Efficient synthesis of 3,6,13,16-tetrasubstituted-tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronenes by selective C-H/C-O arylations of anthraquinone derivatives

An efficient synthesis of tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronene derivatives having alkyl and alkoxy substituents at the 3, 6, 13, and 16-positions was achieved based on the ruthenium-catalyzed coupling reactions of anthraquinone derivatives with arylboronates via C–H and C–O bond cleavage. The reaction sequence involving the arylation, carbonyl methylenation, and oxidative cyclization effectively provided various tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronenes in short steps from readily available starting materials. Tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronenes possessing two different types of substituents were obtained selectively by sequential chemoselective C–O arylation and C–H arylation. The ¹H NMR spectra of the tetrabenzo[a,d,j,m]coronene product indicated its self-assembling behavior in CDCl₃.

Alkyne benzannulations in the preparation of contorted nanographenes

Nanographenes are a popular area of research due to their promising properties for electronics. Over the last twenty years there has been a significant increase in interest in the development of contorted nanographenes. While many top-down techniques are employed in the synthesis of these planar nanographenes, the use of alkynes in bottom-up syntheses allows for easy functionalization and the development of contorted nanographenes. The syntheses of contorted nanographenes with a focus on utilizing alkynes is reviewed here.

Is Kragujevac city still a "hot spot" area, twenty years after the bombing?

After NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, UNEP has identified Kragujevac as one of the four heavily polluted environmental "hot spots". Damaging of industrial and military targets caused the release of substantial amounts of hazardous chemical substances into the environment. This study was conducted in order to access the exposure of residents of Kragujevac city to persistent soil pollutants, twenty years after NATO air campaign. The paper reports the results of measuring radionuclides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg) in soil samples collected from two depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) at 30 locations along the riverbank of the Lepenica River. The average specific activities of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs were comparable to average worldwide values; excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) from natural radionuclides ranged from 1.1·10^-4 to 3.3·10^-4. The measured concentrations of As, Co, Cr, Cu, and Ni exceeded the limit values in most of the samples. Non-carcinogenic risk (hazard quotient and hazard index) and carcinogenic risk from heavy metals were assessed. Total hazard index was 0.257 and 2.16 for adults and children, respectively. Sum of measured PAHs ranged from 110 to 1026 μg kg^-1. Sum of PCBs exceeded the limit value of 20 μg kg^-1 in all samples (it ranged from 48.8 to 196.8 μg kg^-1), but it was still below the remediation level. The differences between two layers with respect to all measured variables were not statistically significant.

Expeditious Green Synthesis of Novel 4-Methyl-1,2,5,6-tetraazafluoranthen-3(2H)-one Analogue from Ninhydrin: N/S-Alkylation and Aza-Michael Addition

A straightforward green synthesis of 4-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetraazafluoranthen-3(2H)-one 6 is reported from ninhydrin 1 via condensation with ethyl acetoacetate, followed by cyclization with hydrazine hydrate in water as a benign solvent. Tetraazafluoranthen-3-thione 7 was obtained using Lawesson's reagent. N-alkylated tetraazafluoranthen-3-one 8-12 and S-alkylated analogues 13-15 were synthesized via alkylation. The investigation of the unique reactivity of 4-methyl-1,2,5,6-tetraazafluoranthen-3(2H)-one/thione toward the alkylation and aza-Michael additions was explored.

Spa environments in central Serbia: Geothermal potential, radioactivity, heavy metals and PAHs

This study aims to estimate geothermal potential, radioactivity levels, and environmental pollution of six most popular spas in Central Serbia (Ovčar, Gornja Trepča, Vrnjačka, Mataruška, Bogutovačka and Sokobanja), as well as to evaluate potential exposure and health risks for living and visiting population. Thermal possibilities of the studied spas showed medium and low geothermal potential with total thermal power of 0.025 MW. Gamma dose rates in air varied from 63 to 178 nSv h^-1. Specific activities of natural radionuclides (²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K) and ¹³⁷Cs in soil were measured; annual effective doses and excess lifetime cancer risk from radionuclides were calculated. Radon concentration in thermal-mineral waters from the spas ranged between 1.5 and 60.7 Bq L^-1 (the highest values were measured in Sokobanja). The annual effective dose from radon due to water ingestion was calculated. The analyzed soils had a clay loam texture. The presence of As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Hg in soil was investigated. The concentrations of As, Cr, Ni, and Hg exceeded the regulatory limits in many samples. Soil samples from Mataruška spa were generally the most contaminated with heavy metals, while the lowest heavy metal concentrations were observed in Sokobanja. Health effects of exposure to heavy metals in soil were estimated by non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk assessment. Total carcinogenic risk ranged between 6 × 10^-4 and 137 × 10^-4 for children and between 0.1 × 10^-4 and 2.2 × 10^-4 for adults. The sum of 16 PAHs analyzed in soil samples varied from 92 to 854 μg kg^-1.

Cu(I)-Catalyzed Ligand-Free Tandem One-Pot or Sequential Annulation via Knoevenagel Intermediates: An Entry into Multifunctional Naphthalenes, Phenanthrenes, Quinolines, and Benzo[b]carbazoles

A simple but efficient one-pot or sequential copper-catalyzed protocol using 2-bromoaldehydes and active methylene group containing substrates that affords multifunctional naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, quinolines, and benzo[b]carbazoles via Knoevenagel condensation, C-arylation, and decarboxylation, followed by aromatization, is developed. The reaction utilizes the potential of Knoevenagel intermediates and does not require any ancillary ligand. The phenanthrene products thus obtained show moderate fluorescence activity. Structural elaboration of the products to obtain dihydrobenzoquinazolines is also highlighted.

Photochemical rearrangement of diarylethenes: synthesis of functionalized phenanthrenes

A novel protocol for the synthesis of functionalized phenanthrenes through photocyclization of diarylethenes (DAE) under UV irradiation is proposed. The reaction proceeds through 6π-electrocyclization with the formation of a cyclic (closed) intermediate that undergoes a rearrangement affording unsymmetrical phenanthrenes in good yields. However, in contrast to benzene derivatives, the photocyclization of naphthalene diarylethenes proceeds more slowly, which is confirmed by DFT calculations. The transformation was performed on a 1 mmol scale. The scalability showed that the diarylethenes bearing oxazole, thiazole, pyrazole and imidazole as aryl moieties are more prone to photorearrangement and can be used in preparative organic synthesis.

Hexabenzocoronene Graphitic Nanocoils Appended with Crown Ethers: Supramolecular Chirality Induced by Host-Guest Interaction

We have designed and synthesized two new achiral hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivatives, HBC^CE and HBC^TEG-CE , which bear the crown ether as the pendant for the amino acid binding site. The HBC^CE self-assembled into a racemic mixture of P- and M-handed helical nanocoils, however, in the presence of chiral amino acid guests, it formed helical nanocoils with one-handed screw sense. The effects of the concentration, type and configuration of the guests on the induced circular dichroism (ICD) during the co-assembly of HBC^CE with chiral amino acids were also investigated. Additionally, after complete removal of the chiral guests, the optically active nanocoils did not racemize, even in the presence of excess amino acids with the opposite configuration. In contrast, HBC^TEG-CE with a long triethylene glycol (TEG) chain between the crown ether group and the HBC unit did not exhibit ICD during the co-assembly with chiral amino acids.

Tuning of 2D Nanographene Adlayers on Au(111) by Electrodeposition of Metal Halide Complexes

The electrodeposition of AuBr₄^- and PtBr₄^2- onto an adlayer of circobiphenyl-a structurally defined nanographene with low symmetry-on a Au(111) electrode was investigated via electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) to control and understand the formation of characteristic nanoclusters. By immersing a circobiphenyl-coated Au(111) substrate in a 0.1 mM aqueous AuBr₄^- solution, AuBr₄^- was spontaneously reduced, and a characteristic mixed adlayer consisting of circobiphenyl molecules and Br^- ions with monatomic Au islands was produced on the Au(111) surface. A similar electrodeposition process was performed in an aqueous solution of PtBr₄^2-, and an identical mixed adlayer was obtained with Pt nanoclusters. The electrodeposition of Au and Pt complexes was facilitated by the "negatively charged" reconstructed Au(111) surface, which is stabilized by the formation of a highly ordered circobiphenyl adlayer. EC-STM revealed the formation of characteristic dimers of Pt clusters ranging 2-4 nm in diameter on the circobiphenyl adlayer. Thus, Br^- metal complexes were found to play an important role in controlling the structure and size of a mixed adlayer containing Br^- and the shape of Pt clusters.

Borazatruxenes

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of arene-borazine hybrids called borazatruxenes. These molecules are BN-isosteres of truxene whereby the central benzene core has been replaced by a borazine ring. The straightforward three step synthesis, stability and their chiroptical and electronic properties recommend them as new scaffolds for BN-carbon hybrid materials. Computational studies at DFT level, closely matching the experimental data, provided insights in the electronic structure of these molecules.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Dimorphic Dibenzo[cde,opq]rubicene

Dibenzo[cde,opq]rubicene has been synthesized by an eight-step reaction sequence including an iron-mediated [2+2+1] cycloaddition and a flash vacuum pyrolysis as key steps. Two crystal modifications of the S-shaped, planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon have been obtained and characterized by X-ray diffractometry.

Annulative π-Extension of Unactivated Benzene Derivatives through Nondirected C-H Arylation

Annulative π-extension chemistry provides a concise synthetic route to polycyclic arenes. Herein, we disclose a nondirected annulation approach of unactivated simple arenes. The palladium-catalyzed 2-fold C-H arylation event facilitates tandem C-C linkage relays to furnish fully benzenoid triphenylene frameworks using cyclic diaryliodonium salts. The inseparable regioisomeric mixture of 1- and 2-methyltriphenylenes is identified by the combined analysis of ion mobility-mass spectrometry, gas-phase infrared spectroscopy, and molecular simulation studies.

Towards Nonalternant Nanographenes through Self-Promoted Intramolecular Indenoannulation Cascade by C-F Bond Activation

Large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) containing pentagons represent an important class of compounds that are considered to be superior materials in future nano-electronic applications. From this perspective, the development of synthetic approaches to large PAHs and nanographenes (NGs) is a matter of great importance. In this context indenoannulation appears to be the most practical way to introduce pentagons into NGs. Here we report that alumina-mediated C-F bond activation is an attractive tool for the synthesis of non-alternant NGs bearing several pentagons. The unique nature of the reaction leads to a rather counter-intuitive outcome and allows considering each previous aryl-aryl coupling as a promoter of the following one, despite the continuous increase in the strain energy. Thus, the presented strategy combines both facile synthesis and significant yields for large nonalternant PAHs and NGs.

Pd-Catalyzed Annulation of 1-Halo-8-arylnaphthalenes and Alkynes Leading to Heptagon-Embedded Aromatic Systems

A palladium-catalyzed heptagon-forming annulation reaction between 1-halo-8-arylnaphthalene and diarylacetylene is reported. The reaction is promoted using a catalytic system comprised of Pd(OAc)₂ , moderately electron-deficient triarylphosphine P(4-ClC₆ H₄ )₃ , and Ag₂ CO₃ to afford benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2,3-de]naphthalene derivatives in moderate to good yields, in preference to fluoranthene as a competing byproduct. Twofold annulation can also be achieved to access a novel heptagon-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound.

Oxygen Evolution Reaction at Carbon Edge Sites: Investigation of Activity Evolution and Structure-Function Relationships with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The abundance of available surface chemical information and edge structures of carbon materials have attracted tremendous interest in catalysis. For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the edge effects of carbon materials have rarely been studied in detail because of the complexity of various coexisting edge configurations and the controversy between carbon corrosion and carbon catalysis. Herein, the exact roles of common carbon active edge sites in the OER were interrogated using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with designated configurations (zigzag and armchair) as model probe molecules, with a focus on structure-function relationships. Zigzag configurations of PAHs showed high activity for the OER while also showing a good stability at a reasonable potential. They show a TOF value of 0.276 s^-1 in 0.1 m KOH. The catalytic activity of carbon edge sites was further effectively regulated by extending the π conjugation structure at a molecular level.

Facile Synthesis of Dibenzotetracenedione Derivatives by Rhodium-Catalyzed [2+2+2] Cycloaddition/Spontaneous Aromatization

It has been established that a cationic rhodium(I)/SEGPHOS complex catalyzes the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of biphenyl-linked 1,7-diynes with 1,4-naphthoquinone and anthracene-1,4-dione. Conveniently, spontaneous aromatization proceeded upon removal of the rhodium complex by passing the reaction mixture through an alumina column, to give the corresponding dibenzotetracenediones and dibenzopentacenediones, respectively, in good yields. The obtained dibenzotetracenedione could be readily transformed into the corresponding dibenzotetracene in good yield. This dibenzotetracene showed blue fluorescence with a good quantum yield, which was significantly higher than those of tetracene, tetrabenzotetracene, and hexabenzotetracene.

Thermoelectric properties of nanostructured systems based on narrow armchair graphene nanoribbons

Thermoelectric properties of hybrid systems composed of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) coupled to rectangular rings or functionalized with aromatic carbon molecules are theoretically addressed here. Graphene-based nanostructures are designed with the purpose of enhancing thermopower responses compared to the thermal performance of pristine GNRs. The electronic transport is calculated using standard tight binding models and the Landauer transport formalism. We found that both semiconducting and metallic armchair nanoribbons coupled to rings exhibit a pronounced enhancement of the thermoelectric responses with comparable intensities, due to Fano antiresonance and Breit-Wigner-like resonances in the electronic transport. As expected, details of the ring geometry and ribbons are important in determining the precise chemical potential values for optimal performance. Different configurations of attached aromatic molecules (single and double molecules) at the graphene nanoribbon edges are addressed. Our findings show that the presence of a molecule induces a gap formation in the metallic pristine GNRs, and a pronounced peak of the Seebeck coefficient is revealed for low chemical potential values, independent of the molecule length. Other features on the Seebeck spectra are found to depend on the electronic nature of the GNRs and on the molecule length and distribution. We have shown that by playing with them, it is possible to design better thermoelectric devices based on GNRs.

Regioselective Hydrogenation of a 60-Carbon Nanographene Molecule toward a Circumbiphenyl Core

Regioselective peripheral hydrogenation of a nanographene molecule with 60 contiguous sp² carbons provides unprecedented access to peralkylated circumbiphenyl (1). Conversion to the circumbiphenyl core structure was unambiguously validated by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. UV–vis absorption spectra and DFT calculations demonstrated the significant change of the optoelectronic properties upon peripheral hydrogenation. Stimulated emission from 1, observed via ultrafast transient absorption measurements, indicates potential as an optical gain material.

Size-Dependent Electronic Properties of Uniform Ensembles of Strongly Confined Graphene Quantum Dots

The electronic structure of a series of bottom-up synthesized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) smaller than 2 nm was investigated by spectroelectrochemistry, yielding insights not previously available from ensemble-level studies. The results show that for the strongly confined GQDs the dependence of the band gap on the GQD size deviates from the prediction of the standard Dirac Fermion model but agrees well with the models explicitly accounting for the electron-electron and electron-hole interactions. The HOMO/LUMO energy levels are found to be distributed nearly symmetrically around the 0 V value versus normal hydrogen electrode (NHE), becoming more positive/negative, respectively, with increasing GQD size. The exciton binding energies are found to follow power dependence on the number of carbon atoms per GQD, with the experimental values falling within the range of ∼0.1 to ∼0.6 eV. Given the broad accessibility of the described experimental tools and methods, our work opens a path to a more systematic examination of quantum confinement effects in GQDs.

Simultaneous expansion of 9,10 boron-doped anthracene in longitudinal and lateral directions

Doubly boron-doped anthracenes and pentacenes have been longitudinally and laterally expanded through annulation of thiophene or benzene rings. The obtained series of closely related compounds allowed an assessment of key structure-property relationships with a focus on optoelectronic characteristics. Most of the products are benchtop-stable blue emitters and capable of accepting two electrons in a reversible manner. The syntheses involved late-stage modifications through photocyclization or stepwise oxidative C-C coupling (DDQ/BF₃·Et₂O) as well as cyclocondensation of ortho-disilylated or -diborylated aryl building blocks.

Fluorescence of a chiral pentaphene derivative derived from the hexabenzocoronene Motif

A new fluorescent pentaphene derivative is presented that differs from hexabenzocoronene (HBC) by one carbon atom in the basal plane skeleton.

Functionalization of the "Bay Region" of Perylene in Reaction with 1-Arylalk-2-yn-1-ones Catalyzed by Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid: One-Step Approach to 1-Acyl-2-alkylbenzo[ ghi]perylenes

We describe a convenient method of the synthesis of 1-acyl-2-alkylbenzo[ ghi]perylenes via functionalization of the "bay region" of perylene in the reaction with 1-arylalk-2-yn-1-ones catalyzed by trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. We showed that the formation of 1-acyl-2-alkylbenzo[ ghi]perylenes from perylene and 1-arylalk-2-yn-1-ones might occur via spontaneous aromatization of 1-acyl-2-alkyl-2a,12a-dihydrogenbenzo[ ghi]perylenes by oxidation with dioxygen or by the hydrogen transfer to 1-arylalk-2-yn-1-ones. These compounds are fluorescent in solution with a high Stokes shift and with a Φ_F value of up to 0.17 (and 0.36 in solid).

Alternating oligo(o,p-phenylenes) via ruthenium catalyzed diol-diene benzannulation: orthogonality to cross-coupling enables de novo nanographene and PAH construction

Ruthenium(0) catalyzed diol-diene benzannulation is applied to the conversion of oligo(p-phenylene vinylenes) 2a-c, 5 and 6 to alternating oligo(o,p-phenylenes) 10a-c, 11-13. Orthogonality with respect to conventional palladium catalyzed biaryl cross-coupling permits construction of p-bromo-terminated alternating oligo(o,p-phenylenes) 10b, 11-13, which can be engaged in Suzuki cross-coupling and Scholl oxidation. In this way, structurally homogeneous nanographenes 16a-f are prepared. Nanographene 16a, which incorporates 14 fused benzene rings, was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In a similar fashion, p-bromo-terminated oligo(p-phenylene ethane diol) 9, which contains a 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene core, is converted to the soluble, structurally homogeneous hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene 18. A benzothiophene-terminated pentamer 10c was prepared and subjected to Scholl oxidation to furnish the helical bis(benzothiophene)-fused picene derivative 14. The steady-state absorption and emission properties of nanographenes 14, 16a,b,d,e,h and 18 were characterized. These studies illustrate how orthogonality of ruthenium(0) catalyzed diol-diene benzannulation with respect to classical biaryl cross-coupling streamlines oligophenylene and nanographene construction.

A Supramolecular Approach to the Preparation of Nanographene Adlayers Using Water-Soluble Molecular Capsules

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are excellent building blocks for the creation of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. However, large PAHs tend to exhibit poor or no solubility in organic solvents and water. To overcome this issue, we employed water-soluble micellar capsules consisting of V-shaped amphiphilic molecules. Characteristic electrochemical behavior was observed in 0.1 m H₂ SO₄ in the presence of the water-soluble capsules containing PAHs, such as ovalene, circobiphenyl, and dicoronylene. Furthermore, under these conditions, PAHs were released from the capsules, resulting in the formation of a 2D adlayer of PAHs at the electrochemical interface. Finally, using electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that our molecular containers based on water-soluble molecular capsules allow the facile preparation of 2D PAH adlayers in addition to structurally controlling nanostructure formation on Au surfaces.

Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed Microwave-Promoted Multiple C-H Activation in Synthesis of Hexa(heteroaryl)benzenes in Water

A series of hexa(heteroaryl)benzenes were synthesized by the Ru(II)-carboxylate-catalyzed multiple C-H activation of benzenes carrying pyridyl, pyrimidyl, or pyrazolyl directing groups using N-heteroaryl bromides as coupling partners. The reactions proceeded with high selectivity under microwave irradiation in water. Iterative penta-arylation could be implemented via activation of C-H bonds of generated intermediates by cascade chelation assistance of in situ installed pyridyl groups. This strategy provides multidentate ligands for selective complexation of transition metals and potential building of photoredox systems.

Allylation of Orthoquinones Towards Annulated Polycyclic Aromatic Systems

Promising results of an efficient and convenient strategy for the annulation of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), employing orthoquinones as starting material and comprising allylation, pinacol rearrangement, ring-closing metathesis (RCM), and one-pot reduction followed by Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement, are presented. The strategy involves introducing triallylborane prepared in situ in the allylation step. Moreover, a novel expedient method for the preparation of 9,10-diallylphenanthrene was introduced.

Modular Design of Fluorescent Dibenzo- and Naphtho-Fluoranthenes: Structural Rearrangements and Electronic Properties

A library of 12 dibenzo- and naphtho-fluoranthene polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with MW = 302 (C₂₄H₁₄) was synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed fluoranthene ring-closing reaction. By understanding the various modes by which the palladium migrates during the transformation, structural rearrangements were bypassed, obtaining pure PAHs in high yields. Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization demonstrated the profound diversity in the electronic structures between isomers. Highlighting the significant differences in emission of visible light, this library of PAHs will enable their standardization for toxicological assessment and potential use as optoelectronic materials.

Nanocage-Confined Synthesis of Fluorescent Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Zeolite

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) attract much attention for applications to organic light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, and photovoltaic cells. The current synthetic approaches to PAHs involve high-temperature flash pyrolysis or complicated step-by-step organic reactions, which lead to low yields of PAHs. Herein, we report a facile and scalable synthesis of PAHs, which is carried out simply by flowing acetylene gas into zeolite under mild heating, typically at 400 °C and generates the products of 0.30 g g^-1 zeolite. PAHs are synthesized via acetylene polymerization inside Ca²⁺-ion-exchanged Linde type A (LTA) zeolite, of which the α-cage puts a limit on the product molecular size as a confined-space nanoreactor. The resultant product after the removal of the zeolite framework exhibits brilliant white fluorescence emission in N-methylpyrrolidone solution. The product is separated into four different color emitters (violet, blue, green, and orange) by column chromatography. Detailed characterizations of the products by means of various spectroscopic methods and mainly mass spectrometric analyses indicate that coronene (C₂₄H₁₂) is the main component of the blue emitter, while the green emitter is a mixture of planar and curved PAHs. The orange can be attributed to curved PAHs larger than ovalene, and the violet to smaller molecules than coronene. The PAH growth mechanism inside Ca²⁺-exchanged LTA zeolite is proposed on the basis of mass spectral analyses and density functional theory calculations.

Behaviour of the XH-*-π and YX-*-π interactions (X, Y = F, Cl, Br and I) in the coronene π-system, as elucidated by QTAIM dual functional analysis with QC calculations

The dynamic and static nature of XH-*-π and YX-*-π in the coronene π-system (π(C24H12)) is elucidated by QTAIM dual functional analysis, where * emphasizes the presence of bond critical points (BCPs) in the interactions. The nature of the interactions is elucidated by analysing the plots of the total electron energy densities H b(r c) versus H b(r c) - V b(r c)/2 [=(ħ 2/8m)∇2 ρ b(r c)] for the interactions at BCPs, where V b(r c) are the potential energy densities at the BCPs. The data for the perturbed structures around the fully optimized structures are employed for the plots in addition to those of the fully optimized structures. The plots are analysed using the polar coordinate of (R, θ) for the data of the fully optimized structures, while those containing the perturbed structures are analysed using (θ p, κ p), where θ p corresponds to the tangent line of each plot and κ p is the curvature. Whereas (R, θ) show the static nature, (θ p, κ p) represent the dynamic nature of the interactions. All interactions in X-H-*-π(C24H12) (X = F, Cl, Br and I) and Y-X-*-π(C24H12) (Y-X = F-F, Cl-Cl, Br-Br, I-I, F-Cl, F-Br and F-I) are classified by pure CS (closed shell) interactions and are characterized as having the vdW nature, except for X-H = F-H and Y-X = F-Cl, F-Br and F-I, which show the typical-HB nature without covalency. The structural features of the complexes are also discussed.
