Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of taurine on the intestinal development, bile acid concentrations, and hormonal status of chickens. In experiment 1, a total of 250 one-day-old broilers were randomly allocated to 5 treatments and supplemented with 0, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, and 2.00 g/kg of taurine, respectively. Growth performance, weight and length of the small intestine, and intestinal morphology were measured on d 7, 22, and 44. The gene expression levels of several hormones, including epidermal growth factor and cholecystokinin, were also evaluated. In experiment 2, 60 one-day-old broilers were supplemented with 0, 1.0, and 5.0 g/kg of taurine to assess cell proliferation in the jenunal crypt. In experiment 3, 100 newly hatched broilers were assigned randomly to 5 treatments (0, 0.10, 0.50, 2.00, 8.00 g/kg of taurine) to evaluate the bile acid concentrations in the jejunal mucosa. Our results indicated that dietary taurine decreased the length and weight of small intestine, the villus width, surface area, and crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum (P < 0.05). Taurine also increased the expression of cholecystokinin and epidermal growth factor on the jejunal mucosa (P < 0.001). Taurine has little effect on stimulating the proliferation of intestinal crypt cells, except for 5 g/kg of taurine supplementation on d 14 (P < 0.05). Additionally, a linear increase in the jejunal concentrations of taurocholic acid, taurochenodeoxycholic acid, and taurolithocholic acid was observed on d 7 in broilers fed increasing levels of taurine. In conclusion, we suggested that taurine impairs intestinal mucosal development partly through generation of toxic bile acids.

Abstract
Genetic selection for improved meat yields, digestive efficiency and growth rates have transformed the biology of broiler chickens. Modern birds undergo a 50-fold multiplication in body mass in just six weeks, from hatching to slaughter weight. However, this selection for rapid growth and improvements in broiler productivity is also widely thought to be associated with increased welfare problems as many birds suffer from leg, circulatory and respiratory diseases. To understand growth-related changes in musculoskeletal and organ morphology and respiratory skeletal development over the standard six-week rearing period, we present data from post-hatch cadaveric commercial broiler chickens aged 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks. The heart, lungs and intestines decreased in size for hatch to slaughter weight when considered as a proportion of body mass. Proportional liver size increased in the two weeks after hatch but decreased between 2 and 6 weeks. Breast muscle mass on the other hand displayed strong positive allometry, increasing in mass faster than the increase in body mass. Contrastingly, less rapid isometric growth was found in the external oblique muscle, a major respiratory muscle that moves the sternum dorsally during expiration. Considered together with the relatively slow ossification of elements of the respiratory skeleton, it seems that rapid growth of the breast muscles might compromise the efficacy of the respiratory apparatus. Furthermore, the relative reduction in size of the major organs indicates that selective breeding in meat-producing birds has unintended consequences that may bias these birds toward compromised welfare and could limit further improvements in meat-production and feed efficiency.

Abstract
In ovo supplementation of poultry embryos was first reported several decades ago, but it is only recently that concerted research has been directed at developing the technology for this process to be routinely used by the poultry industry. Although the technology of in ovo feeding was patented more than 10 years ago, it has not been widely adopted by the poultry industry. This review examines the early development of the enteric system of the poultry embryo; defines and distinguishes between in ovo feeding and in ovo nutrient administration; highlights the importance of early feeding of the chick; and discusses the development of in ovo feeding technology and its effects on hatchability, growth, gut health and immune response of chicks. The range of possible nutrients that can be administered is also explored. The limitations associated with embryo development and nutrient metabolism are highlighted, leading to the prediction of the future role of in ovo feeding in the poultry industry.

Abstract
A total of 608 three-week-old male broiler chickens and White Pekin ducks were used in a 5-d trial to compare ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility of soybean meal (SBM) and canola meal (CM) using the regression method. A corn-casein-cornstarch-based diet was mixed to contain 15% CP. Cornstarch was replaced with test ingredient (SBM or CM) to contain 18 or 21% of CP in 4 other diets. A nitrogen-free diet (NFD) was used for standardization of apparent digestibility. Birds received a standard starter diet (23% CP) from d 0 to 14 posthatch and then 6 experimental diets for 5 d. On d 19 posthatch, birds were asphyxiated with CO(2), and digesta from the distal section of ileum was collected. The ileal digestibility of AA from the test ingredients was assessed by multiple linear regression analysis using data on daily apparent ileal digestible AA and total AA intakes. The basal endogenous losses of N and all AA for ducks were significantly higher than those for broilers. For ileal AA digestibility by regression of apparent digestible AA intake against AA intake, there was a higher (P < 0.05) digestibility for Cys and Pro in ducks compared with broilers (P < 0.05). Within species, digestibility was not different between SBM and CM except for Lys of ducks, and Lys and Pro of broilers (P < 0.05). The results of this study showed that ducks have higher basal endogenous AA losses compared with broiler chickens as well as higher ileal Cys and Pro digestibility estimates derived from regression approach, indicating that data obtained from broilers should not be used to formulate diets for ducks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The provision of feed is a major cost in beef production. Therefore, the improvement of feed efficiency is warranted. The direct assessment of feed efficiency has limitations and alternatives are needed. Small intestine micro-architecture is associated with function and may be related to feed efficiency. The objective was to verify the potential histomorphological differences in the small intestine of animals with divergent feed efficiency. METHODS From a population of 45 feedlot steers, 12 were selected with low-RFI (superior feed efficiency) and 12 with high-RFI (inferior feed efficiency) at the end of the finishing period. The animals were processed at 13.79 ± 1.21 months of age. Within 1.5 h of slaughter the gastrointestinal tract was collected and segments from duodenum and ileum were harvested. Tissue fragments were processed, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Photomicroscopy images were taken under 1000x magnification. For each animal 100 intestinal crypts were imaged, in a cross section view, from each of the two intestinal segments. Images were analyzed using the software ImageJ(®). The measurements taken were: crypt area, crypt perimeter, crypt lumen area, nuclei number and the cell size was indirectly calculated. Data were analyzed using general linear model and correlation procedures of SAS(®). RESULTS Efficient beef steers (low-RFI) have a greater cellularity (indicated by nuclei number) in the small intestinal crypts, both in duodenum and ileum, than less efficient beef steers (high-RFI) (P < 0.05). The mean values for the nuclei number of the low-RFI and high-RFI groups were 33.16 and 30.30 in the duodenum and 37.21 and 33.65 in the ileum, respectively. The average size of the cells did not differ between feed efficiency groups in both segments (P ≥ 0.10). A trend was observed (P ≤ 0.10) for greater crypt area and crypt perimeter in the ileum for cattle with improved feed efficiency. CONCLUSION Improved feed efficiency is associated with greater cellularity and no differences on average cell size in the crypts of the small intestine in the bovine. These observations are likely to lead to an increase in the energy demand by the small intestine regardless of the more desirable feed efficiency.

Foi avaliado se o espaço de alojamento influencia o desenvolvimento da mucosa do intestino delgado de frangos, sendo usado um esquema fatorial 4 x 2 (14, 28, 42, 55 dias de idade e alojamento pequeno: 0,11m²/ave e grande: 0,525m²/ave). Foram analisadas: altura, perímetro e número dos vilos, profundidade das criptas, número de células caliciformes e número de vilos sem e com perda de epitélio e exposição do conjuntivo. Em ambos os espaços de alojamento, o número de vilos diminuiu e a profundidade das criptas aumentou com a idade nas três regiões intestinais. A altura e o perímetro dos vilos aumentaram de 14 para 28 dias no jejuno e íleo, e o número de células caliciformes foi maior no duodeno e íleo a partir dos 42 dias. A perda de epitélio pelos vilos do íleo aumentou com a idade. Nas aves do alojamento grande, ocorreu aumento na altura e no perímetro dos vilos duodenais com a idade, possibilitado pelo aumento na profundidade das criptas, que resultou em vilos maiores nessas aves do que nas do alojamento pequeno aos 55 dias de idade. O número de células caliciformes diminuiu nas aves do alojamento pequeno aos 42 dias de idade. Os dados mostram que o tamanho do alojamento interferiu no modelo de desenvolvimento temporal da mucosa intestinal e que frangos apresentaram maior tamanho de vilo duodenal quando alojados em espaço maior.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of three kinds of red pepper supplementation 'Kagawa Hontaka' produced at Shiwaku Islands (KHS), Miki (KHM) and Takanotsume (TKT) on production performance, egg quality and intestinal histology in laying hens. A total of 32 laying hens (39 weeks of age) were randomly allotted to four groups, each comprising eight hens. Birds were fed a basal diet supplemented with red pepper at 0% (control), 0.5% KHS, 0.5% KHM and 0.5% TKT, respectively. Compared with the control group, no significant difference (p > 0.05) in feed consumption, final body weight, hen-day production, egg mass, feed efficiency, shell-breaking strength, shell thickness, shell ratio, albumen ratio, yolk ratio and Haugh units was observed among the experimental groups. Roche yolk colour fan (RYCF) value increased significantly in all experimental groups (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the KHS and KHM groups showed higher RYCF values than the TKT group (p < 0.05). Spectrophotometric measurements of yolk colour, redness (a*) and yellow index (YI) values were higher in the KHS and KHM groups (p < 0.0001). The yellowness (b*) value was lower in the TKT group (p < 0.05). The lightness (L*) value was lower in the KHS and KHM groups (p < 0.05). Villus height, villus area, cell area and cell mitosis in all intestinal segments tended to be higher in all experimental groups. Jejunal cell area and cell mitosis were higher in experimental groups than in the control group (p < 0.05). The cells on the villus tip surface were protuberated in all experimental groups. In conclusion, the KHS, KHM and TKT groups showed hypertrophied intestinal villi and epithelial cell functions. These results indicate that dietary red pepper has stimulating effect on intestinal villi and the structure of epithelial cells, and the 0.5% KHS and KHM groups improved in egg yolk colour.

To investigate the effects of a dried fermented ginger product (DFG) on growth performance, carcass quality, and intestinal histology of heat-stressed broiler, at 7 d of age, 200 male broilers were divided into 0% (control), 0.25% (0.25 S+F), 0.5% (0.5 S+F) and 1% (1 S+F) dietary DFG groups fed from 7 to 49 d of age (starter+finisher groups, S+F). Another group of chicks was fed the basal diet until 21 d of age. At 22 d of age, 150 birds from this group showing almost similar body weight were divided into 0.25% (0.25 F), 0.5% (0.5 F) and 1% (1 F) dietary DFG groups fed from 22 to 49 d of age (finisher groups, F); the control group was common for the S+F and F groups. The average temperature was around 31°C (23.2–38.6°C) throughout the trial. Compared with the control, the experimental DFG groups were not different in feed intake, body weight gain, feed efficiency and carcass quality. However, abdominal fat of the 1 S+F, 0.5 F, and 1 F groups decreased (P<0.05). Cell mitosis numbers in the duodenum tended to increase in the 1 S+F group (P<0.1). Epithelial cells on the jejunal villus apical surface of the control were mainly flat, and desquamations were observed. Desquamation was reduced with increasing DFG, and in the 1% DFG groups, many protuberant cells and cell clusters were present. The present results suggest that under high ambient temperature 1% dietary DFG from 7 to 49 d of age can decrease abdominal fat, and that jejunal villus apex was desquamated with heat stress, but desquamations were reduced with increasing DFG, and disappeared in 1% DFG groups.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of decreasing dietary protein on growth performance, carcass traits, and intestinal mucosal morphometry, 180 female Hubbard strain broiler chickens were divided into 3 groups and fed 3 isoenergetic diets ad libitum from 14 d of age until slaughter age (49 d). The treatments varied according to 3 protein levels: high-protein diet (HiP, 22.5% CP, DM basis), medium-protein diet (MedP, 20.5% CP), and low-protein diet (LowP, 18.5%). Diets were obtained by replacing wheat middlings with soybean meal and were formulated to meet or exceed broiler amino acid requirements of the NRC. Morphometric indices of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were measured at the end of the feeding period and included villus height, crypt depth, villus-to-crypt ratio, and apparent villus surface area. The dietary protein level had a significant effect on final BW of birds, whereas ADG, ADFI, and feed efficiency remained unaffected by dietary treatment. The muscle (breast and drumstick) yields were significantly higher in birds fed the HiP diet compared with those of the MedP and LowP diets. Meat quality traits were not affected by the protein level. The villus surface area of all intestinal segments did not change among groups. Instead, reducing the dietary protein level to 20.5% resulted in a higher villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio in the duodenum and ileum. On the basis of our findings, even if the high-protein diet promoted meat yield, a medium-protein diet could positively support broiler growth performance, as confirmed by favorable morphometric features of the intestine.

Abstract
1. This study investigated the effect of Eimeria spp./Clostridium perfringens induced necrotic enteritis and traditional antibiotic preventatives on intestinal micro-architecture and mucin profile. 2. A total of 600 Cobb 500 broiler chickens were randomly assigned to the following three groups: (i) unchallenged, (ii) challenged, and (iii) zinc bacitracin/monensin (ZnB/monensin) (n = 25 chickens/pen, 8 pens/group). The challenged and ZnB/monensin chickens were individually inoculated with Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima and E. tenella and C. perfringens type A (EHE-NE18) at 9 and 15 d post-hatch respectively, to induce necrotic enteritis. 3. The challenge procedure significantly decreased villus height, increased villus width and increased crypt depth in the challenged compared to the unchallenged chickens. Zinc bacitracin and monensin maintained villus-crypt structure similar to that of the unchallenged chickens. 4. Mucin profile was not affected by Eimeria spp./C. perfringens challenge as demonstrated by periodic acid-Schiff and high iron diamine-alcian blue pH 2 x 5 staining. Zinc bacitracin and monensin decreased the number of intestinal mucin-containing goblet cells. 5. Lectin histochemistry showed a trend towards greater Arachis hypogea (PNA) reactivity in unchallenged chickens. 6. In summary, Eimeria spp./C. perfringens challenge disrupted intestinal micro-architecture; however, challenge did not appear to affect intestinal mucin profile. Traditional antibiotics, zinc bacitracin and monensin maintained micro-architecture.

Abstract
The effects of two sources of dietary lipids and supplementation of Clostridium butyricum on performance and intestinal metabolism of broilers were investigated. In a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, 168 one-day-old broiler chicks were divided into four treatment groups, and fed four diets with two lipid sources (soya bean oil or fish oil, at 25 g/kg and 30 g/kg in starter and grower diets respectively), and without or with supplementation of C. butyricum (1 x 10(9) colony forming units per kg diet). C. butyricum had no effect on broiler performance. At 20 and 40 d of age, the pH of caecal digesta and the relative length of caecum were decreased after supplementation of C. butyricum (p < 0.05). After this treatment, the activity of alkaline phosphatase was increased in jejunal mucosa at 40 d of age (p < 0.01). Furthermore, there were increases in populations of lactic acid bacteria and the concentrations of acetic acid, n-butyric acid, n-valeric acid and total short chain fatty acids in caecal digesta of birds fed C. butyricum (p < 0.05). A significant interaction between lipid source and C. butyricum was found in the pH of caecal digesta at 20 d of age (p < 0.01). The results of the present study indicated that dietary supplementation of C. butyricum maybe a benefit for gut health of broiler chickens.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of early exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on small intestinal structure and function of broiler chickens. Seven-day-old birds were randomly allotted to two equal treatments: an LPS-injected treatment in which the birds were injected intraperitoneally with LPS 500 µg kg−1 body weight (dissolved in 1 mL saline) on 8, 10, 12, 15, 17, and 19 d of age, i.e., on days 1, 3, and 5 d for 2 continuous weeks, and a control treatment (CTRL) in which the birds were similarly injected with 1 mL saline as a placebo. In exp. 1, food intake and weight gain were monitored over the 2 wk, the weight of the small bowel was determined at 14 and 21 d of age and duodenal and jejunal villus height and crypt depth, D-xylose uptake were also measured at 21 d. In exp. 2, additional measurements of the intestinal peristalsis ratio and the BrdU-labeling index and duodenal sodium-glucose co-transporter-1 (SGLT1) mRNA level were made at 21 d of age. The results showed that LPS challenge decreased feed intake, daily gain, duodenal and jejunal villus height and crypt depth, plasma D-xylose concentration and intestinal BrdUrd-labeling index, respectively (P<0.05) as well as small bowel weight at 14 and 21 d of age (P<0.05). Conversely, LPS injection increased SGLT1 mRNA level in the small intestine (P<0.05) and the small intestinal relative weight at 14 (P<0.05) and 21 d of age (P=0.063). Following LPS injection there were non-significant changes in feed conversion ratio and intestinal peristalsis ratio (P>0.05). In conclusion, early LPS challenge delayed the growth of intestine and impaired small intestinal structure and absorptive function.

Abstract
1. This research was conducted to determine the effect of diet supplementation with Echinacea extract (cichoric acid) on the growth performance, antibody titres and intestinal tissue histology of layer chicks. 2. White, 1-d-old, Hy-Line hybrid chicks (n = 540) were divided into three treatments, each consisting of 6 groups of 30 chicks (n = 180): (1) control; (2) 2·5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed; and (3) 5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed. The trial lasted 60 d. 3. While the growth performance of the chicks was depressed between d 1 and 45, it was found to improve between d 45 and 60. 4. Feed consumption was lower in both of the cichoric-acid-fed groups than in the control group between d 1-15 and 15-30, but was higher between d 30 and 45. Overall, mean feed consumption did not differ between the control and cichoric-acid-fed groups during the 60 d study period. 5. During the 60 d evaluation period, live weight gain, feed utilisation rate and final live weight were higher in the control group than in both of the cichoric-acid-fed groups. 6. Antibody titres against infectious bronchitis and infectious bursal disease did not differ between the three groups, but those for Newcastle disease were higher in the 2·5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed group than in the control group after 45 d. 7. Height and width of the jejunal villus and the thickness of the muscle layer were lower in the 5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed group than in both the control and the 2·5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed groups. The height of the ileal villus was also lower in the 5 mg/kg cichoric-acid-fed group than in the other two groups. 8. Echinacea extract supplementation for layer chicks appears not to benefit growth performance and intestinal histology during the growing period.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of elevated incubation temperature on posthatch nutrient transporter gene expression, integrity of the intestinal epithelium, organ development, and performance in Ross 308 broiler chickens. Ross × Ross 308 fertile eggs (n = 900) were incubated at different eggshell temperatures during development. From embryonic day (ED) 1 to ED12, all eggs were incubated at 37.1°C, whereas from ED13 to ED21, the eggs were divided into 2 groups for incubation at 37.4°C (S) or 39.6°C (H). Performance characteristics were measured at day of hatch (DOH) and d 7, 14, 21, 30, and 42. Small intestine and residual yolk sacs were collected at DOH and d 2, 4, 6, and 10 and weighed individually. Intestinal samples from the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were evaluated for mucosal morphology and relative nutrient transporter gene expression. No significant differences were found in performance or organ weights. The intestinal morphology results showed a temperature × age interaction in duodenum villus height (P = 0.02) and crypt depth (P = 0.05) and in ileum villus height-to-crypt depth ratios (P = 0.02). There was a main effect of temperature, resulting in deeper crypts (P = 0.02) in the jejunum of chicks incubated at H compared with S. In the nutrient gene expression evaluation, peptide transporter (PepT1) showed a temperature × age interaction. On DOH and d 2, 4, and 10, PepT1 expression was similar between chicks incubated at S and H. However, on d 6, chicks incubated at S had significantly higher expression of PepT1 than those incubated at H. This study presents the effects of elevated incubation temperature on small intestine morphology and relative expression of nutrient transporter mRNA in high-yield broiler chicks, which can be important for the availability of nutrients and distribution of energy.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of delayed access to feed after hatch and the potential of two carbohydrate oligomers, trehalose and palatinose, as supplements for early feeding of broiler chickens. A total of 360 and 252 straight run broiler chicks were used in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, with each involving six treatments and six replicates. The diets were commercial in nature and supplemented with palatinose or trehalose (at 10 or 20 g/kg). Chicks were allowed to access feed within 8 h of hatch or 36 h. In Experiment 2, the supplements were fed at 10 or 20 g/kg diet; the commercial diets was also fed immediately or delayed. One of the diets contains zinc-bacitracin at 50 ppm and fed within 8 h of hatch. Delayed access to feed and water was found to reduce starting weight at placement whereas early access to feed generally improved it. Supplementation with trehalose, in particular led to higher (P < 0.001) 21-day weights than in the other groups although feed conversion ratio was not improved. The benefits of early feeding was demonstrated and trehalose may have some potential as an early feed supplement but further studies are required into how it can be applied at economic levels to minimise production costs down.

Abstract
Two lines of broilers divergently selected for a high (D+) or a low (D-) AME(n) on a wheat-based diet were studied for morphological and histological characteristics of the digestive tract. A total of 630 birds of both lines were slaughtered after a 23-d feeding period. Digestive tract morphology and intestinal histology were investigated on a total of 24 birds to describe the consequences of divergent selection. Birds of the D+ line had 34% heavier gizzards (P < 0.001) and 22% heavier proventriculi than their D- counterparts. In contrast, intestines were 15 to 40% heavier in D- birds, mainly in the jejunum (P < 0.001) and ileum (P < 0.001). Intestinal segments were also longer (between 3 and 6%) in the D- birds. Intestinal villi were larger and longer in D- birds (P < 0.001), mainly in the jejunum (14 to 16%), and crypts were 10 to 15% deeper for the 3 intestinal segments in D- birds (P < 0.001). Muscle layers of the intestine were 17 to 24% thicker (P < 0.001) and goblet cells were 27 to 34% more numerous in the jejunum and ileum of D- birds (P = 0.027). This new characterization of the 2 lines shows that divergent selection based on AME(n) modified the morphology of the proventriculus and gizzard, suggesting greater activity of this compartment in D+ than in D- birds. Intestinal adaptation revealed by visceral organ weight and length and histological modifications in D- birds can be viewed as an attempt to compensate for the low functionality of the gastric area.

Abstract
1. To clarify how histological recovery of villi and cells would be affected after refeeding single nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate and fat, male chickens were divided as follows: (1) intact control fed ad libitum a commercial finisher mash diet (CP, 140 g; ME, 11.71 MJ/kg, ALM), (2) 3 d feed withdrawal (FW), (3) FW followed by one day ad libitum free access to the mash diet (FW-ALM), and FW followed by one day force-feeding of (4) a commercial finisher pellet diet (FW-FFM) and an isocaloric diet of (5) a protein (FW-FFP), (6) a carbohydrate (FW-FFC) or (7) a fat (FW-FFF). 2. After refeeding, the formula diet groups increased in villus height and villus area and tended to increase in cell area and cell mitosis. Furthermore, flat cells on the villus tip in the F group developed to dome-shaped cells. This suggests that nutritionally well-balanced diets can induce histological recovery at villus and cellular levels. 3. Not all of the single nutrient groups recovered to the extent of the formula diet groups in all light microscopic variables after refeeding, suggesting that a single nutrient cannot induce histological recovery of the villus. 4. However, the dome-shaped cells were more distributed on the villus tip in these single nutrient groups than in the well-balanced formula diet groups, although cell diameter of the former groups was smaller than that of the latter. This suggests that the single nutrients would be effectively absorbed from cells and can induce histological recovery at the cellular level.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of dietary dried fermented ginger (DFG) on intestinal villous histological alteration and growth performance, 64 Marshall Chunky male broilers were divided into four groups, each with four replicates of four chickens. Birds were fed the basal commercial mash diet supplemented with DFG at 0 (control), 5, 10 and 20 g/kg for 42 days. With increasing dietary DFG levels, feed intake tended to decrease and significantly decreased in the 20 g/kg DFG group (p < 0.05). Weight gain was higher in all the DFG groups, with the highest in the 10 g/kg DFG group (p < 0.05), resulting in an improved feed efficiency in all the DFG groups. Intestinal villus height, villus area, cell area and cell mitosis in all the intestinal segments were higher in all the DFG groups than in the control group. Protuberated cells and cell clusters were found in all the DFG groups, suggesting that the intestinal villi and cells might be hypertrophied. The present results indicate that dietary DFG can be used as a natural feed additive to induce broiler growth performance as a result of stimulation of morphological maturation and in consequence intestinal function.

Abstract
Os efeitos da temperatura ambiente cíclica elevada sobre a morfometria da mucosa duodenal e o peso corporal em frangos de corte foram avaliados. Setenta pintos de corte, machos, foram alojados em gaiolas e distribuídos em dois grupos. Um grupo foi submetido diariamente, durante uma hora, à temperatura ambiente cíclica elevada do primeiro até o 42º dia de idade (ambiente ST); e outro foi mantido em conforto térmico (ambiente TN). Cinco frangos de cada grupo foram sacrificados, semanalmente, por deslocamento cervical para mensuração da altura de vilosidades (VI), profundidade das criptas (CR) e relação vilo/cripta (VI/CR) duodenal. Dez aves de cada grupo foram pesadas semanalmente em balança digital. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente ao acaso em esquema fatorial 7x2 (sete idades: um, sete, 14, 21, 28, 35 e 42 dias, e dois ambientes: ST e TN). Os ambientes foram comparados pelo teste de Fisher (P<0,05), e, para avaliar o efeito da idade, foi realizada análise de regressão polinomial. As aves do ambiente ST apresentaram menores VI aos 14 e 21 dias, menor CR aos 28 dias e menor VI/CR aos 21 dias de idade do que as aves do ambiente TN. A temperatura ambiente cíclica elevada teve efeito danoso sobre a estrutura da mucosa duodenal de frangos de corte até a quarta semana de idade e sobre o peso corporal ao final do ciclo produtivo.

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate effect of dietary betaine on intestinal morphology after an experimental coccidiosis. Hence a total of 189 male and female broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 9 floor cages. Chicks were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.6 or 1.2 g kg(-1) betaine. All birds were inoculated orally with Eimeria oocysts on day 28. Duodenal morphology parameters and lesions were scored by microscopic observation on intestine samples which were taken at day 42 of age. Adding 1.2 g kg(-1) betaine to diet diminished intestinal lesions (p < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with 0.6 or 1.2 g kg(-1) betaine significantly (p < 0.01) increased intraepithelial lymphocytes as well. Level of additive betaine had no effect on the ratio of villus height/crypt depth or villus surface area. Lamina propria of duodenum became thicker in the intestine of chickens which received more supplemental betaine via their diet. In conclusion, since the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes and thickness of lamina propria represent the condition of gut immune response, it seems that dietary betaine may immunomodulate the gastrointestinal tract of broilers. In addition, betaine effect on villus morphology measured later in life differed from what had been measured already earlier in life of the chicks.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding grains naturally contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins on morphometric indices of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum in turkeys. The possible preventative effect of a polymeric glucomannan mycotoxin adsorbent (GMA) was also determined. Three hundred 1-d-old male turkey poults were fed wheat, corn, and soybean meal-based starter (0 to 3 wk), grower (4 to 6 wk), developer (7 to 9 wk), and finisher (10 to 12 wk) diets formulated with control grains, contaminated grains, and contaminated grains + 0.2% GMA. Morphometric indices were measured at the end of each growth phase and included villus height (VH), crypt depth, villus width, thicknesses of submucosa and muscularis, villus-to-crypt ratio, and apparent villus surface area (AVSA). At the end of the starter phase, feedborne mycotoxins significantly decreased the VH in the duodenum, and supplementation of the contaminated diet with GMA prevented this effect. The feeding of contaminated grains also reduced (P < 0.05) VH and AVSA in jejunum, whereas none of the variables were affected in the ileum. Villus width and AVSA of duodenum, VH, and AVSA of jejunum and submucosa thickness of ileum were significantly reduced when birds were fed contaminated grains at the end of the grower phase, and supplementation with GMA prevented these effects in jejunum and ileum. No effects of diets were seen on morphometric variables at the end of the developer and finisher phases. It was concluded that consumption of grains naturally contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins results in adverse effects on intestinal morphology during early growth phases of turkeys, and GMA can prevent many of these effects.

Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of the key cereal grains and a microbial enzyme supplement on broiler chicken performance, gut microflora and intestinal function. Ingestion of the barley-based diet was associated with low 28-day body weight, decreased feed intake and high FCR. The supplemental enzyme increased feed intake and weight gain of the chickens on a wheat-based diet. The pH of the gizzard and caecal contents varied with the grain type. Enzyme supplementation reduced ileal viscosity, particularly in birds that received the diet based on wheat. The birds on the barley-based diet had lower ileal digestibility of dry matter, protein and energy than those given maize and sorghum-based diets. The ileal digestibility of starch was increased by enzyme supplementation. Enzyme supplementation increased the number of total anaerobic bacteria in the gizzard of birds fed on sorghum and increased lactobacilli in the gizzard of those fed both sorghum and wheat. The birds fed the sorghum-based diet had the lowest counts of caecal total anaerobic bacteria and lactobacilli. Jejunal villus height and villus:crypt ratio of birds fed the barley-based diet were the lowest when compared with those fed the other diets. Enzyme application induced an increase in villus height and villus:crypt ratio of birds on wheat, crypt depth on barley and a reduction in crypt depth of chickens on the sorghum-based diets. The highest activity of maltase and the lowest activity of sucrase were observed in tissue from birds fed on maize and sorghum-based diets respectively. The differences in the performance of broilers on cereal grains could be explained by changes in intestinal morphology, enzyme activities and gut microflora as well as nutrient digestibility. The improved performance by supplemental enzyme in wheat-fed chickens was associated with beneficial changes in intestinal morphology and digesta viscosity.

Abstract
Day-old male chicks were used to test the effects of a combination of formic and propionic acids (CFP) added to wheat- and barley-based diets on the performance and gut histomorphology of broilers. The CFP, containing formic and propionic acids based on an inorganic phyllo-silicate carrier, was added to starter and grower broiler diets of standard (NRC, 1994) or lower nutrient density (LND) using different levels of wheat and barley. Body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broiler chicks were significantly (P < 0.001) improved by CFP supplementation at 21 days of age regardless of nutrient density (ND). However, at 35 days of age CFP addition significantly (P < 0.001) increased BWG and FCR. Proventriculus weight was also significantly affected by the dietary treatments. Ileal viscosity was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by ND which was associated with wheat and barley contents, whereas feed viscosity was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by CFP supplementation. Villus height was significantly (P < 0.05) increased by the CFP supplementation. In the case of villus width, an interaction effect was observed: there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the group fed the standard ND diet, but only a numerical decrease in the group fed the LND diet compared to control group. No significant effect of dietary treatment on the thickness of the lamina muscularis mucosae could be detected.

Abstract
The current research was designed to determine the effect of phytase and glucanase on the energy value of corn and soybean meal (SBM) separately for broilers at various ages. The treatments were arranged as a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial, with 0 or 500 phytase units/kg or with 0 or 500 units of glucanase/kg, supplemented to either corn or SBM, with each combination represented by 6 cages of 10 birds. Diets of pure corn and soybean meal were not supplemented with additional nutrients, and were fed for 3-d periods beginning at 7, 14, or 21 d of age, representing the immature, transitional, and mature digestive tract, respectively. Each experiment was performed on a different group of birds from the same hatch. At the end of each experimental period, the broilers were euthanized and the contents of the ileum, duodenum and jejunum (pooled), and pancreas were removed for analysis. The ileal samples were analyzed for acid-insoluble ash and gross energy to determine the ileal-digestible energy (IDE) of the feedstuffs. The pancreas and duodenal-jejunal samples were analyzed for proteolytic and amylase activity to determine the influence of practical levels of phytate on enzyme activity. Results showed that neither phytase nor glucanase influenced enzyme activity in the digesta or pancreas, suggesting that practical levels of phytate did not influence the activity of proteolytic enzymes or amylase. Phytase did not influence the IDE value of either corn or SBM, and improved DM digestibility of the feed only for corn fed at 21 to 23 d. Glucanase improved IDE in both the corn and SBM diets at all ages, and improved DM digestibility in corn diets at all ages and SBM diets fed at 14 to 16 d. The IDE and DM digestibility of corn and the digesta and pancreatic enzyme activities increased with age, whereas the IDE of SBM was similar among age groups. The relative effect of glucanase on IDE of both feedstuffs was similar among age groups.

Abstract
Mucins possess potential binding sites for both commensal and pathogenic organisms and may perform a defensive role during establishment of the intestinal barrier. To observe the effects of bacteria on intestinal goblet cell mucin production during posthatch development, differences in the small intestine of conventionally reared (CR) and low bacterial load (LBL) broiler chicks were examined. Jejunal and ileal goblet cells were stained with either periodic acid-Schiff stain or high iron diaminealcian blue pH 2.5 to discriminate among neutral, sulfated, and sialylated acidic mucins. Total goblet cell numbers and morphology of goblet cells containing neutral and acidic mucins did not differ significantly between CR and LBL birds. However, significant differences in acidic mucin composition from primarily sulfated to an increase in sialylated sugars at d 4 posthatch were observed in CR chicks, with greater numbers of jejunal and ileal goblet cells displaying this mucin type (CR, 0.5 +/- 0.1 x 10(3) cells/mm(2); LBL, 0.04 +/- 0.02 x10(3) cells/mm(2)). This change in mucin profile in response to bacterial colonization suggests a potential role as a protective mechanism against pathogenic invasion of the intestinal mucosa during early development.

Abstract
1. Sugar cane extract (SCE) is the residue after removing glucose, fructose and sucrose from sugar cane juice. To investigate the effects of dietary SCE on growth performance and alterations to intestinal histology, 36 male Sanuki Cochin chickens were divided into three groups: a control group was fed a commercial diet (180 g/kg CP, 13.59 MJ/kg ME) and the treatment groups were fed the commercial diet supplemented with 0.5 or 10 g/kg SCE ad libitum for 35 d. 2. Feed intake and weight gain tended to be higher in the 0.5 and 10 g/kg SCE groups than in the control group. No specific gross morphological alterations were observed in the visceral organs of chickens in any of the groups. However, intestinal villus height, villus area, epithelial cell area and cell mitosis in each intestinal segment had higher values in the SCE groups than in the control group. In the 0.5 and 10 g/kg SCE groups, but not in the control group, the cells on the villus apical surface protuberated and had larger cell clusters and some areas with cells with no microvilli. 3. The observed alterations to intestinal histology in chickens fed dietary SCE diets demonstrate that the function of villi and cells on the villus tip might be activated in all the intestinal segments and that cell turnover is also accelerated. These activated intestinal functions appear to promote growth and immuno-stimulation in chickens fed SCE diets, especially in the 0.5 g/kg group.

Abstract
This trial examined the effect of 2 turkey breeder hen ages (33 or 55 wk of age) on performance, intestinal histology, and inflammatory immune response of female turkey poults grown to market weight. Using a randomized design, female poults were separated by breeder flock age (n = 8 floor pens/breeder flock age; n = 26 poults/pen; 0.195 m(2)/bird), fed identical commercial diets (9 phases), and grown to market weight (approximately 11.4 kg/ bird). At young ages, poults from the older breeder flock tended to have higher BW (P < 0.01 for d 7, P < 0.09 for d 63), although feed consumed was not significantly different due to breeder flock age (P > 0.20 for all ages). After approximately 63 d posthatch, no difference in BW was observed, suggesting that poults from the younger breeder flock were eventually able to compensate for initial reductions in performance. In addition to growth measurements on d 10, 24, and 65 posthatch, poults were vaccinated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, from Salmonella Typhimurium; 0.5 mg/kg of BW intraabdominally) or not vaccinated (control), and intestinal histology and plasma haptoglobin were assessed at 24 h postadministration. In control birds, intestinal villus length was greater for poults from the older breeder flock (P < 0.05), as was crypt depth (P < 0.05 for d 11 and 25). Plasma haptoglobin levels did not change in 11-d-old poults after LPS administration, but they increased with LPS at d 25 and 66 posthatch (P < 0.05 for each). At d 66 posthatch, poults from the younger flock had increased haptoglobin levels post-LPS compared with those from the older breeder flock (P < 0.05). In general, LPS administration increased villus width in the jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05 for each), increased lamina propria width in the duodenum and ileum (P < 0.05 for each), and decreased ileum crypt depth (P < 0.05). Overall, poults from the older breeder flock had reduced inflammatory responses, even at 9 to 10 wk posthatch, even though performance was similar in poults from the 2 flocks by this age.
