Genesis, challenges and opportunities for colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals

Interfacial Regulation toward Efficient CsPbBr3 Quantum Dot-Based Inverted Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Inverted perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) based on quantum dots (QDs) are some of the most promising candidates for next-generation lighting and display applications. Due to the strong fluorescence quenching caused by zinc oxide, high performance in such inverted devices remains challenging. Here, we report an efficient inverted green CsPbBr3 QDs LED using an emitting buffer layer. Ultrathin CsPbBr3 QD emitters act as the buffer layer to reduce the interface luminescence quenching reaction at the ZnO/upper emitting layer interface, increasing the probability of exciton recombination within the emissive layer and regulating the charge transport, leading to effective carrier recombination. The resulting device exhibits an external quantum efficiency of 13.1%, enhanced by about 4.7 times compared with that without a buffer layer device. This work provides a path to fabricating high-performance inverted PeLEDs.

Deep-blue narrow-band emissive cesium europium bromide perovskite nanocrystals with record high emission efficiency for wide-color-gamut backlight displays

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are highly promising for backlighting display applications due to their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and wide color gamut values. However, the practical applications of blue emitters are limited due to the toxicity of lead, unstable structure, and unsatisfactory PLQY. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of divalent europium-based perovskite CsEuBr3 NCs using a modified hot injection method. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the CsEuBr3 NCs display a deep-blue emission at 443 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 28.5 nm, a color purity of 99.61%, and a record high PLQY of 93.51% for deep-blue narrow-band emissive lead-free perovskite NCs as far as we know. The emission mechanism of CsEuBr3 NCs is proved through first-principles calculations and spectral analysis. Notably, the CsEuBr3 NCs exhibit remarkable stability when exposed to high temperature, UV irradiation, and long-term sealed storage. The incorporation of CsEuBr3 NCs into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) serving as a converter is utilized for white light-emitting devices (WLEDs). WLEDs for backlight displays achieves a wide color gamut of 127.1% of the National Television System Committee standard (NTSC), 94.9% coverage of the ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020 (Rec.2020), and their half-lifetime is up to 1677 h, providing a promising pathway for highly efficient, environment-friendly and practical liquid crystal display backlights.

Cognitively Driven Autonomous Flow Chemistry for Producing On-Demand Perovskite Quantum Dots Via Advanced Closed-Loop Feedback Control

Recent developments in the synthesis of hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots (HP-QDs) through compositional adjustments have highlighted their potential applications in the fields of photovoltaics and light sources due to their unique optoelectronic properties. However, traditional methods to fine-tune their composition involve repetitive, labor-intensive, and costly processes. Herein, the utilization of a continuous flow chemistry approach is developed, in combination with a Proportional-Integral (PI) feedback control system as an effective method for producing on-demand methylammonium lead bromoiodide (MAPbBrx I3-x ) HP-QDs. The PI feedback control allows for real-time optimization of the flow rates of halide precursor solutions (halide PSs), enabling the precise tuning of the emission wavelength of HP-QDs. HP-QDs having an emission wavelength of 550 and 650 nm are synthesized through a blue-shifted and red-shifted algorithm, respectively, from any arbitrary reaction condition within 400 s. The iterative process through the PI feedback control produces the target HP-QDs with short rise time and low overshoot. The proposed automatic flow chemistry system integrated with a universal and accessible control algorithm of PI can generate the target HP-QDs with high accuracy, stability, and robustness, demonstrating a significant advancement in constructing an autonomous flow chemistry synthetic system.

A perovskite-based electrochemiluminescence aptasensor for tetracycline screening

Tetracyclines are currently the most commonly used class of antibiotics, and their residue issue significantly impacts public health safety. In this study, a surface modification of perovskite with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide led to the generation of stable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters in aqueous systems and improved the biocompatibility of perovskite. A perovskite quantum dot-based ECL sensing strategy was developed. Utilizing the corresponding aptamer of the antibiotics, strain displacement reactions were triggered, disrupting the ECL quenching system composed of perovskite and Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) on the electrode surface, generating a signal to achieve quantitative detection of several common tetracycline antibiotics. The perovskite quantum dot provided a strong and stable initial signal, while the efficient catalytic activity of the silver cluster enhanced the recognition sensitivity. Tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline were used as examples to demonstrate the differentiation and quantitative detection through this method. In addition, the aptasensor exhibited analytical performance with the linear range (0.1-10 μM OTC) and good recovery rates of 94.7% to 101.6% in real samples. This approach has the potential to become a sensitive and practical approach for assessing antibiotic residues.

Efficient CsPbBr3 Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes via Novel Multi-Step Ligand Exchange Strategy Based on Zwitterionic Molecules

Perovskite nanocrystals have absorbed increasing interest, especially in the field of optoelectronics, owing to their unique characteristics, including their tunable luminescence range, robust solution processability, facile synthesis, and so on. However, in practice, due to the inherent instability of the traditional long-chain insulating ligands surrounding perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs), the performance of the as-fabricated QLED is relatively disappointing. Herein, the zwitterion 3-(decyldimethylammonio)propanesulfonate (DLPS) with the capability of double passivating perovskite quantum dots could effectively replace the original long-chain ligand simply through a multistep post-treatment strategy to finally inhibit the formation of defects. It was indicated from theexperimental results that the DLPS, as one type of ligand with the bimolecular ion, was very adavntageous in replacing long-chain ligands and further suppressing the formation of defects. Finally, the perovskite quantum dots with greatly enhanced PLQY as high as 98% were effectively achieved. Additionally, the colloidal stability of the corresponding PeQDs has been significantly enhanced, and a transparent colloidal solution was obtained after 45 days under ambient conditions. Finally, the as-fabricated QLEDs based on the ligand-exchanged PeQDs exhibited a maximum brightness of 9464 cd/m2 and an EQE of 12.17%.

In Situ Hydrolysis of Phosphate Enabling Sky-Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diode with EQE Approaching 16.32

The performance of blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) lags behind the green and red counterparts owing to high trap density and undesirable red shift of the electroluminescence spectrum under operation conditions. Organic molecular additives were employed as passivators in previous reports. However, most commonly have limited functions, making it challenging to effectively address both efficiency and stability issues simultaneously. Herein, we reported an innovatively dynamic in situ hydrolysis strategy to modulate quasi-2D sky-blue perovskites by the multifunctional passivator phenyl dichlorophosphate that not only passivated the defects but also underwent in situ hydrolysis reaction to stabilize the emission. Moreover, hydrolysis products were beneficial for low-dimensional phase manipulation. Eventually, we obtained high-performance sky-blue PeLEDs with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.32% and an exceptional luminance of 5740 cd m-2. More importantly, the emission peak of devices located at 485 nm remained stable under different biases. Our work signified the significant advancement toward realizing future applications of PeLEDs.

Persistent enhancement of exciton diffusivity in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal solids

In semiconductors, exciton or charge carrier diffusivity is typically described as an inherent material property. Here, we show that the transport of excitons among CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) depends markedly on how recently those NCs were occupied by a previous exciton. Using transient photoluminescence microscopy, we observe a striking dependence of the apparent exciton diffusivity on excitation laser power that does not arise from nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions or thermal heating. We interpret our observations with a model in which excitons cause NCs to transition to a long-lived metastable configuration that markedly increases exciton transport. The exciton diffusivity observed here (>0.15 square centimeters per second) is considerably higher than that observed in other NC systems, revealing unusually strong excitonic coupling between NCs. The finding of a persistent enhancement in excitonic coupling may help explain other photophysical behaviors observed in CsPbBr3 NCs, such as superfluorescence, and inform the design of optoelectronic devices.

Defects in lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes under electric field: from behavior to passivation strategies

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are emerging semiconductor materials for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) owing to their unique structure and superior optoelectronic properties. However, defects that initiate degradation of LHPs through external stimuli and prompt internal ion migration at the interfaces remain a significant challenge. The electric field (EF), which is a fundamental driving force in LED operation, complicates the role of these defects in the physical and chemical properties of LHPs. A deeper understanding of EF-induced defect behavior is crucial for optimizing the LED performance. In this review, the origins and characterization of defects are explored, indicating the influence of EF-induced defect dynamics on LED performance and stability. A comprehensive overview of recent defect passivation approaches for LHP bulk films and nanocrystals (NCs) is also provided. Given the ubiquity of EF, a summary of the EF-induced defect behavior can enhance the performance of perovskite LEDs and related optoelectronic devices.

Controllable fabrication of well-shaped PMBA@CsPbBr3 nanoparticles for highly sensitive detection of HCl and HBr

We report a facile two-step strategy to construct well-shaped PMBA@CsPbBr3 nanoparticles, with this strategy involving combining in situ adsorption and controlled polymerization. The morphological evolution process and mechanism of formation of the nanoparticles were demonstrated, and the nanoparticles showed high sensitivity to corrosive acid gas. This work has provided an effective approach for fabricating well-structured perovskite-based nanocomposites.

Unraveling the Transformation from Type-II to Z-Scheme in Perovskite-Based Heterostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The ability to create perovskite-based heterostructures with desirable charge transfer characteristics represents an important endeavor to render a set of perovskite materials and devices with tunable optoelectronic properties. However, due to similar material selection and band alignment in type-II and Z-scheme heterostructures, it remains challenging to obtain perovskite-based heterostructures with a favorable electron transfer pathway for photocatalysis. Herein, we report a robust tailoring of effective charge transfer pathway in perovskite-based heterostructures via a type-II to Z-scheme transformation for highly efficient and selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Specifically, CsPbBr3/TiO2 and CsPbBr3/Au/TiO2 heterostructures are synthesized and then investigated by ultrafast spectroscopy. Moreover, taking CsPbBr3/TiO2 and CsPbBr3/Au/TiO2 as examples, operando experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the type-II heterostructure could be readily transformed into a Z-scheme heterostructure through establishing a low-resistance Ohmic contact, which indicates that a fast electron transfer pathway is crucial in Z-scheme construction, as further demonstrated by CsPbBr3/Ag/TiO2 and CsPbBr3/MoS2 heterostructures. In contrast to pristine CsPbBr3 and CsPbBr3/TiO2, the CsPbBr3/Au/TiO2 heterostructure exhibits 5.4- and 3.0-fold enhancement of electron consumption rate in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. DFT calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy unveil that the superior CO selectivity is attributed to the lower energy of *CO desorption than that of hydrogenation to *HCO. This meticulous design sheds light on the modification of perovskite-based multifunctional materials and enlightens conscious optimization of semiconductor-based heterostructures with desirable charge transfer for catalysis and optoelectronic applications.

Designing Yolk-Shell Nanostructures for Reversible Water-Vapor-Responsive Dual-Mode Switching of Fluorescence and Structural Color

Metal halide perovskites offer ample opportunities to develop advanced optoelectronic devices. This work showcases that the integration of metal halide perovskites into metal oxide nanoshells with controllable interior cavities can enable water-vapor-responsive dual-mode switching of fluorescence and structural color. Through a ship-in-a-bottle method to introduce a controlled amount of CsPbBr3 into MnO2 nanoshells, we have designed CsPbBr3@MnO2 yolk-shell nanostructures, which can uptake a defined amount of water to exhibit rapid (less than 1 s) and reversible (≥100 cycles) responses in both fluorescence on-off and color change when exposed to dynamic water vapor. These responses originate from the water-triggered phase transformation of CsPbBr3 to CsPb2Br5 and the structural color change of the MnO2 shell. The altered electronic and bonding structure at the oxide-halide interface, rapid water accumulation in the yolk-shell cavity, and protective effect of the oxide shell facilitate the reversible transformations. The response characteristics of the yolk-shell nanostructures have been further demonstrated in fabricating patterned films capable of multiple fluorescence/structural color responses, highlighting their potential for applications in advanced anticounterfeiting and encryption.

Colloidal Aziridinium Lead Bromide Quantum Dots

The compositional engineering of lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) via the A-site cation represents a lever to fine-tune their structural and electronic properties. However, the presently available chemical space remains minimal since, thus far, only three A-site cations have been reported to favor the formation of stable lead-halide perovskite NCs, i.e., Cs+, formamidinium (FA), and methylammonium (MA). Inspired by recent reports on bulk single crystals with aziridinium (AZ) as the A-site cation, we present a facile colloidal synthesis of AZPbBr3 NCs with a narrow size distribution and size tunability down to 4 nm, producing quantum dots (QDs) in the regime of strong quantum confinement. NMR and Raman spectroscopies confirm the stabilization of the AZ cations in the locally distorted cubic structure. AZPbBr3 QDs exhibit bright photoluminescence with quantum efficiencies of up to 80%. Stabilized with cationic and zwitterionic capping ligands, single AZPbBr3 QDs exhibit stable single-photon emission, which is another essential attribute of QDs. In particular, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide and 2-octyldodecyl-phosphoethanolamine ligands afford AZPbBr3 QDs with high spectral stability at both room and cryogenic temperatures, reduced blinking with a characteristic ON fraction larger than 85%, and high single-photon purity (g(2)(0) = 0.1), all comparable to the best-reported values for MAPbBr3 and FAPbBr3 QDs of the same size.

Manipulating solvent fluidic dynamics for large-area perovskite film-formation and white light-emitting diodes

Presynthesized perovskite quantum dots are very promising for making films with different compositions, as they decouple crystallization and film-formation processes. However, fabricating large-area uniform films using perovskite quantum dots is still very challenging due to the complex fluidic dynamics of the solvents. Here, we report a robust film-formation approach using an environmental-friendly binary-solvent strategy. Nonbenzene solvents, n-octane and n-hexane, are mixed to manipulate the fluidic and evaporation dynamics of the perovskite quantum dot inks, resulting in balanced Marangoni flow, enhanced ink spreadability, and uniform solute-redistribution. We can therefore blade-coat large-area uniform perovskite films with different compositions using the same fabrication parameters. White and red perovskite light-emitting diodes incorporating blade-coated films exhibit a decent external quantum efficiency of 10.6% and 15.3% (0.04 cm2), and show a uniform emission up to 28 cm2. This work represents a significant step toward the application of perovskite light-emitting diodes in flat panel solid-state lighting.

Size Dependence of Trion and Biexciton Binding Energies in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention as light-source materials for light-emitting diodes, lasers, and quantum light emitters. The luminescence properties of perovskite NCs and the performance of NC-based light-source devices depend on trion and biexciton dynamics. Here, we examined the size dependence of trion and biexciton binding energies by conducting low-temperature single-dot spectroscopy on three different perovskite NCs: CsPbBr3, CsPbI3, and FAPbBr3. While the photoluminescence spectral widths of the all-inorganic CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 NCs were narrow, compared with those of the organic-inorganic hybrid FAPbBr3 NCs, the binding energies of trions and biexcitons of all three samples showed similar size dependences, independent of the A-site cation and halogen. The effective-mass approximation calculations implied the importance of dynamical dielectric screening on the formation of trions and biexcitons.

Linearly Manipulating Color Emission via Anion Exchange Technology for High Performance Amplified Spontaneous Emission of Perovskites

The most attractive advantages of all-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites are their optical gain over broad spectral ranges through the visible spectrum, so are well suited to use in tunable lasers or broadband amplifiers. Most reported anion exchange reactions face a challenge to achieve the desired halogen-variable perovskites due to rapid and uncontrollable reactions and difficulty to synthesize directly. In this study, a simple vapor/solid anion exchange strategy is demonstrated for controlling the reaction process and realizing a wide range tuning of band gap and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) wavelength, which exhibits a temperature-dependent anion exchange rate. By optimizing the reaction temperature at 90 °C, the ASE wavelength can be linearly manipulated by just controlling the reaction time. A clear quantitative relationship between ASE peak position and reaction time is achieved. Compares with the CsPbClBr2 film obtained via the liquid phase anion exchange method, the fabricated perovskite films obtained by vapor/solid anion exchange technology exhibit superior film quality and enhanced ASE performance. This work may have applications in the future using facile and controllable techniques to develop high-quality full-color visible lasers.

Regulating Charge Carrier Dynamics in Stable Perovskite Nanorods for Photo-Induced Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Semiconducting nanocrystals have attracted world-wide research interest in artificial photosynthesis due to their appealing properties and enticing potentials in converting solar energy into valuable chemicals. Compared to 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanorods afford long-distance charge carriers separation and extended charge carriers lifetime due to the release of quantum confinement in axial direction. Herein, stable CsPbBr3 nanorods of distinctive dimensions are crafted without altering their properties and morphology via grafting hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) chains through a post-synthesis ligand exchange process. The resulting PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods exhibit a series of enhanced stabilities against UV irradiation, elevated temperature, and polar solvent, making them promising candidates for photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Tailoring the surface chemistry and dimension of the PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods endows stable, but variable reaction kinetics in the photo-induced ATRP of methyl methacrylate. The trapping-detrapping process of photogenerated charge carriers lead to extended lifetime of charge carriers in lengthened CsPbBr3 nanorods, contributing to a facilitated reaction kinetics of photo-induced ATRP. Therefore, by leveraging such stable PS-capped CsPbBr3 nanorods, the effects of surface chemistry and charge carriers dynamics on its photocatalytic performance are scrutinized, providing fundamental understandings for designing next-generation efficient nanostructured photocatalyst in artificial photosynthesis and solar energy conversion.

Self-Healing Behavior of the Metal Halide Perovskites and Photovoltaics

Perovskite solar cells have achieved rapid progress in the new-generation photovoltaic field, but the commercialization lags behind owing to the device stability issue under operational conditions. Ultimately, the instability issue is attributed to the soft lattice of ionic perovskite crystal. In brief, metal halide perovskite materials are susceptible to structural instability processes, including phase segregation, component loss, lattice distortion, and fatigue failure under harsh external stimuli such as high humidity, strong irradiation, wide thermal cycles, and large stress. Developing self-healing perovskites to further improve the unsatisfactory operational stability of their photoelectric devices under harsh stimuli has become a cutting-edge hotspot in this field. This self-healing behavior needs to be studied more comprehensively. Therefore, the self-healing behavior of the metal halide perovskites and photovoltaics is classified and summarized in this review. By discussing recent advances, underlying mechanisms, strategies, and existing challenges, this review provides perspectives on self-healing of perovskite solar cells in the future.

Monitoring Phase Separation and Dark Recovery in Mixed Halide Perovskite Clusters and Single Crystals Using In Situ Spectromicroscopy

Mixed halide perovskites (MHPs) are a group of semiconducting materials with promising applications in optoelectronics and photovoltaics, whose bandgap can be altered by adjusting the halide composition. However, the current challenge is to stabilize the light-induced halide separation, which undermines the device's performance. Herein we track down the phase separation dynamics of CsPbBr1.2I1.8 MHP single cubic nanocrystals (NCs) and clusters as a function of time by in situ fluorescence spectromicroscopy. The particles were sorted into groups 1 and 2 using initial photoluminescence intensities. The phase separation followed by recovery kinetics under dark and photo blinking analysis suggests that group 1 behaved more like single NCs and group 2 behaved like clusters. Under the 0.64 W/cm2 laser illumination, the phase shifts for single NCs are 3.4 ± 1.9 nm. The phase shifts are linearly correlated with the initial photoluminescence intensities of clusters, suggesting possible interparticle halide transportation.

Designer phospholipid capping ligands for soft metal halide nanocrystals

The success of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) in science and optoelectronics is inextricable from their surfaces. The functionalization of lead halide perovskite NCs1-5 poses a formidable challenge because of their structural lability, unlike the well-established covalent ligand capping of conventional semiconductor NCs6,7. We posited that the vast and facile molecular engineering of phospholipids as zwitterionic surfactants can deliver highly customized surface chemistries for metal halide NCs. Molecular dynamics simulations implied that ligand-NC surface affinity is primarily governed by the structure of the zwitterionic head group, particularly by the geometric fitness of the anionic and cationic moieties into the surface lattice sites, as corroborated by the nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data. Lattice-matched primary-ammonium phospholipids enhance the structural and colloidal integrity of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (FAPbBr3 and MAPbBr3 (FA, formamidinium; MA, methylammonium)) and lead-free metal halide NCs. The molecular structure of the organic ligand tail governs the long-term colloidal stability and compatibility with solvents of diverse polarity, from hydrocarbons to acetone and alcohols. These NCs exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of more than 96% in solution and solids and minimal photoluminescence intermittency at the single particle level with an average ON fraction as high as 94%, as well as bright and high-purity (about 95%) single-photon emission.

Surface and Interface Engineering for Highly Stable CsPbBr3/ZnS Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Shelling with chalcogenides on the surface of lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) is believed to be an effective approach to increase their stability under high-moisture/aqueous conditions, which is important for LHP NC-based optoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to prepare high-quality LHP/chalcogenide core/shell NCs with moisture/aqueous stability. In this work, a surface-defect-induced strategy is carried out to facilitate the adsorption of Br- ions and subsequently Zn2+ ions to preform a bipolar surface, which reduces the energy barrier at the CsPbBr3/ZnS interface and promotes the epitaxial growth of the ZnS shell layer. The aqueous stability of the as-received NCs shows an increase of over 12 times compared to that of the original one. Likewise, Mn2+ ions are introduced to further reduce the geometric symmetry mismatch and defect density at the CsPbBr3/ZnS interface. Interestingly, aqueous stability characterizations illustrate negligible degradation even after 230 min of ultrasonication, suggesting their outstanding stability. This work proposes an effective approach to prepare high-quality LHP/chalcogenide core/shell NCs, which possess great potential in the fabrication of stable optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis of Metastable Silver-Lanthanide Double Perovskite Nanocrystals with White-Light Emission

Four silver-lanthanide double perovskite nanocrystals, namely, Cs2AgSmCl6, Cs2AgEuCl6, Cs2AgGdCl6, and Cs2AgErCl6, were synthesized for the first time. These four double perovskites have yet to be reported in any form and are found to be metastable in the bulk phase. By using the colloidal hot-injection synthesis method, the metastable double perovskite phase can be arrested kinetically. These lead-free nanocrystals show a broadband emission owing to the self-trapped exciton recombination, with Cs2AgEuCl6 exhibiting the characteristic f-f emission from Eu3+.

Nanocrystals for Deep-Tissue In Vivo Luminescence Imaging in the Near-Infrared Region

In vivo imaging technologies have emerged as a powerful tool for both fundamental research and clinical practice. In particular, luminescence imaging in the tissue-transparent near-infrared (NIR, 700-1700 nm) region offers tremendous potential for visualizing biological architectures and pathophysiological events in living subjects with deep tissue penetration and high imaging contrast owing to the reduced light-tissue interactions of absorption, scattering, and autofluorescence. The distinctive quantum effects of nanocrystals have been harnessed to achieve exceptional photophysical properties, establishing them as a promising category of luminescent probes. In this comprehensive review, the interactions between light and biological tissues, as well as the advantages of NIR light for in vivo luminescence imaging, are initially elaborated. Subsequently, we focus on achieving deep tissue penetration and improved imaging contrast by optimizing the performance of nanocrystal fluorophores. The ingenious design strategies of NIR nanocrystal probes are discussed, along with their respective biomedical applications in versatile in vivo luminescence imaging modalities. Finally, thought-provoking reflections on the challenges and prospects for future clinical translation of nanocrystal-based in vivo luminescence imaging in the NIR region are wisely provided.

Enhanced stability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals through Al2O3 and polymer coating

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation display applications due to their attractive optical properties and low-cost production. However, the environmental stability of perovskite remains a major challenge, hindering their practical applications and scalability for commercialization. In this study, we present an effective method to enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals by coating them with a combination of Al2O3 and a polymer. The unique double protection structure significantly improves their resistance to moisture, heat, and polar solvents. It is worth noting that compared with the ordinary CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, the modified nanocrystals have better stability and higher luminous intensity. After soaking in water for 360 hours, the modified nanocrystals retained 85% of their initial luminous intensity. Under optimal conditions, the luminous intensity of modified nanocrystals increased by 36%. Furthermore, the thermal stability and organic solvent resistance of the nanocrystals are improved compared with the nanocrystals uncoated with Al2O3. The synthesized white light emitting diode using the modified PNCs achieves a color gamut coverage rate of 129% under standard NTSC, and 95% under standard Rec.2020, indicating its potential for future display applications. This research presents a promising approach for the development of stable perovskite nanocrystals with enhanced performance in various optoelectronic devices.

Scintillation Properties of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals Prepared by Ligand-Assisted Reprecipitation and Dual Effect of Polyacrylate Encapsulation toward Scalable Ultrafast Radiation Detectors

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP-NCs) embedded in polymeric hosts are gaining attention as scalable and low-cost scintillation detectors for technologically relevant applications. Despite rapid progress, little is currently known about the scintillation properties and stability of LHP-NCs prepared by the ligand assisted reprecipitation (LARP) method, which allows mass scalability at room temperature unmatched by any other type of nanostructure, and the implications of incorporating LHP-NCs into polyacrylate hosts are still largely debated. Here, we show that LARP-synthesized CsPbBr3 NCs are comparable to particles from hot-injection routes and unravel the dual effect of polyacrylate incorporation, where the partial degradation of LHP-NCs luminescence is counterbalanced by the passivation of electron-poor defects by the host acrylic groups. Experiments on NCs with tailored surface defects show that the balance between such antithetical effects of polymer embedding is determined by the surface defect density of the NCs and provide guidelines for further material optimization.

Fabrication of Potassium- and Rubidium-Doped Formamidinium Lead Bromide Nanocrystals for Surface Defect Passivation and Improved Photoluminescence Stability

The past decade has seen a rapid development in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), which has been witnessed by their potential applications in nanotechnology. The inimitable chemical nature behind their unique photoluminescence characteristics has attracted a growing body of researchers. However, the low intrinsic stability and surface defects of perovskite NCs have hampered their widespread applications. Therefore, numerous techniques such as doping and encapsulation (polymer matrices, silica coating, salt matrix, etc.) have been examined for the surface modification of perovskite NCs and to increase their efficiency and stability. In this study, we demonstrated the self-passivation method for surface defects by introducing potassium (K) or rubidium (Rb) during the colloidal fabrication of NCs, resulting in the much-improved crystallinity, photoluminescence, and improved radiative efficiency. In addition, K-doped NCs showed a long-term colloidal stability of more than 1 month, which indicates the strong bonding between the NCs and the smaller-sized potassium cations (K+). We observed the enhancement of the radiative lifetime that can also be explained by the prevention of "Frenkel defects" when K+ stays at the interstitial site of the nanocrystal structure. Furthermore, our current findings signify the importance of surface modification techniques using alkali metal ions to reduce the surface traps of perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs). Comparable developments could be applied to polycrystalline perovskite thin films to reduce the interface trap densities. The findings of this study have several important implications for future light-emitting applications.

Extending Infrared Emission via Energy Transfer in a CsPbI3-Cyanine Dye Hybrid

Directing energy flow in light harvesting assemblies of nanocrystal-chromophore hybrid systems requires a better understanding of factors that dictate excited-state processes. In this study, we explore excited-state interactions within the CsPbI3-cyanine dye (IR125) hybrid assembly through a comprehensive set of steady-state and time-resolved absorption and photoluminescence (PL) experiments. Our photoluminescence investigations reveal the quenching of CsPbI3 emission alongside the simultaneous enhancement of IR125 fluorescence, providing evidence for a singlet energy transfer. The evaluation of both photoluminescence (PL) quenching and PL decay measurements yield ∼94% energy transfer efficiency for the CsPbI3-IR125 hybrid assembly. Transient absorption spectroscopy further unveils that this singlet energy transfer process operates on an ultrafast time scale, occurring within 400 ps with a rate constant of energy transfer of 1.4 × 1010 s-1. Our findings highlight the potential of the CsPbI3-IR125 hybrid assembly to extend the emission of halide perovskites into the infrared region, paving the way for light energy harvesting and display applications.

Mechanistic Insights into the Photoluminescence Enhancement in Surface Ligand Modified CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals

We report a mechanistic study of the photoluminescence (PL) enhancement in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) induced by organic/inorganic hybrid ligand engineering. Compared to the as-synthesized oleic acid-oleylamine modified PNCs, the tributylphosphine oxide-CaBr2 modified PNCs can achieve a better passivation effect due to strong P═O-Pb coordination and Br-vacancy remedy, resulting in enhanced PL efficiency. We employ steady-state/time-resolved/temperature-dependent PL and fluence/polarization-dependent ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to obtain a mechanistic understanding of such an enhancement effect from both nonradiative and radiative perspectives. As for the dominating nonradiative recombination suppression, we quantitatively evaluate the contributions from channels of exciton dissociation and exciton trapping, which are connected to exciton binding energy and activation energy of exciton trapping to surface defect-induced trap states, respectively. We also look into the radiative recombination enhancement, which is likely due to the increase in electron-hole overlap of photogenerated excitons induced by slight Ca-doping. These mechanistic insights would be of guiding value for perovskite-based light-emitting applications.

Excitonic Quantum Coherence in Light Emission from CsPbBr3 Metal-Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The decay of excited states via radiative and nonradiative paths is well understood in molecules and bulk semiconductors but less so in nanocrystals. Here, we perform time-resolved photoluminescence (t-PL) experiments on CsPbBr3 metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals, with a time resolution of 3 ps, sufficient to observe the decay of both excitons and biexcitons as a function of temperature. The striking result is that the radiative rate constant of the single exciton increases at low temperatures with an exponential functional form, suggesting quantum coherent effects with dephasing at high temperatures. The opposing directions of the radiative and nonradiative decay rate constants enable enhanced brightening of PL from excitons to biexcitons due to quantum effects, promoting a faster approach to the quantum theoretical limits of light emission. Ab initio quantum dynamics simulations reproduce the experimental observations of radiation controlled by quantum spatial coherence enhanced at low temperatures.

Synthesis of Ternary and Quaternary Group III-Arsenide Colloidal Quantum Dots via High-Temperature Cation Exchange in Molten Salts: The Importance of Molten Salt Speciation

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are an important class of materials which have many desirable optoelectronic properties. In their bulk phases, gallium- and aluminum-containing III-V materials such as GaAs, GaP, and Al1-xGaxAs represent some of the most technologically important semiconductors. However, their colloidal synthesis by traditional methods is difficult due to the high temperatures needed to crystallize these highly covalent materials and the extreme reactivity of Ga- and Al- precursors toward organic solvents at such high temperatures. A recently developed paradigm shift in the synthesis of these materials is to use molten inorganic salts as solvents to prepare Ga- containing III-V colloidal nanocrystals by cation exchange of the corresponding indium pnictide (InPn) colloidal nanocrystals. There have been several successful applications of molten salt solvents to prepare III-phosphide colloidal nanocrystals. However, little is known about the nature of these reaction environments at the relevant reaction conditions and synthesis of III-arsenide colloidal nanocrystals remains challenging. Herein we report a detailed study on cation exchange of InPn nanocrystals using nominally Lewis basic molten salt solvents with added gallium halides. Surprisingly, these salt systems phase separate into two immiscible phases, and the nanocrystals preferentially segregate to one of the phases. Using a suite of in situ spectroscopy tools, we identify the phase the nanocrystals segregate to as Lewis neutral alkali tetrahalogallate molten salts. We apply in situ high-temperature Raman spectroscopy to identify the chemical species present in several molten salt compositions at experimentally relevant reaction conditions to elucidate a molecular basis for the reactivity observed. We then employ Lewis neutral KGaI4 molten salts to prepare high-quality In1-xGaxAs and In1-xGaxP nanocrystals and demonstrate that deviation from Lewis neutral conditions accelerate nanocrystal decomposition in the case of III-arsenide materials. Further, we expand to KAlI4-based molten salts to prepare In1-x-yGaxAlyAs nanocrystals which represent an example of solution-synthesized quaternary III-V nanocrystals. These insights provide a molecular basis for the rational development of molten salt solvents, thus allowing the preparation of a diverse array of multicomponent III-V colloidal nanocrystals.

Hot Excitons Cool in Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals as Fast as CdSe Nanocrystals

The idea of phonon bottlenecks has long been pursued in nanoscale materials for their application in hot exciton devices, such as photovoltaics. Decades ago, it was shown that there is no quantum phonon bottleneck in strongly confined quantum dots due to their physics of quantum confinement. More recently, it was proposed that there are hot phonon bottlenecks in metal halide perovskites due to their physics. Recent work has called into question these bottlenecks in metal halide perovskites. Here, we compare hot exciton cooling in a range of sizes of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals from weakly to strongly confined. These results are compared to strongly confined CdSe quantum dots of two sizes and degrees of quantum confinement. CdSe is a model system as a ruler for measuring hot exciton cooling being fast, by virtue of its efficient Auger-assisted processes. By virtue of 3 ps time resolution, the hot exciton photoluminescence can now be directly observed, which is the most direct measure of the presence of hot excitons and their lifetimes. The hot exciton photoluminescence decays on nearly the same 2 ps time scale on both the weakly confined perovskite and the larger CdSe quantum dots, much faster than the 10 ps cooling predicted by transient absorption experiments. The smaller CdSe quantum dot has still faster cooling, as expected from quantum size effects. The quantum dots of perovskites show extremely fast hot exciton cooling, decaying faster than detection limits of <1 ps, even faster than the CdSe system, suggesting the efficiency of Auger processes in these metal halide perovskite nanocrystals and especially in their quantum dot form. These results across a range of sizes of nanocrystals reveal extremely fast hot exciton cooling at high exciton density, independent of composition, but dependent upon size. Hence these metal halide perovskite nanocrystals seem to cool heavily following quantum dot physics.

Electron-donating functional groups strengthen ligand-induced chiral imprinting on CsPbBr3 quantum dots

Chiral perovskite nanoparticles and films are promising for integration in emerging spintronic and optoelectronic technologies, yet few design rules exist to guide the development of chiral material properties. The chemical space of potential building blocks for these nanostructures is vast, and the mechanisms through which organic ligands can impart chirality to the inorganic perovskite lattice are not well understood. In this work, we investigate how the properties of chiral ammonium ligands, the most common organic ligand type used with perovskites, affect the circular dichroism of strongly quantum confined CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. We show that aromatic ammonium ligands with stronger electron-donating groups lead to higher-intensity circular dichroism associated with the lowest-energy excitonic transition of the perovskite nanocrystal. We argue that this behavior is best explained by a modulation of the exciton wavefunction overlap between the nanocrystal and the organic ligand, as the functional groups on the ligand can shift electron density toward the organic species-perovskite lattice interface to increase the imprinting.

Rejuvenating Aged Perovskite Quantum Dots for Efficient Solar Cells

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation solar cells owing to its remarkable optoelectronic properties and solution processability. However, the optoelectronic properties of PQDs suffer from severe degradation in storage due to the dynamically binding ligands, predominantly affecting photovoltaic applications. Herein, an in situ defect healing treatment (DHT) is reported to effectively rejuvenate aged PQDs. Systematically, experimental studies and theoretical calculations are performed to fundamentally understand the causes leading to the recovered optoelectronic properties of aged PQDs. The results reveal that the I3 - anions produced from tetra-n-octylammonium iodide and iodine could strongly anchor on the surface matrix defects of aged PQDs, substantially diminishing the nonradiative recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Meanwhile, an DHT could also renovate the morphology of aged PQDs and thus improve the stacking orientation of PQD solids, substantially ameliorating charge carrier transport within PQD solids. Consequently, by using a DHT, the PQD solar cell (PQDSC) yields a high efficiency of up to 15.88%, which is comparable with the PQDSCs fabricated using fresh PQDs. Meanwhile, the stability of PQDSCs fabricated using the rejuvenated PQDs is also largely improved.

In situ and General Multidentate Ligand Passivation Achieves Efficient and Ultra-Stable CsPbX3 Perovskite Quantum Dots for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Inorganic CsPbX3 perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) show great potential in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to excellent optoelectronic properties, but their practical application is hampered by low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and especially poor stability. Herein,  we developed an in-situ and general multidentate ligand passivation strategy that allows for CsPbX3 PeQDs not only near-unit PLQY, but significantly improved stability against storage, heat, and polar solvent. The enhanced optical property arises from high effectiveness of the multidentate ligand, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) with five carboxyl groups, in passivating uncoordinated Pb2+ defects and suppressing nonradiative recombination. First-principles calculations reveal that the excellent stability is attributed to tridentate binding mode of DTPA that remarkably boosts the adsorption capacity to PeQD core. Finally, combining the green and red PeQDs with blue chip,  we demonstrated highly luminous WLEDs with distinctly enhanced operation stability, a wide color gamut of 121.3% of national television system committee, standard white light of (0.33,0.33) in CIE 1931, and tunable color temperatures from warm to cold white light readily by emitters' ratio. This study provides an operando yet general approach to achieve efficient and stable PeQDs for WLEDs and accelerates their progress to commercialization.

Enhancing Multiexcitonic Emission in Metal-Halide Perovskites by Quantum Confinement

Semiconductor metal halide perovskite nanocrystals have been under intense investigation for their promise in a variety of optoelectronic applications, which arises from their remarkable properties of defect tolerance and efficient light emission. Recently, quantum dot versions of perovskite nanocrystals have been available, enabling investigation of how quantum size effects control optical function and performance in these quantum dots (QD), past their well-known covalent II-VI analogues. We perform time-resolved photoluminescence (t-PL) experiments on CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals spanning in diameter from 5.8 nm strongly confined quantum dots to 18 nm weakly confined quantum dots. Experiments are performed with sufficient time resolution of 3 ps to observe the interaction energies and recombination kinetics from excitons to multiexcitons. Comparing the same sized QD reveals that perovskite QD have a larger radiative rate constant for emission from X than CdSe QD due to a larger oscillator strength. The multiexciton (MX) regime reveals that perovskite QD emit brightly and with more focused bandwidth than equivalent sized CdSe QD enabling more spectrally pure brightness. The MX kinetics reveals that the perovskite QD maintain efficient radiative decay, effectively competing with Auger recombination. These experiments reveal that the strongly confined QD of perovskites can be efficient multiexcitonic emitters, such as in high brightness light emitting diodes, especially in the blue.

Breaking the Condon Approximation for Light Emission from Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The idea that the electronic transition dipole moment does not depend upon nuclear excursions is the Condon approximation and is central to most spectroscopy, especially in the solid state. We show a strong breakdown of the Condon approximation in the time-resolved photoluminescence from CsPbBr3 metal halide perovskite semiconductor nanocrystals. Experiments reveal that the electronic transition dipole moment increases on the 30 ps time scale due to structural dynamics in the lattice. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations quantitatively reproduce experiments by considering excitation-induced structural dynamics.

Surface crafting and entrapment of CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs in ZIF-8 for ammonia recognition

The substantial optical features of perovskite quantum dots (PQD) lead to rapid growth in the investigation of their surface and lattice doping for optoelectronic and biochemical sensor advancements. Herein, we have used the surface ligand crafting model of PQD by ammonia and its optimum response to recognise ammonia in the sensing cellulose paper. The PQD with acetyl amine and octanoic acid capped were synthesized and entrapped in zeolites imidazole framework to delay the instant quenching and envisaged response to ammonia with high sensitivity. The hybrid perovskite quantum dots and Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (PQD@ZIF-8) materials were further immersed in cellulose paper for solid-state sensor fabrication for the detection of ammonia by naked-eye and a Xiaomi Note-5 mobile camera. The ammonia was measured with high sensitivity at ambient conditions, with a detection limit of 16 ppm and a linear detection range of 1 to 500 ppm. This research provides a new platform for designing sensor selectivity and sensitivity, which could be used to further develop fluorescent nanomaterials-based sensors for small molecule detection.

Stable Perovskite Quantum Dots Light-Emitting Diodes with Efficiency Exceeding 24

Perovskite nanocrystals for light-emitting diodes are often synthesized by uncontrollable metathesis reactions, suffering from low product yield, nonuniform growth, and poor stability. Herein, by controlling the nucleation kinetics with high dissociation constant (Ka or Kb) acids or bases, homogenous one-route nucleation of perovskite nanocrystals is achieved as the cluster intermediates are eliminated. The stable, shape uniform, and narrow size distribution green nanocrystals are synthesized. The perovskite nanocrystal film exhibites excellent stability in 80% humidity air with only a 10% photoluminescence intensity drop after 16 h. Efficient and stable electroluminescence is demonstrated with an FWHM of 16 nm at 517 nm. The green devices shows a peak EQE of 24.13% with a lifetime T50 of 54 min at 10 000 cd m-2 .

Sub-Single-Exciton Optical Gain in Lead Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots Revealed by Exciton Polarization Spectroscopy

Optical gain of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is often attained in the multiexciton regime, which strongly complicates their lasing applications as the gain lifetime is limited by nonradiative Auger recombination occurring typically on the picosecond time scale. In principle, low-threshold gain can be achieved if the gain-active emission has a sizable red shift compared to the absorption. But, this mechanism has been rarely observed in typical QDs featuring small Stokes shift due to their weak electron-phonon coupling. Here, we report the observation of sub-single-exciton gain in CsPbI3 and CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs, which is unequivocally established through pinpointing the stimulated emission and biexciton absorption signatures using polarization-controlled femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The soft lattice of perovskite QDs and hence strong electron-phonon coupling lead to two stimulated emission features from free and self-trapped excitons, respectively. In monodisperse QDs of varying sizes, the Stokes shift of the self-trapped exciton emission is sufficiently large to overcome the biexciton absorption loss and the inhomogeneous line width, enabling optical gain with average exciton occupancy down to <10%.

Self-assembly of perovskite nanoplates in colloidal suspensions

In recent years, perovskite nanocrystal superlattices have been reported with collective optical phenomena, offering a promising platform for both fundamental science studies and device engineering. In this same avenue, superlattices of perovskite nanoplates can be easily prepared on different substrates, and they too present an ensemble optical response. However, the self-assembly and optical properties of these aggregates in solvents have not been reported to date. Here, we report on the conditions for this self-assembly to occur and show a simple strategy to induce the formation of these nanoplate stacks in suspension in different organic solvents. We combined wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering and scanning transmission electron microscopy to evaluate CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 perovskite nanoplates with different thickness distributions. We observed the formation of these stacks by changing the concentration of nanoplates and the viscosity of the colloidal suspensions, without the need for antisolvent addition. We found that, in hexane, the concentration for the formation of the stacks is rather high and approximately 80 mg mL-1. In contrast, in decane, dodecane, and hexadecane, we observe a much easier self-assembly of the nanoplates, presenting a clear correlation between the degree of aggregation and viscosity. We, then, discuss the impact of the self-assembly of perovskite nanoplates on Förster resonant energy transfer. Our predictions suggest an energy transfer efficiency higher than 50% for all the donor-acceptor systems evaluated. In particular, we demonstrate how the aggregation of these particles in hexadecane induces FRET for CsPbBr3 nanowires. For the n = 2 nanowires (donor) to the n = 3 nanowires (acceptor), the FRET rate was found to be 4.1 ns-1, with an efficiency of 56%, in agreement with our own predictions.

Highly Photostable Zn-Treated Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals for Efficient Single Photon Generation

Achieving pure single-photon emission is essential for a range of quantum technologies, from quantum computing to quantum key distribution to quantum metrology. Among solid-state quantum emitters, colloidal lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted considerable interest due to their structural and optical properties, which make them attractive candidates for single-photon sources (SPSs). However, their practical utilization has been hampered by environment-induced instabilities. In this study, we fabricate and characterize in a systematic manner Zn-treated CsPbBr3 colloidal NCs obtained through Zn2+ ion doping at the Pb-site, demonstrating improved stability under dilution and illumination. The doped NCs exhibit high single-photon purity, reduced blinking on a submillisecond time scale, and stability of the bright state even at excitation powers well above saturation. Our findings highlight the potential of this synthesis approach to optimize the performance of LHP-based SPSs, opening up interesting prospects for their integration into nanophotonic systems for quantum technology applications.

Ultrafast photo-induced carrier dynamics of perovskite quantum dots during structural degradation

In this study, the ultrafast photo-induced carrier dynamics of red-emitting PQDs during structural degradation was investigated using time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The spectroscopic analysis revealed how the carrier dynamics varied when PQDs were exposed to a polar solvent. Three decay modes (carrier trapping, radiative carrier recombination and trap-assisted non-radiative recombination) were proposed to analyze the carrier dynamics of PQDs. The light-emitting property of PQDs is primarily influenced by radiative carrier recombination. This study demonstrates that structural degradation induced halide migration within PQDs and the formation of defects within the crystal lattice, leading to a proliferation of carrier trapping states. The increased trap states led to a reduction in carriers undergoing radiative carrier recombination. Additionally, PQDs degradation accelerated radiative carrier recombination, indicating a faster escape of carriers from excited states. Consequently, these factors hinder carriers remaining in excited states, leading to a decline in the light-emitting property of PQDs. Nevertheless, increasing an excitation fluence could reduce the carrier trapping mode and increase the radiative carrier recombination mode, suggesting a diminishment of the impact of carrier trapping. These findings offer a more comprehensive understanding of structural degradation of PQDs and can contribute to the development of PQDs with high structural stability.

The role of oxygen defects in the electronic, optical and phonon dispersion of the LAGO perovskite: a density functional theory investigation

The study aims to investigate the electronic, optical and phonon dispersion properties of a pure and 2.5% O-defect induced LAGO perovskite, using density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the PBE functional. The research reveals a significant reduction in the band gap from 3.27 eV in pure LAGO to 2.18 eV in defect-induced LAGO. The defect-induced LAGO exhibits relatively strong light absorption in the visible region compared to pure LAGO. The phonon-dispersion analysis identifies one acoustic and two transverse optical mode branches. The calculated Debye temperatures for pure and defect-induced systems are 469.92 K and 463.69 K, respectively, attributed to weaker bonds in defect-induced LAGO. The findings offer fundamental insights into the impact of oxygen vacancies on the electronic, optical, and phonon properties of the LAGO perovskite that can potentially improve the electronic and optoelectronic devices operating across a wide range of spectral frequencies.

Exciton-polaron interactions in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals revealed via two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals have been under intense investigation for their promise in optoelectronic devices due to their remarkable physics, such as liquid/solid duality. This liquid/solid duality may give rise to their defect tolerance and other such useful properties. This duality means that the electronic states are fluctuating in time, on a distribution of timescales from femtoseconds to picoseconds. Hence, these lattice induced energy fluctuations that are connected to polaron formation are also connected to exciton formation and dynamics. We observe these correlations and dynamics in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals of CsPbI3 and CsPbBr3 using two-dimensional electronic (2DE) spectroscopy, with its unique ability to resolve dynamics in heterogeneously broadened systems. The 2DE spectra immediately reveal a previously unobserved excitonic splitting in these 15 nm NCs that may have a coarse excitonic structure. 2D lineshape dynamics reveal a glassy response on the 300 fs timescale due to polaron formation. The lighter Br system shows larger amplitude and faster timescale fluctuations that give rise to dynamic line broadening. The 2DE signals enable 1D transient absorption analysis of exciton cooling dynamics. Exciton cooling within this doublet is shown to take place on a slower timescale than within the excitonic continuum. The energy dissipation rates are the same for the I and Br systems for incoherent exciton cooling but are very different for the coherent dynamics that give rise to line broadening. Exciton cooling is shown to take place on the same timescale as polaron formation, revealing both as coupled many-body excitation.

Broadband Near-Infrared Emission from 0D Hybrid Copper Halides

Metal halides have attracted increasing attention owing to their outstanding optoelectronic properties and tunable emission characteristics. Among these, low-dimensional metal halides have emerged as a novel and efficient luminescent material, primarily attributed to their broad spectral emission induced by self-trapped excitons (STEs). However, achieving highly efficient deep red and near-infrared (NIR) emission in metal halides remains a challenge. In this study, we report a novel zero-dimensional (0D) copper-based metal halide [Na2(DMSO)8]Cu4Br6 as the NIR light source, which exhibits a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 195 nm peaking at 685 nm, an impressive quantum efficiency of 68% and a large Stokes shift of 299 nm. Through comprehensive spectral analysis and meticulous data calculations, we substantiate that the emission originates from STEs formed within the 0D structure. Furthermore, we demonstrate the potential application of [Na2(DMSO)8]Cu4Br6 as an invisible light source in night vision by combining it with a commercially available 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) chip. This work not only enriches the family of low-dimensional metal halide materials but also inspires the potential of low-dimensional metal halides in night vision applications.

Coupling to octahedral tilts in halide perovskite nanocrystals induces phonon-mediated attractive interactions between excitons

Understanding the origin of electron-phonon coupling in lead halide perovskites is key to interpreting and leveraging their optical and electronic properties. Here we show that photoexcitation drives a reduction of the lead-halide-lead bond angles, a result of deformation potential coupling to low-energy optical phonons. We accomplish this by performing femtosecond-resolved, optical-pump-electron-diffraction-probe measurements to quantify the lattice reorganization occurring as a result of photoexcitation in nanocrystals of FAPbBr3. Our results indicate a stronger coupling in FAPbBr3 than CsPbBr3. We attribute the enhanced coupling in FAPbBr3 to its disordered crystal structure, which persists down to cryogenic temperatures. We find the reorganizations induced by each exciton in a multi-excitonic state constructively interfere, giving rise to a coupling strength that scales quadratically with the exciton number. This superlinear scaling induces phonon-mediated attractive interactions between excitations in lead halide perovskites.

Electric-Field Fluctuations as the Cause of Spectral Instabilities in Colloidal Quantum Dots

Spectral diffusion (SD) represents a substantial obstacle toward implementation of solid-state quantum emitters as a source of indistinguishable photons. By performing high-resolution emission spectroscopy for individual colloidal quantum dots at cryogenic temperatures, we prove the causal link between the quantum-confined Stark effect and SD. Statistically analyzing the wavelength of emitted photons, we show that increasing the sensitivity of the transition energy to an applied electric field results in amplified spectral fluctuations. This relation is quantitatively fit to a straightforward model, indicating the presence of a stochastic electric field on a microscopic scale, whose standard deviation is 9 kV/cm, on average. The current method will enable the study of SD in multiple types of quantum emitters such as solid-state defects or organic lead halide perovskite quantum dots, for which spectral instability is a critical barrier for applications in quantum sensing.

Stable and luminescent cesium copper halide nanocrystals embedded in flexible polymer fibers for fabrication of down-converting WLEDs

Recently, CsPbX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have drawn wide attention owing to their outstanding photophysical and optoelectronic properties. However, the toxicity of such NCs remained a big challenge for further commercialization. Herein, we adopt facile methods for synthesizing green-emissive Cs3Cu2Cl5 and blue-emissive Cs3Cu2Br2.5I2.5 perovskite NCs that exhibit broad emission spectra with large Stokes shifts. These NCs showed photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) up to 65% (Cs3Cu2Cl5 NCs) and 32% (Cs3Cu2Br2.5I2.5 NCs) with limited stabilities. To further improve the stability, the NCs were blended with a hydrophobic polymer poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) and embedded inside the polymer fiber by an electrospinning process to form composite fibers. The as-prepared Cs3Cu2Cl5@PMMA and Cs3Cu2Br2.5I2.5@PMMA fiber films demonstrated good surface coverage and better thermal stability, and even retained their emission properties when dispersed in water. The emissive fibers were also deposited on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates that displayed high resistance towards bending and twisting with no signs of breakage, damage, or loss of optical properties. Finally, UV-pumped phosphor-converted WLEDs fabricated by using these blue and green-emitting fibers revealed CIE chromaticity coordinates at (0.27, 0.33) with a maximum luminous efficiency of 69 Lm W-1 and correlated color temperature (CCT) value of 8703 K. These outcomes can be beneficial for the development of futuristic flexible display technologies.

In situ imaging of the atomic phase transition dynamics in metal halide perovskites

Phase transition dynamics are an important concern in the wide applications of metal halide perovskites, which fundamentally determine the optoelectronic properties and stabilities of perovskite materials and devices. However, a more in-depth understanding of such a phase transition process with real atomic resolution is still limited by the immature low-dose electron microscopy and in situ imaging studies to date. Here, we apply an emergent low-dose imaging technique to identify different phase structures (α, β and γ) in CsPbI3 nanocrystals during an in-situ heating process. The rotation angles of PbI6 octahedrons can be measured in these images to quantitatively describe the thermal-induced phase distribution and phase transition. Then, the dynamics of such a phase transition are studied at a macro time scale by continuously imaging the phase distribution in a single nanocrystal. The structural evolution process of CsPbI3 nanocrystals at the particle level, including the changes in morphology and composition, is also visualized with increasing temperature. These results provide atomic insights into the transition dynamics of perovskite phases, indicating a long-time transition process with obvious intermediate states and spatial distribution that should be generally considered in the further study of structure-property relations and device performance.

Bioinspired, vertically stacked, and perovskite nanocrystal-enhanced CMOS imaging sensors for resolving UV spectral signatures

Imaging and identifying target signatures and biomedical markers in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum is broadly important to medical imaging, military target tracking, remote sensing, and industrial automation. However, current silicon-based imaging sensors are fundamentally limited because of the rapid absorption and attenuation of UV light, hindering their ability to resolve UV spectral signatures. Here, we present a bioinspired imaging sensor capable of wavelength-resolved imaging in the UV range. Inspired by the UV-sensitive visual system of the Papilio xuthus butterfly, the sensor monolithically combines vertically stacked photodiodes and perovskite nanocrystals. This imaging design combines two complementary UV detection mechanisms: The nanocrystal layer converts a portion of UV signals into visible fluorescence, detected by the photodiode array, while the remaining UV light is detected by the top photodiode. Our label-free UV fluorescence imaging data from aromatic amino acids and cancer/normal cells enables real-time differentiation of these biomedical materials with 99% confidence.

Bulk CsPbClxBr3-x (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) perovskite nanocrystals/polystyrene nanocomposites with controlled Rayleigh scattering for light guide plate

Perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs)/polymer nanocomposites can combine the advantages of each other, but extremely few works can achieve the fabrication of PNCs/polymer nanocomposites by bulk polymerization. We originally adopt a two-type ligand strategy to fabricate bulk PNCs/polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites, including a new type of synthetic polymerizable ligand. The CsPbCl3 PNCs/PS nanocomposites show extremely high transparency even the doping content up to 5 wt%. The high transparency can be ascribed to the Rayleigh scattering as the PNCs distribute uniformly without obvious aggregation. Based on this behavior, we first exploit the potential of PNCs to serve as scatters inside light guided plate (LGP), whose surface illuminance and uniformity can be improved, and this new kind of LGP is compatible with the advanced liquid crystal display technology. Thanks to the facile composition adjustment of CsPbClxBr3-x (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) PNCs, the Rayleigh scattering behavior can also be adjusted so as to the performance of LGP. The best-performing 5.0-inch LGP based on CsPbCl2.5Br0.5 PNCs/PS nanocomposites shows 20.5 times higher illuminance and 1.8 times higher uniformity in display than the control. The LGP based on PNCs/PS nanocomposite exhibits an enormous potential in commercialization no matter based on itself or combined with the LGP-related technology.
