Abstract
A zinc(ii)-based coordination polymer (CP), namely [Zn(modbc)2] n (Zn-CP) (modbc = 2-methyl-6-oxygen-1,6-dihydro-3,4'-bipyridine-5-carbonitrile), has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural determination reveals that Zn-CP is a two-dimensional framework structure with tetranuclear homometallic Zn4(modbc)4 units cross-linked by modbc. The excellent luminescence as well as good stability of Zn-CP do not enable it to have selective sensing capability for different ions. After encapsulation of Tb3+ in Zn-CP, the as-obtained fluorescent functionalized Tb3+@Zn-CP maintained excellent luminescence as well as stability, which made it a highly selective and sensitive multiresponsive luminescent sensor for Ru3+, Fe3+, CrO4 2-, Cr2O7 2-, and MnO4 - with high sensitivity, good anti-interference performance, and quick response time (∼10 s). The detection limits are 0.27 μM, 0.57 μM, 0.10 μM, 0.43 μM and 0.15 μM, respectively. A possible sensing mechanism was discussed in detail.

Abstract
With the careful modulation of the relative ratio of Y3+/Eu3+and Y3+/Tb3+, two series of bimetallic RE-CPs (EuxY1−x and TbxY1−x) were successfully obtained through the isomorphous substitution method. Interestingly, the introduction of Y3+ ions does not change the fluorescence characteristic peak of 1-Eu and 1-Tb, but enhances its fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield. Experimental and theoretical simulation results show the co-doping process changes the intramolecular energy transfer process and reduces the non-radiative transition resulting from concentration quenching. Eu0.1Y0.9 and Tb0.1Y0.9 with the largest luminescence lifetime were selected as the representative research objects, their potential application for the detection of toxic metal ions and organic molecules was further investigated. Interestingly, Eu0.1Y0.9 and Tb0.1Y0.9 demonstrate high sensitivity and good selectivity towards Fe3+, Cr3+ and acetone. Besides, fine fluorescence visibility provides the necessary conditions for the preparation of simple and fast response fluorescent test papers in order to achieve real-time and convenient detection of these toxic materials. Two series of doped coordination polymers (EuxY1−x and TbxY1−x) through isomorphous substitution method utilizing Y3+ in place of partial Eu3+/Tb3+ were obtained. The doped materials could detect Fe3+, Cr3+, and acetone selectively and sensitively.![]()

Abstract
Using cobalt(II) as a metal centre with different solvent systems afforded the crystallization of isomorphous metal-organic frameworks {[Co(34pba)(44pba)]·DMF}n (1) and {[Co(34pba)(44pba)]·(C3H6O)}n (2) from mixed 4-(4-pyridyl)benzoate (44pba) and 3-(4-pyridyl)benzoate (34pba) ligands. Zinc(II) under the same reaction conditions that led to the formation of 1 formed an isostructural {[Zn(34pba)(44pba)]·DMF}n framework (3). Crystal structures of all three MOFs were elucidated and their thermal stabilities were determined. The frameworks of 1, 2, and 3 were activated under vacuum to form the desolvated forms 1d, 2d, and 3d, respectively. PXRD results showed that 1d and 2d were identical, consequently, 1d and 3d were then investigated for sorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) containing either chloro or amine moieties. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to determine the sorption capacity and selectivity for the VOCs. Some sorption products of 1d with amines became amorphous, but the crystalline framework could be recovered on desorption of the amines. Investigation of the sorption of water (H2O) and ammonia (NH3) in 1d gave rise to new phases identifiable by means of a colour change (solvatochromism). The kinetics of desorption of DMF, water and ammonia from frameworks 1d and 3d were studied using non-isothermal TGA. Activation energies for both cobalt(II) and zinc(II) frameworks are in the order NH3 < H2O < DMF, with values for the 1d analogue always higher than those for 3d.

Abstract
Recently, luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted considerable attention in fluorescence sensing. In this essay, we prepared a new cluster-based CaII-MOFs {[Ca1.5(μ8-HL1)(DMF)2]·DMF}n (1) with good water dispersibility, excellent photoluminescence properties (FL quantum yield of 20.37%) and great fluorescence stability. Further, it was employed to design as an "off-on" fluorescence sensor for sensitive detection of l-cysteine. This proposed strategy was that fluorescence of CaII-MOFs 1 was quenched for providing a low fluorescence background by the introduction of Pb2+ forming the CaII-MOFs 1/Pb2+ hybrid system. The quenching effect could be ascribed to the static quenching mechanism because of the formation of ground-state complexes and coordination interactions between the free carboxyl of H4L1 ligands of CaII-MOFs 1 and Pb2+. Then, with the addition of l-cysteine into the CaII-MOFs 1/Pb2+ hybrid system, the fluorescence signal was immediately restored. This result was because the Pb2+ was gradually released from the hybrid system by chelation interactions between the -SH groups of l-cysteine and Pb2+. This method received a relative wide linear range varying from 0.05 to 40 μM and a low detection limit of 15 nM for detection of l-cysteine. This proposed strategy was also successfully applied to detect l-cysteine in human serum samples with satisfactory recoveries from 95.9 to 101.5%.

Abstract
We report here the preparation of a series of Zr(IV) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of the MIL-140 structure type incorporating a ligand exhibiting an intense excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorescence. These solids were obtained by systematically varying the substitution rate of 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate by 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol-5,5'-dicarboxylate, and they were thoroughly characterized by complementary techniques, including high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption experiments, and time-resolved fluorescence. We show that the incorporation of the ESIPT-type ligand induces an increase of the hydrophilicity, leading ultimately to a higher sensitivity toward hydrolysis, a phenomenon rarely observed in this structure type, which is considered as one of the most stable among the Zr carboxylate MOFs. Eventually, optimization of the amount of fluorescent ligand within the structure allowed combining a decent microposity ( SBET > 750 m2·g-1) and a high stability even in boiling water, together with a high fluorescence quantum yield (>30%).

Abstract
We have thoroughly studied the luminescence behaviour of a cadmium based MOF, [Cd(C12N2H8)(C7N1O4H3)] {C12N2H8 = 1,10-phenanthroline, C7N1O4H3 = 2,5-pyridine dicarboxylate}, 1. Both steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopic experiments were performed to understand the dissimilar responses of compound 1 towards different metal ions in aqueous medium. Upon excitation at 280 nm, compound 1 showed a luminescence spectrum centered at 365 nm, which exhibited a three-fold turn-on in the presence of a trace amount of Zn2+ in aqueous solution, whereas in the presence of Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Fe2+ and Cu2+ the luminescence of compound 1 got largely quenched. Compound 1 did not show any response in the presence of other common metal ions such as K+, Mg2+, Na+, Mn2+, and Cr3+. By analysing all the experimental results, we successfully explained the versatile luminescence behaviour of compound 1. The turn-on of luminescence in the presence of Zn2+ ions was due to coordination bond formation and enhancement of the rigidity of compound 1 which resulted in the reduction of non-radiative decay processes to a large extent. The quenching of luminescence in the presence of transition metal ions was found to be static in nature, and was due to the possibility of ligand to metal charge transfer using the vacant d-orbital of the metal ions. In the case of Hg2+ which is a closed cell heavy metal ion, the quenching of luminescence was also static in nature and was due to a two-way charge transfer mechanism. We have also performed density functional theory calculations and obtained supportive results for the proposed mechanisms of luminescence turn-on and quenching. Moreover, compound 1 could be established as a selective and efficient sensor of Zn2+ in aqueous solution even in the presence of Cd2+ and other metal ions.

Abstract
A new mixed pyridyl-carboxylate ligand with two picolinate chromophores and a flexible linear spacer, potassium 2,2'-(butane-1,4-diylbis((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl))diacetate (K2bpbd), which is obtained in high yield and spectroscopically characterized, has been utilized to make new lanthanide complexes, namely, [Ln(bpbd) (H2O)2(NO3)]·xH2O, where Ln = Tb (1) and x = 6, Ln = Sm (2) and x = 7, and Ln = Dy (3) and x = 7. These complexes have been extensively characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. These show very intense characteristic luminescence features that confirm the antenna effect of the ligand on the metal center. These complexes have been utilized for the detection of various nitroaromatic compounds. Among these three complexes, 1 is found to be the best for the selective sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol in water with a detection limit of (0.35 ± 0.05) ppm. Its Stern-Volmer constant, K SV [(5.48 ± 0.1) × 104 M-1], is one of the highest among similar sensors reported so far.

Abstract
Two series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) from two structurally related flexible carboxylate-based ligands were solvothermally synthesized. H3L2 with additional -CH2- group provides more flexibility and different coordination modes and conformations compared with H3L1. As a result, 2-Ln MOFs are modulated from two-dimensional kgd of 1-Ln to three-dimensional rtl topological frameworks and further achieve enhanced chemical stability. The Eu- and Tb-MOFs exhibit strong fluorescent emission at the solid state because of the antenna effect of the ligands. Interestingly, the emissions can be tuned by simply doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ of different concentrations within the Eu xTb1- x MOFs. Notably, 2-Ln MOFs realize nearly white light emission by means of a trichromatic approach (red of Eu(III), green of Tb(III), and blue of the H3L2 ligand). Furthermore, 2-Ln MOFs also exhibit water stability and demonstrate high selective and sensitive sensing activities toward Fe(III) and Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions. The results further highlight the importance of the ligand flexibility on tuning MOF structures with improved structural stability and ion-sensing properties.

Abstract
A stable 2D terbium oxalatophosphonate with green luminescence, namely, [Tb2(H3L)(C2O4)3(H2O)4]·2H2O (1), has been hydrothermally obtained by using (4-carboxypiperidyl)-N-methylenephosphonic acid (H3L) and oxalate ligand. The luminescent investigation indicates that the emission behavior of compound 1 shows high water and pH stabilities. It can be applied as a multiresponsive luminescent probe with high selectivity, high sensitivity, recycling capability, and fast sensing of CrO4 2-, Cr2O7 2- anions and tryptophan (Trp) molecules in aqueous solution through the luminescence quenching effect. Moreover, the sensing results can be distinguished by the naked eye under the irradiation of UV light of 254 nm. In addition, the probable mechanisms for the quenching behavior are also discussed, which can be mainly attributed to the competitive absorption of excitation energy between compound 1 and the analytes.

Abstract
Recently, considerable attention has been paid to European eggs that were found to contain the poisonous insecticide fipronil. Excessive consumption of fipronil can harm the human body, in particular, the liver, thyroid, nervous system and kidneys. As a consequence, there is an urgent need to develop a method to detect fipronil. In this work, a lanthanide coordination polymer [Eu(SIP)(H2O)4]n (1) (NaH2SIP = 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, infrared spectrum and powder X-ray diffractions. The X-ray studies show that 1 is a two-dimensional layered structure, which is constructed of fused {[Eu(H2O)4]3(SIP)3} pseudo-hexagonal grids. The luminescence properties of 1 exhibit effective recognition for fipronil in methanol solution. Furthermore, a wide linear range (10-6-10-4 M), a low detection limit of 0.8 μM, high selectivity and excellent recyclability, reveal that 1 can potentially act as a luminescence-based sensor for quantitative and highly sensitive detection of fipronil. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a metal-organic coordination polymer, as a fluorescent-based probe, has been used for the detection of fipronil. Moreover, fluorescent-based test papers of 1 have also been prepared, which can be regarded as a simple and practical method for detecting fipronil.
