, central pillars of future solid state science. With strong recent focus on research of lower-dimensional materials and modified electronic behavior at surfaces and interfaces, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy has become a core technique in the study of quantum materials. In this review, we provide an introduction to the technique. Through examples from several topical materials systems, including topological insulators, transition metal dichalcogenides, and transition metal oxides, we highlight the types of information which can be obtained. We show how the combination of angle, spin, time, and depth-resolved experiments are able to reveal "hidden" spectral features, connected to semiconducting, metallic and magnetic properties of solids, as well as underlining the importance of dimensional effects in quantum materials.

Atomically Thin Superconductors

In recent years, atomically thin superconductors, including atomically thin elemental superconductors, single layer FeSe films, and few-layer cuprate superconductors, have been studied extensively. This hot research field is mainly driven by the discovery of significant superconductivity enhancement and high-temperature interface superconductivity in single-layer FeSe films epitaxially grown on SrTiO₃ substrates in 2012. This study has attracted tremendous research interest and generated more studies focusing on further enhancing superconductivity and finding the origin of the superconductivity. A few years later, research on atomically thin superconductors has extended to cuprate superconductors, unveiling many intriguing properties that have neither been proposed or observed previously. These new discoveries challenge the current theory regarding the superconducting mechanism of unconventional superconductors and indicate new directions on how to achieve high-transition-temperature superconductors. Herein, this exciting recent progress is briefly discussed, with a focus on the recent progress in identifying new atomically thin superconductors.

Growth, electronic structure and superconductivity of ultrathin epitaxial CoSi2films

We report growth, electronic structure and superconductivity of ultrathin epitaxial CoSi₂films on Si (111). At low coverages, preferred islands with 2, 5 and 6 monolayers height develop, which agrees well with the surface energy calculation. We observe clear quantum well states as a result of electronic confinement and their dispersion agrees well with density functional theory calculations, indicating weak correlation effect despite strong contributions from Co 3delectrons.Ex situtransport measurements show that superconductivity persists down to at least 10 monolayers, with reducedT_cbut largely enhanced upper critical field. Our study opens up the opportunity to study the interplay between quantum confinement, interfacial symmetry breaking and superconductivity in an epitaxial silicide film, which is technologically relevant in microelectronics.

Electronic Origin of Tc in Bulk and Monolayer FeSe

FeSe is classed as a Hund’s metal, with a multiplicity of d bands near the Fermi level. Correlations in Hund’s metals mostly originate from the exchange parameter J, which can drive a strong orbital selectivity in the correlations. The Fe-chalcogens are the most strongly correlated of the Fe-based superconductors, with dxy the most correlated orbital. Yet little is understood whether and how such correlations directly affect the superconducting instability in Hund’s systems. By applying a recently developed ab initio theory, we show explicitly the connections between correlations in dxy and the superconducting critical temperature Tc. Starting from the ab initio results as a reference, we consider various kinds of excursions in parameter space around the reference to determine what controls Tc. We show small excursions in J can cause colossal changes in Tc. Additionally we consider changes in hopping by varying the Fe-Se bond length in bulk, in the free standing monolayer M-FeSe, and M-FeSe on a SrTiO3 substrate (M-FeSe/STO). The twin conditions of proximity of the dxy state to the Fermi energy, and the strength of J emerge as the primary criteria for incoherent spectral response and enhanced single- and two-particle scattering that in turn controls Tc. Using c-RPA, we show further that FeSe in monolayer form (M-FeSe) provides a natural mechanism to enhance J. We explain why M-FeSe/STO has a high Tc, whereas M-FeSe in isolation should not. Our study opens a paradigm for a unified understanding what controls Tc in bulk, layers, and interfaces of Hund’s metals by hole pocket and electron screening cloud engineering.

Unusual Temperature Evolution of Quasiparticle Band Dispersion in Electron-Doped FeSe Films

The discovery of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in one-monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 has attracted tremendous attention. Subsequent studies suggested the importance of cooperation between intra-FeSe-layer and interfacial interactions to enhance Tc. However, the nature of intra-FeSe-layer interactions, which would play a primary role in determining the pairing symmetry, remains unclear. Here we have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of one-monolayer and alkaline-metal-deposited multilayer FeSe films on SrTiO3, and determined the evolution of quasiparticle band dispersion across Tc. We found that the band dispersion in the superconducting state deviates from the Bogoliubov-quasiparticle dispersion expected from the normal-state band dispersion with a constant gap size. This suggests highly anisotropic pairing originating from small momentum transfer and/or mass renormalization due to electron–boson coupling. This band anomaly is interpreted in terms of the electronic interactions within the FeSe layers that may be related to the high-Tc superconductivity in electron-doped FeSe.

Investigations of Electron-Electron and Interlayer Electron-Phonon Coupling in van der Waals hBN/WSe2/hBN Heterostructures by Photoluminescence Excitation Experiments

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with their unique physical properties are very promising for future applications in novel electronic devices. In TMDs monolayers, strong and opposite spin splittings of the energy gaps at the K points allow for exciting carriers with various combinations of valley and spin indices using circularly polarized light, which can further be used in spintronics and valleytronics. The physical properties of van der Waals heterostructures composed of TMDs monolayers and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers significantly depend on different kinds of interactions. Here, we report on observing both a strong increase in the emission intensity as well as a preservation of the helicity of the excitation light in the emission from hBN/WSe₂/hBN heterostructures related to interlayer electron-phonon coupling. In combined low-temperature (T = 7 K) reflectivity contrast and photoluminescence excitation experiments, we find that the increase in the emission intensity is attributed to a double resonance, where the laser excitation and the combined Raman mode A'₁ (WSe₂) + ZO (hBN) are in resonance with the excited (2s) and ground (1s) states of the A exciton in a WSe₂ monolayer. In reference to the 2s state, our interpretation is in contrast with previous reports, in which this state has been attributed to the hybrid exciton state existing only in the hBN-encapsulated WSe₂ monolayer. Moreover, we observe that the electron-phonon coupling also enhances the helicity preservation of the exciting light in the emission of all observed excitonic complexes. The highest helicity preservation of more than 60% is obtained in the emission of the neutral biexciton and negatively charged exciton (trion) in its triplet state. Additionally, to the best of our knowledge, the strongly intensified emission of the neutral biexciton XX⁰ at double resonance condition is observed for the first time.

Strain-stabilized superconductivity

Superconductivity is among the most fascinating and well-studied quantum states of matter. Despite over 100 years of research, a detailed understanding of how features of the normal-state electronic structure determine superconducting properties has remained elusive. For instance, the ability to deterministically enhance the superconducting transition temperature by design, rather than by serendipity, has been a long sought-after goal in condensed matter physics and materials science, but achieving this objective may require new tools, techniques and approaches. Here, we report the transmutation of a normal metal into a superconductor through the application of epitaxial strain. We demonstrate that synthesizing RuO₂ thin films on (110)-oriented TiO₂ substrates enhances the density of states near the Fermi level, which stabilizes superconductivity under strain, and suggests that a promising strategy to create new transition-metal superconductors is to apply judiciously chosen anisotropic strains that redistribute carriers within the low-energy manifold of d orbitals.

Interfacial Polarons in van der Waals Heterojunction of Monolayer SnSe2 on SrTiO3 (001)

Interfacial polarons have been demonstrated to play important roles in heterostructures containing polar substrates. However, most of polarons found so far are diffusive large polarons; the discovery and investigation of small polarons at interfaces are scarce. Herein, we report the emergence of interfacial polarons in monolayer SnSe₂ epitaxially grown on Nb-doped SrTiO₃ (STO) surface using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). ARPES spectra taken on this heterointerface reveal a nearly flat in-gap band correlated with a significant charge modulation in real space as observed with STM. An interfacial polaronic model is proposed to ascribe this in-gap band to the formation of self-trapped small polarons induced by charge accumulation and electron-phonon coupling at the van der Waals interface of SnSe₂ and STO. Such a mechanism to form interfacial polaron is expected to generally exist in similar van der Waals heterojunctions consisting of layered 2D materials and polar substrates.

Topological phonons in oxide perovskites controlled by light

Perovskite oxides exhibit a rich variety of structural phases hosting different physical phenomena that generate multiple technological applications. We find that topological phonons-nodal rings, nodal lines, and Weyl points-are ubiquitous in oxide perovskites in terms of structures (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral), compounds (BaTiO₃, PbTiO₃, and SrTiO₃), and external conditions (photoexcitation, strain, and temperature). In particular, in the tetragonal phase of these compounds, all types of topological phonons can simultaneously emerge when stabilized by photoexcitation, whereas the tetragonal phase stabilized by thermal fluctuations only hosts a more limited set of topological phonon states. In addition, we find that the photoexcited carrier concentration can be used to tune the topological phonon states and induce topological transitions even without associated structural phase changes. Overall, we propose oxide perovskites as a versatile platform in which to study topological phonons and their manipulation with light.

Direct Measurement of Electron-Phonon Coupling with Time-Resolved ARPES

Time- and angular- resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful technique to measure electron dynamics in solids. Recent advances in this technique have facilitated band and energy resolved observations of the effect that excited phonons, have on the electronic structure. Here, we show with the help of ab initio simulations that the Fourier analysis of the time-resolved measurements of solids with excited phonon modes enables the determination of the band- and mode-resolved electron-phonon coupling directly from the experimental data without any additional input from theory. Such an observation is not restricted to regions of strong electron-phonon coupling and does not require strongly excited or hot phonons, but can be employed to monitor the dynamical renormalization of phonons in driven phases of matter.

Observation of the polaronic character of excitons in a two-dimensional semiconducting magnet CrI3

Exciton dynamics can be strongly affected by lattice vibrations through electron-phonon coupling. This is rarely explored in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors. Focusing on bilayer CrI₃, we first show the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling through temperature-dependent photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy. We then report the observation of periodic broad modes up to the 8th order in Raman spectra, attributed to the polaronic character of excitons. We establish that this polaronic character is dominated by the coupling between the charge-transfer exciton at 1.96 eV and a longitudinal optical phonon at 120.6 cm⁻¹. We further show that the emergence of long-range magnetic order enhances the electron-phonon coupling strength by ~50% and that the transition from layered antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order tunes the spectral intensity of the periodic broad modes, suggesting a strong coupling among the lattice, charge and spin in two-dimensional CrI₃. Our study opens opportunities for tailoring light-matter interactions in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors.

Exciton dynamics can be strongly affected by lattice vibrations through electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling. Here, the authors show the presence of strong e-ph coupling in bilayer CrI₃ and observe a Raman feature with periodic broad modes up to the 8th order, attributed to the polaronic character of excitons.

Large Polarons as Key Quasiparticles in SrTiO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}-Based Heterostructures

Despite its simple structure and low degree of electronic correlation, SrTiO_{3} (STO) features collective phenomena linked to charge transport and, ultimately, superconductivity, that are not yet fully explained. Thus, a better insight into the nature of the quasiparticles shaping the electronic and conduction properties of STO is needed. We studied the low-energy excitations of bulk STO and of the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by Ti L_{3} edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In all samples, we find the hallmark of polarons in the form of intense dd+phonon excitations, and a decrease of the LO3-mode electron-phonon coupling when going from insulating to highly conducting STO single crystals and heterostructures. Both results are attributed to the dynamic screening of the large polaron self-induced polarization, showing that the low-temperature physics of STO and STO-based 2DEGs is dominated by large polaron quasiparticles.

Disparate Exciton-Phonon Couplings for Zone-Center and Boundary Phonons in Solid-State Graphite

The exciton-phonon coupling in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy. With ∼70  meV energy resolution, multiple low energy excitations associated with coupling to phonons can be clearly resolved in the RIXS spectra. Using resonance dependence and the closed form for RIXS cross section without considering the intermediate state mixing of phonon modes, the dimensionless coupling constant g is determined to be 5 and 0.35, corresponding to the coupling strength of 0.42  eV+/-20  meV and 0.20  eV+/-20  meV, for zone center and boundary phonons, respectively. The reduced g value for the zone-boundary phonon may be related to its double resonance nature.

Superconductivity in undoped BaFe2As2 by tetrahedral geometry design

Fe-based superconductors exhibit a diverse interplay between charge, orbital, and magnetic ordering. Variations in atomic geometry affect electron hopping between Fe atoms and the Fermi surface topology, influencing magnetic frustration and the pairing strength through changes of orbital overlap and occupancies. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a systematic approach to realize superconductivity without chemical doping in BaFe₂As₂, employing geometric design within an epitaxial heterostructure. We control both tetragonality and orthorhombicity in BaFe₂As₂ through superlattice engineering, which we experimentally find to induce superconductivity when the As-Fe-As bond angle approaches that in a regular tetrahedron. This approach to superlattice design could lead to insights into low-dimensional superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors.

Preformed Cooper Pairs in Layered FeSe-Based Superconductors

Superconductivity arises from two distinct quantum phenomena: electron pairing and long-range phase coherence. In conventional superconductors, the two quantum phenomena generally take place simultaneously, while in the underdoped high- T_{c} cuprate superconductors, the electron pairing occurs at higher temperature than the long-range phase coherence. Recently, whether electron pairing is also prior to long-range phase coherence in single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO_{3} substrate is under debate. Here, by measuring Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, we unambiguously reveal a pseudogap behavior below T_{p}∼60  K in two kinds of layered FeSe-based superconductors with quasi2D nature. In the pseudogap regime, a weak diamagnetic signal and a remarkable Nernst effect are also observed, which indicates that the observed pseudogap behavior is related to superconducting fluctuations. These works confirm that strong phase fluctuation is an important character in the 2D iron-based superconductors as widely observed in high-T_{c} cuprate superconductors.

On the Remarkable Superconductivity of FeSe and Its Close Cousins

Emergent electronic phenomena in iron-based superconductors have been at the forefront of condensed matter physics for more than a decade. Much has been learned about the origins and intertwined roles of ordered phases, including nematicity, magnetism, and superconductivity, in this fascinating class of materials. In recent years, focus has been centered on the peculiar and highly unusual properties of FeSe and its close cousins. This family of materials has attracted considerable attention due to the discovery of unexpected superconducting gap structures, a wide range of superconducting critical temperatures, and evidence for nontrivial band topology, including associated spin-helical surface states and vortex-induced Majorana bound states. Here, we review superconductivity in iron chalcogenide superconductors, including bulk FeSe, doped bulk FeSe, FeTe1−xSex, intercalated FeSe materials, and monolayer FeSe and FeTe1−xSex on SrTiO3. We focus on the superconducting properties, including a survey of the relevant experimental studies, and a discussion of the different proposed theoretical pairing scenarios. In the last part of the paper, we review the growing recent evidence for nontrivial topological effects in FeSe-related materials, focusing again on interesting implications for superconductivity.

Interfacial Superconductivity in FeSe Ultrathin Films on SrTiO_{3} Probed by In Situ Independently Driven Four-Point-Probe Measurements

We investigated the superconducting transport properties of the one-unit-cell FeSe ultrathin films epitaxially grown on undoped SrTiO_{3}(001) (STO) with a well-defined surface structure by in situ independently-driven four-point-probe measurements. Our results unambiguously revealed the detection of the two-dimensional electrical conduction of the films without parallel conduction through the underlying substrate, both in the normal and superconducting states. The monolayer film exhibited a superconducting transition at an onset temperature of 40 K. Surprisingly, the onset of superconductivity was constantly observed at 40 K even for three- and five-unit-cell-thick FeSe films, even though the normal resistivity decreased with increasing thickness. These results agree with the picture of the interfacial superconductivity, where only the FeSe/STO interface and/or the adjacent first layer of FeSe becomes superconducting while the upper layers stay in the normal metallic state. The observed T_{c} is much lower than that reported by a previous in situ transport measurement for FeSe/Nb:STO but consistent with the results obtained by ex situ measurements for FeSe-undoped STO with a capping layer. This suggests that the capping layer is not an essential factor to limit T_{c}. We rather propose that the charge transfer from the doped substrate has a key role to achieve the higher temperature superconductivity in the one-unit-cell FeSe.

Superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3: a review from the perspective of electron-phonon coupling

Single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3, with the highest superconducting transition temperature (TC) among all the iron-based superconductors, serves as an ideal platform for studying the microscopic mechanisms of high-TCsuperconductivity. The significant role of interfacial coupling has been widely recognized, while the precise nature of theTCenhancement remains open. In this review, we focus on the investigations of the interfacial coupling in FeSe/SrTiO3from the perspective of electron-phonon coupling (EPC). The main content will include an overview of the experimental measurements associated with different theoretical models and arguments about the EPC. Especially, besides the discussions of EPC based on the measurements of electronic states, we will emphasize the analyses based on phonon measurements. A uniform picture about the nature of the EPC and its relation to theTCenhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3has still not achieved, which should be the key for further studies aiming to the in-depth understanding of high-TCsuperconductivity and the discovery of new superconductors with even enhancedTC.

Anharmonic Eigenvectors and Acoustic Phonon Disappearance in Quantum Paraelectric SrTiO_{3}

Pronounced anomalies in the SrTiO_{3} dynamical structure factor, S(Q,E), including the disappearance of acoustic phonon branches at low temperatures, were uncovered with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and simulations. The striking effect reflects anharmonic couplings between acoustic and optic phonons and the incipient ferroelectric instability near the quantum critical point. It is rationalized using a first-principles renormalized anharmonic phonon approach, pointing to nonlinear Ti-O hybridization causing unusual changes in real-space phonon eigenvectors, frequencies, group velocities, and scattering phase space. Our method is general and establishes how T dependences beyond the harmonic regime, assessed by INS mapping of large reciprocal-space volumes, provide real-space insights into anharmonic atomic dynamics near phase transitions.

Picoscale structural insight into superconductivity of monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3

Remarkable enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (T c) has been observed for monolayer (ML) FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. The atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface is an important determinant of both the magnetic and interfacial electron-phonon interactions and is a key ingredient to understanding its high-T c superconductivity. We resolve the atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface through a complementary analysis of scanning transmission electron microscopy and in situ surface x-ray diffraction. We find that the interface is more strongly bonded for a particular registration, which leads to a coherently strained ML. We also determine structural parameters, such as the distance between ML FeSe and the oxide, Se─Fe─Se bond angles, layer-resolved distances between Fe─Se, and registry of the FeSe lattice relative to the oxide. This picoscale structure determination provides an explicit structural framework and constraint for theoretical approaches addressing the high-T c mechanism in FeSe/SrTiO3.

Bosonic Mode and Impurity-Scattering in Monolayer Fe(Te,Se) High-Temperature Superconductors

The electron pairing mechanism has always been one of the most challenging problems in high-temperature superconductors. Fe(Te,Se), as the superconductor with intrinsic topological property, may host Majorana bound states and has attracted tremendous interest. While in bulk Fe(Te,Se) the pairing mechanism has been experimentally investigated, it remains little understood in its two-dimensional limit counterpart. Here, by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we show clear evidence of the bosonic mode Ω beyond the superconducting gap Δ in monolayer FeTe_0.5Se_0.5/SrTiO₃(001) high-temperature superconductor. Statistically, Ω shows an obvious anticorrelation with Δ and appears below 2Δ, consistent with the spin-excitation nature. Furthermore, the in-gap bound states induced by two types of magnetically different impurities support the sign-reversing pairing scenario. Our results not only suggest that the spin-excitation-like bosonic mode within a sign-reversing pairing plays an essential role in monolayer FeTe_0.5Se_0.5/SrTiO₃(001) but also offer the crucial information for investigating the high-temperature superconductivity in interfacial iron selenides.

Observation of Discrete Conventional Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon States in the Vortex Core of Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO_{3}

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we studied the vortex states of single-layer FeSe film on a SrTiO_{3} (100) substrate, and the local behaviors of superconductivity at sample boundaries. We clearly observed multiple discrete Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states in the vortex core, and quantitative analysis shows their energies well follow the formula: E=μΔ^{2}/E_{F}, where μ is a half integer (±1/2,±3/2,±5/2…) and Δ is the mean superconducting gap over the Fermi surface. Meanwhile, a fully gapped spectrum without states near zero bias is observed at the [110]_{Fe} oriented boundary of 1 and 2 ML FeSe films, and atomic step edge of 1 ML FeSe. Accompanied with theoretical calculations, our results indicate an s-wave pairing without sign change in the high-T_{C} FeSe/SrTiO_{3} superconductor.

Exploring High Transition Temperature Superconductivity in a Freestanding or SrTiO_{3}-Supported CoSb Monolayer

As a two-dimensional entity, FeSe has been widely explored to harbor high transition temperature (high-T_{c}) superconductivity in diverse physical settings; yet to date, the underlying superconducting mechanisms are still under active debate. Here we use first-principles approaches to identify a chemically different yet structurally identical counterpart of FeSe, namely, monolayered CoSb, which is shown to be an attractive candidate to harbor high-T_{c} superconductivity as well. We first show that a freestanding CoSb monolayer can adopt the FeSe-like layered structure, even though its known bulk phase has no resemblance to layering. Next, we demonstrate that such a CoSb monolayer possesses superconducting properties comparable with or superior to FeSe, a striking finding that can be attributed to the isovalency nature of the two systems. More importantly, the layered CoSb structure can be stabilized on SrTiO_{3}(001), offering appealing alternative platforms for realizing high-T_{c} superconductivity beyond the well-established Cu- and Fe-based superconducting families. CoSb/SrTiO_{3}(001) also exhibits distinctly different magnetic properties from FeSe/SrTiO_{3}(001), which should provide a crucial new angle to elucidate the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these and related systems.

Controlling a Van Hove singularity and Fermi surface topology at a complex oxide heterostructure interface

The emergence of saddle-point Van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the density of states, accompanied by a change in Fermi surface topology, Lifshitz transition, constitutes an ideal ground for the emergence of different electronic phenomena, such as superconductivity, pseudo-gap, magnetism, and density waves. However, in most materials the Fermi level, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${E}_{{\rm{F}}}$$\end{document}EF, is too far from the VHS where the change of electronic topology takes place, making it difficult to reach with standard chemical doping or gating techniques. Here, we demonstrate that this scenario can be realized at the interface between a Mott insulator and a band insulator as a result of quantum confinement and correlation enhancement, and easily tuned by fine control of layer thickness and orbital occupancy. These results provide a tunable pathway for Fermi surface topology and VHS engineering of electronic phases.

A singularity in a material’s density of states at the Fermi energy can drive the formation of unconventional electronic phases. Here the authors show a Van Hove singularity is tunable across the Fermi energy in an oxide heterostructure, leading to enhanced electronic correlations.

Dichotomy of superconductivity between monolayer FeS and FeSe

The discovery of high-temperature (T c) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question: Whether high T c is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with T c comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in situ topotactic reaction and molecular-beam epitaxy. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeS and FeSe revealed marked similarities in the electronic structure, such as heavy electron doping and interfacial electron-phonon coupling, both of which have been regarded as possible sources of high T c in FeSe. However, surprisingly, high-T c superconductivity is absent in monolayer FeS. This is linked to the weak superconducting pairing in electron-doped multilayer FeS in which the interfacial effects are absent. Our results strongly suggest that the cross-interface electron-phonon coupling enhances T c only when it cooperates with the pairing interaction inherent to the superconducting layer. This finding provides a key insight to explore heterointerface high-T c superconductors.

In-plane rotation and transition from rectification to bipolar resistive switching in ZnO/SrTiO3:Nb heterojunctions by substrate pretreatment

The growth behavior and electrical transport properties of ZnO films was found to be strongly dependent on the deionized water soaking treatment of 0.7 wt% (111) SrTiO3:Nb substrates. Comparing the ZnO films on soaked SrTiO3:Nb substrates with those on unsoaked ones, the out-of-plane orientation of ZnO films are both along the c-axis, while there is an in-plane rotation of ZnO thin films. According to the variable frequency capacitance-voltage measurements, a much higher interface state density is found in the ZnO/soaked-SrTiO3:Nb heterojunction than that in the ZnO/unsoaked-SrTiO3:Nb heterojunction. Moreover, a rectification and bipolar resistive switching effect were observed in the ZnO/unsoaked-SrTiO3:Nb and ZnO/soaked-SrTiO3:Nb heterojunctions, respectively. The transition from rectification to a bipolar resistive switching effect can be ascribed to an increase of oxygen vacancies, the migration of which plays an important part in the resistive switching.

Temperature-dependent optical properties of self-doped superconducting Fe-pnictide, Sr2VO3FeAs

We performed an infrared spectroscopic study on a single crystal of Sr₂VO₃FeAs grown by a self-flux method. This layered material system consists of two alternative layers of [SrVO₃]^-1 and [SrFeAs]⁺¹. Since the typical size of single crystalline Sr₂VO₃FeAs samples is 200 [Formula: see text] 200 [Formula: see text] 10 [Formula: see text]m³ an optical study on this material is challenging. We observed an additional interband transition around 1000 cm^-1, which is absent in other doped Ba-122 Fe-pnictides. The origin of this additional transition is not clearly known yet. We also observed a hidden Fermi liquid behavior. Interestingly, we observed a Fano line-shaped phonon which appears near 555 cm^-1 below 200 K and shows a strong blue-shift when the temperature is lowered. The amplitude, width, and asymmetric Fano parameter of this phonon show anomalies at 150 K, which are probably related to an electronic phase observed below 155 K recently by an NMR study (Ok et al 2017 Nat. Commun. 8 2167). Our finding may help to understand the electronic phase observed previously in the same material.

Highly-Tunable Crystal Structure and Physical Properties in FeSe-Based Superconductors

Here, crystal structure, electronic structure, chemical substitution, pressure-dependent superconductivity, and thickness-dependent properties in FeSe-based superconductors are systemically reviewed. First, the superconductivity versus chemical substitution is reviewed, where the doping at Fe or Se sites induces different effects on the superconducting critical temperature (Tc). Meanwhile, the application of high pressure is extremely effective in enhancing Tc and simultaneously induces magnetism. Second, the intercalated-FeSe superconductors exhibit higher Tc from 30 to 46 K. Such an enhancement is mainly caused by the charge transfer from the intercalated organic and inorganic layer. Finally, the highest Tc emerging in single-unit-cell FeSe on the SrTiO3 substrate is discussed, where electron-phonon coupling between FeSe and the substrate could enhance Tc to as high as 65 K or 100 K. The step-wise increment of Tc indicates that the synergic effect of carrier doping and electron-phonon coupling plays a critical role in tuning the electronic structure and superconductivity in FeSe-based superconductors.

Polaronic Trions at the MoS2 /SrTiO3 Interface

The reduced electrical screening in 2D materials provides an ideal platform for realization of exotic quasiparticles, that are robust and whose functionalities can be exploited for future electronic, optoelectronic, and valleytronic applications. Recent examples include an interlayer exciton, where an electron from one layer binds with a hole from another, and a Holstein polaron, formed by an electron dressed by a sea of phonons. Here, a new quasiparticle is reported, "polaronic trion" in a heterostructure of MoS₂ /SrTiO₃ (STO). This emerges as the Fröhlich bound state of the trion in the atomically thin monolayer of MoS₂ and the very unique low energy soft phonon mode (≤7 meV, which is temperature and field tunable) in the quantum paraelectric substrate STO, arising below its structural antiferrodistortive (AFD) phase transition temperature. This dressing of the trion with soft phonons manifests in an anomalous temperature dependence of photoluminescence emission leading to a huge enhancement of the trion binding energy (≈70 meV). The soft phonons in STO are sensitive to electric field, which enables field control of the interfacial trion-phonon coupling and resultant polaronic trion binding energy. Polaronic trions could provide a platform to realize quasiparticle-based tunable optoelectronic applications driven by many body effects.

Analyzing scanning tunneling spectroscopy for Fe-based superconductors and extracting sample density of states

We extract the density of states (DOS) from the scanning tunneling spectroscopy data for Ba_1-x K _x Fe₂As₂ superconductor. The obtained sample DOS is composed of two ordinary s-wave types from the band at [Formula: see text] point and a linear-like DOS within the s-wave gap from the band at M point in the Brillouin zone, and is consistent with the corresponding data from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We clarify that the major peak of the tunneling conductance is not related to the DOS but is rather the effect of nonequilibrium coherent tunneling including all coherent spins in the tip and sample.

Dichotomy of the photo-induced 2-dimensional electron gas on SrTiO3 surface terminations

Oxide materials are important candidates for the next generation of electronics due to a wide array of desired properties, which they can exhibit alone or when combined with other materials. While SrTiO₃ (STO) is often considered a prototypical oxide, it, too, hosts a wide array of unusual properties, including a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), which can form at the surface when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Using layer-by-layer growth of high-quality STO films, we show that the 2DEG only forms with the SrO termination and not with the TiO₂ termination, contrary to expectation. This dichotomy of the observed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra is similarly seen in BaTiO₃ (BTO), in which the 2DEG is only observed for BaO-terminated films. These results will allow for a deeper understanding and better control of the electronic structure of titanate films, substrates, and heterostructures.

Synergetic Behavior in 2D Layered Material/Complex Oxide Heterostructures

The marriage between a 2D layered material (2DLM) and a complex transition metal oxide (TMO) results in a variety of physical and chemical phenomena that cannot be achieved in either material alone. Interesting recent discoveries in systems such as graphene/SrTiO₃ , graphene/LaAlO₃ /SrTiO₃ , graphene/ferroelectric oxide, MoS₂ /SrTiO₃ , and FeSe/SrTiO₃ heterostructures include voltage scaling in field-effect transistors, charge state coupling across an interface, quantum conductance probing of the electrochemical activity, novel memory functions based on charge traps, and greatly enhanced superconductivity. In this context, various properties and functionalities appearing in numerous different 2DLM/TMO heterostructure systems are reviewed. The results imply that the multidimensional heterostructure approach based on the disparate material systems leads to an entirely new platform for the study of condensed matter physics and materials science. The heterostructures are also highly relevant technologically as each constituent material is a promising candidate for next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Spectroscopic Imaging of Quasiparticle Bound States Induced by Strong Nonmagnetic Scatterings in One-Unit-Cell FeSe/SrTiO_{3}

The absence of holelike Fermi pockets in the heavily electron-doped iron selenides (HEDISs) challenges the s_{±}-wave pairing originally proposed for iron pnictides, which consists of opposite signs of the gap function on electron and hole pockets. While the HEDIS compounds have been investigated extensively, a consistent description of the superconducting pairing therein is still lacking. Here, by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we study the effects of strong scatterings from nonmagnetic Pb adatoms on the epitaxially grown HEDIS, one-unit-cell FeSe/SrTiO_{3}(001). Systematic tunneling spectra measured on the Pb adatoms show comprehensive signals of quasiparticle bound states, which can be well explained theoretically within the sign-reversing pairing scenarios. The finding implies that, in addition to previously detected phonons, spin fluctuations play an important role in driving the Cooper pairing in FeSe/SrTiO_{3}(001). The sign reversal in the gap function we revealed here is a significant ingredient in a unified understanding of the high-temperature superconductivity in HEDISs.

Coexistence of Superconductivity with Enhanced Charge Density Wave Order in the Two-Dimensional Limit of TaSe2

Bulk 2H-TaSe₂ is a model charge density wave (CDW) metal with superconductivity emerging at extremely low temperature (T_c = 0.1 K). Here, by first-principles calculations including the explicit calculation of the screened Coulomb interaction, we demonstrate enhanced superconductivity in the CDW state of monolayer 1H-TaSe₂ observed in recent experiments. Its ground-state 3 × 3 CDW phase features triangular clustering of Ta atoms and possesses a large electron-phonon coupling of λ = 0.74, yielding an order of magnitude higher superconducting T_c compared to the bulk. Upon lowering the thickness from bulk to monolayer TaSe₂, the CDW intensifies with slightly decreased Fermi-level density of states, while superconductivity gets boosted via a largely increased intrinsic electron-phonon coupling strength, which overcomes both the CDW effect and naturally reinforced Coulomb repulsion. These results uncover the simultaneously enhanced CDW and superconducting orders in the two-dimensional limit for the first time and have key implications for other CDW metals like 2H-TaS₂.

Manipulating the particle-hole symmetry of quasiparticle bound states in geometric-size-varying Fe clusters on one-unit-cell FeSe/SrTiO3(0 0 1)

The particle-hole symmetry (PHS) of quasiparticle bound states, which is generally expected in theory, is present or absent experimentally in a seemingly irregular manner, with the physical origin little understood yet. Here, we report a study on the bound states induced by Fe clusters with different sizes on one-unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe/SrTiO₃(0 0 1) by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Statistically, on the larger-scale cluster, a pair of bias-symmetric minipeaks are detected within the superconducting-gap energies. As increasing temperature, the minipeak states show negligible energy dispersion. The temperature-independent bias-symmetric minipeaks are identified as the quasiparticle bound states that preserve the PHS. However, on the smaller-scale cluster, the bound state appears as a single resonance instead. These results reveal a geometric-size-tuning effect of the PHS, which may help reconcile the contradiction between the superconductivity theory and the PHS-breaking experiments.

Ultrafast transition between exciton phases in van der Waals heterostructures

Heterostructures of atomically thin van der Waals bonded monolayers have opened a unique platform to engineer Coulomb correlations, shaping excitonic^1-3, Mott insulating⁴ or superconducting phases^5,6. In transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures⁷, electrons and holes residing in different monolayers can bind into spatially indirect excitons^1,3,8-11 with a strong potential for optoelectronics^11,12, valleytronics^1,3,13, Bose condensation¹⁴, superfluidity^14,15 and moiré-induced nanodot lattices¹⁶. Yet these ideas require a microscopic understanding of the formation, dissociation and thermalization dynamics of correlations including ultrafast phase transitions. Here we introduce a direct ultrafast access to Coulomb correlations between monolayers, where phase-locked mid-infrared pulses allow us to measure the binding energy of interlayer excitons in WSe₂/WS₂ hetero-bilayers by revealing a novel 1s-2p resonance, explained by a fully quantum mechanical model. Furthermore, we trace, with subcycle time resolution, the transformation of an exciton gas photogenerated in the WSe₂ layer directly into interlayer excitons. Depending on the stacking angle, intra- and interlayer species coexist on picosecond scales and the 1s-2p resonance becomes renormalized. Our work provides a direct measurement of the binding energy of interlayer excitons and opens the possibility to trace and control correlations in novel artificial materials.

Detection of Bosonic Mode as a Signature of Magnetic Excitation in One-Unit-Cell FeSe on SrTiO3

A "fingerprint" of Cooper pairing mediated by collective bosonic excitation mode is the reconstruction of the quasiparticle-density-of-states (DOS) spectrum with an additional "dip-hump" structure located outside the superconducting coherence peak. Here, we report an in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of one-unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe film on a SrTiO₃(001) substrate. In the quasiparticle-DOS spectrum, the bosonic excitation mode characterized by the dip-hump structure is detected outside the larger superconducting gap. Statistically, the excitation mode shows an anticorrelation with pairing strength in magnitude and yields an energy scale upper-bounded by twice the superconducting gap. The observation coincides with the characteristics of magnetic resonance in cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, the local response of superconducting spectra to magnetically distinct Se defects all exhibits the induced in-gap quasiparticle bound states, indicating an unconventional sign-reversing pairing over the Fermi surface in 1-UC FeSe. These results clarify the magnetic nature of the bosonic excitation mode and reveal a signature of electron-magnetic-excitation coupling in 1-UC FeSe/SrTiO₃(001) besides the previously established pairing channel of electron-phonon interaction.

Evidence for d-Wave Superconductivity in Single Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Probed by Quasiparticle Scattering Off Step Edges

The de Gennes extrapolation length is a direction dependent measure of the spatial evolution of the pairing gap near the boundary of a superconductor and thus provides a viable means to probe its symmetry. It is expected to be infinite and isotropic for plain s-wave pairing, and finite and anisotropic for d-wave. Here, we synthesize single-layer FeSe films on SrTiO₃(001) (STO) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy and measure the de Gennes extrapolation length by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We find a 40% reduction of the superconducting gap near specular [110]_Fe edges, yielding an extrapolation length of 8.0 nm. However, near specular [010]_Fe edges, the extrapolation length is nearly infinite. These findings are consistent with a phase changing pairing with 2-fold symmetry, indicating d-wave superconductivity. This is further supported by the presence of in-gap states near the specular [110]_Fe edges, but not the [010]_Fe edges. This work provides direct experimental evidence for d-wave superconductivity in single-layer FeSe/STO and demonstrates quasiparticle scattering at boundaries to be a viable phase sensitive probe of pairing symmetry in Fe-based superconductors.

Anomalous isotope effect in iron-based superconductors

The role of electron-phonon interactions in iron-based superconductor is currently under debate with conflicting experimental reports on the isotope effect. To address this important issue, we employ the renormalization-group method to investigate the competition between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in these materials. The renormalization-group analysis shows that the ground state is a phonon-dressed unconventional superconductor: the dominant electronic interactions account for pairing mechanism while electron-phonon interactions are subdominant. Because of the phonon dressing, the isotope effect of the critical temperature can be normal or reversed, depending on whether the retarded intra- or inter-band interactions are altered upon isotope substitutions. The connection between the anomalous isotope effect and the unconventional pairing symmetry is discussed at the end.
