Progress in Conductive Polyaniline-Based Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Conductive Polymeric-Based Electroactive Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications: Current Progress and Challenges from Biomaterials and Manufacturing Perspectives

The practice of combining external stimulation therapy alongside stimuli-responsive bio-scaffolds has shown massive potential for tissue engineering applications. One promising example is the combination of electrical stimulation (ES) and electroactive scaffolds because ES could enhance cell adhesion and proliferation as well as modulating cellular specialization. Even though electroactive scaffolds have the potential to revolutionize the field of tissue engineering due to their ability to distribute ES directly to the target tissues, the development of effective electroactive scaffolds with specific properties remains a major issue in their practical uses. Conductive polymers (CPs) offer ease of modification that allows for tailoring the scaffold's various properties, making them an attractive option for conductive component in electroactive scaffolds. This review provides an up-to-date narrative of the progress of CPs-based electroactive scaffolds and the challenge of their use in various tissue engineering applications from biomaterials perspectives. The general issues with CP-based scaffolds relevant to its application as electroactive scaffolds were discussed, followed by a more specific discussion in their applications for specific tissues, including bone, nerve, skin, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle scaffolds. Furthermore, this review also highlighted the importance of the manufacturing process relative to the scaffold's performance, with particular emphasis on additive manufacturing, and various strategies to overcome the CPs' limitations in the development of electroactive scaffolds.

Recent Advances on Conducting Polymers Based Nanogenerators for Energy Harvesting

With the rapid growth of numerous portable electronics, it is critical to develop high-performance, lightweight, and environmentally sustainable energy generation and power supply systems. The flexible nanogenerators, including piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), are currently viable candidates for combination with personal devices and wireless sensors to achieve sustained energy for long-term working circumstances due to their great mechanical qualities, superior environmental adaptability, and outstanding energy-harvesting performance. Conductive materials for electrode as the critical component in nanogenerators, have been intensively investigated to optimize their performance and avoid high-cost and time-consuming manufacture processing. Recently, because of their low cost, large-scale production, simple synthesis procedures, and controlled electrical conductivity, conducting polymers (CPs) have been utilized in a wide range of scientific domains. CPs have also become increasingly significant in nanogenerators. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on CP-based PENG and TENG for biomechanical energy harvesting. A thorough overview of recent advancements and development of CP-based nanogenerators with various configurations are presented and prospects of scientific and technological challenges from performance to potential applications are discussed.

Polyaniline-Conjugated Boron Nitride Nanoparticles Exhibiting Potent Effects against Pathogenic Brain-Eating Amoebae

Free-living amoebae include Acanthamoeba castellanii and Naegleria fowleri that are opportunistic protozoa responsible for life-threatening central nervous system infections with mortality rates over 90%. The rising number of cases and high mortality rates are indicative of the critical unmet need for the development of efficient drugs in order to avert future deaths. In this study, we assess the anti-amoebic capacity of a conducting polymer nanocomposite comprising polyaniline (PANI) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) against A. castellanii and N. fowleri. We observed significant amoebicidal and cysticidal effects using 100 μg/mL PANI/hBN (P < 0.05). Further, the nanocomposite demonstrated negligible cytotoxicity toward HaCaT and primary human corneal epithelial cells (pHCECs). In evaluating the mode of inhibition of A. castellanii due to treatment with PANI/hBN, increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured and scanning microscopy visualized the formation of pores in the amoebae. Overall, this study is suggestive of the potential of the PANI/hBN nanocomposite as a promising therapy for amoeba infections.

Near infrared photothermal conversion materials: mechanism, preparation, and photothermal cancer therapy applications

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has been widely applied in cancer therapy as a result of its non-invasive, localized treatment and good therapeutic effect. In general, the final therapeutic effect of PTT mainly depends on the photothermal materials, which can be further considered to be determined by the photothermal conversion efficiency, biocompatibility, and photothermal stability of photothermal materials. In this review, photothermal materials including inorganic materials, organic materials, and organic-inorganic composite materials in recent years have been summarized in terms of the mechanism, preparation, and cancer therapy applications. In the end, the perspectives and obstacles in their further development are overviewed.

Aniline-co-o-anthranilic Acid Copolymer-Chitosan/Ag@AgCl Nanohybrid as a Carrier for (E)-N'-(Pyridin-2-ylmethylene) Hydrazinecarbothiohydrazide Release and Antimicrobial Activity

Poly(aniline-co-o-anthranilic acid)-chitosan/silver@silver chloride (PAAN-CS/Ag@AgCl) nanohybrids were synthesized using different ratios of Ag@AgCl through a facile one-step process. The presence of CS led to the formation of the nanohybrid structure and prevented the aggregation of the copolymer efficiently. The synthesized nanohybrids were fully characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. (E)-N'-(Pyridin-2-ylmethylene) hydrazinecarbothiohydrazide I was prepared using thiosemicarbazide and confirmed by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, and FTIR analyses. Loading of the azine derivative I using various concentrations at different pH values onto the nanohybrid was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium isotherm, and the adsorption followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. A pseudo-second-order model was used to describe the kinetic data. A PAAN-CS/Ag@AgCl nanohybrid loaded with azine I interestingly showed efficient antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus more than the azine derivative I. The release of azine I at different pH values (2-7.4) was investigated and the kinetics of release were studied using zero-order, first-order, second-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell, and Korsmeyer-Peppas equations.

PANI-Based Wearable Electrochemical Sensor for pH Sweat Monitoring

Nowadays, we are assisting in the exceptional growth in research relating to the development of wearable devices for sweat analysis. Sweat is a biofluid that contains useful health information and allows a non-invasive, continuous and comfortable collection. For this reason, it is an excellent biofluid for the detection of different analytes. In this work, electrochemical sensors based on polyaniline thin films deposited on the flexible substrate polyethylene terephthalate coated with indium tin oxide were studied. Polyaniline thin films were abstained by the potentiostatic deposition technique, applying a potential of +2 V vs. SCE for 90 s. To improve the sensor performance, the electronic substrate was modified with reduced graphene oxide, obtained at a constant potential of −0.8 V vs. SCE for 200 s, and then polyaniline thin films were electrodeposited on top of the as-deposited substrate. All samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, static contact angle and FT-IR/ATR analysis to correlate the physical-chemical features with the performance of the sensors. The obtained electrodes were tested as pH sensors in the range from 2 to 8, showing good behavior, with a sensitivity of 62.3 mV/pH, very close to a Nernstian response, and a reproducibility of 3.8%. Interference tests, in the presence of competing ions, aimed to verify the selectivity, were also performed. Finally, a real sweat sample was collected, and the sweat pH was quantified with both the proposed sensor and a commercial pH meter, showing an excellent concordance.

Stimuli-responsive transdermal microneedle patches

Microneedle (MN) patches consisting of miniature needles have emerged as a promising tool to perforate the stratum corneum and translocate biomolecules into the dermis in a minimally invasive manner. Stimuli-responsive MN patches represent emerging drug delivery systems that release cargos on-demand as a response to internal or external triggers. In this review, a variety of stimuli-responsive MN patches for controlled drug release are introduced, covering the mechanisms of action toward different indications. Future opportunities and challenges with respect to clinical translation are also discussed.

Preparations, Properties, and Applications of Polyaniline and Polyaniline Thin Films-A Review

Polyaniline (PANI) is a famous conductive polymer, and it has received tremendous consideration from researchers in the field of nanotechnology for the improvement of sensors, optoelectronic devices, and photonic devices. PANI is doped easily by different acids and dopants because of its easy synthesis and remarkable environmental stability. This review focuses on different preparation processes of PANI thin film by chemical and physical methods. Several features of PANI thin films, such as their magnetic, redox, and antioxidant, anti-corrosion, and electrical and sensing properties, are discussed in this review. PANI is a highly conductive polymer. Given its unique properties, easy synthesis, low cost, and high environmental stability in various applications such as electronics, drugs, and anti-corrosion materials, it has attracted extensive attention. The most important PANI applications are briefly reviewed at the end of this review.

Development strategies of conducting polymer-based electrochemical biosensors for virus biomarkers: Potential for rapid COVID-19 detection

Rapid, accurate, portable, and large-scale diagnostic technologies for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) are crucial for controlling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The current standard technologies, i.e., reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, serological assays, and computed tomography (CT) exhibit practical limitations and challenges in case of massive and rapid testing. Biosensors, particularly electrochemical conducting polymer (CP)-based biosensors, are considered as potential alternatives owing to their large advantages such as high selectivity and sensitivity, rapid detection, low cost, simplicity, flexibility, long self-life, and ease of use. Therefore, CP-based biosensors can serve as multisensors, mobile biosensors, and wearable biosensors, facilitating the development of point-of-care (POC) systems and home-use biosensors for COVID-19 detection. However, the application of these biosensors for COVID-19 entails several challenges related to their degradation, low crystallinity, charge transport properties, and weak interaction with biomarkers. To overcome these problems, this study provides scientific evidence for the potential applications of CP-based electrochemical biosensors in COVID-19 detection based on their applications for the detection of various biomarkers such as DNA/RNA, proteins, whole viruses, and antigens. We then propose promising strategies for the development of CP-based electrochemical biosensors for COVID-19 detection.

Enhancing Cellular Infiltration on Fluffy Polyaniline-Based Electrospun Nanofibers

Despite the unique properties of polyaniline (PANI), the processability of this smart polymer is associated with challenges. Particularly, it is very difficult to prepare PANI nanofibers due to poor solubility, high charge density, and rigid backbone. The most common approach for solving this problem is blending PANI with a carrier polymer. Furthermore, the major limitations of nanofibers for tissue engineering applications are their low porosity and two-dimensional (2D) structure. In this study, conductive nanofibers were fabricated through electrospinning of PANI/poly(ether sulfone) (PES) with different solvents including dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The effect of solvent, carrier polymer (PES), and PANI content on formation of 3D conductive nanofibers with appropriate porosity were investigated. It was shown that a solvent with suitable properties should be selected in such a way that the composite nanofibers can be electrospun at the lowest concentration of PES. In this way, the ratio of PANI increased in the scaffold, the electrical conductivity of nanofibers enhanced, and the flat 2D structure of scaffold changed to a fluffy 3D structure. Among the three studied solvents, HFIP with the lowest boiling point and the lowest surface tension was the best solvent for the fabrication of PANI/PES nanofibers. PES could be electrospun at a concentration of 9% w/w in HFIP, while the optimum percentage of PES in DMSO and NMP was above 23% w/w to produce uniform nanofibers. 3D nanofibrous scaffold obtained from 0.5% PANI/9% PES/HFIP solution with electrical conductivity of 3.7 × 10^–5 S/Cm and porosity of 92.81 ± 1.23%. Cell infiltration into the 3D nanofibers with low packing density improved compared to densely packed 2D nanofibers.

The usage of composite nanomaterials in biomedical engineering applications

Nanotechnology is still developing over the decades and it is commonly used in biomedical applications with the design of nanomaterials due to the several purposes. With the investigation of materials on the molecular level has increased the develop composite nanomaterials with exceptional properties using in different applications and industries. The application of these composite nanomaterials is widely used in the fields of textile, chemical, energy, defense industry, electronics, and biomedical engineering which is growing and developing on human health. Development of biosensors for the diagnosis of diseases, drug targeting and controlled release applications, medical implants and imaging techniques are the research topics of nanobiotechnology. In this review, overview of the development of nanotechnology and applications which is use of composite nanomaterials in biomedical engineering is provided.

Electrochemical Biosensing of Dopamine Neurotransmitter: A Review

Neurotransmitters are biochemical molecules that transmit a signal from a neuron across the synapse to a target cell, thus being essential to the function of the central and peripheral nervous system. Dopamine is one of the most important catecholamine neurotransmitters since it is involved in many functions of the human central nervous system, including motor control, reward, or reinforcement. It is of utmost importance to quantify the amount of dopamine since abnormal levels can cause a variety of medical and behavioral problems. For instance, Parkinson's disease is partially caused by the death of dopamine-secreting neurons. To date, various methods have been developed to measure dopamine levels, and electrochemical biosensing seems to be the most viable due to its robustness, selectivity, sensitivity, and the possibility to achieve real-time measurements. Even if the electrochemical detection is not facile due to the presence of electroactive interfering species with similar redox potentials in real biological samples, numerous strategies have been employed to resolve this issue. The objective of this paper is to review the materials (metals and metal oxides, carbon materials, polymers) that are frequently used for the electrochemical biosensing of dopamine and point out their respective advantages and drawbacks. Different types of dopamine biosensors, including (micro)electrodes, biosensing platforms, or field-effect transistors, are also described.

Antimicrobial Polymer-Based Assemblies: A Review

An antimicrobial supramolecular assembly (ASA) is conspicuous in biomedical applications. Among the alternatives to overcome microbial resistance to antibiotics and drugs, ASAs, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and polymers (APs), provide formulations with optimal antimicrobial activity and acceptable toxicity. AMPs and APs have been delivered by a variety of carriers such as nanoparticles, coatings, multilayers, hydrogels, liposomes, nanodisks, lyotropic lipid phases, nanostructured lipid carriers, etc. They have similar mechanisms of action involving adsorption to the cell wall, penetration across the cell membrane, and microbe lysis. APs, however, offer the advantage of cheap synthetic procedures, chemical stability, and improved adsorption (due to multipoint attachment to microbes), as compared to the expensive synthetic routes, poor yield, and subpar in vivo stability seen in AMPs. We review recent advances in polymer-based antimicrobial assemblies involving AMPs and APs.

Evaluation of metal-based antimicrobial compounds for the treatment of bacterial pathogens

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest global health challenges of modern times and its prevalence is rising worldwide. AMR within bacteria reduces the efficacy of antibiotics and increases both the morbidity and the mortality associated with bacterial infections. Despite this growing risk, few antibiotics with a novel mode of action are being produced, leading to a lack of antibiotics that can effectively treat bacterial infections with AMR. Metals have a history of antibacterial use but upon the discovery of antibiotics, often became overlooked as antibacterial agents. Meanwhile, metal-based complexes have been used as treatments for other diseases, such as the gold-containing drug auranofin, used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Metal-based antibacterial compounds have novel modes of action that provide an advantage for the treatment of bacterial infections with resistance to conventional antibiotics. In this review, the antibacterial activity, mode of action, and potential for systemic use of a number of metal-based antibacterial complexes are discussed. The current limitations of these compounds are highlighted to determine if metal-based agents are a potential solution for the treatment of bacterial infections, especially those resistant to conventional antibiotics.

Carbon Nanostructures Derived through Hypergolic Reaction of Conductive Polymers with Fuming Nitric Acid at Ambient Conditions

Hypergolic systems rely on organic fuel and a powerful oxidizer that spontaneously ignites upon contact without any external ignition source. Although their main utilization pertains to rocket fuels and propellants, it is only recently that hypergolics has been established from our group as a new general method for the synthesis of different morphologies of carbon nanostructures depending on the hypergolic pair (organic fuel-oxidizer). In search of new pairs, the hypergolic mixture described here contains polyaniline as the organic source of carbon and fuming nitric acid as strong oxidizer. Specifically, the two reagents react rapidly and spontaneously upon contact at ambient conditions to afford carbon nanosheets. Further liquid-phase exfoliation of the nanosheets in dimethylformamide results in dispersed single layers exhibiting strong Tyndall effect. The method can be extended to other conductive polymers, such as polythiophene and polypyrrole, leading to the formation of different type carbon nanostructures (e.g., photolumincent carbon dots). Apart from being a new synthesis pathway towards carbon nanomaterials and a new type of reaction for conductive polymers, the present hypergolic pairs also provide a novel set of rocket bipropellants based on conductive polymers.

Conductive Materials for Healing Wounds: Their Incorporation in Electroactive Wound Dressings, Characterization, and Perspectives

The use of conductive materials to promote the activity of electrically responsive cells is an effective means of accelerating wound healing. This article focuses on recent advancements in conductive materials, with emphasis on overviewing their incorporation with non-conducting polymers to fabricate electroactive wound dressings. The characteristics of these electroactive dressings are deliberated, and the mechanisms on how they accelerate the wound healing process are discussed. Potential directions for the future development of electroactive wound dressings and their potential in monitoring the course of wound healing in vivo concomitantly are also proposed.

Recent advances in acoustic wave biosensors for the detection of disease-related biomarkers: A review

In the past several decades, acoustic wave biosensors, as an emerging kind of biosensors, have been developed and widely used for the detection of mass, viscosity, conductivity and density. Varieties of applications have been explored such as medical diagnosis, drug screening, environmental monitoring, food analysis and biochemical assay. Among them, the detection of disease-related biomarkers based on acoustic sensors has aroused great research interest all over the world. In this review, the classification and characteristics of acoustic wave biosensors are briefly introduced. Then, some classical studies and recent advances in disease-related biomarker detection utilizing these biosensors are summarized and detailed, respectively. Here, the disease-related biomarkers mainly include antigens, small molecular proteins, cancer cells, viruses and VOCs. Finally, challenges and future trends of these typical acoustic wave biosensors are discussed. Compared with other reviews of acoustic wave sensors, this review highlights the great potential of typical acoustic wave biosensors for early disease screening and diagnosis compared with widely-used medical imaging. Moreover, they are integrated with other technologies for the design of multi-analyte, multi-parameter and intelligent devices, collecting more comprehensive information from biomarkers. This review provides a new perspective on the applications and optimization of acoustic wave biosensors to develop more reliable platforms for disease-related biomarker detection and disease diagnosis.

Conducting composite films based on chitosan or sodium hyaluronate. Properties and cytocompatibility with human induced pluripotent stem cells

Novel composite films combining biocompatible polysaccharides with conducting polyaniline (PANI) were prepared via the in-situ polymerization of aniline hydrochloride in the presence of sodium hyaluronate (SH) or chitosan (CH). The composite films possess very good cytocompatibility in terms of adhesion and proliferation of two lines of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC). Moreover, the cardiomyogenesis and even formation of beating clusters were successfully induced on the films. The proportion of formed cardiomyocytes demonstrated excellent properties of composites for tissue engineering of stimuli-responsive tissues. The testing also demonstrated antibacterial activity of the films against E. coli and PANI-SH was able to reduce bacterial growth from 2 × 10⁵ to < 1 cfu cm^-2. Physicochemical characterization revealed that the presence of polysaccharides did not notably influence conductivities of the composites being ∼1 and ∼2 S cm^-1 for PANI-SH and PANI-CH respectively; however, in comparison with neat PANI, it modified their topography making the films smoother with mean surface roughness of 4 (PANI-SH) and 14 nm (PANI-CH). The combination of conductivity, antibacterial activity and mainly cytocompatibility with hiPSC opens wide application potential of these polysaccharide-based composites.

In vitro biocompatibility screening of a colloidal gum Arabic-polyaniline conducting nanocomposite

Although polyaniline (PANI) is a widely investigated conductive polymer for biological applications, studies addressing the biocompatibility of colloidal PANI dispersions are scarcely found in the literature of the area. Therefore, PANI nanoparticles stabilized by the natural polysaccharide gum Arabic (GA) were screened for their biocompatibility. The GA successfully stabilized the colloidal PANI-GA dispersions when exposed to a protein-rich medium, showing compatibility with the biological environment. The results obtained from a series of in vitro assays showed that, after up to 48 h of exposure to a range of PANI-GA concentrations (1-50 μg/mL), both mouse BALB/3T3 fibroblasts and RAW 264.7 macrophages showed no evidence of change in cellular proliferation, viability and metabolic activity. An increase in macrophage granularity poses as evidence of phagocytic uptake of PANI-GA, without resulting activation of this cell type. Additionally, the PANI-GA nanoparticles modulated the cell morphology changes induced on fibroblasts by GA in a concentration-dependent manner. Thus, this unprecedented biocompatibility study of PANI nanoparticles stabilized by a plant gum exudate polysaccharide showed promising results. This simple biomaterial might be further developed into colloidal formulations for biological and biomedical applications, taking advantage of its versatility, biocompatibility, and conductive properties.

Engineering next-generation bioinks with nanoparticles: moving from reinforcement fillers to multifunctional nanoelements

The application of additive manufacturing in the biomedical field has become a hot topic in the last decade owing to its potential to provide personalized solutions for patients. Different bioinks have been designed trying to obtain a unique concoction that addresses all the needs for tissue engineering and drug delivery purposes, among others. Despite the remarkable progress made, the development of suitable bioinks which combine printability, cytocompatibility, and biofunctionality is still a challenge. In this sense, the well-established synthetic and functionalization routes to prepare nanoparticles with different functionalities make them excellent candidates to be combined with polymeric systems in order to generate suitable multi-functional bioinks. In this review, we briefly discuss the most recent advances in the design of functional nanocomposite hydrogels considering their already evaluated or potential use as bioinks. The scientific development over the last few years is reviewed, focusing the discussion on the wide range of functionalities that can be incorporated into 3D bioprinted constructs through the addition of multifunctional nanoparticles in order to increase their regenerative potential in the field of tissue engineering.

Conductive Polyaniline Doped with Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonic Acid: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antistatic Application

A novel method was conducted to synthesize conductive polyaniline (PANI) doped with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) (PANDB) in xylene by using chemical oxidative polymerization at 25 °C. Meanwhile, the synthesis process was photographed. Results showed as the reaction time was increased, and the color of the product was gradually turned into dark green. The influence of different synthesis time on properties of synthesized PANDB was then examined by a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis), a four-point measurement method, and a Field-emittance scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The result indicated that the optimum reaction time was 24 h with conductivity at around 2.03 S/cm. FE-SEM images and the conductivity testing showed that the more needle-like shapes in resulted PANDB, the higher the conductivity. The synthesized PANDB solution was blended with UV curable coating firstly and then coated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheet. The UV coating/PANDB conductive composite films displayed an impressive translucency along with an adequate flexibility at room temperature. The UV coating/PANDB conductive composite film on PET sheet was flexible, transparent, and with antistatic function.

Revamping squid gladii to biodegradable composites: In situ grafting of polyaniline to β-chitin and their antibacterial activity

The global health concern on wound care is becoming more challenging with the emerging prevalence of inexorable antibiotic resistance. Amidst this crisis, various material innovations have been made to combat this dilemma. Herein, squid pens, which are regarded as discards in the seafood industry, were biorefined into β-chitin-graft-polyaniline (β-chitin-g-PANI) composites for possible wound dressing development. β-chitin was first chemically extracted from gladii, and was then grafted with PANI via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of various concentrations of aniline, to produce the β-chitin-g-PANI composites. Supporting data from FTIR, UV-Vis, SEM, TGA, and DSC suggest that β-chitin was successfully grafted with PANI. Moreover, improved conductivity and in vitro degradation of the composites were observed as compared to β-chitin and PANI alone, respectively. Zones of inhibition observed from agar diffusion method suggest that the synthesized composites have antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The resulting physicochemical and biological properties of integrating conducting PANI to β-chitin substantiated and rendered the β-chitin-g-PANI composites desirable candidates for the development wound care products.

Tramadol sensing in non-invasive biological fluids using a voltammetric electronic tongue and an electrochemical sensor based on biomimetic recognition

Tramadol (TRA) is a weak opioid analgesic, prescribed to relieve mild to moderately severe pain. However, side effects of TRA overdoses, including vomiting, depression, tachycardia, convulsions, morbidity and mortality are often reported. In this study, an electrochemical sensor based on molecularly imprinted conductive polymer was firstly developed for the quantitative and non-invasive detection of TRA. Secondly, a voltammetric electronic tongue (VE-Tongue) combined with chemometric methods was used for the qualitative analysis. The MIP sensor was constructed by self-assembling a poly-aniline layer coated with silver nanoparticles (PANI-AgNPs) on a screen-printed gold electrode (Au-SPE). Then, 2-amino-thiophenol was polymerised in the presence of TRA. The electronic device exhibits, under optimal conditions, responses proportional to TRA concentrations (0.01-100 µg/mL) with detection and quantification limits of 9.42 µg/mL and 28.55 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, its selectivity was proven by insignificant interferences of substances (paracetamol and citric acid). Spiked saliva and urine samples were used for the sensor practical application with a significant recovery above 90% and standard deviations below 4.5%. Besides, urine samples' analyses using VE-Tongue and pattern recognition methods show good discrimination, classification, and prediction results with scores above 95%. Correspondingly, both electro-analytical devices could be viable for monitoring drugs in biological matrices.

Cytotoxic aquatic pollutants and their removal by nanocomposite-based sorbents

Water is an extremely essential compound for human life and, hence, accessing drinking water is very important all over the world. Nowadays, due to the urbanization and industrialization, several noxious pollutants are discharged into water. Water pollution by various cytotoxic contaminants, e.g. heavy metal ions, drugs, pesticides, dyes, residues a drastic public health issue for human beings; hence, this topic has been receiving much attention for the specific approaches and technologies to remove hazardous contaminants from water and wastewater. In the current review, the cytotoxicity of different sorts of aquatic pollutants for mammalian is presented. In addition, we will overview the recent advances in various nanocomposite-based adsorbents and different approaches of pollutants removal from water/wastewater with several examples to provide a backdrop for future research.

Electro-responsive hydrogels: macromolecular and supramolecular approaches in the biomedical field

Hydrogels are soft materials of the utmost importance in the biomedical and healthcare fields. Two approaches can be considered to obtain such biomaterials: the macromolecular one and the supramolecular one. In the first, the chemical gel is based on crosslinking while in the second the physical hydrogel is stabilized thanks to noncovalent interactions. Recently, new trends rely on smart devices able to modify their physico-chemical properties under stimulation. Such stimuli-responsive systems can react to internal (i.e. pH, redox potential, enzyme, etc.) or external (i.e. magnetic field, light, electric field, etc.) triggers leading to smart drug release and drug delivery systems, 3D scaffolds or biosensors. Even if some stimuli-responsive biomaterials are currently widely studied, other ones represent a real challenge. Among them, electro-responsive hydrogels, especially obtained via supramolecular approach, are under-developped leaving room for improvement. Indeed, currently known macromolecular electro-responsive systems are reaching some limitations related to their chemical composition, physicochemical properties, mechanical strength, processing technologies, etc. In contrast, the interest for supramolecular hydrogels has risen for the past few years suggesting that they may provide new solutions as electro-responsive soft materials. In this short review, we give a recent non exhaustive survey on macromolecular and supramolecular approaches for electro-responsive hydrogels in the biomedical field.

Recent Advances of Polyaniline-Based Biomaterials for Phototherapeutic Treatments of Tumors and Bacterial Infections

Conventional treatments fail to completely eradicate tumor or bacterial infections due to their inherent shortcomings. In recent years, photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as an attractive treatment modality that relies on the absorption of photothermal agents (PTAs) at a specific wavelength, thereby transforming the excitation light energy into heat. The advantages of PTT are its high efficacy, specificity, and minimal damage to normal tissues. To this end, various inorganic nanomaterials such as gold nanostructures, carbon nanostructures, and transition metal dichalcogenides have been extensively explored for PTT applications. Subsequently, the focus has shifted to the development of polymeric PTAs, owing to their unique properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-immunogenicity, and low toxicity when compared to inorganic PTAs. Among various organic PTAs, polyaniline (PANI) is one of the best-known and earliest-reported organic PTAs. Hence, in this review, we cover the recent advances and progress of PANI-based biomaterials for PTT application in tumors and bacterial infections. The future prospects in this exciting area are also addressed.

Progress in Delivery of siRNA-Based Therapeutics Employing Nano-Vehicles for Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer (PCa) accounts for a high number of deaths in males with no available curative treatments. Patients with PCa are commonly diagnosed in advanced stages due to the lack of symptoms in the early stages. Recently, the research focus was directed toward gene editing in cancer therapy. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) intervention is considered as a powerful tool for gene silencing (knockdown), enabling the suppression of oncogene factors in cancer. This strategy is applied to the treatment of various cancers including PCa. The siRNA can inhibit proliferation and invasion of PCa cells and is able to promote the anti-tumor activity of chemotherapeutic agents. However, the off-target effects of siRNA therapy remarkably reduce its efficacy in PCa therapy. To date, various carriers were designed to improve the delivery of siRNA and, among them, nanoparticles are of importance. Nanoparticles enable the targeted delivery of siRNAs and enhance their potential in the downregulation of target genes of interest. Additionally, nanoparticles can provide a platform for the co-delivery of siRNAs and anti-tumor drugs, resulting in decreased growth and migration of PCa cells. The efficacy, specificity, and delivery of siRNAs are comprehensively discussed in this review to direct further studies toward using siRNAs and their nanoscale-delivery systems in PCa therapy and perhaps other cancer types.

Antibacterial tragacanth gum-based nanocomposite films carrying ascorbic acid antioxidant for bioactive food packaging

Food packaging has a pivotal share to improve protection, safety and shelf-life time of foods and bioproducts. Herein, we prepared bioactive nanocomposite films that composed of tragacanth (TG), polyvinyl alcohol, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and ascorbic acid (AA) using glycerol as a plasticizer and citric acid as a cross-linker for food packaging. The SEM images showed a homogenous distribution of ZnO NPs with low aggregation in nanocomposite films. The water solubility of nanocomposite films reduced from 15.65 % to 10.81 with increasing of TG and ZnO NPs contents. The incorporation of AA and ZnO NPs into nanocomposite films improved antioxidant activity from 50 % to 66 % in 95 % ethanolic solution. Also, the nanocomposite films showed good antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. Soil degradation rate of nanocomposite films increased from 80 % to 91.46 as the wt% of TG increased. Therefore, prepared nanocomposite films could be employed as a promising candidate for food packaging applications.

Application of Atmospheric-Pressure-Plasma-Jet Modified Flexible Graphite Sheets in Reduced-Graphene-Oxide/Polyaniline Supercapacitors

In this study, flexible and low-cost graphite sheets modified by atmospheric pressure plasma jet are applied to reduced-graphene-oxide/polyaniline supercapacitors. Surface treatment by atmospheric pressure plasma jet can make the hydrophobic surface of graphite into a hydrophilic surface and improve the adhesion of the screen-printed reduced-graphene-oxide/polyaniline on the graphite sheets. After the fabrication of reduced-graphene-oxide/polyaniline supercapacitors with polyvinyl alcohol/H2SO4 gel electrolyte, pseudo-capacitance and electrical double capacitance can be clearly identified by the measurement of cyclic voltammetry. The fabricated supercapacitor exhibits specific capacitance value of 227.32 F/g and areal capacitance value of 28.37 mF/cm2 with a potential scan rate of 2 mV/s. Meanwhile, the capacitance retention rate can reach 86.9% after 1000-cycle cyclic voltammetry test. A light-emitting diode can be lit by the fabricated reduced-graphene-oxide/polyaniline supercapacitors, which confirms that the supercapacitors function well and can potentially be used in a circuit.
