Effect of laser power on cleaning mechanism and surface properties

In this paper, the mechanism of laser dry cleaning was introduced, and the influence of different power on laser cleaning effect and surface performance after cleaning were investigated. The cleaning effect of 60-120 W cleaning power on the oxidized layer of a Q235 surface was analyzed by experiment and simulation. The results showed that the cleaning power of 70 W makes the surface performance after cleaning of the samples relatively optimized. The best cleaning power is 90 W. The sample surface of 100 W is the smoothest, but it causes slight damage to the matrix. The cleaning power of 120 W has the maximum friction coefficient, but it has the maximum damage to the matrix.

Well-Adhered Copper Nanocubes on Electrospun Polymeric Fibers

Electrospun polymer fibers can be used as templates for the stabilization of metallic nanostructures, but metallic species and polymer macromolecules generally exhibit weak interfacial adhesion. We have investigated the adhesion of model copper nanocubes on chemically treated aligned electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers based on the introduction of interfacial shear strains through mechanical deformation. The composite structures were subjected to distinct macroscopic tensile strain levels of 7%, 11%, and 14%. The fibers exhibited peculiar deformation behaviors that underscored their disparate strain transfer mechanisms depending on fiber size; nanofibers exhibited multiple necking phenomena, while microfiber deformation proceeded through localized dilatation that resulted in craze (and microcrack) formation. The copper nanocubes exhibited strong adhesion on both fibrous structures at all strain levels tested. Raman spectroscopy suggests chemisorption as the main adhesion mechanism. The interfacial adhesion energy of Cu on these treated PAN nanofibers was estimated using the Gibbs–Wulff–Kaischew shape theory giving a first order approximation of about 1 J/m². A lower bound for the system’s adhesion strength, based on limited measurements of interfacial separation between PAN and Cu using mechanically applied strain, is 0.48 J/m².

Surface Modification and Adhesion Mechanism of Isotactic Polypropylene with Low-Energy Electron-Beam Treatments

Recently, smaller-size electron-beam (EB) accelerators have offered EB irradiation in laboratory systems. Therefore, polymer surface treatments with low-energy EB have been developed in the past years. For high adhesion strength, low-energy EB treatment is also a promising method in comparison to plasma surface treatment. In the plasma treatment, the mechanism of the effect on the adhesion properties has been proved and the excess treatments led to the formation of a weak boundary layer and reduction of adhesion strength. In contrast, the low-energy EB possesses high penetration ability. In this work, we focused on the surface treatments of isotactic polypropylene (it.PP) with low-energy EB irradiation for adhesion. The dependence of adhesion strength on the absorbed dose of electron beam was evaluated, and the mechanism of electron beam on the adhesion properties was investigated from various perspectives of surface properties and morphology. Compared to that of plasma-treated it.PP, the adhesion strength of it.PP with electron-beam irradiation increased drastically. We proved that the radical was generated in the substrates after electron-beam treatments and would form covalent bonds between adhesives and substrates, which achieved higher adhesion than plasma treatments. In addition, the electron beam reached effectively a deep region from the top surface of the substrates and provided larger adhesion strength.

Preparation and Characterization of Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) Membranes for Biogas Upgrading

Asymmetric polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) membranes were fabricated by a non-solvent induced phase inversion method. Glycerin and silica nanoparticles were added into the polymer solution to investigate their effects on the material properties and gas separation performance of prepared membranes. The morphology and structure of PPSU membranes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the surface roughness of the selective layer was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the surface free energy was calculated based on the contact angle measurements by using various solvents. The gas separation performance of PPSU membranes was estimated by measuring the permeability of CO₂ and CH₄. The addition of glycerin as a nonsolvent into the polymer solution changed the cross-section structure from finger-like structure into sponge-like structure due to the delayed liquid-liquid demixing process, which was confirmed by SEM analysis. The incorporation of silica nanoparticles into PPSU membranes slightly increased the hydrophilicity, which was confirmed by water contact angle results. PPSU membrane fabricated from the polymer solution containing 10 wt.% glycerin showed the best CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of 3.86 and the CO₂ permeability of 1044.01 Barrer. Mixed matrix PPSU membrane containing 0.1 wt.% silica nanoparticles showed the CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of 3.16 and the CO₂ permeability of 1202.77 Barrer.

Sodium Hydroxide Treatment of Waste Rubber Crumb and Its Effects on Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Composites

This study investigated the optimum NaOH concentration treatment for rubber crumbs that improves adhesion between the polymer matrix and rubber filler in rubber polyester composites. The composite was prepared by mixing rubber crumbs from waste rubber gloves with unsaturated polyester matrix. Rubber crumbs were cryogenically ground from waste gloves and treated with 1%, 4%, 7%, and 10% NaOH (by volume). Treatment with 7% and 10% NaOH provides better wettability and hydrophilicity for rubber as it decreases the surface contact angle by approximately 27%. Higher concentration of NaOH intensively etched the rubber and made the surface rougher with more microcracks, providing a larger surface area for greater polyester coverage and holding the rubber firmly. It also induced more functional groups that increased the rubber surface energy and removed the hydrophobic layer on the rubber. These factors strengthened the interfacial rubber–polyester adhesion, as shown by the SEM micrograph of the tensile fracture which the rubber crumbs adhere well to the polyester matrix. The FTIR analysis of rubber treated with higher NaOH concentration showed a higher peak intensity, which demonstrated more polar groups were generated on the rubber surface. More polar groups created further connections to the polar groups in the polyester matrix, thereby enhancing adhesion between the rubber filler and the matrix.

Recent Advances in Tissue Adhesives for Clinical Medicine

Tissue adhesives have attracted more attention to the applications of non-invasive wound closure. The purpose of this review article is to summarize the recent progress of developing tissue adhesives, which may inspire researchers to develop more outstanding tissue adhesives. It begins with a brief introduction to the emerging potential use of tissue adhesives in the clinic. Next, several critical mechanisms for adhesion are discussed, including van der Waals forces, capillary forces, hydrogen bonding, static electric forces, and chemical bonds. This article further details the measurement methods of adhesion and highlights the different types of adhesive, including natural or biological, synthetic and semisynthetic, and biomimetic adhesives. Finally, this review article concludes with remarks on the challenges and future directions for design, fabrication, and application of tissue adhesives in the clinic. This review article has promising potential to provide novel creative design principles for the generation of future tissue adhesives.

Influence of Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure Time on Styrene-Ethylene-Butadiene-Styrene (SEBS) Copolymer

The effect of ultraviolet radiation on styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) has been studied at different exposures times in order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of ageing. The polymer materials were mechanically tested and then their surfaces were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the optical analysis of contact angle (OCA) was used to evaluate the surface energy (γ_s) and the yellowing index (YI) and attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used to observe structural and physical changes in aging SEBS. The results obtained for the SEBS, in relation to the duration of exposure, showed superficial changes that cause a decrease in the surface energy (γ_s) and, therefore, a decrease in surface roughness. This led to a reduction in mechanical performance, decreasing the tensile strength by about 50% for exposure times of around 200 h.

Thermal Welding by the Third Phase Between Polymers: A Review for Ultrasonic Weld Technology Developments

Ultrasonic welding (USW) is a promising method for the welds between dissimilar materials. Ultrasonic thermal welding by the third phase (TWTP) method was proposed in combination with the formation of a third phase, which was confirmed as an effective technology for polymer welding between the two dissimilar materials compared with the traditional USW. This review focused on the advances of applying the ultrasonic TWTP for thermoplastic materials. The research development on the ultrasonic TWTP of polycarbonate (PC) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polylactic acid (PLA) and polyformaldehyde (POM), and PLA and PMMA are summarized according to the preparation of the third phase, welded strength, morphologies of rupture surfaces, thermal stability, and others. The review aimed at providing guidance for using ultrasonic TWTP in polymers and a basic understanding of the welding mechanism, i.e., interdiffusion and molecular motion mechanisms between the phases.

Intrinsically heat-sealable polyimide films with atomic oxygen resistance: Synthesis and characterization

Intrinsically heat-sealable polyimides with atomic oxygen (AO) resistance (ARPIs) were synthesized from 2,3,3′,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (aODPA), 2,5-bis[(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]diphenylphosphine oxide (BADPO), and para-phenylenediamine (PDA). The effects of the molecular structure and diamine ratio were investigated on the properties of the ARPI, including mechanical property, thermal property, heat sealability, and AO resistance. Heat sealability and AO resistance were realized for the ARPI film by combining the asymmetry of the aODPA moiety and the passivated layer forming characteristic of diphenylphosphine phosphine oxide group. Meanwhile, the deficiency of low mechanical strength and thermal resistance, commonly existing in a completely BADPO-derived polyimide system, was remedied effectively by the higher reactivity and rigidity of PDA.

Fundamental Approaches to Predict Moisture Damage in Asphalt Mixtures: State-of-the-Art Review

Moisture susceptibility is still one of the primary causes of distress in flexible pavements, reducing the pavements’ durability. A very large number of tests are available to evaluate the susceptibility of a binder aggregate combination. Tests can be conducted on the asphalt mixture, either in a loose or compacted form, or on the individual components of an asphalt pavement. Apart from various mechanisms and models, fundamental concepts have been proposed to calculate the thermodynamic tendency of a binder aggregate combination to adhere and/or debond under wet conditions. The aim of this review is to summarize literature findings and conclusions, regarding these concepts as carried out in the CEDR project FunDBits. The applied test methods, the obtained results, and the validation or predictability of these fundamental approaches are discussed.

Polymers for Extrusion-Based 3D Printing of Pharmaceuticals: A Holistic Materials-Process Perspective

Three dimensional (3D) printing as an advanced manufacturing technology is progressing to be established in the pharmaceutical industry to overcome the traditional manufacturing regime of 'one size fits for all'. Using 3D printing, it is possible to design and develop complex dosage forms that can be suitable for tuning drug release. Polymers are the key materials that are necessary for 3D printing. Among all 3D printing processes, extrusion-based (both fused deposition modeling (FDM) and pressure-assisted microsyringe (PAM)) 3D printing is well researched for pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is important to understand which polymers are suitable for extrusion-based 3D printing of pharmaceuticals and how their properties, as well as the behavior of polymer-active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) combinations, impact the printing process. Especially, understanding the rheology of the polymer and API-polymer mixtures is necessary for successful 3D printing of dosage forms or printed structures. This review has summarized a holistic materials-process perspective for polymers on extrusion-based 3D printing. The main focus herein will be both FDM and PAM 3D printing processes. It elaborates the discussion on the comparison of 3D printing with the traditional direct compression process, the necessity of rheology, and the characterization techniques required for the printed structure, drug, and excipients. The current technological challenges, regulatory aspects, and the direction toward which the technology is moving, especially for personalized pharmaceuticals and multi-drug printing, are also briefly discussed.

Induced Hydrophilicity and In Vitro Preliminary Osteoblast Response of Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) Coatings Obtained via MAPLE Deposition and Subsequent Thermal Treatment

Recent advancements in biomedicine have focused on designing novel and stable interfaces that can drive a specific cellular response toward the requirements of medical devices or implants. Among these, in recent years, electroactive polymers (i.e., polyvinylidene fluoride or PVDF) have caught the attention within the biomedical applications sector, due to their insolubility, stability in biological media, in vitro and in vivo non-toxicity, or even piezoelectric properties. However, the main disadvantage of PVDF-based bio-interfaces is related to the absence of the functional groups on the fluoropolymer and their hydrophobic character leading to a deficiency of cell adhesion and proliferation. This work was aimed at obtaining hydrophilic functional PVDF polymer coatings by using, for the first time, the one-step, matrix-assisted pulsed evaporation (MAPLE) method, testing the need of a post-deposition thermal treatment and analyzing their preliminary capacity to support MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cell survival. As osteoblast cells are known to prefer rough surfaces, MAPLE deposition parameters were studied for obtaining coatings with roughness of tens to hundreds of nm, while maintaining the chemical properties similar to those of the pristine material. The in vitro studies indicated that all surfaces supported the survival of viable osteoblasts with active metabolisms, similar to the “control” sample, with no major differences regarding the thermally treated materials; this eliminates the need to use a secondary step for obtaining hydrophilic PVDF coatings. The physical-chemical characteristics of the thin films, along with the in vitro analyses, suggest that MAPLE is an adequate technique for fabricating PVDF thin films for further bio-applications.

Biomimetic catechol-based adhesive polymers for dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles in an aqueous medium

Biomimetic synthetic functional materials are valuable for a large number of practical applications with improved or tunable performance. In this paper, we present a series of mussel-inspired biomimetic catechol-containing copolymers synthesized from dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) and 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl acrylate (EEA) and abbreviated as poly(PDMA-PEEA). The successfully synthesized adhesive polymers allow adhering polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and were used for coating PTFE particles in organic solvent and re-dispersion in an aqueous medium. Adhesive polymer coated PTFE particles were efficiently used as a nanoreactor for generating silver (Ag) metal nanoparticles (NPs).

Insights on the Molecular Characteristics of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Monitored by Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

Sensing in molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) requires specific interactions of the imprinted polymer and the approaching template molecule. These interactions are affected by the morphology of the polymer surface, the affinity of the template molecule to the polymer network, and the steric approach. In this particular study, a template molecule, metronidazole, is studied with respect to the typically used methacrylic acid-based imprinted polymer using a combination of bulk and surface techniques. The resulting infrared (IR) spectra exhibited the presence of the template molecule in the polymer matrix as well as their efficient removal after washing. Dipping of the MIP according to what is expected of facile sensing in an aqueous solution of metronidazole did not show any presence of the template molecule in the bulk of the MIP, as observed by IR spectroscopy. However, using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, the CH aromatic stretch of the imidazole ring positioned at ∼3100 cm^-1 was observed at the polymer surface, including its inner pores or cavities, and at the buried polymer-fused silica interface after dipping. SFG studies have also shown the vibrational signatures of the polymer matrix, the presence of the template molecule on the surface, and the detection of residual template molecules after washing. Increasing the washing time to 50 min has proven to be less effective than increasing the washing cycles to three. However, after the third cycle, reorganization of the polymer matrix was evident as also the complete removal of the template molecule. The observed changes from the acquired images using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy show the structural morphologies of MIPs and a good distribution of the pores across the MIP surface. The study demonstrates the importance of combining both bulk and surface characterization in providing insight into the template molecule-polymer network interactions.

Recycling Waste Circuit Board Efficiently and Environmentally Friendly through Small-Molecule Assisted Dissolution

With the increasing amount of electronic waste (e-waste) generated globally, it is an enormous challenge to recycle printed circuit boards (PCBs) efficiently and environmentally friendly. However, conventional recycling technologies have low efficiency and require tough treatment such as high temperature (>200 °C) and high pressure. In this paper, a small-molecule assisted approach based on dynamic reaction was proposed to dissolve thermosetting polymers containing ester groups and recycle electronic components from PCBs. This effective approach operates below 200 °C and the polymer could be dissolved in a short time. It has a remarkable ability to recycle a wide range of commercial PCBs, including boards made of typical anhydride epoxy or polyester substrate. Besides, it is environmentally friendly as even the recycling solution could be reused multiple times. In addition, the wasted solution after recycling could be used for board bonding and damage repair. This work also demonstrates the advantage of using polymers containing ester groups as the PCB substrate in consideration of eco-friendly and efficient recycling.

Biocompatibility and adhesive strength properties of poly(methyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) as a function of acrylic acid content

Metals and metal alloys are widely used in medical devices that contact blood and/or tissue, and various coating materials for the metal parts have been proposed to improve surface properties such as biocompatibility. This study aims to understand the performance of new coating materials, copolymers of methyl acrylate and acrylic acid, in terms of their biocompatibility and adhesive strength to a metal surface. Blood compatibility was investigated through platelet and coagulation system responses. Cytocompatibility was studied in three cell-line types (endothelium, smooth muscle, and fibroblasts) in terms of cell viability and morphology; these tests showed that compatibility depended on the cell types and acrylic acid content of the copolymers. Because of their blood compatibility and adhesion strength, the methyl acrylate and acrylic acid copolymers containing 10–24 mol% acrylic acid were found to be excellent candidates as potential coating materials for devices contacting blood.

A green process for exfoliating electrode materials and simultaneously extracting electrolyte from spent lithium-ion batteries

Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has aroused extensive attentions with the expanding demand of electric vehicles. Two considerable challenges of LIBs recycling were separating electrode materials from metallic foils and reclaiming hazardous electrolyte. In the current study, an environmentally benign process was developed to recovery electrode materials and hazardous electrolyte. The main merits were that no strong acid or alkali was applied in the process, and the electrode materials were reclaimed in flaky form. A special complex aqueous peeling agent, namely exfoliating and extracting solution (AEES) was manufactured and applied in the process. The results indicated that cathode material could be exfoliated from Al foil by weakening the mechanical interlocking force and Coulomb force between cathode materials and foils. Ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) could be extracted from electrodes and separators and recovered via distillation. LiPF₆ could be precipitated from EC and PC and recovered via filtration. The conditions could be precisely controlled by optimizing the concentration of AEES. The recovery efficiencies of electrolyte, Al foil, Cu foil and electrode materials were 95.6%, 99.0%, 100% and near 100%, respectively. The process efficiently avoided infiltration of impurities into the electrode materials and is environmentally friendly for industrial application.

Demulsification-induced fast solidification: a novel strategy for the preparation of polymer films

We demonstrate a novel, simple and convenient demulsification-based method called demulsification-induced fast solidification (DIFS) to fabricate polymer films. Two dimensional films, three dimensional films, and free-standing polyvinyl acetate and polyurethane acrylate films were fabricated via electrochemical deposition using the DIFS method.

Determination of Influencing Factors on Interface Strength of Additively Manufactured Multi-Material Parts by Material Extrusion

Material composition complexity offered by material extrusion additive manufacturing offers new opportunities for function-driven part design. Nevertheless, since influencing factors on the interface strength between different materials are not well understood, this complexity is only used infrequently, in part, in design thereby restraining innovation. This paper proposes a systematical approach for identification and quantification of relevant adhesion phenomena that influence interface strength. For this reason, suited test specimen, which utilize the geometric freedom offered by additive manufacturing, are developed for roll peeling tests and peeling resistance of several combinations of rigid and flexible materials is determined. The results show that material choice especially regarding polarity as well as mechanical interlocking in regards to surface roughness and design features have high influence on the interface strength of multi-material parts manufactured by material extrusion. These results are explained through the relevant adhesion mechanisms that determine the interface strength in additively manufactured parts. Finally, criteria that predominantly affect interface strength are deduced and design recommendations for creating functional parts with ill-fitting material combinations are formulated.

Effect of Atmospheric Cold Plasma Treatment on the Adhesion and Tribological Properties of Polyamide 66 and Poly(Tetrafluoroethylene)

The surfaces of two engineering polymers including polyamide 66 (PA66) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were treated by diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharges in atmospheric air. We found that plasma treatment improved the adhesion of PA66 for either polymer/polymer or polymer/steel joints, however, it was selective for the investigated adhesive agents. For PTFE the adhesion was unaltered for plasma treatment regardless the type of used adhesive. Tribological properties were slightly improved for PA66, too. Both the friction coefficient and wear decreased. Significant changes, again, could not be detected for PTFE. The occurred variation in the adhesion and tribology was discussed on the basis of the occurred changes in surface chemistry, wettability and topography of the polymer surface.

Modification of Polyethylene by RF Plasma in Different/Mixture Gases

Herein, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films were treated using radio-frequency plasma discharge in the presence of air, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and their mixtures to introduce new chemical functionalities. The surface properties of treated LDPE were qualitatively and quantitatively characterized using various analytical and microscopic techniques. It was found that the optimum plasma treatment for LDPE occurs in the presence of air plasma at an exposure time of 120 s and 80 W of nominal power. The plasma formed layer had tendency to increasing thickness with increasing treatment time up to 60 s using air and oxygen and even more with inert gases. An aging study of plasma-treated LDPE samples stored in ambient air or water medium revealed the partial hydrophobic recovery.

Simulation Study of the Effects of Nanoporous Structures on Mechanical Properties at Polymer-Metal Interfaces

We investigated the effect of nanopores on the adhesion behavior at polymer-metal interfaces by molecular dynamics simulation. The effects of shear and extension behavior were examined. In the shear mode, samples with porous substrates showed larger shear forces than those with flat substrates. Meanwhile, the breaking strengths in the extension mode were almost the same for systems with flat and porous substrates. The similar behavior in the extension mode was ascribed to the formation of voids in the polymer layer, which was related to the increase of total system volume and not affected by the presence of pores. We also investigated the relationship between the mechanical properties of polymer-metal interfaces in the shear mode and pore size in detail. Even a very shallow pore with a depth of 0.5 nm produced a large shear force comparable to that of a pore with a depth of 2.0 nm. The shear force increased gradually as the pore diameter became wider. These simulation results revealed that the adhesion forces between polymers and rough metal surfaces are not simply related to the interface area but depend on the pulling mode, pore size, and polymer chain length in a complicated manner.

Evidence of chemical-bond formation at the interface between an epoxy polymer and an isocyanate primer

Sum frequency generation spectroscopy was applied to confirm the presence of a chemical bond at the joining interfaces, suggesting that MDI primers can serve as a chemical bridge for urethane adhesives.

Rapid, ultraviolet-induced, reversibly switchable wettability of superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic surfaces

Controllable wettability is important for a wide range of applications, including intelligent switching, self-cleaning and oil/water separation. In this work, rapid switching and extreme wettability changes upon ultraviolet (UV) illumination were investigated. TiO₂ nanoparticles were modified in solutions of trimethoxy(alkyl)silane, and the suspensions were sprayed on glass substrates. For such samples, the water contact angle (WCA) was shown to transition from a superhydrophobic (WCA ≈ 165°) to a superhydrophilic (WCA ≈ 0°) state within 10 min upon UV illumination and subsequent recovery to superhydrophobicity occurred after heat treatment. It was found that the changes in the trimethoxy(alkyl)silane upon UV illumination can explain the rapid decrease of the WCA from more than 165° to almost 0°. To further investigate the wettability transition, trimethoxy(alkyl)silane and Al₂O₃ nanoparticles (which are not photocatalytic) were mixed and spray-coated onto the glass substrates as the control samples. Then the unrecoverable change of trimethoxy(alkyl)silane under UV illumination can be confirmed. It was found that the presence of trimethoxy(alkyl)silane in the TiO₂-trimethoxy(alkyl)silane coating served to speed up the super-wettability transition time from superhydrophobicity to superhydrophilicity, but also limited the number of wettability recycle times. With this understanding, the effect of the trimethoxy(alkyl)silane concentration on the number of recycle cycles was investigated.

Improvement of Adhesion Properties of Polyamide 6 and Polyoxymethylene-Copolymer by Atmospheric Cold Plasma Treatment

A study is presented on cold plasma treatment of the surfaces of two engineering polymers, polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyoxymethylene (POM-C), by diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharges under atmospheric air conditions. We found that plasma treatment improved the adhesion of both polymers for either polymer/polymer or polymer/steel joints. However, the improved adhesion was selective for the investigated adhesive agents that were dissimilar for the two studied polymers. In addition, improvement was significantly higher for PA6 as compared to POM-C. The observed variation of the adhesion was discussed in terms of the changes in surface chemistry, wettability and topography of the polymer surface.

Adhesion between Hydrophobic Elastomer and Hydrogel through Hydrophilic Modification and Interfacial Segregation

Recent progress in the printing of soft materials has made it possible to fabricate soft stretchable devices for a range of engineering applications. These devices tend to be heterogeneous systems, and their reliability depends to a large extent on the integrity of the interfaces between the various materials in the system. Previous studies on the printing of hydrogels have highlighted the need to investigate the adhesion between extrusion printable dielectric elastomers and hydrogels. Here we consider polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a polyacrylamide hydrogel that contains lithium chloride and a nonionic rheological modifier. We show that the adhesion between oxygen plasma-treated PDMS and the hydrogel increases with time to reach a stable value of 15 J m^-2 after ∼6 days. During that time, the contact angle of water on the PDMS interface remains constant at ∼30°, suggesting that hydrophobic recovery of plasma-treated PDMS is suppressed by the presence of the hydrogel. It is further observed that a thin viscous layer develops at the interface between PDMS and hydrogel, which results in energy dissipation upon debonding and which allows full recovery of the adhesion after debonding and rejoining. This viscous layer develops only in the presence of the rheological modifier in the hydrogel and the hydrophilic surface treatment of the PDMS.

Environmentally Friendly Plasma Activation of Acrylonitrile–Butadiene–Styrene and Polydimethylsiloxane Surfaces to Improve Paint Adhesion

Generally, polymeric materials present an issue related to their low surface energy: low painting ability. The main aim of this work is to improve the adhesion between polymeric surfaces (polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS)) and paints (epoxy (EP), and polyurethane (PU)-based). In order to increase adhesion, hydrophilic modification of surfaces by atmospheric pressure plasma torch treatment (APPT) was proposed. Furthermore, it can permit dissimilar joints, i.e., ABS with a metal joined by a silicone (based PDMS), to be painted. The surface modifications were characterized by measurements of surface energy and roughness. In addition, the effectiveness of the pre-treatment on improving paint adhesion was confirmed by scratch, cross-cut, and adhesion tests. Results showed the possibility of coating both ABS and PDMS with a PU-based paint when treated with plasma. As a novel result, polymer and metal panels joined by silicone were able to be painted with the PU paint.

Recycling waste plastics in developing countries: Use of low-density polyethylene water sachets to form plastic bonded sand blocks

In many developing countries low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sheets, bags and water sachets are a major waste problem because local collection and recycling systems do not exist. As a result, LDPE has no value and is dumped causing aesthetic, environmental and public health issues. A relatively simple technology has been developed in the Cameroon that produces LDPE-bonded sand blocks and pavers. The application of this technology is an example of a community-driven waste management initiative that has potential to impact on the global plastics waste crisis because it can transform waste LDPE and other readily available types of plastics into a valuable local resource. In this research, waste LDPE water sachets have been melted and mixed with sand to form LDPE-bonded sand blocks. The effect of sand particle size and sand to plastic ratio on density, the compressive strength and water adsorption are reported. Optimum samples have been further characterised for flexural strength and thermal conductivity. LDPE-bonded sand is a strong, tough material with compressive strengths up to ∼27 MPa when produced under optimum processing conditions. The density and compressive strength increase as the particle size of the sand decreases. The potential for using this simple technology and the materials it produces to transform LDPE plastic waste management in developing countries is discussed.
