Evidence for a Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in α-RuCl_{3}

Sawtooth Torque in Anisotropic j_{eff}=1/2 Magnets: Application to α-RuCl_{3}

The so-called "Kitaev candidate" materials based on 4d^{5} and 5d^{5} metals have recently emerged as magnetic systems displaying strongly anisotropic exchange interactions reminiscent of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. Recently, these materials have been shown to commonly display a distinct sawtooth angular dependence of the magnetic torque over a wide range of magnetic fields. While higher order chiral spin interactions have been considered as a source of this observation, we show here that bilinear anisotropic interactions and/or g anisotropy are each sufficient to explain the observed torque response, which may be distinguished on the basis of high-field measurements. These findings unify the understanding of magnetic torque experiments in a variety of Kitaev candidate materials.

Nontrivial Triplon Topology and Triplon Liquid in Kitaev-Heisenberg-type Excitonic Magnets

The combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and correlations, e.g., in ruthenates and iridates, has been proposed as a means to realize quantum materials with nontrivial topological properties. We discuss here Mott insulators where on-site spin-orbit coupling favors a local J_{tot}=0 singlet ground state. We investigate excitations into a low-lying triplet, triplons, and find them to acquire nontrivial band topology in a magnetic field. We also comment on magnetic states resulting from triplon condensation, where we find, in addition to the same ordered phases known from the J_{tot}=1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg model, a triplon liquid taking the parameter space of Kitaev's spin liquid.

Vestiges of Topological Phase Transitions in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We investigate signatures of topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) between the Z_{2} quantum spin liquids (QSLs). In two spatial dimensions, Z_{2} QSLs and their TQPTs are only well defined at zero temperature (T=0), and it is imperative to clarify their observable signatures under nonzero temperatures. Here, we present the vestiges of TQPTs between Z_{2} QSLs with Majorana fermions in terms of thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} at nonzero temperatures. The κ_{xy}/T shows characteristic temperature dependences around TQPTs. We argue that an exponential upturn near T=0 and the peak of κ_{xy}/T around massive excitation energy are observable smoking-gun signals of the TQPTs. Quantum critical fan-shape temperature dependences are uncovered across TQPTs. We also perform the parton mean-field analysis on a modified Kitaev model with next-nearest neighbor interactions finding TQPTs between the phases with different Chern numbers and their vestiges self-consistently. We discuss the implication of our results to the recent experiments in α-RuCl_{3}.

Engineering Kitaev exchange in stacked iridate layers: impact of inter-layer species on in-plane magnetism

Electrostatic effects involving the inter-layer species are important: the largest Kitaev interactions comewith a more isotropic distribution of inter-layer cations around a given ligand.

Novel functionalities may be achieved in oxide electronics by appropriate stacking of planar oxide layers of different metallic species, MO_p and M′O_q. The simplest mechanism allowing the tailoring of the electronic states and physical properties of such heterostructures is of electrostatic nature—charge imbalance between the M and M′ cations. Here we clarify the effect of interlayer electrostatics on the anisotropic Kitaev exchange in H₃LiIr₂O₆, a recently proposed realization of the Kitaev spin liquid. By quantum chemical calculations, we show that the precise position of H⁺ cations between magnetically active [LiIr₂O₆]^3– honeycomb-like layers has a strong impact on the magnitude of Kitaev interactions. In particular, it is found that stacking with straight interlayer O–H–O links is detrimental to in-plane Kitaev exchange since coordination by a single H-ion of the O ligand implies an axial Coulomb potential at the O site and unfavorable polarization of the O 2p orbitals mediating the Ir–Ir interactions. Our results therefore provide valuable guidelines for the rational design of Kitaev quantum magnets, indicating unprecedented Kitaev interactions of ≈40 meV if the linear interlayer linkage is removed.

Quasi-degenerate magnetic states in α-RuCl3

Exploring quantum spin liquid (QSL) state has both fundamental scientific value and realistic application potential. Recently, α-RuCl₃ was experimentally observed to hold in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperature, which was further proposed to be proximate to a Kitaev QSL ground state. We have studied the magnetic properties of α-RuCl₃ in the framework of electronic structure calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) with Hubbard U correction (DFT+U) and spin-orbit coupling. When the intra-orbital Hubbard interaction U and the inter-orbital Hund's coupling J adopt the commonly accepted values of U = 2.0 eV and J = 0.4 eV, the zigzag AFM order indeed owns the minimum energy, consistent with the experimental observation. More importantly, we find that compared with the ferromagnetic order in the previous theoretical studies, there exist a series of magnetic configurations energetically even closer to the zigzag AFM ground state. The further calculations and analysis indicate that these low-energy magnetic states are closely related to the electronic correlation effect of Ru 4d orbitals. By decreasing U and increasing J with just about 0.2 eV, they become energetically degenerate with the zigzag AFM order, inducing strong magnetic frustration and then yielding a state without long-range magnetic order but with nonzero local moments. Considering the facts that theoretically the pressure usually reduces the intra-orbital Hubbard interaction and meanwhile enhances the inter-orbital Hund's coupling, while experimentally the pressure drives α-RuCl₃ into a quantum disordered phase, our results provide a perspective to understand the exotic magnetic behaviors of α-RuCl₃.

Antiferromagnetic spin-frustrated layers of corner-sharing Cu4 tetrahedra on the kagome lattice in volcanic minerals Cu5O2(VO4)2(CuCl), NaCu5O2(SeO3)2Cl3, and K2Cu5Cl8(OH)4·2H2O

The objective of the present work was to analyze the possibility of realization of quantum spin liquids in three volcanic minerals-averievite (Cu₅O₂(VO₄)₂(CuCl)), ilinskite (NaCu₅O₂(SeO₃)₂Cl₃), and avdononite (K₂Cu₅Cl₈(OH)₄·2H₂O)-from the crystal chemistry point of view. Based on the structural data, the sign and strength of magnetic interactions have been calculated and the geometric frustrations serving as the main reason of the existence of spin liquids have been investigated. According to our calculations, the magnetic structures of averievite and ilinskite are composed of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-frustrated layers of corner-sharing Cu₄ tetrahedra on the kagome lattice. However, the direction of nonshared corners of tetrahedra is different in them. The oxygen ions centering the OCu₄ tetrahedra in averievite and ilinskite provide the main contribution to the formation of AFM interactions along the tetrahedra edges. The local electric polarization in averievite and the possibility of spin configuration fluctuations due to vibrations of tetrahedra-centering oxygen ions have been discussed. The existence of structural phase transitions accompanied with magnetic transitions was assumed in ilinskite because of the effect of a lone electron pair by Se⁴⁺ ions. As was demonstrated through comparison of averievite and avdoninite, at the removal of centering oxygen ions from tetrahedra, the magnetic structure of the pyrochlore layer present in averievite transformed into an openwork curled net with large cells woven from corner-sharing open AFM spin-frustrated tetrahedra ('butterflies') in avdoninite.

Resonant torsion magnetometry in anisotropic quantum materials

Unusual behavior in quantum materials commonly arises from their effective low-dimensional physics, reflecting the underlying anisotropy in the spin and charge degrees of freedom. Here we introduce the magnetotropic coefficient k = ∂²F/∂θ², the second derivative of the free energy F with respect to the magnetic field orientation θ in the crystal. We show that the magnetotropic coefficient can be quantitatively determined from a shift in the resonant frequency of a commercially available atomic force microscopy cantilever under magnetic field. This detection method enables part per 100 million sensitivity and the ability to measure magnetic anisotropy in nanogram-scale samples, as demonstrated on the Weyl semimetal NbP. Measurement of the magnetotropic coefficient in the spin-liquid candidate RuCl₃ highlights its sensitivity to anisotropic phase transitions and allows a quantitative comparison to other thermodynamic coefficients via the Ehrenfest relations.

Uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure effects in α-RuCl3 single crystals via thermal-expansion measurements

We present high-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements of single crystalline α-RuCl₃. An extremely hysteretic structural transition expanding over 100 K is observed by thermal-expansion along both crystallographic axes, which we attribute to a change of stacking sequence of the RuCl₃ layers. Three magnetic transitions are observed, which we link to the different stacking sequences. Using our data and thermodynamic relations, we derive the uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure derivatives of all three magnetic transitions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic order of the major transition at  ∼7 K should be totally suppressed by very moderate pressures of 0.3 GPa. Finally, we discuss why our results differ from recent hydrostatic pressure measurements and suggest a possible route to reaching the spin-liquid state in α-RuCl₃.

Electrical Transport Signature of the Magnetic Fluctuation-Structure Relation in α-RuCl3 Nanoflakes

The small gap semiconductor α-RuCl₃ has emerged as a promising candidate for quantum spin liquid materials. Thus far, Raman spectroscopy, neutron scattering, and magnetization measurements have provided valuable hints for collective spin behavior in α-RuCl₃ bulk crystals. However, the goal of implementing α-RuCl₃ into spintronic devices would strongly benefit from the possibility of electrically probing these phenomena. To address this, we first investigated nanoflakes of α-RuCl₃ by Raman spectroscopy and observed similar behavior as in the case of the bulk material, including the signatures of possible fractionalized excitations. In complementary experiments, we investigated the electrical charge transport properties of individual α-RuCl₃ nanoflakes in the temperature range between 120 and 290 K. The observed temperature-dependent electrical resistivity is consistent with variable range hopping behavior and exhibits a transition at about 180 K, close to the onset temperature observed in our Raman measurements. In conjunction with the established relation between structure and magnetism in the bulk, we interpret this transition to coincide with the emergence of fractionalized excitations due to the Kitaev interactions in the nanoflakes. Compared to the bulk samples, the transition temperature of the underlying structural change is larger in the nanoflakes. This difference is tentatively attributed to the dimensionality of the nanoflakes as well as the formation of stacking faults during mechanical exfoliation. The demonstrated devices open up novel perspectives toward manipulating the Kitaev-phase in α-RuCl₃ via electrical means.

Dirac and Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids on the Honeycomb Lattice in a Magnetic Field

Motivated by recent experimental observations in α-RuCl_{3}, we study the K-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field. By a slave-particle representation and variational Monte Carlo calculations, we reproduce the phase transition from zigzag magnetic order to a field-induced disordered phase. The nature of this state depends crucially on the field orientation. For particular field directions in the honeycomb plane, we find a gapless Dirac spin liquid, in agreement with recent experiments on α-RuCl_{3}. For a range of out-of-plane fields, we predict the existence of a Kalmeyer-Laughlin-type chiral spin liquid, which would show an integer-quantized thermal Hall effect.

Unusual Phonon Heat Transport in α-RuCl_{3}: Strong Spin-Phonon Scattering and Field-Induced Spin Gap

The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. Here we unveil the highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity κ of α-RuCl_{3}, a prime candidate for realizing such physics: beyond a magnetic field of B_{c}≈7.5  T, κ increases by about one order of magnitude, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field dependence unambiguously to be the result of severe scattering of phonons off putative Kitaev-Heisenberg excitations in combination with a drastic field-induced change of the magnetic excitation spectrum. In particular, an unexpected, large energy gap arises, which increases linearly with the magnetic field, reaching remarkable ℏω_{0}/k_{B}≈50  K at 18 T.

Ultralow-Temperature Thermal Conductivity of the Kitaev Honeycomb Magnet α-RuCl_{3} across the Field-Induced Phase Transition

Recently, there have been increasingly hot debates on whether there exists a quantum spin liquid in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet α-RuCl_{3} in a high magnetic field. To investigate this issue, we perform ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of α-RuCl_{3} down to 80 mK and up to 9 T. Our experiments clearly show a field-induced phase transition occurring at μ_{0}H_{c}≈7.5  T, above which the magnetic order is completely suppressed. The minimum of thermal conductivity at 7.5 T is attributed to the strong scattering of phonons by magnetic fluctuations. Most importantly, above 7.5 T, we do not observe any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from gapless magnetic excitations, which puts a strong constraint on the nature of the high-field phase of α-RuCl_{3}.

Ordered states in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From 1D chains to 2D honeycomb

We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg (J = cosϕ) and Kitaev (K = sinϕ) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-z, ferromagnetic-xy, staggered-xy, Néel-z, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-xy. The two Kitaev points [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are singular. The ϕ-dependent phase diagram is similar to that for the 2D honeycomb-lattice KH model. Remarkably, all the ordered states of the honeycomb-lattice KH model can be interpreted in terms of the coupled KH chains. We also discuss the magnetic structure of the K-intercalated RuCl3, a potential Kitaev material, in the framework of the 1D KH model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low-lying excitations of the 1D KH Hamiltonian can be explained within the combination of the known six-vertex model and spin-wave theory.

van der Waals Layered Materials: Opportunities and Challenges

Since graphene became available by a scotch tape technique, a vast class of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) layered materials has been researched intensively. What is more intriguing is that the well-known physics and chemistry of three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials are often irrelevant, revealing exotic phenomena in 2D vdW materials. By further constructing heterostructures of these materials in the planar and vertical directions, which can be easily achieved via simple exfoliation techniques, numerous quantum mechanical devices have been demonstrated for fundamental research and technological applications. It is, therefore, necessary to review the special features in 2D vdW materials and to discuss the remaining issues and challenges. Here, we review the vdW materials library, technology relevance, and specialties of vdW materials covering the vdW interaction, strong Coulomb interaction, layer dependence, dielectric screening engineering, work function modulation, phase engineering, heterostructures, stability, growth issues, and the remaining challenges.

Models and materials for generalized Kitaev magnetism

The exactly solvable Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice has recently received enormous attention linked to the hope of achieving novel spin-liquid states with fractionalized Majorana-like excitations. In this review, we analyze the mechanism proposed by Jackeli and Khaliullin to identify Kitaev materials based on spin-orbital dependent bond interactions and provide a comprehensive overview of its implications in real materials. We set the focus on experimental results and current theoretical understanding of planar honeycomb systems (Na₂IrO₃, α-Li₂IrO₃, and α-RuCl₃), three-dimensional Kitaev materials (β- and γ-Li₂IrO₃), and other potential candidates, completing the review with the list of open questions awaiting new insights.

Gapless Spin Excitations in the Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid Phase of α-RuCl_{3}

α-RuCl_{3} is a leading candidate material for the observation of physics related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). By combined susceptibility, specific-heat, and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements, we demonstrate that α-RuCl_{3} undergoes a quantum phase transition to a QSL in a magnetic field of 7.5 T applied in the ab plane. We show further that this high-field QSL phase has gapless spin excitations over a field range up to 16 T. This highly unconventional result, unknown in either Heisenberg or Kitaev magnets, offers insight essential to establishing the physics of α-RuCl_{3}.

Antiferromagnetic Resonance and Terahertz Continuum in α-RuCl_{3}

We report measurements of optical absorption in the zigzag antiferromagnet α-RuCl_{3} as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B, and photon energy ℏω in the range ∼0.3-8.3 meV, using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. Polarized measurements show that threefold rotational symmetry is broken in the honeycomb plane from 2 to 300 K. We find a sharp absorption peak at 2.56 meV upon cooling below the Néel temperature of 7 K at B=0 that we identify as the magnetic-dipole excitation of a zero-wave-vector magnon, or antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). With the application of B, the AFMR broadens and shifts to a lower frequency as long-range magnetic order is lost in a manner consistent with transitioning to a spin-disordered phase. From a direct, internally calibrated measurement of the AFMR spectral weight, we place an upper bound on the contribution to the dc susceptibility from a magnetic excitation continuum.

Magnetic Excitations and Continuum of a Possibly Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in α-RuCl_{3}

We report on terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in α-RuCl_{3}, a system proximate to the Kitaev honeycomb model, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We follow the evolution of an extended magnetic continuum below the structural phase transition at T_{s2}=62  K. With the onset of a long-range magnetic order at T_{N}=6.5  K, spectral weight is transferred to a well-defined magnetic excitation at ℏω_{1}=2.48  meV, which is accompanied by a higher-energy band at ℏω_{2}=6.48  meV. Both excitations soften in a magnetic field, signaling a quantum phase transition close to B_{c}=7  T, where a broad continuum dominates the dynamical response. Above B_{c}, the long-range order is suppressed, and on top of the continuum, emergent magnetic excitations evolve. These excitations follow clear selection rules and exhibit distinct field dependencies, characterizing the dynamical properties of a possibly field-induced quantum spin liquid.

Correlated states in β-Li2IrO3 driven by applied magnetic fields

Magnetic honeycomb iridates are thought to show strongly spin-anisotropic exchange interactions which, when highly frustrated, lead to an exotic state of matter known as the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, in all known examples these materials magnetically order at finite temperatures, the scale of which may imply weak frustration. Here we show that the application of a relatively small magnetic field drives the three-dimensional magnet β-Li₂IrO₃ from its incommensurate ground state into a quantum correlated paramagnet. Interestingly, this paramagnetic state admixes a zig-zag spin mode analogous to the zig-zag order seen in other Mott-Kitaev compounds. The rapid onset of the field-induced correlated state implies the exchange interactions are delicately balanced, leading to strong frustration and a near degeneracy of different ground states.

Materials with a Kitaev spin liquid ground state are sought after as models of quantum phases but candidates so far form either zig-zag or incommensurate magnetic order. Ruiz et al. find a crossover between these states in β-Li₂IrO₃ under weak magnetic fields, indicating strongly frustrated spin interactions.

Robust spin correlations at high magnetic fields in the harmonic honeycomb iridates

The complex antiferromagnetic orders observed in the honeycomb iridates are a double-edged sword in the search for a quantum spin-liquid: both attesting that the magnetic interactions provide many of the necessary ingredients, while simultaneously impeding access. Focus has naturally been drawn to the unusual magnetic orders that hint at the underlying spin correlations. However, the study of any particular broken symmetry state generally provides little clue about the possibility of other nearby ground states. Here we use magnetic fields approaching 100 Tesla to reveal the extent of the spin correlations in γ-lithium iridate. We find that a small component of field along the magnetic easy-axis melts long-range order, revealing a bistable, strongly correlated spin state. Far from the usual destruction of antiferromagnetism via spin polarization, the high-field state possesses only a small fraction of the total iridium moment, without evidence for long-range order up to the highest attainable magnetic fields.The complex antiferromagnetic orders observed in the honeycomb iridates prevent access to a spin-liquid ground state. Here the authors apply extremely high magnetic fields to destroy the antiferromagnetic order in γ-lithium iridate and reveal a bistable, strongly correlated spin state.
