The Role of Porphyrinoid Photosensitizers for Skin Wound Healing

Microorganisms, usually bacteria and fungi, grow and spread in skin wounds, causing infections. These infections trigger the immune system and cause inflammation and tissue damage within the skin or wound, slowing down the healing process. The use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) to eradicate microorganisms has been regarded as a promising alternative to anti-infective therapies, such as those based on antibiotics, and more recently, is being considered for skin wound-healing, namely for infected wounds. Among the several molecules exploited as photosensitizers (PS), porphyrinoids exhibit suitable features for achieving those goals efficiently. The capability that these macrocycles display to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) gives a significant contribution to the regenerative process. ROS are responsible for avoiding the development of infections by inactivating microorganisms such as bacteria but also by promoting cell proliferation through the activation of stem cells which regulates inflammatory factors and collagen remodeling. The PS can act solo or combined with several materials, such as polymers, hydrogels, nanotubes, or metal-organic frameworks (MOF), keeping both the microbial photoinactivation and healing/regenerative processes' effectiveness. This review highlights the developments on the combination of PDT approach and skin wound healing using natural and synthetic porphyrinoids, such as porphyrins, chlorins and phthalocyanines, as PS, as well as the prodrug 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), the natural precursor of protoporphyrin-IX (PP-IX).

Reactant/polymer hybrid films on p-n junction photodetectors for self-powered, non-invasive glucose biosensors

The portability of electronic-based biosensors is limited because of the use of batteries and/or solutions containing reactants such as enzymes for assay, which limits the utility of such biosensors in point-of-care (POC) testing. In this study, we report on the development of a self-powered biosensor composed of only portable components: a reactant-containing poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) film for the colorimetric assay, and a self-powered n-InGaZnO/p-Si photodetector. The PEG film containing enzymes and color-developing agents was formed on a glass slide by spin coating. The self-powered biosensor was fabricated by placing the hybrid film on the p-n junction photodetector, and applied in non-invasive glucose detection (salivary glucose). Injection of the target-containing solution dissolved the PEG that led to the release of enzymes and color-developing agents, resulting in a colorimetric assay. The colorimetric assay could attenuate the light reaching the photodetector, thus facilitating target concentration verification by measuring the photocurrent. Our self-powered biosensor has two main advantages: (i) all components of the biosensor are portable and (ii) dilution of target concentration is avoided as the reagents are in the PEG film. Therefore, the self-powered biosensor, without solution-phase components, could be highly beneficial for creating portable, sensitive biosensors for POC testing.

The Journey to Precious-Metal-Free Organic Phosphors from Single-Benzene-Cored Fluorophores

This article takes a look back over our research on the development of organic fluorophores that efficiently emit light in the solid state and precious-metal-free phosphors that emit light at room temperature. In particular, we place an emphasis on the prehistory of each project and the relationship between the established molecular designs. Our story starts from the serendipitous discovery of a luminophore with a single benzene core and follows the molecular design and characterization of 2,5-dipiperidyl-1,4-bis(acceptor-substituted ethenyl)benzenes that exhibit solid-state fluorescence with high-to-excellent quantum yields in the blue-to-red region. In addition, the design concepts, luminescence characteristics, and applications of eight novel classes of fluorophores are described, and the discovery, design, and luminescent properties of precious-metal-free compounds that show efficient room-temperature phosphorescence are presented.

Organic-inorganic hybrid tetrachlorocadmates as promising fluorescent agents for cross-linked polyurethanes: synthesis, crystal structures and extended performance analysis

The aim of this work is to apply organic–inorganic hybrid salts made of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium-based cations and halometallate anions as fluorescent agents to modify cross-linked polyurethane (CPU) for the creation of flexible photoluminescent films. The use of ionic compounds ensures excellent dispersion of the luminescent components in the polymer matrix and prevents solid-state quenching. The absence of phase segregation makes it possible to fabricate uniformly luminescent films with a large area. To this, new tetrachlorocadmate salts [L]₂[CdCl₄] (1) and [L′]₂[CdCl₄] (2), where L⁺ is 2-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium and [L′]⁺ is 2-methylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium cations, have been prepared and characterized by IR, NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The organic cations resulted from the oxidative cyclization-condensation involving CH₃NH₂·HCl and 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde in methanol (1), and formaldehyde, CH₃NH₂·HCl and 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde in an aqueous media (2). In the crystal of 1, loosely packed tetrahedral cations and π–π stacked anions are arranged in separate columns parallel to the a-axis. The pseudo-layered structure of 2 is built of the organic and inorganic layers alternating along the a axis. The adjacent CdCl₄²⁻ anions in the inorganic layer show no connectivity. The organic–inorganic hybrids 1 and 2 were immobilized in situ in the cross-linked polyurethane in low content (1 wt%). The photoluminescent properties of 1 and 2 in the solid state and in the polymer films were investigated. The semi-transparent CPU films, that remain stable for months, retain the photoluminescent ability of both hybrids in the blue region with a prominent red shift in their emission.

Hybrid salts made of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium-based cations with easily tunable electronic structures, and halometallate anions that do not include any rare-earth or noble metals were used to fabricate flexible luminescent CPU films.

Charge transfer complexes: Emerging and promising colorimetric real-time chemosensors for hazardous materials

After introducing the concept of charge transfer (CT) complex formation by Mulliken and the discovery of crystalline picrate (association of picric acid and aromatic hydrocarbons) by Fritzsches, a large interest has been drawn in this field. CT complexes have been explored and exploited for different applications for several decades. The research has been aimed mostly for discovering and characterizing new CT materials and exploring applications mainly in the field of optoelectronic properties, antimicrobial activities and DNA/protein binding properties for the last six years. However, nowadays, CT complexes are exploited for their photocatalytic activities and designing chemosensors for the colorimetric real-time detection of hazardous materials like nitro explosives, anions and toxic heavy metal ions in an aqueous medium. This review sheds light on updates on CT complexes, their types, synthesis and applications. The brief discussion on the emergence of CT complexes as highly potential chemosensors along with the explanation of sensing mechanism through article summarization is the centerpiece of this review. The final outcomes are discussed and concluded.

Fabrication of fluorescent hybrid nanomaterials based on carbon dots and its applications for improving the selective detection of Fe (III) in different matrices and cellular imaging

Considering that detection on cations or ions still meets some challenges in achieving the effectivity and selectivity just by employing one platform, the ingenious fabrication of nanomaterials exhibits an increasing research interests for the preponderance in improving or integrating the performance of single platform. Herein, a fluorescent hybrid nanomaterials based on an organic dye 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) as modifier and D-arginine as carbon cores has been developed via a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis, forming carbon dots (CDs)/4-MU hybrid nanomaterials (CDs-4-MU). This kind of nanomaterials can improve the sensitive and selective detection of single CDs towards Fe³⁺ ions in different matrices. The detection mechanism of CDs-4-MU towards Fe³⁺ can be attributed to an electron transfer process between CDs-4-MU and Fe³⁺, leading to the fluorescence quenching. The limit of detection (LOD) and corresponding linear range in tris-HCl buffer solution are 0.68 μM and 2.29-200 μM, respectively. Furthermore, this nanomaterial can also achieve a detection of Fe³⁺ ions in real samples such as tap water, culture medium and fetal bovine serum. In particular, CDs-4-MU exhibits a good biocompatibility and can be uptaken by MC3T3 cells, thus can be applied for Fe³⁺ ions detection in cellular level and cellular imaging. Therefore, this work provides a versatile strategy for the synthesis of CDs-based hybrid nanomaterials and opens a new pathway for improving the ion detection in real samples, which is of significance in practical applications.

Enhanced luminescence through interface energy transfer in hierarchical heterogeneous nanocomposites and application in white LEDs

Highly efficient light-emitting materials are essential for achieving high-performance devices. Here, a novel composite system, as well as enhanced luminescence processes, was designed, where NaLn(MoO₄)₂ ultra-small nucleus can be effectively isolated by In(OH)₃ to form NaLn(MoO₄)₂@In(OH)₃ composite nanoclusters due to the different nucleation rate between NaLn(MoO₄)₂ and In(OH)₃, and then these small composite clusters gradually self-assemble into hierarchical structures. As we expected, the enhanced luminescence was achieved from hierarchical NaLn(MoO₄)₂ nanostructures with adjusting the distance among NaLn(MoO₄)₂ ultra-small nucleus by inserting In(OH)₃. A series of spectroscopy results show that the In(OH)₃ not only acts as an energy transfer bridge from CTB Eu³⁺ → O^2- (or MoO₄^2- absorption) to Eu³⁺, but also can effectively alleviate the concentration quenching of Ln³⁺ and change the J-O parameters. The Raman peak at 134 cm^-1 is helpful to populate the ⁵D₀ level of Eu³⁺ or the excited states of Er³⁺, resulting in stronger up/down-conversion emissions. The use of NaLn(MoO₄)₂@In(OH)₃ in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has been demonstrated. The combination of red emission from NaLn(MoO₄)₂@In(OH)₃ with blue, green, and yellow emission from halide perovskites could achieve white light with excellent vision performance (an LER of 376 lm/W) and superior color quality (CRI > 92). The findings of this experiment provide a new idea for the design of composite interface materials.

Cationic Pyrrolidine/Pyrroline-Substituted Porphyrins as Efficient Photosensitizers against E. coli

New porphyrin–pyrrolidine/pyrroline conjugates were prepared by revisiting 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions between a porphyrinic azomethine ylide and a series of dipolarophiles. Cationic conjugates obtained by alkylation of the pyrrolidine/pyrroline cycloadducts showed ability to generate singlet oxygen and to produce iodine in presence of KI when irradiated with visible light. Some of the cationic derivatives showed photobactericidal properties towards a Gram-negative bioluminescent E. coli. In all cases, these features were significantly improved using KI as coadjutant, allowing, under the tested conditions, the photoinactivation of the bacterium until the detection limit of the method with a drastic reduction of the required photosensitizer concentration and irradiation time. The obtained results showed a high correlation between the ability of the cationic porphyrin derivative to produce singlet oxygen and iodine and its E. coli photoinactivation profile.

Ultra-stable fluorescent film sensor based on quantum dots for the real-time detection of Cu2

Fluorescent films have recently gained attention as chemo-sensors for real-time detection in view of their high sensitivity and rapid response. However, these sensors are usually sensitive to UV irradiation, high temperature, etc., which seriously affects sensing accuracy and limits practical use. Here, an ultra-stable fluorescent film sensor based on CdSe/Cd_xZn_1-xS QDs and polyamide-6 nanofibrous membranes has been developed for the detection of Cu²⁺. To achieve high fluorescence stability, QDs with high colloidal stability are evenly immobilized on the surface of electrospun nanofibres by a dip-coating method, which can avoid fluorescence quenching caused by aggregation in the electrospinning process. As a result, the film sensor exhibits nearly constant PL intensity under the following conditions: pH values from 5.0 to 13.0, high temperature of 100 °C, 365 nm UV light for 60 min and long preservation time of 90 days. Under optimized conditions, a linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence quenching of the film and the concentration of Cu²⁺ in the range of 0-100 μM. In addition, the film sensor responds visually with a detection limit of 10 μM and response time of 10 s, which enabled it to be used as test strips in real-time detection and may provide new insights for the detection of other substances.

Synergy of Excitation Enhancement and the Purcell Effect for Strong Photoluminescence Enhancement in a Thin-Film Hybrid Structure Based on Quantum Dots and Plasmon Nanoparticles

Reliable control of spontaneous radiation from quantum emitters, such as quantum dots (QDs), is an extremely important problem in quantum science, nanophotonics, and engineering. The QD photoluminescence (PL) may be enhanced near plasmon nanoparticles because of excitation field enhancement or the Purcell effect. However, both of these effects have their specific limitations. The excitation enhancement is usually accompanied by a decrease in the PL quantum yield (QY) due to the plasmon-induced energy transfer, and the Purcell effect cannot significantly enhance the PL of QDs with an initially high QY because of the obvious limitation of the QY by the value of 100%. Here, we have shown that the synergistic combination of excitation enhancement caused by silver nanospheres and the Purcell effect caused by silver nanoplates in the same QD-in-polymer hybrid thin-film nanostructure permits simultaneous increases in the radiative and excitation rates to be obtained. This overcomes the limitations of each individual effect and yields a synergistic PL increase (+1320%) greater than the sum of the PL enhancements determined by each effect alone (+70% and +360%).

BOPAHY: a doubly chelated highly fluorescent pyrrole-acyl hydrazone -BF2 chromophore

New easily functionalisable and highly fluorescent BOPAHY chromophores are synthesised via a one-pot two-step reaction starting from commercially available pyrrole-2-carbaldehydes and respective acyl hydrazides in the presence of BF₃·OEt₂. Most importantly, all BOPAHY dyes show excellent photophysical properties with quantum yields up to 0.92. Steady-state spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations provide a first insight into these promising properties.

Dual-Mode Light-Emitting Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Water and Thermal Stability and Their Application in White LEDs

It is well known that the upconversion luminescence from lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) is difficult to achieve, and thus, there are few reports on dual luminescence-based MOFs. Here, dual-mode light-emitting Ln-MOFs are synthesized using a low-cost hydrothermal method. Our results show that the obtained Ln-MOFs not only have high thermal stability (up to 420°) but also are stable in deionized water. The dual-mode up- and downconversion luminescence is simultaneously observed from Er-Eu-MOFs. The temperature-dependent fluorescence decay time is calculated to be ranging from 0.46 to 0.36 ms for temperatures from 100 to 300 K. We suggested that this phenomenon was because the number of phonons participating in the MOF matrix increases with temperature during the luminescence process, and the phonons interact with the electrons in the material. The values of the J-O parameters calculated from the emission spectra indicated that the symmetry around Eu³⁺ ions in Eu-MOF is the highest, which was also higher than that of Er-Eu-MOF. To explore the potential applications of Eu-MOFs in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), red emission from Eu-MOFs was combined with blue, green, and yellow emissions from metal halide perovskites to achieve white light emission. White light with excellent color quality and vision performance was obtained. These findings demonstrate that Ln-MOFs are potentially successful materials for applications in white LEDs.

Visualization of materials using the confocal laser scanning microscopy technique

The development of materials science always benefits from advanced characterizations. Currently, imaging techniques are of great technological importance in both fundamental and applied research on materials. In comparison to conventional visualization methods, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is non-invasive, with macroscale and high-contrast scanning, a simple and fast sample preparation procedure as well as easy operation. In addition, CLSM allows rapid acquisition of longitudinal and cross-sectional images at any position in a material. Therefore, the CLSM-based visualization technique could provide direct and model-independent insight into material characterizations. This review summarizes the recent applications of CLSM in materials science. The current CLSM approaches for the visualization of surface structures, internal structures, spatial structures and reaction processes are discussed in detail. Finally, we provide our thoughts and predictions on the future development of CLSM in materials science. The purpose of this review is to guide researchers to build a suitable CLSM approach for material characterizations, and to open viable opportunities and inspirations for the development of new strategies aiming at the preparation of advanced materials. We hope that this review will be useful for a wide range of research communities of materials science, chemistry, and engineering.

Silicotungstic acid as a highly efficient coreactant for luminol chemiluminescence for sensitive detection of uric acid

Herein, we report luminol-silicotungstic acid (STA) chemiluminescence (CL) for the first time. The luminol-STA system resulted in remarkable CL enhancement (65 times) compared with the known classical luminol-H₂O₂ system because of the generation of the strong oxidizing agent tungsten trioxide from STA. Based on the quenching effect of uric acid, the new CL system is applied for the sensitive and selective assay of uric acid in its pure state (LOD 0.75 nM) and in real human urine with excellent recoveries in the range of 99.6-102.3%. Furthermore, this system permits the efficient detection of STA (LOD, 0.24 μM).

Complementary Color Tuning by HCl via Phosphorescence-to-Fluorescence Conversion on Insulated Metallopolymer Film and Its Light-Induced Acceleration

An insulated metallopolymer that undergoes phosphorescence-to-fluorescence conversion between complementary colors by an acid-stimulus is proposed as a color-tunable material. A Pt-based phosphorescent metallopolymer, where the conjugated polymeric backbone is insulated by a cyclodextrin, is depolymerized by HCl via acidic cleavage of Pt-acetylide bonds to form a fluorescent monomer. The insulation enables phosphorescence-to-fluorescence conversion to take place in the solid film. Rapid color change was achieved by accelerating the reaction between the metallopolymer and HCl by UV irradiation. These approaches are expected to provide new guidelines for the development of next-generation color-tunable materials and printable sensors based on precise molecular engineering.

Fluorescent supramolecular hierarchical self-assemblies from glycosylated 4-amino- and 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimides

In situ fabrication of a luminescent copper nanocluster/eggshell membrane composite and its application in visual detection of Ag+ ions, light-emitting diodes and surface patterning

In this work, we report a novel strategy for fabricating a luminescent 2D nanocomposite at room temperature by in situ generation of luminescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) embedded in natural monolithic eggshell membrane (ESM) using dithiothreitol as the reducing and capping agent. The established fabrication is facile, cost-effective and viable. The as-prepared Cu NC/ESM nanocomposite exhibited excellent photoluminescence performance, improved chemical, thermal and photo stability, convenient tailoring and flexibility. Significantly, the nanocomposites could be employed as test strips for the visual detection of Ag⁺ ions based on the luminescence quenching phenomenon and as color conversion layers in light-emitting diodes. Furthermore, application of the proposed strategy for surface luminescence patterning was well demonstrated, indicating great potential in biomass based anti-counterfeiting, information encryption and security paper or sheets.

Gold nanocap-supported upconversion nanoparticles for fabrication of a solid-phase aptasensor to detect ochratoxin A

Solid-phase, single-step biosensors are crucial for the development of portable, reusable, and convenient biosensors, otherwise known as point-of-care (POC) testing. Although high-performance single-step biosensors based on the principle of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) functionalized with aptamers have been suggested as easy-to-use platforms, they lack portability and reusability when used for solution-phase biosensing. In this study, we describe a solid-phase, single-step aptasensor that showed higher performance than those of solution-phase aptasensors, as well as promising reusability. The solid-phase, single-step aptasensor was developed based on Au nanocap-supported UCNPs (Au/UCNPs), which were partially embedded in a solid substrate (e.g. polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS). The Au nanocaps allowed the UCNPs to emit upconverted light only from the restricted areas of the UCNPs, i.e., where they were not covered by the nanocaps and PDMS. Functionalization of an aptamer labeled with a quencher on the restricted area enabled the effective quenching of upconverted light from Au/UCNP via FRET after target (ochratoxin A, OTA) detection. The solid-phase, single-step aptasensor showed a linear range of 0.1-1000 ng mL^-1 and limit of detection of 0.022 ng mL^-1 within 30 min toward OTA. Furthermore, reusability of the solid-phase aptasensor was evaluated for three cycles of detection and regeneration, establishing its apparent reusability via heat treatment. Hence, such solid-phase, single-step aptasensors pave the path to the development of a portable and reusable biosensor platform for POC testing.

Optical and electrochemical-based nano-aptasensing approaches for the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs)

More recently, detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) has been considered as an appealing prognostic and diagnostic approach for cancer patients. CTCs as a type of tumor-derived cells are secreted by the tumor and released into the blood circulation. Since the migration of CTCs is an early event in cancer progression, patients who still have tumor-free lymph nodes have to be well examined for the CTCs presence in their blood circulation. Nowadays, there is a broad range of detection methods available to identify CTCs. As artificial RNA oligonucleotides or single-stranded DNA with receptor and catalytic characteristics, aptamers have been standing out, owing to their target-induced conformational modifications, elevated stability, and target specificity to be implemented in biosensing techniques. To date, several sensitivity-enhancement methods alongside smart nanomaterials have been used for the creation of new aptasensors to address the limit of detection (LOD), and improve the sensitivity of numerous analyte identification methods. The present review article supports a focused overview of the recent studies in the identification and quantitative determination of CTCs by aptamer-based biosensors and nanobiosensors.

Highly Robust Organometallic Small-Molecule-Based Nonvolatile Resistive Memory Controlled by a Redox-Gated Switching Mechanism

Although organic small-molecule-based memory devices (OSMDs) have been demonstrated to show great potential for the application in next-generation data-storage technology, progress toward their further development has been hugely hindered by the ambiguity of their electrical switching mechanism. Thus, purposely fabricating OSMDs with a definite switching behavior is very urgent. Here, we reported a redox-gated nonvolatile rewritable memory device using an organometallic small molecule as an active material. By introducing the redox-active ferrocene into an organic skeleton, the target small molecule exhibits reliable and robust FLASH-type bistable electrical characteristics with a clear redox-controlled switching mechanism, which leads to low operational voltages, good endurance, and long retention. Our study offers a proof-of-concept strategy to design controllable OSMDs with excellent performances.

Multistage Signals Based on Cyclic Chemiluminescence for Decoding Complex Samples

Identification of complex samples presents a difficult challenge for modern analytical techniques, and the differentiation among closely similar mixtures often remains indeterminate. In this article, we designed a simplified cyclic chemiluminescence (CCL) system that is able to measure multistage signals in a single sample injection. The system was used to investigate the CCL reactions of the binary, ternary, and multicomponent mixtures. Results showed that each mixture has a unique exponential decay equation (EDE) with a constant decay coefficient (k-value) to describe the change law of its multistage signals. Further studies found that different brands of liquor, beer, toner, and baby powder have different k-values, and the same brand of the commodities between different batches have the same k-values, which allows facile identification of these complex samples. We then used different catalysts to design digital codes of the k-value for further improving the identifying ability of CCL. Moreover, the multistage signals are like fingerprints and could be used for linear discriminate analysis, which provides another complementary approach for identification of complex samples. Finally, we demonstrated that CCL shows potential applications in certification and quality assurance according to the change of the k-values of the sample. This work demonstrates that excellent discrimination ability of CCL for the identification of complex samples and provides a promising technology for quality assurance.

Naked-Eye Heterogeneous Sensing of Fluoride Ions by Co-Polymeric Nanosponge Systems Comprising Aromatic-Imide-Functionalized Nanocellulose and Branched Polyethyleneimine

Heterogeneous colorimetric sensors for fluoride ions were obtained by cross-linking TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with chemically modified branched polyethyleneimine 25 kDa (bPEI). Functionalization of bPEI primary amino groups with aromatic anhydrides led to the formation of the corresponding mono- and bis-imides on the grafted polymers (f-bPEI). A microwave-assisted procedure allowed the optimization of the synthetic protocol by reducing reaction time from 17 h to 30 minutes. Hydrogels obtained by mixing different ratios of TOCNF, bPEI and f-bPEI were lyophilized and thermally treated at about 100 °C to promote the formation of amide bonds between the amino groups of poly-cationic polymers and the carboxylic groups of cellulose nanofibers. This approach generated a series of cellulose nanosponges S1-S3 which were characterized by FT-IR and by solid state ¹³ C CPMAS NMR. These sponge materials can act as colorimetric sensors for the selective naked-eye recognition of fluoride ions over chloride, phosphate and acetate ions at concentrations of up to 0.05 M in DMSO. Moreover, when the sponges were functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic diimide, successful naked-eye detection was achieved with only 0.02 % w/w of chromophore units per gram of material.

A flexible smart membrane consisting of GO composite fibres and upconversion MSNs for microRNA detection

We have developed a photoluminescent membrane for microRNA detection, consisting of chemically modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (CaF2:Yb/Ho@MSNs) attached, via single stranded DNA probes, to flexible polyurethane fibres coated with graphene oxide (GO). By detecting the release of the luminescent nanoparticles resulting from complementary co-hybridization between target miRNA sequences and the DNA probe, accurate measurements of the miRNA concentration at high sensitivity levels can be obtained. The constructs therefore offer a route to rapid detection and the potential for early cancer diagnosis.

(Poly)terephthalates with Efficient Blue Emission in the Solid State

We prepared dimethyl and diaryl 2,5-dialkoxytere-phthalates from dimethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate in good-to-high yields via alkylation or a sequence of alkylation, hydrolysis, chlorination, and condensation. The absorption spectra of the dialkoxyterephthalates contain a small band at 332-355 nm, which could be assigned to intramolecular charge-transfer transition from the alkoxy to alkoxycarbonyl groups on the basis of theoretical calculations using density functional theory. The dialkoxyterephthalates exhibited blue fluorescence with moderate-to-excellent quantum yields not only in solution but also in the solid state, such as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film and a powder. The solid-state quantum yields of the diisopropoxy-substituted terephthalates were similar or considerably higher than those of the dimethoxy-substituted counterparts. Copolymerization of 2,5-diisopropoxyterephthaloyl chloride and 1,4-butanediol with or without terephthaloyl chloride gave brilliantly blue fluorescent polymers, whose quantum yields were 0.72 and 0.71 in toluene and 0.46 and 0.40 in the neat film, respectively. Furthermore, white emission was achieved when a fluorescent yellow 2,5-diaminoterephthalate was doped into the thin film of the blue fluorescent polymer at 0.4 wt %.

Selective Detection of Trinitrophenol by Amphiphilic Dimethylaminopyridine-Appended Zn(II)phthalocyanines at the Near-Infrared Region

Novel amphiphilic Zn(II)phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) peripherally substituted with four and eight dimethylaminopyridinium units (ZnPc1 and ZnPc2) were synthesized by cyclotetramerization of the corresponding phthalonitriles. The effect of aggregation and photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes) and photochemical (singlet oxygen generation and photodegradation under light irradiation) properties was investigated. The chemosensing ability of ZnPcs toward explosive nitroaromatic compounds was explored in aqueous medium. This study demonstrates that ZnPc1 and ZnPc2 show fluorescence quenching behavior upon interaction with different nitro analytes and show unprecedented selectivity toward 2,4,6-trinitrophenol with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.7-1.1 ppm with a high quenching rate constant (K _sv) of 1.6-2.02 × 10⁵. The near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence in thin films was quenched efficiently because of the photoinduced electron-transfer process through strong intermolecular π-π and electrostatic interactions. The sensing process is highly reversible and free from the interference of other commonly encountered nitro analytes. Further, experiments were performed to demonstrate the use of ZnPcs as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts in the reduction of nitro explosives. The smart dual performance of multicharged ZnPcs in aqueous media quantifies them as attractive candidates in developing sensor materials at the NIR region and to possibly convert the toxic explosives into useful scaffolds. These results provide an interesting perspective toward elaboration of stable fluorescent systems for the selective sensing behavior of nitro explosives and their facile heterogeneous catalytic behavior in the reduction reactions.

Ligand-assisted reduction and reprecipitation synthesis of highly luminescent metal nanoclusters

Solid-state luminescent materials play a key role in fabricating light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, highly luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) are synthesized using a ligand-assisted reduction and reprecipitation process. Glutathione (GSH) dissolved in a good solvent (water) is injected into a poor solvent (ethanol in which Cu²⁺ is dissolved), where the fast reduction of Cu²⁺ by GSH and the supersaturation-induced aggregation triggered by the solubility change of GSH upon solvent mixing occur. Nanoparticles with diameters of around 50-80 nm embedded with small-sized Cu NCs (around 2 nm) can be obtained and processed into powders simply by drying the solvent. The powders show bright-orange emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 48%. Nearly monoexponential behavior was observed in the photoluminescence decay profiles of the Cu NCs, which can be attributed to the abundance of metal defect-related states formed with the assistance of coordination between Cu and ethanol. Moreover, white LEDs were fabricated using blue-emissive commercial phosphors and orange-emissive Cu NCs as color converters integrated with UV LED chips.

ZnII Complexes for Bioimaging and Correlated Applications

Zinc is a biocompatible element that exists as the second most abundant transition metal ion and an indispensable trace element in the human body. Compared to traditional metal-organic complexes systems, d¹⁰ metal Zn^II complexes not only exhibit a large Stokes shift and good photon stability but also possess strong emission and low cytotoxicity with a relatively small molecular weight. The use of Zn^II complexes has emerged in the last decade as a versatile and convenient tool for numerous biological applications, including bioimaging, molecular and protein recognition, as well as photodynamic therapy. Herein, we review recent developments involving Zn^II metal complexes applied as specific subcellular compartment imaging probes and their correlated utilizations.

Fluorescent Amorphous Distyrylnaphthalene-Based Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization and Thin-Film Nanomolar Sensing of Nitroaromatics in Water

Two new fluorescent segmented conjugated polymers with either 1,4- or 2,6-distyrylnaphthalene chromophores and their model compounds were synthesized and the chemosensing abilities of the polymeric thin films to detect nitroaromatics (NACs) in aqueous media were evaluated. The structural, thermal and optical properties of the polymers were correlated with those displayed by their corresponding model compounds. Changes in the connectivity of naphthylene units caused minor differences in optical properties, morphology and quenching efficiencies. Molecular modeling highlighted the extremely bent character of polymer microstructures that explains their high solubility and amorphous character. Polymeric films are amorphous, strongly fluorescent and showed remarkable quenching efficiencies in the nanomolar range with picric acid (PA) and trinitrotoluene (TNT). Quenching experiments using either different nitroaromatic quenchers, excitation wavelengths, excitation beam path-lengths, or time of exposure of the film to the quenching solution evidenced the dominant role of inner filter effects (IFE) in the polymer response to NACs in the micromolar range. The sensing response towards PA, a quencher that strongly absorbs at the excitation wavelength, has an IFE contribution even at the nanomolar range, while the response towards the non-absorbing TNT depends only on the quenching occurring after diffusion of the analyte into the film.
