Abstract
The use of 3d metals in de/hydrogenation catalysis has emerged as a competitive field with respect to "traditional" precious metal catalyzed transformations. The introduction of functional pincer ligands that can store protons and/or electrons as expressed by metal-ligand cooperativity and ligand redox-activity strongly stimulated this development as a conceptual starting point for rational catalyst design. This review aims at providing a comprehensive picture of the utilization of functional pincer ligands in first-row transition metal hydrogenation and dehydrogenation catalysis and related synthetic concepts relying on these such as the hydrogen borrowing methodology. Particular emphasis is put on the implementation and relevance of cooperating and redox-active pincer ligands within the mechanistic scenarios.

Abstract
A transition-metal-catalyzed borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen auto-transfer strategy allows the utilization of feedstock alcohols as an alkylating partner, which avoids the formation of stoichiometric salt waste and enables a direct and benign approach for the construction of C-N and C-C bonds. In this study, a nickel-catalyzed α-alkylation of unactivated amides and ester (tert-butyl acetate) is carried out by using primary alcohols under mild conditions. This C-C bond-forming reaction is catalyzed by a new, molecularly defined nickel(II) NNN-pincer complex (0.1-1 mol %) and proceeds through hydrogen auto-transfer, thereby releasing water as the sole byproduct. In addition, N-alkylation of cyclic amides under Ni-catalytic conditions is demonstrated.

Abstract
ABSTRACT A series of neutral bis- and cationic tris-carbonyl complexes of the types cis-[M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)2Y] and [M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)3]+ was prepared by reacting [M(CO)5Y] (M = Mn, Re; Y = Cl or Br) with PNP pincer ligands derived from the 2,6-diaminopyridine, 2,6-dihydroxypyridine, and 2,6-lutidine scaffolds. With the most bulky ligand PNPNH-tBu, the cationic square-pyramidal 16e bis-carbonyl complex [Mn(PNPNH-tBu)(CO)2]+ was obtained. In contrast, in the case of rhenium, the 18e complex [Re(PNPNH-tBu)(CO)3]+ was formed. The dissociation of CO was studied by means of DFT calculation revealing in agreement with experimental findings that CO release from [M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)3]+ is in general endergonic, while for [Mn(κ3 P,N,P-PNPNH-tBu)(CO)3]+, this process is thermodynamically favored. X-ray structures of representative complexes are provided. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction of α-C(sp3)-H bonds in N-methylamides with C(sp3)-H bonds from cyclic alkanes has been developed, which offers a cheap transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation method for amides without the requirement for any extraneous directing group. This new strategy is highly selective and tolerates a variety of functional groups. Mechanistic investigations into the reaction process are also described in detail.

Abstract
An iron(0) complex bearing a cyclopentadienone ligand catalyzed N-methylation and N-ethylation of aryl and aliphatic amines with methanol or ethanol in mild and basic conditions through a hydrogen autotransfer borrowing process is reported. A broad range of aromatic and aliphatic amines underwent mono- or dimethylation in high yields. DFT calculations suggest molecular hydrogen acts not only as a reducing agent but also as an additive to displace thermodynamic equilibria.

Abstract
The use of methanol for the selective methylation of aromatic amines with RuHCl(CO)(PNHP) (PNHP = bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)amine) is reported. Various aromatic amines were transformed into their corresponding monomethylated secondary amines in high yields at 150 °C with a very low catalyst loading (0.02-0.1 mol %) in the presence of KO tBu (20-60 mol %). The catalyst precursor, RuHCl(CO)(PNHP), was converted to [RuH(CO)2(PNHP)]+ under the catalytic conditions and also serves as a highly effective catalyst. The robustness of this catalyst contributes to its outstanding catalytic activity, even under reaction conditions, in which CO is liberated from methanol.

Abstract
The catalyst-free N-formylation of amines using CO2 as the C1 source and BH3NH3 as the reductant has been developed for the first time. The corresponding formylated products of both primary and secondary amines are obtained in good to excellent yields (up to 96% of isolated yield) under mild conditions.

Abstract
C-H methylation is an attractive chemical transformation for C-C bonds construction in organic chemistry, yet efficient methylation of readily available (bio)alcohols in water using methanol as sustainable C1 feedstock is limited. Herein, iridium nanocatalysts encapsulated in yolk-shell-structured mesoporous carbon nanospheres (Ir@YSMCNs) were synthesized for this transformation. Monodispersed Ir clusters (ca. 1.0 nm) were encapsulated in situ and spatially isolated within YSMCNs by a silica-assisted sol-gel emulsion strategy. A selection of (bio)alcohols (19 examples) was selectively methylated in aqueous phase with good-to-high yields over the developed Ir@YSMCNs. The improved catalytic efficiencies in terms of activity and selectivity together with the good stability and recyclability were contributable to the ultrasmall Ir clusters with oxidation chemical state as a consequence of the confinement effect of YSMCNs with interconnected nanostructures.
