Abstract
Among the extensive public and scientific interest in the use of phytochemicals to prevent or treat human diseases in recent years, natural compounds have been highly investigated to elucidate their therapeutic effect on chronic human diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disease. Curcumin, an active principle of the perennial herb Curcuma longa, has attracted an increasing research interest over the last half-century due to its diversity of molecular targets, including transcription factors, enzymes, protein kinases, growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, receptors, and it's interesting pharmacological activities. Despite that, the clinical effectiveness of the native curcumin is weak, owing to its low bioavailability and rapid metabolism. Preclinical data obtained from animal models and phase I clinical studies done in human volunteers confirmed a small amount of intestinal absorption, hepatic first pass effect, and some degree of intestinal metabolism, might explain its poor systemic availability when it is given via the oral route. During the last decade, researchers have attempted with new pharmaceutical methods such as nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles, solid dispersions, emulsions, and microspheres to improve the bioavailability of curcumin. As a result, a significant number of bioavailable curcumin-based formulations were introduced with a varying range of enhanced bioavailability. This manuscript critically reviews the available scientific evidence on the basic and clinical effects and molecular targets of curcumin. We also discuss its pharmacokinetic and problems for marketing curcumin as a drug.

Abstract
Monoterpenes present in the essential oils exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we investigated the preventive effect of alpha-pinene (AP), a monoterpene, against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction and inflammation in Wistar rats. Male Wistar rats were pretreated with AP (50 mg/kg body weight (bw)) administration for 21 days and ISO (85 mg/kg bw) was administered subcutaneously for last two consecutive days (20th day and 21st day). We noticed that there was an increased activity of cardiac marker enzymes in ISO-treated rats. We also observed that elevated levels of lipid peroxidative indices decreased activities of antioxidant status in plasma, erythrocyte, and heart tissue in ISO-induced rats. Furthermore, ISO-treated rats showed an increase in the levels of inflammatory mediators like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the serum. Besides, we confirmed the upregulated expression of TNF-α, IL-6, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells in ISO-induced rat heart tissue. Conversely, we found that AP pretreatment significantly decreased levels of cardiac markers like serum cardiac troponin T and cardiac troponin I, lipid peroxidative markers, and restored antioxidants status in ISO-treated rats. Besides, AP administration attenuated ISO-induced inflammatory marker expression. The present findings demonstrated that AP significantly protects the myocardium and exerts cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in experimental rats.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the foremost causes of high morbidity and mortality globally. Preventive, diagnostic, and treatment measures available for CVDs are not very useful, which demands promising alternative methods. Nanoscience and nanotechnology open a new window in the area of CVDs with an opportunity to achieve effective treatment, better prognosis, and less adverse effects on non-target tissues. The application of nanoparticles and nanocarriers in the area of cardiology has gathered much attention due to the properties such as passive and active targeting to the cardiac tissues, improved target specificity, and sensitivity. It has reported that more than 50% of CVDs can be treated effectively through the use of nanotechnology. The main goal of this review is to explore the recent advancements in nanoparticle-based cardiovascular drug carriers. This review also summarizes the difficulties associated with the conventional treatment modalities in comparison to the nanomedicine for CVDs.

Abstract
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes that present a metallic element in their structure. These enzymes are ubiquitously distributed and function as extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelers. MMPs play a broad role in cardiovascular biology regulating processes such as cell adhesion and function, cellular communication and differentiation, integration of mechanical force and force transmission, tissue remodeling, modulation of damaged-tissue structural integrity, cellular survival or apoptosis and regulation of inflammation-related cytokines and growth factors. MMPs inhibition and downregulation are correlated with minimization of cardiac damage, i.e., Chinese herbal medicine has shown to stabilize abdominal aorta aneurysm due to its antiinflammatory, antioxidant and MMP-2 and 9 inhibitory properties. Thus phyto-derived products rise as promising sources for novel therapies focusing on MMPs inhibition and downregulation to treat or prevent cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Natural mofettes are gases resulting from post-volcanic emanations. This study aimed to examine the effect of mofette therapy on plasma oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters in rats after experimental induction of myocardial ischemia, as well as on structural changes in myocardial tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS White Wistar-Bratislava rats were divided into three groups. In groups 2 and 3, myocardial ischemia was induced by isoproterenol. Rats in group 3 were additionally exposed to high levels mofettes. Oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters were determined in plasma. The structural changes of the myocardium were observed in paraffin embedded slices contrasted using Goldner's trichrome staining. RESULTS A statistically significant change in serum oxidative stress biomarkers, including nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, as well as in the tested antioxidant molecules and total antioxidant capacity were observed in group 3 compared to group 2. Also, rats of group 3 showed an obvious improvement in inflammatory infiltration and repair of necrotic areas through collagen proliferation (proliferation of fibrous connective tissue) compared to group 2. CONCLUSION Mofette had a beneficial effect on the balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant status following experimentally induced myocardial ischemia.

Abstract
Curcumin is a naturally occurring nutraceutical compound with a number of therapeutic and biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antitumor, and cardioprotective. This plant-derived chemical has demonstrated great potential in targeting various signaling pathways to exert its protective effects. Signal transducers and activator of transcription (STAT) is one of the molecular pathways involved in a variety of biological processes such as cell proliferation and cell apoptosis. Accumulating data demonstrates that the STAT pathway is an important target in treatment of a number of disorders, particularly cancer. Curcumin is capable of affecting STAT signaling pathway in induction of its therapeutic impacts. Curcumin is able to enhance the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines and improve inflammatory disorders such as colitis by targeting STAT signaling pathway. Furthermore, studies show that inhibition of JAK/STAT pathway by curcumin is involved in reduced migration and invasion of cancer cells. Curcumin normalizes the expression of JAK/STAT signaling pathway to exert anti-diabetic, renoprotective, and neuroprotective impacts. At the present review, we provide a comprehensive discussion about the effect of curcumin on JAK/STAT signaling pathway to direct further studies in this field.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) compromises a group of heart and blood vessels disorders with high impact on human health and wellbeing. Curcumin (CUR) have demonstrated beneficial effects on these group of diseases that represent a global burden with a prevalence that continues increasing progressively. Pre- and clinical studies have demonstrated the CUR effects in CVD through its anti-hypercholesterolemic and anti-atherosclerotic effects and its protective properties against cardiac ischemia and reperfusion. However, the CUR therapeutic limitation is its bioavailability. New CUR nanomedicine formulations are developed to solve this problem. The present article aims to discuss different studies and approaches looking into the promising role of nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems to deliver CUR and its derivatives in CVD treatment, with an emphasis on their formulation properties, experimental evidence, bioactivity, as well as challenges and opportunities in developing these systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The hepatoprotective role of various molecules in drug-induced hepatotoxicity arouses great interest. We investigated the effect of liposomal curcumin (LCC) on experimental acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rats were randomly allocated into 5 groups, and the effect of two LCC concentrations was studied: group 1 - 1 ml intraperitoneal (i.p.) saline, group 2 - APAP pretreatment, group 3 - APAP+silymarin (extract of the silybum marianum with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties), group 4 - APAP+LCC1, group 5 - APAP+LCC2. The biomarkers of oxidative stress (nitric oxide and malondialdehyde) and antioxidant status of plasma (thiols and catalase), TNF-α, MMP-2 and MMP-9 serum levels were evaluated. RESULTS An improvement in oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and TNF-α, MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels was obtained in groups pretreated with LCC compared to silymarin treatment, in a dose-dependent manner. Histopathological examination reinforced the results. CONCLUSION Liposomal curcumin improves the oxidative stress/antioxidant balance and alleviates inflammation in experimental APAP-induced hepatotoxicity.

Abstract
Purpose Oxaliplatin (OXA)-induced liver injury is one of the main limiting factors affecting the efficacy of OXA-based chemotherapy in patients with colorectal liver metastases. In addition, oxidative stress is an important pathophysiological mechanism of OXA-induced liver injury. Therefore, dietary antioxidants may decrease or prevent hepatic toxicity in vivo and be beneficial to OXA-based chemotherapy. Methods An experimental OXA-induced liver injury animal model was established, and the protective effects of curcumin (CUR) against OXA-induced liver injury were investigated. ELISA was used to determine the levels of MDA, SOD, CAT, and GSH in liver tissue. The effect of CUR treatment on the expression of cytokines and the Nrf2 pathway was determined by real-time PCR and Western blotting. Results CUR treatment alleviated OXA-induced hepatic pathological damage and splenomegaly. The protective effect of CUR was demonstrated to be correlated with inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammation, and the coagulation system. Furthermore, Western blotting revealed that CUR treatment reverses the suppression of Nrf2 nuclear translocation and increases the expression of HO-1 and NOQ1 in mice with OXA-induced liver injury. Moreover, the Nrf2 activation and hepatoprotective effect of CUR were abolished by brusatol. Conclusion Curcumin attenuates oxaliplatin-induced liver injury and oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2 pathway, which suggests that CUR may be potentially used in the prevention and treatment of OXA-induced liver injury.

Abstract
Dietary phytochemicals are considered an innovative strategy that helps to reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Some phytochemicals have been shown to play a beneficial role in lipid metabolism, to improve endothelial function and to modify oxidative stress pathways in experimental and clinical models of cardiovascular impairment. Importantly, investigation on phytochemical effect on cardiac remodeling appears to be promising. Nowadays, drug therapy and implantation of devices have demonstrated to ameliorate survival. Of interest, sex-gender seems to influence the response to HF canonical therapies. In fact, starting by the evidence of the feminization of world population and the scarce efficacy and safety of the traditional drugs in women, the search of alternative therapeutic tools has become mandatory. The aim of this review is to summarize the possible role of dietary phytochemicals in HF therapy and the evidence of a different sex-gender-oriented response.

Abstract
Galangin (GA) is an active flavonoid of the rhizome of Alpinia galanga that belongs to the ginger family. GA exhibit potent anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, we evaluated the preventive effects of GA against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced inflammation and myocardial fibrosis in male albino Wistar rats. We found that GA (1 mg/kg b.wt.) pretreatment attenuated the ISO-mediated (5 mg/kg b.wt. for 14 consecutive days) elevation of heart rate, activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-MB (CKMB) in the rat serum. We also noticed that GA prevented the ISO-mediated cardiac markers i.e. cardiac troponin T and I (cTnT and cTnI) expression in the serum of rats. Further, GA pretreatment prevented ISO-mediated lipid peroxidation and diminished blood pressure and loss of antioxidants status in the heart tissue of ISO treated rats. In addition, GA treatment modulates ISO-induced alterations the expressions of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1), p-AKT, glycogen synthase kinase-3β (p-GSK-3β) and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) in the heart tissue. Furthermore, molecular analysis (PCR array and western blot) revealed that GA pretreatment prevented inflammation and fibrosis related gene expression pattern in ISO-induced rats. Taken together, the results indicate the cardioprotective effect of GA against ISO-induced inflammation and fibrosis. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of GA could be considered for its cardioprotective effect in the ISO-treated rats.

Abstract
Demographic data record an increasing number of people aged over 65 years, with specific health conditions and a high probability to suffer from chronic diseases, cognitive impairment or loss of autonomy, and with limited functional reserve. The prevalence of disability increases with age, affecting 33% of men and 42% of women aged over 85 years. Many neurodegenerative disorders increase in prevalence with age. Thus, the need for rehabilitation treatment in this segment of population is very high, loss of functioning being the most prominent condition for admitting elderly persons in rehabilitation facilities. Rehabilitation in the elderly is an important tool in regaining autonomy, associated with substantial reduction in the burden of health and social costs. Patients aged over 80 years need a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) to establish the global capabilities of the person for inclusion in a coordinated therapy plan and a long term follow-up. CGA will identify patients with severe or complicated medical conditions and important disability who require a multidisciplinary team and a coordinated rehabilitation program, accessible only in rehabilitation hospitals. Rehabilitation treatment should start from the intensive care unit, and continues until the patient reaches a plateau of maximal functional improvement. The most useful therapeutic interventions in old people are physical and occupational therapy, and, for selected and stable patients, therapy in a balnear resort is an option to improve their quality of life.

Abstract
Purpose Anti-inflammatory proprieties of curcumin were proved to be useful in various diseases, including diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory comparative effect of curcumin solution with liposomal curcumin formula, regarding the improvement of serum levels of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha), IL-6 (interleukin), IL-1α, IL-1β, MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) and RANTES in experimental diabetes, induced by streptozotocin (STZ), in rats. Materials and methods Six groups of 7 rats were investigated regarding the effect of i.p. (intraperitoneal) administration of two concentrations of curcumin solution (CC1 and CC2) and two concentrations of liposomal curcumin (LCC1 and LCC2): group 1 – control group with i.p. administration of 1 mL saline solution, group 2 – i.p. STZ administration (60mg/kg bw, bw=body weight), group 3 – STZ+CC1 administration, group 4 – STZ+CC2 administration, group 5 – STZ+ LCC1 administration and group 6 – STZ+ LCC2 administration. The concentrations of curcumin formulas were 1 mg/0.1 kg bw for CC1 and LCC1 and 2 mg/0.1 kg bw for CC2 and LCC2, respectively. Serum levels of C-peptide (as an indicator of pancreatic function) and TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1α, IL-1β, MCP-1, and RANTES (as biomarkers for systemic inflammation) were assessed for each group. Results The plasma level of C-peptide showed significant improvements when LCC was administrated, with better results for LCC2 when compared to LCC1 (P<0.003). LCC2 pretreatment proved to be more efficient in reducing the level of TNF-α (P<0.003) and RANTES (P<0.003) than CC2 pretreatment. Upon comparing LCC2 with LCC1 formulas, the differences were significant for TNF-α (P=0.004), IL-1β (P=0.022), and RANTES (P=0.003) levels. Conclusion Liposomal curcumin in a dose of 2 mg/0.1 kg bw proved to have an optimum therapeutic effect as a pretreatment in DM induced by STZ. This result can constitute a base for clinical studies for curcumin efficiency as adjuvant therapy in type 1 DM.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of ultrasound-assisted thermo-alkali modification on the molecular structure of peanut protein. Further, the preparation conditions involved in embedding curcumin by the modified pea protein were also studied. It was found that within the pH range of 7 < pH < 11, with an increase in pH, the content of free sulfhydryl group in peanut protein isolate gradually increased from 10.35 ± 0.63 μmol/g (pH = 7) to 18.26 ± 0.93 μmol/g (pH = 10); and the content of disulfide bonds decreased from 44.62 ± 0.48 μmol/g (pH = 7) to 34.26 ± 2.03 μmol/g (pH = 11). In the ultrasonic power range (P < 300 W), with an increase in power, the content of free mercapto group in peanut protein isolate gradually increased from 12.44 ± 0.73 μmol/g to 19.46 ± 0.24 μmol/g (P = 250 W); and the content of disulfide bonds decreased from 42.29 ± 1.24 μmol/g to 33.28 ± 0.64 μmol/g (P = 300 W). Within the temperature range of 70 °C < T < 90 °C, with an increase in temperature, the content of free sulfhydryl group in peanut protein isolate gradually increased from 10.35 ± 0.94 μmol/g (T = 70 °C) to 19.67 ± 0.68 μmol/g (T = 90 °C), and the content of disulfide bonds decreased from 45.02 ± 2.84 μmol/g (T = 70 °C) to 34.26 ± 2.03 μmol/g (T = 90 °C). Response surface test was used to optimize the preparation conditions of nanoparticles from curcumin. The results showed that the optimum parameters of ultrasonic-assisted modification of peanut protein embedding curcumin were pH = 9.8, heating temperature T = 90 °C, ultrasonic power Q = 225 W, and heating time S = 21 min. Under these conditions, the embedding rate of curcumin reached 83.27 + 1.06%, the ABTS+ scavenging activity generally decreases with time over the 2 days period measured in PPI solution and PPI nanoparticles (PPN), the ABTS+ scavenging activity decreased from 40.8%, 52.2% and 67.3% to 27.1%, 39.0% and 60.5%, respectively. Compared with pure curcumin, the antioxidant activity was increased at presence of PPI.

Abstract
We have investigated the cardio-protective effects of pretreatment with curcumin nanoparticles (CUN) compared to conventional curcumin (CUS) on the changes in oxidative stress parameters and inflammatory cytokine levels during induced acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in rats with diabetes mellitus (DM). DM was induced with streptozotocin, and AMI with isoproterenol. Eight groups of seven Wister Bratislava rats were included in the study. The N-C was the normal control group, AMI-C was the group with AMI, DM-C was the group with DM, and DM-AMI-C was the group with DM and AMI. All four groups received saline solution orally during the whole experiment. S-DM-CUS-AMI and S-DM-CUN-AMI groups received saline for seven days prior to DM induction and continued with CUS (200 mg/kg bw, bw = body weight) for S-DM-CUS-AMI and CUN for S-DM-CUN-AMI (200 mg/kg bw) for 15 days before AMI induction. The CUS-DM-CUS-AMI group received CUS (200 mg/kg bw), while the CUN-DM-CUN-AMI received CUN (200 mg/kg bw) for seven days prior to DM induction, and both groups continued with administration in the same doses for 15 days before AMI induction. CUS and CUN prevented elevation of creatine kinase, creatine kinase-MB, lactate dehydrogenase in all groups, with better results in the CUN (S-DM-CUN-AMI and CUN-DM-CUN-AMI groups). CUS and CUN significantly reduced serum levels of oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, the indirect assessment of nitric oxide synthesis, and total oxidative status) and enhanced antioxidative markers (total antioxidative capacity and thiols, up to 2.5 times). All groups that received CUS or CUN showed significantly lower serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β. The best antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects were obtained for the group that received CUN before DM induction (CUN-DM-CUN-AMI group). Pretreatment with CUN proved higher cardio-protective effects exerting an important antioxidative and anti-inflammatory impact in the case of AMI in DM.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the cardio-protection of syringic acid (SA) in combination with resveratrol (RV) in isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarcted (MI) rats. Methods Groups of all rats were subjected oral pre-treatment at the beginning of the study with SA (50 mg/kg), RV (50 mg/kg) and combination (COMB) of SA (25 mg/kg) and RV (25 mg/kg) along with gallic acid (GA) (50 mg/kg) for 30 days. After sacrification, homogenate of heart tissue along with serum were utilized for further biochemical investigations. The effects on creatine kinase (CK), aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) were studied in serum and heart tissues. Glutathione-s-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and reduced glutathione (GSH), membrane bound enzymes and electrolytes were tested in heart tissues. Body weights and heart weights were also observed along with high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), uric acid and total protein content (TPC) in serum. Results CK, AST, ALT and GGT levels in serum were augmented significantly while these enzymes are decreased in cardiac tissue samples of ISO-treated rats. GST, GPX, GSH, Na+/K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ ATPases, K+ ions were significantly decreased while Na+ and Ca2+ ions were increased in the heart tissues of ISO-injected rats. Loss and gain of body and heart weights were noticed significantly in rats having ISO administration. ISO group showed significant increase in hs-CRP and Uric acid while significant decrease in TPC. All of actions of ISO were ameliorated by COMB. Conclusions COMB suppressed ISO induced MI in rats and exhibited cardio-protection.

Abstract
Background: The continue efforts for long term reducing of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open angle glaucoma, focused the attention on those patients who received different therapies, other that topical drugs for IOP reduction, that can influence this parameter.. The aim of this study was to evaluate the IOP, total oxidative stress and anti-oxidant capacity of plasma before and after nicergoline therapy in patients with ischemic stroke and associated open angle glaucoma.
Material and method: a group of 35 patients with ischemic stroke and chronic open angle glaucoma (under topical beta-blockers therapy) was studied regarding the values of IOP, total oxidative stress (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) before (T1) and after 6 month (T2) of nicergoline therapy.
Results: IOP values for both eyes were significantly reduced when the values of T1 examination were compared with those of T2 assessment. The total oxidative stress parameter was also significantly reduced after nicergoline therapy together with increasing of total antioxidant capacity of plasma.
Conclusions: besides its positive effects on neuronal metabolism for ischemic stroke patients, nicergoline is able to influence the IOP in patients with open angle glaucoma and to improve the plasmatic oxidative stress/antioxidant balance. By this mechanism nicergoiline can contribute to a neuroprotection and better visual function preservation for these patients, improving their chances to neuro-motor rehabilitation and their quality of life.

Abstract
Hemorrhagic strokes (ICH) affects mainly young active people, with increasing incidence in developing countries. Mortality is high in acute phase, and patients are prone to complications related to stroke itself and to coexisting medical conditions. Patients with ICH are at high risk in developing deep venous thrombosis (DVT) with secondary pulmonary embolism (PE). Prevention of venous thrombotic events in hemorrhagic stroke patients requires intermittent pneumatic compression and preventive doses of low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) in high-risk patients. If DVT and /or PE occurs, the therapeutic management should balance the risk of recurrent cerebral bleeding and the life-threatening risk of PE, making the decision to start anticoagulation challenging. We present a case of a young patient with a large hypertensive capsulo-lenticular hemorrhage, who was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism 21 days after stroke onset. The decision was for anticoagulant treatment initial with LWMH, and switch to direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) after 10 days; strict control of vascular risk factors of the patients (hypertension, diabetes and obesity) was achieved. Rehabilitation treatment, delayed until day 21, was recommended with progressive intensity. Evolution of the patient was favorable, with complete hematoma resorbtion under DOAC treatment at 10 weeks follow-up and important motor recovery. Rehabilitation program was intensive during this interval, and strongly contributive to neurologic improvement.

Abstract
Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is an important acute disease of myocardial tissue, that occurs as a result of an imbalance between coronary blood supply and myocardial demand. Isoproterenol (ISO) is a synthetic catecholamine, a beta-adrenergic agonist that produces extensive biochemical, functional, and histological alterations in the heart, characteristic for AMI. The present study has been designed to identify the best dose of ISO that induces electrocardiogram (ECG) alterations, enzymatic reaction, and histopathological changes characteristic of AMI. Material and method: AMI was induced to Wistar-Bratislava white male rats, using three different subcutaneous doses of ISO (85 mg/kg bw, 100 mg/kg bw, and 150 mg/kg bw). ISO was administrated twice, with the second dose at 24h after the initial one. The ECGs were recorded at 24 hours after the last dose of ISO. Blood samples were collected for measurement of creatine kinase (CK), and CK-MB serum levels, and the hearts were excised and prepared for histopathologic examination. Results and discussions: All doses of ISO induced alterations in the ECG patterns such as increased heart rate and prolongation of QT and QTc intervals. Depression of the ST segment coupled with marked T wave inversion were observed at the doses of 100 mg/kg bw and 150 mg/kg bw of ISO. All doses of ISO induced an elevation of CK and CK-MB with highest levels observed for the dose of 150 mg/kg bw. Histopathologic examination revealed subendocardial AMI lesions for all doses tested. Conclusions: ISO in doses of 100 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg is useful for induction of infarct-like lesion on ECG, increased levels of myocardial necrosis enzymes and morphological changes characteristic for AMI.

Abstract
Curcumin from Curcuma longa is a nutraceutical compound reported to possess strong antioxidant activity that makes it a candidate for use in counteracting oxidative stress-induced damage. The effect of pre-treatment with curcumin nanoparticles (nC) compared to conventional curcumin (Cs) on blood pressure, electrocardiogram, and biological changes on isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction (MI) in rats had been investigated. The Cs doses of 150 and 200 mg/kg bw and all nC doses (100, 150 and 200 mg/kg bw) significantly reduced heart rate before ISO administration and prevented QRS complex enlargement after MI induction (p < 0.026). All doses of Cs and nC prevented prolongation of the QT and QT corrected (QTc) intervals, with better results for higher doses (p < 0.048). The nC solution had more significant results than Cs in all metabolic parameters assessed (lactate dehydrogenase, glycaemia, aspartate transaminase, and alanine transaminase, p < 0.009). nC was more efficient than Cs in limiting myocardial oxidative stress and enhancing antioxidative capacity (p < 0.004). Compared to Cs, nC better prevented myocardial damage extension, reduced interstitial oedema, and inflammation. Curcumin nanoparticles as compared to conventional curcumin exert better antioxidative effects. Moreover, nC better prevent cardiomyocytes damage, and electrocardiogram alterations, in the case of ISO-induced MI in rats.
