Biological mechanisms for observational learning

Observational learning occurs when an animal capitalizes on the experience of another to change its own behavior in a given context. This form of learning is an efficient strategy for adapting to changes in environmental conditions, but little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. There is an abundance of literature supporting observational learning in humans and other primates, and more recent studies have begun documenting observational learning in other species such as birds and rodents. The neural mechanisms for observational learning depend on the species' brain organization and on the specific behavior being acquired. However, as a general rule, it appears that social information impinges on neural circuits for direct learning, mimicking or enhancing neuronal activity patterns that function during pavlovian, spatial or instrumental learning. Understanding the biological mechanisms for social learning could boost translational studies into behavioral interventions for a wide range of learning disorders.

Unconscious Psychological Treatments for Physiological Survival Circuits

The idea of targeting unconscious or implicit processes in psychological treatments is not new, but until recently it has not been easy to manipulate these processes without also engaging consciousness. Here we review how this is possible, using various modern cognitive neuroscience methods including a technique known as Decoded Neural-Reinforcement. We discuss the general advantages of this approach, such as how it can facilitate double-blind placebo-controlled studies, and minimize premature patient dropouts in the treatment of fear. We also speculate how this may generalize to other similar physiological survival processes.

How classmates' stress affects student's quality of motivation

Over the last decades, more and more adolescents and children feel chronically stressed, which negatively affects their school performance. However, less is known whether classmates' general stress affects an individual student's quality of motivation. Therefore, based on conservation of resources theory, this study examined the precise interplay between general stress and the quality of motivation for students in high- and low-tracking schools considering potential context effects. Results of multilevel multigroup structural equation models with questionnaire data from 1,088 German students identified differences in the relation between general stress and quality of motivation for students from different school forms on both the within and between level.

Modulation of Feeding and Associated Behaviors by Lateral Hypothalamic Circuits

Our ability to modulate and observe neuronal activity in defined neurons in freely moving animals has revolutionized neuroscience research in recent years. Findings in the lateral hypothalamus (LHA) highlighted the existence of many neuronal circuits that regulate distinct phenotypes of feeding behavior, emotional valence, and locomotor activity. Several of these neuronal circuits do not fit into a common model of neuronal integration and highlight the need to improve working models for complex behaviors. This review will specifically focus on recent literature that distinguishes LHA circuits based on their molecular and anatomical characteristics and studies their role in feeding, associated behaviors (e.g., arousal and locomotion), and emotional states (e.g., emotional valences).

Familiarity modulates social approach toward stressed conspecifics in female rats

Familiarity between conspecifics may influence how social affective cues shape social behaviors. In a social affective preference test, experimental rats, when given the choice to explore an unfamiliar stressed or a naive adult, will avoid interaction with a stressed conspecific. To determine if familiarity would influence social interactions with stressed conspecifics, male and female test rats underwent 2 social affective preference tests in isosexual triads where an experimental rat was presented with a naïve and a stressed target conspecific who were either familiar (cagemate) or unfamiliar. Male and female experimental rats avoided stressed unfamiliar conspecifics. However, experimental female rats demonstrated a preference to interact with their stressed, familiar cagemates. Male and female rats exhibited more self-grooming and immobility behavior in the presence of stressed conspecifics, which may indicate emotion contagion. These findings suggest a sex-specific role of familiarity in social approach and avoidance, and warrant further mechanistic exploration.

Social modulation of fear: Facilitation vs buffering

Social behaviors largely constitute mutual exchanges of social cues and the responses to them. The adaptive response also requires proper interpretation of the current context. In fear behaviors, social signals have bidirectional effects-some cues elicit or enhance fear whereas other suppress or buffer it. Studies on the social facilitation and social buffering of fear provide evidence of competition between social cues of opposing meanings. Co-expression of opposing cues by the same animal may explain the contradicting outcomes from the interaction between naive and frightened conspecifics, which reflect the fine balance between fear facilitation and buffering. The neuronal mechanisms that determine that balance provide an exciting target for future studies to probe the brain circuits underlying social modulation of emotional behaviors.

Behavioral Modulation by Social Experiences in Rodent Models

The lasting behavioral changes elicited by social signals provide important adaptations for survival of organisms that thrive as a group. Unlike the rapid innate responses to social cues, such adaptations have been understudied. Here, the rodent models of the lasting socially induced behavioral changes are presented as either modulations or reinforcements of the distinct forms of learning and memory or non-associative changes of affective state. The purpose of this categorization is to draw attention to the potential mechanistic links between the neuronal pathways that process social cues and the neuronal systems that mediate the well-studied forms of learning and memory. © 2018 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
