Spatial coding of visual and somatic sensory information in body-centred coordinates

A Monte Carlo method for locally multivariate brain mapping

Locally multivariate approaches to functional brain mapping offer a highly appealing complement to conventional statistics, but require restrictive region-of-interest hypotheses, or, in exhaustive search forms (such as the "searchlight" algorithm; Kriegeskorte et al., 2006), are excessively computer intensive. We therefore propose a non-restrictive, comparatively fast yet highly sensitive method based on Monte Carlo approximation principles where locally multivariate maps are computed by averaging across voxelwise condition-discriminative information obtained from repeated stochastic sampling of fixed-size search volumes. On simulated data containing discriminative regions of varying size and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), the Monte Carlo method reduced the required computer resources by as much as 75% compared to the searchlight with no reduction in mapping performance. Notably, the Monte Carlo mapping approach not only outperformed the general linear method (GLM), but also produced higher discriminative voxel detection scores than the searchlight irrespective of classifier (linear or nonlinear support vector machine), discriminative region size or CNR. The improved performance was explained by the information-average procedure, and the Monte Carlo approach yielded mapping sensitivities of a few percent lower than an information-average exhaustive search. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of the algorithm on whole-brain, multi-subject functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from a tactile study, revealing that the central representation of gentle touch is spatially distributed in somatosensory, insular and visual regions.

Visuotactile representation of peripersonal space: a neural network study

Neurophysiological and behavioral studies suggest that the peripersonal space is represented in a multisensory fashion by integrating stimuli of different modalities. We developed a neural network to simulate the visual-tactile representation of the peripersonal space around the right and left hands. The model is composed of two networks (one per hemisphere), each with three areas of neurons: two are unimodal (visual and tactile) and communicate by synaptic connections with a third downstream multimodal (visual-tactile) area. The hemispheres are interconnected by inhibitory synapses. We applied a combination of analytic and computer simulation techniques. The analytic approach requires some simplifying assumptions and approximations (linearization and a reduced number of neurons) and is used to investigate network stability as a function of parameter values, providing some emergent properties. These are then tested and extended by computer simulations of a more complex nonlinear network that does not rely on the previous simplifications. With basal parameter values, the extended network reproduces several in vivo phenomena: multisensory coding of peripersonal space, reinforcement of unisensory perception by multimodal stimulation, and coexistence of simultaneous right- and left-hand representations in bilateral stimulation. By reducing the strength of the synapses from the right tactile neurons, the network is able to mimic the responses characteristic of right-brain-damaged patients with left tactile extinction: perception of unilateral left tactile stimulation, cross-modal extinction and cross-modal facilitation in bilateral stimulation. Finally, a variety of sensitivity analyses on some key parameters was performed to shed light on the contribution of single-model components in network behaviour. The model may help us understand the neural circuitry underlying peripersonal space representation and identify its alterations explaining neurological deficits. In perspective, it could help in interpreting results of psychophysical and behavioral trials and clarifying the neural correlates of multisensory-based rehabilitation procedures.

Neural substrates of visuospatial processing in distinct reference frames: evidence from unilateral spatial neglect

There is evidence for different levels of visuospatial processing with their own frames of reference: viewer-centered, stimulus-centered, and object-centered. The neural locus of these levels can be explored by examining lesion location in subjects with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) manifest in these reference frames. Most studies regarding the neural locus of USN have treated it as a homogenous syndrome, resulting in conflicting results. In order to further explore the neural locus of visuospatial processes differentiated by frame of reference, we presented a battery of tests to 171 subjects within 48 hr after right supratentorial ischemic stroke before possible structural and/or functional reorganization. The battery included MR perfusion weighted imaging (which shows hypoperfused regions that may be dysfunctional), diffusion weighted imaging (which reveals areas of infarct or dense ischemia shortly after stroke onset), and tests designed to disambiguate between various types of neglect. Results were consistent with a dorsal/ventral stream distinction in egocentric/allocentric processing. We provide evidence that portions of the dorsal stream of visual processing, including the right supramarginal gyrus, are involved in spatial encoding in egocentric coordinates, whereas parts of the ventral stream (including the posterior inferior temporal gyrus) are involved in allocentric encoding.

Tell me your vestibular deficit, and i'll tell you how you'll compensate

Most patients with unilateral vestibular loss exhibit a similar static and dynamic vestibular syndrome consisting of vestibulo-ocular, posturolocomotor, and perceptive deficits. This vestibular syndrome recovers more or less completely and more or less rapidly over time. One open question is whether recovery mechanisms differ according to vestibular pathology and/or patients. It is reported here (1) data from three different cat models of unilateral vestibular loss reproducing vestibular pathology with sudden (unilateral vestibular neurectomy [UVN] model), gradual (unilateral labyrinthectomy [UL] model), or reversible (tetrodotoxine [TTX]) model) loss of vestibular function, and (2) clinical observations in a population of unilateral vestibular loss patients suffering the same pathology (Menière's disease). Animal models show that time courses and mechanisms of recovery depend on the type of vestibular deafferentation, and clinical findings show that Menière's patients compensate their postural and perceptive deficits using different vicarious processes. Taken together, results point to a more complex picture of compensation after unilateral vestibular loss, which cannot be reduced either to a common recovery mechanism or to a single process identical for all individuals. These findings should guide physiotherapists in treatment and rehabilitation for vestibular deficits.

Alterations in midline cortical thickness and gyrification patterns mapped in children with 22q11.2 deletions

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (velocardiofacial/DiGeorge syndrome) is a neurogenetic condition associated with visuospatial deficits, as well as elevated rates of attentional disturbance, mood disorder, and psychosis. Previously, we detected pronounced cortical thinning in superior parietal and right parieto-occipital cortices in patients with this syndrome, regions critical for visuospatial processing. Here we applied cortical pattern-matching algorithms to structural magnetic resonance images obtained from 21 children with confirmed 22q11.2 deletions (ages 8-17) and 13 demographically matched comparison subjects, in order to map cortical thickness across the medial hemispheric surfaces. In addition, cortical models were remeshed in frequency space to compute their surface complexity. Cortical maps revealed a pattern of localized thinning in the ventromedial occipital-temporal cortex, critical for visuospatial representation, and the anterior cingulate, a key area for attentional control. However, children with 22q11.2DS showed significantly increased gyral complexity bilaterally in occipital cortex. Regional gray matter volumes, particularly in medial frontal cortex, were strongly correlated with both verbal and nonverbal cognitive functions. These findings suggest that aberrant parieto-occipital brain development, as evidenced by both increased complexity and cortical thinning in these regions, may be a neural substrate for the deficits in visuospatial and numerical understanding characteristic of this syndrome.

Vestibular syndrome: a change in internal spatial representation

The vestibular system contributes to a wide range of functions from reflexes to spatial representation. This paper reviews behavioral, perceptive, and cognitive data that highlight the role of changes in internal spatial representation on the vestibular syndrome. Firstly, we review how visual vertical perception and postural orientation depend on multiple reference frames and multisensory integration and how reference frames are selected according to the status of the peripheral vestibular system (i.e., unilateral or bilateral hyporeflexia), the environmental constraints (i.e., sensory cues), and the postural constraints (i.e., balance control). We show how changes in reference frames are able to modify vestibular lesion-induced postural and locomotor deficits and propose that fast changes in reference frame may be considered as fast-adaptive processes after vestibular loss. Secondly, we review data dealing with the influence of vestibular loss on higher levels of internal representation sustaining spatial orientation and navigation. Particular emphasis is placed on spatial performance according to task complexity (i.e., the required level of spatial knowledge) and to the sensory cues available to define the position and orientation within the environment (i.e., real navigation in darkness or visual virtual navigation without any actual self-motion). We suggest that vestibular signals are necessary for other sensory cues to be properly integrated and that vestibular cues are involved in extrapersonal space representation. In this respect, vestibular-induced changes would be based on a dynamic mental representation of space that is continuously updated and that supports fast-adaptive processes.

2D co-ordinate transformation based on a spike timing-dependent plasticity learning mechanism

In order to plan accurate motor actions, the brain needs to build an integrated spatial representation associated with visual stimuli and haptic stimuli. Since visual stimuli are represented in retina-centered co-ordinates and haptic stimuli are represented in body-centered co-ordinates, co-ordinate transformations must occur between the retina-centered co-ordinates and body-centered co-ordinates. A spiking neural network (SNN) model, which is trained with spike-timing-dependent-plasticity (STDP), is proposed to perform a 2D co-ordinate transformation of the polar representation of an arm position to a Cartesian representation, to create a virtual image map of a haptic input. Through the visual pathway, a position signal corresponding to the haptic input is used to train the SNN with STDP synapses such that after learning the SNN can perform the co-ordinate transformation to generate a representation of the haptic input with the same co-ordinates as a visual image. The model can be applied to explain co-ordinate transformation in spiking neuron based systems. The principle can be used in artificial intelligent systems to process complex co-ordinate transformations represented by biological stimuli.

Pain and stress in a systems perspective: reciprocal neural, endocrine, and immune interactions

This paper advances a psychophysiological systems view of pain in which physical injury, or wounding, generates a complex stress response that extends beyond the nervous system and contributes to the experience of pain. Through a common chemical language comprising neurotransmitters, peptides, endocannabinoids, cytokines, and hormones, an ensemble of interdependent nervous, endocrine, and immune processes operates in concert to cope with the injury. These processes act as a single agent and comprise a supersystem. Acute pain in its multiple dimensions, and the related symptoms that commonly occur with it, are products of the supersystem. Chronic pain can develop as a result of unusual stress. Social stressors can compound the stress resulting from a wound or act alone to dysregulate the supersystem. When the supersystem suffers dysregulation, health, function, and sense of well-being suffer. Some chronic pain conditions are the product of supersystem dysregulation. Individuals vary and are vulnerable to dysregulation and dysfunction in particular organ systems due to the unique interactions of genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors, as well as the past experiences that characterize each person.

PERSPECTIVE

Acute tissue injury activates an ensemble of interdependent nervous, endocrine, and immune processes that operate in concert and comprise a supersystem. Some chronic pain conditions result from supersystem dysregulation. Individuals vary and are vulnerable to dysregulation due to the unique interactions of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors and past experiences that characterize each person. This perspective can potentially assist clinicians in assessing and managing chronic pain patients.

Visuospatial working memory and changes of the point of view in 3D space

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore the brain mechanisms of changing point of view (PoV) in a visuospatial memory task in 3D space. Eye movements were monitored and BOLD signal changes were measured while subjects were presented with 3D images of a virtual environment. Subjects were required to encode the position of a lamp in the environment and, after changing the PoV (angular difference varied from 0 degrees to 180 degrees in 45 degrees steps), to decide whether the lamp position had been changed too or not. Performance data and a scan-path analysis based on eye movement support the use of landmarks in the environment for coding lamp position and increasing spatial updating costs with increasing changes of PoV indicating allocentric coding strategies during all conditions (0 degrees - to 180 degrees -condition). Subtraction analysis using SPM revealed that a parieto-temporo-frontal network including left medial temporal areas was activated during this 3D visuospatial task, independent of angular difference. The activity of the left parahippocampal area and the left lingual gyrus (but not the hippocampus) correlated with increasing changes of the PoV between encoding and retrieval, emphasizing their specific role in spatial scene memory and allocentric coding. The results suggest that these areas are involved in a continuous matching process between internal representations of the environment and the external status quo. In addition, hippocampal activation correlated with performance was found indicating successful recall of spatial information. Finally, in a prefrontal area comprising, the so-called "deep" frontal eye field, activation was correlated with the amount of saccadic eye movements confirming its role in oculomotor processes.

Retrosplenial and hippocampal brain regions in human navigation: complementary functional contributions to the formation and use of cognitive maps

The ability to orientate within familiar environments relies on the formation and use of a mental representation of the environment, namely a cognitive map. Neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies suggest that the retrosplenial and hippocampal brain regions are involved in topographical orientation. We combined functional magnetic resonance imaging with a virtual-reality paradigm to investigate the functional interaction of the hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex during the formation and utilization of cognitive maps by human subjects. We found that the anterior hippocampus is involved during the formation of the cognitive map, while the posterior hippocampus is involved when using it. In conjunction with the hippocampus, the retrosplenial cortex was active during both the formation and the use of the cognitive map. In accordance with earlier studies in non-human animals, these findings suggest that, while navigating within the environment, the retrosplenial cortex complements the hippocampal contribution to topographical orientation by updating the individual's location as the frame of reference changes.

Vestibular integration in human cerebral cortex contributes to spatial remapping

The process of visuo-spatial updating is crucial in guiding human behaviour. While the parietal cortex has long been considered a principal candidate for performing spatial transformations, the exact underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we investigated in a patient with a right occipito-parietal lesion the ability to update the visual space during vestibularly guided saccades. To quantify the possible deficits in visual and vestibular memory processes, we studied the subject's performance in two separate memory tasks, visual (VIS) and vestibular (VES). In the VIS task, a saccade was elicited from a central fixation point to the location of a visual memorized target and in the VEST task, the saccade was elicited after whole-body rotation to the starting position thus compensating for the rotation. Finally, in an updating task (UPD), the subject had to memorize the position of a visual target then after a whole-body rotation he had to produce a saccade to the remembered visual target location in space. Our main findings was a significant hypometria in the final eye position of both VEST and UPD saccades induced during rotation to the left (contralesional) hemispace as compared to saccades induced after right (ipsilesional) rotation. Moreover, these deficits in vestibularly guided saccades correlated with deficits in vestibulo-ocular time constant, reflecting disorders in the inertial vestibular integration path. We conclude that the occipito-parietal cortex in man can provide a first stage in visuo-spatial remapping by encoding inertial head position signals during gaze orientation.

Dissociable retrosplenial and hippocampal contributions to successful formation of survey representations

During everyday navigation, humans encounter complex environments predominantly from a first-person perspective. Behavioral evidence suggests that these perceptual experiences can be used not only to acquire route knowledge but also to directly assemble map-like survey representations. Most studies of human navigation focus on the retrieval of previously learned environments, and the neural foundations of integrating sequential views into a coherent representation are not yet fully understood. We therefore used our recently introduced virtual-reality paradigm, which provides accuracy and reaction-time measurements precisely indicating the emergence of survey knowledge, and functional magnetic resonance imaging while participants repeatedly encoded a complex environment from a first-person ground-level perspective. Before the experiment, we gave specific instructions to induce survey learning, which, based on the clear evidence for emerging survey knowledge in the behavioral data from 11 participants, proved successful. Neuroimaging data revealed increasing activation across sessions only in bilateral retrosplenial cortices, thus paralleling behavioral measures of map expertise. In contrast, hippocampal activation did not follow absolute performance but rather reflected the amount of knowledge acquired in a given session. In other words, hippocampal activation was most prominent during the initial learning phase and decayed after performance had approached ceiling level. We therefore conclude that, during navigational learning, retrosplenial areas mainly serve to integrate egocentric spatial information with cues about self-motion, whereas the hippocampus is needed to incorporate new information into an emerging memory representation.

The egocentric reference deviation of neglect patients is influenced by visuospatial attention

The right deviation of the subjective straight-ahead (SSA), representing a deviation of the body centered spatial reference frame (egocentric reference), is a frequent phenomenon in spatial neglect. Little is known about the influence of visuo-spatial attention on this SSA shift. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of eye direction (overt attention) and perception of the visual background (covert attention) on the SSA pointing. We included 12 patients with right hemisphere stroke. Six were classified as neglect (N+) and compared to the six non neglect (N-) patients and 19 normal control subjects (C). They had to point straight-ahead (right hand) on an horizontal board. Pointing was performed in the light or in darkness, first with spontaneous eye direction, then while fixating a visual target (-15 degrees , 0 degrees , +15 degrees ). A first ANOVA of factors group, eye direction (left, center, right fixation) and visual context (light, darkness) showed a right SSA deviation in N+ patients only, which was more severe in the light than in darkness. In this group, the SSA was shifted in the same direction as the target, while that of N- and C groups was mildly shifted in the opposite direction. The comparison of spontaneous and central fixation conditions also showed an eye direction by group interaction, as the spontaneous right SSA deviation was reduced by central fixation in N+ patients only. These results suggest that, in neglect patients, the egocentric reference deviation is not a fixed phenomenon, and that it can be influenced by manipulation of both overt and covert spatial attention.

Processing of auditory spatial cues in human cortex: An fMRI study

The issue of where in the human cortex coding of sound location is represented still is a matter of debate. It is unclear whether there are cortical areas that are specifically activated depending on the location of sound. Are identical or distinct cortical areas in one hemisphere involved in processing of sounds from the left and right? Also, the possibility has not been investigated so far that distinct areas have a preference for processing of central and eccentric sound locations. The present study focussed on these issues by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Activations evoked by left, right and central sounds were analysed separately, and contrasts were computed between these conditions. We did not find areas, which were involved in the processing of exclusively left, right or central sound positions. Large overlapping areas rather were observed for the three sound stimuli, located in the temporal, parietal and frontal cortices of both hemispheres. This result argues for the idea of a widely distributed bilateral network accessing an internal representation of the body to encode stimulus position in relation to the body median plane. However, two areas (right BA 40 and left BA 37) also were found to have preferences for sound position. In particular, BA 40 turned out to be significantly more activated by processing central positions, compared to eccentric stimuli. In line with previous findings on visual perception, the latter observation supports the assumption that the right inferior parietal cortex may be preferentially involved in the perception of central stimulus positions in relation to the body.

Self-referential reflective activity and its relationship with rest: a PET study

This study used positron emission tomography (PET) to identify the brain substrate of self-referential reflective activity and to investigate its relationship with brain areas that are active during the resting state. Thirteen healthy volunteers performed reflective tasks pertaining to three different matters (the self, another person, and social issues) while they were scanned. Rest scans were also acquired, in which subjects were asked to simply relax and not think in a systematic way. The mental activity experienced during each scan was assessed with rating scales. The results showed that, although self-referential thoughts were most frequent during the self-referential task, some self-referential reflective activity also occurred during rest. Compared to rest, performing the reflective tasks was associated with increased blood flow in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, the left anterior middle temporal gyrus, the temporal pole bilaterally, and the right cerebellum; there was a decrease of blood flow in right prefrontal regions and in medial and right lateral parietal regions. In addition, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) (1) was more active during the self-referential reflective task than during the other two reflective tasks, (2) showed common activation during rest and the self-referential task, and (3) showed a correlation between cerebral metabolism and the amount of self-referential processing. It is suggested that the VMPFC is crucial for representing knowledge pertaining to the self and that this is an important function of the resting state.

Neural foundations of emerging route knowledge in complex spatial environments

Behavioral evidence suggests that spatial knowledge derived from ground-level navigation can consist of both route and survey knowledge. Neuroimaging and lesion studies aiming to identify the neural structures responsible for topographical learning in humans have yielded partially inconsistent results, probably due to the lack of an effective behavioral parameter allowing for a reliable distinction between different representations. Therefore, we employed a novel virtual reality environment that provides accuracy and reaction time measures precisely indicating the emergence of route vs. survey knowledge. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to localize brain regions involved in the acquisition of pure route knowledge in the form of associations between consecutive landmark views and the direction of intermediate movements. Participants were scanned during repeated encoding of the complex environment from a first-person, ground-level perspective. Behavioral data revealed emerging route knowledge in 11 out of 14 subjects. Overall comparisons between encoding and control conditions identified activation in medial frontal gyrus, retrosplenial cortex and posterior inferior parietal cortex. Most importantly, only posterior inferior parietal regions showed increasing activation across sessions, thus paralleling behavioral measures of route expertise. Given the established role of the posterior parietal cortex in spatial processing, this area is thought to provide the pivotal spatial link between two landmarks encountered in immediate temporal succession.

The sensorimotor transformation of cross-modal spatial information in the anterior intraparietal sulcus as revealed by functional MRI

The parietal cortex in monkeys and humans has been shown to play an important role in the transformation of sensory information to motor commands. However, it is still unclear whether in humans, these areas are divided functionally into subregions based on different combinations of sensory and motor modalities. To identify subregions in the parietal cortex involved in the sensorimotor information transformation between different modalities, functional MRI was used to examine brain areas activated during tasks requiring different sensorimotor transformations--i.e., various combinations of eye (saccade) or finger movements triggered by visual or somatosensory cues. We then compared the activations between cross-modal conditions (eye movements triggered by somatosensory cues and finger movements triggered by visual cues) and intramodal (eye movements triggered by visual cues and finger movements triggered by somatosensory cues) conditions. Although the parietal cortex was involved in all tasks regardless of sensorimotor combinations, the only region activated to a greater degree in the cross-modal conditions compared to the intramodal conditions was the anterior portion of the intraparietal sulcus (a-IPS). The results suggest that the a-IPS plays an important role in the sensorimotor transformation of cross-modal spatial information.

Reference Frames for Spatial Cognition: Different Brain Areas are Involved in Viewer-, Object-, and Landmark-Centered Judgments About Object Location

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare the neural correlates of three different types of spatial coding, which are implicated in crucial cognitive functions of our everyday life, such as visuomotor coordination and orientation in topographical space. By manipulating the requested spatial reference during a task of relative distance estimation, we directly compared viewer-centered, object-centered, and landmark-centered spatial coding of the same realistic 3-D information. Common activation was found in bilateral parietal, occipital, and right frontal premotor regions.

The retrosplenial and ventromedial occipital–temporal cortex (and parts of the parietal and occipital cortex) were significantly more activated during the landmark-centered condition. The ventrolateral occipital–temporal cortex was particularly involved in object-centered coding. Results strongly demonstrate that viewer-centered (egocentric) coding is restricted to the dorsal stream and connected frontal regions, whereas a coding centered on external references requires both dorsal and ventral regions, depending on the reference being a movable object or a landmark.

Self-representation: searching for a neural signature of self-consciousness

Human self-consciousness operates at different levels of complexity and at least comprises five different levels of representational processes. These five levels are nonconceptual representation, conceptual representation, sentential representation, meta-representation, and iterative meta-representation. These different levels of representation can be operationalized by taking a first-person-perspective that is involved in representational processes on different levels of complexity. We refer to experiments that operationalize a first-person-perspective on the level of conceptual and meta-representational self-consciousness. Interestingly, these experiments show converging evidence for a recruitment of medial cortical and parietal regions during taking a first-person-perspective, even when operating on different degrees of complexity. These data lend support for the speculative hypothesis, that there exist a neural signature for human self-consciousness that is recruited independent from the degree of representational complexity to be performed.

Postural stability in children with autism spectrum disorder

Maintaining upright posture is a complex process involving multiple afferent systems. The aim of this study was to measure the postural stability of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared with children with typical neurodevelopment and to measure the relative contributions of the visual, somatosensory, and vestibular afferent systems in each group. Eight boys with ASD and eight age-, race-, and gender-matched controls participated in this study using force platform technology with customized software to measure postural sway under conditions designed to eliminate or modify visual and somatosensory input. Children with ASD had significantly larger sway areas under all test conditions in which afferent input was modified. These results are consistent with a deficit in the integration of visual, vestibular, and somatosensory input to maintain postural orientation.

Neural mechanisms underlying reaching for remembered targets cued kinesthetically or visually in left or right hemispace

Reaching for a target involves integrative coordinate transformation processes between the representation of the target location, the sensorimotor information of limb of reach, and body space. Although right hemisphere dominance for visuospatial information processing is well established, corresponding right hemisphere dominance for kinesthetic spatial information processing remains to be demonstrated. We explored neural mechanisms of encoding target locations using 15O-butanol positron emission tomography (PET) in normal volunteers in a factorial experiment, where modality (visual/kinesthetic) and hemispace of target presentation (left/right of midsagittal plane) were varied systematically. After target presentation, subjects reached to the encoded target location. PET data analysis using SPM99 showed increased neural activity (P < 0.05, corrected) associated with left hemispace target presentation in right hemisphere areas (sensorimotor, anterior cingulate, insular, and temporo-occipital cortex) only. By contrast, right hemispace target presentation activated bilateral temporo-occipital cortex, which extended into the right temporo-parietal cortex and left sensorimotor cortex. A significant interaction of hemispace and modality of target presentation observed in right temporo-parietal cortex resulted from an increase in neural activity with kinesthetic target presentation in right hemispace. The data support an important role for the right temporo-parietal area in visuospatial processing and suggest a specific role of the right hemisphere in kinesthetic spatial processing.

Neural mechanisms of spatial stimulus-response compatibility: the effect of crossed-hand position

Previous psychological experiments have indicated the existence of a visual-proprioceptive interaction in spatial stimulus-response compatibility (SSRC) tasks, but there is little specific information on the neural basis of such interaction in humans. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we compared the neural activity associated with two different aspects of spatial coding: the coding of the "internal" spatial position of motor-response effectors (i.e., the position of body parts) as obtained through proprioception, and the coding of "external" positions, i.e., the positions of visual stimuli. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used to investigate the spatial compatibility (incompatible versus compatible) between a visual stimulus and hand position (crossed versus uncrossed). The subjects were instructed to respond to stimuli presented to the right or left visual field with either the ipsilateral (compatible condition) or the contralateral hand (incompatible condition). The incompatible condition produced stronger activation in the bilateral superior parietal lobule, inferior parietal lobule, and bilateral superior frontal gyrus than the compatible condition. The crossed-hand condition produced stronger activation in the bilateral precentral gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, superior parietal lobule, and superior temporal gyrus than the uncrossed-hand condition. These results suggest that activity in the frontal-parietal regions is related to two functions: (1) representation of the visual stimulus-motor response spatial configuration in an SSRC task, and (2) integration between external visual and internal proprioceptive sensory information. The activation in the superior temporal gyrus was not affected by the visual stimulus-motor response spatial configuration in an SSRC task; rather, it was affected by the crossed-hand posture. Thus, it seems to be related to representing internal proprioceptive sensory information necessary to carry out motor actions.

Body scheme gates visual processing

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore how guidance of motor acts is influenced by the visually perceived body scheme. We found that when subjects view their hand as their opposite hand, i.e., the right hand is seen as the left hand and vice versa, activation in the visual cortex was lateralized opposite to the seen hand. This demonstrates for the first time that our body scheme to which vision relates our environment is already represented at the level of visual cortex.

Neural correlates of the first-person-perspective

Human self-consciousness depends on the metarepresentation of mental and bodily states as one's own mental and bodily states. First-person-perspective taking is not sufficient, but necessary for human self-consciousness. To assign a first-person-perspective is to center one's own multimodal experiential space upon one's own body, thus operating in an egocentric reference frame. The brain regions involved in assigning first-person-perspective comprise medial prefrontal, medial parietal and lateral temporoparietal cortex. These empirical findings complement recent neurobiologically oriented theories of self-consciousness which focus on the relation between the subject and his/her environment by supplying a neural basis for its key components.

Motor and cognitive functions of the ventral premotor cortex

Recent data show that the ventral premotor cortex in both humans and monkeys has motor and cognitive functions. The cognitive functions include space perception, action understanding and imitation. The data also show a clear functional homology between monkey area F5 and human area 44. Preliminary evidence suggests that the ventral part of the lateral premotor cortex in humans may correspond to monkey area F4. A tentative map of the human lateral premotor areas founded on the reviewed evidence is presented.
