Abstract
Enriched semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT (6,5) and SWCNT (7,6)) and HiPco nanotubes were covalently functionalized with either zinc phthalocyanine or silicon phthalocyanine as electron donors. The synthetic strategy resulted in edge-on and face-on geometries with respect to the phthalocyanine geometry, with both phthalocyanines held by an electronically conducting diphenylacetylene linker. The extent of functionalization in the MPc-SWCNT (M = Zn or Si) donor-acceptor nanohybrids was determined by systematic studies involving AFM, TGA, XPS, optical and Raman techniques. Intramolecular interactions in MPc-SWCNT nanohybrids were probed by studies involving optical absorbance, Raman, luminescence and electrochemical studies. Different degrees of interactions were observed depending on the type of MPc and mode of attachment. Substantial quenching of MPc fluorescence in these hybrids was observed from steady-state and three-dimensional fluorescence mapping, which suggests the occurrence of excited state events. Evidence for the occurrence of excited state charge transfer type interactions was subsequently secured from femtosecond transient absorption studies covering both the visible and near-infrared regions. Furthermore, electron-pooling experiments performed in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor and a second electron acceptor revealed accumulation of one-electron reduced product upon continuous irradiation of the nanohybrids. In such experiments, the ZnPc-SWCNT (6,5) nanohybrid outperformed other nanohybrids and this suggests that this is a superior donor-acceptor system for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
A new zinc phthalocyanine-zinc porphyrin dyad (ZnPc-ZnP) fused through a pyrazine ring has been synthesized as a receptor for imidazole-substituted C60 (C60Im) electron acceptor. Self-assembly via metal-ligand axial coordination and the pertinent association constants in solution were determined by 1H-NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence titration experiments at room temperature. The designed host was able to bind up to two C60Im electron acceptor guest molecules to yield C60Im:ZnPc-ZnP:ImC60 donor-acceptor supramolecular complex. The spectral data showed that the two binding sites behave independently with binding constants similar in magnitude. Steady-state fluorescence studies were indicative of an efficient singlet-singlet energy transfer from zinc porphyrin to zinc phthalocyanine within the fused dyad. Accordingly, the transient absorption studies covering a wide timescale of femto-to-milli seconds revealed ultrafast energy transfer from 1ZnP* to ZnPc (kEnT ∼ 1012 s-1) in the fused dyad. Further, a photo induced electron transfer was observed in the supramolecularly assembled C60Im:ZnPc-ZnP:ImC60 donor-acceptor complex leading to charge separated states, which persisted for about 200 ns.

Abstract
A series of light-harvesting conjugates based on a zinc(II) phthalocyanine core with either two or four boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) or porphyrin units have been synthesized and characterized. The conjugation of BODIPY/porphyrin units can extend the absorptions of the phthalocyanine core to cover most of the visible region. Upon addition of an imidazole-substituted C60 (C60 Im), it can axially bind to the zinc(II) center of the phthalocyanine core through metal-ligand interactions. The resulting complexes form photosynthetic antenna-reaction center mimics in which the BODIPY/porphyrin units serve as the antennas to capture the light and transfer the energy to the phthalocyanine core by efficient excitation energy transfer. The excited phthalocyanine is then quenched by the axially bound C60 Im moiety by electron transfer, which has been supported by computational studies. The photoinduced processes of the assemblies have been studied in detail by various steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. By femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic studies, the lifetimes of the charge-separated state of the bis(BODIPY) and bis(porphyrin) systems have been determined to be 3.2 and 4.0 ns, respectively.

Abstract
A multi-modular donor-acceptor triad composed of zinc porphyrin, BF2-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY), and C60 was newly synthesized, with the BODIPY entity at the central position. Using absorbance and emission spectral, electrochemical redox, and computational optimization results, energy level diagrams for the ZnP-BODIPY dyad and ZnP-BODIPY-C60 triad were constructed to envision the different photochemical events upon selective excitation of the BODIPY and ZnP entities. By transient absorption spectral studies covering a wide femtosecond-to-millisecond time scale, evidence for the different photochemical events and their kinetic information was secured. Efficient singlet-singlet energy transfer from 1BODIPY* to ZnP with a rate constant kENT = 1.7 × 1010 s-1 in toluene was observed in the case of the ZnP-BODIPY dyad. Interestingly, in the case of the ZnP-BODIPY-C60 triad, the selective excitation of ZnP resulted in electron transfer leading to the formation of the ZnP˙+-BODIPY-C60˙- charge-separated state. Owing to the distal separation of the radical cation and radical anion species (edge-to-edge distance of 18.7 Å), the radical ion-pair persisted for microseconds. By contrast, the selective excitation of BODIPY resulted in an ultrafast energy transfer to yield ZnP-BODIPY-1C60* as the major product. The 1C60* populated the low-lying 3C60* via intersystem crossing prior to returning to the ground state. The present study successfully demonstrates the importance of supramolecular geometry and selection of excitation wavelength in regulating the different photoprocesses.

Abstract
Noncovalent interactions play a significant role in a wide variety of biological processes and bio-inspired species. It is, therefore, important to have at hand suitable computational methods for their investigation. In this paper, we report on the contribution of dispersion and hydrogen bonds in both stacked and T-shaped catechol dimers, with the aim of delineating the respective role of these classes of interactions in determining the most stable structure. By using second-order Møller⁻Plesset (MP2) calculations with a small basis set, specifically optimized for these species, we have explored a number of significant sections of the interaction potential energy surface and found the most stable structures for the dimer, in good agreement with the highly accurate, but computationally more expensive coupled cluster single and double excitation and the perturbative triples (CCSD(T))/CBS) method.

Abstract
![]()
DNA is well-known as bearer of the genetic code.
Since its structure
elucidation nearly seven decades ago by Watson, Crick, Wilkins, and
Franklin, much has been learned about its detailed structure, function,
and genetic coding. The development of automated solid-phase synthesis,
and with it the availability of synthetic DNA with any desired sequence
in lengths of up to hundreds of bases in the best case, has contributed
much to the advancement of the field of DNA research. In addition,
classic organic synthesis has allowed introduction of a very large
number of modifications in the DNA in a sequence specific manner,
which have initially been targeted at altering the biological function
of DNA. However, in recent years DNA has become a very attractive
scaffold in supramolecular chemistry, where DNA is taken out of its
biological role and serves as both stick and glue molecule to assemble
novel functional structures with nanometer precision. The attachment
of functionalities to DNA has led to the creation of supramolecular
systems with applications in light harvesting, energy and electron
transfer, sensing, and catalysis. Functional DNA is clearly having
a significant impact in the field of bioinspired nanosystems. Of particular interest is the use of porphyrins in supramolecular
chemistry and bionanotechnology, because they are excellent functional
groups due to their electronic properties that can be tailored through
chemical modifications of the aromatic core or through insertion of
almost any metal of the periodic table into the central cavity. The
porphyrins can be attached either to the nucleobase, to the phosphate
group, or to the ribose moiety. Additionally, noncovalent templating
through Watson–Crick base pairing forms an alternative and
attractive approach. With this, the combination of two seemingly simple
molecules gives rise to a highly complex system with unprecedented
possibilities for modulation of function, and with it applications,
particularly when combined with other functional groups. Here, an
overview is given on the developments of using porphyrin modified
DNA for the construction of functional assemblies. Strategies for
the synthesis and characterization are presented alongside selected
applications where the porphyrin modification has proven to be particularly
useful and superior to other modifiers but also has revealed its limitations.
We also discuss implications on properties and behavior of the porphyrin–DNA,
where similar issues could arise when using other hydrophobic and
bulky substituents on DNA. This includes particularly problems regarding
synthesis of the building blocks, DNA synthesis, yields, solubility,
and intermolecular interactions.

Abstract
This work describes a new approach to obtain new β-vinylporphyrin derivatives through palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of 2-bromo-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatozinc(II) with N-tosylhydrazones. This is the first report of the use of such synthetic methodology in porphyrin chemistry allowing the synthesis of new derivatives, containing β-arylvinyl substituents.

Abstract
Two new macrocyclic ligands containing 17- and 19-membered O2N3-donor aza-crowns anchored to [60]Fullerene were synthesized and characterized by employing HPLC, electrospray ionization mass (ESI-MS), 1H and 13C NMR, UV-vis, IR spectroscopies, as well as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in solid state. TGA measurements revealed that upon linking each of these macrocycle rings to [60]Fullerene, the decomposition point measured for [60]Fullerene moiety was increased, indicating on the promoted stability of [60]Fullerene backbone during binding to these macrocyclic ligands. Moreover, the ground state non-covalent interactions of [60]Fullerene derivatives of O2Nx (x=2, and 3) aza-crown macrocyclic ligands namely, L1-L4 with zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) were also investigated by UV-vis absorption, steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectrophotometry in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). The calculation of Stern-Volmer constants (KSV) indicated on existence of an efficient quenching mechanism comprising of the excited singlet state of ZnPc in the presence of L1-L4. The observation of an appropriate correlation between decrease in fluorescence intensity and lifetime parameters led us to propose the occurrence of a static mechanism for the fluorescence quenching of ZnPc in the presence of L1-L3. The binding constants (KBH) of L1-L4/ZnPc were also determined applying the fluorescence quenching experiments. Meanwhile, the incompatibility of both KSV and KBH values found for L4 was also described in terms of structural features using DFT calculations using the B3LYP functional and 6-31G* basis set.

Abstract
The first hybrid di- and trinuclear iron(II)-zirconium(IV) and iron(II)-hafnium(IV) macrobicyclic complexes with one or two apical 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin fragments were obtained using transmetalation reaction between n-butylboron-triethylantimony-capped or bis(triethylantimony)-capped iron(II) clathrochelate precursors and dichlorozirconium(IV)- or dichlorohafnium(IV)-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrins under mild conditions. New di- and trinuclear porphyrinoclathrochelates of general formula FeNx3((Bn-Bu)(MTPP)) and FeNx3(MTPP)2 [M = Zr, Hf; TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraporphyrinato(2-); Nx = nioximo(2-)] were characterized by one-dimensional (1H and 13C{1H}) and two-dimensional (COSY and HSQC) NMR, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-visible, and magnetic circular dichroism spectra, single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, as well as elemental analyses. Redox properties of all complexes were probed using electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical approaches. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical data suggestive of a very weak, if any, long-range electronic coupling between two porphyrin π-systems in FeNx3(MTPP)2 complexes. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations were used to correlate spectroscopic signatures and redox properties of new compounds with their electronic structures.

Abstract
A high potential donor-acceptor dyad composed of zinc porphyrin bearing three meso-pentafluorophenyl substituents covalently linked to C60 , as a novel dyad capable of generating charge-separated states of high energy (potential) has been developed. The calculated energy of the charge-separated state was found to be 1.70 eV, the highest reported for a covalently linked porphyrin-fullerene dyad. Intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer leading to charge-separated states of appreciable lifetimes in polar and nonpolar solvents has been established from studies involving femto- to nanosecond transient absorption techniques. The high energy stored in the form of charge-separated states along with its persistence of about 50-60 ns makes this dyad a potential electron-transporting catalyst to carry out energy-demanding photochemical reactions. This type of high-energy harvesting dyad is expected to open new research in the areas of artificial photosynthesis especially producing energy (potential) demanding light-to-fuel products.

Abstract
Good combination! Axial coordination of gold porphyrin, as an electron acceptor, with zinc phthalocyanine, as an electron donor, results in the formation of a novel supramolecular dyad which can mimic the efficient electron transfer process of a photosynthetic reaction center complex.
