Sintering of catalytic nanoparticles: particle migration or Ostwald ripening?

Electronic metal-support interaction constructed for preparing sinter-resistant nano-platinum catalyst with redox property

Generally, support materials with particular structural properties could effectively anchor metal nanoparticles and provide lower activation barriers in heterogeneous catalysis. To tailor the structure of stable iron oxide, NiFe₂O₄ of inverse spinel structure was obtained by combining nickel with iron element under an alkaline environment and high-temperature calcination. The p-type conductivity of NiFe₂O₄ provides the possibility of constructing electronic interfacial interaction with Pt nanoparticles by electron transfer. The constructed metal-support interaction could effectively stabilize Pt nanoparticles and be further enhanced during long-term harsh calcination (700 °C for 48 h) even under an O₂ atmosphere. Meanwhile, the abundant structural defects of NiFe₂O₄ are beneficial for constructing low-temperature redox centers with the aid of Pt nanoparticles. Pt/NiFe₂O₄ exhibited not only excellent activity in room-temperature oxidation (CO and HCHO) and reduction reactions (chemo-selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes), but also high stability even after storage for more than 6 months. A self-adjusting mechanism triggered by structural defects is disclosed by in situ characterization and systematic reaction results. This work demonstrates an alternative concept to construct sinter-resistant and highly-effective nano-platinum catalysts robust for oxidation and reduction reactions.

Evolution of surface and sub-surface morphology and chemical state of exsolved Ni nanoparticles

Nanoparticle formation by dopant exsolution (migration) from bulk host lattices is a promising approach to generate highly stable nanoparticles with tunable size, shape, and distribution. We investigated Ni dopant migration from strontium titanate (STO) lattices, forming metallic Ni nanoparticles at STO surfaces. Ex situ scanning probe measurements confirmed the presence of nanoparticles at the H₂ treated surface. In situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) revealed reduction from Ni²⁺ to Ni⁰ as Ni dopants migrated to the surface during heating treatments in H₂. During Ni migration and reduction, the Sr and Ti chemical states were mostly unchanged, indicating the selective reduction of Ni during treatment. At the same time, we used in situ ambient pressure grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) to monitor the particle morphology. As Ni migrated to the surface, it nucleated and grew into compressed spheroidal nanoparticles partially embedded in the STO perovskite surface. These findings provide a detailed picture of the evolution of the nanoparticle surface and subsurface chemical state and morphology as the nanoparticles grow beyond the initial nucleation and growth stages.

Nanoscale Self-Wetting Driven Monatomization of Ag Nanoparticle for Excellent Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) with <10 nm have demonstrated many novel applications including surprisingly low melting point, astonishing liquid-like pseudoelasticity, and outstanding hydrogen evolution performance. Here, a nanoscale self-wetting driven monatomization of Ag NPs with <5 nm on carbon nitride (CN) to fabricate Ag single-atom catalyst (Ag₁ /CN SAC) is demonstrated, and a thermodynamic approach to elucidate Ag NPs decomposing into single atoms is established. Dynamic dispersion process of Ag NPs into atoms on CN is recorded using in situ AC-HADDF-TEM techniques. Density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the spontaneous dispersion origins from the nanoscale self-wetting effect in thermodynamics. In atomic scale, the driving force of self-wetting derived from the balance between cohesive energy of Ag NPs and excess energy of Ag atoms in CN vacations. The fabricated Ag₁ /CN SAC proved a higher efficiency for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (3690 μmmol g^-1 h^-1 ) than Pt nanoparticles on CN (3192 μmmol g^-1 h^-1 ). This spontaneous monatomization resulting from the interaction between metal NPs and substrate provides a simple method to prepare SACs with a high active photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Synthesis of a Spatially Confined, Highly Durable, and Fully Exposed Pd Cluster Catalyst via Sequential Site-Selective Atomic Layer Deposition

Bottom-up synthesis based on site-selective atomic layer deposition is a powerful atomic-scale processing approach to fabricate materials with desired functionalities. Typical selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be achieved using selective activation of a growth area or selective deactivation of a protected area. In this work, we explored the site selectivity based on the difference of the inherent surface reactivity between different materials and within the same materials. By sequentially applying two site-selective atomic layer deposition, the ALD Pd catalyst is spatially confined on ALD SnO₂ modified h-BN substrate Pd/SnO₂/h-BN shows improved catalytic activity and stability due to strong metal-support interactions and spatial confinement. The results reveal that sequential site-selective ALD is a feasible and effective synthesis strategy that provides an attractive path toward designing and developing highly stable catalysts.

Visualization of the Final Stage of Sintering in Nanoceramics with Atomic Resolution

The deep understanding of the sintering mechanism is pivotal to optimizing denser ceramics production. Although several models explain the sintering satisfactorily on the micrometric scale, the extrapolation for nanostructured systems is not trivial. Aiming to provide additional information about the particularities of the sintering at the nanoscale, we performed in situ experiments using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). We studied the pore elimination process in a ZrO₂ thin film and identified a high anisotropic pore elimination. Interestingly, there is a redistribution of the atoms from the rough surface in the solid-gas surface, followed by the atom attachment in a faceted surface. Finally, we found evidence of the pore acting as a pin, reducing the GB mobility. These findings certainly can contribute to enhance the kinetic models to describe the densification process of systems at the nanoscale.

Deep learning detection of nanoparticles and multiple object tracking of their dynamic evolution during in situ ETEM studies

In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of dynamic events produce large quantities of data especially under the form of images. In the important case of heterogeneous catalysis, environmental TEM (ETEM) under gas and temperature allows to follow a large population of supported nanoparticles (NPs) evolving under reactive conditions. Interpreting properly large image sequences gives precious information on the catalytic properties of the active phase by identifying causes for its deactivation. To perform a quantitative, objective and robust treatment, we propose an automatic procedure to track nanoparticles observed in Scanning ETEM (STEM in ETEM). Our approach involves deep learning and computer vision developments in multiple object tracking. At first, a registration step corrects the image displacements and misalignment inherent to the in situ acquisition. Then, a deep learning approach detects the nanoparticles on all frames of video sequences. Finally, an iterative tracking algorithm reconstructs their trajectories. This treatment allows to deduce quantitative and statistical features about their evolution or motion, such as a Brownian behavior and merging or crossing events. We treat the case of in situ calcination of palladium (oxide) / delta-alumina, where the present approach allows a discussion of operating processes such as Ostwald ripening or NP aggregative coalescence.

Tailoring Single-Atom Platinum for Selective and Stable Catalysts in Propane Dehydrogenation

Propane dehydrogenation has been a promising method for producing propylene that has the potentials to meet the increasing global demand for propylene. However, owing to the restricted equilibrium conversion caused by the high endothermicity, even the Pt-based catalysts, which exhibit high activity and selectivity, severely suffer significantly from coke formation and/or nanoparticle sintering at realistic reaction temperatures, resulting in a short catalyst lifetime. As a result, few innovative catalysts in terms of catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability, have been produced. In this Review, we focus on the characteristics of single-atom-like Pt sites for PDH and attempt to provide suggestions for developing highly efficient catalysts. First, we briefly describe the fundamental strategies. Following that, the remarkable catalysis is addressed by three different distinct sorts of state-of-the-art single-atom-like Pt catalysts are discussed. Additionally, we present other promising catalyst design approaches that are not based on single-atom-like Pt catalysts, as well as future research challenges in this field.

Strong Metal Phosphide-Phosphate Support Interaction for Enhanced Non-Noble Metal Catalysis

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is crucial for supported catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis. Here is the first report on strong metal phosphide-phosphate support interaction (SMPSI). The key to SMPSI is the activation of P species on the support, which leads to simultaneous generation of metal phosphide nanoparticles (NPs) and core-shell nanostructures formed by support migration onto the NPs. The encapsulation state of metal phosphide and charge transfer are identical to those of classical SMSIs and can be optimally regulated. Furthermore, the strong interactions of Co₂ P_L /MnP-3 not only significantly enhance the anti-oxidation and anti-acid capability of non-noble metal but also exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability toward hydrogenating a wide range of compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity, which is even better than Pd/C and Pt/C. The SMPSI construction can be generally extended to other systems such as Ni₂ P_L /Mn₃ (PO₄ )₂ , Co₂ P_L /LaPO₄ , and CoP_L /CePO₄ . This study provides a new approach for the rational design of advanced non-noble metal catalysts and introduce a novel paradigm for the strong interaction between NPs and support.

Direct Observation of Three-Dimensional Atomic Structure of Twinned Metallic Nanoparticles and Their Catalytic Properties

We determined a full 3D atomic structure of a dumbbell-shaped Pt nanoparticle formed by a coalescence of two nanoclusters using deep learning assisted atomic electron tomography. Formation of a double twin boundary was clearly observed at the interface, while substantial anisotropy and disorder were also found throughout the nanodumbbell. This suggests that the diffusion of interfacial atoms mainly governed the coalescence process, but other dynamic processes such as surface restructuring and plastic deformation were also involved. A full 3D strain tensor was clearly mapped, which allows direct calculation of the oxygen reduction reaction activity at the surface. Strong tensile strain was found at the protruded region of the nanodumbbell, which results in an improved catalytic activity on {100} facets. This work provides important clues regarding the coalescence mechanism and the relation between the atomic structure and catalytic property at the single-atom level.

Particle Recognition on Transmission Electron Microscopy Images Using Computer Vision and Deep Learning for Catalytic Applications

Recognition and measuring particles on microscopy images is an important part of many scientific studies, including catalytic investigations. In this paper, we present the results of the application of deep learning to the automated recognition of nanoparticles deposited on porous supports (heterogeneous catalysts) on images obtained by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Cascade Mask-RCNN neural network was used. During the training, two types of objects were labeled on raw TEM images of ‘real’ catalysts: visible particles and overlapping particle projections. The trained neural network recognized nanoparticles in the test dataset with 0.71 precision and 0.72 recall for both classes of objects and 0.84 precision and 0.79 recall for visible particles. The developed model is integrated into the open-access web service ‘ParticlesNN’, which can be used by any researcher in the world. Instead of hours, TEM data processing per one image analysis is reduced to a maximum of a couple of minutes and the divergence of mean particle size determination is approximately 2% compared to manual analysis. The proposed tool encourages accelerating catalytic research and improving the objectivity and accuracy of analysis.

Mesoporous Silica-Coated Upconversion Nanoparticles Assisted Photodynamic Therapy Using 5-Aminolevulinic Acid: Mechanistic and In Vivo Studies

Exclusively red-emitting upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with the composition NaErF₄:0.5%Tm as a core and NaYF₄ as a shell were synthesized for performing photodynamic therapy (PDT). A possible mechanism was proposed for core-shell UCNPs formation. For loading a maximum amount of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), mesoporous silica coating was performed on UCNPs. Studies under dark conditions confirmed the biocompatibility of 5-ALA-loaded UCNPs formulation (UCNPs-5-ALA) with MCF-7 cells. Meanwhile, studies under light-exposed conditions exhibited effective cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells. Studies employing D₂O-based cell cultured media and addition of DABCO in cell culture established that the cell death was due to oxidation of cellular components by reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggering the apoptosis. The formation of ROS was confirmed by DCF(H)DA-based ROS analysis via fluorescence microscopy to demonstrate the ROS production, which mediates the programmed cell death. Additionally, we have validated the apoptosis in MCF-7 cells with flow cytometry analyses. This was further confirmed by an electrophoretic mobility shift assay on nuclear extract and measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential. In the case of animal model studies, the formulation UCNPs-5-ALA without irradiation (980 nm) did not possess any in vivo cytotoxicity on tumor-induced SCID mice and there was a minimum migration of UCNPs-5-ALA to the vital organs but maximum retention at the tumor site only. Meanwhile, only the mice treated with UCNPs-5-ALA and irradiated on the tumor region with 980 nm laser (500 mW) for 20 min possessed a tumor with a size reduced to about 75% as compared with the corresponding control groups. To the best of our knowledge, this type of study was conducted for the first time employing exclusively red-emitting phosphors for effective PDT.

N,N-Dimethylformamide-stabilized ruthenium nanoparticle catalyst for β-alkylated dimer alcohol formation via Guerbet reaction of primary alcohols

N,N-Dimethylformamide-stabilized Ru nanoparticles (NPs) provide a highly efficient catalyst for the Guerbet reaction of primary alcohols. DMF-modified Ru NPs were synthesized, and characterized by transition electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The Ru NP catalyst was highly durable during catalytic reactions under external additive/solvent-free conditions.

N,N-Dimethylformamide-stabilized Ru nanoparticles (NPs) provide a highly efficient catalyst for the Guerbet reaction of primary alcohols under solvent-free conditions and without the use of external ligands.

Release of Nanoparticles in the Environment and Catalytic Converters Ageing

A Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) contains a cordierite ceramic monolith coated with a layer of Al₂O₃, Ce_xZr_1−xO₂ and platinoids mixture. Under standard operation, the platinoid concentration decreases, exposing the remaining washcoat structure. After that particle release stage, the sintering process follows where the crystalline Ce_xZr_1−xO₂ solution is broken and begins to separate into ZrO₂ and CeO₂ phases. ZrO₂ is released to the environment as micro and nanoparticles, while a small amount of CeO₂ generates a new Al_xCe_1−xO₂ composite. The main effect of Ce capture is the growth in the size of the polycrystal structure from 86.13 ± 16.58 nm to 225.35 ± 69.51 nm. Moreover, a transformation of cordierite to mullite was identified by XRD analysis. Raman spectra showed that the oxygen vacancies (Vö) concentration decreased as Ce_xZr_1−xO₂ phases separation occurred_. The SEM-EDS revealed the incorporation of new spurious elements and microfractures favouring the detachment of the TWC support structure. The release of ultrafine particles is a consequence of catalytic devices overusing. The emission of refractory micro to nanocrystals to the atmosphere may represent an emerging public health issue underlining the importance of implementing strict worldwide regulations on regular TWCs replacement.

Phase-Controlled NiO Nanoparticles on Reduced Graphene Oxide as Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Efficient water electrolysis is one of the key issues in realizing a clean and renewable energy society based on hydrogen fuel. However, several obstacles remain to be solved for electrochemical water splitting catalysts, which are the high cost of noble metals and the high overpotential of alternative catalysts. Herein, we suggest Ni-based alternative catalysts that have comparable performances with precious metal-based catalysts and could be applied to both cathode and anode by precise phase control of the pristine catalyst. A facile microwave-assisted procedure was used for NiO nanoparticles anchored on reduced graphene oxide (NiO NPs/rGO) with uniform size distribution in ~1.8 nm. Subsequently, the Ni-NiO dual phase of the NPs (A-NiO NPs/rGO) could be obtained via tailored partial reduction of the NiO NPs/rGO. Moreover, we demonstrate from systematic HADDF-EDS and XPS analyses that metallic Ni could be formed in a local area of the NiO NP after the reductive annealing procedure. Indeed, the synergistic catalytic performance of the Ni-NiO phase of the A-NiO NPs/rGO promoted hydrogen evolution reaction activity with an overpotential as 201 mV at 10 mA cm⁻², whereas the NiO NPs/rGO showed 353 mV. Meanwhile, the NiO NPs/rGO exhibited the most excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance among all of the Ni-based catalysts, with an overpotential of 369 mV at 10 mA cm⁻², indicating that they could be selectively utilized in the overall water splitting. Furthermore, both catalysts retained their activities over 12 h with constant voltage and 1000 cycles under cyclic redox reaction, proving their high durability. Finally, the full cell capability for the overall water electrolysis system was confirmed by observing the generation of hydrogen and oxygen on the surface of the cathode and anode.

Ru-Catalyzed Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction with Near-Unity Selectivity and Superior Stability

Cascade catalysis of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) and well-established CO hydrogenation holds promise for the conversion of greenhouse gas CO₂ and renewable H₂ into liquid hydrocarbons and methanol under mild conditions. However, it remains a big challenge to develop low-temperature RWGS catalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability. Here, we report the design of an efficient RWGS catalyst by encapsulating ruthenium clusters with the size of 1 nm inside hollow silica shells. The spatially confined structure prevents the sintering of Ru clusters while the permeable silica layer allows the diffusion of gaseous reactants and products. This catalyst with reduced particle sizes not only inherits the excellent activity of Ru in CO₂ hydrogenation reactions but also exhibits nearly 100% CO selectivity and superior stability at 200-500 °C. The ability to selectively produce CO from CO₂ at relatively low temperatures paves the way for the production of value-added fuels from CO₂ and renewable H₂.

Catalyst overcoating engineering towards high-performance electrocatalysis

Clean and sustainable energy needs the development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts as they are of vital importance for electrochemical transformation reactions in renewable energy conversion and storage devices. Advances in nanoscience and material chemistry have afforded great opportunities for the design and optimization of nanostructured electrocatalysts with high efficiency and practical durability. In this review article, we specifically emphasize the synthetic methodologies for the versatile surface overcoating engineering reported to date for optimal electrocatalysts. We discuss the recent progress in the development of surface overcoating-derived electrocatalysts potentially applied in polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water electrolyzers by correlating catalyst intrinsic structures with electrocatalytic properties. Finally, we present the opportunities and perspectives of surface overcoating engineering for the design of advanced (electro)catalysts and their deep exploitation in a broad scope of applications.

Thermally Stable Single-Atom Heterogeneous Catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted extensive attention in fields related to energy, environment, and material sciences because of the high atom efficiency and the unique properties of these materials. Many approaches have hitherto been successfully established to prepare SACs, including impregnation, pyrolysis-involved processes, atom trapping, and coprecipitation. However, under typical reaction conditions, single atoms on catalysts tend to migrate or agglomerate, forming nanoclusters or nanoparticles, which lowers their surface free energy. Efforts are required to develop strategies for improving the thermal stability of SACs while achieving excellent catalytic performance. In this Progress Report, recent advances in the development of thermally durable single-atom heterogeneous catalysts are discussed. Several important preparation approaches for thermally stable SACs are described in this article. Fundamental understanding of the coordination structures of thermally stable single atom prepared by these methods is discussed. Furthermore, the catalytic performances of these thermally stable SACs are reviewed, including their activity and stability. Finally, a perspective of this important and rapidly evolving research field is provided.

Atomic Structure Evolution of Pt-Co Binary Catalysts: Single Metal Sites versus Intermetallic Nanocrystals

Due to their exceptional catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and other crucial electrochemical reactions, PtCo intermetallic nanoparticle (NP) and single atomic (SA) Pt metal site catalysts have received considerable attention. However, their formation mechanisms at the atomic level during high-temperature annealing processes remain elusive. Here, the thermally driven structure evolution of Pt-Co binary catalyst systems is investigated using advanced in situ electron microscopy, including PtCo intermetallic alloys and single Pt/Co metal sites. The pre-doping of CoN₄ sites in carbon supports and the initial Pt NP sizes play essential roles in forming either Pt₃ Co intermetallics or single Pt/Co metal sites. Importantly, the initial Pt NP loadings against the carbon support are critical to whether alloying to L1₂ -ordered Pt₃ Co NPs or atomizing to SA Pt sites at high temperatures. High Pt NP loadings (e.g., 20%) tend to lead to the formation of highly ordered Pt₃ Co intermetallic NPs with excellent activity and enhanced stability toward the ORR. In contrast, at a relatively low Pt loading (<6 wt%), the formation of single Pt sites in the form of PtC₃ N is thermodynamically favorable, in which a synergy between the PtC₃ N and the CoN₄ sites could enhance the catalytic activity for the ORR, but showing insufficient stability.

Reversing sintering effect of Ni particles on γ-Mo2N via strong metal support interaction

Reversing the thermal induced sintering phenomenon and forming high temperature stable fine dispersed metallic centers with unique structural and electronic properties is one of the ever-lasting targets of heterogeneous catalysis. Here we report that the dispersion of metallic Ni particles into under-coordinated two-dimensional Ni clusters over γ-Mo2N is a thermodynamically favorable process based on the AIMD simulation. A Ni-4nm/γ-Mo2N model catalyst is synthesized and used to further study the reverse sintering effect by the combination of multiple in-situ characterization methods, including in-situ quick XANES and EXAFS, ambient pressure XPS and environmental SE/STEM etc. The under-coordinated two-dimensional layered Ni clusters on molybdenum nitride support generated from the Ni-4nm/γ-Mo2N has been demonstrated to be a thermally stable catalyst in 50 h stability test in CO2 hydrogenation, and exhibits a remarkable catalytic selectivity reverse compared with traditional Ni particles-based catalyst, leading to a chemo-specific CO2 hydrogenation to CO.

Recent Advances in the Mitigation of the Catalyst Deactivation of CO2 Hydrogenation to Light Olefins

The catalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels has been long regarded as a promising approach to the mitigation of CO2 emissions if green hydrogen is used. Light olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, as building blocks for polymers and plastics, are currently produced primarily from CO2-generating fossil resources. The identification of highly efficient catalysts with selective pathways for light olefin production from CO2 is a high-reward goal, but it has serious technical challenges, such as low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first provide a brief summary of the two dominant reaction pathways (CO2-Fischer-Tropsch and MeOH-mediated pathways), mechanistic insights, and catalytic materials for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Then, we list the main deactivation mechanisms caused by carbon deposition, water formation, phase transformation and metal sintering/agglomeration. Finally, we detail the recent progress on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability by the following catalyst functionalities: (1) the promoter effect, (2) the support effect, (3) the bifunctional composite catalyst effect, and (4) the structure effect. The main focus of this review is to provide a useful resource for researchers to correlate catalyst deactivation and the recent research effort on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability.

“Doing More with Less”: Ni(II)@ORMOSIL, a Novel Sol-Gel Pre-Catalyst for the Reduction of Nitrobenzene

Reduction of nitrobenzene with NaBH4 using zero-valent iron nanoparticles (ZVI-NPs) and NiCl2∙6H2O incorporated in organically modified hybrid silica matrices as ZVI@ORMOSIL and Ni(II)@ORMOSIL catalysts is proposed as a remediation strategy. Ni(II)@ORMOSIL is prepared by ion-exchanging H+ of the ORMOSIL matrix with NiII. Ni(II)@ORMOSIL is a pre-catalyst that undergoes reduction by NaBH4 by an in-situ reaction and promotes nitrobenzene reduction by the unconsumed NaBH4, leading to sparing use of the catalyst. Ni(II)@ORMOSIL undergoes color change from green to black in this process, returning to a green hue after washing and drying. Nitrobenzene reductions were examined in aqueous acetonitrile solvent mixtures, and the reduction cascade produced the reaction end-products with catalytic implications. Plausible mechanisms of ZVI@ORMOSIL and Ni(II)@ORMOSIL catalyzed reductions of nitrobenzene are discussed. This work is the first to report M(II)@ORMOSIL pre-catalysts for in-situ reduction of nitrobenzene, and expands the scope of the ORMOSIL series of catalysts for the reduction of polluting compounds. This approach enables the development of catalysts that use very low concentrations of transition metal cations.

Coalescence and shape oscillation of Au nanoparticles in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Recently, there has been renewed interest in Au nanoparticle (Au NP) catalysts owing to their high selectivity for CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol. However, there is still limited knowledge on the main factors of the catalytic activity and product selectivity of Au NPs. To address this issue, we utilized in situ transmission electron microscopy to observe the evolution of Au NP catalysts during CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol at 260 °C under ambient pressure. During the reaction, Au NPs sized ≤5 nm coalesced rapidly, forming stable Au NPs sized 5-10 nm with oscillating shapes. The first-principles calculations demonstrated that the adsorption of the reactant gas CO₂ is the main factor in inducing the coalescence of Au NPs, and CO and/or H₂O adsorption generated by the reaction caused the oscillation of the Au NP shape. Furthermore, the adsorption of various gas molecules resulted in continuous changes in the structure of the catalyst active center. In this study, the in situ observation of the dynamic evolution of the Au NP morphology is important in understanding the structural transformation of Au NP catalysts at the nanometer scale and determining the active site motifs under the reaction conditions. Moreover, this would allow us to further understand the size effect and the dynamic evolution behavior of the active center of Au NP catalysts, thereby providing a new idea for the development and application of new catalysts and strong theoretical support for heterogeneous catalytic reaction mechanisms.

Anomalous Size Effect of Pt Ultrathin Nanowires on Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The classical size effect of Pt particles on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) suggests that the activity and durability would decrease with reducing the particle size, self-limiting the effectiveness in maximizing the Pt utilization efficiency with the particle-size-reduction strategy. Herein, we discover an anomalous size effect based on Pt nanowires (NWs) with tunable diameters, where the monotonically increasing activity and durability for ORR were observed with decreasing the diameter from 2.4 to 1.1 nm. Our results reveal that the dominant role of increased compressive strain induced by decreasing the diameter of NWs in weakening the adsorption and suppressing the Pt dissolution accounts for this anomalous size effect, where the reduced low-coordinated sites on NWs, the intrinsic structural advantage, is the root. Our findings not only expand the knowledge to the classical size effect but also provide new implications to break through the size limit in the design of Pt-based ORR catalysts.

Comparison of the Antimicrobial and Hemolytic Activities of Various Forms of Silver (Ions, Nanoparticles, Bioconjugates) Stabilized in a Zeolite Matrix

A quantitative and qualitative comparison of the antimicrobial and hemolytic activities of silver in various states, in the form of ions, nanoparticles, and bioconjugates with the antimicrobial protein lysozyme stabilized in an inert zeolite matrix, has been carried out. A synthetic zeolite with a β structure was chosen as a zeolite matrix. Using the ion-exchange method, the method of chemical reduction, and treating the matrix with a silver hydrosol with specified characteristics, samples of zeolites with the same silver content in various forms (Ag⁺, Ag° - Ag°/Lyz) in the amounts of 0.8 and 5 wt % have been synthesized. The samples obtained were studied by a complex of physicochemical research methods: X-ray diffraction, UV absorption spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, electron microscopy, and atomic absorption. Antimicrobial activity was assessed against antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative microbe (e.g., Escherichia coli ML-35, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 522/17 MDR, Klebsiella pneumoniae ESBL 344) and Gram-positive microbe (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus 1399/17). The hemolytic activity in relation to human erythrocytes was estimated. The results obtained showed significant antimicrobial activity with a simultaneously high hemolytic activity of ionic silver. Silver nanoparticles have a lower level of antimicrobial activity and toxicity. Bioconjugates of silver nanoparticles and lysozyme showed an optimal combination of antimicrobial properties and lack of hemolytic activity.

Multiplexed Analysis of Photochemical Oxidants Using a Nanoparticle-Based Optoelectronic Nose

Photochemical pollutants pose a substantial threat to human health in both outdoor and indoor environments. Herein, we prepare a class of gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric sensor arrays on optimized hydrophobic substrates using a simple pin-printing method for accurate identification and quantification of various gas-phase oxidants, as these microdetectors are low cost, sensitive, and easy to fabricate. For an array of AuNP sensors modified with various thiol-terminated ligands, a unique and distinguishable change in color (i.e., red, green, and blue response patterns) was obtained for each specific pollutant for molecular fingerprinting. Remarkable discrimination among 15 gases at a fairly low vapor concentration (i.e., 500 ppb) was illustrated using standard chemometric methods. Using digital imaging, the AuNP colorimetric sensor array offers ultrasensitive dosimetric identification of gas-phase oxidants relevant to outdoor and indoor air pollution, with limits of detection generally at sub-ppb levels for 2 h measurement. As a practical application, the sensor array is able to predict the overall air quality in indoor office environments over 24 h. Such sensor array based on chemically induced sintering of nanoparticles has significant implications for the development of nanosensors used in continuous monitoring of potential airborne pollutants at low concentrations from a large number of locations in a cost-effective manner.

Mechanistic and multiscale aspects of thermo-catalytic CO2 conversion to C1 products

The increasing environmental concerns due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions have called for an alternate sustainable source to fulfill rising chemical and energy demands and reduce environmental problems. The thermo-catalytic activation and conversion of abundantly available CO2, a thermodynamically stable and kinetically inert molecule, can significantly pave the way to sustainably produce chemicals and fuels and mitigate the additional CO2 load. This can be done through comprehensive knowledge and understanding of catalyst behavior, reaction kinetics, and reactor design. This review aims to catalog and summarize the advances in the experimental and theoretical approaches for CO2 activation and conversion to C1 products via heterogeneous catalytic routes. To this aim, we analyze the current literature works describing experimental analyses (e.g., catalyst characterization and kinetics measurement) as well as computational studies (e.g., microkinetic modeling and first-principles calculations). The catalytic reactions of CO2 activation and conversion reviewed in detail are: (i) reverse water-gas shift (RWGS), (ii) CO2 methanation, (iii) CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, and (iv) dry reforming of methane (DRM). This review is divided into six sections. The first section provides an overview of the energy and environmental problems of our society, in which promising strategies and possible pathways to utilize anthropogenic CO2 are highlighted. In the second section, the discussion follows with the description of materials and mechanisms of the available thermo-catalytic processes for CO2 utilization. In the third section, the process of catalyst deactivation by coking is presented, and possible solutions to the problem are recommended based on experimental and theoretical literature works. In the fourth section, kinetic models are reviewed. In the fifth section, reaction technologies associated with the conversion of CO2 are described, and, finally, in the sixth section, concluding remarks and future directions are provided.

Catalytic Tar Conversion in Two Different Hot Syngas Cleaning Systems

Tar in the product gas of biomass gasifiers reduces the efficiency of gasification processes and causes fouling of system components and pipework. Therefore, an efficient tar conversion in the product gas is a key step of effective and reliable syngas production. One of the most promising approaches is the catalytic decomposition of the tar species combined with hot syngas cleaning. The catalyst must be able to convert tar components in the synthesis gas at temperatures of around 700 °C downstream of the gasifier without preheating. A Ni-based doped catalyst with high activity in tar conversion was developed and characterized in detail. An appropriate composition of transition metals was applied to minimize catalyst coking. Precious metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, or a combination of two of them) were added to the catalyst in small quantities. Depending on the hot gas cleaning system used, both transition metals and precious metals were co-impregnated on pellets or on a ceramic filter material. In the case of a pelletized-type catalyst, the hot gas cleaning system revealed a conversion above 80% for 70 and 110 h. The catalyst composed of Ni, Fe, and Cr oxides, promoted with Pt and impregnated on a ceramic fiber filter composed of Al2O3(44%)/SiO2(56%), was the most active catalyst for a compact cleaning system. This catalyst was catalytically active with a naphthalene conversion of around 93% over 95 h without catalyst deactivation.

Atomic origins of the strong metal-support interaction in silica supported catalysts

Silica supported metal catalysts are most widely used in the modern chemical industry because of the high stability and tunable reactivity. The strong metal–support interaction (SMSI), which has been widely observed in metal oxide supported catalysts and significantly affects the catalytic behavior, has been speculated to rarely happen in silica supported catalysts since silica is hard to reduce. Here we revealed at the atomic scale the interfacial reaction induced SMSI in silica supported Co and Pt catalysts under reductive conditions at high temperature using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy coupled with in situ electron energy loss spectroscopy. In a Co/SiO₂ system, the amorphous SiO₂ migrated onto the Co surface to form a crystallized quartz-SiO₂ overlayer, and simultaneously an interlayer of Si was generated in-between. The metastable crystalline SiO₂ overlayer subsequently underwent an order-to-disorder transition due to the continuous dissociation of SiO₂ and the interfacial alloying of Si with the underlying Co. The SMSI in the Pt–SiO₂ system was found to remarkably boost the catalytic hydrogenation. These findings demonstrate the universality of the SMSI in oxide supported catalysts, which is of general importance for designing catalysts and understanding catalytic mechanisms.

This work tracked at the atomic scale the interfacial reaction induced strong metal–support interaction between SiO₂ and metal catalysts and evolution under reactive conditions by aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy.

Quantification of critical particle distance for mitigating catalyst sintering

Supported metal nanoparticles are of universal importance in many industrial catalytic processes. Unfortunately, deactivation of supported metal catalysts via thermally induced sintering is a major concern especially for high-temperature reactions. Here, we demonstrate that the particle distance as an inherent parameter plays a pivotal role in catalyst sintering. We employ carbon black supported platinum for the model study, in which the particle distance is well controlled by changing platinum loading and carbon black supports with varied surface areas. Accordingly, we quantify a critical particle distance of platinum nanoparticles on carbon supports, over which the sintering can be mitigated greatly up to 900 °C. Based on in-situ aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron and theoretical studies, we find that enlarging particle distance to over the critical distance suppress the particle coalescence, and the critical particle distance itself depends sensitively on the strength of metal-support interactions.

Deactivation of supported metal catalysts via thermally induced sintering is a major concern in the catalysis community. Here, the authors demonstrate that enlarging particle distance to over the critical distance could suppress the particle coalescence greatly up to 900 °C.

Ultrafast heating to boost the electrocatalytic activity of iridium towards oxygen evolution reaction

Efficient electrocatalysts are in great demand for renewable energy storage systems. Herein, we propose an ultrafast heating strategy to fabricate an efficient Ir/CP-UH catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Experimental results demonstrated that the ultrasmall Ir nanoparticles (≈1-3 nm) and clusters (<1 nm) were highly dispersed on the carbon paper support after a short thermal shock (∼5 s). The catalyst showed a low overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable mass activity of about 13.8 times higher than that of the current state-of-the-art commercial Ir/C catalyst. This ultrafast heating strategy can also be applied to other catalyst systems for OER and other electrochemical reactions.
