Abstract
We present a general theory of bicircular high-order-harmonic generation from N-fold rotationally symmetric molecules. Using a rotating frame of reference we predict the complete structure of the high-order-harmonic spectra for arbitrary driving frequency ratios and show how molecular symmetries can be directly identified from the harmonic signal. Our findings reveal that a characteristic fingerprint of rotational molecular symmetries can be universally observed in the ultrafast response of molecules to strong bicircular fields.

Abstract
A new scheme for enantiomer differentiation of chiral molecules using a pair of linearly polarized intense ultrashort laser pulses with skewed mutual polarization is presented. The technique relies on the fact that the off-diagonal anisotropic contributions to the electric polarizability tensor for two enantiomers have different signs. Exploiting this property, we are able to excite a coherent unidirectional rotation of two enantiomers with a π phase difference in the molecular electric dipole moment. The approach is robust and suitable for relatively high temperatures of molecular samples, making it applicable for selective chiral analysis of mixtures, and to chiral molecules with low barriers between enantiomers. As an illustration, we present nanosecond laser-driven dynamics of a tetratomic nonrigid chiral molecule with short-lived chirality. The ultrafast time scale of the proposed technique is well suited to study parity violation in molecular systems in short-lived chiral states.

Abstract
Three ways of realizing mass-selective chiral analysis are reviewed. The first is based on the formation of diastereomers that are of homo- and hetero- type with respect to the enantiomers of involved chiral molecules. This way is quite well-established with numerous applications. The other two ways are more recent developments, both based on circular dichroism (CD). In one, conventional or nonlinear electronic CD is linked to mass spectrometry (MS) by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. The other is based on CD in the angular distribution of photoelectrons, which is measured in combination with MS via photoion photoelectron coincidence. Among the many important applications of mass-selective chiral analysis, this review focuses on its use as an analytical tool for the development of heterogeneous enantioselective chemical catalysis. There exist other approaches to combine chiral analysis and mass-selective detection, such as chiral chromatography MS, which are not discussed here.

Abstract
A high precision five rotation-axes polarimeter using transmission multilayers as polarizers and reflection multilayers as analyzers has been designed and manufactured. To cover the extreme ultraviolet regime, Mo/Si, Cr/C, Sc/Cr, and W/B4C multilayers for transmission and reflection have also been designed and produced. The polarimeter mechanics is supported on a hexapod to simplify the alignment relative to photon beam. The instrument is designed so that it can be easily transferred between different beamlines.

Abstract
broadband microwave spectroscopy is a proven tool to precisely determine molecular properties of gas-phase molecules. Recent developments make it applicable to investigate chiral molecules. Enantiomers can be differentiated, and the enantiomeric excess and, indirectly, the absolute configuration can be determined in a molecule-selective manner. The resonant character and high resolution of rotational spectroscopy provide a unique mixture compatibility. Future directions, such as extending the technique to chemical analysis, are discussed.

Abstract
High harmonic radiation is meanwhile nearly extensively used for the spectroscopic investigation of electron dynamics with ultimate time resolution. The majority of high harmonic beamlines provide linearly polarized radiation created in a gas target. However, circular polarization greatly extends the spectroscopic possibilities for high harmonics, especially in the analysis of samples with chirality or prominent spin polarization. We produced a free-standing multilayer foil as a transmission EUV quarter waveplate and applied it for the first time to high harmonic radiation. We measured a broadband (4.6 eV FWHM) ellipticity of 75% at 66 eV photon energy with a transmission efficiency of 5%. The helicity is switchable and the ellipticity can be adjusted to lower values by angle tuning. As a single element it can be easily integrated in any existing harmonic beamline without major changes.

Abstract
We theoretically demonstrate the possibility to generate both trains and isolated attosecond pulses with high ellipticity in a practical experimental setup. The scheme uses circularly polarized, counterrotating two-color driving pulses carried at the fundamental and its second harmonic. Using a model Ne atom, we numerically show that highly elliptic attosecond pulses are generated already at the single-atom level. Isolated pulses are produced by using few-cycle drivers with controlled time delay between them.

Abstract
Stimulated by the recent demonstration of the first bright source of circularly polarized high harmonics, we examine the attosecond pulse trains generated by a group of such harmonics. For the s ground state of an atom, the polarization of generated pulses is close to linear, with three different orientations per cycle. However, for the p ground state of the inert gases used in the experiments, the polarization of the attosecond pulses is close to elliptical. We show that this is caused by the different intensities of the high harmonics of the opposite helicity.

Abstract
Electron-nuclei coupling accompanying excitation and relaxation processes is a fascinating phenomenon in molecular dynamics. A striking and unexpected example of such coupling is presented here in the context of photoelectron circular dichroism measurements on randomly oriented, chiral methyloxirane molecules, unaffected by any continuum resonance. Here, we report that the forward-backward asymmetry in the electron angular distribution, with respect to the photon axis, which is associated with photoelectron circular dichroism can surprisingly reverse direction according to the ion vibrational mode excited. This vibrational dependence represents a clear breakdown of the usual Franck-Condon assumption, ascribed to the enhanced sensitivity of photoelectron circular dichroism (compared with other observables like cross-sections or the conventional anisotropy parameter-β) to the scattering phase off the chiral molecular potential, inducing a dependence on the nuclear geometry sampled in the photoionization process. Important consequences for the interpretation of such dichroism measurements within analytical contexts are discussed.

Abstract
The existence of highly spin polarized photoelectrons emitted from non-magnetic solids as well as from unpolarized atoms and molecules has been found to be very common in many studies over the past 40 years. This so-called Fano effect is based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in the photoionization or the photoemission process. In a non-angle-resolved photoemission experiment, circularly polarized radiation has to be used to create spin polarized photoelectrons, while in angle-resolved photoemission even unpolarized or linearly polarized radiation is sufficient to get a high spin polarization. In past years the Rashba effect has become very important in the angle-resolved photoemission of solid surfaces, also with an observed high photoelectron spin polarization. It is the purpose of the present topical review to cross-compare the spin polarization experimentally found in angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy of condensed matter with that of free atoms, to compare it with the Rashba effect and topological insulators to describe the influence and the importance of the spin-orbit interaction and to show and disentangle the matrix element and phase shift effects therein. The relationship between the energy dispersion of these phase shifts and the emission delay of photoelectron emission in attosecond-resolved photoemission is also discussed. Furthermore the influence of chiral structures of the photo-effect target on the spin polarization, the interferences of different spin components in coherent superpositions in photoemission and a cross-comparison of spin polarization in photoemission from non-magnetic solids with XMCD on magnetic materials are presented; these are all based upon the influence of the spin-orbit interaction in angle-resolved photoemission.

Abstract
A sizable enhancement of the circular dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy has been measured and computed for the metal complex Δ-cobalt(III) tris-acetylacetonate highest occupied molecular orbital state in the region of the Co 3p→3d Fano resonance. In the resonance the dichroism reaches the maximum value of 5% and even changes its sign as compared to the direct photoionization channel. We ascribe this enhancement to electron correlation processes, namely, with the coupling between discrete excitations and the continuum, which is correctly described in the time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) framework. These findings open new physical aspects of photoelectron circular dichroism that now can be interpreted not only via the simple direct ionization, but also through more complex electron correlation processes.

Abstract
The electronic structure of epichlorohydrin is investigated in the whole valence region by a combined experimental and theoretical study. The issue of controversial assignments of the molecular electronic structure is here addressed. Photoelectron spectra (PES) and Threshold Photoelectron spectra (TPES) of room temperature molecules in the gas phase are recorded. Geometries and energies of the stable conformers due to internal rotation of the C-C-C-Cl dihedral angle, gauche-II (g-II), gauche-I (g-I), and cis, are calculated, and the effect of the conformational flexibility on the photoionization energetics is studied by DFT and 2h-1p Configuration Interaction (CI) methods. Strong breakdown of the Koopmans Theorem (KT) is obtained for the four outermost ionizations, which are further investigated by higher level ab initio calculations. The full assignment of the spectrum is put on a firm basis by the combination of experimental and theoretical results. The orbital composition from correlated calculations is found closer to the DFT orbitals, which are then used to analyze the electronic structure of the molecule. The Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and HOMO--2 are n(O)/n(Cl) mixed orbitals. The nature of each valence MO is generally preserved in all the conformers, although the magnitude of the n(O)/n(Cl) mixing in HOMO and HOMO--2 varies to some extent with the C-C-C-Cl dihedral angle. The low energy part of the HOMO PE band is predicted to be substantially affected by the conformational flexibility, as experimentally observed in the spectra. The rest of the spectrum is described in terms of the dominant conformer g-II, and a good agreement between experiment and theory is found. The inner-valence PE spectrum is characterized by satellite structures, due to electron correlation effects, which are interpreted by means of 2h-1p CI calculations.

Abstract
The beta angular asymmetry and D dichroic asymmetry parameters of the methyl-oxirane highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) band have been experimentally investigated with vibrational resolution using synchrotron radiation. A theoretical calculation of the Franck-Condon factors between vibrational ground state and different ionic vibrational states, in the Born-Oppenheimer harmonic approximation, has been performed in order to gain information on the vibrational states mainly involved in the HOMO photoelectron band. The general good agreement between theoretical and experimental results allows a reliable assignment of the major features. The experimental determination of beta and D shows their dependence on the different final vibrational states. This paper reports, for the first time, experimental evidence of the dependence of the dichroic D parameter on the vibrational excitation of the ion.

Abstract
The dynamical behavior of circular dichroism for valence photoionization processes in pure enantiomers of randomly oriented methyl-oxirane molecules has been studied by circularly polarized synchrotron radiation. Experimental results of the dichroism coefficient obtained for valence photoionization processes as a function of photon energy have been compared with theoretical values predicted by state-of-the-art ab initio density-functional theory. The circular dichroism measured at low electron kinetic energies was as large as 11%. Trends in the experimental dynamical behavior of the dichroism coefficients D(i)(omega) have been observed. Agreement between experimental and theoretical results permits unambiguous identification of the enantiomer and of the individual orbitals.

Abstract
The photoelectron circular dichroism that arises in the angular distribution of photoelectrons emitted from the carbonyl group in randomly oriented pure enantiomers of carvone, and a number of carvone derivatives, is investigated by continuum multiple scattering calculations. Core ionization of carbonyl C 1s orbitals is examined for six different isopropenyl tail conformations of carvone. These show clear differences of behavior both between axial and equatorial conformations, and between the three rotational conformers of each. The pronounced dependence of the dichroism on orientation of a tail grouping, itself remote from the localized initial C 1s site, indicates the presence of long range final state photoelectron scattering effects. Analogous data for the outermost valence orbital, partially localized on the carbonyl group, are also presented. The apparently enhanced sensitivity of the dichroism exhibited in this work is discussed in terms of the particular dependence on photoelectron interference effects that is probed by the dichroism measurement and is contrasted with the usual beta parameter and cross section determinations.

Abstract
An electron imaging technique has been used to study the full angular distribution of valence photoelectrons produced from enantiomerically pure molecular beams of camphor when these are photoionized with circularly polarized light. In addition to the familiar beta parameter, this provides a new chiral term, taking the form of an additional cosine function in the angular distribution which consequently displays a forward-backward electron ejection asymmetry. Several ionization channels have been studied using synchrotron radiation in the 8.85-26 eV photon energy range. With alternating left and right circularly polarized radiations the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) in the angular distribution can be measured and shows some strong dynamical variations with the photon energy, depending in sign and intensity on the ionized orbital. For all orbitals the measured PECD has a quite perfect antisymmetry when switching between R and S enantiomers, as expected from theory. In the HOMO(-1) channel the PECD chiral asymmetry curves show a double maxima reaching nearly 10% close to threshold, and peaking again at approximately 20% some 11 eV above threshold. This is attributed to a resonance that is also visible in the beta parameter curve. Newly optimized CMS-Xalpha photoionization dynamics calculations are also presented. They are in reasonably good agreement with the experimental data, including in the very challenging threshold regions. These calculations show that PECD in such randomly oriented samples can be understood in the electric dipole approximation and that, unlike the case pertaining in core-shell ionization-where a highly localized achiral initial orbital means that the dichroism arises purely as a final state scattering effect-in valence shell ionization there is a significant additional influence contributed by the initial orbital density.

Abstract
In the present work the photoelectron circular dichroism of camphor has been theoretically studied using B-spline and continuum multiple scattering-Xalpha methods, and comparisons are made with available experimental data. In general, rather large dichroism effects have been found for both valence and core (O 1s, C 1s) photoionizations. The agreement between the two calculations reported here and previous experimental measurements for core C 1s data is essentially quantitative. For valence ionization satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment has been obtained and the discrepancies have been attributed to both exchange-correlation potential limitations and the absence of response effects in the adopted formalism. The calculations predict, moreover, important features in the cross-section profiles, which have been discussed in terms of dipole-prepared continuum orbitals.

Abstract
The inner-shell C 1s photoionization of randomly oriented molecules of the chiral compound carvone has been investigated using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation up to 30 eV above threshold. Binding energies of the C=O and CH2= carbon 1s orbitals were determined to be 292.8+/-0.2 and 289.8+/-0.2 eV, respectively. The remaining C-H C 1s levels substantially overlap under an intense central peak centered at 290.5+/-0.2 eV. The angle-resolved photoemission from the carbonyl carbon C=O core orbital in pure carvone enantiomers shows a pronounced circular dichroism of approximately 6% at the magic angle of 54.7 degrees to the light beam propagation direction. This corresponds to an expected 0 degrees -180 degrees forward-backward electron emission asymmetry of approximately 10%. On changing between the R and S enantiomers of carvone the sense or sign of the asymmetry and associated dichroism effectively reverses. The observed circular dichroism, and its energy dependence, is well accounted for by calculations performed in the pure electric dipole approximation.

Abstract
The study of chiral adsorbed molecules is important for an analysis of enantioselectivity in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we show that such molecules can be identified through circular dichroism in core-level photoemission arising from the chiral carbon atoms in stereoisomers of 2,3-butanediol molecules adsorbed on Si(100), using circularly polarized x rays. The asymmetry in the carbon 1s intensity excited by right and left circularly polarized light is readily observed, and changes sign with the helicity of the radiation or handedness of the enantiomers; it is absent in the achiral form of the molecule. This observation demonstrates the possibility of determining molecular chirality in the adsorbed phase.

Abstract
Circular dichroism in the angular distribution of valence photoelectrons emitted from randomly oriented 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran enantiomers (ThS and ThR) has been observed in gas-phase experiments using circularly polarized vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light. The measured dichroism for both ThS and ThR, acquired at the single magic angle theta=234.73 degrees and at photon energies of 22, 19, 16, and 14 eV, points to an asymmetric forward-backward scattering of the photoelectrons from their highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) HOMO-1 and HOMO-2, of up to 5%, depending on the photon energy. The asymmetry reverses on exchange of either the helicity of the radiation or the configuration of Th. The photoionization dichroic D parameters of ThS and ThR have been measured and their values discussed in the light of LCAO B-spline density functional theory (DFT) predictions. While an acceptable agreement is found between the dichroic parameter measured and calculated at the highest photon energy for the HOMO and HOMO-2 orbitals of Th, a significant discrepancy is observed for the HOMO-1 state which is attributed to the floppiness of Th, in particular to the comparatively large sensitivity of the size and shape of its HOMO-1 on nuclear vibrational motion.

Abstract
The inner-shell photoionization of unoriented camphor molecules by circularly polarized light has been investigated from threshold to a photoelectron kinetic energy of approximately 65 eV. Photoelectron spectra of the carbonyl C 1s orbital, recorded at the magic angle of 54.7 degrees with respect to the light propagation direction, show an asymmetry of up to 6% on change of either the photon helicity or molecular enantiomer. These observations reveal a circular dichroism in the angle resolved emission with an asymmetry between forward and backward scattering (i.e., 0 degrees and 180 degrees to the light beam) which can exceed 12%. Since the initial state is an atomiclike spherically symmetric orbital, this strongly suggests that the asymmetry is caused by final-state effects dependent on the chiral geometry of the molecule. These findings are confirmed by electron multiple scattering calculations of the photoionization dynamics in the electric-dipole approximation.

Abstract
The linear combination of atomic orbitals B-spline density functional method has been successfully applied to a series of four chiral derivatives of oxirane, to calculate the photoionization dynamical parameters, the circular dichroism in the angular distribution effect, and to identify trends along the series. The computational algorithm has proven numerically stable and computationally competitive. The photoionization cross section, asymmetry, and dichroic parameter profiles relative to valence orbitals have been systematically studied for the states which retain their nature along the series: the identified trends have been ascribed to the different electronic properties of the substituents. A rather unexpected sensitivity of the dichroic parameter to changes in the electronic structure has been found in many instances, making this dynamical property suitable to investigate the electronic structure of chiral compounds. The magnitude of the circular dichroism in the angular distribution effect does not seem to be associated with the initial state chirality, but rather to be governed by the ability of the delocalized photoelectron wave function to probe the asymmetry of the molecular effective potential.
