Abstract
Dietary phenols are antioxidants with diverse physiological functions that are beneficial for human health. The objective of this research work was to investigate antioxidant activity of p-coumaric acid (p-CA) using four in vitro methods, the protective effects against oxidative stress in PC12 cells, and hypolipidemic effects on High fat-diet (HFD) mice model. The p-CA exhibited moderate antioxidant activity in the selected in vitro assay. The highest chelating activity of p-CA at 50 μg/mL was found to be 52.22%. Pretreatment with p-CA significantly enhanced cell viability of PC12 cell and suppressed AAPH-induced intracellular ROS generation and AAPH-induced LDH release. The hypolipidemic effects of p-CA (100 mg/kg BW) was directly linked to the increased expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) by 2.0-fold, Glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) by 3.8-fold, Superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) by 1.6-fold, Heme oxygenase (HO-1) by 1.72-fold and NAD(P)H Quinone Dehydrogenase 1 (NQO-1) by 1.5-fold compared with HFD group. In addition to these effects, p-CA decreased total cholesterol and atherosclerosis index levels, and increased catalase (CAT) level in serum, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in liver as compared HFD group. Administration of p-CA also promoted the recovery of hyperlipidemia steatohepatitis in mice by ameliorating lipid peroxidation. These results suggested that p-CA is a potent antioxidant with potential therapeutic efficacy for treating hyperlipidemia symptoms.

Abstract
Background:The impact of the ubiquitous dietary phenolic compound p-coumaric acid on human breast cancer cells was assessed, through a multidisciplinary approach: Combined biological assays for cytotoxicity evaluation and biochemical profiling by Raman microspectroscopic analysis in cells. </P><P> Methods: Para-coumaric acid was shown to exert in vitro chemoprotective and antitumor activities, depending on the concentration and cell line probed: a significant anti-invasive ability was detected for the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cells, while a high pro-oxidant effect was found for the estrogen- dependent MCF-7 cells. A striking cell selectivity was obtained, with a more noticeable outcome on the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cell line.Results:The main impact on the cellular biochemical profile was verified to be on proteins and lipids, thus justifying the compound´s anti-invasive effect and chemoprotective ability.Conclusion:p-Coumaric acid was thus shown to be a promising chemoprotective/chemotherapeutic agent, particularly against the low prognosis triple-negative human breast adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
Medicinal plants are the backbone of modern medicine. In recent times, there is a great urge to discover nootropic medicinal plants to reverse cognitive dysfunction owing to their less adverse effects. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the inevitable loss of cognitive function, memory and language impairment, and behavioral disturbances, which turn into gradually more severe. Alzheimer's has no current cure, but symptomatic treatments are available and research continues. The number of patients suffering from AD continues to rise and today, there is a worldwide effort under study to find better ways to alleviate Alzheimer's pathogenesis. In this review, the nootropic and anti-Alzheimer's potentials of 6 medicinal plants (i.e., Centella asiatica, Clitoria ternatea, Crocus sativus, Terminalia chebula, Withania somnifera, and Asparagus racemosus) were explored through literature review. This appraisal focused on available information about neuroprotective and anti-Alzheimer's use of these plants and their respective bioactive compounds/metabolites and associated effects in animal models and consequences of its use in human as well as proposed molecular mechanisms. This review progresses our existing knowledge to reveal the promising linkage of traditional medicine to halt AD pathogenesis. This analysis also avowed a new insight to search the promising anti-Alzheimer's drugs.

Abstract
Leaves from three varieties of Ficus deltoidea, colloquially termed small- (FDS), medium- (FDM), and big-type leaf (FDB), were subjected to water extraction. The crude extracts were fractionated using water (WF) and ethyl acetate (EAF). The phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity of the fractions were investigated. The EAF had the highest phenolic and flavonoid content compared to the other FDS fractions. Conversely, the FDM crude extract had the highest phenolic and flavonoid content compared to the other FDM samples. Antioxidant activity was highest in the FDB crude extract. Ultra-high–performance liquid chromatography showed that two compounds, vitexin and coumaric acid, were present in the FDB crude extract. Additionally, the F. deltoidea leaves caused no signs of toxicity in a normal liver cell line. Our findings show that F. deltoidea varieties have excellent antioxidant activity with no cytotoxic effects on normal liver cells.

Abstract
Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the USA and Europe. Despite aggressive therapies, many tumors are resistant to current treatment protocols and epidemiological data suggest that diet is a major factor in the etiology of colon cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and the influence of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic (3,4-DHPAA), p-coumaric (p-CoA), vanillic (VA) and ferulic (FA) acids on cell viability, cell cycle progression, and rate of apoptosis in human colon adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29). The results showed that all compounds tested reduce cell viability in human colon cancer cells. 3,4-DHPAA promoted the highest effect antiproliferative with an increase in the percentage of cells in G0/G1 phase, accompanied by a reduction of cells in G2/M phase. Cell cycle analysis of VA and FA showed a decrease in the proportion of cells in G0/G1 phase (10.0 µM and 100.0 µM). p-CoA and FA acids increased the percentage of apoptotic cells and non-apoptotic cells. 3,4-DHPAA seems to be the substance with the greatest potential for in vivo studies, opening thus a series of perspectives on the use of these compounds in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

Abstract
Sustainable hydrocolloid-based films containing natural antioxidants, caffeic and p-coumaric acids at different concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w of polymers, were designed for packing fatty foods. Antioxidant activities and kinetics for all film formulations were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH), reducing power, and iron chelating ability. Release kinetics of the antioxidants from the films into a food simulant (96% ethanol) were analyzed. The intermolecular interactions between antioxidants and polymers chains were assessed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and related to the film properties. Antioxidant activity of pure compounds (powder), showed that caffeic acid (IC50 = 4 μg/mL) had higher activity than p-coumaric acid (IC50 = 33 μg/mL). Films containing caffeic acid exhibited higher antioxidant activity, reducing power, and iron chelating ability than p-coumaric acid films. The antioxidant activity is concentration dependent. However, the percentage of release (PR) in ethanol (96%) is not influenced by the initial concentration. PR is 88% ± 9% and 82% ± 5%, respectively, for caffeic and p-coumaric acids. Determination of the partition ( Kp) and the apparent diffusion ( D) coefficients allowed better characterization of the release kinetic mechanisms. The partition coefficients of caffeic acid ( Kp = 454) and p-coumaric acid ( Kp = 480) are not influenced by the initial concentration. The diffusion coefficients ( D) of caffeic and p-coumaric acids were of same order, but they slightly increased with the antioxidant concentration and probably related to antioxidant activity. FTIR displayed that amide B and amide-III are involved in the interactions occurring between polymer chains and antioxidants. However, interactions are of only low energy and unable to significantly affect the structure of films and consequently the release kinetics.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and inflammation are interlinked processes. The aim of the study was to perform a phytochemical analysis and to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanolic Mahonia aquifolium flower (MF), green fruit (MGF), and ripe fruit (MRF) extracts. Plant extract chemical composition was evaluated by HLPC. A DPPH test was used for the in vitro antioxidant activity. The in vivo antioxidant effects and the anti-inflammatory potential were tested on a rat turpentine oil-induced inflammation, by measuring serum nitric oxide (NOx) and TNF-alpha, total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant reactivity (TAR), oxidative stress index (OSI), 3-nitrothyrosine (3NT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total thiols (SH). Extracts were administrated orally in three dilutions (100%, 50%, and 25%) for seven days prior to inflammation. The effects were compared to diclofenac. The HPLC polyphenol and alkaloid analysis revealed chlorogenic acid as the most abundant compound. All extracts had a good in vitro antioxidant activity, decreased NOx, TOS, and 3NT, and increased SH. TNF-alpha was reduced, and TAR increased only by MF and MGF. MDA was not influenced. Our findings suggest that M. aquifolium has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that support the use in primary prevention of the inflammatory processes.

Abstract
p-Coumaric acid (p-CA), also known as 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, is a phenolic acid, which has been widely studied due to its beneficial effects against several diseases and its wide distribution in the plant kingdom. This phenolic compound can be found in the free form or conjugated with other molecules; therefore, its bioavailability and the pathways via which it is metabolized change according to its chemical structure. p-CA has potential pharmacological effects because it has high free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and antimicrobial activities, among other biological properties. It is therefore essential to choose the most appropriate and effective analytical method for qualitative and quantitative determination of p-CA in different matrices, such as plasma, urine, plant extracts, and drug delivery systems. The most-reported analytical method for this purpose is high-performance liquid chromatography, which is mostly coupled with some type of detectors, such as UV/Vis detector. However, other analytical techniques are also used to evaluate this compound. This review presents a summary of p-CA in terms of its chemical and pharmacokinetic properties, pharmacological effects, drug delivery systems, and the analytical methods described in the literature that are suitable for its quantification.

Abstract
Biologically and chemically useful hydrazinoimidazolines were evaluated as antioxidant and antihaemolytic agents. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•), galvinoxyl radical (GOR), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging assays, ferric ions reducing power assay, and ex vivo model of rat erythrocytes exposed to 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine)dihydrochloride (AAPH) or H2O2 were used. The most potent DPPH• scavengers proved to be hydrazinoimidazolines 3, 2, and 4, revealing excellent antiradical effects - superior or comparable to that of all antioxidant standards used. Moreover, these molecules showed strong NO neutralising potencies - better to that of ascorbic acid (AA) (3), 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox) (3 and 2), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (3 and 2), and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) (3, 2, and 4). Compound 4 was also effective in GOR scavenging. The excellent scavenger of GOR, NO, and H2O2 proved to be structure 5, with the potency superior or comparable to the majority of antioxidant standards used. In turn, compound 9 was effective in H2O2 and GOR neutralisation. All hydrazinoimidazolines revealed the reducing power that is higher than BHT. Moreover, the protective effects of most test compounds on oxidatively stressed erythrocytes were observed. Some structure-activity relationships were disclosed. A significance of the primary hydrazino group on antioxidant effects was confirmed. The most likely DPPH• and GOR scavenging mechanisms for test compounds were propound. Among all the investigated molecules, hydrazinoimidazolines 5, 3, 2, 4, and 9, due to their excellent or good antiradical activities, can represent promising antioxidant candidates with prospective utility for prevention of diseases related to reactive oxygen/nitrogen species.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) may cause acute kidney disease (AKD) by mediating the oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of parenchymal cells. The extract of Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) is used as a traditional herbal medicine as it exhibits anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, the current study investigated the therapeutic effect and the underlying mechanism of RVS on IRI-induced AKD in vivo and in vitro. The current study assessed the effects of RVS on a mouse model of renal IRI and in hypoxic human renal tubular epithelial HK-2 cells. The results demonstrated that the IRI-induced elevation of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine and lactate dehydrogenase was significantly attenuated by the intraoral administration of RVS (20 mg/kg/day) for 14 days prior to surgery. It was demonstrated that IRI surgery induced histological damage and cellular apoptosis in renal parenchyma, which were attenuated by pretreatment with RVS. Furthermore, in HK-2 cells incubated with 300 µM CoCl2 to induce chemical hypoxia, it was demonstrated that RVS treatment significantly inhibited cell death and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, RVS treatment upregulated the levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, including heme oxygenase-1 and catalase, as well as their upstream regulator nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, in HK-2 cells. Taken together, these results suggested that the intraoral administration of RVS induces a therapeutic effect on IRI-induced AKD. These effects are at least partly due to the attenuation of ROS production via upregulation of the antioxidant defense system in renal tubular cells.

Abstract
4-[(4′-(Tert-butyl)phenoxy)phenoxy]phthalonitrile 1 has been prepared by the reaction of 4-(4-nitrophenoxy)phthalonitrile with 4-tertiarylbutylphenole. 4-((4′-tert-butyl)phenoxy)phenoxy tetrasubstituted metal-free 2, zinc(II) 3 and cobalt(II) 4 phthalocyanines have been prepared by tetramerization of compound 1. The synthesized phthalocyanines showed high solubility in common organic solvents such as CHCl[Formula: see text]. All compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and [Formula: see text]H-NMR, [Formula: see text]C-NMR, UV-vis, IR spectra. Aggregation behaviors of these compounds have been investigated in different solvents (CHCl[Formula: see text], THF, DMF and DMSO) and different concentrations in CHCl[Formula: see text]. The in vitro antioxidant activities of phthalocyanine compounds 2, 3 and 4 were evaluated in a series of assays involving DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Antioxidant activity of compound 2was found to be higher than that of compounds 3 and 4.

Abstract
CONTEXT Betula pendula Roth (Betulaceae) exhibits many pharmacological activities in humans including anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. However, the antioxidant activity of BP towards lipid degradation has not been fully determined. OBJECTIVE The BP ethanol and methanol extracts were evaluated to determine antioxidant activity by an in vitro method and lyophilized extract of BP was added to beef patties to study oxidative stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS Antioxidant activities of extracts of BP were determined by measuring scavenging radical activity against methoxy radical generated by Fenton reaction 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (TEAC) radical cation, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The lipid deterioration in beef patties containing 0.1% and 0.3% (w/w) of lyophilized extract of BP stored in 80:20 (v/v) O2:CO2 modified atmosphere (MAP) at 4 °C for 10 days was determined using thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), % metmyoglobin and colour value. RESULTS The BP methanol extract revealed the presence of catechin, myricetin, quercetin, naringenin, and p-coumaric acid. The BP ethanol (50% w/w) extract showed scavenging activity in TEAC, ORAC and FRAP assays with values of 1.45, 2.81, 1.52 mmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g DW, respectively. Reductions in lipid oxidation were found in samples treated with lyophilized BP extract (0.1% and 0.3% w/w) as manifested by the changes of colour and metmyoglobin concentration. A preliminary study film with BP showed retard degradation of lipid in muscle food. CONCLUSION The present results indicated that the BP extracts can be used as natural food antioxidants.

Abstract
Evaluation of phenolic contents and their in vitro bioactivities of six diverse cultivars of foxtail and little millets revealed that their total phenolic content ranged from 19.42 to 24.12 µmol ferulic acid equivalents/g. The soluble fraction accounted for more than 80% of the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Ferulic, caffeic and sinapic acids were the predominant phenolic acids, and luteolin and kaempferol were major flavonoids in the soluble fractions of millets. However, ferulic and p-coumaric acids were abundant in the bound fractions. Millet cultivars exhibited relevant changes in antioxidant activities in different mechanisms. Little millet cultivars showed superior inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase than foxtail millet cultivars. The soluble and bound fractions of CO7 cultivar of foxtail millet (IC50, 22.37 and 57.26 µg/ml) and CO4 cultivar of little millet (IC50, 18.97 and 55.69 µg/ml) displayed strong inhibition towards α-glucosidase. These results suggest the potential application of underutilized millets as functional food ingredients for regulating postprandial hyperglycemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Two important classes of hydrazide-containing fused azaisocytosines were evaluated as possible antioxidants and characterised by UV spectroscopy. METHODS 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging potencies and reducing power of molecules were evaluated. RESULTS The strongest DPPH scavengers were found to be 9, showing the potency superior to that of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate (PG) and 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox) and comparable to that of ascorbic acid (AA), and 6, revealing the antioxidant potency superior to that of BHA, BHT, PG and Trolox. In turn, 3 and 9 were the most promising NO scavengers, exhibiting the potency superior to that of BHA, BHT (3 and 9) and AA (3). The most potent H2O2 scavengers proved to be 10 and 9 showing similar or even better neutralising potency than that of Trolox, BHT and BHA. Simultaneously, the majority of hydrazides revealed higher ferric reducing abilities than that of AA and BHT. Some structure-activity relationships were explored. A possible mechanism for the DPPH radical scavenging ability of hydrazide-containing molecules was proposed. DISCUSSION Hydrazides 3, 6 and 9 with an antioxidant potential better or comparable to that of the well-known antioxidants are proposed as new antioxidant candidates.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an important trace element for the organism survival, which ensures the normal functioning of different biosystems. However, excessive levels of this heavy metal are responsible for profound physiological alterations including the central nervous system. Numerous findings sustain the involvement of heavy metals, as an environmental risk factor such as copper (Cu), in the neuropathology of Parkinson's disease (PD) which is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that principally affects the motor system. The classic and evident symptoms of PD namely rigidity, tardiness of movement, and difficulty with walking, result from progressive dopaminergic neurons death within substantia nigra. Whereas, few pharmacological trials have shown a beneficial role against Cu neurotoxicity, Aloe arborescens is one of the powerful medicinal plants with an array of therapeutic effects. Thus, we aimed through the present study, to evaluate the impact of acute Cu intoxication (10μg/g B.W. i.p) for 3days on the dopaminergic system and locomotor performance, together with the possible restorative effect of oral administration of aqueous extract of Aloe arborescens gel (AEAAG) (200mg/kg B.W.). By means of immunohistochemistry, we noted, in the Cu intoxicated rats, a significant loss of TH (tyrosine hydroxylase) expression within substantia nigra compacta (SNc), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the subsequent striatal outputs, those alterations were correlated to behavioral abnormalities such as a severe drop of locomotor performance. While AEAAG administration to Cu intoxicated rats showed a noticeable beneficial effect; this potential was featured by a complete recovery of the TH expression and locomotor behavior deficiencies in the intoxicated rats. The present investigation have brought, on the one hand, an experimental evidence of an altered dopaminergic innervations following Cu intoxication and on the other hand, a new pharmacological property of Aloe arborescens that may be used as a neuroprotective plant for neurodegenerative disorders, such as PD, touching the dopaminergic system trigged by heavy metals.

Abstract
Durum wheat plants are extremely sensitive to drought and salinity during seedling and early development stages. Their responses to stresses have been extensively studied to provide new metabolic targets and improving the tolerance to adverse environments. Most of these studies have been performed in growth chambers under low light [300-350 µmol m-2 s-1 photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), LL]. However, in nature plants have to face frequent fluctuations of light intensities that often exceed their photosynthetic capacity (900-2000 µmol m-2 s-1 ). In this study we investigated the physiological and metabolic changes potentially involved in osmotic adjustment and antioxidant defense in durum wheat seedlings under high light (HL) and salinity. The combined application of the two stresses decreased the water potential and stomatal conductance without reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the plants. Glycine betaine (GB) synthesis was inhibited, proline and glutamate content decreased, while γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), amides and minor amino acids increased. The expression level and enzymatic activities of Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase, asparagine synthetase and glutamate decarboxylase, as well as other enzymatic activities of nitrogen and carbon metabolism, were analyzed. Antioxidant enzymes and metabolites were also considered. The results showed that the complex interplay seen in durum wheat plants under salinity at LL was simplified: GB and antioxidants did not play a main role. On the contrary, the fine tuning of few specific primary metabolites (GABA, amides, minor amino acids and hexoses) remodeled metabolism and defense processes, playing a key role in the response to simultaneous stresses.

Abstract
Fourier transform infrared with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and Raman spectroscopy combined with partial least square regression (PLSR) were applied for the prediction of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in honey. Standards of catechin, syringic, vanillic, and chlorogenic acids were used for the identification and quantification of the individual phenolic compounds in six honey varieties using HPLC-DAD. Total antioxidant activity (TAC) and ferrous chelating capacity were measured spectrophotometrically. For the establishment of PLSR model, Raman spectra with Savitzky-Golay smoothing in wavenumber region 1500-400cm-1 was used while for FTIR-ATR the wavenumber regions of 1800-700 and 3000-2800cm-1 with multiplicative scattering correction (MSC) and Savitzky-Golay smoothing were used. The determination coefficients (R2) were ranged from 0.9272 to 0.9992 for Raman while from 0.9461 to 0.9988 for FTIT-ART. The FTIR-ATR and Raman demonstrated to be simple, rapid and nondestructive methods to quantify phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities in honey.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE While rice is one of the most important global staple food sources its extracts have found many uses as the bases of herbal remedies. Rice extracts contain high levels of phenolic compounds which are known to be bioactive, some of which show cutaneous benefits and activity towards skin disorders. This study highlights an assessment of the cellular activity and clinical efficacy of rice panicle extract, providing necessary information relevant to the development of new cosmetic products. MATERIALS AND METHODS Jasmine rice panicle extract was standardized, and the level of phenolics present was determined. In vitro anti-aging, and extract activity towards melanogenesis was conducted in B16F10 melanoma cells, and antioxidant activity was assessed in human skin fibroblast cell cultures. Topical product creams containing the extract were developed, and skin irritation testing using a single application closed patch test method was done using 20 Thai volunteers. Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy evaluation was undertaken in 24 volunteers over an 84d period, with the results monitored by Corneometer® CM 825, Cutometer® MPA 580, Mexameter® MX 18 and Visioscan® VC 98. RESULTS Jasmine rice panicle extract was shown to have a high content of p-coumaric, ferulic and caffeic acids, and was not cytotoxic to the cell lines used in this study. Cells treated with extract suppressed melanogenesis via tyrosinase and TRP-2 inhibitory effects, which protect the cell from oxidative stress at doses of 0.1mg/ml or lower. The jasmine rice panicle preparations (0.1-0.2%) were safe (MII=0), and significantly (p<0.05) increased skin hydration levels relative to baseline. Skin lightening, and anti-wrinkle effects related to skin firmness and smoothness were observed, in addition to a reduction in skin wrinkling. Improvements in skin biophysics of both 0.1% and 0.2% extracts were showed to be comparable (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Jasmine rice panicle extract having high levels of phenolics shows cutaneous benefits as the basis for skin aging treatments, as indicated through in vitro cytotoxicity assessments and skin testing in human subjects.

Abstract
Background Silver fir trunk extract (SFTE) is a complex mixture of antioxidative polyphenols (lignans and phenolic acids) from the trunks of silver fir trees (Abies alba, lignum). In our previous study, we have shown that SFTE exerts strong antioxidative and protective effects against atherogenic, diet-induced arterial wall damage. Objective The aim of the present study was to test the potential protective effects of SFTE and its compounds, two phenolic acids (p-coumaric and protocatechuic acids) in ischemia–reperfusion injury of isolated rat hearts. Design Isolated hearts of Wistar rats aged 4–8 weeks were exposed to perfusion, ischemia, and reperfusion periods. The experiments were performed using the following five groups: control, SFTE (10 µg/L), SFTE (100 µg/L), protocatechuic acid, and p-coumaric. Aortas were isolated to measure vascular responses in the presence of Nω-Nitro-L-arginine. Results SFTE dose-dependently reduced ischemic-reperfusion heart damage, which was indicated as the decrease in the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release rate and arrhythmias duration by 80% and an increase in coronary flow rate during the reperfusion period. Two tested compounds (p-coumaric and protocatechuic acids) acted less cardioprotective, since they decreased the duration of arrhythmias only by 40 and 45%, respectively, and did not decrease LDH release rates during the reperfusion period. Only p-coumaric acid increased coronary flow rates, whereas protocatechuic acid did not. Conclusions We conclude that the SFTE exerted the strongest cardioprotective effect, whereas its constituents (the p-coumaric and protocatechuic acids) were less effective in inducing cardioprotection.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tyrosinase inhibitory capacity of Populus nigra buds absolute (PBA) and compare it to kojic acid (KA), controversial reference tyrosinase inhibitor. Populus nigra buds were extracted with hexane and ethanol to obtain PBA. The inhibitory effect of this absolute was first tested on the mushroom Agaricus bisporus tyrosinase. Then the depigmenting potential of PBA was tested on B16F10 murine melanocytes by assaying the activity of tyrosinase and melanin content. Consecutively, a microscopic analysis of intracellular melanin granules was performed. Finally, melanised reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) were used to assess the lightening potential activity of this PBA on human skin. Results show that PBA inhibits A. bisporus tyrosinase (IC50=77±8ppm) and inhibits melanocytes B16F10 tyrosinase (IC50=27±1ppm). PBA decreases intracellular melanin levels, with 50% loss at 39±9ppm. Finally, PBA at 1000ppm lightens RHE and decreases their melanin content of 20%. PBA is a strong inhibitor of tyrosinase and reduces melanogenesis in melanocytes B16F10. Thus, PBA has potential applications in skin-lightening cosmetics.

Abstract
The capacity of eleven nicotine alkaloids to reduce oxidative stress was investigated. In order to provide a structure-activity relationships analysis, new nicotine derivatives with a substituent introduced into the pyrrolidine ring were synthesized and investigated together with nicotine and its known analogs. All newly synthesized compounds were characterized by (1)H, (13)C NMR and EI-MS technique. The antioxidant properties of nicotine, its known analogs and newly produced derivatives, were evaluated by various antioxidant assays such 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH(•)) scavenging, ferrous ions (Fe(2+)) chelating activity and total reducing ability determination by Fe(3+) → Fe(2+) transformation assay. The protective effects of all compounds tested against 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH) and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH)-induced oxidative haemolysis and morphological injury of human erythrocytes, were estimated in vitro. The results showed that nicotine alkaloids exhibited various antiradical efficacy and antioxidant activity in a structure- and a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the capacity of nicotine alkaloids to protect erythrocytes from AAPH- and t-BuOOH-induced oxidative haemolysis, was dependent on its incubation time with cells. Our findings showed that chemical and biological investigations conducted simultaneously can provide comprehensive knowledge concerning the antioxidant potential of nicotine alkaloids. This knowledge can be helpful in better understanding the properties of nicotine alkaloids under oxidative stress conditions.

Abstract
The beneficial biological effects of cinnamic acid derivatives and the lack of studies on the antioxidant activity and bioavailability of cinnamic esters from carnauba wax, diesters were extracted from carnauba wax powder. Their structural, physical and morphological characteristics, antioxidant activity and in vitro bioaccessibility were measured. p-Methoxycinnamic diester (PCO-C) was identified, which has a crystalline, apolar structure and exhibited significant antioxidant activity (107.27 ± 3.92 μM Trolox/g of dry weight) before and after simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and 32.46% bioaccessibility. In human cells, PCO-C (250 μg/mL) inhibited the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, with an effect similar to that of Trolox (80 μM). Thermogravimetric analysis showed that PCO-C had high thermal stability and high UV absorption between 250 and 350 nm. These results indicate that this compound is promising as an antioxidant for pharmaceutical and food industry applications, such as the development of active packaging and functional foods.

Abstract
In this study, the antioxidant activity of the Convolvulus arvensis Linn (CA) ethanol extract has been evaluated by different ways. The antioxidant activity of the extract assessed by 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical cation, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) was 1.62 mmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/g DW, 1.71 mmol TE/g DW and 2.11 mmol TE/g DW, respectively. CA ethanol extract exhibited scavenging activity against the methoxy radical initiated by the Fenton reaction and measured by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The antioxidant effects of lyophilised CA measured in beef patties containing 0.1% and 0.3% (w/w) CA stored in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) (80% O₂ and 20% CO₂) was determined. A preliminary study of gelatine based film containing CA showed a strong antioxidant effect in preventing the degradation of lipid in muscle food. Thus, the present results indicate that CA extract can be used as a natural food antioxidant.

Abstract
The global forestry industry after experiencing a market downturn during the past decade has now aimed its vision towards the integrated biorefinery. New business models and strategies are constantly being explored to re-invent the global wood and pulp/paper industry through sustainable resource exploitation. The goal is to produce diversified, innovative and revenue generating product lines using on-site bioresources (wood and tree residues). The most popular product lines are generally produced from wood fibers (biofuels, pulp/paper, biomaterials, and bio/chemicals). However, the bark and other tree residues like foliage that constitute forest wastes, still remain largely an underexploited resource from which extractives and phytochemicals can be harnessed as by-products (biopharmaceuticals, food additives and nutraceuticals, biopesticides, cosmetics). Commercially, Populus (poplar) tree species including hybrid varieties are cultivated as a fast growing bioenergy crop, but can also be utilized to produce bio-based chemicals. This review identifies and underlines the potential of natural products (phytochemicals) from Populus species that could lead to new business ventures in biorefineries and contribute to the bioeconomy. In brief, this review highlights the importance of by-products/co-products in forest industries, methods that can be employed to extract and purify poplar phytochemicals, the potential pharmaceutical and other uses of >160 phytochemicals identified from poplar species - their chemical structures, properties and bioactivities, the challenges and limitations of utilizing poplar phytochemicals, and potential commercial opportunities. Finally, the overall discussion and conclusion are made considering the recent biotechnological advances in phytochemical research to indicate the areas for future commercial applications from poplar tree species.

Abstract
This work is a continuation of research on a correlation between the molecular structure and electronic charge distribution of phenolic compounds and their biological activity. The influence of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium cations on the electronic system of trans o-coumaric (2-hydroxy-cinnamic) acid was studied. We investigated the relationship between the molecular structure of the tested compounds and their antimicrobial activity. Complementary molecular spectroscopic techniques such as infrared (FT-IR), Raman (FT-Raman), ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H- and 13C-NMR) were applied. Structures of the molecules were optimized and their structural characteristics were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) using the B3LYP method with 6-311++G** as a basis set. Geometric and magnetic aromaticity indices, atomic charges, dipole moments and energies were also calculated. Theoretical parameters were compared to the experimental characteristics of investigated compounds. Correlations between certain vibrational bands and some metal parameters, such as electronegativity, ionization energy, atomic and ionic radius, were found. The microbial activity of studied compounds was tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Candida albicans.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA, C14H6O8) is a natural dietary polyphenol whose benefits in a variety of diseases shown in epidemiological and experimental studies involve anti-inflammation, anti-proliferation, anti-angiogenesis, anticarcinogenesis and anti-oxidation properties. In vitro radical scavenging and antioxidant capacity of EA were clarified using different analytical methodologies such as total antioxidant activity determination by ferric thiocyanate, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH) scavenging, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity and superoxide anion radical scavenging, ferrous ions (Fe2+) chelating activity and ferric ions (Fe3+) reducing ability. EA inhibited 71.2% lipid peroxidation of a linoleic acid emulsion at 45 μg/mL concentration. On the other hand, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid displayed 69.8%, 66.8%, 64.5% and 59.7% inhibition on the peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion at the same concentration, respectively. In addition, EA had an effective DPPH• scavenging, ABTS+ scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, ferric ions (Fe3+) reducing power and ferrous ions (Fe2+) chelating activities. Also, those various antioxidant activities were compared to BHA, BHT, α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid as references antioxidant compounds. These results suggested that EA can be used in the pharmacological, food industry and medicine because of these properties.

Abstract
Delonix elata L. (Ceasalpinaceae), is widely used by the traditional medical practitioners of Karnataka, India, to cure jaundice, and bronchial and rheumatic problems. The objective of this study was to screen the in vitro antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of the stem bark extracts against CCl4-induced liver damage in rats. Among different stem bark extracts tested, the ethanol extract (DSE) has shown significant in vitro antioxidant property in radicals scavenging, metal chelating, and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. HPLC analysis of the DSE revealed the presence of known antioxidant molecules, namely, gallic acid, ellagic acid, coumaric acid, quercetin, and rutin. Bioassay-guided fractionation of DSE has resulted in the isolation and characterization of quercetin. DSE and quercetin have shown significant prophylactic effects by restoring the liver function markers (AST, ALT, ALP, serum bilirubin, and total protein) and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST). These results were proved to be hepatoprotective at par with silymarin and well supported by the histological observations of liver sections with distinct hepatic cells, and mild degree of fatty change and necrosis. The results indicated that the DSE and quercetin were significant for prophylactic activity against CCl4-induced liver damage in rats. This activity could be attributed to the antioxidant constituents in the DSE and hence justified the ethnomedicinal claims.
