Abstract
Global climate change-induced abiotic stresses (e.g., drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, heavy metals, and UV radiation) have destabilized the fragile agroecosystems and impaired plant performance and thereby reducing crop productivity and quality. Biostimulants, as a promising and eco-friendly approach, are widely used to address environmental concerns and fulfill the need for developing sustainable/modern agriculture. Current knowledge revealed that plant and animal derived stimulants (e.g., seaweeds and phytoextracts, humic substances, and protein hydrolysate) as well as microbial stimulants (e.g., plant beneficial bacteria or fungi) have great potential to elicit plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses and thus enhancing plant growth and performance-related parameters (such as root growth/diameter, flowering, nutrient use efficiency/translocation, soil water holding capacity, and microbial activity). However, to successfully implement biostimulant-based agriculture in the field under changing climate, the understanding of agricultural functions and action mechanism of biostimulants coping with various abiotic stresses at physicochemical, metabolic, and molecular levels is needed. Therefore, this review attempts to unravel the underlying mechanisms of action mediated by diverse biostimulants in relation to abiotic stress alleviation as well as to discuss the current challenges in their commercialization and implementation in agriculture under changing climate conditions.

Abstract
Climate change is a critical yield-limiting factor that has threatened the entire global crop production system in the present scenario. The use of biostimulants in agriculture has shown tremendous potential in combating climate change-induced stresses such as drought, salinity, temperature stress, etc. Biostimulants are organic compounds, microbes, or amalgamation of both that could regulate plant growth behavior through molecular alteration and physiological, biochemical, and anatomical modulations. Their nature is diverse due to the varying composition of bioactive compounds, and they function through various modes of action. To generate a successful biostimulatory action on crops under different parameters, a multi-omics approach would be beneficial to identify or predict its outcome comprehensively. The 'omics' approach has greatly helped us to understand the mode of action of biostimulants on plants at cellular levels. Biostimulants acting as a messenger in signal transduction resembling phytohormones and other chemical compounds and their cross-talk in various abiotic stresses help us design future crop management under changing climate, thus, sustaining food security with finite natural resources. This review article elucidates the strategic potential and prospects of biostimulants in mitigating the adverse impacts of harsh environmental conditions on plants.

Abstract
Plant priming is an induced physiological state where plants are protected from biotic and abiotic stresses. Whether seaweed extracts promote priming is largely unknown as is the mechanism by which priming may occur. In this study, we examined the effect of a seaweed extract (SWE) on two distinct stages of plant priming (priming phase and post-challenge primed state) by characterising (i) plant gene expression responses using qRT-PCR and (ii) signal transduction responses by evaluating reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The SWE is made from the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum and Durvillaea potatorum. The priming phase was examined using both Arabidopsis thaliana and Solanum lycopersicum. At this stage, the SWE up-regulated key priming-related genes, such as those related to systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and activated the production of ROS. These responses were found to be temporal (lasting 3 days). The post-challenge primed state was examined using A. thaliana challenged with a root pathogen. Similarly, defence response-related genes, such as PR1 and NPR1, were up-regulated and ROS production was activated (lasting 5 days). This study found that SWE induces plant priming-like responses by (i) up-regulating genes associated with plant defence responses and (ii) increasing production of ROS associated with signalling responses.

Abstract
Adverse detrimental impacts of environmental pollution over the health regimen of people has driven a shift in lifestyle towards cleaner and natural resources, especially in the aspects of food production and consumption. Microalgae are considered a rich source of high value metabolites to be utilized as plant growth biostimulants. These organisms however, are underrated compared to other microbial counterparts, due to inappropriate knowledge on the technical, enviro-economical constrains leading to low market credibility. Thus, to avert these issues, the present review comprehensively discusses the biostimulatory potential of microalgae interactively combined with circular bio-economy perspectives. The biochemical content and intracellular action mechanism of microalgal biostimulants were described. Furthermore, detailed country-wise market trends along with the description of the existing regulatory policies are included. Enviro-techno-economic challenges are discussed, and the consensus need for shift to biorefinery and circular bio-economy concept are emphasized to achieve sustainable impacts during the commercialization of microalgal biostimulants.

Abstract
Climate change is a pressing matter of anthropogenic nature to which agriculture contributes by abusing production inputs such as inorganic fertilizers and fertigation water, thus degrading land and water sources. Moreover, as the increase in the demand of food in 2050 is estimated to be 25 to 70% more than what is currently produced today, a sustainable intensification of agriculture is needed. Biostimulant substances are products that the EU states work by promoting growth, resistance to plant abiotic stress, and increasing produce quality, and may be a valid strategy to enhance sustainable agricultural practice. Presented in this review is a comprehensive look at the scientific literature regarding the widely used and EU-sanctioned biostimulant substances categories of silicon, seaweed extracts, protein hydrolysates, and humic substances. Starting from their origin, the modulation of plants' hormonal networks, physiology, and stress defense systems, their in vivo effects are discussed on some of the most prominent vegetable species of the popular plant groupings of cucurbits, leafy greens, and nightshades. The review concludes by identifying several research areas relevant to biostimulant substances to exploit and enhance the biostimulant action of these substances and signaling molecules in horticulture.
